You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

After a morning of drawing, you seem to have gotten dragged into a conflict between Nicolette, a captain of the Catle Guard, and Monique, captain of the Border Guard.

>Guard Rank: SNAKE
>Congratulations, you are now a miserable Snake!
>You might be a more respectable creature than a lowly Lizard, but you're still nothing special.
>Though you've shown some traits of "people," the Princess still doesn't see you as one.
>She dislikes you a bit less now, though.

"And I see that you haven't," you reply, unable to hide your aggravation. "I did enjoy myself at the tournament, though. It's the last time I've been able to go up against something other than a -wooden- dummy, after all."

You can hear murmuring from the Royal Guard, and the giggling of maids behind you. Did they follow behind the Princess?

"Your victory was but a fluke, I assure you," Monique replies.
"Nicolette," the Princess says, acting as if she didn't hear what either of you said at all, "could you tell me what exactly the problem is here?"
"Ah- well, Monique spotted this messenger here," Nicolette says as she points to the messenger. "and he insists that he be the one to personally escort him to the King. Sorry if his incessant WHINING interrupted your breakfast, Marianne. Reinhold."
"Yes, well if a certain someone would know her place and allow me to proceed, we wouldn't have a problem at all," Monique replies.

Monique's words seem to hit a nerve, and Nicolette walks towards him.

"I'm a Royal Guard Captain. My place is -right here-," she says, pointing down. "And as the captain of your precious Border Guard, your place is OUT THERE. so why don't you and your buddies turn your asses around and get the hell back to guarding the damned border!?" she yells.
"Ugh. I really wish that your promotion would have come with some actual manners," Monique replies.
"I don't want to hear that from a pompous ass like you. Didn't you know that you're supposed to wait for the lady to present you her hand before you kiss it?"
"And what would -you- know about being a lady?" he says while giving a cold gaze.
"...what was that?"
"Perhaps your poor manners are due to poor breeding? Though I've met your father and he is at least capable of acting in a civilized fashion, so I guess that only leaves your mother..."

Suddenly, all of the guards freeze in shock. Both the Border Guard and the Royal Guard stare at Monique in sheer disbelief. Nicolette doesn't respond to his words.

She only stares at Monique.

With a look that you know all to well.

A look that only results in one thing.

You see Nicolette swinging her fist back, about to punch Monique.

You see Monique starting to move to the side, having anticipated that his comment would cause her to lose control.

But neither of them sees you rushing in, using Nicolette as a blind spot. You dash past her at top speed and ready your arm for the strike. But posessing the trained senses of a master swordsman, Monique notices your approach...

...but he notices too late.

Time seems to stop as your fist hits his face with a satisfying CRACK, all of the momentum that you'd built up traveling through your arm and into the target of your anger. His limp body is sent flying through the air and into a nearby wall, hitting it hard before sliding to the ground.

The deed done, you look at your fist, covered in Monique's blood. If there's this much, you may have broken his nose...

...and then you turn to Nicolette, who is staring at you in shock.

I reckon Nicolette knows her job fine, but she's probably shaken up now, so it might be wise to take charge. Monique should receive medical attention and quarters which may or may not be officially a cell at the king's discretion but certainly do lock from the outside. The messenger should be escorted to the king. We and the princess, on the other hand, should return to breakfast. There'll probably be hell to pay for that punch in a bit, but at least we can face it on a full stomach.

Your temper having gone back down, you decide to make an attempt at saving face and not causing a further incident.

"AHEM," you clear your throat. "For his inappropriate conduct towards the Princess and his follow officers, I suggest that this man be detained," you say in a monotone.
"Uh- Yeah! Take him out of here!" Nicolette says, gesturing to the Royal Guard.

The other Border Guard members back away from Monique's unconscious body as two Royal Guards pick him up and begin to drag him away.

"That won't be necessary," the princess says loudly.
"Eh?" your turn to face her.
"But-" Nicolette begins, but cuts herself off.
"While he did act completely inappropriately, I believe that being punched in the face and rendered unconscious in front of his own subordinates is punishment enough," she says. "You two, take him to the infirmiry."
"As you wish, Your Highness!" As they lacked a free hand to salute, the two Royal Guards who were carrying Monique bow slightly to the Princess before hurrying off.

"I assume that you can handle the matter of the messenger," she says, turning to Monique.
"Uh- yeah, I'll get right on that!" Nicolette replies.

"Thanks, Reinhold. It wouldn't have been good to completely lose it in front of my men. I owe you one!"

She and the rest of the guards then empty out of the hallway, along with the messenger. With this incident over, you turn to the Princess.

"Uh-" you begin, but the Princess cuts you off mid-sentence.
"Melanie," she says gesturing towards a maid. "Please fetch some water so that he can wash off of his hand. I'd rather not have to eat breakfast with the scent of blood in the air."

Melanie wastes no time in fetching a small basin of water and some soap, which you use to wash off your hands. After drying them off, you follow the Princess back into the dining room and take your seats.

Figuring that the Princess is already in a worse mood than usual thanks to you punching a guy in the face in front of her, you decide to keep quiet and wait for your food. It isn't long before some butlers enter the room with a dining cart and present the two of you with your breakfast... this time it's a couple of sweet-smelling waffles.

But before you can bite into them, you hear the Princess speaking to you.

"About that man... he said that he faced you in the tournament?" she asks.
"Um, yeah," you reply. "He was the last guy I went up against, it was the final match of the tournament."
"So I assume then that had he won, he would have been chosen to become my bodyguard instead of you."
"...I suppose so?" you say, not quite sure about where this conversation is headed.

Then she turns to face you.

".........thank you," she says, a serious expression on her face.
"Eh!?" you reply, having been taken completely by surprise.
"You may be crude and lacking in manners, but I would much rather deal with you instead of... THAT," the Princess says with a long sigh. "And after what he said about Nicolette's mother, I was tempted to strike him myself."
"Heh, that would have been something to see," you say with a grin.
"Hmph. In event, do try not to punch everyone who acts inappropriately in the future. If it had been that messenger who acted so horribly instead of one of this kingdom's subjects, your actions may have led to an international incident."
"...I'll keep that in mind, Princess," you say, a bit bewildered at that prospect.

The two of you then get to eating your breakfast, finishing it quickly. The Princess then gets up from her seat and heads to her first class of the day, with you following closely behind her.

After a bit of walking, you make it to a familiar room. Upon entering it, you see Sir Gregory... that must mean that this is her politics class.

We never know when we'll need to shank someone or something but we either don't want to attract the attention of bringing a sword with us, we want to draw quickly and quietly, or we end up in a grapple or a clinch.

I'm thinking about 3 or so. One hidden in our boot, maybe one at the small of our back, I'm sure we can find places to put more. We always want to have something sharp and dangerous at hand.

Also, bump.
