Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a student in the Sturmfuhrer Academy and currently enrolled in its elite TIER ONE Program. You've already got your little squad together and ready, but you've run into a bit of a problem. This "teambuilding" exercise you're currently on is less "teambuilding" and more "oh god everybody is out to get you". More specifically, your teachers probably found it amusing to make everybody gang up on what was presumably the most powerful team. Yours.

Thankfully, you not only succeeded, but you soundly trounced the other teams thanks to a combination skill, guts and sheer dumb luck. However, one thing you did find out was that your squad sniper, Morgan, seems to be hiding something from you...

(cont)
>>
>>26967815
Normally, when you're hung up about something, such as one of your friends possibly lying to you, you're kept up all night due to the anxiety. However, thanks to Simo's little "teambuilding" exercise, you're utterly exhausted by the time you get back to your dorm and you just flop down onto your bed and fall asleep.

Before your realize it, it's already morning. Yawning, you push yourself off from your bed and realize you're still covered in the dirt and sweat from yesterday and quickly take a shower. You get the feeling that showers are something you will be sorely missing in the future, but you shake it out and replace it with what Tier One has in store for you.

After finishing cleaning yourself up and getting dressed, you check your watch and see that you've got at least a good hour before class starts. Perhaps you can...

Has naval and submarine technology been advancing at the same pace as aircraft? Cause if the Vergletung was the equivalent of a WW1 submarine that had to aim torpedoes by pointing the entire ship at the target we could have some crazy stuff going on in the oceans. Gallia doesn't have much of a navy from what we saw in VMQ1 but they did end the war with a working submarine so the tech should be keeping pace.

After you did the Albion invasion arc I did a lot of research into sub warfare out of curiosity. WW2 sub tech was way more advanced than I ever imagined. You could have electric torpedoes (no bubble trail!) that used gyroscopic steering to turn after being fired (so your sub didn't have to be pointed at the enemy), had depth keeping sensors to keep them running at a specific depth underwater or on the surface. With magnetic fuses to detonate them under a ships spine to crack it in half under it's own weight. And if they missed the target they could go into pre-programmed loops and zig zags in an effort to hit other ships in a convoy. Hell you even had aerial torpedoes like the American Mk 13 that could be dropped from an altitude of 732m high at 760 km/h! (2,400 feet at 470 mph) Or acoustic torpedoes that homed in on propeller noise and crippled ships.
>>
>Track down Morgan
>Also keep an eye out for the twins, we still owe them some ruffles
>>
>>26968191
now take that and multiply it by Qyburn and we've probably got shit like torpedoes that burrow into hulls before imploding or something equally ridiculous
>>
>>26968191
How did they do that without transistor tech? Computers were still in their infancy then.

Well, you think you could hold off on breakfast for now. Considering you were raised on Mom's cooking, you could probably afford to skip a meal or two. No, you've got some more important things to do, like getting to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Morgan.

Fortunately for you, room assignments were publicly available, in case students needed to track each other down. A quick visit to the dorm manager (who was thankfully awake at this hour) and you manage to pull Morgan's room number.

Armed with this knowledge, you home in on Morgan's room. However, you're already wondering how you're going to approach this.

It was almost all mechanical, the things we do nowadays with what we think og as basic electronic circuits were done using a metric shitton of gears, levers and other fiddly bits like vaccum tubes. I can't even begin to comprehend how it worked but they did some amazing things with it.

The British version of the Bofors AA gun almost everyone used in WW2 had a computer that would track airborn targets and show the gunners how far they had to lead it based on how fast and high it was flying. The Norden bombsight is another british example.

Early on in the war the tailgunners for bombers like the B-25 and B-17 were literally just door gunners. You had an opening in the side of the aircraft with a pintle mounted machine gun and nothing else. It was cold as shit because a lot of them didn't even have glass. But later on they had some amazingly advanced equipment. You could have gunners on swivel chairs sitting inside the aircraft with a holographic gunsights, and the guns on the outside were mounted in powered turrets that would automatically track whatever the gunner was aiming at. The P61 Black Widow had a dorsal turret like that and some later versions of the A20 Havoc did too.
>>
We really should go to Elizabeth to find out Morgans backstory, saying that we need to know our member's experiences. She probably went through and cross examined everyone's story.
>>
>>26968558
You give the door a knock, but there's apparently no answer. So now you're just left standing in the hall rather awkwardly. At this hour, you can only think of two or three things. Either Morgan had already left his room, is still asleep, or just doesn't like answering his door.

Well, now you've got to figure out how to deal with this minor setback.

However, Morgan is strangely silent and you turn and see his normally pale face is glowing beet red now, as if the act of just touching his hand made him feel extremely embarrassed.

Well, no time to worry, you've got pancakes to eat!

However, you do catch a lot of weird stares as you lead Morgan out of the dorms. You're not quite sure what the big deal is, but you see a lot of the female students pointing in your direction with lots of hushed whispers and squealing.

Oh right, Morgan was pretty popular with the girls, for some reason. You sort of remembered that.

Fortunately, thanks to the school's layout, the cafeteria is only a short walk away from the dorms. Since you're basically the head chef's son, you've got the unofficial power to cut through line whenever you wanted. It wasn't exactly something you liked to use or abuse that often, but you feel that today you could make an exception. You bypass the line and slide your way to the front, where you can see your mom working the line.

"Oh, good morning, Lucas!" Your mom beams when she sees you approach. "Just in time for the pancakes, I see!"

"Yeah, can I get two plates, please? I brought a friend." You say.

"Of course!"

"And can you PLEASE let us handle the syrup?"

"That's not fun! You never put enough on!" Your mom pouts. Seriously, and YOU'RE supposed to be the kid, here.

"Thanks, Mom!" You say quickly, grabbing both plates and stepping out of the line."

You then...

>Should have clarified that the 2 friends are in addition to Morgan. Consensus on that seems to be Lucina and Sparky, anyways.

As your eyes scan the mess hall, they lock on to Lucina, who's sitting in her usual table off in the corner with a good line of sight on the door. You know, harder to ambush that location and everything. She was weird like that. You and Morgan weave your way through the tables, and you see that Lucina isn't alone. Sparky is there as well, apparently recounting some exciting story to your best friend.

"...and that's how I got away with turning a four story into a three story one." Sparky grins with a mouthful of pancake. "So, the moral of the story is: if at first you don't succeed, use more high explosive."

"Interesting." Lucina nods. "You certainly know your way around explosives."

"Aw, it's nothing compared to what my Uncle Vinnie can do!"

"Ladies." You say as you sit down, announcing your presence.

"Good morning, Lucas." Lucina nods to you and see's Morgan. "Good morning to you, too."

"M-morning." Morgan mumbles.

"Yo." Sparky waves.

>>
>>26971300
Well, at that point, your breakfast kind of evolves into a storytelling game as everybody tries to one up each other.

Sparky recounts a story of how she went out fishing with her Uncle Vinnie once. However, it wasn't just regular river or lake fishing, but deep water fishing, for sharks, because of course it had to be sharks. Anyways, at one point, they're ambushed by pirates, who demand that they hand over all their supplies and valuables. Normally, when caught off guard on the seas by pirates, you tended to do whatever they demanded. However, this was Uncle Vinnie involved here. Vinnie feigned surrender, and agreed to give over several sacks of potatoes to the pirates.

Except the sacks were filled with hand grenades. Because, of course you'd stow hand grenades in potato sacks. Either way, one pulled pin and one sack toss later, and Sparky and Uncle Vinnie's pirate problem was swiftly solved.

Lucina then talks about how her parents dropped her off in the middle of the forest during winter with nothing but the clothes on her back and a hatchet. When her parents came back to check on her two days later, she had already added two wolf and one bear pelt to her clothing collection because it was a tad too cold to her liking.

Well, when your turn comes up, you decide to tell the story about Alek and Elsa, in an effort to try and cheer Morgan up. After all, Alek made a pretty poor showing of himself early on in the Demons up until the point he Elsa got together and-

"P-PERVERT!" Morgan yells before standing up and storming out.

"W-was it something I said?" You blink.

Both Lucina and Sparky shrug.

"I was only trying to cheer her up-"

"Don't worry about it, I didn't find anything wrong with it." Sparky says. "Maybe Morgan's just way more prudish than we thought."

"Yeah..." You then glance at your watch and realize that it's almost time for class.

>Go after Morgan.

Normally I'd be kicking myself for making a slip like that, but it was at this point Lucas would figure it out, anyways.

"Awww nuts." You get up from your seat, shoveling the last pancake into your mouth. "You two go on ahead. I'll take care of this."

"Well, it IS partly your fault..." Lucina points out.

You're in too much of a rush to reply, and you head off after Morgan, who is retreating to the back of the mess hall, where the bathrooms are located. You manage to catch up fast enough that you see Morgan flee into the girls' bathroom.

You stop for a moment and wonder why Morgan would go in there, until it finally clicks. All the little pieces, all those little oddities that didn't seem so strange when seen alone... The shyness, that effeminate appearance, that reluctance to get close to anyone...

Morgan was a girl.

Your mind spins at the revelation. How could something like this happen? Normally students were screened very carefully to make sure there wouldn't be any issues, and you were pretty damn sure Jager or Elizabeth would be thorough enough to see through something like this.... unless they were in on it too.

Frowning that this revelation was creating more questions than answers, you wonder what to do.

Well that's what your going to have to find now, don't you?

>>26972562 (You)
You decide to give Morgan the alone time she needs. Honestly, you don't feel all that comfortable confronting her about this either, especially since you've just now put the pieces together. Plus, breaking into the girls' bathroom was a huge no no. You dreaded what would happen if any of the other girls, or heaven forbid, Mom, would do to you if they found out.

"Hey, Morgan, I'm really sorry about what I said. Class is starting soon, so, if you want to talk later, you know where to find me, all right?"

There's no answer except for a few sniffles. You sigh and make the long trek back to class. You wonder if you should tell the others about your suspicions or not. You have to remind yourself that though there's a lot of strong indicators, you don't have concrete proof about Morgan's gender yet.

You decide to keep this information to yourself for the time being. There was nothing worse than jumping the gun, especially when it came to somebody's private life and secrets. You file into the classroom and take a seat next to the rest of your squad. Lucina and Sparky look at you, wondering what happened, but you just shrug in response.

As the minutes pass by, you wait to see if Morgan comes, but she never arrives in class. You can see Simo obviously concerned, but he otherwise stays silent.

Then, you see Tarin and Ramirez enter the room. The two most feared instructors take their places at the front of the classroom, while Simo steps off to the side.

The rest of the class involves Tarin and Ramirez basically lecturing and tearing the class apart on what they did right, but mostly what they did wrong during the exercise. For example, Baker and Charlie, which were the two groups that Lucina had engaged, made the critical mistake of splitting up their group when they had no reliable means of communication, meaning Lucina could pick them apart at will. Delta tunnel visioned when they pinpointed Morgan's position, and didn't scout their flanks properly before making a push. Not to mention they were too clumped so a good frag lance or MG burst would wipe most of them out. Echo and Foxtrot had a good idea going by trying to soften up your fortified position with lances and then attacking from multiple directions simultaneously, but they failed to set up a base of fire to keep defenders suppressed while they pushed forward.

(cont)
>>
>>26973571
However, despite winning, Alpha team wasn't immune from criticism either. Sending your only scout off on a distraction run meant you effectively blinded yourself and restricted your options of movement. Also, they pointed out you were a bit too aggressive with your weapon, saying that shocktroopers were supposed to lead the charge while gunners provided long range support. If Delta had been more organized in their push things could have gone very differently.

All in all, Tarin and Ramirez concluded that they were NOT going to go easy this year and they were going to work all of your asses to the bone. You sort of had the suspicion that this was what they were going to do anyways, regardless of how perfectly you performed.

Thankfully, Tarin and Ramirez let the class off early, promising that the "real thing" was going to start tomorrow. You've got quite a bit of free time so...

Your first instinct is to head straight back to the bathroom Morgan retreated to, but you figure that she's probably moved out of there by now so you make a beeline for Morgan's dorm room instead. You have to mentally remind yourself that she's in the BOYS' dorm, the same on you live in.

As you go up the stairs to her floor, you actually rather miraculously bump into her as she makes her way down the stairs.

"O-oh, hi there." Morgan mumbles. "I-I was actually going to go looking for you..."

"Funny, I was going to do the same." You reply.

You both stand there silently and somewhat awkwardly until Morgan finally breaks the silence.

"Lucas.. I'm.. .I'm actually a girl." Morgan sighs.

"Um, yeah, I kind of figured that when you ran off into the girls' bathroom." You respond.

"Wait, I ran into..." Morgan gasps and facepalms. "Agh, I'm so stupid!"

You can't help but laugh a bit. You've never seen Morgan so talkative or flustered like this before, considering she's tried to avoid showing off too much of herself. Honestly, she looks kinda cute like this.

I think it's pretty clear that obfuscating her gender is necessary because if she was outed as a girl she would be suspected of being a valkyria. What with the hair and all.

Which would be hilarious if it's true because that would mean she might be like Naoto and end up with the biggest bust of the female cast but no one knows because of the lengths she goes to hide it.

"Morgan, you don't have to tell me or anybody else. But just so you know, I consider you a friend, so I've got your back no matter what. You can trust me with anything."

"Thanks." She nods.

"Actually, why'd you admit it to me, anyways?" You ask.

"Well..." Morgan's eyes shift to the side. "I just couldn't take the pressure any more. I had to tell SOMEBODY, and Simo and the teacher's don't count."

"Whoa, wait, you mean all the teachers know too?" You blink.

"Well yeah, the senior ones, anyways." Morgan nods. "You really didn't think I'd be able to get in otherwise?"

"Makes sense." You concede.

"But can you please not tell anybody else about this? I'm already risking a lot telling you all this. Not even the teachers can know you know!"

"Don't worry, Morgan, your secret is safe with me." You assure her. "Knight's honor."

"Thanks." Morgan gives you a warm smile. "Just, be careful how you act around me, okay? If you treat me like a girl in public people might get the wrong idea..."

"Um, okay." You say, not quite sure what she was getting at.

"Anyways, I gotta go. I'll see you at class tomorrow."

"Yeah, see you then." You say and Morgan rushes down the stairs and out the door.

You decide to go and check up on Lara. Since you got let out early, you figure she's still in flight training and you make your way over to the airfield. Overhead, you see a number of planes with bent wings circling around in the air. On the airfield itself, on a grassy knoll, you can see several dozen students, Lara included, listening to an instructor's lecture as she points to the planes circling around in the sky.

It's actually surprisingly easy to sneak into the lecture, considering everybody's heads are looking straight up to keep track of the planes circling lazily in the air. However, you see more than few stares focused on the instructor rather than the planes, and you can understand why. She was a pretty attractive Darcsen, after all.

"So, in summary," The instructor says, "The Condor is primarily a close air support craft, meant to eliminate ground targets and support allied troops. The Eagle and the Falcon are our primary air superiority fighters. The Eagle is dependable and well established, but the Falcon is our newest top of the line fighter, though untested. I'll expect you all to turn in your flight preferences tomorrow morning, and we'll take it from there. Dismissed."

With that, the flight students begin to disperse, and from what you can overhear, they're mainly discussing what plane they want to fly.

"Luke? What are you doing here?" Lara asks, a bit confused.

"Oh, well, our class got let out early and I just wanted to stop by to see how my favorite sister was doing!" You grin.

"Anyways, I was sort of wondering what plane you were thinking of flying." You continue as you glance at the large assortment of various planes both in the air and on the ground.

"I'm sort of thinking about the Falcon. If what Edge says is true, then it's going to be the fastest and most maneuverable plane in Gallia!"

"Edge?" You ask.

"Oh, that's Instructor Kei's callsign. Kinda like a nickname, but for pilots." Lara grins. "You either have to do something really special, or be an ace to earn one!"

"I assume aces are something special."

"Uh huh!" Lara nods happily. "If you get five kills, then you're an ace! Edge is actually already a double ace! Ten kills!"

"That's cool." You nod. It was nice to see Lara being so passionate about something. It almost made you regret choosing Tier One over flight training. Almost.

"Yeah, well, I'm going to be the best ace out there! Even better than Edge!" Lara declares.

"You haven't even gotten in a plane yet and you're already making some wild claims!" You laugh. "When you do make ace, I'll make sure to be there to see it!"

"Thanks, Luke!" Lara gives you a big, sisterly hug. "I'll keep an eye out for you too while I'm up there!"

With that, you both make your mutual farewells. You've both got big days tomorrow, after all.

At this point, it's starting to get dark. As you make your way back to the dorms you catch sight of Lucina lying on the soft green grass that covered the commons.

"You know, Lucina, we've got beds for that." You grin as you stand over your best friend.

"It's not the same." Lucina says, her eyes closed as the evening breeze blows past. "When you spend a lot of time outdoors, you get more used to sleeping on the ground than anywhere else."

"Huh, I guess you got a point there." You nod.

"Come on, you should give it a try, too!" Lucina pats the patch of grass next to her.

"Sure, why not." You flop down on the grass next to Lucina. She's right. It does feel pretty nice. Definitely different from any bed you've slept in.

It also gives you a good view of the night sky. Out here, near the coast and far from the big cities like Fouzen and Randgriz, you've actually got a very good view of the stars. Countless little pinpricks of light twinkle in the sky.

"Lucas, can I ask you a question?" Lucina speaks up, turning her head to face you.

"Yeah, go ahead."

"Are you scared?"

"Huh?"

"About Tier One. There's no way you can't know. Once we graduate, you'll be expected to take the hardest and most dangerous missions ever, each one with a good chance you won't be coming back from it, and in most cases nobody would ever know. Are... are you really okay with that?"

"Are you scared, then?" You ask, still looking up at the sky.

Lucina is silent for a long time. You're not quite sure if it's because she thinks its a stupid question, or if she just doesn't know how to answer it. Hell, you don't even know if she has a concept of fear.

"Yeah, I am." Lucina finally says, much to your surprise."I just... don't like the idea of letting somebody down. I mean, my parents' personal training is one thing. Usually it's just me on my own. But here... I have to work with others. What if I can't keep up or pull my weight in the squad?"

Now, this was really ironic, considering it was EVERYBODY ELSE worrying about having to keep up with Lucina, but you do get the point she's trying to make. You know Lucina and her parents have always tended to be lone wolves who worked on their own, and weren't exactly the most ideal team players.

"Well, that's why I'm here, right? Somebody's gotta keep an eye on you." You say reassuringly.

"Yeah, you're right." Lucina nods, smiling.

Then you hear some shuffling and the rustling of grass. Before you know it, Lucina has closed the distance between you and her. She wraps her arms around yours and you can feel something very warm and very soft...

"Hey Lucina, don't you think you're getting a bit too close here?" You ask nervously.

"What are you talking about?" Lucina asks curiously. "You should know that even during the summer, the nights can still get fairly cold up here. This way we can keep each other warm."

Well, you're glad that it's dark, because if anybody saw you two out here like this, they'd start getting the wrong impression.

"Okay, I guess we can stay like this for a bit longer..." You mumble. However, you had to admit, it WAS a nice feeling. You're about to comment on it but the cool night breeze carries you away.
