Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a member of the mercenary company Demons of Randgriz and a graduate from its elite TIER ONE Program. You are now part of the elite, but inexperienced WRAITH TEAM, consisting of you and your fellow classmates from training.

After a grueling year of training and quick battle to get rid of some troublesome pirates harassing Gallia's northern coast, you and Wraith Team have found yourselves transferred to the exotic land of San Salvacion, an entire ocean away from Gallia. You've been brought in to help the beleaguered country suppress the rebels that oppose its rule, as well as counter any possible Erusean aggression from the South.

Unfortunately, the action started much sooner than you thought it would when your base was ambushed literally almost the moment you set foot in it. While the attackers were repulsed, the attack has left you and your squad a bit shaken that presumably poorly armed and organized rebels could strike at the heart of San Salvacion's military power in the south so easily.

Fortunately for you, you and Wraith Team weren't sent out the day after the attack. Instead, the Demons' main force was mobilized and moved out to clear the surrounding jungle. That left the clean up within the base itself up to you and the base personnel. The next two days mainly consisted of you and your team performing backbreaking work in the hot, humid jungle environment.

However, that all changed on the third day. While setting up a sandbag position, you looked up and saw a large convoy of vehicles approaching from the north. However, they didn't bear any markings or emblems that resembled either the Demons or the San Salvacion forces...

"Okay, keep working, Wraiths." Simo says as he spies the convoy approach and stop at the north gate. "I gotta go meet up with Menendez."

"Hey, Edwin." You whisper as you poke your friend in the shoulder. "Hey!"

"What is it?" Edwin sighs, setting down the sandbag he's carrying.

"Do you have any ideas who those guys are?" You ask, pointing to the distant convoy. Now more and more vehicles were showing up, and not just the regular trucks and jeeps. There was seriously heavy duty equipment rolling in.

"Hmmm, I might have some ideas..." Edwin narrows his eyes. "Morgan, let me borrow your binoculars."

"Um, okay." Morgan digs into her pack and hands her set of binoculars to Edwin.

"Hmmm..."

CODEX ENTRY UNLOCKED

Artemis Global Security

Formed at roughly the same time as the Demons of Randgriz, Artemis Global Security fulfills a similar role in that it essentially provides private military services for hire. However, due to its broader range of clients and contracts, Artemis actually eclipses the Demons in both sheer size and resources.

Led by Lyle Rourke, a former Emmerian general, Artemis has prided itself on its ability to get the job done no matter what the cost. It primarily consists of Emmerian war veterans, and most of its equipment is Emmerian in origin as well, which is no surprise since Emmeria and its allies are Artemis' biggest clients.

Unfortunately, Artemis has something of a dark reputation, even among allies. There are countless rumors and stories of Artemis personnel committing human rights violations and war crimes. However these allegations remain unproven. Artemis claims that such stories are only enemy propaganda, while critics point out it's because Artemis leaves no survivors to testify against them. Regardless of what one thinks about them, Artemis has one of the highest mission success rates out of any mercenary unit or private military company.

For those who have a very deep interest in the subject, General Rourke has long had a deep and bitter rivalry with Jager Sturmfuhrer of the Demons of Randgriz, mostly due to his role in ending EWII, which had the side effect of torpedoing a contract with the Federation what would have been worth hundreds of millions of credits. It's been rumored that the two have come to blows more than a few times, though the winners, if such events have ever happened at all, remain unclear.
>>

"Why would you want to hear mere speculation? By it's very nature it's not very reliable information."

"Do it or I'm going to ask you piercing and very uncomfortable questions about why you're not acting like a meany to Sparky anymore."

"FINE! Give me a second here." Edwin grumbles.

You then turn to the Twins who are also looking at the convoy with interest. Falynn is basically listing off all the Emmerian vehicles she's seeing enter the base, while Charlotte squints her eyes at the individual troops milling about, as if trying to size them up.

"Hey, Charlotte, Falynn, do you two know anything about Artemis Global Security?" You ask.

"Never heard of them." Charlotte shakes her head.

"The largest private consumer of Emmerian military equipment." Falynn says simply.

"Okay... did either you ever know of a guy named Rourke?"

"Hmmm..." Charlotte closes her eyes. "Name sounds familiar, but nothing's coming up. Anyways, Fal's the one with the good memory."

"Hmmmmm." Falynn cocks her head to the side. "I recall the name being mentioned quite a lot approximately eight years ago... but I haven't been keeping accurate records that long ago..."

"Huh, okay then." You sigh and turn back to Edwin.

You just nod and do what he says. Best not to antagonize Simo while he's in a foul mood. However, you do catch an apologetic look from Menendez as you and the rest of the Wraiths file off towards the barracks.

"Man, what pissed Simo off this time?" Sparky asks.

"I dunno. Seems like Simo gets pissed off at EVERYTHING." Mary-Kate sighs.

"That's not true!" Morgan pouts."He's just under a lot of pressure, that's all!"

"Oh, I bet you'd want to find a way to relieve some of that pressure, huh?" Bragg give a sloppy grin and nudges Morgan a bit, only to laugh when Morgan turns red and kicks him in the knee. "Just kidding, Morg, just kidding!"

Fortunately, you all followed Tarin and Ramirez's creed to pack light at all times, so you really don't need to move out all that much stuff. In just under 30 minutes, you've all gotten everything packed and are ready to move out. However, the way is blocked by a hulking man in uniform. He peers down at all of you and grins.

"Oh, General Rourke, I presume?" You reach your hand out to shake his. "I'm Lucas Williams! It's a pleasure to meet you!"

You decide to act as polite as you can. Even you could tell when somebody was trying to get a rise out of you, and really the best way to defuse situations like that was to completely ignore the bait and turn the conversational tables on them."

"Ah, well, um..." Rourke blinks as his train of thought is broken by your unexpectedly polite answer, and all he can do is absentmindedly shake your hand.

Fortunately, the other Wraiths catch to what you're doing and quickly file out of the room as you keep Rourke's attention focused on you.

However, Rourke regains his sense quickly enough, and he gives you a piercing glare as his eyes scan over every inch of your face to try and glean any information he can off you.

"Hmmm, those eyes, and that hair... you're that knight's son, aren't you? Williams, was it?"

"Yes, sir." You nod.

"Yes, a good man he was." Rourke nods absentmindedly, as if Dad was just a footnote in his mind. "Well, I won't take up any more of your time. You go off and carry on whatever it is you're doing."

He then FINALLY lets go of your hand and you quickly make your escape and take a deep breath. You could FEEL the hostility flowing out of Rourke's body language. The man obviously loved violence.

"Oh, by the way," You hear Rourke's voice behind you and you freeze, "I heard one of the funniest things today."

"Like what...?" You ask nervously.

You feel Rourke's powerful hand fall on your shoulder and tighten like a vice.

"I'm sorry, you JUST missed them." You say innocently. "Last I saw, they were already leaving the base."

It wasn't like you were lying or anything. You were telling the genuine truth. You were just omitted several key details, is all.

"Hmph. Fine." Rourke says and lets go of your shoulder. "Carry on."

Honestly, you felt he let you go because he didn't want you wasting any more of his time, which was fine by you. You did NOT want to give that man any reason to pursue you. You breath a deep sigh of relief.

"Well, I'm glad that was handled peacefully."

You really, REALLY should've have gotten used to it by now, considering it's been happening for years already, but you nearly jump in the air when you suddenly hear Lucina's voice right next your ear, which was natural because she was already standing next to you. You just never saw or heard her approach, is all.

"Jeez, Lucina, can you please stop doing that?!" You gasp. "You're gonna give me a heart attack one day!"

"What are you talking about?" Lucina blinks. "I stomped up here with all the grace and subtlety of an Imperial tank."

Well, if that was the case, she had a lot more work to do. A LOT more.

"You were watching the whole time?"

"Well, somebody had to keep an eye on you. I don't trust that man." Lucina frowns, her hand unconsciously pawing at her sheathed knife.

"Yeah." You grin at the thought of seeing the entire team trying to hide behind a bush or something.

"Still, I was a bit worried there, though. Rourke wasn't alone."

"He wasn't?" You blink.

"He had two guards tailing him. Very discreet. Very good." Lucina frowns. "The best I would have been able to do as get you away from him."

However, as you say those words, you don't see anybody.

"What do you mean a new base?" You ask.

"Officially, the Demon contingent here is being assigned to reactivate an old border facility about fifty miles south of Vitoze."

"Wait... isn't that literally right on the Erusean border?" You ask.

"That's why it's called a 'border facility', Lucas. Pay attention."

"Sorry, sir."

"Anyways, it's just an ancient firebase the Emmerians abandoned years ago after they built Vitoze. We're supposed to rebuild and reactivate the base as our new base of operations in order to deter further Erusean incursions across the border."

"But you don't think that's the full reason."

"That fuckin' Rourke. He and the base commander are close buddies. I am extremely confident he has something to do with it." Simo scowls. "Just like him to give us the shit assignments."

"So, what about the rest of the Demons?" You ask.

"Well, once we clear enough space for a temporary airfield, the Kestrel can start airdropping supplies for us while we reactivate the base. The rest of the contingent are already headed for it, so we'll probably be the last ones there."

"Uh huh." You nod

"This is dangerous country, Lucas. Rebels could be anywhere. Since you've got a heavy weapon it's imperative we get you on gun duty." Simo says. "Take your pick."

You decide to ride in the truck with the Twins, Mary-Kate and Sparky. It's a bit cramped, since the truck has to accommodate the five of you as well as all the equipment the Demons weren't willing to leave behind in the base. There was a lot of sensitive stuff, mostly Nemo's tools and experimental prototypes, that had to be hauled away. No telling what would happen if that stuff fell into foreign hands. Gallia still had to protect its secrets, after all.

"Lucaaaaaas!" The Twins chime as you clamber into the truck.

"Could've gone to a less crowded truck, you know." Sparky sighs.

"I dunno, I don't mind!" Mary-Kate smiles.

With everybody and everything loaded, the Trombe gives a loud honk to signify that it was time for the convoy to move out. One by one, the trucks pull out of the base as Trombe leads the way. However, other than the rumble of the engines and the squawks and buzzes of the jungle wildlife, the ride is dreadfully silent.

"So, what do you girls think about that Rourke guy?" You ask. You were sort of curious whether they had similar impressions of the man that you did.

"Creepy." Charlotte frowns.

"Yeah, really creepy." Falynn nods in response. "You know, after seeing his face, I think I DO remember him."

"No, really?" Charlotte blinks. "From where?"

"Well, its less his actual face and more of the specific type of scarring he had on it."

"Don't tell me..."

"Dad at some point broke his nose in the past. It's actually quite easy to tell, especially if he uses his right hand."

"Why's that?" You ask.

"That's one hand he wears his wedding ring on." Falynn points out.

"Oh. OH."

"Yeah, I'd understand why your dad would punch that guy." Mary-Kate nods. Didn't exactly give the best first impression.

"What about you, Sparky?" You ask the lancer.

"Hmmmm... I definitely don't recognize him, but Uncle Vinnie might have mentioned him or something..." Sparky frowns. "I just don't remember. There's just this huge chunk of time he never really talks about."

"Huh." You frown. "Well, who knows, maybe it'll come back to you."

Suddenly, the truck screeches to a stop causing all of you to nearly fall over. You wryly notice Mary'-Kate "slip" and she falls face first into Charlotte's lap.

"Whoops, sorry there, Charlotte."

"No big." Charlotte rolls her eyes and grins.

"Simo, what's the hold up?" You ask as you stand up. You then see Trombe parked next to a Gallian Type-40 tank. One of yours. The top hatches on both vehicles were open and you could see Simo in a quick, heated conversation with the tank commander.

"Bad news, Wraiths." Simo announces over the radio. "Honey Badger here reports that there might be rebel activity in this area, and she's waiting here to keep an eye on this sector. We can either wait here until we get an all clear, or we can press on ahead."

"Oh boy, enemies out here? That can't be ominous at all!" Sparky says sarcastically.

The trip overall is rather uneventful. You do get some glimpses of movement in the trees, though, and more often than not Simo ordered several rounds of suppressing fire to be dumped into the trees just to make sure, and to let any rebels planning an ambush know that you had a lot of firepower at your disposal. However, because of your show of force, or maybe because there were never any rebels present in the first place, you reach the old firebase without incident. An hour later you Honey Badger rolls on in.

With darkness closing in, everybody merely circles their available vehicles into a circular defensive formation for the night. Like the trip, it passes without incident, without so much as even a burst of sporadic gunfire.

The next morning, however, is a flurry of activity. After having been left to the mercy of the jungle for who knows how many years, the firebase was literally wiped off the face of the earth, the only proof of its existence being a few undergrowth choked and crumbling bunkers. This was going to be less a reactivation than a full rebuilding effort.

On the other hand, there was a nearby town just down the hill. It would have be cleared of potential rebel activity one way or another. You couldn't afford to have a security risk so close.

Or, you could go and patrol the surrounding jungle to sniff out any potential rebel patrols or ambushes.

You decide to stay back in the base in order to better fortify the defenses. This meant lots and lots of digging and sandbags. You had a full engineering detachment with your force needed to do some heavy construction work, but even they were being stretched to their limits and needed all the assistance they could get.

"Lucas! H-hey Lucas!" You see Falynn waving at you.

"Hey Falynn, what do you need?" You ask.

"W-well." Falynn frowns. "There's a lot of work to do but I'm not sure where to start..."

"Well, what's on the list?" You ask.

"Well, we can either work on setting up the air field, the communications bunker, or the perimeter defenses." Falynn says. "O-once we decide I can get Charlotte and Lucina to help."

Well, with Falynn's inherent expertise, you're pretty sure she'd be able to do exceptional work on wherever she ended up, so it was a matter of what you thought would be the most important.

For the rest of the day, Falynn goes up and down the perimeter planning out and surveying the best areas to lay down the base perimeter while Lucina points out the areas the enemy would most likely try to attack from. Meanwhile, you and Charlotte manage to badger the other engineers into giving Falynn priority for building materials. After a few days, the fruits of your labor finally begin to take shape in the form of a large and strong reinforced concrete wall ringing the entire perimeter, and dotted with numbers bunkers, pillboxes, and gun emplacements. The defense was so impregnable and well layered that everybody soon just started calling the new firebase the Bastion.

"Thanks a lot for helping me." Falynn says as you flop down in the shade to take a break. "I'm not sure I could've done this without you."

Well, you don't want to say too much, more for Falynn's sake than yours. After all she was pretty easy to embarrass and get flustered, at least much easier than her sister. Plus you didn't want to give Bragg any wrong ideas, either, considering not even you were sure how you felt about her yet.

"Yeah well, that's because we've been friends since forever." You say simply.

"Hah, yeah, whatever you say." Bragg shrugs.

By this point, you've reached the Bastion's western gate, which led directly to the town of Dorado at the foot of the hill. You had a feeling that was going to be your next destination.

"Okay, you brought Lucas. Good." Simo nods. You see that in addition to him, Charlotte, Mary-Kate, and Lucina are present. You are acutely aware that these were the types of teammates who would be best suited for close quarters combat. Morgan and Runaround were present, as well.

"Okay, Wraiths." Simo begins. "With most of our men busy setting up the base, we've only really had Predator and Metal Teams out in the field. Predator Team so far has been sweeping the jungles for signs of rebels. The good news is that they haven't run into any rebels yet, but the bad news is that there's evidence that they're definitely here. Up till now, Metal Team has been keeping an eye on Dorado, but we've got no choice but retask them to assist Predator. That means it's up to us to clear out any rebel influence in the town once and for all."

"I don't like the sound of that." Charlotte frowns. "I thought we were supposed to be supporting the civilians?"

"Not if they're secretly aiding the enemy, and it is highly likely they are."

"Wait, 'likely'? You don't even know for sure?" Mary-kate joins in.

"Look, we go in and we neutralize the threat. Whether that means we bust down every door, burn down the whole village or even ask them nicely, we've got to get it done. We can't afford to give the rebels an staging point so close to the Bastion.

With their activities, they must have done some questionable things to the villages, especially so close to the border.

Everybody just stares at you like you've suddenly grown a pair of wings and are about to fly away. Charlotte is actively cracking up.

"I mean, look at it this way. I'm sure the villagers have had their own share of harassment at the hands of the rebels. If we show them that we're better people than the rebels, they might side with us."

"Or, they could just shoot you, capture you, or worse." Morgan points out.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Morgan." You sigh.

"Okay. Okay. Let me think on this." Simo closes his eyes. "Okay, here's how it'll go, then. Lucas goes in to negotiate with the villagers while the rest of us hang back on the outskirts of town. We don't want to stay hidden, though. We WANT them to see us so they know who's got the upper hand. I'll call in some favors to see if we can't get some additional armor down here, as well. She'd be most useful in the event we get attacked. Lucina is for the rescue team.

Is it time to go full PTSD?

Lucina has had our back longer than anyone.

"There's nobody I'd trust to watch my back than Lucina." You say.

"Okay." Simo nods. "Gear up and get prepped. I'll see if we can't round up some reinforcements and we'll be going down in thirty."

You nod and look down on the village of Dorado. From up here, the people looked innocent and nice enough. What was the worst that could happen?

"I hope you know what you're doing." Lucina frowns. "This is highly dangerous."

"Well, it beats breaking into their houses and chasing them out." You shrug. "That's not what Demons do."

"That true." Lucina nods.

"And plus it'll be a great opportunity to show you more on how 'peaceful resolution' works."

"I guess you're right about that too." Lucina laughs.

You laugh along with her, but deep down inside, you wonder whether or not you just signed your own, and even worse, Lucina's death warrants.

>And that's it for tonight! Tune in Saturday night 7-8pm PST to see what happens next!

Whoever kills her is beyond fucked.

Actually, Lara would be a better fit, but I guess Lucina could work as well...
>>
What i want to happen is they try to negotiate peacefully, one or two villagers sabotage the negotiation, lucina is hurt and unable to move, lucas loses his control he was constantly working for years to keep, he black out and goes on to single-handedly murdering dozens of villagers in minutes before the back-up comes.
thats how you negotiate lucina. you better take some notes.
