Ugh. why are loading sheets for Aircraft so hard to find? I just want to know what they could put on what hardpoint, and instead I keep getting pictures of airsofters. I don't care about airsofters! I just want to go back to work on this damn homebrew project! Is that too much to ask?

Anyway.

As usual, I'm on the IRC.

Merlin yawns, and you follow suit, chuckling to yourself as you stretch out- thoroughly enjoying a real damn bed for a change, even though you know it's your last morning in it. Regardless, after almost two solid weeks sleeping on a folding cot in the hangar, it's an amazing feeling to have a real bed.

Still, you can't say you question the call. More than once, it allowed you a few hours sleep while they factory team ironed out some unexpected kink, only to send you right back to the range complex again. You'd like to think that just the act of you being there helped- you and Merlin were available to them, being woken more than once to help with an issue that had popped up. You figure that, had you had to go back to the house to sleep, some of the less pressing things would have waited- and you barely scraped in the time to get the last issues worked out with the Agile threes.

1/2
>>
And Merlin certainly got the worst of it there- she's got dark circles under her bloodshot eyes, a sure sign of sleep deprivation. Still, she pulled you out of the proverbial fire more than once- in one case, deplaning after a flight, helping the techs while you dozed, then heading right back up with you on the next flight once the issue had been corrected. You hope that your transit to Virginia is quiet enough you can catch up on the sleep deficit.

It came as a welcome relief last night when, upon wheeling into the hangar and shutting down your engines, the factory crew greeted you with a bottle of champagne- apparently having decided your combined efforts warranted some sort of celebration. You even gave Merlin a small glass of it- though they were considerate enough to get sparkling grape juice as well. You got back to the house and almost immediately racked out, barely pausing to climb out of your worn flight gear.

The house stands mostly empty, all the witches except the twins having left for the base at hunter's point early in the morning. Your helmet bags sit by the door- your sea bags having gone with the rest of the squadron. Your two jets are due to meet the Saratoga south of San Clemente island- you won't actually go wheels up for another hour or so.

Downstairs, you can hear the TV and smell leftover breakfast being warmed up- you'd gotten up long enough to bid the rest of the witches a safe trip, then immediately headed back to bed, leaving them to cook. The twins, themselves overworked and underslept, did the same. You didn't have it in you to wake Merlin up, though, and just let her sleep.

You've got a bit of free time- though you could really do with a shower and a shave, it isn't critical at the second. You could also use chow and coffee- and you can't decide which is more important.

[x] Shower and a shave, first, then food.

You decide- perhaps with some prompting from the overwhelming desire to experience that mythical thing called 'hot water' that's been a sorely lacking commodity in the past few weeks- that you need a shower. You'd left out a clean flight suit- the only one you have left, actually, the rest are damn near unserviceable anymore, though you'd planned to snag a few from issue or clothing and sales before you fly out today.

Stepping into the shower, you're greeted by a cloud of steam and you silently thank the building's plumbing contractors for their outstanding work with the water heater. You're sure that, if they haven't already, the twins will be doing so later- everyone loves hot water, when they can get it. One of those things civilians will never quite get, you think.

Cleaning up usually takes you longer than your counterparts for one major reason- you shave with a straight razor. Your granddad taught you, years ago, and the habit stuck- they're easier to work with than a disposable, especially when you're on a long cruise, since, with good maintenance, they'll stay sharp the entire way. Too many friends have told horror stories of trying to keep themselves clean shaven with a six week old blade.

1/2
>>
You do feel a lot more human, though, stepping out of the head and back into your room. Merlin's up and moving, if barely. “Good morning, Frank.” She greets, stuffing her poncho liner into her flight bag.

“Shower's free if you want it.” You return, trying to think of anything you need to pack- and coming up blank after you stuff your hygiene kit into your flight bag.

She nods. “Thanks. Clarissa has the weather briefing downstairs, if you want to see it. I looked over it last night though, unless something's changed it looks good. Clear and a million all the way out. Oh, and the ground crew wanted to go over loading with you, they asked me but I said I didn't know.”

You nod, lacing up your boots and jamming your worn gloves into a thigh pocket. “Anything else?” You ask, noting that, as long as she's talking work, her characteristic hesitation seems to be gone. You're not sure what that means, though you're relatively sure the shrinks would make something of it.

She shakes her head. “N-no. I'm going to shower, if that's ok, then I'll come down and see if there's anything left to eat. You weren't going to leave, were you?”

[] Well, I was going to shoot down to the hangar and get loading squared away, then come back for chow.
[] Nah, I'll grab chow and we can head over to the hangar together afterwards.
[] No, I wanted to look over the weather myself, just in case.
[] I figured I'd go grab food from somewhere first- the twins probably ate everything already.

[x] Nah, I'll grab chow and we can head over to the hangar together afterwards.

You shake your head. “Nah, I'll go grab chow if there's any left then we can head over to the hangar together.” You say, trying to shake the sinking suspicion you're forgetting something important.

You grab your bag and head downstairs after Merlin nods, reassuring yourself that, if you are forgetting something, She'll probably remember it for you.

The twins are both up and moving, though, in Alyssa's case, only just barely. Assuming you apply the technical definition of 'aware' and 'moving'. You'd honestly class it more as a zombie shamble, really. Clarissa, meanwhile, is rummaging through the oversized fridge, a plate in one hand and a microwave breakfast burrito held in her teeth like a dagger.

“Morning, ladies.” You greet, surveying the food laid out- Clarissa, apparently, cooked.

Alyssa grumbles something mostly intelligible, and you don't really catch her sister's response from around the burrito. You're about to ask for a clarification when she bites it in half, swallows the mouthful without seeming to chew, and repeats her statement.

“Morning, Frank.” She says. “Aly's being useless again, so I cooked what they left. There's some omelettes and hashbrowns, that's about it. Unless you want the other one of Slider's burritos.”

She takes another bite and grimaces. “They're not very good.”

1/3
>>
“I... uh, I'll pass.” You say, with a laugh, loading up a plate with the food- the hashbrowns are mixed with some other leftovers, onions and bell peppers, you think, and the omelets are a mix- some are plain, others have all kinds of fillings in them. You grab a promising looking one- and pour a cup of coffee, sitting down at the table.

Clarissa joins you, setting out her own plate, heaped high with food, her own coffee mug dwarfing your own. “I made a second pot,” She says. “So be sure to fill a thermos or something for the flight.”

You nod. “Anything I ought to be aware of?” You ask, indicating the weather sheets on the other end of the table.

She shrugs. “Not really.” She says, around a mouthful of hashbrowns. “Supposed to be clear and unlimited all the way out. Only thing unusual is we're flying in armed, but I heard that's a new wartime policy. VF two should have a CAP up, so we'll probably run into them.”

“Two?” You ask. “Tomcats?”

She nods. “New ones, too. Echocats.”

You feel a brief twinge of loss at that, remembering you're barred from flying any USN aircraft not assigned to your squadron. “Who else is there?” You ask. “Two's with... what is it, carrier wing two?”

She nods again. “Yeah. Them, VA thirty four in intruders, and VFA one-three-seven and eighty six in hornets. Plus some marine helo outfit and the supporting squadrons.”

“Sounds like it's a full house.” You note.

“Yeah. Well, Tabby was saying there's room aboard for another mixed squadron like ours, but the Atlantic fleet isn't going to put them aboard unless something happens to the Big E.” She responds.

You nod, agreeing with that, at least. The Pacific fleet's had, as far as you know, the majority of the witch assets in the navy for most of the war. Now that they're getting them, at least the Atlantic fleet commander is being sensible and not stacking them all on one ship.

2/3
>>
You're alerted to Merlin's presence with a hug- around the chair, so her arms barely reach your sides. You chuckle, patting her elbow before she lets go- getting her own food then joining you at the table.

“Anything else?” You ask, and Clarissa shakes her head.

“Nah. As soon as- wow, Sammy. You eat quick.” She says, looking over at Merlin's plate- which is already three quarters gone.

Merlin's only response is a small burp and a small “Excuse me.”

She finishes up quickly, and you carry your plates- and both of your thermos into the kitchen, topping them both off from the full pot there.

“Me and Aly will meet you two at the hangar.” Clarissa says. “hopefully she won't miss breakfast again.”

[x] “Make sure that she doesn't, we're going to miss afternoon chow as it is.”

“Make sure she doesn't.” You say, looking at Clarissa. “We're going to miss afternoon chow as it is, and we can't exactly hit a drive through on the way.”

She shrugs. “If you say so. I think she could stand to lose a few pounds, personally.”

“I heard that!” Alyssa yells down the stairs.

You smile and shrug. “Regardless. Makes sure she gets some food in her.”

Merlin meets you by the door, handing you a rubber band bound stack of envelopes. “Y-you almost left your mail, Frank. I thought you put this in your sea bag?”

“Yeah... “ You say, turning the stack over in your hands. “So did I. Thanks kiddo.”

Your walk over to the hangar is too short. You take a second to look back at the house after closing the door, noting that even the squadron crest has been removed from over it. You can't help but grin and shake your head as you pass the pool- apparently, there's a youth group there. A few of the kids watch you and Merlin walk by.

You pull your helmet out of it's spot on top of your wall locker in the support shop, checking it over before running it's leads into their connectors near your neck at the back of the vest and clipping it to the D-rings. It's brand new, effectively, though you notice some support shop joker has painted- very well, you have to admit- a skull face in stark white over the front of it and it's hard-plated mask. Merlin's isn't painted except for her call sign along the front. You'll have to rectify that later, you think.

In the hangar, the factory team, along with a navy ordinance crew, have busied themselves cleaning the place up- both wyverns are almost spotless, and their weapons doors hang open, the Tesla cannon- a particle beam weapon, apparently based off his designs from the twenties, since modified and modernized- hangs from it's mount along the centerline, while a quartet of agile IIIs occupies both of the nacelle bays. The top mounted bays- above and behind the intakes, in slight bumps- you can't see, but expect to be similarly loaded.

Mr. Perry, the team's unofficial liaison for you, greets you.

“Frank, Samantha!” He says, shaking your hands in turn. “We- ah. I arranged your loading for you already, I hope you two don't mind.” He says, gesturing back to the wyverns. “The tops have a Phoenix II each- the one fifty twos you and Samantha tried out in Alaska. Testing came back good, they've made a few improvements. Careful with them though, the launch for them is angled up, so they're no good in close.”

[] Sounds fine, Mr. Perry. Anything else?
[] Hmm... maybe a few changes. (OOC- there'll be a loading page done before too long and available on pastebin. For now, though, your centerline bay can handle the Tesla weapon, 16 agiles, 8 amraams, or four phoenix II missiles.)

[x] Sounds fine, Mr. Perry. Anything else?

“Sounds fine, Mr. Perry. Anything else?” You say, looking over the aircraft maintenance log and noting that it shows no known faults- the factory crew worked miracles on the aircraft these last couple weeks, having damaged and faulted components swapped out inside of an hour, usually. That said, they didn't actually have much to do- the wyvern is a robust bird, it seems like.

He shakes his head. “Not at all. We- uh, We're going to start working with VX four on the other weapons as soon as they get their refit aircraft. If we're lucky we should be able to get one or two more done in a month or so.”

You nod, looking back over your shoulder as the twins walk into the hangar. “Sounds good.”

He looks up at the clock, then over at the twins. “Well, I- uh. You'll probably want to go over your flight. It was a pleasure working with all of you. Please, be safe.”

You shake his hand again, as does Merlin. The Twins both hug him- you almost think his glasses are going to fog over- before he walks over to talk with some more of the brass. The ground crew is lining up for a FOD walk. Honestly, it's largely symbolic- the floor is spotless anyway- but it's still tradition.

Meanwhile, the twins are looking at you.

“Anything we should go over?” Alyssa says. “I mean, I can't think of anything, but...”

“That's because you're too busy thinking about Frank's cousin, aren't you?” Clarissa says.

“Hardly. Besides, he likes Katya, any fool could see that.” Alyssa responds.

[x] “Yeah, actually. Let's review this crap one more time, in case something comes up.”

“Alright, let's recap, just in case.” You say, pulling them along behind the ground crew. Distracted as you are, you might miss anything, but it's no big deal, you think.

“Straight ferry flight. What's to go over?” Alyssa says, walking carefully forward, scanning the ground.

“Well, we could be ordered to supplement the CAP aircraft if the fleet commander thinks we need to.” Clarissa says. “Which would have been a problem if you hadn't eaten, lissa.”

“First you say I need to loose weight, now you're saying I need to eat. Make up your mind.” Alyssa responds.

“I-” Clarissa starts, before you cut her off.

“Either way.” You say, interrupting. “Are you squared away for a CAP mission?”

“Sure.” Clarissa says, shooting a glare at her twin. “We're armed same as you. Though they'll have to send up a tanker if they want to keep us on station too long.”

“Weather?” You ask, already knowing the answer.

“Clear and unlimited, light and scattered stratocumulus well under our flight path. Nothing higher level than that in the area though- that storm system that blew through a few weeks back sucked all the energy right out of the atmosphere.” Clarissa says, while her sister makes a 'hmph' noise behind her. “Weather shop said we might see some cirrus forming if we're up long enough, but it should still be light and scattered.”

“Fuel?” You ask, again, already knowing the answer.

“We'll be landing heavy.” Merlin says. “Unless we join the CAP.”

“Ok. Standard spacing, and you two will land first.” You say, nodding to yourself as the flight crew turns around. “They'll tow us out before engine start.”

>>
Alyssa nods and the four of you head to your respective planes- you have to give Merlin a lift so she can reach the bottom of the ladder- and you climb up after her, just sitting down as her seat retracts the rest of the way into the cockpit, the hatch above it thumping closed. The straps in this bird are easier to reach- thank god- and you unhook your helmet and strap in, connecting your umbillical lines to their ports in the aircraft. In the event you have to eject, the oxygen will switch to an internal bottle in the vest- just a few minutes worth, but unless you're ejecting from somewhere in the troposphere, you've got plenty of breathable oxygen.

Your preflights, as usual, with Merlin, are short and mostly just for show- she tends to handle most of the 'office work', leaving you free to look over any last second information. The cockpit screens begin to light up as she cycles them, running off the battery cart- which is still hooked up, for the moment. Visible light, sensor overlay, HUD overlay, all flash on then toggle off- she's not looking to drain the battery cart, afterall.

2/3
>>
An aircraft tractor hooks up with a slight bump, slowly pulling you out of the hangar into the morning sun. Hooked to an APU, your screens cycle back on, the faint hexagonal outlines almost imperceptible as the computers go to work, welding the sensor input into one comprehensive image. Next to you, you can see the Twin's wyvern being towed out, and, near the next hangar over, several staff cars and the factory team. Mr. Perry seems to be giving them the sales pitch- as he calls it- explaining what's going on with his company's most advanced offering to date.

You begin the short process of firing your turbines up- they both light without a huccup, the rising whine not yet gaining the characteristic deep roar as you advance the throttle. The ground crew detaches the APU and you're on internal power.

You follow a marshal out, taxing past the hangar, where you can make out more than a little brass. Seems like the air force has taken an interest in the Wyvern, too, calling off the F-15ADCAP program for the time being.

On the runway, the twins line up just off of and behind your left wing. The air traffic boss gives you takeoff at your discretion.

[x] Standard climb out, gradually climb to cruising altitude.

Still mindful of that tomcat you crashed, your takeoff is relatively sedate- climbing out and executing the southerly turn off the runway as you retract your gear and climb up to your cruise height- in this case, right around ten thousand feet. Low, but then again, you aren't traveling far at all.

The flight is short- under an hour, easily, with such a short distance to cross- you can practically see the carrier group even before you finish leveling off. You grin as the computers pick out the CAP aircraft- ringing them on your cockpit screens and displaying heading, altitude, and type- all easily obtainable from allied aircraft. You also note that, currently, you 'suggested best' weapon is the Phoenix II- as the range closes, the computer changes to the Tesla weapon, then to the Agile III.

The two CAP fighters- tomcat E models- join up on you, flying in loose formation. After a short series of questions- standard practice- you're directed to land.

“Great.” Alyssa grouches over your squadron net. “I love landing heavy birds.”

Still, her approach is flawless, catching the third wire on the carrier deck as you orbit the carrier. You note that the entire island looks different- you weren't told how badly the ship was hit, but it looks like they transplanted a whole new island onto it- from where, you have no idea. If they did, the fact that they managed to repair all the other damage and do that in as short a time frame as they did really speaks to the skill and drive of the dock crews, you think.

You neatly manage to match her minutes later, laughing internally at air force pilots that whine about difficult airfields. Try to match a carrier deck for difficult! Hah.

Up close, the island is definitely different- similar, in many regards, though you note the presence of additional sea sparrow mounts, and it's longer- notably so, stretching from the starboard fore elevator to the aft elevator there.

You're directed alongside the forward elevator, deplaning after making sure all systems are shut down. You climb down first- having to help Merlin down off the last rung- her height playing havoc with her.

“Hiya, Pipsqueak.” A familiar voice greets you as you turn around. Merlin freezes for an instant, then turns around.
“H-hi Sara. I didn't know you'd be here.” She says.

Her sister- her hair now in a pony tail, but otherwise the same as you remember her from... gods, how long ago was it? Feels like years- shrugs with a half-smile. “I didn't either, until the last second. Guess they don't need me in Japan, and VAW one one three was only too happy to have a witch.”

“W-well that's good.” Merlin says.

Sara makes it a point to look past her little sister. “Hmm. So this is the new Wyvern, huh? Seems like a lot of plane for you, Sammy. You sure you can handle it?”

Lieutenant Commander, and we have much more combat time/kills than she does. This is an attitude she could take in TOPGUN, not after her sister has shot down upwards of...15 now? enemy planes and been shot down once herself.
>>
>>26744415

Do this
>>
>>26744727
15 feels a little low. I'd swear it was at least 20, probably even 30.

But yeah, merlin has much more combat experience than she could dream of.

Is Merlin still a LT (j.g) btw?

What is her sisters combat record? During our time here on the main land she could have been bagging kills left and right. We don't know much other than the last time we saw her was forever ago.
>>
>>26744803

Shes AWACS, she won't be getting kills herself but she'd have been up there just about in every major air battle.
>>
>>26744803
Considering she's a Hawkeye/FAC witch? If she's getting any kills at all it means the fighter screen she went up with had utterly failed at their jobs. She's a second-line witch. She doesn't see direct combat.
>>
>>26744800

Don't antagonise the awacs.

Besides, shes also her sister. We'll kill their relationship. We just need her to see Merlin in combat once and she'll not be so flippant.

Besides, it might be because shes really worried, wanting to see if Merlin can be transferred somewhere safer.

She's AWACS. It's obvious that it bothered her too, the last time we locked horns with her at the family gathering, she didn't take it so well.

Throwing in with this lot

So instead of learning from that experience, she decides to give Merlin shit upon landing? Really?

Remember the ages of the people we're dealing with here. I honestly think it's a little excessive for us to be jumping to Merlin's defense at every single slight thrown her way, especially among sisters.

The best way to deal with it is to acknowledge one very basic fact: Merlin is an ace. Best RIO in fleet.
>>
>>26745041
Yes I do, one I talk to on a semi-regular basis and the other I damn near never talk to because we are way too different to get along for long periods of time. So no, it doesn't work that way for everyone
>>
>>26745041
i do have siblings, but we damn well know when to poke at each other and when to be professional.
>>
>>26745147

Sure when it matters but now? It's not like its in combat. If she gave this shit in a pitched battle, thats an entirely different story.
>>

>>
>>26745195
Professional means anytime you or somebody you like is insulted I guess.
>>
>>26745195
well, if, and i mean IF she pulls this crap in battle, and we make it out alive. it will be THE LAST TIME she'll pull that crap! that kind of bull shit in a fire fight will get people on our side killed in a hurry.

other wise, let it go and let merlin deal with it as she can.
>>
>>26745225
I know right?! Snark-levels are going to go through the roof later on when relationships start becoming a bigger factor.

Professionals or not, witches are generally teenaged girls, and I don't know of a pettier social group than that.

[x] Other! (write in)

You shake your head, popping the clasps that hold the face mask in place and pulling your helmet off. Sara visibly pales when she sees you.

You wrap your arm around Merlin protectively and grin. “Best systems operator in the fleet, right here,” You say, locking eyes with her. “Bar none. How you doing, Sara?”

She shakes her head and recovers remarkably well. “Lieutenant Bishop. I'd heard you died in Alaska. Glad to see that rumor wasn't true.”

You frown. “It's not exactly a secret I'm alive, ya know.”

She laughs, the challenge returning to her eyes. “Maybe not, but I've been with the Atlantic fleet and in Europe most of the war, news is kind of hard to get downrange like that. We can compare notes later.”

“Yeah,” you say, nodding. “And, by the way, that's Lieutenant Commander Bishop.”

She stiffens a bit. “Sir.” She says before stalking off to a waiting pair of strikers in the island racks. Merlin's head slowly tracks her sister.

“I-I just wish I was as good as she was.” She says, almost imperceptibly over the noise of the flight deck.

“Oh, no. No no.” You say, shaking your head. “We'll have none of that. You're the best there is.”

“But-”

“No. No but. The best. You can even run around in your skivvies if you- “ You catch yourself when she turns beet red.

“Well, you could. I'm not saying you should, but you could.” You say, shrugging. “Unless that boyfriend of yours pops up. Then I'm going to find you one of one of those... oh hell, what are they called. Burquas. That's it.”

Merlin looks at you like you've totally lost your mind.

“Anyway. Let's go see the boss and try and catch chow. I thought for sure we were going to miss it.” You say, laughing and ruffling your RIO's hair.
>>
We go easy for now, as we've just arrived. If she keeps it up, we slap her down HARD. Pulling this kind of shit while on active combat duty could put Merlin, Fronk and the entire squadron at risk, and should be dealt with appropriately.
>>
and that's it for the night guys!

As always, I hope you guys enjoyed the run, and I'll admit, I'm kind of excited to get into the meat of this arc, it should be fun.

Oh! about the writer's pack. I went in and had to do some adjusting to sections of it- no big, but you know how it goes. Looking at next week there- I promise I'm working on it though! haha!

Anyway, cheers guys. We'll be back next week, same time, and till then, I'm in the IRC!

Cyril is really Merc's character, at this point. I honestly had no plans to go anywhere with her, and, other than the one chance to talk to her, which was, in itself not really something I'd planned to do when I introduced her, she wasn't going to show up again.

...well, that's not entirely true, but the thread she was going to show up in didn't play out- my sounding board guys thought it wasn't a great idea, so we didn't do it.

>>26745450

Depends. So far, you guys have managed to a void a few deaths, so maybe you can continue with the charmed life?
>>

>Depends. So far, you guys have managed to a void a few deaths, so maybe you can continue with the charmed life?

Considering that we've already passed them, care to tell us who just scraped by?

I'd prefer if he didn't. Leaves the suspense, and avoids any unnecessary complications in-thread
>>

Well, considering she's missing a leg and in American custody, I don't see much happening with Cyril in the forseeable future.

(Though fortunately she hasn't realized Katya was the one who shot her down.)
