If you want to get somewhere in a reasonable time frame (IE: Not taking a fucking year to reach mars) but not cross a solar system in hours, I'd suggest something like perhaps six or seven days to reach the next planet over, maybe two or three weeks at top. A couple months to reach the outer system perhaps?

Hope is pretty good. Going to go with that, since the other battleships were destroyed in the hope that no future wars in space would break out.
>>27419948
I was hoping for a solid number. The game is going to start with the Rebel miners station on the other side of the sun, with the battleship taking 3 months to make that journey [using solar sails at the end to go faster]. the asteroid belt is about 3 AU away from the sun, and so that means 1/2 AU/turn without solar sails and 2 AU/turn with solar sails, -.5 AU/turn per AU beyond 2

Alpha Centauri (the nearest star) is 4.37 light years away. The Earth is 8 light minutes away from the sun and roughly 4 light minutes away from Mars.

60/8=7.5
7.5 X 24 X365.25 X 4.37 = 287305.65

Check me on this guys, my brain doesn't process number correctly. But I'm pretty sure this means that Alpha Centauri is 287,305.65 times as far away from the earth as the sun. So if it took one day to get from the earth to the sun, It would take roughly 786 years to get to the NEAREST star.

Please prove me wrong on this guys. I would much rather be called a retard that can't do arithmetic than deal with the mental plight of coming to terms with the fact that humanity wont reach the stars for at least 10 thousand years.

Keep in mind movements in space are different that what you see in movies : you can't go straight from a point a to a point b, you must do things according to orbital mechanics.
When going to another planet, you can either accelerate for half of the travel and deccelerate for the other half, or you can accelerate the whole way and "aerobrake", which mean ramming the athmosphere of the planet to deccelerate. It's obviously faster to do the second one, but you need heat shield so big it's ridiculous.
You can also accelerate a little and let your speed do the all the effort. But it will take forever.
If you want more info go visit /kspg/, the general of kerbal space program on /vg/. They have some cool pasta with description of orbital mechanics.

So is "doink" a failure to enter hyperspace or a failure to leave?

In the latter case could you theoretically "doink" multiple times, essentially skipping your ship through hyperspace like a stone on the surface of a lake, to make otherwise impossible long jumps.

Why not just accelerate most of the way then burn off some of your excess v by maneuvering through a gravity well? If you do it right you'll be at just the right velocity to achieve a stable orbit.

Well, either that or you fall into a gravity well and explode because you were an idiot.

OP you need to decide how long you want it to take to reach stars that will decide everything else on your speed.
For example if you want it be to be like early sailing it took colonist from Europe about three months of sailing to reach America.
In order to pull off a similar time frame between stars you would need to travel at near 20 times the speed of light (assuming about 5 light years between stars).
If you want it to take months to reach planets your players will never reach another star.

You could pull out something like needing hyperspace gates or a special kind of travel effected by gravity that could only be done outside of a star system, or else sleeper ship and be prepared to skip turn for hundreds of years.

We're off to outer space

We're off to outer space
We're leaving Mother Earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers
Searching for a distant star
Heading off to Iscandar
Leaving all we love behind
Who knows what danger we'll find?
We must be strong and brave
Our home we've got to save
If we don't in just one year
Mother Earth will disappear
Fighting with the Gamilons
We won't stop until we've won
Then we'll return and when we arrive
The Earth will survive
With our Star Blazers

A couple points of speed reference for you, to put it in perspective
------------------------------

One week trip to Mars at shortest possible distance (About 34 million miles):
About 201,785 mph (3.01 x 10^-4 SoL)
One week trip to mars at average distance (About 139.8 million mi):
About 832,139 mph (1.24 x 10^-3 SoL)

One week trip to Mars at longest distance: (About 249 million mi):
About 1,482,142 mph (2.21 x 10^-3 SoL)

Time to furthest point of Neptune's orbit at the third speed:
79 days, 13 hours

If you're travelling to Alpha Cen, you have two things to worry about. Max speed and delta v.

If you seriously think you can make it there, delta v can be pretty much anything. Max speed is your worry: how do you prevent space dust from coring your ship?

Let's say you have .2c delta v, which allows you to accelerate and decelerate .1c (assuming a reserve for course correction, etc). Let's say you accelerate constantly at 1g. You take about a year of acceleration and deceleration. During each of those years, you travel .05 LY. All other years you travel .1 LY. This gives you an earth frame travel time of 44.7 years, and a gamma of ~1.005 (about 44.5 years aboard ship).

You can still expect grandchildren to be born on this ship.

And that may not be a safe speed.

I laughed harder than I should, and it's probably my favorite. The last battleship should have two names, its original designation before it became last of its kind, and the one the captain/crew gave it. That would be an awesome second name, not to big on class, but its got style.
