Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You've learned that Lucifer, an angel second only to Sandalphon, is leading an excavation effort - and his goal is the very artifact you've set your sights on, the Staff of Winds. He's using Vonnegut's resources to accomplish this task as fast as possible, but his anxiousness to see it done created a rift between himself and the crime lord. You capitalized on that, earning Vonneguts allegiance and promising him access to your contacts, and to have him accompany you if you ever meet with the Black Lady, Queen of Vampiria.

But before Vonnegut could create his promised distraction, the earth split open - and the constructs of City 002 attacked in great force. You and your party managed to reach the inside of the excavation, and you discovered it's an airship once piloted by Flint's ancestors, long since buried after they fled from the skysever.

The ancient technology recognized Flint's touch, and began to power up once again. Poised so close to finding the staff, you decided to pilot the wind-driven ship through the storm of the skysever to reach the islands of Xile, the floating kingdom of Aeolus.

While your allies crewed the ship, you moved to the upper decks, where Lucifer was battling against a powerful robot powered by an earth dynamo. You were forced to intervene before the fight ripped the ship apart. Lucifer ignored you, for the most part, and your combined attacks destroyed the robot. You salavaged its dynamo core for yourself.

The ship entered the skysever, and, exposed on the decks, you were blown into the storm. You managed to fight your way through the winds and make it to Xile, injured, but in one piece.

You quickly ran across a strange abberation of darkness, powerful, but seemingly mindless. You evaded its attacks and made your escape. It briefly tailed you, then lost interest and let you go.

Meanwhile, the remnants of the airship made it through the storm, but promptly plummeted to the ground in a storm of smoke and fire. The resident dragon does not seem to have taken too kindly to the disturbance.

You swim rapidly, and quickly distance yourself from the monster. The black orbs zip through the water around you, eating away at your environment, but you're able to dodge most of them.

To your surprise, the creature blinks past you, again firing. One of the orbs scrapes you, taking out a chunk of shadow. The burning acid hurts far more than you'd think. You grit through the pain and keep swimming. It fades after a short time, your aura working to repel the shadow magic.

This time, it doesn't follow you, and you quickly gain enough distance to put it out of your normal sensory range. You're not sure what was motivating it in the first place. Maybe it's mindless. Maybe you just got lucky. In either case, the water of the lake swiftly repairs your wound.

You surface at the opposite end of the lake.

>mana: 6/58

The forest looms in front of you. You're trying to decide on a direction when a break in the sky catches your attention. The blue is suddenly twisting, transforming into a swirling grey mass - and an airship flies through the wall.

It's a smoking wreck. Fire rages on the upper deck. Pieces of the hull are separating from the main body, creating a sight like a falling meteor storm. You can hear the plaintiff whining of the ship's thrusters as it tries to slow its descent all the way from here. It slams into the ground in the middle of the forest, where the slope rises up a small mountain.

You stare for a moment, shocked. Flint. Auriel. Ila. Adavan.

Abigail!

Just as you're about to start forward, you hear a roar as loud as an airship's engine - and the biggest dragon you've ever laid eyes on takes to the air, rising up out of the castle in the middle of the islands. It sweeps toward the wreckage. Its scales are a bright light blue - it's almost invisible against the sky. A powerful force of wind surrounds it.

You need to get over there, fast.

What do you do?

>risk flying over at top speed
>stay on the ground
>attack the dragon
>another strategy

Swim through the lakes/rivers to get as close as possible to the wreck then either fly or run. We are sanic fast in water.

So, we have options here.

Lemme lay out how I see this happening:

Step 1 Observe

-Where did our XP go?
-Why can he fly in the sever?
-Where is Vonnegut?
-Where is Lucifer?
-Where is the sun in the sky?

Step 2 Orient

Analyze if possible dragon

Step 3 Decide

-Take him down to the server & into a mexican standoff with Lucifer
-Take him for a swim & into a mexican standoff with the shadowmask

Step 4 Act

<For my next trick, I’ll need your hat, Vonnie. Help a dapper chap out, that is unless you’d rather take this sucker yourself.>

<Auriel, Flint, focus fire to grab his attention. Lure him to the (sever || water). Avadan, Abby, bind him and set him up for Vonnegut. When he’s close enough you slick the ground and get ready to push him into the lake, and poke a hole in his throat if possible. Ila, shadow puppet him if able, otherwise see what you can do. Then everybody either zero in on the base of his wings. Freeze them, and cut them off, then push him into the (sever || water).>

You need to go fast.

>mana: 0/58

You disappear from the lake's edge and flash through the trees like black lightning. Every second you occupy another spot; you peer through the leaves as best you can, warping from rock to tree branch to clearing. You're at the crash site in moments.

You fully outpaced the dragon.

>2 turns until it arrives

The ship is a burning wreck. The main hull lies in a deep crater, twisted and cracked; the adamantium is ashed over. You here a heavy clanging sound. A plate of metal flies free.

Auriel pokes her head out and breathes deep. "Thank the Light. Come on, child!" She climbs up, plants her legs on the edge of the steel, and reaches down. Abigail is pulled out next, her hair mussed and her face covered in soot, but she's in one piece.

You're on them in moments. <Abby! Are you alright? Are you hurt?>

"Shadow...you're ok." Abigail hugs you. "I'm fine. We thought you...I called for you, but..." She wipes her face with a hand, but all she manages to do is smug the ash on her chin.

Ila arrives next, deftly hopping out of the hull. She appears a bit more beat up, having fought at close range, but this does not detract from her usual acrobatic grace. Adavan heaves himself up after her.

<What about Flint? And Vonnegut?>

Auriel's face goes still. "The engine room was at the center of the ship. They're still down there. Probably ok," she adds quickly. "The engine is usually very heavily armored. They're probably just stuck."

A roar reminds you of the impending company.

<Abigail, we're going to hold off that dragon. I want you to summon while I take it head-on, alright?>

She nods. "Got it."

<The rest of you, search the ship. We're not leaving without Flint.>

Ila is already jumping back into the hull. Adavan and Auriel run after her. You begin to run in the direction of the dragon. Abigail summons a pair of reapers, which take your flanks. She jogs along to keep pace, but you're far head of her in short order.

The dragon is dead ahead, high in the sky. It doesn't seem to have noticed you yet.

Damn, but it's huge.

You notice the sun - it's odd. Despite the blue sky, it's hazy, as if stuck behind a heavy cloud. It's going to be night in an hour or so.

What do you do to attack the dragon? At the very least you've got to force it to land, or otherwise change direction, or it'll just continue on to the airship.

You stop and focus upon the dragon.

Its scales appear as tough as a dragon's scales usually are - but there's something else. They're coated in wind. It reminds you of an airship. Each scale has its own shield of wind.

But despite what this protection would imply, the skysever is not attacking the dragon. It flies with impunity.

It has an immense aura. It holds more magic than you do. Whether or not it's tougher in general, you couldn't say...but you'd be hard pressed to win, alone. The reapers on either side of you boost your confidence, somewhat. They're no pushovers.

Just ascertain whether or not it's outright hostile first, ya know?
>>

And Abby already knows!

..Wait, she knows we're Erebus, but not about our dragon fetish, fuck. Never mind.

So, backup plans. Does anyone think we can turn ourselves into a sling and start firing trees and boulders that we've ripped out of the ground at it?
>>
>>26761490
Just make sure not to reveal Flint's location. We want his attention away from the airship. Hopefully a shadow elemental claiming to be friends of the descandant of a family that fought Shadow will be a big enough "wtf?" to get his attention.

<Greetings, dragon!>

The dragon drifts into a long turn, doubling back over your head. <WHO SPEAKS? NO ONE HAS SPOKEN TO ME...IN A LONG TIME.>

<I am a companion of Sir Donovan Flint, descendent of the Goddavi family. We have returned...as he seeks to restore Aeolus's Order to its former glory!>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HomZkl-jX80

<GODDAVI!?!> The dragon's voice thunders in your head, and it lets out a roar like thunder. <TRAITORS! COWARDS THAT FLED AND ABANDONED THE MASTER! WE DO NOT SUFFER TRAITORS!> It hovers immediately above you. <AH, I SENSE YOU NOW. DARKNESS! WORKING WITH THE GODDAVIS! CONSPIRACY! WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN! YOUR DEATH WILL COME UPON MY WINGS!>

True to its word, the dragon flaps its wings. A gust of wind like a scythe of death glows with green energy. It and plummets toward you, and a wide swath of the forest around you!

What do you do?

>get the hell out
>Blink, just focus on escaping the blast radius

>some other strategy

>>
>>26761964
>HURR I KNOW STATISTICS.
It's kind of stupid to worry about "wasted" dice, yes, but they aren't random.
And thinking it's meaningless is even stupider, because, surprise, humans are superstitious. Sure, "dice karma" doesn't exist, but none of what we're doing right now exists either, it's just a bunch of light projected into our eyes, showing shapes some other guy wants other people to see.

Part of being human is doing irrational things for entertainment, if you want to roll, we have a right to get mad, because we fucking want to and that's what people do.
>>
>>26762052
Glad someone remembers.
>>
>>26762049
we could, if we had mana
>>
>>26762005
DICE are random, the dice that are rolled on /tg/ aren't. I don't feel like explaining this to you so someone else can have the liberty of explaining this to you.
>>
>>26762049
The wind dynamo powering our ship didn't stop the skysever from attacking completely, it just provided enough protection to keep it from shredding us.
>>
>>26762052
Remember what happened on the airship? The Airship flied unmolested until our earth dynamo negated the wind shield. If we can get the earth dynamo in close proximity to the dragon while it flies, the same might happen. If we used the dynamo like some magic earth grenade, despite the fact that earth magic is weaker here, it might be enough to put some hurt on the dragon.
>>
>waiting on consensus

You Blink behind the dragon, evading the growing blast of wind. You drop down onto its back -

<TRICKS OF THE SHADOW -> The dragon rolls in midair, pointing its belly toward you. <- WON'T FOOL ME!> It flaps its wings again.

You take a face full of razor wind as point-blank range. It feels like a mini-skysever, and you're caught totally in the open.

>you've taken 23 damage (58/81)

You land on the belly of the beast. It flips back over, flapping normally to regain altitude while attempting to shake you off. You cling on, barely.

You drive your limbs into its scales. It's like punching knives made out of adamantium. The wind sears your aura off your skin; it bites you with every touch. You crunch a couple of scales, but the dragon hardly notices the damage. The effort hurts you more than it.

>you've taken 5 damage (53/81)

You're on the dragon's back, but you're not sure how long you can stay there.

A few dozen of the trees where the wind hit are vaporized to sawdust. Abigail's reapers are gone, probably destroyed in the blast. Hopefully she'll cast something else.

At least it's distracted.

To everyone that wants to try and go inside the dragon, That only had a possibility of working last time because the dragon was heavily wounded to start with, and then we screwed it up and took heavy damage.

This dragon is leagues stronger than that, I really think we should use as much care as we can while fighting it, possibly retreating after dealing some damage.

A wing lifts high to twist the dragon once again - and that's your opportunity. You leap, and hook several claws around the front edge of the limb.

The dragon roars and shakes, but you hold on. You slam the joint where it connects to its torso. Your claws tear at the leading edge. Spikes of shadow drive into the leathery section of the wing. They're blunted by the wind, but you tear more than one gash.

The dragon's heavy aura of wind continues to buffet you at every turn.

>you've taken 3 damage (50/81)

The dragon spins, turning over and over. You set in hooks of shadow and hold on for dear life.

It spins faster. The wind turns with it, warping into a shell around first its skull, and then its neck. The cone of razor winds grows, and it spins still more rapidly.

Power is gathering behind the dragon.

This reminds you of your own ability. You feel a bit nervous.

But - you've managed to weather the storm. With all the dragon's power concentrated in its movement, you've done a lot more damage to the wing. It's half shredded, and the joint is cracked, bruised, and bleeding. But it's still functioning.

You're not sure you want to stick around for when the dragon takes off.

What do you do?

We took 24 damage from a normal failed roll, a critfail would kill us outright.

I'd rather have gone into this fight with a managable supply of mana.

Hopefully we can make it out of this in one piece, and with luck it will have lost a wing. When we come back to fight it again, we will be on much better ground, assuming we can find one of Xile's Mana pools.

You wrap half your body around the end of the wing.

And then you start to spin your aura in the opposite direction.

The auras both grow in size and power. The dragon's is a twisting thunderhead; yours is a refined point of honed Shadow. They spin, and grow, and spin, and grow.

The auras contact each other. An ugly sound screeches out as they rail against each other, aura on aura, as if the air itself is tearing apart at their point of meeting.

All the while, power grows behind you - and the dragon.

<YOU WILL NOT BEST ME!>

<We'll see.>

BOOM
BOOM

For an instant, you feel like you're being torn in half by the force.

There's an ugly rip, and then you're speeding away with a dragon's wing in your clutches. You cut out your supersonic almost immediately and try to get down to the ground - you can't fly here, not now.

You turn in time to see the dragon. A bloody gash is all that remains of its left flank; it's spinning out of control, straight for the edge of the islands. With a heavy -whumph-, it vanishes through the barrier and into the skysever's outer wall of winds.

>you've taken 5 damage (45/81)

You hit the ground hard. For a moment, you just stand there and breath. That was intense. You wonder if you killed the dragon.

Maybe. Maybe not.

An explosion of lightning magic in the direction of the airship wreck snaps you back to the present.

Lightning? Oh, shit.

You sprint in that direction and try to come up with a plan.

What do you do?

Since Abigail was along to help us deal with the dragon, odds are good she saw what just happened, and will see that the dragon is mostly dealt with for the time being, and will head back when she sees the same lightning magic that we just did. No need to delay our return to have us get back at the same time, I don't think.

The sooner we get back, the less time Lucifer has facing down fewer adversaries. Also I kind of want to catch what he and Auriel have to say to one another, which is likely to be occurring sooner rather than later.

Not sure this matters too much, seeing as higher-tier summons can attempt to break control if the summoner dismisses them, and I'm not sure she's quite practiced enough for us to actually WANT her to dismiss summons rather than just letting her send them off to fight until they keel over instead.

>you gain 5 hp (50/81)
>you gain 3 mana (3/58)
>you gain 2 EXP (13)

You race back to the wreckage post haste. You skid to a halt at the edge of the tree line.

Lucifer is standing in front of 7 other angels that seem to have survived a trip inside the airship. Opposite them, adjacent to the wreckage, are your friends - Auriel, Ila, Adavan, and, to your relief, Flint. You note pinkish skin on his right hand - freshly healed. He looks drained, too.

Both sides look exhausted. Auriel is staring Lucifer down. Lucifer's gaze flicks between her and Adavan. The lich is poised with another magical attack primed and ready, one hand in front of him, another pressed to his temple. Ila is lingering near the back of your group, sizing up each angel. You don't see Abigail anywhere. She must still be in the forest.

Vonnegut stands in an odd space between the two groups, and he's sweating bullets. His fingers work madly on the edge of his hat.

What do you do?

Obviously, the battle-hardened angel with veritable centuries of combat experience.

You think for a moment. <Tap the pommel of your sword if I should position myself to attack Lucifer. Tap twice for the angels. Tap three times if you want me to wait as backup.>

We don't ask the soldier with centuries of experience for tactical advice and then just ignore it.

We should also be on the lookout BEHIND us for Abigail making her way back to the ship; if we miss her and she comes rushing in to try and turn the tide of a currently nonexistent battle, it's probably going to throw a wrench into whatever this plan might be.

>telepathy can be heard from shouting distance. if the target could hear our voice they can hear our thoughts

>>26763951
It's not about her being stupid, it's about the fact that her most potent combat asset is summoned creatures, which would need to be summoned before she arrives at the battle to be efficient.

She's also not going to be putting herself in front of her summoned creatures, since that'd put her in unnecessary danger if there was a battle in progress.

We'd like to see her coming before she gets in range for her summons to be detected.
>>
>>26763978
Neato.
We should measure that some time (when we aren't facing imminent danger or disaster) and get a more exact range on it.
>>
>>26763978

>>
>>26763978
If we start mindshouting, that kind of ruins the point of having focused telepathy on Auriel when trying to make combat plans. It's entirely possible that people with less experience, and ESPECIALLY Vonnegut, who is already on edge, is going to give us away if they overhear wide-range telepathy.

"Auriel."

"You're looking a bit under the weather."

Lucifer rolls his eyes. "You never could stop being a bitch."

"I'm surprised you're still standing," Auriel says. "At some point, a man's body just can't support a head that big."

"You don't want to fight me, do you?" Lucifer asks.

"Look who's talking."

Lucifer's eyes flick over Adavan. "You've turned traitor...but I admit you've scrounged up some notable scraps from the corners of the world. Is he on loan from Fang?"

"I haven't turned traitor. I've turned back to the Light." Auriel stands straight. "We were cooped up in our city for too long. We were scarred by the war, and we never healed. It's not to late to change, Lucfier. I did."

Lucifer snorts. "Spare me. More immediately...we're trapped here, with no way home. Your little pet Shadow may have dealt with the dragon, at great personal cost, I'm sure. But there's bound to be a more few things around Xile that we'd rather not face after having ripped each other to pieces. Aeolus did not like outsiders in his kingdom...even his allies."

"Are you suggesting a truce?"

"No," Lucifer says, waving a hand. "I'm suggesting we turn around and begin walking in opposite directions. I want nothing to do with you...and you want nothing to do with me. So let it be."

"I wonder what Sandalphon would say concerning such apathy."

"Sandalphon isn't here, is he?"

"Pragmatism always was your best quality." Auriel nods. "Fine. You go your way, I'll go mine."

Lucifer smiles. "It'll be a little contest, 5th. Let's see who can find the staff first." His gaze snaps to the crime lord. "Vonnegut, let's move."

A man's head pokes up from the wreckage behind Vonnegut. And then another, and a third. You recognize the surviving handful of his men from the engine room. "...boss, whata we do?"

how hurt is Lucy? would we stand a good chance now?
>>
>>26764143
Hey SM, doesn't really have anything to do with the current situation, but is there a difference between the aura of mages and of magical items?
It just occurred to me that, if not, we could try to disguise ourselves as some magical object in order to evade being killed or to be smuggled in somewhere we don't belong.

Nah. Better to keep lucy thinking we are still dead.

>>26764167
No way we could do it.
We could buy the ability, but be short the MP to use it, or burn for the MP and not have eneough for the power.
>>
>>26764195
Sleeping gas really only works on weak enemies.
It's a power for nonlethal missions, not combat.

Every aura for every item and individual is slightly unique, and can be recognized over time. They're like faces. Every face has common characteristics, but once you've seen the same person five times you remember them.

Items generally don't feel quite like humans, but it's not a bad idea. Depends on the customs agent.
>>
TBH I just want to get them to walk away. Then we set our allies to recovering/finding the staff while we stalk and murder Lucifer and co. through the jungle.

It would be nice if we could pick off his angels before getting into a fight with him.

They aren't much to -us-, but they are fairly strong to the rest of the party, and having them out of the way would let us concentrate everything on Lucifer.

>>
>>26764560
I would imagine that is how we get out of here.

Find a mana pool, set a marker for our allies, teleport out, the open the "Stays open" gate for them to come through.

We would be able to get back whenever we wanted.
>>
>>26764589
Doesn't have to be a shadow pool. Just a mana pool.
>>
>>26764589
Any mana pool will work for the purposes of teleport.
>>
>>26764589
Technically we don't need a shadow mana pool. The ability only says "mana pool", it doesn't specify a flavor.

I find it strange that chaos pools work as well as order pools though.

Or make a mana pool.

>>
>HP: 54/81

You decide to speak.

<Vonnegut.>

The man flinches, but he looks so nervous already it just sort of blends in. He glances around.

<If you'd feel unsafe going with them, you can always stick with us. Our alliance will hold.>

Vonnegut's haughty calm slowly returns as he gets a grip - a confidence born of the fact that you faced down the dragon and survived. "No, Lucifer. I've got other plans?"

"Excuse me?"

"It's like you said," the crime lord says. Now he's smiling. "Sandalphon isn't here."

Lucifer glances at Vonnegut, Auriel, and back. He narrows his eyes. "And that is what I get for hiring a thief." He gestures sharply, bringing a fist down into his body.

His angels move as one - obviously they're familiar with the command. Each one lays a hand on Lucifer. An instant later, there's a spike of Lightning and Light, and they're gone, -moved- somewhere else. You're rather impressed despite yourself - you can't take people along when you Blink.

Auriel sighs. She looks ready to collapse. Adavan steadies her, and she nods gratefully before getting her feet back under her. "So...slimeball. You coming with us?"

"Humph. I'm not going with you. I'm going with Shadow."

You emerge from the Shadows. <I'm glad we were able to escape that unscathed. But now he could be anywhere, and with his speed, he could very well beat us to the Staff of Winds. Auriel...are you sure that was the right decision?>

She nods. "Lucfier was tired, but his tired could still wipe us out. Maybe not you..." She gestures back at the party. "I wasn't willing to risk 8 on 5, not in the state we're in. Someone would have gotten hurt. Or worse." She looks at Vonnegut. "Didn't know you'd throw him to the demons, though."

"He leaves much to be desired as a business partner," Vonnegut says shortly. "We should vacate the wreck."

<Is there anything we can salvage?> you ask.

>con't
>>
>>26764659
I think we're all intending on putting a pool down in Haven when we can.
>>
>>26764675
>forgot trip

"Core burned out trying to keep us shielded," Auriel says. "Nothing else worth lugging around." Auriel frowns. "By the way, where's Abigail?"

<...she was in the woods, controlling her summons. I assume she'd make her way back here.>

"...Abigail!" Auriel calls.

Flint cups a hand to his mouth. "ABIGAIL!"

His voice fades into the trees.

There's no answer.

You feel an ugly flutter in the pit of your stomach.

Yeah, SM was not going to pass up on an opportunity like that.

Welp. Time to think positive because it's the only defense I have left now. Abby has better senses than us, so maybe she's just hiding from the danger since she spotted it. Or maybe she just found something interesting and went to investigate.

guys i just want you to remember that SM has shoved a total of four huge enemies at us in quick succesion.

I think hes telling us to eat them because we are going to need it soon.

I know we probably won't go for the damn dynamo but the Shadow Thing, Lucy, and the dragon all need to be CONSUMED.
>>
>>26765078
I don't think he's telling us anything other than that Xile is dangerous and Lucifer is fucking powerful.

A good move since it being revealed that Shadow is actually a reincarnated god of order was very likely to make a lot of players severely overestimate our abilities.
