You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Luciana, the fourth princess of the kindom of Marconetti, has arrived at the castle on official business. Though she's Princess Marianne's best friend, Luciana's personality is what you'd actually expect from a princess! Too bad her demeanor hasn't rubbed off on Marianne at all.

After greeting Luciana and putting up with ignoring Monique, you and the Princess have resumed her usual schedule of classes.

>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

>"...Reinhold," he says to you as you're about to leave the room, "that Gilbeault kid didn't try anything today, did he?"

"Pretty much the same thing as yesterday," you reply. "He insisted on escorting Princess Luciana to the King, and provoked Nicolette... Princess Luciana defused the situation though, so nothing really came of it."
"...I see," Sir Gregory says, placing his hand on his chin. "As long as he didn't run his mouth again, I suppose I can ignore it."

Your conversation over, you follow Princess Marianne to her next class, following her into a room where you are met by an old butler, so old that he makes Arnaud seem like a child in comparison. Remembering the other day, you realize that this is the Princess's etiquette class.

Etiquette is important, especially considering our position. Knowing how not to offend people is useful. As is not looking out of place when we're at some formal event.

Try and pay attention. The castle with the tutors is as safe as it gets, so we might as well learn something.

The old butler's lecture on the perils of napkin placement, what kind of flower to wear at what occasion, the proper form for laughing in a public setting, and several other minutae of politenesss is mindnumbingly boring, but somehow you are able to force yourself to pay attention to the entire thing. Now you feel like a true gentleman!

...not really, the entire thing just came off as pointlessly obsessive.

Fortunately, the lecture ends before you end up in a comatose state, and the Princess motions for you to follow her to her next destination, the courtyard. Per usual, you open the door to the courtyard to make sure it's safe and then hold the door for her before going in yourself.

As she takes her seat, you notice her expression... she doesn't seem to be in her usual foul mood.

Deciding to try and preserve the Princess's seemingly good mood, you take your seat and wait quietly. Princess Marianne also says nothing, instead gazing at the freshly tended garden with a faint smile on her face. Seeing her like this, one would never expect her usual temperament to be so... unpleasant.

After a few minutes of waiting, Arnaud enters the courtyard, once again effortlessly balancing an entire teaset on one hand as if he's showing off his butlerly skill.

"Here's your afternoon tea, Princess," he says as he places a cup down on the table and fills it with tea, then doing the same for you. "I must say, a smile suits you best."
"...thank you, Arnaud," the Princess replies, not minding his comment.

"Thanks, Arnaud," you say as you take a sip of tea.
"I'm always happy to serve," Arnaud replies with a bow. "As always, if either of you needs anything, all you have to do is call." he says, then turns around and leaves the courtyard.

With Arnaud gone, the courtyard is once again silent. Not even the sound of you sipping your tea is heard, as you remembered from that horribly boring lecture that audibly drinking is Impolite. Good job!

The rest of the teatime is spent peacefully, with both of you admiring the garden while drinking your tea. But sadly, your pleasant time comes to an end when the Princess finishes off the contents of the teapot and rises from her seat.

"Let's go," she says as she motions for you to follow her. "My next class is Foreign Literature. The last time I had it was before you arrived here, so do try not to get lost."
"Will do, Princess," you reply with a slight bow.

As you exit the courtyard, hear footsteps quickly approaching you. Following the source of the sound, you see...

"Melanie?" the Princess says, surprised.

>let the Princess do the talking

"Good afternoon, Princess," Melanie says, bowing deeply.
"You seem to be in a rush, is something wrong?" the Princess replies, a bit concerned.
"Yes... please excuse me for a moment," she says as she takes a few deep breaths. "I've gotten word that Princess Luciana has finished her meeting with the King, and would like to see you now. I thought that you'd like to know about that as soon as possible, so I ran all the way here."
"Eh?" the Princess replies, a surprised look on her face. "They're already finished?"
"Yes, it seems that their meeting was a short one. Anyways, she's waiting for you in the greeting room. I will inform your other tutors of the change in plans, so you don't need to concern yourself with that."
"...thank you, Melanie."
"I'm just doing my duty, Princess."

With that, Melanie does a deep bow and hurries off to her next destination. The Princess glances at you and then motions for you to follow, then leads you at a brisk pace through the labyrinthine halls of the castle. Just as you think that you've finally reached an area that you actually recognize, you spot Sylvie.

And Sir Vincent.

Who is holding a rather large stack of books.

"Hm?" Sylvie says as she notices you approaching. "Um, good afternoon, Princess! Reinhold!" sylvie says to the two of you, a smile on her face.
"Ah, Princess Marianne!" Sir Vincent says, his face peeking over the top of the stack of books that he's holding. "And Reinhold, it's nice to see you again! How are you handling your new job? Not too much trouble, I take it?"

"Thanks to everyone who's been helping me out, not at all," you say, smiling.
"Hahaha, glad to hear it!" Sir Vincent replies.
"Also," you say as you lean in, "I have hot running water. -In- my room!" you say in a hushed tone.

Sir Vincent lets out a hearty laugh and nudges you in the arm with his elbow, nearly knocking you over. "Sure is a far cry from the Army's barracks, eh?"
"It really is," you say as you try and rub the pain out of your arm.
"...well, I suppose I should let you two get back to whatever you were doing. Gotta get these books back to the library for Sylvie here, too. See you later!" Sir Vincent says, nodding to the two of you.
"Um, goodbye, Princess! You too, Reinhold!" Sylvie says as she bows nervously.
"It's nice to see that the two of you are in good spirits. Have a nice day," the Princess replies.
"Uh, yeah. See you later," you join in.

After parting ways with Sylvie and Sir vincent, you and Princess Marianne resume your speedy walking pace. After you pass through a few more hallways, you reach a familiar door... you recognize it as the one leading to the room where you were first introduced to the Princess.

"...so this is the greeting room, huh," you say.
"Of course it is," the Princess replies with a sigh. "Anyways, let's enter."

You open the door for her and then follow her inside... and are met with Princess Luciana sitting happily at a table, sipping tea while her bodyguard Takamaru stands silently.

"Marianne! It's great that you were able to ditch your classes to see me!" she says with a beaming smile.

Well, when the premise of the game is that you're playing in a restrictive role, you can't really be surprised when people act in a restricted manner. When asked "what to do" you can't be surprised when people say "our job".... It keeps the head attached to the shoulders.
>>
>>27359657

Yeah, but which restrictive role:
> protagonist of a harem anime
> secret wielder of an ancient sword who is totally broing it up with ancient old elementals going icogeveryone-knows butlers
> the lapguard of a princess who walks around in the castle and has a lot of tea
> Conan waiting for his chance to steal the crown jewels, seduce the princess and then skedaddle
>>
>>27359705

Those others seem pretty proactive to me, but the premise to this one is spending almost every waking moment under the watchful eye of a boss that doesn't particularly like us.

The only other quest I'm really paying attention to right now is the Succubus Lord quest, so maybe my view is a little skewed, but with that one people are always pushing, and fighting, for whatever pet ideas they want to be going with.

"Just doing my duty, Princess," you say with a bow. "...though it certainly helps when said duty is pleasant."
"Oh my, Marianne! You certainly know how to pick them!" Luciana says, giggling.
"...Father is the one who picked him, not me," Princess Marianne replies with a sigh. "...so, why did your meeting with him take so little time?" she asks.
"Ah... well, he was simply quick to come to a decision. Though did it took so long to come all the way out here, I think I'll stay an extra day or two!" Luciana replies, smiling.
"I certainly won't complain about that... but would you mind telling me what exactly you were speaking with Father about?" Princess Marianne asks.

Upon hearing Marianne's question, Luciana lets out a small sigh, and then takes a sip of tea.

"You always were the serious one... though I suppose you'll hear about it anyways," she says, frowning slightly.
"...was it concerning something bad?" Marianne asks, a concerned expression on her face.
"Hm... bad for me, I guess? Though it's probably good on your side..." Luciana replies as she gazes out of the window.
"I don't really understand..."
"Aah!" Luciana shouts as she claps her hands together. "Enough playing! It's time for Serious Luciana!"

This little display startles you a bit, though both Takamaru and Princess Marianne seem unbothered... maybe she does this kind of thing frequently?

"Alright! The entire point of my trip to Granache was Father's plan to unite our two countries!" Luciana says.
"...he's not trying to pass your older brother off onto me again, is he?" Marianne replies, having returned to her usual expression.
"Oh no, Lorenzo got married off last year."
"I see."
"No, his plan this time was to offer -my- hand in marriage to your father!" Luciana says, giggling.
"...WHAT."

Without any warning, Princess Marianne slaps her hands on the table and stands up.

That's a job description. It's not a role. The role is what we make of it, it is not restricted by the fact that our character has the JOB of a royal guard, because at any point we could choose to just walk away and, say, become a Robin Hood type or try to assassinate the king or seduce the princess or get kicked out of the army because we want to go out to sea.
Which would be a shame for OP, but still. Don't confuse jobs and roles.

"Of all of the... what in the world is your father thi-... and you went along with this!?" she shouts.
"Weeell... unlike you, all I am to my father is a useful diplomatic tool. And even if Father was the type to allow for a female heir, I'm too far down the line of succession to ever have a shot at the throne," Luciana says with a long sigh. "As it is, the best I can hope for is that he marries me off to someone who I'd actually like."
"...and that 'someone who you'd like' is my father," Marianne replies with a cold look on her face.
"Well, he is quite the dashing sort... though my preference is a younger type like Mr. Reinhold here, I can't say that I don't find your father to be quite the catch," Luciana says, winking at you.
"So you want to marry my father," Marianne replies.
"But then I'd be your new mother! Wouldn't that just be lovely~?" Luciana says, giggling.

"This isn't funny!" Marianne shouts, hitting the table once more for emphasis.
"Now, now... calm down," Luciana replies, her expression becoming more serious. "Anyways, my father was thinking about how since your father never remarried after the untimely passing of your mother, the only heir that he'd ever have is you, a female."
"...and so he offered you as a way for him to have some male heirs for the throne," Marianne replies.
"Yes, that was his reasoning. And since I'm his oldest unmarried daughter, I was chosen for the job."

It's a game about dysfunctional families fighting each other and other families for power, glory and God in medieval Europe. Sooner or later you will feel the temptation to just have one of your kids killed because they're NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Every time your current king dies, everything goes into collapse mode and you'll be scrambling to keep your realm together, dukes will be rebelling to the right and your friendly neighbouring kingdoms will pick just those moments to capture some territory from one of your ex-vassals so that they don't have to declare war on you and make it nigh impossible to get it back again. A lot of or your time is taken by trying to find people with really good genes and the right religion to marry into your family so that your heirs don't end up drooling onto the throne's armrest, then dealing with the consequences when the fuckers decide to try to usurp your throne so that your designated heir doesn't get it.

"...why in the world did you say that in such a manner that would cause me to think that he actually accepted your offer?" Marianne says, staring coldly at Luciana.
"Weeeeellll, you see..." Luciana clasps her hands together. "While it's always fun to tease boys, a super serious person like you gives the absolute best reactions!" she says, giggling. "Mr. Reinhold, isn't she just wonderful?"

Completely unprepared to be thrown into the conversation, you blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.

"She's certainly the most wonderful princess I have ever had the honor of guarding," you say with a weak smile.

You then look over at Princess Marianne, expecting to be met with a death-glare... but all she does in response is place her hand over her face and sigh deeply.

"Luciana, I forgot how... exhausting you can be," she says.
"But that's why you love me~"
"...I wonder about that sometimes. Anyways, do you think that your father will take your failure badly?" Marianne asks, getting back to business.
"Hm? Oh, he was completely expecting that I be turned down," Luciana replies. "But he said that there was no harm in trying, so I got to take a trip here," she says, shrugging.
"...he already knew..."
"Don't forget, my father has known your father since he was a baby. Anyways, he had another plan in place, too."
"Oh?"
"Yup! You see, my little brother Enrico has a birthday coming up, and he told me to invite all of you!" Luciana says, a wide smile on her face. "Of course, it's pretty much a ploy to set the two of you up!"
"...of course it is," Marianne repies, sighing once again.
"So, will you come? It'd be nice to have you visit me for a change..."
"...though I dislike overly formal occasions, I suppose it would be nice to be able to spend more time with you."
"Oh, Marianne! You're simply the best!"

Princess Luciana hops out of her seat and skips around the table, then hugs Marianne as hard as she can.

"...so exhausting," Marianne replies, returning the hug.

The two princess then begin talking about various things, leaving you to your own devices.

While the princesses go on about what books they're reading and what pastry is worthy of being called the king of pastries, you stand guard, scanning the room for any potential threat. Fortunately, it seems to be as secure as it was the last time you were here.

As look around, you end up meeting eyes with Takamaru, who nods to you in acknowledgement. Taking that as a sign that he's not unfriendly (and since you don't really have anything better to do), you decide to try talking to him for a bit.

"So, um... Takamaru, was it?" you ask.
"Yes. That is my name," he replies.
"So, how long have you been Princess Luciana's bodyguard?"
"Two months. I have four months left in my shift. And you?"
"I actually just started the other day."
"I see. So you still have six months left in your shift."
"Eh?" you reply, a bit confused. "No, I'm pretty sure that my post is a permanent one. Provided that I don't screw up somehow, anyways."
"...so this country does not have the same policies as Marconetti. I see. Though Princess Luciana is a bit... vexing, mine is a comfortable post. You are lucky that you will not have to give up yours."
"Yeah, I guess," you reply. "So, um... do you have any hobbies?" you ask.
"Back home, I liked to fish. It is quite relaxing." Takamaru replies, sighing a bit.

Though for you, the idea of "fishing" brings up memories of beaten down old drunken fishermen, you try to be as polite as possible.

"I... see," you reply.
"I have not had the time to do so lately, though," Takamaru says, looking over the room before turning back to you. "And do you have any hobbies?" he asks you.
"I do a bit of sketching," you say.
"Hm," Takamaru replies, his expression saying nothing about what he thinks of your response.

"I have not had the time to do so lately, however," Takamaru says, looking over the room before turning back to you. "And do you have any hobbies?" he asks you.
"I do a bit of sketching," you say.
"Hm," Takamaru replies, his expression saying nothing about what he thinks of your response.

"Umm... would you be up to a bit of sparring later?" you ask him. "You have an interesting sword there, and I'm kind of curious about what kind of style would develop around one like that."
"Hm. That would be nice, but I must decline. I am to guard the Princess at all times until her return home, so I will not have any time to spare," he says, a tinge of disappointment in his voice.

The two of you then resume your watch, as Luciana and Marianne continue talking.

And talking.

And talking.

Eventually you can see the sun setting in the sky, which finally pulls Princess Marianne's attention away from her conversation.

"...oh my, it's already this late?" she says, looking out of the window.
"Ehehe, I guess we have been talking for a while," Luciana replies, smiling.
"Sorry Luciana, but I think I'll call it a night. I have some reading to do before I go to sleep."
"Aww, you're the same stick-in-the-mud as ever, I see..." Luciana says, pouting. "But that's one of the reasons I love you so~"

Luciana hugs Marianne once again, and then turns to you.

"You take good care of Marianne now, Mr. Reinhold! I won't forgive you if you get careless and allow something horrible to happen like a bird pooping on her!" she says, playfully stiking her tongue out at you.

that combined with food and exercise.

Good night, lad
>>
>>27360991

We're missing two things right off the bat, our nightly training sessions, and FOOD! These are two things not to be taken lightly and not to be neglected. We can do whatever else we want to do after we take care of these two!
>>
>>27361037
I wasn't disagreeing, just saying that he's still absurdly strong. God Hand alone beats out the far majority of Servants by virtue of being nearly unstoppable.

1. Find Nicolette and Slyvie
2. Go to the Kitchen
3. CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME
>>
>>27360991
See if Nicolette is around, if she is we can get dinner together, maybe with Sylvie as well if she's free.

Then Nicolette can pay off her side of the debt and we can draw some pictures.

damn it! i just get up as this thread dies. Archelon. are you a night owl or what?

Lets get some new gear and make a step towards improving ourselves:
Inquire to Arnaud about the following:

Ask Arnaud about any one-handed, portable & concealable ranged weapons that are lethal, like a kind of slingshot pistol or wand with precharged spells. Otherwise...
Coat/vest: Same enchantments as below if possible, slots for throwing knives. Throwing knives.

Armor: Should generally be made to be inoccuous/unassuming. If possible: weight, sturdiness and magic resistance enchantments.
x2 Wrist Sheath; Knives (Enchanted for being lightweight, sturdy), one should be made for parrying.
Sword Enchantments: Lightweight, sturdiness, magic resistance.

Ask him about any other enchantments that could be useful for our equipment and equipment to be. Inquire to him about the following magic:
>Magic that enhances our physical abilities, like being able to flash step even.
>Resisting, diseplling, countering and detecting magic.
>Magic to go with swordsmanship.
>Protection/stealth magic, emphasis on being able to protect the Princess.

Finally, we should ask to train with him since he's apparently a master swordsman. Nicolette is a polearms user and vincent's style probably won't mesh with our own. So Arnaud would be best in teaching us some things. He'd also probably know any good spells and tricks to combat people like mages, and probably have the generational experience to know what's needed in a bodyguard.

>>
>>27365180
This would be good.

Where does the King usually hang out? We never see him.

Speaking of which, when does the Princess eat dinner? I noticed she eats breakfast separate from her dad.
>>
>>27365180
This looks to be a good list of improvements to make, I approve of the protection focus.
>>
>>27361558

Maybe he's in different timezone.
>>
>>27365929
The earliest in the day he could have possible started the thread was 6 PM if he was on some island right before the international dateline. given his apparent skill and familiarity with the English language it's more likely that he was somewhere in the continental US, which means the thread started at the earliest at 10 PM.

He's a night owl.
>>
>>27366202
Or, he's Filipino.

What if post-F/SN Emiya/young Archer was the Princess's bodyguard?
>>
>>27366371
I did mention skill and familiarity with the English language, Pinoy do not tend to do well with it as the only ones they see who do speak it properly are navy.
>>
>>27367259
You are wrong.
>>
>>27367259
I'm not so sure about that. On the net at least, I've come across several fluent speakers and writers.
>>
>>27366514
Post-Fate, Post-UBW, or Post-HF/HA Shirou?
>>
>>27367411
Because people who have no reason to learn a language do spectacularly at it, right.

>>27367457
as have I, and I have also been able to tell in every instance that they were not native speakers, I'm not saying they can't learn it, even fluently, I'm saying that due to the lack of familiarity it tends to be noticeably rough around the edges.
>>
>>27367493
EMIYA before he became a CG. Early 20s instead of the late 20s/early 30s EMIYA is. So most likely Fate, less likely MoS HF. More experienced/skilled than ordinary F/SN Fate Shirou but he's probably still not proficient with projecting NPs or using UBW at that point.
>>
>>27367565
Nah. It can't be Fate because of the RN ending. EMIYA can't ever get to Avalon, while post-Fate Shirou gets there eventually.
>>
>>27367636
>>EMIYA can't ever get to Avalon, while post-Fate Shirou gets there eventually.
WoG hasn't said anything, so I wouldn't rule it out with it being Nasu.
>>Nah. It can't be Fate because of the RN ending.
Nasu has had Shirou is most likely to become EMIYA in Fate of all 3 routes. Whether RN happens or not doesn't matter because the nasuverse is a multiverse, and the ToH exists outside time/space.

Young EMIYA, we know he had to work for his skills for at least 10 years, going off the years Shirou would've needed to use that arm. So he'd probably be more skilled with a few cool tricks, but ultimately wouldn't be OP or anything near Servant-tier.
>>
>>27366514
Screw that.

What if Reinhold was suddenly gifted with the music skill of John Coltrane? Jazz can be replicated after all, in this time period.
>>
>>27368465
But they don't have saxophones. It's just not the same without them.

>>27367787
Or it's just a 4th route that was never expounded upon.
>>
>>27368562
If they got llamas, maybe they have saxophones. it doesn't need high tech to make after all.
>>
>>27368647
They're rather hard to make. I wouldn't expect any key mechanisms more complicated than a trumpet.
>>
>>27368720
But they got magic.
>>
>>27368752
Magic does not imply better manufacturing techniques
>>
>>27368780
It can, since its magic!
>>
>>27368948
With better manufacturing techniques, instruments are definitely not the first thing to improve. They don't even have crossbows.
>>
>>27368948
Most of the magic we've heard of so far doesn't sound very delicate at all. In fact, it sounds anything but. There could be some precision work, of course, but making an instrument sounds like it might be a bit intensive.
>>
>>27368562
There would be a major loss from that, but jazz can still be done without it.

>>27369682
Depends on how animu he gets, since fighting unarmed is pretty fucking stupid when the other guy has armor and a sword or worse.

If he truly masters it, then he'd surpass the librarian in being a sneaky fuck. Probably call him out every time he's trying to sneak up on them.

Not when you can kick skyscrapers into the air, and take down 60ft mechs with a *scarf*.
>>
Why not combine all 3 ideas?

Reinhold gets struck by lightning. When he wakes up, he is now a master jazz musician. He is also a ninja who can Sword harder than anyone else because he is a Sword.
