You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Luciana, the fourth princess of the kindom of Marconetti, has arrived at the castle on official business. Though she's Princess Marianne's best friend, Luciana's personality is what you'd actually expect from a princess! Too bad her demeanor hasn't rubbed off on Marianne at all.

It turns out that Luciana's father offered her hand in marriage to the King, as a plot to unite their two countries. But much to Marianne's relief, the offer was declined.

>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

Morning!

You sit on your bed and look out the window... as usual, you woke up just before dawn. Actually feeling totally rested, you get up, bathe, and get dressed.

Remembering that Princess Luciana is still here in Granache, you figure that today is most likely going to be rather eventful... but you still have a few hours before your day is dominated by the whims of two princesses. Might as well make the best of it!

>where do you go?

I miss being a snake. At least snakes don't spread disease and taint food stores.

Finish and return the map?
>>

Try to find someone of authority and see if we can get some backup if the princesses are planning to head out today.
Also, see if we can get a maid to give us the princess's schedule at least a day in advance.

Finish that map! Then go find Sylvie and see what she's doing.

Don't worry, one day we'll advance to Dog!

Guys I've been thinking and while I do like the idea of maybe dating of the other girls I don't think we should.

probably more of the same. they KNOW we are good. it's like, we are full PC class, and they are all NPC class.

I think we decided on a basket-hilted saber. Not sure, though.

But the basket-hilted BROADSWORD gives us options, if we're a big enough dude to use it as a rapier. We can fence, hack someone's shoulder from its fucking socket, cleave skulls, and use the hilt as a fucking boxing glove to deal damage to noses and ears.

We need to seriously consider it.

Remembering that you weren't able to finish copying the castle map last night, you decide to do so right now while you have the time. You take the map from your desk drawer and unfold it just enough so that the section that you have yet to copy is showing, take out your sketchbook and a pencil, and get to work.

After maybe twenty minutes, you are finally done! You are now the proud owner of a copy of the castle's plans!

...well, an amateurishly done copy, but it's good enough for your purposes. Satisfied with your work, you fold the map back up and put both it and your sketched copy in the breast pocket of your jacket.

>where do you go now?

Pretty sure you idots argued about it for a day until the The OP said it was a generic broadsword.
>>
>>27391820

I'm not trying to start another argument, I'm just saying, the basket-hilted Something or Other is a viable option. It fits with the one handed-sword route we use, it provides options in a brawl in the streets OR a straight up battle, and if we polish the steel of the hilt, it'll look pretty pimptastic, too.
>>
>>27391897

Deciding not to waste any time, you decide to finally give Gerhard back his map. Heading downstairs and through the various hallways of the castle, you pass by several maids and guards on the way to the library.

As you walk inside, you're met with the smell of old paper... and expecting the usual, you brace yourself for Gerhard's sudden appearance.

"Oh, Reinhold! I wasn't expecting to see you here this early!"

...it wasn't even a sudden appearance this time, he seems to have been standing next to you since the moment you entered the library. Trying to act like you weren't startled, you turn to him.

"Ah, thank you! I do hope that you found it helpful," Gerhard replies as you hand him the map.
"It was, thanks. I also made myself a copy so that I wouldn't have to hold on to yours for too long," you reply.
"Ah, that is a good idea," he replies, clasping his hands together. "Though I suppose I should warn you against leaving it unattended, as it would be quite a bit of trouble if some ne'er-do-well were to get their hands on it."
"...I'll keep that in mind," you say as you doublecheck that your copy is still in your pocket.
"I would also suggest that you burn it once you feel that you've memorized the castle's layout, though I suppose that is up to you. The only reason I hang onto mine is because it was a gift from the King, you see..."

"...anyways, I have a bit of preparation to do for later today, but I'd be happy to help you out if there was anything else you needed?" Gerard says to you.
"Ah... that's about it for now," you reply, remembering that you still have two books that you borrowed from him in your room. "Though I would like to learn how you do that disappearing trick... but I guess that'll have to wait."

Since you'd like very much to avoid making the Princess mad at you by being late, you decide to make your way to thw dining hall. As you make your way there, you notice that there's a lot more maids and butlers around than usual... probably because they want to keep the place looking nice for the current visitor.

You make it to the dining hall before long, and there you see... Princess Luciana and Takamaru, standing right by where you usually are.

"Oh, Mr. Reinhold! Good morning! I heard from that one maid with the glasses that this is where you usually meet Marianne for breakfast, so I thought that I'd do the same!" she says to you, a wam smile on her face.

>>
>>27393252
Just because classical portraiture was done nude doesn't mean that A it was done that way in this setting and B it is done in this time period

And before you bring up Sylvie she is pretty implied to be misunderstanding things quite a bit given how Nicolette reacted
>>
>>27393330
>>27393351

ok then how about asking if we can sketch takamaru.
>>
>>27393315
>>27393328
In the medievil-ish period we're occupying there isn't really "art for pleasure." While hobbies certainly exist, being an artist wasn't something a person really dabbled with - either they are, or they aren't.

To that end classical portraiture was a very intimate experience done between, usually an older, accomplished male, and his subject(s). Haven't any of you taken an art history class or even, you know, been to a museum?

Christ, man. It's not the drawing itself, but that shows an undue amount of curiosity and forwardness that is not acceptable, it's the process. It's unacceptable.

>>27393330

Nicolette was pretty chill with us drawing her
>>
>>27393411
Now we can't even draw the fine eastern gentlemen because we are afraid of looking gay in this time period?
>>
>>27393378
The period is irrelevant when the setting is not earth history

Unless Archelon decides that is the done thing in this world then who knows, as far as we have seen in the town it is not stereotypical medieval life so assuming anything is ridiculous
>>
>>27393460
Do you know what a princess is? Do you know what a paranoid king is? We are going to lose our nuts!
>>
>>27393464
Homosex still isn't really accepted. So, yeah, it's actually sort of a concern. If you want to discuss drawing, or sketching, or art, that's cool - that shows actual depth and interaction with the setting. But you can't just go around going "LOL CAN I SKETCH YOU XD i am so uber kawaii and exceltn lol," because that's not how the fucking process was done. It's seen as flirtatious because they're largely nudes and it assumes a huge amount of trust and intimacy between us and the subject to be drawn.

"Good morning, Princess Luciana. Takamaru," you say with a bow. "I do meet the Princess down here, though it might be a while before she arrives."
"Oh? Well, that's not really a big deal. I get to spend time with a handsome gentleman like you while I wait!" Luciana replies, giggling.
"Uh... thanks," you reply, a bit nervous.
"Sooo... this is where you meet up with Marianne, and then you spend the rest of the day with her?" she asks.
"Yeah, until she heads to her room for the night."
"I see. You don't seem to be very aggravated at the prospect of doing so, so I suppose you must be a rather patient sort. Back when Sir Gregory was guarding Marianne, I got -so many- letters from her, consisting entirely of various complaints about him," she says to you, closing her eyes. "'He's so crude, he's so ill-tempered, I wish I could strike him but he'd probably blow up the castle if I did...'"
"Uh... wow," you reply, wide-eyed with surprise.
"Yes, well that's what happens when you force two high-strung people to be around each other for too long," she says, sighing. "Anyways, she seems to be pretty happy with you!"
"I don't know about that, but at least she doesn't seem to hate me," you reply.

Just then, you hear footsteps aproaching... speak of the devil.

"Ah, so you're on time once again. It's nice that y-... Luciana? What are you doing down here, I hadn't sent for you yet," Princess Marianne says, unable to hide her surprise.
"Oh, that particularly cute maid with the glasses told me that you meet Mr. Reinhold down here every morning, so I decided to do the same," Luciana replies, grinning.
"...as long as he didn't do anything rude, I suppose that's not -too- much of a problem," Marianne says, taking a deep sigh.

"Only your timely arrival prevented me from regressing into a gibbering barbarian," you say with a deep bow.

As usual, your morning comment elicits giggling from the maids, though today seems to have gotten more than usual. Princess Marianne doesn't even respond, only putting her hand on her face and letting out a long sigh.

And then you turn to Luciana... who had a huge smile on her face.

"Oh... oh goodness!" she says, going her best not to break down laughing. "Marianne, he's simply wonderful! Would you like to trade bodyguards, by chance? Handsome and witty, that's a rare combination!"
"Don't tempt me, Luciana," Marianne replies, sighing again. "Anyways, all of this morning foolishness is making me hungry."

without another word, Princess Marianne and her maids walk past all of you and head to the table. You hurry behind her, and Luciana and Takamaru follow as well. You take your usual seat at the table beside Marianne, with Luciana taking the seat on the other side and Takamaru sitting next to her.

"So, Marianne... has your uncle been around lately?" Luciana asks. "I'm sure that Father would be satisfied to marry me off to him, seeing as how your father turned me down..." Luciana says, a sly smile on her face.

Waaait, what? The Princess has an uncle? Though this certainly comes as a bit of surprise, you decide not to say anything.

"...no, he hasn't been seen in the country since my fifth birthday," Princess Marianne replies. "He has no interest in royal matters anyways, that's why he abandoned his duties as Prince to go and run around as an adventurer," she says with a sigh.
"Aw, that's a shame," Luciana replies, pouting. "From what little I remember of him, he was ruggedly handsome... and quite strong, to boot."
"Yes, well he's probably off right now picking a fight with a Dragon or futilely searching for a Sealed King or whatever it is that adventurers do."
"That certainly is the life," Luciana says, clasping her hands together. "Travelling as you please, slaying the wicked, and exploring the world... it's a far more satisfying way to live than putting up with court intrigue. Don't you agree, Mr. Reinhold?"

"I saw my share of the world in the army," you say. "Right now, I'm just happy to have such a comfortable position here in the castle."
"Aww, you're just saying that to be nice," Luciana replies, pouting. "But I suppose as a bodyguard, you're not directly exposed to how... -annoying- it is to put up with politics. And there's not much in the area of court intrigue over here since the King keeps his friends close, so..."
"Yes, it's a far cry from what you've told me of Marconetti's court life," Marianne replies.
"Oh, you'd hate it. Utterly," Luciana replies, her expression shifting to a serious one. "Fortunately, I'm not in the center of it all, what with being as far down as I am in the line of succession," she says with an exasperated sigh. "But yeah, it's quite horrible and sometimes I just want to run away from it all, but I'm sure that my father would send an army after me if I did so."

Just as Luciana finishes her complaining, a butler approaches the table with a dining cart. Several others then join him in taking the trays off the cart and placing them in front of you. After they finish, they bow to you all and hurry away as quickly as they came.

Today's breakfast? Pancakes! Upon seeing the food before her, a huge smile forms on Luciana's face. Takamaru, on the other hand, stares at his food as if it's the strangest thing ever.

"Ooooh, Pancakes!" Luciana says, quickly snatching up her fork and knife to get ready to eat.

"Trust me, Takamaru. They're wonderful," you say, giving a thumbs up before picking up utensils with which to CONSUME the pancakes that sit before you.

But in a polite, gentlemanly fashion of course!

As you dig in, you look to your side... Marianne's eating as properly as always and Takamaru's starting to pick at his, but Luciana... she's devouring them at pretty much the same speed as you are. Just as you're about to turn away to resume eating, she notices that you were watching her.

"Mmm! I love Granache's food, it's so much tastier than what we have back home!" she says in between bites. "I'm sure that this is one of the reasons you're sticking around, Mr. Reinhold!"
"I can't exactly deny that," you reply as you take another bite.
"These... they're so sweet," Takamaru says as he examines the food on his fork. "People in this country really eat such pastries for breakfast?" he asks, clearly confused.
"Yuup~! This is a normal breakfast here in Granache! Pretty great, isn't it?" Luciana replies happily.
"It's... strange."

As they continue their conversation, you glance at Princess Marianne... she's watching them with an amused smirk on her face.

>the time for talk is over, NOW I CONSUME

You've had enough talking, so you focus once again on your food, CONSUMING it handily. As Marianne eats at a proper ladylike pace, you look over to Luciana to maybe talk about something... and she seems to have requested a second plate of pancakes.

With nothing else to do, you examine the room while finishing off your drink. Before long, everyone is finished eating, and Princess Marianne gets up from the table.

"Oh? And where are we going now, Marianne?" Luciana asks, wiping her mouth with a napkin.
"You were talking about wanting to check out that book I was reading, so I was thinking the library? I'd much prefer to head into town with you, but I know your father would throw a fit if we did that," Marianne replies, a bit disappointed.
"Yes, it's a shame that he's -that- protective of me... what's the point of sticking me with a bodyguard if I'm just going to be cooped up inside all day?" she says, shrugging. "Aaaanyways, the library sounds great! Let's go!"

With that, Luciana jumps up from the table and hurries towards Marianne. You and Takamaru follow suit, trailing close behind. Along the way, Luciana complains some more about the various annoyances that she has to put up back home. You pretty much filter it out, and it isn't long before you reach the same library that you were at earlier this morning.

"I never will understand why this place has so many separate libraries..." Luciana says as she peers inside.
"Apparently it's for safety reasons," Marianne replies. "There was a fire in the castle library several hundred years ago and everything was lost... so the King at the time decided to separate the royal book collection into several parts so that that disaster wouldn't be repeated."
"Hm. Makes sense, I guess. Still kind of a hassle though," Luciana replies, scratching her head.

You then enter the library and are once again overwhelmed by just how many books you see... and then you realize that this is only -one section- of the castle's total collection, and are even more impressed.

"Hello again, Reinhold. And good morning, Princesses. It's always an appreciated change from the usual scenery to have such lovely ladies visit," Gerhard says, once again appearing from nowhere.

"Wha- an assassin!?" Takamaru shouts as he prepares to draw his sword.
"Oh dear, I apologize if I startled you," Gerhard replies, placing his hands up in indication that he means no harm. "I am but a humble butler, as both Princesses can attest."
"Ehehe, sorry for not warning you beforehand, Takamaru," Luciana says, placing her hand on his shoulder. "Mr. Gerhard is always like this, so you don't have to be so on-guard."
"...he appears from the shadows as if he was... never mind," Takamaru replies, resting his sword.

"I've tried to figure out how he does that, but I still have no idea," you say to Takamaru, who replies with a simple nod.

"Melanie told me about those books that you wanted, so feel free to take a seat while I retrieve them," Gerhard says with a slight bow.
"Thank you, Gerhard,' Princess Marianne replies.

The four of you then head to a nearby table and sit down. Shortly afterwards, Gerhard reappears while balancing a large stack of books on one hand. Takamaru flinches but doesn't react violently this time, and all you can do is wonder how he's able to do that.

"Here are all the books that we have by Sabine Renard. If you need anything else, feel free to ask," he says as he places them onto the table.
"Thanks, Mr. Gerhard! I've been dying to read these, but his stuff is so hard to find back home," Luciana replies with a warm smile.
"Thank you, Gerhard. That will be all for now," Marianne says to him.

Gerhard does a slight bow to the two princesses, and then turns to you and Takamaru.
