DEAR GRADUATE,

On behalf of the Sturmfuhrer Academy, it is my pleasure to congratulate you on graduating from the standard general education curriculum.

Now begins a new stage in your education education. With the basic skills and training done, it is now time to learn some of the advanced and specialized skills that will lead you to become proper soldiers and officers of t he Gallian Armed Forces, or even the Demons of Randgriz, should you so choose.

HOWEVER, student, since you have graduated in the top ten percent of your class you are eligible to choose to enroll in one of our two SPECIAL WARFARE SCHOOLS:

1. FLIGHT TRAINING: Carve your own path in the untamed skies!

2. TIER ONE TRAINING: Train and fight with the best of the best!

Whichever specialization you choose, remember that you're not learning these skills to fight for yourself, but for your comrades and for Gallia. I don't have the power to decide what path you choose for life, but I do hope you will succeed at whatever you strive to do.

Sincerely,
Headmaster Jager Stumfuhrer

I'm honestly kind of surprised. I would've thought more people would've gone with flight training. Oh well...

Well, it looks like we're going to be trying to go for the coveted TIER ONE! Now let's see who among our little starting cast we'll be playing as!

CHARLOTTE STURMFUHRER: One of the dreaded Sturmfuhrer twins, Charlotte seems to have inherited her parents' best and worst traits. Skilled and confident, but can be stupidly stubborn at times. Ultra protective of her twin sister.

FALYNN STURMFUHRER: The second Sturmfuhrer twin, Falynn seems to be the complete opposite of Charlotte. Quiet, reserved, and keeps to herself mostly. She's even a bit cold to her own family with the exception of Charlotte.

LUCINA: The ultimate result of the terrifying combination of Ramirez and Tarin's genes, Lucina seems to be nothing but the model soldier. Skilled, silent, and deadly. However, her less than normal upbringing means she's rather weak in social skills.

LUCAS WILLIAMS: Half knight and half Darcsen, Lucas is every bit the naive idealist, hoping that there are still heroes left in man. Very nice and trusting, almost to a fault.

EDWIN HOHENZOLLERN: An exchange student from Belka, Edwin takes his noble lineage very seriously, and has a very dim view of those he doesn't see as worthy equals (which is pretty much everybody). Extremely intelligent and cunning, but relies a bit too much on his intellect.

MORGAN HATHCOCK: A bit of an enigma, Morgan just seemingly showed up out of nowhere at the school. However, while his past is a bit fuzzy, nobody could doubt his natural talent and didn't ask any questions. Franky, Morgan seems to prefer it that way.

OTHER: Or do you want a custom character?

CHOOSE YOUR FATE!

Don't forget SASR.
"the field modification of L1A1 and L2A1 rifles by the Australian Special Air Service Regiment SASR for better handling. Nicknamed "The Bitch", these rifles were field modified, often from heavy barrel L2A1 automatic rifles, with their barrels cut off right in front of the gas block, and often with the L2A1 bipods removed to install a XM148 40 mm grenade launcher mounted below the barrel. The XM148 40 mm grenade launchers were obtained from U.S. forces. For the L1A1, the lack of fully automatic fire resulted in the unofficial conversion of the L1A1 to full-auto capability by using lower receivers from the L2A1, which works by restricting trigger movement."

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, the son of a Darcsen engineer and a Belkan knight. You can't really say anything super special happened in your life. In fact, all you can remember is it being rather normal, compared to the cool stuff your friends do. Honestly, you're a bit jealous of them.

Maybe that's why you actually agreed to enroll in the Tier One program when you got the chance. You could do something with your life worth bragging about.

In fact, today was going to be the first day of class. You sort of wonder how it will go, but you've heard nothing but dark rumors and hearsay about the class, usually from students who didn't actually enroll or washed out. The ones who went in and actually managed to graduate were extremely tight lipped.

Glancing at your clock, you see you've still got a bit of time before class starts.

Well, ever since last year's term ended, you haven't actually seen your sister Lara that much. Apparently opting for flight school requires a lot of preparation before class actually starts. Then again, you're not surprised, since flight was still a relatively new and unproven form of combat. Sure, combat plans have been around for fifteen years already, but aside from a few aerial skirmishes, their hasn't been any serious war to test them yet.

You walk over to the pilot dorms, next to the academy airfield. Mentally recalling Lara's room number, you track down the door and give it a good knock. The door swings open to reveal a relatively short but energetic looking Darcsen girl.

"Luke? What are you doing here?" She blinks.

"What, can't a brother visit his favorite sister?" You laugh.

"I'm your ONLY sister." She pouts.

"Hey, I was just stopping by to see how you were doing. Never got a chance to see you when the term ended."

"Ah, well, my class schedule got moved up, so I have to leave right now! You mind talking while we walk?"

"Yeah, sure."

As you walk with Lara out of the dorms, you see a trio of warplanes swoop down to land on the airstrip, their propellers chopping through the air like angry insects. Actually, you've passed this airfield hundreds of times but you didn't actually know all that much about flying. Maybe Lara would know something?

"Hey, so what kind of planes are those?" You ask, nodding at the trio of planes that had just landed.

"Oh, those are Condors, Gallia's first mass produced fighter and basically a flying tank." Lara shrugs. "Apparently they didn't know how air combat was going to in the beginning, so the made the initial planes as tough as possible."

"Are you going to fly one of those?"

"Of course not!" Lara shakes her head. "You don't so much fly a Condor as you DRIVE it. It just doesn't click with me. I mean, Ann fell in love with it at the first sight, saying that it would make "a fine steed". But honestly I prefer something a bit faster."

"Ah." You nod. Well, the more you know. "So, why exactly did you want to fly in the first place?"

"Oh come on, Luke, why do you always ask the easiest questions?" Lara giggles. "I mean, who WOULDN'T want to fly? 'Carve your path in the skies.' It just sounds so... exciting!"

"I think I'm starting to understand." You nod.

"Yeah, well, I need to go now." Lara smiles. "And, uh, don't you have class today, too?"

You look at your watch and wince.

"HOLY CARP I'M GONNA BE LATE!" You blanch. You give your sister a quick hug before bolting off. Lara just smiles, shakes her head and waves goodbye as you leave.

Unfortunately, your classroom was pretty much on the opposite end of the campus from the airfield, so you had a LOT of running to do. However, you round a corner and notice too late you're about to crash into your best friend. You try to slide to a stop but it's far, far too late.

You see Lucina right in front of you as you try to slide to a stop. You're afraid that you won't be able to stop in time, but Lucina sidesteps impossibly fast, letting your momentum carry you past her before she reaches her arms out to grab to you keep you from falling on your face.

"If you were trying to ambush me, that was a terrible way to go about it." Lucina says.

"I didn't even mean that!" You breathe as the adrenaline begins to drain out of your system.

"Still, that was a very impressive sprint. You just need to work on your pacing or you'll just tire yourself out."

You sigh. Lucina was always a bit... weird. The combination of her less than normal upbringing and the fact that her abilities were so far above the average person's meant there was this huge barrier between her and others. Lucina had trouble comprehending how people couldn't keep up her, since she thought her abilities were completely normal. It was easy to see how a lot of the students here took her naivete the wrong way and avoided her.

Well, that's why you've stuck around to try and teach her the finer points of social graces. It was... kind of working. At least she had the sense to announce herself when she arrived, rather than giving everybody a scare when she seemingly just materializes right behind them.

"You know," Lucina says as you both make your way to class. "I always sort of figured you to be the pilot type. No offense, but we both know your physical ability scores weren't exactly the best."

"You know, if it were coming from anybody other than you, I'd probably agree." You sigh.

"But still, why'd you join Tier One?" Lucina asks.

"Well, isn't the point of joining the super hard program to see if you've got what it takes?" You say. "We're not all supersoldiers like you, Lucina. Some of us actually find training to be difficult."

"Impossible." Lucina shakes her head. "The training so far as been simple and rudimentary. Anybody could do it."

Once again, Lucina completely missing the point. However, you're too tired to really debate the matter with her.

"And also, I can't just leave my best friend hanging, right? I mean, what would you do without me?"

"Well... I wouldn't have to worry about having to keep rescuing you every five minutes." Lucina says without a hint of sarcasm or malice. Honestly....

"The point is, don't you like it better when I'm around?"

"...yeah, I do." Lucina nods.

"Well, it's settled then. We're gonna beat Tier One together!"

"Lucina..." Your eyes scan the classroom carefully. "Do you have a visual on the Twins?"

"That's a negative." Lucina responds.

That wasn't good. The Twins were notorious tricksters, and you had often found yourself in their sights more often than not, mostly because they've figured out that you were the most fun to tease. While largely harmless, you were a near-adult now, and you really didn't want to have to keep dealing with that sort of thing!

And like a ominous wraith, you see Falynn standing right in front of you. She doesn't really say anything. She normally doesn't, but she just gives you a rather dull look.

"Okay Falynn, what's your game?" You say, getting into a defensive stance, ready for anything she might pull.

"Silly Lucas, I'm just the distraction." She says quietly.

"Aw carp."

"Actually, I promised Lucy that I'd give her a weeks' worth of dessert rations." Charlotte grins.

"Traitor! Betrayer! Lucina! I trusted yooooouuuuu!!!"

"I'm sorry, it was too tempting." Lucina looks away.

"Come on, Falynn, like we agreed, you can go first." Charlotte says.

Oh no, oh no no no no...

Falynn calmly walks up to you. You both stare at each other for a few moments before she does what you dread the most. She reaches out your arm and starts ruffling your hair.

"So fluffy...." She says.

"I know, right?" Charlotte says, rubbing her cheek against the back of your head. "It's like he hasn't aged a day!"

Normally, getting assaulted and quite possibly molested in the middle of class was something that should have grabbed some attention, but considering these were the Stumfuhrer Twins, you see more looks of jealousy than horror. If only they knew, if only they knew...

Best of three is the single most common way of counting rolls among Quests that use them. This is because /tg/ dice are not truly random. Thus, best of three is a form of mercy to keep the dice from utterly fucking the players out of simple tasks, which they sometimes still do.
>>
>>26930020

I've only seen one quest where they use ANYTHING resembling best of three, and that was far harsher than what went on in this quest.

Even in '89...yea, I mean we NEARLY died over Tanana (sp?), but the lack of rolls really leaves it even more up to the QM's discretion. Whereas in this case Merc can "load the dice" to represent situations somewhat. If you don't like it I respect your opinion, but it sits just fine with me

To your credit, it seems like the element of surprise WAS on your side this time. You first head towards Charlotte in order to throw off her expectations. Charlotte squeaks and dashes away, but you're not concerned with her. You then make a sudden shift in direction, heading for Lucina instead. Her surprise gives you the critical seconds you need.

"TRAITORS MUST BE PUNISHED!" You bellow with knightly fury. You plant both your hands on Lucina's head. You're gonna need both hands for this!

And then commences the retaliatory hair ruffling. NOW those jealous looks around you turn to horror, as you are essentially assaulting one of the most dangerous people in the school.

However, after a couple of seconds, you back off, your bloodlust quenched. Like your hair, Lucina's was now a ruffled tangled mess, though her longer hair meant it would be much harder to comb out. Victory achieved.

"I suppose I deserved that." Lucina says a bit glumly.

"Really, Lucina? A week's worth of dessert? I would've thought I'd be worth more than that!"

"True. I should have asked for two or three weeks." Lucina sighs.

Honestly...

"Alright kids, settle down!" A loud but young voice pierces the room. The entire class turns to see a rather young man taking his position at the teacher's podium. That's odd, you would've thought Tarin or Ramirez or even Alek would be teaching this class.

"The name's Simo Petrovich, and I'll be your instructor for today." The man, well, barely a man. He couldn't be more than a couple years older than you. "Now, I know what you're thinking. 'Simo! Why isn't Tarin or Ramirez here, or your parents?' Well, I'm normally the teaching assistant, but the current teachers are a bit occupied right now, so you're stuck with me in the meantime."

The rest of your classmates look around curiously.

>It's time to choose your class! Now, a couple decades have passed, so obviously some roles have changed, but here they are!

I guess it also depends on what kind of armour we get. If it's practical armour, then we follow real life. If it's video game heavy armour, then we're freakin Juggernauts.

CHARLOTTE STURMFUHRER: SHOCKTROOPER
FALYNN STURMFUHRER: ENGINEER
LUCINA: SCOUT
LUCAS WILLIAMS: GUNNER
EDWIN HOHENZOLLERN: LANCER
MORGAN HATHCOCK: SNIPER

You notice there are two blank spaces at the bottom.

"Hey, um, Mr. Petrovich?"

"You can just call me Simo, man. Calling me Mr. Petrovich just makes me feel old."

"Okay, uh, Simo. What do these two blank spaces down here mean?"

"Oh, you can choose two more people to fill out your team. I don't really care who, as long as its someone from this class." Simo shrugs.

NAME: Marisa "Sparky" Nicolau
GENDER: Female
CLASS: Lancer
PERSONALITY: Mischievous and upbeat, and something of a kleptomaniac. Marisa is quick to act on her instincts and possesses a frankly disturbing love for large amounts of firepower, particularly explosions. Likes mushrooms.
BACKGROUND: Born from an Osean merchant father and a Yuktobanian mother. Marisa tended to be a bit of a wild child, being kicked out of a dozen schools for "borrowing" the property of her classmates (they can have everything back when she was dead!). Disappointed in his daughter, who he had hoped to follow him into the business, he decided to send to military school, where he hoped to have her problems smoother out. Instead, despite her inevitable disciplinary problems, she thrived, mostly because of her latent talent for anything involving absurd amounts of firepower. Deciding on a life as a soldier to keep access to her precious stock of highly powerful and unstable munitions, she transferred to Sturmfuhrer Academy, where she hopes to prove herself as one of the best in the art of making things blow up.

To add on to Mary-Kate's backstory:
Once she got in to the Academy, she managed to pass her classes by dint of the fact that she'd often work herself to absolute exhaustion. With this effort she managed to do well enough to choose Tier One specialization, her goal. She had wanted to join Tier One for 3 reasons: 1) She wanted to become even more like her heroes and figured the fastest way was by overcoming the challenge of Tier One; 2) She is DEATHLY afraid of flying. She isn't even particularly fond of high places, and; 3) She heard through the grapevine that many of the children of the Demons would be in Tier One as well. While she's sworn to herself to keep the fangirl-ism to a minimum, there will probably be times where she slips up.

Discussing with the rest of your team, you try to hammer out who you want to fill out your empty slots. Your first choice is Marisa "Sparky" Nicolau. Sure, she was a bit crazier, but no much crazier than the Twins or Lucina. Plus, you could always use some more heavy firepower. Second was John "Runaround" Gregor. He was a skilled, though somewhat reckless, driver. However, nobody could argue that he didn't have the experience handling vehicles in tight situations.

However, you're honestly not sure how you ended up with Mary-Kate Caulder, or how she even made it into Tier One at all. From what you understand, Mary-Kate was utterly mediocre as a soldier in every way. However, you do vaguely remember that when the faculty was deciding who was eligible to be Tier One, they would randomly pick one student out of the entire student body. Apparently, they believed "luck" was a real thing to be sought after.

And, as luck would have it, all the other teams had been filled, so Simo just defaulted her to yours since you had the most skilled teammates, meaning Alpha was the best equipped to keep an eye on her.

"Okay, and now it's time for some good old fashioned TEAMBUILDING EXERCISES." Simo says with all the enthusiasm as a dead tree.

And a few hours later, you and your "squad" are full kitted out and being shipped out to the Wilderness, basically the woods just outside of the Academy grounds.

Well, the first exercise was simple. The teams would be dropped at random points in the Wilderness. Every student was carrying a dog tag. The objective was to "kill" the most enemies and grab as many dog tags as you can. Friendlies can grab the dog tags of their "fallen" comrades to prevent them from being collected. This ensured that things would get up close and personal.

"So, uh... did we ever figure out who was going to be the squad lead?" Charlotte asks.

"Actually, we didn't." Falynn points out.

"Well, obviously it should be me." Edwin says with that smug smile of his.

"Oh, hell no." Charlotte shakes her head vigorously. "No way in hell is anybody going to follow your orders!"

Personally, you feel that Charlotte would make the beast leader out of all of you. Even though you had to admit Edwin was pretty damn smart he was... well... you didn't outright HATE him, but was certainly the closest person to come to that. His superior attitude generally didn't endear him very well among others. Though you're pretty sure he's somewhat of a nice guy underneath. Maybe. Hopefully.

However, your knightly blood starts to boil again, so you make the fateful decision.

"I'll take squad lead." You say.

The others look at you in surprise. Obviously they didn't really expect you to step up like this.

"Whoa, that's a surprise, Lucas." Charlotte grins. "Sure, I can support that."

Falynn nods in silent assent, along with Lucina. Edwin gives you a grudging look, but otherwise doesn't say anything.

"I guess it could work..." Morgan mutters.

Runaround, Sparky, and Mary-Kate, being relative newcomers, just go with the flow.

And just like that you are now suddenly Alpha Team Leader.

"Reaching drop zone in fifteen minutes." The driver announces. "Better get ready."

Well, that leaves just enough time to do something, but what?

"So, uh, Lucina, I saw you prodding me to be the leader. Any reason for that?" You ask.

"Well, it seemed like the natural choice." Lucina shrugs.

"Wait, what? What makes you think that?" You blink.

"Lucas, you're genuinely one of the nicest guys I know." Technically, you were the ONLY guy she really knew. "I just think that... you'd be the kind of person who'd do anything to make sure his squad was safe."

"Whoa, really?" You blink?

"Am I wrong to think that?"

"N-no, not at all. I just sort of thought Charlotte would be better suited for it. She IS the Headmaster's daughter, after all."

"True, but why can't change things up?" Lucina shrugs. "Besides, if it really doesn't work out we can always change it after."

"Um, thanks?"

"Okay people, last stop!" The driver announces as the truck comes to a halt. "Double check your gear because once I'm gone you're stuck with what you've got!"

"Aw no, I forgot to decide my loadout!" You grimace.

"I see our dear leader is off to a good start already." Edwin cracks a grin.

"Ah shut it."

As a Gunner, you have three choices of weapon to take.
>Automatic Rifle: Basically a slightly larger and heavier version of the basic Gallian assault rifle. It's the lightest of the weapons but also the weakest, and is magazine fed instead of belt fed.
>.30 caliber MG: A lot larger than the automatic rifle, the .30 cal can be carried around and fired, and is belt fed so it can fire for longer periods of time. However, it's much heavier.
>.50 caliber MG: The biggest and heaviest gun available on the squad support level. It's the most powerful of heavy machine guns, but is too heavy to fire on the move. Can only be used after being set up in a deployed position.

As the truck pulls away, you are left with yourself and your eight squadmates. The forest around you is eerily silent. Almost too silent.

"First things first, we should set up an ambush point." You say, looking around at the surrounding forest. "Lucina, I know you've been in the Wilderness before. You know of any good, defensible spots nearby?"

"I think so." Lucina nods. "This way."

With that, Lucina leads your little ragtag squad through the forest until you come up to what seems like the ruins of a tower. Age and weather has worn the ancient structure down to its base, but there's still a few walls and large blocks of stone to hide within.

"This is perfect." You nod. "This is what we'll do. Me, Falynn, Morgan, Edwin, and Sparky will hold position here. Lucina will go out and search for enemy teams. Charlotte, Mary-Kate, and Runaround will be the bait. Fire at the groups Lucina tags and try to lure them to our position. Slow and steady, and don't take any unnecessary risks. Got it?"

"Yes sir!" Everybody affirms.

"Hey, um, Lucas?" You turn to see Morgan step forward.

"Yeah, what is it, Morgan?" Obviously, you didn't really know a whole lot about him. Just that he was a nasty good shot. Morgan didn't seem to be the type who liked talking about himself either, and you've noticed he liked taking duties that distanced him from others.

"I was just wondering if I could go find my own ambush position? I mean, if I stay in the ruins, it be sort of a waste of range advantage, right?"

While Morgan's reasoning was sound, it seemed more like he was trying to find a excuse to be alone.

"Don't worry, I know how it works." Morgan grins slightly.

The next few minutes go by rather silently. You set up your gun to overlook the prepared killzone, while Falynn boobytraps most of the obvious approaches with paint mines. Sparky and Edwin make sure their lances are properly loaded and ready to fire.

"Lucas, it's Lucina. I've got something." Your radio buzzes.

"What have you got?" You ask.

"I see one... no... two squads approaching. If we're lucky they'll engage each other, or we can try luring one or both groups to us."

Well, you could wait and see if both groups started attacking each other, which would save you some trouble. However, the point of this exercise to pick up tags, and letting two squads wipe each other meant you would effectively be gaining nothing. On the other hand, you don't want to risk pulling in more than you could chew.

Wait. Why can't we let them kill each other and then just finish them off and take all of the tags? Do they not count if we're not the ones who kill them?
>>
>>26932750
>Other
Let the two groups engage, but be ready to jump in, finish off the last ones standing, and take all the tags.
>>

>Wait and see what happens.

If they engage each other we can lure the victors towards our killzone and take all the dog tags for ourselves. All's fair.

Wait, let them wipe each other out, then snag the tags
go for objective attainment, not glory in battle

"Wait up, Lucina. Wait and see what happens." You say.

"Roger that."

Another few uncomfortably silent minutes pass by until the radio buzzes again.

"Lucas, I've got some pretty bad news. It looks like they're working together." Lucina announces.

"What? Are you sure?"

"Well, they're not shooting at each other, that's for sure."

"What's going on here..." You mutter to yourself.

"Lucina, this is really important." You ask. "Did both teams already know each other was there?"

"No... they were rather surprised when they ran into each other. But they didn't fire right away. Now that you point it out it IS rather odd..."

Things weren't adding up here. Well, this seemed like a good idea to ask the resident know it all.

"Hey! Edwin!"

"What do you want?" Edwin sighs. "Hopefully something worth wasting my precious time."

"Yeah, well, there's this odd thing going on. Lucina spotted two teams that ran into each other by surprise, but they didn't fire at each other right away, and now they're actively cooperating. What's your take on it?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Edwin shakes his head. "Apparently the teams are colluding, and based on your story, they were doing it the moment we left the Academy."

"But, the teams wouldn't have any reason to work together form alliances beforehand because placement is randomized, plus the need to collect the tags...."

"Lucas, the answer is staring you in the face." Edwin sighs like a disappointed parent. "If I'm right, and I usually am, this whole 'teambuilding' exercise has been rigged from the very beginning. It's not a free for all. All the teams are gunning for US."

Well, cracker jacks.

It's good to see this happening. Loved the first, and as long as this ain't a rehash, well, I'm gonna love it all just the same.

I do hope for some more interaction between squaddies. The squad from VMQ1 was likable as hell, but there were a few who ended up getting left behind.

Jeez, did Heloise run an uptight household? The day this kid drops an f-bomb will be a momentous one indeed.

Well, we seem to be making up for lost time by having our first two characters picked up be the progeny of said left behind squadmates.

That day already happened. It was too momentous.

It is also why he's scard as hell of sweet things.

All in favor of violent aversion to sweet stuff due to Heloise trying to kill us with sugar poisoning since the day we were born?

If Heloise has been feeding this kid sugar since the day he was weaned, why hasn't he developed the diabeetus yet?

Because he learned to run like hell.
