Ask a Second Dragon War survivor anything.

A bit of background: I was born in Daenwell, dad was a common elf, mum was a hill elf. I joined the Service roughly at thirty (I served one year during the First War, 15th Light Infantry at the time). Moved to auxiliary for two years after the first war, was in Line Infantry during the Second.

Inb4 "why did we failed so hard during the second war if we faced dragons during the first", because the first war is misnamed - the Hazars didn't perfect the creation of dragons by the first war, so they used wyverns, which are not immune to magic and thus can be defeated using the old "infantry supports field magicians" doctrine. We started the second war with the same exact doctrine. You know how it ended. It was a shitty win at best, and speaking the truth, it hardly even qualifies to be called a victory anyway.

How in the four-hundred hells did the city of Gulavhit survive unscathed?
>>
>>27328070
Very shit winds. You needed red-winged dragons to fly sorties in the wind-region of Gulavhan, and the Hazies didn't have enough of them to begin with. They did make some cavalry runs, though, from what I know, but nothing aimed at the city itself.
>>

calling them "hill elves" doesn't change the fact you're half gnome

Why didn't the Council of Strictland just give the Hazars the concessions they wanted in the first place? Everyone knew the treaty of Ragh was just a pile of lies and post war punishment for the first one?

Also, how the hell did you not get burned to death

The Dahastan Accords basically left us sitting on a part of Hazaria. Shit was mismanaged and fucked up, Hazars wanted not only the original annexed territories, but some more to boot as well, you know how it went further.

I was in the Far East patrols during the first month of the war (and knowing what troops I serve in, I'd be black shit sandwich if I was in the West Patrol); later, I was luckily assigned to a company that covered a dragon-hunter unit's flank. Shit wasn't very good, but at least we've got something to strike down dragons with, and Hazars aren't the best when it comes to infantry skirmishes. That's the general idea.

Atleast you have some dirt in your blood, better than those full-blue snobs. Galwegian bowman here, we may be human but we've all got a drop or two of hill elf blood in our veins. Reckon that's why the King depended on us to make pin-cushions of whatever got put in front of us.

I was in the 6th Irregulars, out of Dunganny. Just a daily remind that the Galland didn't need any assistance surviving the Second Dragon War, and a lot of us even fought and died on the mainland. Take your swords and magic, give any son of Galland a bow, and we'll take down those scale-covered pheasants. Bigger bird, but it still goes down.

>>27328227

>>
>>27328279
That's only something you have to worry about when dealing with Kingsmen, from what I hear. They tend to abuse the system for their own gain, since they do sort of run the show. Ain't no-one gonna take the word of a Galwegian girl over that of a Kingsman from a good family. Buncha shites.

I will tell you that most of the units that're fully composed of one of us happy additions to the Crown like Galland or those savage fuckers from the Highlands tend to not stand for any of that shite. Then again, for the Highlanders they're women look nearly as bad as the men.

What's your favorite memory of the war? If you have any, of course.
Brutal times, I would understand if there's nothing you'd wish to recall.
>>
>>27328371
Everyone, look. The Hazie thinks he's a person, talking just like one of those gilded Kingsmen. They may be ignoble nobility, but at least they are the sort of black-hearted monsters that got a bit hissy and decided to try to wipe out the rest of the world because someone had taken a bit of their land. Galland may be part of the Unified Kingdoms, but you don't hear about us deciding to try to feck the rest of the world.
>>
>>27328326

We were involved in a lot of the forest warfare. Helped out a bit, I guess.
Mostly we just used it as an excuse to annex some rather choice pieces of territory
>>
>>27328432
We never really saw any of your ilk back on the island. Heard stories, though, from those that were serving overseas. It true that every weapon you lot carries is poisoned, right down to your claws?

Y'know, I figger a Galwegian and a lizard might make for an interesting fight, given we're both hardy as shite and at home in the woods.
>>
>>27328279
Well, stuff happens. Don't ask, don't tell, all that, but things tend to occur, especially in mixed-sex units.
>>27328283
Not much, on parade inspections, mostly. Very fitting name, speaks in screaming voice. I was in a platoon that only saw limited action, so can't tell much on his command style.
>>
>>27328461
Normally. We don't have much in the way of metal in our homeland, but we do have lots and lots of venomous critters. Hazies laughed when they saw us holding thorn-branches, then they laughed because that's what the toxins of the Choking Joy does to you.
>>
>>27328490
...Yeah. Remind me to never try the local cuisine.
>>
>>27328429

Only a braggart shames an already defeated foe and claims it as victory.

I served with honor, dog. Unlike you and your "Unified Kingdom". It is easy to say that my beloved Hazaria was the agressor, but it was your Council of Kings that have annexed my nation, stolen our riches for three hundred years. Mark my words, your council of Kings will dissolve into infighting and Hazaria will rise once more.
>>
>>27328051
Elven filth, how can you justify the famine brought on when you occupied the Dwarven lands. We didn't need you to come in and "protect" us. Our homeland is not a strategy point.
>>
>>27328496
Cooking gets rid of most of it, especially if it's been steamed in the Gallam Gott geyser-vents.
>>
>>27328291
Nope, got my letter of disarmament half a year ago. Still in National Reserve, though.
>>27328326
In my opinion - not much. That's like the story about the effectiveness of orks during the Gurhkadkan invasion. On paper? They had our ass in almost every fight, in practice, we were burning their capital after a week.
Lizardfolk were really good in the forests where they were deployed, but that's a drop in the ocean at best and I won't spare half an hear for it.
>>27328420
We actually posed for a military painter once. Was really cool. Next to an armoured bronze dragon, with two large black flags. Was pretty unpleasant to just stand for two hours, but it felt good knowing that you'll be left in memories for quite a time to come.

We send our troops away to help you lot in your bloody war and the second we start being pushed back the entirety of the highlands are occupied. Third Militia here and damned proud of it, king be damned I fought for my homeland against all enemies.
>>
>>27328536
Well, scratch-daggers stop being so effective when the enemy actually gets to wear their plate armour. We did quite a good job breaking up supply-lines though.
>>
>>27328509
Look, even before the Kingsmen came to our island, we Galwegians were content to drink, farm, and kick the fecking teeth out of our neighbors if they gave us any reason to. And when the Kingsmen did come, we gave 'em some of the most savage fighting them felchers ever got. Even when they did "pacify" us, all that meant is that on the Big Book of People to Kill one name got struck out. You cause trouble, we'll cause you more. That's just the Galwegian way.

>>27328533
I ain't even gonna ask. Though t'be fair, it still probably tastes better than the kippers those highlanders are so obsessed with. Buncha tattoo'd, skirt-wearing weirdos, if you as me. But right craic lads.

>>27328536
Heh, the National Reserve. That's a bit of a joke, ain't it? At least around here, it's regarded as one. We got the bare minimum boys in it just to keep the Kingers happy, but every man and woman from 16 to 50 or so is a militiamen. They just give you armor and gear, right?
>>
>>27328591
Go read Tandor's "The Farsworn Army in Numbers". To eat the amount of food accounted as "consumed" by the Pilavern Division, they had to eat more than it is physically possible for an elf to eat within every single day. Go spread your lies somewhere else, underhead.
>>
>>27328618
Nope, uniform and swortsword. If anything happens, you get a pike "on-spot". At least it's a Mark 4 Full-Length, not an older Mark 3. I've held one during reserve training - stuff's fucking rotten.
>>
>>27328618

[spoilers]Moles aren't half-bad eating, in a pinch.[/spoilers]

That's some joke you got there there, digger. Especially pretending that you actually defended the highlands. I know some of those blues, and I know you felchers did horse-shite to help them. Besides, the occupation was a strategic move they made. The mad sods figgered if they feigned capture, it'd just give 'em more Hazies in the highlands. And more Hazies in the highlands means more bastards to kill.
>>
>>27328625
You can state facts and figures all you want. When you start seeing babes dying because your allies are starving them, come and speak to me about fairness. I also find it funny that despite the eternal friendship between the nations when it came to the Hazar as soon as we broke into a civil war know one stood up to help the king. Sure I fought on the other side and was part of the siege on Gerelbor but still, I didn't see a single knife-ears or smooth-fingers there.

If I recall correctly, we offered your nation vassal status when war first broke out, if you took up arms against a common enemy. Autonomy and protection with Hazaria as your firm ally.

You sent our envoy back with his head stitched to his buttocks.

Our two nations have no so different stories, but Hazaria resists, you are willing to remain puppets.
>>

Haha, thanks for reminding be about that. Stupid feckin' shites.

Here's a lesson for you, Kazie. If you want Galwegians to fight for you, you gotta fight us first. Show us you're worth backin' and not some weak-willed, shite-drinkin' patsies. Which, uh, history now seems to point you as bein'.

The Pilsker Campaign, mostly. From Pilsker itself all the way to Hazaria. Most of my company was scorched tatters by the fourth month, so we were disbanded into separate platoons and assigned to dragon hunters as the need raised.
>>
>>27328747

You weren't so cocky when my Dragon Mounts burned your king to cinders at Fallreach. Or that quaint little town you call a "port". I don't even think it had a name. No point in worrying now, it's not much more than a scar on the island.

Still, respect where it is due, you still managed to repel the 3rd and 11th divisions, along with the 6th Fleet. You're just lucky Dwarves are harder to burn.

Oh, and your king? I never can recall his name.
We mixed his ashes with the red wine Lord Militant Rechtopf sent us in congratulations. We drank well that day.
>>
>>27328774
You ever get any confirmed kills on a dragon? Helped to take down plenty in Dunganny and the surrounding area, but I actually did get the final shot on two drakes. Captain let me keep the head of the first one, got it preserved and hung up on the wall. Hearthfire glitters off the eyes something fierce. Still wished I'd actually been able to take down one of the big ones, rather than a horse-sized lizard.

Fuck wars and fuck politics. With the amount of gold and mythril spent on flank units alone we could have had populated the great plains with windmills and artesian wells thereby wiping out any risk of famine for at least three generations.

Thirteen if some propaganda regarding birth control was put in place in the goblin deeps.

With the amount of magic spent on spells of mass destruction we could have lifted the ruins or Kraak from the depths of Silver Strait - with its wealth of artworks, artifacts, stone tablets and quite possibly magically sealed libraries as well!

Or, for more economical bonuses, we could have turned the desert plateau of Kurg into a lush garden, bringing price of mithril to a fraction of its current level.

Fuck wars and fuck warmongering, power-hungry dictators.

Yes I mad.
>>
>>27328811
Fuck no. I'm not coming close to those. You need long-line archers carrying enough amp amulets to be seen by any flow-visor from mountains kilometers away only to down a dragon. I was there to fend off auxiliary, I was perfectly okay with it.
>>
>>27328810
Eh, the king was a Crown-kissing felcher. None of us really miss him. Called the Blaggard King for a reason. And as to the destruction of Laugharne, it was the only town of more than twenty-thousand that your lizards managed to fully torch. Rhoose, Duffase, Aberaeva, they all made it aside from a bit of scorching.

And I don't really think the dwarves deserve much credit for anything on our island. Badb's breasts, I don't think they deserve much credit for anything at all, except maybe the Seige of Holden.
>>
>>27328683
Well, there was that one time Special Project made a rocket propelled swamp dragon but that never got past the prototyping phase.
>>
>>27328774

Hmm. Which front did you fight on when you entered Hazaria?

I was recalled to the capital, but I skirmished at the border a little during the opening battles. I lost my Green there, some madman slipped through our patrols and gutted Yfre while I slept. I had to muster like a common peasant for a month and a half until the reservists reinforced us.

To be honest our spirits were fairly broken by that point, but I will not dishonor the memory of my men by saying we didn't fight like lions.
>>
>>27328898

the truth of the story is that it worked like a charm and so impressed one of the high dragon females that they bonded and flew off into the sunset together
>>
>>27328883

Holden! There was a battle! I wish I had been on that front. A hard won victory, and later an even bitter defeat. We lost Klarr and Vosz there, that's where it all went wrong in my opinion. That idiot Enril took over, far too green.

I suppose you're not complaining though.

I think if you ever came to Galland, you might faint.

>>27328837
Fair enough. We just heard stories about some of the auxs getting a little feisty and beheading dragons in their sleep. There's a fella I heard about in the Highlands that was travelling with the 8th Irregulars out of... shite, was it... Elgin? Rest of his unit died out in the field, but he managed to get his revenge. Wandered back into Stonekirk a week latter, on the brink of death with a hewn-off dragon head dragging behind him.

Didn't know if you got many drakes out on the front, or if we took the brunt of them as invading skirmishers. Figger Line Infantry could take one down without more than a few casualties.
>>
>>27328811
Got one once. They'd brought it down lose to the edge of the Vashia forest, guessing they intended to burn it down. We had a big group of warriors, twice as many as they had. Leapt out the forest, cast down some some smoke bombs, swarmed the escorts.
I had a Lattanwood short bow - awful accuracy, but'll punch through just about anything up close - with a cocktail of about seven different venoms on the tip. Managed to get an arrow into its neck. Heard it scream for the next week before they finally put it out of its misery.
Lost quite a few good warrior that day to that bloody beast, but they never tried it again.

I am Hazaritai, born in jodhpurs with my feet in stirrups. I began to learn to fly a Wyvern before I could walk.

I was very young when the first Dragon War began. Fool hardy and proud men declared war on the Gnomes, our ancient rivals for the steppes and mountains.

It was not always a relationship of hatred. We have always ruled the skies, and once considered the gnomes curiosities. They bred like rabbits - not cross species true like a human, but among themselves they fornicate with great virility. Four to Six child families are not uncommon. Fortunately they are small and do not require much space or food, but even so, as generations unfolded their tunneling branched out from the hills and beneath our plains. Still we did not care, for we ruled the skies.

The gnomes delved both shallow and deep, and soon began to find a wealth of gold and jewels. Still we did not care, for we ruled the skies, and the value of our Wyvern riders was greater.

Then the modern age of commerce began. The trade unions connected all lands, and the reserves of gold and jewels the Gnomes had found - much of it mined beneath our own steppe's and mountains, because a fortune unto itself. Then, we began to care.
>>
>>27328938
T'be fair, I figger you'd have kept it as a victory and a stronghold if it weren't for the Dwarves swarming the stone beneath it like a thousand little moles. Dwarven tunnelers and sappers are probably just about the only thing they're good for.

Hah. I'd heard rumors that we'd planned to turn Holden into our forward roost. Your little island and probably most of the Daenwell would have been nothing more than coal and memories if the damn towers hadn't been undermined.

>>
>>27328966
To the Gnomes, what was delved from beneath the earth was theirs. We who rode the sky had never cared before. But now in this modern age, of massed Arbalet and Mage Troops, the power of our Wyvern Riders began to wane. Once a mighty Empire of nomad riders, we faced a world in which we were increasingly obsolete.

An old man will cling to the warmth of old glories like a drowning man to driftwood. We accused the Gnomes of theft. They disagreed. Tensions mounted. Finally, in a fit of temper, our Grand Marshall Sergoli swore that the gnomish trade city of Heyblup would offer reperations for the profits they had made off of Hazaritai lands or be burned to ashes. They called his bluff.

He was not bluffing.

Thus began the first great war.

The Gnomes had their allies, a labyrinthine coalition of trade agreements and debts of protection formed from their great wealth. We too had our own, ancient feudal pacts with nations whose borders we had held by the wings of our Wyverns. This spark ignited the fires of war, a war which would involve every great nation of our world.

I was young then. Fifteen, perhaps sixteen winters of age. Still I burned with a sense of patriotic duty and a lust for adventure and glory. I lied about my age and joined the service. It was easy - my great grandfather had been a Knightly Cohort, and I provided my families own wyvern mount. With the need for men, they would turn away no such prize, even if his face seemed somewhat smooth for a sky-rider.

The ferocity of the conflict suprised everyone, ourselves included. Magic and Alqhemy changed much about war, and the death toll was staggering. We ruled the skies, so the enemy filled them with arrows. We swooped down from above, so the enemy met us with shields of fire and rows of pikes.

I flew in five major engagements over three years. Hillrek, Tomlins, Bhudoin, Khiergaard, Naumwhitzch. I lost count of the skirmishes. My bow and spear gained so many notches I grew to be sick to think of the men I had killed, and I stopped counting all together.

We fought till a stalemate, before the Kingsmen entered the war and swung the tide against us.

So ended the first Dragon war. Worse was to come.

When the war ended, Hazar was blamed fully for the cost. Reparations we had no hope to pay were levied against us. Our knights were stripped of their ranks and titles, and we were forbidden to craft our spears and bows.

Worst of all they took our Wyverns. My Mishka, whom I had flown with since I was a sprog, who I loved as my own sister - I had to listen to her plaintive cries and struggles as she was bound and led away, taken to be meat and hide for a foreign lords glory. It was the worst day of my life.

Once we had ruled the plains, once kings had courted our knights for aid in their conflicts, once we had been bound only by the sky. Now we were reduced to shepherds, dependent on foreign bread to live, and ruled by a king approved by a coalition of outsiders. Many starved, either our of pride or true lack of sustenance.

Any fool could have seen the seeds such misery would plant. But all the world had been blinded by the smoke of alqhemical gas and the blood of thousands of young men stinging their eyes.

Urgh. Paladins. Don't get me started on the bloody Paladins. I was detained when we finally surrended by some miser called Halfwint. Preached at us day and night. I almost converted to commit half the sins he described out of spite.

Well this brings back some memories, Fledrik Quillstaff, Aven Experimental Warfare Division. I remember we were assigned to find non-magical methods to deal with dragon squadrons and some mage got the bright idea of enlarging Spitting Silkworms. I think the poor bastard just wanted to feel useful but sympathy was in short supply when we were skimming cloud level, dog fighting with other testers and wrestling with a grub the size of a dog. It wasn’t glamorous, it wasn’t effective and it never got past testing stages.
I am however proud to be at least one-fifth responsible for the development of the air bursting cannon shell. It’s just a shame we finished it so late in the war.

Actually, us riders feared the scorpions more than the galwegians. No, not the giant scorpians the lizardmen had in the early stages. Those where weird but not too much trouble. No, it was those damn triggerfish could punch through our armor like balsa wood and outranged anything we had. Oh sure, a good archer could get you if you got too close but most shots flat out bounced off.

In the decades of suffering that would follow, a whole generation was born having never known the skies. The political situation was always in flux, and in uncertainty men look to the past. All we had were stories, stories long dead.

I remember when I first met Drugal Klemnar - in a tap-house in Zimbarterie. I was working as a stall cleaner. He was an unassuming man, small in stature but with a prodigious mustache, and one eye permanently yellowed by Lizard Gas. We were both veterans of the first war and fell into commiseration about old times. When he spoke it was evocative, I could still hear Miishka's cries and feel the wind rushing through my nose.

I thought nothing else of it until years later when he would become Chancellor, through a mixture of sheer charisma and back-room skull-duggery.

When he took power he was a whirlwind. He crushed the opposition parties - literally, as we now all know. He modernized the nation - dirt trails and wagon tracks were replaced with cobble and rail. We began our own full scale mining concerns. Modern Alqhemy and Magic were applied to fixing the practical problems of Country. Everyone adored him, even the foreigners, to whom he seemed an answer to the longstanding issue of Hazaritai unrest.

Fools all of us.

He was very careful to tiptoe around the regulations of the surrender treaty. Where he couldn't, he would break it outright and use his absolute power to enforce a veil of secrecy. That is how we were able to breed the Dragons right under your noses.

A mixture of husbandry and Alqhemy created one of the greatest living weapons to ever exist. Our wyverns, bulked to enormous size, covered in armor plates, with articulated legs and breath of flesh searing fire. It was something beyond fairy tales. A bizzare weapon for a modern era, nothing was like it before and nothing will be like it again.
>>
>>27329380
The scorpions weren't really a battle tactic, we just sort of diverted their migration a bit. Saved us having to cull them.

Some believe it is what led to his erraticness later in life. In truth, had the Khein's faculties not been damaged by Alqhemy, we may not have lost the war.

>>27329433
I remember when I first saddled my Stonenose. Such a brute it was! Bullish and heavy - not agile like wyverns. An entirely new kind of flying.

When he thought he was ready, Chancellor Baron Drugal Klemnar declared himself great Khein of the Hazaritai people. A title we hadn't had for ages - it called back to ancient times, before even the first war. An era of myths, when our wandering tribes populated the world with the mythological Empire

Then he reinstated the army under the guise of "civil defense". Being unimployed and longing for the discipline and camaraderie I remembered from the military, I enlisted - this time well within the legal age.

To my surprise, the Khein remembered me, and our tap-house conversation years ago. I was fast tracked into the secret Dragon-Rider program.

Surprise as it was to all of you, we knew about the war months in advance. Of course, back then we all believed it was just to retake old plains ground stolen from us by the treaty, and it would be a matter of one or two quick offenses over mostly uncontested ground. Which is what it was - at first.

We scorched across Gnome-lands, doubling the size of Hazar at a stroke. Everyone was stunned, ourselves included. We seemed unstoppable by any measure of modern warfare.

Heady with new glories and the freedom of the skies, none of us paid heed to the Serpent-Neck mounted units following in the rear of the army, who loitered to 'secure' large gnome burrow and population centers. Mixed with the smell of burning turf and wood, and the smoke of battle, how could we have realized what was happening behind and below us?

They were, if nothing else, very efficient.

So the Second Great war began. I flew in Hurmbold, Dunmar, and Khregir before being promoted to Leftennant Lance alongside old Firefox himself in the Kingdom of Al-Khumbar. The local minerals were of vital importance to the Alqhemy of the war-effort, and we fought you up and down the burning sands, turning dunes to glass and filling canyons with the burned columns of men. By Gods, war is a special kind of hell, one that fills you with loathing and longing in equal measure. I still remember the terrible odors and sights.

I still remember feeling my old hands tremble with excitement each time I gripped my Stone-noses reigns.

Wouldn't be surprised. Though to be honest, we don't much care. Any Crown-kissers start shite in Galland, we give 'em a good thumpin'. Not to mention we seem to slam 'em on the pitch anytime our teams cross paths. We ruin enough of their livers with our whiskey, though, that I consider it fair payback. Besides, the Unified Kingdoms got plenty of enemies, so we get the best of both worlds. The king's gold and battlefields to bleed on.

It might seem like a sour situation, but we're content. You'll still get some rabble-rousers trying to get riots in the streets with cries of revolution, but it's mostly just talk.
>>
So is anyone here more familiar with the service records with what our service used to call the "pincushions"? Enchanters with no real combat abilities who used to pile on enchanted piercings, tattoos, and jewelry until some of them literally exploded from the interacting magical fields? We only really had one in our regiment: not an impressive mage, so he had to wear so many weakly enchanted items he exploded one morning in the chow line while he was putting his seventh ring on.

I think the stronger ones usually had fewer items? But as for how they were deployed where they were more common, I've got no idea, and I've never had reason to ask.
>>
>>27329997
No idea. Only pincushions I know of were Hazie fighters that tried to take our sky from us.

Oh, and I'll be headed down to the Witchwood for a bit of mostly-legal fun in a bit. So if I pop off, that's likely where I went.
>>
>>27329997
Think I saw one of them when the Drake-Chiefs were persuaded to send some of us to the open field. Well, I saw bits of one. They glowed slightly.

>>27329893

>>
>>27330046
Can't take the cold? Reckon that explains why we don't see many in Galland. I'm not saying it's already rainy and cold, but it's pretty much the assumed weather 'round the year, save for when we trade rain for snow.
>>
>>27330046
Yeah, the glowy tattoos threw me a bit when I first saw them. But our guy had none of those: too obvious at night and in dark buildings.

So what was the one you saw doing at the time? Or what HAD he been doing, rather?
>>
>>27330082
We can go there, we just need to wear really thick fur and wool coats, both resources which are fairly rare in our lands. Or a warmth spell, but none of magicians bother to learn those in favour of strangling people with vines.

>>27330088
I think it was some kind of invulnerability magick, from what I could gather from the bystanders. Obviously didn't work for them though.
>>
>>27329997

A rather mad little idea I remember it floating through the department even before the war. Naturally we took one look at and told them they were mad.

Didn't stop Old Scrollbeak killing a few young mages just to be sure. We submitted no less than twelve petitions for the banning of the practice but hay what do the birdbrains know?
>>
>>27330131
I just don't understand folks obsession with magic and using it all the damn time. We got the runes that was given to us by the fey, y'know, the wood elves. But it ain't like we try to shove them into every part of the day. Y'might have a rune of strikin' engraved onto the blade of your sword or a rune of fire in your hearth, but that's it.
>>
>>27330180
Us lizardfolk don't get on to well with the wood elves. Similar habitats and all that. They never gave us any runes.
>>
>>27330212
As legends go, they've lived in the woods of the island since we first came here from the mainland all those years ago. Initially, we just stuck to the cost and they stuck to the woods. But as the years passed, the lines began to blur. Like I said, Galwegians got a bit of elvish blood in 'em, you can see it from the kinda hawkish features and the slight point on our ears. Those blue-blooded high elf gits always refer to us as half-elves, but I don't figger the math's quite right.

There are still elves on the island that're pure fey. Live in the Witchwoods, great patches of forest that even we get lost in. It's a pretty friendship relationship, though, especially for us.
>>
>>27330212

It became quite a point of conflict between the Wooden ambassador and department when the possibility of sharing the manufacturing process was raised. Scanty of the forest, gifts to be treasured you know all the usual nonsense.
>>
You bastards had it easy. We kingsmen had to bail you out of your stalemate and deal with the god damned tengu sons of bitches in the east.
>>
>>27330711
Not our problem, crowny. Any tengu show up to Galland, and they'll leave with a few extra feathers courtesy of my bow.
>>
>>27330131
Ah. Magical wards ARE quite useful, so long as using them doesn't make you explode, I guess.

So are people with these sorts of enchantments still... you know, dangerous?
>>
>>27329797
Eh, sod it. Have some history.
My people have lived in the swamps and rainforests at the midst of the world and in the shadow of the Rising Fire mountain range. Though most lived in the swamps or rainforests and there learned the benefits of all the venoms and toxins of the wildlife in their land, some tribes worked the geysers of the great caldera lakes, some lived in the montane forests creating intricate terrace farms, others ventured into the northerly temperate forests and came into conflict with loggers from other cultures. Trade and war both occurred between them as the cultures diversified - though all of them maintained a primitive fear of the wildfire, that which destroys homes, food and eggs, that which cannot be controlled.
The unification of the tribes came at the hands of a hen from one of the geyser tribes. Her name was Kahemar of Gallam Gott, and she was the first inventor of bright-powder, created from the yellow soil of the vents, potash mined by some of the mountain tribes and diced animal bladders. With both bright-powder, skill of tongue and her armies, she unified the tribes through speech and through blade. Although she died soon after this was complete, slain by a vengeful rainforester, the framework she laid down was the basis of the council of Drake-Chiefs that made us strong.
Bright-powder eventually made its way into the hands of human, dwarf and elf via the northern forest tribes' traders, where cultures with a better grasp of metallurgy created cannon and musket.
>>
>>27331484
When the First Dragon War came to pass, my people took an opportunity, as we always have.
With the Hazers occupied elsewhere, the Council pushed north. Warriors from the swamps and rainforests brought Lattanwood bows, envenomed scratch-knives and thorn-whips. Refineries in the mountains and calderas produced Puqqi smoke, fog-bombs and bright-powder grenades. The leader of the Hazers sent some forces against us, and, well, we committed horrific acts upon them. Puqqi smoke sends us to choking fits and tears, but in humans it attacks the brain and kills them, if they're lucky. Seeing its effects was awful. I come from a nation of warmongering poisoners, and the results of Puqqi gas still give me disquiet.
We tacked ourselves on to the Unified Kingdoms and insinuated ourselves into the treaty, securing the lands we'd conquered. I'd hatched a few years before we went to war, and spent part of my youth as a scout. Didn't get blooded until later, against a revolutionary group of Hazers who were trying to prove a point by attacking us.
When the Second Dragon War rolled around, we were one of the few 'Kingdoms' who were ready for it - we'd been itching for a fight since the last one. We hadn't had the losses the gnomes or Kingsmen had, hadn't been so bloodied by the first war that we'd lost our taste for it.
We had more foes to face this time, I think. Perhaps Mr. Klein remembered Puqqi smoke. I'd earned my way to being a headsman, lead some warriors into various forest skirmishes. Took part in the final battle at Hazarroghst. Nothing major, didn't storm the castle or anything. We'd come off pretty well by the end. Grabbed some land nobody wanted to hold on to, everyone else was in piss-poor shape. Pretty powerful nation now, actually.
>>
If the elf is still here I do have a question. Did you have any contact with the North Spine Empire, and do you have any justification of ignoring its unprovoked attacks on the Underhome during their tenure as your allies. Moreover do you date wars end at the surrender of the Hanzars or when had to surrender to the Empire's giants?
>>
>>27328819
>lock self away to become a lich
>ignore rest of the world
>don't read any history or books about successful liches
As one lich to another, you seriously screwed up. The key to successful lichdom is laying low, keeping informed, and looking for opportunities. I would suggest Arkaneth's autobiography as a guide.
>>
>>27332108
I think the elf is long gone.
>>
Are the stories of elf slavery true?
>>
>>27333783
...Not all of them. Sometimes a high ranking officer or nob would take one as a status symbol. As much as they "trained" them you'd never convince an elf that they're supposed to be a slave so you'd never be able to trust them. If you couldn't trust them, then you had to watch them all the time and examine all their work.

Really, they only good that came out of that debacle was that around the battle of Juniper there was a minor purging in the ranks and anyone with a slave was a flag for investigation. Probably marked two thirds of the worst officers in the entire Hazar army. Unfortunately, that left us with a shortage of officers for operation watermelon.
>>
Any truth to the rumours that the Hazar top brass tried to do away with the Khein?
>>
>>27331507
Yeah. Definitely glad that Galland's nicely settled in the sea between and a bit out from the Unified Kingdom's mainland and the Hazies. We might've had to suffer through the Duffase Blitz and all the other raids and assaults, but we just hunkered down and kept working. The Kingdoms ended up using us as their primary source of wool throughout the war, too, so it ain't even like production slowed to a crawl.
>>
>>27334822

So many revisionists. Detail it up and down all you like, you can tell who's a revisionist easier then a liar in five card. Don't try and whitewash the wars and gloss over the horrors that really happened with silk robed political maneuvering with silver tongues that really occurred with knives in backs and families held ransom ion foreign forts. Our progeny and those that come after have a right to know the shameful horrors everyone, and I mean everyone, participated in, for the sake of victory. War is hell indeed.
>>
>>27335516
War may be a right tosser that takes men as breaks them, but that doesn't mean that you don't fight. Like the High Chief said, "The whole history of the world is summed up in the fact that, when nations are strong, they are not always just, and when they wish to be just, they are no longer strong." The Hazies as a whole were a nation of destructive, mass-murdering bastards. Galland would've support the Black King if they'd decided to invade the underworld, too.

Alright, so, Grimthaz, the lich from a few eras back, here. On the suggestion of a very kind gentleman (do send word if you happen to see this, as I'd be more than pleased to spare you the atrocities that are no doubt to come) I went ahead and returned to that tomb's librarium to dig up a study on dragons.

It had been somewhat about 150, maybe 175 years back that I had finished it, and after a quick refresher, I learned that he was right! Dragons CAN just be created! Even without the bones! As a former necromancer (it was the last job I held before lichdom, you may recall) I guess it just hadn't occurred to me that you can magic something up without defiling its remains. Old habits DIE hard, haha!

Anyway, after the better part of this afternoon and evening, I've successfully brought about a handful of dragons, starting from a wyvern and moving on up to a lovely icy-blue tinged drake the size of a barn. I'll call him Cobalt, I think.

In any case, I digress. I have some magnificent theories on streamlining this process, and hopefully by the end of this weekend I'll be ready to begin a third Dragon War for us all to enjoy. I don't quite know who I'll eradicate from the face of the realm first, any thoughts on that would be appreciated, but do rest assured that this is going to be the BEST Dragon War yet!
>>
>>27337147
You couldn't give us a few decades, could you?
>>

I mean, think about it. Everyone's weak and recovering right now. There's no fight, no spectacle. You need to wait for people to build up forces big enough to make this whole 'extinction event' seem worthwhile.
>>
>>27337181
Ugh, I've been sitting for too long already! I need to get these old bones in motion, my good man! I'm just teeming with all kinds of delicious ideas for displays of magical might! Bursting with arcane alacrity! No no, I've tarried too long already.

Now, it is true that I don't quite recognize much of the realm, as it stands today. Not all that certain how much time has even -passed- since I entered the tombs, even, but all of the old kingdoms and counties I wanted to devastate and deliver sweet retribution unto are gone, and I shant allow even one generation more to pass without enacting my vengeance.

For...what, exactly, escapes me at the moment. Should have written it down. But I'm certain that at one point I screamed to the heavens above that I'd show them all, and by golly, I'm going to!
>>
>>27337287
We've had lots of displays of magical might in recent years. I fear your skills will go unappreciated in the current climate.
>>
>>27337308
>>27337271
The more I think about it, the more I love the idea, though! Surely there's enough manpower left in the world to muster up one last valiant stand against evil! Old enemies banding together to fend off annihilation and the end of all things? It sounds so...so...heroic!

One last hurrah! The third Dragon War! Gnashing fangs, beating wings, mighty serpents blocking out the sun! I'd like to be able to personally tussle with the best each of your standing armies or empires has to offer, of course, but I'll understand if heroes are in short supply at the moment, this is short notice.
>>
...Looks like we'd better starting developing anti-magic gas.

Ah! Yes! You have a bit of Friday, and all of Saturday and Sunday to work at it! This is what I'm talking about, desperate ideas, drastic measures! Now you've got an edge! Oh, if anybody survives at all, just imagine the songs they'll sing!

>tfw you think about a game in which you play as a rag-tag group of PoWs in a Hazar stalag

Alright, back from the witchwood. Nursing a bit of a shiner and I think I might've sold my eye color, but sweet shite that was a fantastic evening. Takes a wood elf to get me to drink wine, and boy do they have wine.

Start with the giants, they'll take long enough for the rest of us to arm up, and no one will miss the genocidal bastards.

So, you a chick?
I can never tell with elves
>>
>>27341198
Always forget that high elves don't have facial hair. D'you know if hill elves do or not? All I can vouch for are wood elves. And with them, it's just like us. Go scruff on your face, it's a man. Clean and smooth, it's a gel.
>>
>>27335356
We were helping ourselves to the treasures of your land, besides we were mercenaries anyways. We have our own kingdom that's better than any you surface folks.
>>
>>27341620
We just wouldn't understand because you're so underground. Take your scarves and flannel and fuck off you obscure cunt.
>>
>>27341620
>Dwarven craftsman are superior to all others
>wait, shit, surface stuff is better

Whatever, digger. You made a negligible effort, got negligible returns, and had hilariously high casualties because we got you to do the shite no sane man would do, aka sapping. Whatever pay you got was practically funerary costs. Besides, can we really forget the incident in Dullahand where... how many was it? A thousand dwarves died in their tunnels because of a clerical error that led to the lizards gassing you with that stink-gas?

Look, we know you wish you were as cool as those mad-brained, blue-paint wearing highlands. Or as talented craftsmen as the gnomes or even the fucking Kingers. But face it, digger. The only niche you hairy fucks got is the hole you live in.

Oh, and I found a portrait of one of the elders of the wood elf tribe whose witchwood I just got back from. He's fecking ancient. Older than all of the others, and some say that he was here to greet us when we first journeyed to the island. And while he may look like an old man, those muscles ain't no joke. Man's got arms like steel and a kick like a mule.
>>
>>27341799
I can't place it for the life of me (heh, lich puns) but this guy looks real familiar.
>>
>>27341901
You sure about that? He's well over a thousand, at a quick guess. Probably older, since I think the first Galwegians crossed the waves sometime then or earlier. And so far as I know, wood elves don't leave the island. At least we've never seen 'em go.
>>
>>27342007
They used to get around, back in my day. Hell, you could hardly find a patch of woods without at least a tribe or two.

I wonder if Galwegians might be descended from the Marquess de Galwyr and his house. Lord protector of the eastern marches of the Dunreach. A great brute of a man, fond of the hunt, perfect for patrolling the farthest corner of the realm.
>>
>>27342099
Well, saying "great brute" and "fond of the hunt" seems like some awful kind compliments to be giving, so I wouldn't be too surprised if we're a mix of whoever the shite you're talking about and the wood elves that live in the inner woods.
>>
>>27342185
He was a great man! This was before I branched into necromancy, and darker magic. For a time I was court wizard at his hall. Tutored his daughter. Punched me square in the jaw when I told her that I wouldn't teach her how to make a warhammer with thaumaturgy. The girl was 9 but she was a Galwyr alright.
>>
>>27342277
Yeah. Sounds like Galwyr and his folk took a bit of a ride across the sea to this cloudy, rainy island of sheep and elves. Might want to write a book about that, maybe more detailing that shift. Perhaps give the whole massive-war-against-all-life a bit of a delay as you fiddle with history and make some real important discoveries.
>>
>>27342377
Well, I mean...I guess it couldn't hurt. Supposing I DO wipe out all life, it'll be too late then to go through and sort everything out. Figure who ended up where, what course history took. I'm sure there were countless crossroads that were met.

It'd only be fitting, to have an accurate historical timeline for all of the cultures I intend to ultimately extinguish.
>>
>>27342593
Yeah, that actually sounds pretty fitting. Though I'd reckon you want more than just the Galwegians to be sorted out. Still gotta figger out the events that led to the Crown which led to the Unified Kingdoms. Gotta follow the rise of the gnomes. What exactly happened to the elves that left 'em so diff'rent. What happened to the bastards that pissed you off so bad you shat your flesh. Where the fuck those sand-dwellers in Al-Khumbar came from.

Also means you get a new title, that you might wanna use more than lich. Something with a bit of swag, to it, y'get me? The Historian? Eh, maybe too dry. The Archivist. How about that? Big fancy word, conjures up a deal of respect and awe.
>>
>>27342674
So many mysteries. Unanswered questions. Riddles steeped in time.

I've got to get back down to that library and start my work.
>>
>>27342704
You got it, mate. Stay sharp, I figger?I reckon not needing sleep'll help a fair deal. Anyways, definitely sure the elves got my eye color earlier tonight. Gonna get some rest and sleep off the ent-wine before I head back to the witchwood to haggle for it back.
>>
>>27342744
Good night, Bran of Llanwys! If you don't get your eye color back, come by the...Archivis, we'll call it, and I can probably do something for that.

Thaumaturgy.
>>
>>27342794
No offense, mate, but I'd sooner put my trust in a dream-thieving elfmother than whatever the shite it is you're talking about. If I'm lucky, she'll just make me pick some flowers. If I ain't so lucky, I'll be filching something from the wights.
>>
Hey, Lichguy, I'm pretty sure your dragonpocalypse part 3 won't work, having that many undead of massive size in any large amount will oversaturate the area and cause a negative energy meltdown, tearing apart whatever it was you were building and leaving the whole zone abuzz with red light and bad feelings for at least a decade.
