You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

GET HYPED
>>
>>26701893
TOO LATE I'M ALREADY HYPED.

Also I have a few questions and sadnesses.
1. Do our teammates know our breath is bad?
2. How long have they known (Tricia, looking at you)
3. Did Ssen get fed human meat as a child? Or was she lucky enough to get just animals?
4. Fuck we missed out on the post-victory celibrations and check-in with the troops, it completely slipped my mind
>>
>>26701933
Probably
A long time, Tricia even longer
No (why would you think this?)
Either offscreen or we were in a hurry.
>>
The Empire has been repelled, and the time has come to end this.

You detonated half of the brillitite stone and entered the Citadel Dome. The hole sealed up behind you, so you're not getting out without another explosion.

Also, the scene is a little different that you expected. It doesn't look like Citadel's within a dome. Just a walled city that's underneath a gorgeous blue sky. A city that's beyond compare in beauty.

"Okay." Mage starts taking out a map and a few gadgets, they look like a modified astrolabe and a funky looking dousing stone.

He fiddles with the devices and then shakes his head. "Crap." He puts the stuff away. "I can't find the heart from here. The whole HEKA matrix was restruc-"

"Magic babble?" Lea says.

"Yeah." He nods. "We need to get to either a place that's a Null, or...whatever is a Source Spike." He looks at you. "Some place with no magic or a crazy amount. When we get to a place like that, I can find the Heart."
>>
>>26702038
>(why would you even think this)
Mostly because she came from citadel parents, and citadel likes its monsters bloodthirsty.
It's a niggling concern I had forgotten about up until mage talked about his sister and I remembered that whole ghoul business.
Excuse my lingering worries.
>>
>>26702051
"Ah, so that's magic-code for we get to wander around taking in the sights? Marvelous. I still need to find and divorce a man, after all. Maybe check in on those new paladins we heard about last time we were here, even if they're gone, the caligo statuary room might still be a safe place."
>>
>>26702051
>All of my hype for Lamia Quest.

"Mage. Think the attic of the cathedral will work?"
>>
>>26702051
"What would be a tell tale sign that something is a Null or Source Spike? Is it something we can detect by sight alone?"
>>
>>26702051
>Also my math face when Mage is looking for either zeroes or local mins/maxes in the function of HEKA flow as it varies across 3-space.
>>
Not as a response to what mage is saying, but sometime while we're walking along
"You know, I expected a fair amount more wailing. Just in general. Or souls exploding out of bricks or something."
>>
>>26702185

All of that is probably still there, just comfortably out of sight from the general populace. Brave New World approach doesn't work if people can see the horrors that occur to keep their paradise running.
>>
>>26702185
Remember the North? The Citadel things are probably now something like those choir things.
>>
>>26702157
well, it IS something -we- could detect by sight alone, but probably not anyone else other than mage.
>>26702228
>>26702252
I'm really not looking forward to meeting odette. Shit's gonna be unpleasant.
>>
"What would be a tell tale sign that something is a Null or Source Spike? Is it something we can detect by sight alone?" You ask.

Mage shrugs. "Kinda. It's one of those things that makes perfect sense if you look at them retroactively. But when you're in the middle of it, you tend to miss it. That's a bad explanation...umm...if you find a spot where apples bounce off the ground and go up higher than rooftops, or if they instantly rot when they hit the ground, then you've got a spot. But that's not the best metric." Mage sighs. "Sorry. It's hard to explain, and before you ask, no your magic vision wouldn't spot it until the spot is in a flux and by then it's no good. I'd go into further detail, but magic babble."

"Okay, so we get to wander around taking in the sights, then? Marvelous. I still need to find and divorce a man, after all." You say.

Lea breaks into giggles again. She still finds that concept hilarious.

"You know, I expected a fair amount more wailing. Just in general. Or souls exploding out of bricks or something." You say as Lightmare pulls Wagon down the street.

"Yeah." Tricia says. "This looks like how it was before things went weird. Better than."

"We all know that the nasty is hidden under the surface." Peri says. "I don't think seeing and hearing tortured souls are Citadel's idea of a good time."

"Could have fooled me." Tricia says.

You snap your fingers, having gotten an idea. "Mage, would the Caligo Sanctuary, the Cathedral's attic, work?" You ask.

Mage blinks in surprise at the idea. "Maybe." He thinks for a moment, then nods. "Yeah...well...yeah. It's certainly a place to start."

"The cathedral's in the other direction from where the Shadow Company was." Lea says.
>>
>>26702406
"Let's start with the cathedral. Even if it's a dead end, it's high up, and we can get a good view of the city. Always good to get an overview of a place before you really get to wandering in it. Might even help us with our visit to the puppet guys- never know when, I don't know, an eternal block party has broken out, forcing you to change routes."

Doing my best here to guess what citadel's gonna throw at us, failing.
>>
>>26702406
Mage just needs a bearing, right? So we go to the Cathedral figure out where the hell we're going, then take care of anything else once we've got our bearings. Beats fumbling around blindly.
>>
No matter what we do, we shouldn't go around saying "everything is fake, this place is evil, there is a war going on outside" to everyone we meet. Or even the first person we meet.

That's cliche and is easily ignored by anyone in Citadel's sway. We save that for Odette, who deserves an explanation.
>>
>>26702531
I think we should get our bearing on the general social mindset before we go talking. For all we know, we're hated and reviled here now.

Though if someone is desperate for knowledge of "the outside world", then yeah, explain away.
>>
>>26702406
I think we should go to the Shadow Company. Remember the last time we went to the 'cathedral', that place was a crazed, corrupted part of citadel with only the attic safe. I dun't know about you but getting the the Shadow company on our side sounds better.
>>
>>26702571
A fair point, but I counterpropose that this is the fastest and simplest way of seeing if citadel has noticed/is angry with us currently.
>>
>>26702571
The attic is where we need to go to get bearings on the heart. So that's where we need to go.
>>26702550
Makes good sense. We have no idea what's been going on while we were "on the outside".
>>
>>26702550
>we might be hated and reviled

You know, that's a good point. Ssen shouldn't be out in the open until we get a feel for what the mindset is.
>>
>>26702638
we're not doing that leash thing again
We're probably going to do it again
>>
I'm looking forward to seeing what

It'd be hilarious if everyone is grateful to us for killing Peace, and Citadel admits that we were right about everything and that mind control and eating souls isn't the answer.
>>
>>26702743
I don't think there's a need. Just sneak and stay in the shadows until our company can get good intel.
>>
>>26702774
>I'm looking forward to seeing what the people's reaction to us is
DERP
>>
>>26702774
And if it agrees that mind control and soul-eating are wrong, it has to go back to where it came from. Because as far as I can tell, that's where Citadel's power comes from: soul-eating and mind control. And if there's no way for it to be a true benevolent dictator, it needs to just go home.
>>
>>26702939
Well, it could go the bear-spirit route and just sort of... overlook a city, and generally guide them insubstantially.

But the bricks here are made of silver. That's mad soul infusion, I bet.
>>
>>26702960
At this point it probably knows no way other than soul-fueled overcompensation.

And that is why it must be broken.
>>
>>26702638

"Let's make our way to the Cathedral, but we should be careful and try and see how people react to us first. Last thing we want is an angry mob." You say.

"Wow...how long HAS it been since we've faced down an angry mob?" Tricia asks.

"What? The ettin, Ice Things, and orcs don't count?" Peri asks.

"You know what I mean." Tricia says.

"Stop the wagon." Lea says.

You stop and she gets up and looks around. "Alright, please tell me I'm not the only one who's noticed this."

"Oh no." Mage moans. "What now?"

"Where are the people?" Lea asks.

Tricia points down the street. You can easily see a crowd of people walking, talking, pushing their way through the crowd, and other normal city life.

"Yeah. I saw that too." Lea says. "There WERE people HERE when we were back THERE." She points back up the road where you just were. It's gone back to being mildly full of people, when just a little while ago, it was a clear road.

You look around, it does seem like the road has cleared itself out for you and Wagon as you go through it.

"Illusions?" Tricia asks.

Mage shakes his head. "I don't think so."

You do see heat signatures and heartbeats in these people, and you've never heard of an illusion to be able to fake that.
>>
>>26703026
"Well clearly Citadel's found a surefire way to stop us talking to people and ruining everything. Just have everyone avoid us. I mean its not going to work for LONG but I give it an A for effort and creativity."
>>
>>26703026
"Maybe they're... avoiding us? Or we're trapped in another one of those endless forest kind of deals?
It's strange though, whatever it is, I'll give you that. Some kind of people-fog. Only thing for it is to keep going, and hope they don't all turn on us in unison when we poke something we shouldn't."
>>
>>26703026
Either Citadel is in complete control over every single living thing here, and forces them to give us a wide berth... or there WERE people here, and now they're simply not.

I'm not sure which is worse. But there were warm bodies and beating hearts, and whatever Citadel's done it needs to stop. So I say we keep an eye out for further shenanigans, but keep moving.

The sooner we wrap things up, the better.
>>
>>26703026
"I think we stopped facing angry mobs at around the time we started doing the whole saving cities thing. They could be related."
>>
"Maybe they're... avoiding us? Or we're trapped in another one of those endless forest kind of deals?" You say. "It's a surefire way to stop us talking to people and ruining everything."

"Want me to see if we can't force them to pay them attention to us?" Peri asks as she picks up a pebble. "See how they react if something smacks them upside the head?"

Grab the rock from peri's hand, replace it with a nice, soft apple or something from our supplies

"Sure, go for it."
>>
>>26703165
We're not here to draw attention, or to reason. We know what Citadel can do to people, and we can see what it's doing to them now.

I really think we need to move on for the time being. Move quick, stay low, get the job done before the Merjuice runs out.
>>
>>26703215
you make me reconsider some, so I will provide alternate dialogue

What if we played Citadel's game for a bit?

You know. Tell it a story. Go into an inn and ask if there are any jobs that need doing.
>>

maybe we'll spot out an inn while we're in the cathedral.

So wait, let me see if I have this right. There are areas within Citadel that may appear to be mundane, but passing through them can have us hurled into the air or rotted away chemically, and the only way to find them is to throw stuff in them?

We Stalkers now.

"Throwing rocks is rude, peri."
Whichever way we decide upon, we should make mention of this.
>>
Man I hope echo's not writing a really long and detailed chased-by-angry-mob scene
>>
>>26703843
I think he's waiting for somebody to make a decision.
>>
>>26703894
oh, well, don't throw the thing. That's my decision now, upon consideration. We'll throw it later. I was the one who said to go for it, but everyone else has made good arguments for not going for it.

We will need to try something by the time we get to the shadow company though.
>>
>>26703026
Pick a person, watch them as we approach. see if they just happen to step inside or head down an alleyway before we get there.
>>
>>26704079
yeah, how is citadel pulling this trick off? That might be the way to find the method.

Also, we should perhaps start marking as we go along. Some chalk or whatever we have to write with. See what happens to that.
>>
(Echo's actually having some severe network difficulties because he's trying to to kill Comcast tech people over the phone by thought alone)

"Let's not. At least, not yet." You say. "We don't want a mob, and throwing rocks is rude."

Peri nods and pockets the rock.

You continue your way to the cathedral. Again, it isn't as if the city is empty, just that it's clearing out in front and behind you so that you can move Lightmare through the city swiftly and without issue.

You also start to notice a few weird things. There's more than a couple of different styles of dress being worn. And it's more than just class differences. Some people are walking around like it's the middle of winter, and other are apparently wearing 'clothes' that have the same amount of material as a single bed sheet. Some are carrying weapons openly, and others are carrying flowers, or open tankards.

Also they way that only the similarly dressed interact with each other...you get the feeling that you're watching four or seven different plays, all at once, all on the same stage.

"Ssen." Mage says. "Don't look too high up at the Cathedral. That goes for everyone, but especially you with your magic eyes Ssen."

"Why?" Tricia asks.

"Because there's at fifty Cathedral spires in the same spot at the same time, and it is giving me a MASSIVE headache." Mage says.
>>
>>26704231
So. Everyone is in there own little world, and the only people they can interact with are in similar worlds.

Explains why they don't notice us, anyway.
>>
>>26704231
ah, so the coyotes are trying to cut your network lines. How terrible.

"Geez mage, why'd you say that, now I really, really want to look. Is it a going-blind style headache, or is it just the impossibility of it all?

Oh, would this count as one of those magic spike things? That means we have to go into it, doesn't it?"

It finally snapped when we pounded home the fact that not everyone can be happy in its perfect little world, that different people have different tastes and so it did the only thing it could. (Not let them live as they see fit, of course) It made a perfect little stepford world everytime it saw irreconcilable differences until every living thing was nice and happy in its indular, uniform world.

Not particularly.

How many of you folks have actually played snakegirls?
>>
>>26705002
well, I'm worried about various things, but we can't do much about them. Like whether that one girl is getting executed right now because she killed her brother. Hope the parents are more cool about it than that.
If we stick to things we CAN do, well, the next obvious experiment is to pluck someone out of quantum superimposition safely. Probably with a thrown object. We'll do this after we investigate the 50spire.
>>
>>26705046
She shouldn't be getting executed. We've absolved her.

>>26705054
That doesn't actually hold much legal weight from what I gather. Also we did the thing secretively at her request.

It occurs to me, folks, that Citadel doesn't seem to be altering minds.

Think about it. From what we've seen, there are a number of alternate realities, each slightly different, so that different people can still be happy.

Citadel either doesn't want to or can't simply twist their minds so they all want the same thing.

This could be very important.

>>26706292
Citadel's influence isn't overt mind control so much as it is background psychic radiation. It slowly imposes its will on the populace to the point that they truly believe it to be their own thoughts, but is incapable of outright forcing conformation. Thus the segregation of the populace we are currently seeing.

Think of it as the difference between giving someone increasing doses of arsenic and shooting them. Either way they end up dead, but Citadel doesn't like guns.

10 million dollars wired to CitadelMercenaryServices's paypal account by Tuesday or you'll never hear from this fatass again.

You're talking about the inn guy with the clocks and the cannibal lord, right? I was under the impression that was the Dramatae's doing.
>>
>>26706421
I dunno, things were very citadel around there. Also there were the people doing the constant-pray back in citadel proper.
>>26706410
You fiends! Also where do you expect us to get 10 million in this economy!
>>
>>26706444
Ah, of course. Then to correct my statement: Citadel IS capable of forcing conformation, but they become boring. And once Citadel is bored of you, the only proper solution is a new career in architecture.
>>
>>26706444

Citadel's entire structure had been altered by the Dramatae. I suspect that things are a bit different here, now that they're gone.

Oh, the missed opportunities...
>>
>>26707951
let's ask her at some point. Passing curiosity.

Also, if we filled our mouth with acid, would that remove the bad breath? That's how you clean your mouth, right, with acid?
>>
>>26707951
All this time we've been fighting with someone trained to grapple and not once have they suplexed anyone

I'm unbelievably disappointed by this.
>>
Question: Are we the head of our order, or is there no real official head due to the lack of membership?
>>
>>26707994
we must have been hogging ALL the sweet grapple time. What fools we've been!

Also, we've not done the fastball special with her.

If we throw her and instruct her to grapple, the momentum would allow her to perform multiple-suplex-chains, and flying grapples.
>>
>>26707978
Clear venom is acid, isn't it? It's in our mouth a lot and it doesn't seem to help.
>>
>>26708009
that's a good question.

I love how bad breath is the only thing he tried to insult us with that we didn't just brush off. Probably been in the back of our mind since before the battle.

"Is it really that bad? It can't be that bad. Tricia would have said something by now. But what if she's just being kind? I can't ask her, she might try to spare my feelings. I do eat a lot of meat, would the acid solve that? Would that make it worse? Is it healthy to have acid in my mouth all the time? What if I chew ginger, or mint, or something? That stuff is disgusting though..."
>>
>>26708086
>Stafford shakes his head and looks at Julian. "When you train it to speak again, fix its breath, it reeks of death and dead animal."

In short, we found out a way we were being inconsiderate and didn't even know about. Thank goodness Isen didn't make a joke out of it after that kissing incident. Probably because we numbed his olifactory system.
>>
>>26708161
>Citadel offers us a breath mint as that's the biggest insecurity on our mind at the moment

>Are we the head of our order, or is there no real official head due to the lack of membership?
You are considered to be the head of the Caligo Clarus. The Schola and Arma Nitor, for now, answer to Ambrose, Gregory, and Sophie. However, you are considered to be the founder of the organizations.

As for your breath...it's...not...BAD bad (your morning breath did possibly wither flowers, but it was just that one time, and it was a sickly flower anyway)
>>
>>26708270
Well, I suppose we used our clout to foot the bill, which makes us sorta the founders.

Also,
>that denial
Oh god our breath is terrible. We thought those neighborhood kids were just being mean, like when they threw rocks, when they said that. This changes everything.
>>
>>26708202
Three weeks from now we're going to wake Mage up in the middle of the night with a frantic look in our eyes and disheveled hair asking him if people talk about our breath behind our back it's okay if he does it too just be honest we won't be angry we promise.

>>26708235
Future Paladins we train will have dental care drilled into them, ranks of knights with shining bright smiles.

In the future, a major toothpaste company will use an image of a Paladin in armor holding a shield to protect from tooth decay and a sword to fight plaque.

It will promise to bring you a smile that shines even in the darkest places.
>>
>>26708270
So our breath is one step above chemical warfare.

Which is still better than most of the rest of our bodily functions.

You know, we might have to consider alternate disposal methods for lamias.

I mean, we can probably find the place we buried those lamia a ways back by the zone of dead plants.
>>
>>26708527
Well, we'll probably have a steel-lined coffin in a reinforced concrete crypt, along with the rest of the Dawnchasers, Wagon, Nightmare, and Granny.

Gold and Silver's gravesite might also be good, depending on how many lamias there are, and cremation might be good if there are just too damn many to bury in one place.
>>
>>26708633
>Cremating incredibly poisonous creatures
Oh yes I love lethal smog being spread everywhere by wind. Really makes my day.

It's going to be really tough for lamia to integrate into society, isn't it? I mean, who wants to send their kids to a school that has a bag of poison slithering around? Or live next to several bags of poison?

>>26708633
speaking of nightmare, I think he might be secretly the strongest member of the team. All of us are below his notice, most likely.

How would we go about finding the names of the hundred or so ettins we helped slaughter? Also, probably not much in the way of political support there.

I like this as a Caligo Clarus memorial, but with beacon at the center. Names of famous members can go on the walls on either side, and can be interred below or around it.
>>
>>26708907
Hopefully there's enough ettins left over to tell us who the dead ettins were.

I like the memorial, but beacon is like a high tier blood artifact which scares me some, I think it should be kept safe and secure, passed down in the order perhaps.
>>
>>26708942
I agree with passing it down. Who knows what future generations might have to deal with.

Beacon's a change-based artifact though. It's not gonna be happy if we retire and don't hand it off.
>>
>>26708971
But passing down Beacon is tradition!
>>
>>26708942
An image of beacon on the monument, not the real thing. Of course the actual Beacon is either going to be passed on to a heavily vetted successor or entombed with us.
>>
>>26709008
Maybe we could have a fake beacon in a display case and the real one passed off to a secret successor, who reforges it into another weapon like always.
>>
>>26709097
I'd prefer to avoid creating church conspiracies if at all possible. We'll just make it obvious it is not the real beacon.
>>
>>26709113
But we wouldn't want the new successor to have undue fame that would either corrupt him or make his job impossible.

Beacon and the Claigo Clarus themselves for a reason and we should respect that.
>>
>>26709149
we'll just tell people we handed it down to successors, have it reforged, and let them guess which of the guys with quicksilver light enchanted weapons has the real beacon.

But we've been going on for a while bumping a pre-dead thread, so I'm going to start including sages for the conversation.

>Hey, whatever happened to Donovan?
He's crumbled to dust when Comedy died. His soul is back in the Blank Space, refusing to talk to Dusk, waiting for someone to tell him he was in the right all along. There his soul will wait for a long long time.

>Echo, what's the name of the PE's land spirit?
It used to be The Fifth, then Dagda and his coalition did their thing, now the Great Phoenix is holding sway.

Thing is there's two Great Phoenix. One is just the laws and teachings of the Empire's faith and morality. The force of rebirth that keeps them going, who, much like Dusk, works his tailfeathers off in the Blank Space.

The Other Phoenix is...not as pleasant.

>It's going to be really tough for lamia to integrate into society, isn't it? I mean, who wants to send their kids to a school that has a bag of poison slithering around? Or live next to several bags of poison?
Which is why Isen is offering very proactive species integration incentives. (Have a state purchased dinner with some species you never knew! Free on us! Tara and Granny pretty much tackled him/promised him stuff to keep his ass in the UFK. He's been making speeches about the war every day to his people, based upon what's going on. He's having fun, but he wants to be out on the front.

With the shift in the war though, and the MIA of Kingfisher, he might make an appearance to show his appreciation to the troops and/or smash Billings and HIS's faces in until they agree to play nice.

That or he want to go meet/slay Old One.
>>

Rotting in jail as a POW. She thinks that Kingfisher cares enough for 'his apprentice' to come save her.
