You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Luciana, the fourth princess of the kindom of Marconetti, has arrived at the castle on official business. Though she's Princess Marianne's best friend, Luciana's personality is what you'd actually expect from a princess! Too bad her demeanor hasn't rubbed off on Marianne at all.

It turns out that Luciana's father offered her hand in marriage to the King, as a plot to unite their two countries. But much to Marianne's relief, the offer was declined.
>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

>"I believe that they'll be here for quite a while, so is there anything that I could get for the two of you?" he asks.

"Umm... how about book on portrait sketching? Or something like a beginner's magic guide?" you ask.
"Hmm... Sylvie actually checked out just about all of the beginner magic guidebooks we have yesterday, but I'll see what I can do," Gerhard does a slight bow, and then turns to Takamaru. "And would you like anything?" he asks.
"I am unable to read, so that will be unnecessary," Takamaru replies.
"Ah. I'm sorry to hear that, reading is such an important skill to have... but no matter. Reinhold, I'll be back shortly."

With that, Gerhard walks off into the forest of bookshelves and disappears as usual.

"Hm... portraits?" Princess Luciana turns to you, a sly look on her face. "That's an interesting hobby you have there, Mr. Reinhold..."

The magic stuff is a bit dumb, honestly. Or rather, the way many people have approached it seems to be. Asking Sylvia to teach us was a bad idea, as several people noted at the time.

She's an apprentice, not a teacher, she has her own duties, we have our own duties, there are qualified teachers we could actually ask, etc etc.

And even with that aside, there's little reason to believe that we have the aptitude to be some great battle mage. I suppose there's not really any harm in approaching someone like that wizard knight to ask about things, but people have approached this as if we'll become an archmage by learning from Sylvia, which is an absolutely foolish assumption on many levels. People just need to settle down and, for once, not try to make the quest's protagonist a master of everything who ushers in social revolution.

"But still, that's not the kind of hobby that I'd expect from a master swordsman like yourself..." Luciana replies. "...though I'm sure that you have plenty of willing models, thanks to your newfound fame..." she says teasingly.
"Eh? It's not like that, I usually draw stuff like the scenery. plants, buildings, that kind of thing."
"Oh? So what's that book for, then?" she asks, now sounding a bit disappointed.
"Well, Nicolette lost a bet with me the other day, so I was going to sketch her later today..." you reply.
"Nicolette? Because of a bet, she... oh my!" Luciana says to you, a massive grin on her face. "Marianne! Your bodyguard certainly is the bold one, I think you might need to watch out!" she says, nudging Marianne with her elbow.
"I very much doubt that he's -that- stupid," Marianne replies, sighing. "And Nicolette is still a lady, despite how crude she usually is."

in that case, care to offer a one liner that will fit here? Luciana seems to be a bro and playful, Marianne is lacking social understanding in how to be playful but she seems to keep her self in a shell. if we do this right, it might be harmless but enjoyable for all.
IF...
our QM Archelon allows this.
seriouly, Marianne stated she sees Nicolette as crude. if we can let the maids dress her up and doll her up with makeup. it might change her mind a bit. so Marianne won't look down on so many people.
>>
"I don't understand why everyone always assumes that it's something risque..." you say, trying to laugh it off. "It's just a portrait sketch, that's all."
"Hmm..." Luciana looks at you intently. "Mr. Reinhold, perhaps..."
"Er... yes?"
"...you're a lot more purehearted than I took you for at first," she says, starry-eyed. "To have the opportunity to be all alone with a pretty girl and not want to do anything more than..."
"Luciana, that's enough," Marianne cuts her off.
"Aww, you're no fun!" Luciana says, pouting.

Just then, Gerhard shows up, taking care to avoid another misunderstanding with Takamaru.

"As I thought, Sylvie did indeed take all of our beginners' magic books. I apologize for that," he says with a bow. "However, I was able to find 'a beginner's guide to the joy of portraits,' by Georges Saint-Pierre."

He then places a rather large book in front of you before bowing again.

"If you need anything else, just call and I will be there."

With that, Gerhard seems to fade away into the scenery of the library, leaving the four of you (seemingly) alone.

As you'd much prefer to avoid any more of Princess Luciana's innuendos, you open the book on sketching that Gerhard brought you. It starts with the absolute basics, and then moves on to different forms of shading, line weight, foreshortening, and several other techniques. As you never actually read a proper book on this before, there's a lot of things here that you'd never even thought of before. You almost feel like an actual artist!

Every so often, you make a point to check on what Marianne and Luciana are doing... though it's mostly giggling about such-and-such character or various rants about plot developments in the books that they're reading.

And Takamaru... just stands beside a bookshelf, never letting down his guard.

This continues for several hours, until Marianne closes her book and stands up.

"As much as I do enjoy reading, I'd like to get some tea now," she says.
"Oh? Teatime already?" Luciana replies. "I'd -completely- lost track of time! I guess time really does go by faster when you're with friends~" she says, hugging onto Marianne's arm.

You expect Princess Marianne to have some backhanded comment in response, but she simply looks at Luciana and sighs.

"Come on, let's get going. I'd prefer not to have the tea go cold before we even get to the courtyard," Marianne says as she walks towards the door, Luciana still attached to her.

You close your book and leave it on the table, then move to open the door for the two princesses. You then follow them to the courtyard, fortunately without any of Luciana's usual teasing comments.

When you reach the courtyard, you do your usual thing of checking that it's safe before holding the door open for the ladies, and then you follow closely behind.

"Aah, the courtyard's as pretty as always! Your gardener certainly does a wonderful job!" Luciana says excitedly as she looks at the garden.
"Yes, it is a pleasant sight," Marianne replies, walking to the table and taking a seat.
"I guess that the warmer climate down here makes for better growing weather..." Luciana says as she examines a rosebush and then takes a seat besides Luciana at the table. "Yet another thing for me to be jealous of, I guess."
"I'm sure that the flowers you have back in Marconetti are just as nice," Marianne replies.
"Yes, but they take so long to grow, and then they don't last very long..." Luciana says to her, pouting.

As the two princesses go on about gardening, Arnaud enters the courtyard. This time, however, he's balancing a teaset on each hand.

"Eheh, I must admit that it was rather difficult to open the door like this," he says, laughing.
"Oh, Mr. Arnaud!" Luciana turns towards him ansd clasps her hands together. "It's so nice to see you again!"
"Likewise, my dear Luciana," Arnaud replies as he places both teasets onto the table and proceeds to place a cup at each place. "I take it that your father is doing well?"
"Yes, though not quite as well as you are," she replies, smiling. "Back pains, arthritis, the usual. It's hard to believe that he's actually younger than you, from the way I've heard him carry on..."
"Yes, well age affects everyone differently," Arnaud replies as he fills the cups with tea. "I simply got lucky."

Arnaud fills Marianne's, Luciana's and then your cup... but stops when he actually gets a good look at Takamaru.

"...oh? An Eastern swordsman is your bodyguard, Princess Luciana?" he says, a surprised look on his face.
"Yes, Father's taken an interest in that part of the world so he's been hiring more and more people from there," Luciana replies.
"I see. Would you prefer that I prepare you some green tea, Mr..."
"Takamaru. And no, what you have here is fine. Thank you," Takamaru replies.
"Ah, no problem then!"

You quietly drink your tea as the princesses have a conversation about flowers, the merits of different kinds of teas, various people they don't like (fortunately, your name wasn't included), and various other things that you weren't really paying attention to.

They carry on for a while, but eventually the tea runs out and Marianne takes it as a sign that it's time to go.

"Oh? Where to now, Marianne?" Luciana asks as Marianne gets up from her seat.
"I guess it's up to you? I'd be fine with the library, but I don't know if you'd be happy spending the entire day in there," Marianne replies.
"Hmm... I know!" Luciana says, clapping her hands. "How about you show me around the castle? It's been a long time since we used to run around here as little girls, I'm sure that it's a lot different now!"
"It's actually pretty much the same, but I have no problem if that's what you want to do," Marianne replies as she heads for the door.

You then meander through the castle, with Marianne explaning each and every room that you pass as Luciana greets all the various servants who she recognizes from when she was younger. Though it's rather mundane, you find it to be a pretty good refresher on where everything is.

As you're passing by the library number four, you hear footsteps approaching.

"Princess Marianne!? Ah, there you are!" Melanie says as she runs towards you, finally stopping in front of Marianne.
"...Melanie?" she replies, clearly surprised.
"Y... yes," Melanie coughs out, doing her best to catch her breath. "I... I have a message from the King..."
"Eh? From Father?"
"Yes, he wanted me to tell you that he'd like to have dinner with you and Princess Luciana tonight, for old times' sake," Melanie says, finally back to normal.

You glance over at the Princess, and her expression is one of genuine happiness. From the few days you've known her, you never expected that she was even capable of it.

"Finally able to have dinner with your father... that's wonderful, Marianne!" Luciana says, a warm smile on her face.
"Y... yes," Marianne replies, trying to regain her composure. "Melanie, did he say when?" she asks.
"Umm, he's actually in the dining hall right now," Melanie replies as she adjusts her glasses. "Would you like me to tell him that you were doing something else, or..."
"No, we'll be heading down right now," Marianne replies.

Still smiling, Princess Marianne does a total about face and heads towards a nearby stairwell.

"He's kind of like... Sir Vincent? But less scary, and more... I don't know... loud? I'm not quite sure how to put it," Luciana says, placing her hand on her chin. "He's pretty much the total opposite of my father, though."

Luciana then places her hand on Marianne's shoulder and leans in close.

"You're suuuuuuper excited to finally be able to have dinner with your dear old Daddy, aren't youuu~" she says teasingly.
"...could you please stop that?" Marianne replies, blushing profusely.
"To be honest, I've always been jealous of your relationship with your father. I'm my father's seventh child and he's all stuffy so we've never been all that close, but you get your father all to yourself~" she says, giggling.

He looks nothing like Marianne, but you can tell from his clothing and where he's sitting that this man is the king of this country, Thierri Valentin Yves Granache.

"Haha! There's my adorable little Marianne!" he exclaims as he rises from his seat and races towards Marianne, lifting her in the air with ease. "It's nice to finally be able to have dinner with my baby girl!" he continues, a wide grin on his face.
"F... father, could you please put me down...?" Marianne says, her face beet-red.
"Ah, sorry about that. You know how I get, I just couldn't help myself!" he then turns to Luciana. "And Princess Luciana, it's always nice to see you! I do hope you're not too mad at me for turning you down, though..."
"Don't worry, I was actually expecting it," Luciana replies. "I can't deny that I'm more than a bit disappointed, though."
"Can't help being a heartbreaker, even after all these years..." the King says, "Your eldest sister still has a grudge against me, you know!" he says, laughing.

And then he turns to you.

"And this is the legendary swordmaster Reinhold!" the King says, taking you hand in his and giving it a FIRM shake. "I know that Marianne can be a handful, but I do hope that you can hang in there!"

And the people in the castle are pretty nice to us.

And then on top of that we get days off and they even pay us. All this for just making sure a pretty alright girl doesn't get killed. I think they're going to blow Reinhold's mind when they tell him about that. It's not like we got days off when we were younger.

"Guarding your daughter has proven to be an... enlightening experience," you say as respectfully as you can.
"Hahaha!" The King slaps you on the shoulder, nearly knocking you over. Suddenly, it's not too hard to imagine why it's said that Sir Vincent is his best friend. "Yeah, she's always been a moody sort. It's probably because I spoiled her like crazy, but that's what happens when a guy raises a daughter on his own, you know? Anyways, it's nice to see that you're faring better than Gregory did."
"Thanks, Your Majesty." you reply, trying to ignore the pain in your shoulder.

The King then turns to Takamaru and shakes his hand.

"Nice to see you again, man!"
"Likewise, your Majesty," Takamaru replies.

You then take your seats, with Marianne and Luciana sitting at either side of the King and you and Takamaru taking seats next to your respective princesses. Just as you sit down, you hear loud footsteps coming from the entrance to the dining hall... and see Sir Vincent come in.

"Vincent! Glad to see that you could make it!" the King says, a grin on his face. "Is Gregory going to show up, too?"
"No, he said that he'd be heading home," Sir Vincent replies as he takes a seat next to you. "You know how much he hates formal situations."
"Psh, this isn't any formal dinner, it's just a meal for friends and family!" he replies, a disapointed look on his face.
"Yeah, but you know how Gregory is..." Sir Vincent replies, laughing.

"Y-..." you begin to say something else, but then you glance at Princess Marianne and notice that she's glaring at you. "Ehehe..."

After a while, several butlers enter the dining hall, all pushing dining carts. They place a tray in front of each of you, bow, and leave. You look at your plate, and see a ridiculous number of meats, soups, and breads... but the thing that catches your eye is the generous number of turkey legs that sit before you.

"Alright, dinner is served!" the King says, and then turns to you. "No need to be shy, Reinhold! I heard from Margot about your healthy appetite, so you don't need to worry about keeping up appearances in front of me," he says with a hearty laugh before proceeding to tear into a turkey leg.

Marianne looked over the lewd fanfiction she had written, her blush so luminent it almost lit the dark room up as much as the candle she was writing with.

She looked left, then right, then with utmost care closed the writing book and hid it in a concealed panel in the floor beneath her bed.

Approval from the King himself is as good of an excuse as any, so you get to devouring your food. Looking at the others at the table, you see that both the King and Sir Vincent are eating just as fast as you are, while the two princesses eat at a more ladylike pace and Takamaru slowly picks at his food.

"So, Luciana," the King says in between bites, "you don't think your father will be too mad, do you?" he asks.
"I doubt it," Princess Luciana replies. "Father's still quite intent on uniting our two countries, but he'll be happy as long as we remain allies."
"Same as ever, huh. I don't know what he's expecting, there's no way that his goal will be met within his lifetime even if I accepted."
"Oh, he knows that. Father may be old, but his ideal vision of the world still hasn't changed," she replies. "That's why he's still concerning himself with Ancellotta's slave trade instead of just enjoying his old age in peace," she says as she takes a bite out of a turkey leg.
"Same lofty goals as Alsiradna, but with nowhere near his power... I really hope he knows what he's doing," the King says, letting out a long sigh.
"That's why he's marrying off his children left and right!" Luciana replies, a smile on her face. "Have to form those political bonds, just in case someone tries something foolish..."
"And I suppose that's why your father invited us to your brother's birthday celebration?" Sir Vincent asks.
"Of course! He's sure to show Emilio off to Marianne, in hopes that she takes a shine to him..." Luciana says, nudging Marianne with her shoulder.

I like the idea of enchanted swords, but that is a good point. We need to figure out more about how magic works and how reliable it is, and we definitely don't want to end up using magic as a crutch.

Anyways, the thrust of my argument is that we want a team for when she travels. People who can clear a room, know how to blend in, can scout out lodgings and such if we have to stay somewhere on the road.

"If your brother is anything like he was the last time I met him, I very much doubt I will," Marianne replies, trying to concentrate on her food.
"Oh well, there goes my evil plot to make you my sister..." Luciana sticks out her tongue playfully. "But yeah, Father -really- wants to marry off one of his kids to Marianne so that our families have an actual blood link."
"That's all up to her," the King replies as he finishes off the last of his turkey legs. "I married for love, so I have every intention of letting Marianne here do the same," he says with a smile.
"I wish I was so lucky," Luciana replies, a slightly disappointed look in her eyes. "...anyways, would you mind if I asked you something?"
"Ask away, we're all friends here!" the King replies as a butler places another full plate of food in front of him.

"Marianne didn't know, but I might as well ask you... has your brother been spotted within the kingdom recently?"
"Raoul?" the King lets out a disappointed sigh. "No, haven't seen him in what, ten years? That jerk got hooked on the adventure life from back when we were kids roaming the continent with Vincent, and he never looked back... can't say that I exactly blame him, but it's kind of a jerk move to disappear for a decade and not even send your only relatives a single letter..."

"That's too bad... if he was around, then I could've tried for him..." Luciana says as she takes a drink. "Would've been nice to be an adventurer's wife, too. Travelling the world, seeing the sights..."
"Oh, so -that's- what you're into?" the King replies with a hearty laugh. "you'd better keep that a secret from your father, or he'll stick you inside the castle forever!"
"He -would- do something like that... Takamaru? Do me a favor and keep what you heard just now to yourself."
"Keep what to myself?" Takamaru replies.

They continue their political talk for a little while, and then Marianne finally speaks up.

you are supposed to compliment her in a gentlemanly manner, not act like a shy teen girl every time.
considering her personality, teasing her without being blatantly rude is fine too.
>>
>>27430419
We're a commoner soldier, only recently promoted to doing anything which requires tact. We are, in fact, an awkward teenager. I don't know where we're supposed to be getting conversational savvy and gentlemanly from.
>>
>>27430435
and it seems more in character to you for a guy who grew up in a brothel to act like a shy middle-schooler?
>>
>>27430435
Clearly we had a sharp, witty superior officer in the army.
>>
>>27430400

We don't have to be charming all the time, but it's about consistency. Since our character is established as somewhat charismatic suddenly acting bashful is not a good way to "mix it up" in my mind because it just doesn't make any sense at this point.
>>
>>27430435
We've been forced to grow up fast, raised in a brothel followed by enlisting to the army. We're not an awkward teenager.
>>
>>27430419
Again, this is a shared fantasy and we all have our visions of the character and how they should react to a situation. Yours is just as valid as anyone else's. But everyone else's is just as valid as yours. So argue, and vote, and give your opinions, and especially explain them, but telling someone they're doing ti wrong doesn't really help anyone.
>>
>>27430419
Not to mention that we've been warned (and have observed first hand several times) that Luciana makes a sport of messing with people. Not to mention she's done basically this exact same bit on us twice before.

At this point it just makes sense to be braced for it.

Growing up in a brothel and being in an army does nothing for being suave, gentlemanly, and tactful. Actually, the complete opposite. Our speech, logically, should be boorish, common, and blunt.

Hell, I'm surprised we haven't sworn or belched yet.
>>
>>27430477

>>
>>27430477
yes, heaven forbid we act anything except a stereotype - a stereotype that's completely fictional, I should add, since it's not like you have any experiences with a medieval whorehouse.

In your experiences how should whores act? You're so knowledgeable, you should be able to share.
>>
>>27430453
This. I don't get where this shy guy act came from when he's been capable of deflecting these situations with snark or wit up until now.

I can only think of one legitimate reason to suddenly be shy and stammering when it comes to the princess and I doubt that that is an implication everyone wants to be made canon.
>>
>>27430484
Yes, well, small sacrifices. In any event, being slightly awkward is more likely than being on the ball and sophisticated.
>>
>>27430477
We really know very little of Reinhold's backstory beyond the basics.

Between his crazy skill level for his age, his swag-ass sword, and the way we've interacted with people its pretty much a given that he had some kind of mentor to teach him not to be a shithead.
>>
"All this talk of preparation reminds me of war, perhaps she ought to make herself a gallant knight"
>>
>>27430494
Well, unless you're talking about a high end brothel exclusively for the rich and wealthy which would probably not take in orphan children, I'm fairly sure that a commoner brothel is staffed by commoners who speak like commoners do and their primary clientele is commoners.

>>
>>27430516
That doesn't mean it has to be boorish and blunt though. Just common.

Which it is. Reinhold isn't suave. He just gets by on being nice, keeping his mouth shut when he needs to, and being snarky. He isn't a smooth gentleman nor a boorish brute.
>>
"If we're going to be dressing her, could we get her a suit of full plate instead?" you say jokingly. "It'd make my job a lot easier."
"Haha, I bet it would!" the King replies, deeply amused by your little comment.
"Hmm... so -that's- what you like, now it all makes sense," Luciana says, a mischevious grin on her face. "Though I don't think Nicolette would appreciate you infringing on her territory, Marianne."

The King, Luciana and Sir Vincent all burst out laughing, while Marianne simply places her head on the table.

"Please, Luciana... give it a rest for a little while at least..." she mumbles.
"Aww, don't be like that!" Luciana replies. "I need to get all my teasing in tonight, since I'll be heading back home tomorrow."

Upon hearing Luciana's comment, both Marianne and the King look at her in surprise.

"You're leaving so soon?" Marianne asks.
"Yeah, I don't mind you sticking around for a few days longer," the King says to her.
"As much as I'd like to stay, Father gets rather paranoid when I'm away. And if I remain here for a prolonged period of time, he might think that you accepted his offer, and I'd like to avoid any misunderstand of -that- nature, you see..." Luciana explains.
"I suppose that makes sense," Marianne replies with a somber expression.
"Don't look so sad, we'll see each other again in less than a month!" Luciana says, trying to cheer her friend up. "And I'll make a point of showing you all the sights of Marconetti's capital city!"

That was what spawned it sure, but we're like 10 threads too late to turn the ship around. We've pretty much bounced back and forth between dry quips and politeness as appropriate from the word go, so if people wanted to say "nuh uh he wouldn't talk like that" they should have brought it up like two weeks ago.

But this is the beauty of having a character with a fluid backstory, our chosen personality is easy to retroactively explain by filling in the blanks.
>>
>>27430541
Being boorish and blunt would be the army, since flowery words don't help you there and soldiers trend toward boorishness.

He doesn't have to be a stereotype and it's completely illogical to act boorish and crass in the presence of Royalty, even if that is what you're used to doing. It would take a complete idiot to behave like that.
>>
>>27430554
/tg/ has been pretty schizo on this character. We really need to decide soon. Are we a wry, sarcastic sonofabitch, or are we quiet and professional?

The only quest /tg/ is really suited for would be the character of someone possessed by Legion, with amnesia and no way to counteract the demonic impulses. Although sometimes the gentlemen might take over, in which case they're gentlemanly demonic impulses.
>>
>>27430581
agreed.
>>
>>27430609
>Are we a wry, sarcastic sonofabitch, or are we quiet and professional?
it is pretty much already decided that we are both. depending on the situation.
>>
>>27430623
Sarcasm in moderation, professionalism in abundance.
>>
>>27430623
Maybe if you're only thinking in terms of archetypes. You can take your job seriously and still be snarky.
>>
>>27430609
People can't be both, or either at different times? He has usually made quips when the princess acted like an ass or when sitting at a table.
>>
>>27430623
no they are not. unless you try to do them both at the same occasion, which is impossible anyways. so there is no problem.
>>
>>27430630
I think there has been quests like that. We're the MC has thousand voices in his head and follows their wims.
>>
>>27430632
So basically "whatever is best for me at the moment"?
>>
>>27430563
We probably had to deal with nobility in the army anyway and they would demand a certain level of etiquette since they are if nothing else pedantic assholes

Also the gentlemanliness can be easily enough seen as Reinhold drastically trying to not fuck up this amazing situation he ended up in because if he relaxed he might accidentally cause an incident something which we have I might add been warned about

We don't have to come across as smooth with everything but maintaining the level of civility and character we have so far should be no problem unless you really have a massive hard on for us turning into some asshole who is rude, boorish and difficult for the sake of fitting the stereotypical soldier of European history which is not the setting or place that this is happening in

tl;dr get the fuck over it, this is fantasy so we can have the character act how the majority wants to
>>
>>27430609
Absolutely no reason whatsoever we can't be both as appropriate to the situation at hand.

Sometimes snark isn't appropriate, or we just don't see a good opportunity to slip a jab in, in which case we default to professional because that's what we're paid to be.
>>
>>27430645
Calm down
>>
>>27430645
To me, my problem with it is that it just feels like we're playing any card that's in our best interests at the moment. Saying something that we know might get us in trouble feels more organic than calculated responses.
>>
>>27430644
whatever is best for the situation more likely. we act wry and sarcastic when we are having a chat over some food or tea. but we are serious when we are guarding princess over uncertain territory. and we let her have her piece and quiet from time to time, in order to not act like a complete douch who always pressess.
>>
>>27430632

Our virtue is our professionalism.
Our vice is our wry and relatively gentle sarcasm.

That's not too hard to conceptualise, is it? People are multifaceted. I'm sure Sir Gregor was also very professional, just as his vice is more causticity.
>>
>>27430649
I am calm, that's why I typed out a big response instead of random insults

>>27430656
If that's the way the majority goes then that's just how it is

I don't particularly like the insane lengths we went to discussing weapons or the plans to make some kind of tacticool response unit for the princess but I let it go because enough other people seemed to want to
>>
>>27430648

Rather, /tg/ goes for the snark when someone can come up with an amusing line. Which isn't too far from how a normal person might act if they like to sound at least a bit witty.
>>
>>27430680
Well, talking about it isn't a bad thing. It's actually better if we discuss it. I do think it is a good thing to bring up how we're less playing a distinct character and more playing one that's "safe".
>>
>>27430688
I think "safe," is a pretty appropriate adjective when you're dealing with royalty this high up.
>>
>>27430680
>I don't particularly like the insane lengths we went to discussing weapons or the plans to make some kind of tacticool response unit for the princess but I let it go because enough other people seemed to want to

Why are those bad? The bad part was spergs blowing shit out of proportion. You do not know what tacticool means, btw.
>>
>>27430550
> ask luciana what her home is like.
>>
>>27430688
I personally don't believe that playing a character that is "unsafe" will lead to a more distinct person, particularly when said character is in a situation where he really should be feeling the pressure to play it safe.
>>
>>27430688
To be fair, we had no issue punching Border Bitch the fuck out and then proceeding to indirectly antagonize him every time we met, despite knowing full well that doing so could result in creating some political enemies for ourselves.

The "Safe" route in that situation would probably have been holding Nicollette back and then proceeding to give him a verbal beatdown, which wouldn't have been hard considering he wasn't hard to fluster at all, but by god he was getting on our nerves and punching him felt GOOD.

We're capable of taking an unsafe choice, we just have had very little reason to do so because other than him everyone in the castle is some variety of bro.
>>
Reinhold an adult and is able to comprehend that this position is the best he can hope exempt from fever dreams of glory.

He also understands more or less what these people enjoy in a personality, so Reinhold makes a choice to put out whatever his audience would find most amusing, as befits our young witty gentleman

But in reality we simply want to continue our peaceful and otherwise uneventful career as princess guard and thats that.

Reinhold will say w.e he thinks will amuse them most while inkeeping with an appearance and reputation he deems acceptable.

Atleast thats my take on his various moods, statements, and actions.

As the others continue to talk about various things, you decide to finish your food instead of joining in the conversation. After a little while, a butler enters the dining hall and reminds the King that he has other things scheduled, which signals the end of the dinner and so you all get up from your seats.

"Well, thanks to everyone for showing up!" he says with a wide grin. "It's always nice to see my Marianne with a smile on her face instead of the usual scowl..."
"I agree! Marianne, quit being such a mope!" Luciana replies, nudging Marianne's arm.
"Only if you stop constantly teasing everyone you see," Marianne replies with a slight smile. "That's going to get you in trouble one of these days, you know."
"If that does happen, Takamaru here will rush in and protect me! Isn't that right?" Luciana says, turning towards him.
"It is my duty," Takamaru replies, as serious as ever.

"Bah, back to king business... see you later, Marianne!" the King says as he gives her a big hug.
"Take care, Father," Marianne replies, blushing slightly.
"You too, Luciana! Takamaru!"
"I'll inform my father that you were as perfect a gentleman as always," Luciana says.
"And thanks again for looking after my little Marianne, Reinhold! Keep up the good job!" he says to you, slapping you hard on your back as he passes by.

With that, the King heads out to do whatever it is that Kings do, and Arnaud enters the dining hall.

"I shall show you to your room, Princess Luciana," he says, taking a deep bow.
"Ah, thank you! Goodnight, Marianne! Mr. Reinhold!" Luciana says, waving to both of you.
"Goodnight, Luciana," Marianne replies.
"Yeah, goodnight.' you join in.

As Takamaru walks past to follow Luciana, you turn to him.

"Maybe we can get some sparring in when we meet in Marconetti," you say.
"Heh. That would be nice," Takamaru replies, hurrying to catch up with Luciana.

Ok guys, we get it, literally every word we've said has been a grave affront to humanity as a whole and its all complete shit, and we shouldn't talk about anything ever. We get it already.

This thread has been fouled beyond belief anyway. Actually, I think it would be best if archelon picked up that trick where he never writes out the protagonist's lines and the QM reduces his speaking lines to a narrative approximation. Then it'll be like he was actually witty or professional and you can't prove otherwise.
>>
>>27431358
If people get a chuckle out of it, why are you complaining? We're not here to write a masterpiece. It doesn't need to live up to some gold standard of highbrow humor.

I don't know if its just a few very vocal people, but someone seems to be taking this shit WAY too seriously all of a sudden. No rash decision will result in a characters death unless the QM has reached annoyance critical mass or is just that hardcore. If he cant take it anymore he is infinitely more likely to just call a hiatus of indefinite length.

Granted the meat comment rubbed me the wrong way also.
But arch didn't make a scene about it.

Hes clearly a kinda funny guy trying too hard to live up to his percieved station. And every once in a while he lets his odd funny side out.
