You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Luciana, the fourth princess of the kindom of Marconetti, has arrived at the castle on official business. Though she's Princess Marianne's best friend, Luciana's personality is what you'd actually expect from a princess! Too bad her demeanor hasn't rubbed off on Marianne at all.

After spending most of the day being teased relentlessly by Luciana, you had the opportunity to eat dinner with the King. Fortunately, you managed not to make a fool of yourself.

But now all of that's over, as you're free for the night!

>Guard Rank: RAT
>Congratulations, you are now a pathetic Rat!
>Snakes eat rats... but rats are ranked above them?
>Though she still isn't fond of you, the Princess dislikes you a bit less!
>You're still not considered a person, though.

As Princess Marianne closes her door, you take a long sigh of relief before making a quick stop at your room to grab a few pencils. After doublechecking that you do in fact have your sketchbook on you, you head back out into the hallway.

You waste little time in making it to the kitchen, where you assume that you'll find Nicolette waiting for you... and luckily, your assumption was right! She's standing in front of the entrance to the kitchen, talking to Sylvie as usual.

"Oh, hey! You're early today," Nicolette says, waving to you.
"Um... good evening, Reinhold!" Sylvie joins in.
"Hey, you two," you say, stopping in front of them.
"Ehehe, I bet you rushed down here so early because you were anxious to finally get a chance to draw me," Nicolette teases as she nudges your shoulder.
"Actually, I just got done having dinner with the King and then Marianne headed to her room for the night so here I am," you reply.
"Seriously? Aww, I wish I'd known about that," Nicolette says with a disapointed look on her face.

"Ha! See, Sylvie? I told you that he was itching to draw me!" Nicolette nudges Sylvie's arm with her elbow. "sorry to disappoint you though, you're gonna be drawing me as-is. Fancy dresses or whatever wasn't part of the bet," she says as she sticks her tongue out at you.

"Hm. The library sounds nice, I guess. I'll be able to focus on drawing without having to worry about losing daylight or getting in someone's way," you say.
"Alright, then. I guess I'll be able to avoid people making smartassed comments there," Nicolette replies, scratching her head. "Though that Gerhard creeps me right the hell out sometimes."
"Eh? But Mr. Gerhard's really nice," Sylvie says in protest.
"He's an alright guy, but the way he'll just pop up out of nowhere is just..."
"I know what you mean," you say, laughing.
"I'm surprised that it doesn't bug you, knowing how jumpy you are," Nicolette says to Sylvie.
"Um, I guess I got used to it pretty quickly," she replies.

Nicolette then stretches out her arms, filling the air with several loud cracking sounds.

"Alright, that's enough wasting time! The sooner we do this, the sooner I can get back to doing other stuff!" Nicolette says as she cracks her knuckles.
"Oh, okay... I guess I'll see you later, then..." Sylvie says as he starts to walk away from the two of you.

"Ah, Reinhold. Third time's a charm, I suppose? And with a different assortment of people each time..." Gerhard says with a bow, once again appearing out of nowhere.

"Very well, then I'll go fetch chairs for you and miss Sylvie," Gerhard says, disappearing into thin air before anyone could say another word. A few seconds later, you spot him by the window, placing down a few chairs and a small table.

"Is this adequate?" Gerhard asks.
"Looks good, thanks," you reply.
"If you happen to need more pencils or paper, just ask. I have more than enough to share from my own personal supply," he says to you with a bow, and then wanders off into the shadows.
"Alright, then..." Nicolette says as she heads to the window and stands beside it. "This good?"

You do a quick sketch of Nicolette's basic shape... and then tear it out of your sketchbook and toss it aside. You have a few more false starts before you're finally satisfied with the initial work, and then you continue drawing.

After a little bit under an hour, you put the finishing touches on your drawing... and it's complete! As this is your first time doing a proper sketch of an actual person, you can't say that it's GREAT... but it's not horrible!

Seeing that you're finally done, Nicolette does a few stretches that result in more horribly painful-sounding cracking noises before approaching the table that you're sitting at. Sylvie's right next to you examining the drawing, so Nicolette stands behind both of you and peers over your shoulder to get a good look.

"Hm... not quite the artistic masterpiece that I was hoping for," she says. "But it's not bad."
"Yeah, it's better than anything that I could draw..." Sylvie joins in. "...with some more practice, I bet you could be really good!"
"Heh, thanks," you say as you get up from your seat to stretch. "I've never done a portrait sketch before, so I was just kind of winging it."

"Hm," Gerhard says from the other side of the table, holding your sketchbook. "far better than I'd expect from an amateur. I see that you took Saint-Pierre's lessons to heart, good job," he says as he hands you back your sketchbook.
"...the fu- Gerhard, you seriously need to quit doing that," Nicolette says, clearly unnerved.
"I apologize if I startled you, Nicolette," Gerhard says as he bows in apology. "Is there anything that I can help you with, Reinhold?"

That's not really what happens with people from poor backgrounds. They are the most devout followers: the desperate, the uneducated, those who are trying to find hope and who cling to tradition in a nasty world. The street rat from a whore house could be incredibly religious, even if he is hypocritical in following the precepts of that religion by sinning: he just feels really guilty about it afterwards.

"Don't really think about it" is a privileged position from people who live in a society where religion is not paramount anymore. We are pretty much projecting what we think a medieval city urchin might believe from our perch above the mist of ignorance and faith that permeates that kind of world.

That said, "don't really think about it too much" is a nice noncommital answer because Sylvie was even able to ask that question in this world: it's an indication that there are people who aren't religious, that it's a Thing not to be terribly religious, so it's a fine option to make in the context of the game, so I'll go with that. Fuck being religious. Fantasy gods are all assholes anyhow.

Yeah, but people don't believe that kind of thing easily. Try to find examples of people in, say, Medieval Europe who are anti-theist in that way. It's just easier to believe that you personally have failed somehow, that you are being punished for your sins, be it original sin or karma from your previous life. It's inbuilt into hierarchial religions, a way to guilt the lower ranks into believing that they deserve what they get, that other people should be kept in the same kind of squalor as they do, and that there is hope of salvation down the line as long as they tow it.

"I never really thought about religion all that much," you reply. "Why, is that important?"
"No, it's just that there are some spells that are really hard to do if you're not devout, that's all. I guess you won't be using Sanctuary without a scroll any time soon, though..." Sylvie replies.
"...oh."

"So, um..." sylvie says as she adjusts her glasses. "The basics. Okay. ...really wish I had a book to work from, though I guess that's my own fault. Um... the basis of magic is Script."
"...like fancy writing?" you ask, not sure what she's talking about.
"No, it's like... well, the easiest way is to show you," Sylvie says as she closes her eyes to concentrate. "Clergy say that it's the visual manifestation of the language of God."

Sylvie then opens her eyes and points up. Following slightly above her finger, you can see what looks kind of like glowing red writing floating in the air.

"Uh..." you rub your eyes to make sure you're seeing this right.
"This is Script," Sylvie says as it fades away. "After you 'open your mind to the universe,' all you have to do is concentrate and anything you say can make it appear. This is called 'Conceptualization.'"
"That sounds kind of complicated," you say, not quite sure what's going on.
"Most people have trouble learning how to do it, but it's really easy to do once you do it once," Sylvie says with a slight smile.

>>
>>27462974
hmm.
>>
>>27462974
Sorry Reinhold, no levels in Cleric for you.
>>
>>27462971
Even if you don't get taught religion, people will be religious around you. You inhale religion and learn it through osmosis, in the same way that young children learn languages very, very well. Even if you don't know about religion (which is not at all strange), you still believe in it because everyone else does.

Even if the church is corrupt, people still believe in God. To unbelieve in God you need to live in an environment that allows for heresy and originality, like the social circles of philosophers and thinkers, OR you need to live in a society where atheism or nonreligiosity is already an established thing that you can choose because other people have (this being modern society, where people have options in regards to God).

A child reared in a religious environment will become religious in the absence of open alternatives or a liberal philosophical atmosphere that encourages skepticism, thinking or empiricism. A child who is not religious is probably brought up in a non-religious environment. You don't get wolf-childs even in the slums of a city who don't speak language, and the same kind of thing goes for religion.

I'm not saying you are wrong in choosing "never thought about it", I'm saying your reasons are wrong, which is not a moral failing and not a big thing to hold against to but I just felt like nitpicking it.
>>
>>27462923
Yeah, if Reinhold is *completely* non-religious it's probably either because of a) lack of exposure or b) exposure to hypocrisy. Given his upbringing, the former is very unlikely; the latter, on the other hand...

(Reinhold could probably still reasonably be customarily-religious, à la modern Japanese Shinto practice or very slightly stronger, in a setup where the dominant religion(s) has/have only relatively weak temporal power.)

>>27462974
... on the other hand, "never thought about it" is rather different from "never think about it". Also 'clergy' has certain >implications for the above. Hmm.
>>
Wow jeez tonight has not gone well so far for my boy Reinhold.

>>
>>27462974

"So, um... the next step! Okay," Sylvie says as she slaps her hands together. "Yeah, okay. So once you learn how to conceptualize Script, you're technically able to cast spells. What's a simple one I can use in here..." she scratches her head for a bit, and then snaps her fingers together. "That's it!"

Sylvie then closes her eyes and holds her hands out over the table.

"Dancing wisps, gather before me and light my path."

With each word she says, you can see Script slowly appearing around Sylvie's arms.

"Sparkle shine."

The script immediately vanishes, and you can see several fuzzy orbs of light float out from Sylvie's hands.

"You saw the Script appear, right? That was 'Conceptualization.' And when I said the spell name, Sparkle Shine, that's called 'Invocation.' That's pretty much the basic form of most spells," Sylvie says as the glowing orbs stabilize over the table. "You Conceptualize a spell, and then Invoke it by saying the spell's name. Then the Script disappears and the spell is cast."

On the other hand, she did ask if Reinhold was /religious/, rather than whether he was /devout/. One can believe in a deity, but still reject -- or simply fail to belong to -- any church.

>>27463093
Such people generally give things more thought, not less, than the average churchgoer.

"People who get really good with a certain spell can Conceptualize just by thinking the spell, and then the only thing they have to say is the spell name in order to Invoke it. I wish I could do that, but I'm just a beginner... Sir Gregory can do it with pretty much all of the spells he knows, but he doesn't because he likes to be, um... theatrical," Sylvie says, blushing slightly.
"Yeah, that sounds like him," you reply.
"He told me that it was something about making his enemies fear what's coming... but anyways, that's the basic form. Once you know that, you can cast most spells."

"Most spells? There's ones that don't work like how you just said?" you ask.
"Um, yeah. Conceptualization works based on thought, Script doesn't work by direct words. That's why you have stuff like the Church's spells that don't work unless you're devout and have the same basic mode of thought as they do. Sanctuary's the big one that most people can't cast at all unless they're really strong believers."
"So that's why you asked me if I was religious."
"Yeah, I thought it'd be cool if you could cast Sanctuary on your own since you're a bodyguard, but I guess that's no good," Sylvie says, laughing a bit. "So, um... did you catch all of that?"

>>
>>27463214
i second this.
>>
>>27463177

If people stopped believing in God because the church and its priests were corrupt, why was there ever religion?

The hypocrisy of the clergy is not a deal-breaker, as long as everyone, everyone believes in God. And everyone does: they probably think God will punish the clergy when whatever time of reckoning comes along (be it purgatory, hell or the pit stop before your next reincarnation or whatever).

Corrupt clergy don't result in atheists storming the barricades: corrupt clergy result in heretics, schismatics, protestants and True Believers storming the barricades, or maybe the rise of other religions or messianic cults or whatever, but not, or at least very, very rarely, atheistic cults. The French Revolution is the closest one, and that was in a society where the upper crust was going through a the starts of an atheistic phase. And after the revolution, things pretty much returned to status quo in regards to Faith in God (similarly in Russia), like a weed that is really hard to eradicate.

Religion gets stronger the more you oppress it (if it doesn't actually die because everyone is wiped out, though). This is inbaked into Christianity in a big way, for example: Christians have a really big thing about being victims, even when they're the rulers of the world. Religion thrives in desperation and in times when you need hop... and when you're a street urchin in a whorehouse, no one loves you... except God.
>>
>>27463177
>They were the same women beating us until we passed out.
1) Your vision of Reinhold's childhood is a lot worse than mine.
2) Even if you're right about it -- well, it's a terrible thing to say, but religion does actually get passed on that way.
3) Read the votes. Nobody wants Reinhold to be religious; we just don't agree on why he wouldn't be.

>>27463194
- Is it possible to Conceptualize two spells, one after the other, and only then Invoke them?
- Does the Invocation have to be done in <name of the language Reinhold speaks>? What do casters from Takamura's country do, if they want to cast Sparkle Shine? (Would Reinhold know to ask this question?)
>>
>>27463214
Script is universal, though every person has differences in the exact Script they end up conceptualizing, which manifests in slight differences in spells.

It's impossible to translate though, and people can't even figure out how to separate individual characters out. It's pretty much magic gibberish writing to most people.

Yeah, if it's untranslatable, how do wizards know what a spell does? They must have at least a vague idea of what those things mean.

Unless it works in a different way and "Script" is just ways of drawing magical energy in, while the wizard does the forming part in his own mind.

>>
"So, um... spells that work based on a specific mode of thought are called Mantra. Everything else is called Rote. Mantra spells are mostly from the Church, though there are individual people like Mr. Niklaus who end up having all the spells they make as Mantra."

"Huh. So, do you have to cast in a specific language?" you ask, remembering Takamura.
"No, it works on thought. Spells in different languages are obviously different, but it's all still the same basic form."

"Oh yeah, another question," you say. "Can you conceptualize two spells and then invoke them after both are done?"
"Yeah, but it's really hard to do. Even harder than maintaining multiple active spells," Sylvie replies.

Sylvie then claps her hands together, seemingly pleased with her explanation.

"So, um, that's the basics! You conceptualize Script, and then Invoke it by saying the spell's name. Now, um... oh yeah! Capacity!" Sylvie says, snapping her fingers.
"I remember you saying that you had like five times more capacity than most people," you reply.
"Um, yeah. Every spell uses up its own specific amount of magical energy, and when you're out you can't use magic at all until you've slept for a while. I think it's like 80% of your maximum that you recharge from a full night's rest."
"That sounds kind of rough."
"Yeah, but you can increase your capacity by using it up," Sylvie says. "Sir Gregory said that it works like a muscle, it builds up the more you work it. That's why even though I have a high base to start out with, his maximum capacity's a lot higher than mine."

>[1/?]
>>
>>27463367

It could be like an hash function that gives you something that can't be decyphered. We just see the "script" image as a kind of identifier, while the shapes of the images result in completely different results because there is no or a very complicated relationship between the spells and the images. They could even just be indexes pointing towards spells like a quick dial number to God.

Sidenote, makes me wonder if there is or are real gods, or if it's just magic as science again. Well, we'll probably not find out, so whatever.

"...so, assuming that I can even cast a spell, it's possible for me to rise my capacity to be as high as yours?" you ask.
"Yup! Though I make a point to cast spells every night until I'm at about 20%, so I very much doubt that you'll ever pass me," Sylvie says, sticking her tongue out at you.

"Hm..." Sylvie scratches her head, trying to think of something. "I think that's it for the basics!"
"Wait, that's all?" you ask.
"Yeah, I'll get to the harder stuff later. Now the final part of today's lesson is for you to try and 'open your mind to the universe.'"
"...I don't really get what you mean."
"Nobody gets it at first," Sylvie says, a smile on her face. "An easy way to put it is that you need to meditate until you finally 'get it.'"
"Uh... meditate?"
"Yeah. You have to meditate until your mind opens to the cosmos and you can Conceptualize. So come on," Sylvie says as she pulls you up from your seat and has you sit on the floor by the window.

"Alright, close your eyes and clear your thoughts..."

Sooo would it be possible to have a sort of script "conversation"?
Using script not as a spell but as an evolving state of being interacting with yourself. Conceptualize but not invoke.
Allow the script to cover you and infuse you. Essential ly invoking the power gathered through your actions and belief in those actions.
.... if that makes any sense.
Sort of like a passive scriptural aura instead of a spell.

You follow Sylvie's instructions and try to clear your mind... and it's EXTREMELY hard. Your mind keeps drifting to thoughts of Princess Marianne yelling at you... or swords... or pancakes... but after a while, it starts to work. Your mind clears of all thoughts and you are completely aware of your surroundings...

And suddenly, you are aware...

... that your legs are starting to fall asleep.

"Gaah!" you shout as you do your best to stand back up, using the windowsill as support.
"Aw, and I thought you were getting close, too..." Sylvie says, pouting.
"Sorry, but my legs..." you say, trying to shake the awful feeling out of them.
"Don't worry about it. Like I said, most people have trouble with doing it the first time. Just keep it up, and you'll get it eventually!" Sylvie looks at you, a wide smile on her face. "It's getting late though, so I guess I'll end the lesson here," she says as she helps you regain your balance.
"Yeah, thanks," you reply, finally able to stand properly again.
"You can keep on trying on your own time, though. Just tell me if you get it when I'm not around."
"Will do," you say with a salute.

With that, the two of you say your goodbyes and go in opposite directions.

I'd say leave at least 20 % like Sylvie. It's not like we had a chance of catching up to or indeed even keeping up with her - much like she would not best us at swordmanship.

You sit down at your desk and pick up "A gentleman's guide to sensitive ladies," figuring that it might be useful in helping you better deal with the Princess. It seems to be less a guide for bachelors and more a guide for the fathers of teenaged daughters, and a lot of the advice in it seems kind of counterintuitive. "Keep asking her what's wrong, even if she tells you that everything is alright?" What? Wouldn't that just make her mad at you?

But even though a lot of it makes very little sense initially, you start to grasp the overall logic in its advice... mostly seeming to be that "girls are insane." Finishing off the book, you place it on your desk and ponder what to do next.

Remembering what Sylvie just taught you, you sit on the floor, close your eyes, and try to clear your mind of all thoughts...

No swords.

No angry princesses.

Nothing.

You can feel your consciousness expand, and you are aware of everything around you. The jacket that you messily tossed on a chair, the lingering smell of graphite from your sketchbook, and even the sound of your own muscles contracting to keep you sitting upright.
Then you open your eyes, and... you still feel that sense of awareness. Deciding that you might as well, you say the first word that pops in your head...

"Sword."

And then, you see it! That same strange glowing red Script that you watched Sylvie form not even an hour ago! Excited, you jump up, and... fall over.

Your legs fell asleep again, but you were so deep in meditation that you didn't even notice. But that doesn't matter! As you lay sprawled on the floor, you try getting into that same state of mind again, and...

"Floor."

It works again! You weren't even really meditating that time, either! Sylvie wasn't kidding at all when she said that it was easy to do once you did it the first time!

Completely satisfied with your new achievement, you use your upper body strength to pull yourself onto your bed and fall fast asleep.
