>Haiku pool starting value : 2 / 6 pool points
>Todays theme : New Experiences
>About the haiku pool, It is a mechanic that allows any player to draw up to three points from the pool for a +2 bonus (per point, so +2/+4/+6) to any roll. If there are multiple successes on a roll the one with the lowest number of haiku points spent will be used, if there are multiple failures (and no successes) the one with the lowest number of haiku pool points spent will be taken and subtracted from pool. If there is only a single success whatever was gambled on it will be subtracted. In the case of crit failures or successes no points will be subtracted. The haiku pool is added to by submitting haiku's that fit the theme of the day and it caps out at a maximum value of 6 (it can be added to again after points are spent).

In the last thread Maro has recovered from falling ill after suffering long-term effects of having tainted chi, fixed he manages to reconcile some of the differences between Lily and Rokan. Passing out from the healing recieved Maro is met by Gen Xiao Ren where he asks about the stone dragons tenth child, "Lan Hen", Gen informs Maro that Lan Hen is intelligent, brutal and ruthless and most likely up to horrible things in the fire nation. Returning from the hotsprings, Maro informs his family briefly of his plan to ask the firelord for the eight deliberations, which is when Jin is attacked by four fire nation warships. A fight ensues and through clever planning Maro and his companions are able to destroy the warships, defeat the soldiers and save the village of Jin with practically no casualties on their side.

You are Maro of Jin also known as Maro of the Lightning.
It has been almost a month since you made the decision to travel to the capital with your companions : Pan, Ming Puar, Lily, Rokan, Mayu and a fuzzy little guinneapig-bat. The journey has been long but you came with the intent of begging the firelord for the eight deliberations - a pardon for an accidental murder and quite a few other misdeeds. Furthermore you have been asked by a great spirit known as the Stone Dragon to slay his tenth child 'Lan Hen' who hides in the fire-nation and on a personal matter, being in the capital will finally allow you to get to the bottom of Pan's kidnapping before her apparent intended betrothal.

Still standing on the edge of the ship amongst your companions you look out upon the capital city and see a riot of activity, terrifyingly busy with street performers, strange animals and all manner of other sights. You can note waterbenders, earthbenders and even the occasional wandering air nomad amongst the people from the edge of your ship alone.

Rokan is next to you, clearly sensing your awe when she says "You're only looking upon the lower city Maro. The upper city is much quieter and less busy, the inns are finer too but more expensive and closer to the nobility."
"Is being amongst the nobility a bad thing Rokan?"
"It may be, you have said yourself that you may have enemies among the court, but you have few friends... and my own are unlikely to be able to protect you"
"Would the lower city be any safer?"
"Probably not, there's far more potential for accidents"
"You're not being a large help Rokan. What else did you wish to talk to me about?"
"When we left Jin your father informed me that he wanted you to be presented as the Lord of Jin in the courts... He's passing leadership of the house to you and that means quite a few things: Firstly your house has no heraldry, secondly while it is reasonably wealthy its influence in the courts are minimal right now, how you present yourself will be incredibly important."
"No heraldry?"
"Yes, you'll need to make a seal that will stand for your house before you're presented to the firelord. There are a number of craftsmen in the upper city who could do such a thing for you, though some work in the lower city as well for lower officials"

"Rokan, can you tell me more about the inns in the upper city?"
"There are few I really like Maro"
"Tell me about them please?"
"The first is the Green Nymph, it is a smaller and quieter place, known for the general tranquility of the house and the four ex-military firebenders it employs. The food is good and conversations are always secret. It's located closer to the firelords palace"

Ming states that she's fond of any place that has good food as you motion Rokan to continue.

"The next Inn is called the Honest Oni... It is considerably busier and it caters to a younger group of individuals. Gossip and fights happen frequently - in fact quite a number of individuals there are paid to pick staged fights for the victorious nobles to brag about winning, the guards make sure nothing serious ever happens amongst the nobles themselves. People come to this place to be seen and to be heard, rooms are generally at high occupancy but you can convince the owner to throw people out with a bit of bribery. It is located closer to the lower city"

Mayu snorts in derision upon hearing the description.

"The last is the Weeping Serpent. It is usually at medium occupancy and is reasonably well guarded, the only really noteable thing about it is that it serves the finest tea in the capital - straight from the island of Jin... It's located closer to the house of ten"

Lily exclaims her desire to stay at the Weeping serpent almost immediately, Pan seems rather impressed by the prospects of speaking with someone who serves Jin tea.

"We'll be going to the Weeping Serpent Inn, I'm sure we all want to see if tea in the capital is anything like at home"

Rokan smiles behind her hands over this, and Lily seems absolutely ecstatic over staying somewhere with Jin tea.

Bidding the Captain of the Oonagi crested ship farewell, you leave through the crowds that are drawing in around it and asking the crew questions. Already expecting rumors of you to spread through the lower city, your group makes the journey up to the upper city, and then heads directly to the Weeping Serpent. Passing through the army checkpoints you feel intensely scrutinizing looks, obviously noting Rokan by description alone.. and potentially yourself.

As Rokan had said, the upper city is considerably quieter than the lower city, and only a few avenues seem to have any real traffic, it's mostly large family estates in the backdrop of a mountainous basin.

The Weeping serpent inn is considerably quieter than you had expected, aside from a lone patron reading poetry aloud in the main room. Watching briefly, you recognize it as a famous love-poem written about separated lovers being recited awkwardly by a youth roughly Pan's age... you also hear quiet snickers amongst other patrons.

Approaching the younger man he hesitates and stumbles in his recitation. Clearly embarrassed he looks to be on the edge of bolting when you gently place a firm hand on his shoulder. "There is no shame in honest feelings, especially when you have the courage to express them infront of others. If I can, may I offer some technical help in your recital?"
The youth nods, and you give him a short lesson on the conventions of vocalized poetry, how certain vowels are meant to be emphasized and how this poem in particular is meant for a singer and music. Noticing a flute on the young man you ask if you may help by providing music for another attempt.

"Once again this time don't try to mask your passion" you say as you play a melody from the same period as the poem. Surprisingly the boy manages to time his words to the music perfectly and the patrons who were snickering earlier are now in awe. One slightly drunker man is weeping.

The boy looks at you with clear admiration in his eyes as you hand his flute back "I didn't think words could move people in such manners. Thank you. May I have your name sir?"
"I am Maro" you reply as speech resumes amongst the other fifty of so patrons.

"You may find life a greater series of coincidences, fortunate and unfortunate, than you'd ever believe... Pan stands across the room, with a flower in her hair. Be respectful, she likes poetry and tea"
"How? How is all this possible?"
"It is a long story... do not ask Pan of it."
"I will have to be brief... I snuck out of the family estate to recite poetry here today"

Walking with the young man briefly you introduce him to Pan and he introduces himself as Ten Sung, second child of the House of Ten. Taking a seat with Rokan you order Jin tea and wait patiently watching the clear infatuation of Ten Sung with Pan.

"I don't think I've seen anyone fall for another quite so quickly" you say.
"It really is a shame you killed his brother Maro, when he learns it will likely sour your relationship... You've done something cruel to him I think".
"It was a terrible accident Rokan, one I am here trying to fix and if he knew his brother like I did, well, maybe he'll forgive me. That's the best I can hope for"
"Hope will not get you far in the firelords court I fear"
"I am not of the court yet Rokan. What can you tell me about the firelord?"
"The firelord is a driven, ambitious man, like fire he is... intense. His rule started out somewhat tenuous but he played his enemies against each other with subtle manipulations. Truthfully I fear him"

Pan leaves her own table and joins yours, barely focusing on what she's doing.
"How did it go Pan?"
"He was polite, he was kind, he knew some of my favorite poems even."
"And?"
"What do you want to know Maro, we only talked for a few minutes"
"I wanted to know if you'd like to meet him again Pan."
"... I wouldn't say no to it" Pan says while fidgeting

"On another matter, apparently in order to be presented to the firelord, our house needs some form of heraldry"

"Well Maro you're the lord of the house now and I'm supposed to be married of to another family. Unless something terribly wrong happens the family crest isn't really going to be attached to me for any length, that is if you permit me to marry soon. It'd probably be better to ask Rokan as she's a real noble or Lily"

"I didn't really think about it that way" You reply. "Do you have an opinion Rokan?"

"Heraldry typically has a foreground, a focus and a background, that's one style. The other style is to have an image surrounded by another one. It is getting late though, if we want a seal-maker to speak with us we need to leave soon"

>Final chance to decide seal, otherwise I'll be going ahead with a dragon in a tea-field with lightning coming down from clouds overhead.
>>
>>26650728
>otherwise I'll be going ahead with a dragon in a tea-field with lightning coming down from clouds overhead.

I thought it was a dragon breathing lightning on a tea-field.

Or did you change it to fit the Foreground, Focus, Background mix?
>>
>>26650756
I changed it a little. Maro is often called an 'aspect of the storms' in the spirit world and the dragon can be breathing fire.
>>
>>26650789

Well I'm fine with it.
>>
>>26650728
can the dragon be made of lightining?

like a lightning bolt with a dragon's head
>>
>>26650834
ideally I want to potentially be able to draw it in my spare time, if I decide to. So no.
>>
>>26650728
Pan's really sending mixed signals here, like she's not sure what she wants and expects us to make up her mind for her.
>I wouldn't say no
>getting "married off"
>unless something goes wrong
>if you permit me to marry

Also, I'd avoid referencing lightning in our seal. A dragon encircling a tea flower, with lily, chrysanthemum, and jasmine at the center rather than the traditional single flower, would be my vote.
>>
>>26650923
She's fifteen, and it's an arranged marriage.
>>
>>26650879
>want to draw it

Then my other idea won't work.

Basically like an Asian Tiamat, but with one of the heads having a crown of tea leaves & flowers to designate that is Maro.

But that's kinda pretentious and might get us fucked with the Stone Dragon.
>>
>>26651004
The stone dragon wouldn't care, he's not particularly involved with the mortal world
>>
>>26650989
Well, yeah. This series of events literally translate how you'd expect it to
>I wouldn't say no
"It's not my decision, whether I like it or not is largely irrelevant."
>getting "married off"
"I resent the fact that it's not my decision."
>unless something goes wrong
"But it's what's expected from me, and it's probably for the good of the Family."
>if you permit me to marry
"But since it's got to happen I'll do it, although I'd kind of like to have a say in it, at least to make sure I won't be miserable."
>>
>>26651004
It's massively pretentious to include any self-reference.
>>
>>26651114

The dragon is a self reference.
>>
Leaving the Inn with Rokan, she leads you to one of the seal makers workplaces, a short explanation of what you desire for your seal ensues and the man ridicules the choices.

"I'm prepared quite a bit to have this seal made sir. It will be worth your time"
"Go find a toymaker, I work on seals for noble families."

Leaving the shop, you turn to Rokan "I thought you told me he would make a seal for me"
"Apparently the old master that worked there died, and the business went to his apprentice, who as you have seen is overwhelmingly arrogant" Rokan replies.

"Do we return to the inn then? and find another sealmaker tomorrow?"
"I have my own seal... it could see us into the court"

"Your seal will not be needed, Ro Kan. The firelord will see Maro of Jin this night regardless of proper ceremony." A sudden third party interjects. "You will be returning to the Inn, and Maro will be coming with me"

Surprised Rokan turns to face the newcomer, wearing the black uniform of an Imperial servant. Whispering to you Rokan says "Be very careful Maro, the court is a dangerous place alone", before she bows to the servant and walks away.

The man leads you around the corner, and into a carriage which brings you to the palace in at speed, where you are traded off to a different handler. Bowing before you he informs you to not look directly at the firelord unless commanded to and to remain twenty paces from his throne.

The palace itself is a nauseating riot of colors and old portraits, thousands of servants active even at the late hours and an incredible amount of activity. Scurrying before you the man has all paths opened for him and by proxy you. Upon reaching the throne room the man bows deeply and races off before you eyes fixed on the ground shouting "Lord Maro of Jin has come, in the hour of the serpent at the firelords demand! Approach to twenty paces of firelord Ro Ten and kneel!" only to stop at the throne itself and whisper something to the man sitting behind a curtain. Approaching to the proscribed distance, you kneel.

"Tell me" You hear a soft voice begin "why a guard captain writes me, exclaiming exuberantly that I should extend the mercy of the eight deliberations to a man who murdered another noble, who burned down almost fully half of one of my cities and burned four of my warships and slaughtered the soldiers on them like chattel, to a man I personally consider a traitor to the fire nation. Look at me as you answer"

[ ]Because I am one of the most dangerous people you will ever meet, firelord.
[ ]Actions out of my control forced those circumstances firelord, I seek amends for them.
[ ]Ling Yi saw with more clarity than most, Firelord, systems put in place are corrupt and in need of reform he believed I acted justly and fairly.

Try to make it known we didn't have a choice, but that we also don't expect instant leniency or anything.

We still did those things regardless of the circumstances.
>>
>>26651848
"Well firelord... it all started when the fire nation attacked. well it started before that, but part of it started then"
>>
>>26651848
>[ ]Because I am one of the most dangerous people you will ever meet, firelord.

Time for bravado, lets bluff like a fucking madman.

"Its not my error that the House of Ten sired a weakling"

Power only respects power

"i discovered a new technique that unfortunately i haven't been able to use in any other way to but to kill. my first victim being a member of your extended family, that's the only reason your after me, if i had kill a peasant this meeting would be you congratulating me on my lightning. also your soldiers attacked a village without even sending a message of surrender or making sure i was on my family's island therefore i defended my self and my people. the city that was half burned down was my destroying a drug kingpin and rescuing some captives that i knew."
>>
So we're at a tie between bravado and being somewhat apologetic? Tiebreaker please

[ ]Actions out of my control forced those circumstances firelord, I seek amends for them.

>>26652103
We're not sorry, we just have a good reson for everything, but fate threw us a bad hand but we persevered. At best we want to make up for the slight but we aren't sorry
>>
>>26652103

Apologetic.
>>
>>26652103
apologetic
>>
>>26652103
Both. We invented a new technique by accident, and used it on a brute who tried to kill us in a nonlethal examination, the leader of a drug cartel that spread corruption and cruelty, and a military force that put an entire town of people under our protection at risk with the specific goal of assassinating us.

All of which seemed like good ideas at the time.
>>
>>26652192
I can work with this.
>>
>>26652103
actions were beyond our control. did we mean to kill him no, are we sorry probably not.
>>
>>26652192

Seconded.

(Also, it's getting late for me and I'm trying to get used to waking up with an alarm again rather than sleeping in until 11 or 12 like I used to.)

pretty much how I'd feel

"While I feel remorse for the people hurt by my actions, I do not regret the actions I took firelord. Ten Ping was a brute, a rapist and a thug who got away with his actions only due to his proximity to the throne, he also tried to kill me in the agni kai... that said his death was accidental. The tragedy that was the fires in shen jiao were due to me exposing a drug and slave cartel, however the fires were set by the firebenders beholden to the criminal Lao Len, who is dead now at my hands. I had to convince the Guard Captain Ling Yi to allow people to leave the district, rather than confining them all to the burning quarter, the number of people that died was far, far smaller than it could have been." Pausing briefly you look up to see that the firelord Ro Ten... is a woman. "As for the destruction of your warships and death of your soldiers, they were attacking Jin. I defended the village, for I will not serve any law or ruler that does not first serve the people."

"Impressive. You do have a spine, Maro of Jin. When you started apologizing for your actions I worried that you didn't... I wondered what my little sister saw in you. It is interesting to hear that the warships I sent to bring you to me in custody attacked Jin"

[ ] ... Little Sister?
[ ] The firelord is a woman?
[ ] You didn't order them to attack?
>>
>>26652337
If anyone answers
>[ ] The firelord is a woman?
Please ignore them.

>[X] ... Little Sister?
>>
>>26652337
Rokan I assume is your little sister?
By the way, we should begin building boats out of something nearly all of our citizens can't burn down in seconds, metal maybe?
>>
>>26652368
Season one of avatar displays that the metal boats don't fare much better to a determined firebender
>>
>>26652337
You didn't order them to attack?
-gradually leading into-
Wait, your "Little Sister"?
>>
"Little Sister?" you say slowly, trying to process what's been said.
"Yes, my little sister Ro Kan the youngest of the five of us... she fled the palace at the tender age of twenty fearing I would kill her like I had all all the others." Ro Ten smiles at you
"But... she never said anything"
"Of course she didn't. She was forbidden from speaking about my gender like all others, under pain of death and the lie she concocted as to her origins entertained me so much I ordered the family implicated in it to accept it. She is technically in exile and she is still alive only because she has stayed far, far away from any attempts at power"

"Why would you tell me any of this?"
"Because I am powerful and because you will likely die soon anyways Maro of Jin. I may grant you pardon, I may not, for now you are to remain in the capital city until I have decided what to do with you. I have yet to decide if you are a fascinating traitor, or a fascinating citizen."

End of firebender quest episode 16. Q&A is open for a little bit

Sorry, that twenty is supposed to be sixteen, I was writing without looking at my notes.

She's not as outright psychotic.
>>
>>26652697
And to be fair, it always struck me that paranoia went part and parcel with the position.
