Woooo, it's that time of the week again! Time for a side chapter. Gonna try to keep this one short, but we'll see how it goes!

Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LARA WILLIAMS, a pilot trainee in the Sturmfuhrer Academy's flight training program. You're already a few weeks into your training, to the point where Edge and the other flight instructors feel that you're ready to start flying aircraft on you own!

You have honestly never been more excited in your life.

You are so excited, in fact, you actually get up a couple hours earlier than you usually do, just so you can be sure you're totally ready and on time. After a quick shower, you quietly exit your room so as not to disturb your dorm mates, and exit the building. By this point, the early birds are starting to get up.

Actually, you wonder if you can catch Lucas or your other friends in Tier One. You've still got ample time left. Then again, you do remember that you tend to get carried away, so maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea...

Hmmm, breakfast would be good. Like Mom always said, it was the most important meal of the day!

The mess hall fairly empty, which is to be expected at this hour. Mostly it was just the early birds, some of the faculty, and the advanced class students that would be up this early. Fortunately, this mean that the line was obscenely short, so you wouldn't have to wait too long for food. Plus you'd get it while it was still fresh!

"Lara! Sweetie!" You mom cooes as you reach her section of the line. "How have you been doing?"

"I'm doing great, Mom. We're going to be doing our first solo flights today!" You beam.

"That's wonderful!" Mom smiles. "This calls for a special treat!"

"Oh no, Mom, I don't want everybody getting jealous of me again-"

"Don't be silly! Special girls should get special treats!" Your mom starts humming as she starts whipping up some of her world famous Osean Toast. You could just FEEL the jealous eyes of the other students drilling into your back.

"So how's Lucas been doing?" You mom continues as she does her delicious work. "With the hours Tarin and Ramirez set up for him, he hardly manages to come in when I'm on duty! I just get so worried about him!"

"Mom, Luke can handle himself." You sigh. "And he can't, I'm sure Lucina can bail him out like she always does."

"Hmmmmmm, I guess." Mom pouts. Seriously, and you were supposed to be the kid here! "Anyways, here you go!"

Mom then hands you the steaming hot plate of Osean Toast. You don't want to admit it but your mouth is watering at the sight. It's almost worth having half the mess hall present hating you over it.

"Good luck and have fun in class!" Mom calls out as you exit the line.

You wave your goodbye to her and then turn to scan the mess hall proper. You see some of your classmates have beaten you here, already wolfing down their plates.

And... you see Charlotte and Falynn at another table. You haven't seen them in forever, either, now that you think about it. Plus, maybe Lucas might show up...?

The Legend of Shaved Dog's Ass is a song about how a new guy to a squadron can become the greatest wingman ever. It was written and performed by Chris "Snooze" Kurek and Rob "Trip" Raymond, two actual USAF fighter pilots (Viper jockeys, specifically).

I don't think so, not yet. Callsigns are earned after you actually get a billet. They're usually insulting. However, pilot's code rules that if a girl asks what a buddy's callsign is in a bar, and it's embarrassing, you are to make up a cool one for them on the spot.

FUCK THE STRIKE FORCE MISSIONS! I just fucking know that these shitty-ass missions, where I'm supposed to be commanding guys who literally can't hit a man five feet in front of him against fucking aimbotting assholes are going to fuck me out of a good ending. I'm playing on Veteran and literally every other mission is piss easy, but these fucking things are gonna fuck me out of getting all the endings, I just know it. I literally turned the fucking game off after FOB Specter and haven't picked it back up yet because I am STILL pissed at that bullshit. Polite sage for largely off-topic bitching about vidya.

"Char! Fal! It's been forever!" You say as you slide into a seat next to the Sturmfuhrer Twins. "How have things been going?"

"Man, you should've joined Tier One with us!" Charlotte says, half a sausage still hanging out of her mouth. "We do all the coolest stuff!"

"Charlotte. Chew and swallow." Falynn interjects.

"Yeah yeah, just a second." Charlotte says as she gobbles down what's left of the sausage. "Anyways, we just did our first, honest to god paradrop yesterday! It was soooooooo awesome!"

"I still don't get why we'd ever need to jump out of perfectly good plane." Falynn frowns.

"Because it's something Dad would totally do."

"...you have a point."

"I'm sort of with Fal here." You laugh nervously. "If we have to use a parachute, that means something's gone horribly wrong."

"And that's why pilots will always be pussies in my eyes." Charlotte nods. "No offense, Lara."

"No no, I understand." You sigh. You guess this was what the traditional rivalry between pilots and "groundpounders" was like. "Anyways, it's good to see you're both still okay. I heard a lot of people get hurt... or even killed... during the paradrops."

"It is one of the statistically highest methods of getting injured in the Academy." Falynn affirms.

"Shush, Falynn, you're not helping." Charlotte elbows her twin sister slightly.

"Yeah, that sounds like him all right." You laugh.

"And uh, don't tell him I told you that."

"Okay, okay, I promise!" You snicker. You then glance at the clock and gasp. "Gaaaaah, it's almost class!"

Of course you got carried away again. You jam the toast in your mouth pick up your bag and wave your goodbyes to the Twins before bolting out the door.

It's a really cool idea, but the execution is just terrible. Honestly, a better execution would be to have you sitting there, watching the helmet cams, and just have the player making calls. Make you actually sit back and be a handler for another team, don't do a really badly executed pseudo-RTS. Because THAT would have been cool.

Fortunately, you don't run into any obstacles you can't dodge or avoid as you sprint to class. You manage to get to class with enough time to spare to finish off Mom's Osean toast before going inside.

As expected, most of your class is already present. They're already all divided up into individual flights of four, which are the groups that would be flying together for the duration of training. You make your way to where your flight, Red Flight, is assigned to sit.

"Hey guys!" You say happily as you take your seat. It looks like your three wingmates were all here.

There was Wendell "Wedge" Antilles, your flight lead. He was a pretty cool, laid back sort of guy, but a pretty deadly pilot.

Bill "Biggs" Griggs, who was Wedge's wingman. He was sort of the straight and narrow guy of the flight, and basically inseparable from Wedge. You could totally see them being a couple...

NO! FOCUS, LARA!

Last but not least was Fleur Blanc. She had a bit of an attitude but her situational awareness was unparalleled.

"Hey, I thought you of all people would be here first!" Wedge admonishes you as you take your seat.

"Sorry, I got a bit distracted." You sigh. "Did Edge start yet?"

"Nah, you're just in time."

As if on cue, your instructor Edge takes her spot at the head of the class.

"Good morning, class, we've got a big day today!" Edge grins as she scans the classroom. "Your first solo flight, as well as your first combat exercise!"

Everybody starts mumbling. A combat exercise this early?

"Okay, here are the assignments!" Edge announces loudly. "Today we'll be having Red, Blue, and Gold Flights flying. This exercise is going to be a simple Interception mission, with Gold Flight doing ground attack. Red Flight, since you've got the highest score right now, you get to pick your role."

So, I have to play an already piss-easy game on a lower difficulty, just so I don't get fucked by the one mission type being literally BROKEN. "We're going to do intercept." Wedge says. You and the rest of your flight nods, while Blue Flight groans. You are also acutely aware of the daggers Gold Flight is glaring at Blue right now as well.

"Okay, you've got your assignments. Report to your planes!" Edge says.

You all march out to the airfield to your planes, which are all old trainers. You pick one of the assigned Falcons and brush your hand along its side. They wouldn't be the planes you would eventually fly into combat, but for now it was your plane and you would treat it with the respect it deserves.

You drop into the cockpit and start going through the motions, just like in the mockups and in the trainer planes. You check all the gauges and instruments and confirm they're working. Satisfied, you activate the engine, and it roars to life, causing the whole plane to shudder and jolt as it coughs to life. Outside, you see one of the ground crew giving you an all clear and motioning for your plane to taxi to the runway.

Within minutes, you and the rest of Red Flight are up in the air. Since it's your first solo flight, you all fly a bit conservatively, going relatively low and slow as you get a feel for things. It was absolutely terrifying, flying without assistance or Edge's guiding hand, but it was also exciting and liberating at the same time. You were flying on your own!

"Heh, this is actually pretty cool without Edge nagging us all the time!" Wedge laughs.

"Wedge, if you're going to talk behind your commander's back, don't do it on an open channel." Edge says as her black Falcon zooms over your flight. "See those three smoke markers? Those are targets Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. Keep Gold flight from knocking out all three targets and you win!"

"Okay, so how are we going to do this?" Biggs asks.

Isara Mark 4 "Falcon" Air Superiority Fighter

The latest in Gallian flight engineering, the Falcon is widely considered the pinnacle of current generation aircraft development. Unlike its earlier cousins the Eagle and the Condor, the Falcon follows a new tactical doctrine favoring light, fast planes over slower, heavily armed ones. As a result, the Falcon trades a large portion of armor for its superior speed and mobility. Don't be fooled, though. The Falcon still has a respectable amount of armor compared to its foreign equivalents, and incorporates most of the same safety systems present in the Condor and Eagle.

However, despite its lesser protection, the Falcon is just as well armed as the Eagle, sporting six .50 caliber machine guns as well as hardpoints for bombs and lances, giving the Falcon limited strike capability.

Despite its advanced nature, there are already rumors that the Falcon is already obsolete, if the rumors of a completely brand new form of aircraft propulsion are true...

Isara Mark 2 "Condor" Strike Fighter

The very first combat proven, mass production aircraft, the Condor is one of the oldest and most respectable planes still flying the skies.

Originally, early aircraft designers were unsure of how aircraft battles would be handled, so they fell back on what was familiar to them and tried to design aircraft as closely to tanks as possible. As a result, the Condor is ridiculously well armored, with numerous failsafe and redundant safety systems built into as well. Not to mention, its large flat wings and powerful engine give it an absurd amount of lift, letting it carry large payloads and fly at speeds that would cause most other craft to stall.

Its armament is rather fearsome, sporting 4 20mm cannons, as well as 7 hardpoints that can fit a variety of heavy ordnance.

Though its glory days as a dogfighter are long past, the Condor still enjoys playing the role of close air support, often providing quick and overwhelming firepower for those ground troops that ask for it. As a result, the Condor is a welcome sight for friendly troops and dreadful omen for enemies.

Isara Mark 3 "Eagle" Air Superiority Fighter

Gallia's current standard warplane, the Eagle was the natural evolution of the Condor as it was streamlined into a leaner, faster machine. Though it lacks the toughness and punch of the Condor, and the speed and nimbleness of the Falcon, the Eagle rests comfortably in between, making it a very safe choice for inexperienced pilots or those lacking the fortitude to handle a Falcon.

It is armed with six .50 caliber machine guns, with the capability of mounting bombs and lances for ground attack.

And the Blues never even see you coming. The only indication of your presence is a storm of paint rounds as they splatter all over the tops of the Blue Falcons.

"Blue Three and Blue Four eliminated." You hear Edge announce over the global frequency. With that, the two "dead" Blue Falcons break off and fly home.

That now only leaves the two Condors to deal with. Now, the problem was that Condors were tough as hell, and they could turn on a dime, meaning against a good Condor pilot, you'd only have scant seconds to get a Condor in your sights before it either makes a sharp turn or brakes to force an overshoot.

However, a good enough Falcon pilot would be able to hang right behind a Condor and just pump it full of lead before it has a chance to maneuver.

OR, and Edge taught you this trick herself, every plane, no matter where it was built, has the same common flaw. Similar to tanks, the radiators for the ragnite engines had to be left unarmored in order to dissipate heat. It was the one weak spot in any fighter, including Condors. The only trick was that the radiators were located on the sides of the front fuselage, meaning they could only be hit by a well aimed deflection shot.

You briefly consider joining in on the fray, but you remember that you've already spent most of your plane's energy in the aborted climb. Even if you wanted to you wouldn't be able to catch up to Wedge and Biggs until the fight was over.

As far as you know, Gold is probably bearing down on Bravo right now.

You consider climbing so you can get some altitude to ambush them from, but it was going to take some time to get to the required height. Or you could just speed up now and intercept them at low altitude. But then you'd be giving up any chance on taking them by surprise.

You and Fleur hit the throttle and you're pushed back in your seat as the Falcon builds up speed.

Sure enough, you see two shapes in the distances, barely a a couple thousand feet from the ground making a beeline straight for Bravo. However, they see you both approaching at high speed. One of the Condors breaks off and heads straight for Alpha, while second one continues its run to Bravo. Now you know they're desperate, splitting their forces up like in the mad gamble they'd be able to simultaneously take out the last two targets. Well, you've got options, now that you don't have to fear any sort of ambush. If Wedge and Biggs couldn't shoot down the remaining Blues, they'd at least keep them busy long enough.

Your shots rake across the Condor, but don't seem to have much effect. You scowl as you try to keep the Condor in your sights, but the pilot keeps going, as if he's determined to take down his target if it's the last thing he does.

"Gold Four eliminated!" Edge announces.

"Okay, I'm coming in to assist!" You hear Fleur say. "I'll be there in twenty seconds!"

Twenty seconds and the Condor will be right on top of Alpha. Even though Bravo was safe, you really didn't want to lose more targets than you had to.

Everyone dropping off Merc's wild ride, apparently.

I never thought that taking a break to do a few minutes of writing would lead to this.

You keep pounding away at the Condor with your machine guns, but it just keeps on going. However, even if the plane was tough, the pilot sometimes wasn't. You see the Condor finally jerk as the pilot tries to break into an emergency turn.

But it's too little, too late. As he tries to break off, you see several paint rounds spatter on the top of the cockpit.

"Gold Three eliminated. Red Flight wins!" Edge announces. "All planes stand down and return to base."

With that, you make your way back to the base. It's then that you realize your body is shaking all over as the combat high finally begins to wear off.

"Whoooo, did you feel that?" Fleur pants, apparently also coming down from her own high. "Holy crap that felt AMAZING!"

"I know!" You grin stupidly At least nobody could see you doing that under your oxygen mask.

Once you get back to base, the ground crew literally has to peel you out of the cockpit. You were barely in the air for more than an hour, and you're already completely exhausted.

Edge, on the other hand, lands her plane and leaps out of the cockpit like she's just taken a morning jog. She makes her way over to where you and Red Flight are resting, under the wing of your Falcon.

"Good job, Red Flight." Edge grins. "It wasn't perfect, but you got the job done. Keep this up, and we might start moving up to live fire ahead of schedule!"

"Thank you, ma'am." Wedge nods.

However you're a bit distracted. You crane your head back and look longingly at the now empty cockpit of your Falcon. It just seemed to be so... WRONG not to be in there right now.

"Hmmmm." Edge leans in very close to you, giving you face a very close scan.

"U-uh, is something wrong?" You ask.

"You've got that look." Edge smiles. "That look that says 'I belong in the air.' Almost reminds me of myself when I was young."

"R-really?"

"Yeah. Keep at it, Lara. I think you're going to make a great ace."

Words like that... just make you feel so giddy inside and you involuntarily make a high pitched squeal.

"Whoa, tone it down, Lara, there are children present!" Wedge says jokingly.

"Yeah, this is a school, after all." Biggs nods.

"S-shut up!"

So uh, Merc, this thing happened...

I wrote a new sheet for you to evaluate. Please don't punish me! Also, probably more important, I've made what should be the final edits to that first batch of sheets and sent it to your email along with the other sheet.

Well there needs to be a niche for big twin engined heavy fighters, like night fighting where their lack of agility isn't as big a downside.

The Condor already fills the role of ground attacker and heavy fighter quite well and you're gonna need a justification for anything bigger.

I'm still imagining aircraft engineers shitting themselves over the sudden realization that they can cram two engines on one plane.

And of course they start by chopping half a wing off of two Condors and welding them together to make a double condor!

It worked for the mustang.

Also, I know this is a bit late, but yes, Qyburn is still alive. However, his mad scientist days are more or less over due to his age.

His apprentice, however, still gets some crazy ideas. Self guiding lances? Holographic optics? INSANITY!

Oh boy, that gets 10/10 insane mad scientist cackles from Qyburn.

This has only happened one other time.

You will find out what that is soon.

Is his apprentice named Thomas? If so, does he have a friend and partner named Albert?
>>

I'm afraid this reference is passing over my head...

Eeeeeh, where's the technological contribution from other countries? Surely it hasn't all come from Gallia?

And where's muh Emmerian Tony Stark?

Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein.

Kinda important.

Oh and merc since it seems the reference about the p-61 went over your head I was referencing this pilot and his crew.
>>
>>27037872
Did you really need to point out your reference?
What were you hoping to achieve?
>>
>>27037830
Well yeah, the other countries are all doing their own thing.

It's just that in terms of aircraft tech, the Gallians are in the lead.

>>27037872
And I know what the P-61 means. I don't think there's any need to bring Young into this quest.

>>
>>27037941
Was just more of a reference for the sake of a joke than anything, definitely not a plead to add young into the quest.

Fuck now a small part of my brain is imagining Jager punching out a martian or a valkyrie shooting down a dread. The rest of my brain is currently trying to strangle that small part. My brain seems to do weird things when I get tired. Night Merc.

Don't worry you're not the first person to suggest a VMQ/SWQ crossover.
