Don't know what Valkyria Chronicles is? Check it out here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria_Chronicles or http://valkyria.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyria_Wiki

You are LUCAS WILLIAMS, a member of the mercenary company Demons of Randgriz and a graduate from its elite TIER ONE Program. You are now part of the elite, but inexperienced WRAITH TEAM, consisting of you and your fellow classmates from training.

After a grueling year of training and quick battle to get rid of some troublesome pirates harassing Gallia's northern coast, you and Wraith Team have found yourselves transferred to the exotic land of San Salvacion, an entire ocean away from Gallia. You've been brought in to help the beleaguered country suppress the rebels that oppose its rule, as well as counter any possible Erusean aggression from the South.

Unfortunately, the action started much sooner than you thought it would when your base was ambushed literally almost the moment you set foot in it. While the attackers were repulsed, the attack has left you and your squad a bit shaken that presumably poorly armed and organized rebels could strike at the heart of San Salvacion's military power in the south so easily.

Unfortunately, it seems the situation is getting more and more complicated as more players in this conflict begin to reveal themselves...

"You see," Hudson sighs as he sits down again. "Viktor Reznov is pretty much a legend in the Empire, and in most parts of Yuktobania. Did a lot of serious shit in EWII alongside his buddy Dimitri Petrenko, who was probably even more famous than Reznov himself."

"Whoa, wait, how come I've never heard of these guys before?" You ask.

"I suspect they didn't remain 'heroes' for long?" Menendez surmises.

"Yep. As you know, even though EWII ended in a draw, the Empire pretty much came out as the loser in that conflict. Discontent was hitting record highs, not only in the civilian populace but in the military as well. A lot of the soldiers blamed their loss on their leaders, and Prince Maximilian going off and fumbling the invasion of Gallia didn't help matters, either. Plus add in the fact that the Empire didn't have the money to pay off all its soldiers, and you've got a clusterfuck waiting to happen."

"And I assume Reznov and Dimitri were at the head of this 'discontent'?" Menedez asks.

"I don't really know, but whatever the case, the Empire head honchos didn't want to take any chances. Due to their status as heroes, they were some of the first to get rounded up in the purges and got sent to a prison camp. They both then hatched an escape plan. Reznov made it, Dimitri didn't."

"Vorkuta, the place was called." Reznov's gravelly voice startles you. "If you wanted to talk about my past, you could have simply asked."

"Well gee, Reznov, you can probably guess why people don't think you're the talkative type." Hudson sighs.

"True enough." The old Imperial soldier laughs a bit. "Come, sit for a while and listen. To truly understand my hate, you must understand how important a man Dimitri was to me..."

ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL

You are Sergeant VIKTOR REZNOV, a proud soldier of the Imperial Army with a huge machete to grind with Yuktobania. After all, you have several outstanding grudges to settle with them due to crimes committed in EWI, the least of which involved the invasion and destruction of your hometown, and the murder of your father, who was only a simple musician at the time.

And so you joined the army and waited for you chance, until finally the Emperor himself gave the order to commence EWII. After all these years, you had your chance to wreak your terrible vengeance on that nation of liars and murderers.

As a result, you instantly volunteered to join the vanguard unit that would press into Yuktobania. You didn't care that your army was poised to assault one of Yuktobania's most fortified border cities, Bastok. By the Valkrur, you would shed Yuktobanian blood this day or you would die trying!

And as if you weren't further blessed this day, your unit was even being personally accompanied by a Belkan Knight. Truly, you were destined for victory today!

"Sergeant Reznov." You hear her voice and raise your head. Surely, Sir Reinhardt was a magnificent woman and officer, as she had taken the time to remember not only your name, but the names of your comrades as well!

"To what do I owe this honor, Milady?" You bow deferentially.

"Reznov, I must ask you to reconsider your plan of attack." Isolde frowns as she looks across the river separating the Imperial army from the city of Bastok itself. "I mean, your plan is sound, but it's..."

"Suicidal? Milady, there can be no victory without sacrifice. That is what it means to be an Imperial soldier!"

"Yes, but," Isolde sighs, "crossing upriver and assaulting the city's flank is insanely dangerous. You do realize that if anything goes wrong, the rest of the army won't be able to support you?"

"If my death would get even one Imperial soldier safely across that river, I would gladly accept it." You say proudly. "Do not pray for me, Milady. Pray for the poor Imperial souls killed by these murderers!"

Isolde just looks at you sadly. "As you wish, Reznov. Just... don't die."

"If you command it." You bow again.

You then rush over to where your men are waiting. Like you, all of the men in the vanguard unit suffered great loss at the hands of Yuktobania in the last war, and all of them were eager to get into the fight, even if they would most likely die in the process.

"The men are ready to go, sir." Corporal Chernov announces. You personally didn't like Chernov all that much. You felt he was a bit too soft hearted to be a true soldier, but you needed all the warm bodies you could get. "Sir, I do have a concern."

"Chernov," You sigh. "If you give me bullshit about the odds of survival again-"

"No, I mean I think there's a more effective way to attack the city."

Well, at least Chernov was smart, which was also why you hadn't booted him out of the unit yet.

"See, there's a train depot a bit further up the river from our crossing point." Chernov points to a circle on the map. "It's a big detour, but if we can hijack a train from there, we can get directly into the middle of the city!"

"My god, Chernov, you actually came up with a good idea!" You slap the man on the back. "Ready the transports! We leave immediately!"

As Chernov shuffles away, you stand upon a pile of ammo crates and yell to get their attention.

"MEN OF THE EMPIRE! Today we shall avenge our fathers and spill the blood of their murderers on their very own soil!"

Your gathered men cheer, giving off their signature battle cry.

"URRRRAAAA!!!"

"Remember our plan, comrades! What is Step 1!?"

"STEP ONE. CROSS THE RIVER!"

"Yes! In their haste the fools have left one of the bridges unguarded! We will make them pay for that mistake!"

With that, you men begin piling into the trucks. Meanwhile, the tank squadron assigned to support you begins to rev up their engines. The squadron mostly consisted of very old light tanks, but they were in good working order and would serve your purposes well.

You decide to ride in the trucks with your men. After all, they needed guidance and leadership if they were to carry the day.

As you drive forward, you begin to lead your men into singing old Imperial war songs. The same ones their fathers and their fathers before them sang when they marched off to battle. Soon, their great roar drowned out even the sounds of the mighty tanks as you drove through the Yuktobanian countryside. There were small knots of civilians you would pass by, who would give you the biggest looks of utter confusion. However, you did not stop. You had no time to deal with such petty nuisances right now.

As your scouts had reported, the bridge in question was completely unguarded. Thankfully, in their bid to retreat to Bastok as quickly as possible, the Yuktobanians had forgotten to destroy all the nearby river crossings. However, this was a relatively small bridge, just barely able to fit your trucks and light tanks. You doubt a medium tank could have fit on it. However, with no guards present, you easily cross unmolested and turn to head toward the rail depot. Unfortunately, the depot was more likely to be guarded.

"STEP TWO. TAKE THE TRAIN!"

With that, over a hundred Imperial soldiers, supported by five light tanks, go charging over the hill separating you from the train depot. "FORWARD, MEN!" You scream, your blood pumping.

"But sir, they are retreating!" Chernov protests. "You would want us to shoot them in the back?"

"I don't care where they are shot as long as they are dead, Chernov!" You yell and point at the fleeing guards. "FIRE!"

A hundred guns and five tank cannons roar, unleashing fury and hellfire on the depot. You smile with grim delight as you see Yuktobanians being gunned down or hurled through air. There's also the side effect of the depot now going up in flames, which was good. It's not like you were going to need it after you got what you wanted.

It takes another hour for your men to get a train prepared and to load it up.

"Sir, maybe we should see what's in the other trains?" Chernov asks. "If there were guards here, that means they were guarding something valuable, no? Perhaps we can find something useful..."

You then raise your machete proudly in the air as your men cheer.

---------------------------------

Meanwhile, several Yuktobanian guards are milling about in Bastok Central Station, ready to receive a shipment of supplies in preparation for the coming Imperial siege. However, they were assured by General Amsel that things would be fine, and that the Imperials wouldn't even cross the river, much less breach the shore fortifications.

"Huh, that's weird, the train is early." One of the guards frowns.

"Better than begin late." The guard captain grumbles. "Okay, let's get ready to receive shipment.

"S-sir, don't you hear something?" One of the guards asks.

"What? You mean the train? Of course I can hear it. We already know it's coming!" The captain sighs.

"No, it's not that. Something else, can't you hear it?"

The captain, deciding to humor the man, steps up to the train as it comes to a screeching halt on the platform, and the he hears it.

Is that... singing?

Two weeks later, and the Battle of Bastok was still raging. Thanks to your efforts, and great sacrifices of your men, you managed to cause enough of a distraction that Isolde's main attack force was able to cross the river and breach the defenses. Now Imperials and Yuktobanians battled throughout the streets, and you are currently attempting to link up with the main force with what's left of your men, which was just you. Many of your men were now in the proud company of their forefathers, and you lost track of Chernov in the confusion. Your radio crackles to life again, a good sign that you were getting closer to friendly lines.

"Hello? Hello?! Can anybody hear me on this channel!?!" You hear a panicked voice on the radio.

"Speak comrade, what is your situation!?" You reply.

"Thank god!" You hear the other voice sigh. "This is Private Dimitri Petrenko! Our unit is trapped in the shopping center and we are under fire! The Yuktobanians have us surrounded and are trying to collapse the building on us!"

The cowards those Yuktobanians were! Being buried alive was no dignified death for a soldier!

"Dimitri, who is in charge of your unit?" You ask.

"I... I think I am, sir." Dimitri replies.

"Dimitri, I am Sergeant Viktor Reznov, and I promise I will save you and your men! You must hold out until I get there, do you understand!?"

"Y-yes sir!"

With that, you heft your captured Federation SMG (your old one had long run out of ammunition) and sprint your way to the city's main shopping center. Sure enough, you can see the building being mercilessly shelled by Federation tanks and artillery, and you can see sporadic gun and lance fire from the windows. Just like Dimitri feared, it looked like the building would come down at any minute.

And then... and then you see HIM.

General Amsel.

The man who killed your father!

Like the cowardly creature he was, he was sitting well away from the conflict in a fortified command post, safe from any potential danger. You could see him directing the shelling and actually LAUGHING as the building slowly crumbled.

You shake your head to clear the cloudiness. You made a promise to Dimitri, and Viktor Reznov was NOT a man who went back on his word!

There were too many tanks and artillery to take out by yourself, but all you need was to open up a gap in the lines. Just enough so that Dimitri and his men could make their escape. You just needed to figure out a way. Just ahead, you could see the tanks, vulnerable from the rear and with their infantry support looking the other way. Farther down, you can see several lances that had been set aside. On the other end you could see a Federation radio set sitting virtually unattended.

AFTER stealing a lance, we can grab a tank, and fire the lance from the driver's hatch.

However, as you near the cache of lances, you see a pair of Yuktobanian soldiers walk by, threatening to derail your plans.

Your attack is a bit messy, but it gets the job done. Your first swing disables the closest soldier, slashing his throat. He goes down clutching his throat as the second man tries to bring his gun in line. However, you're faster, and knock the gun out of line with your machete and punching him in the face with your other arm. The man falls on his back and you finish him with multiple swings of your machete.

Wasting no time, you dash over to where the lances are sitting and pick the first one up. You would need to make every shot count.

You pick and fire the four lances in quick succession, and the lance rockets fly off into the distance. The closest two tanks are the first to go, exploding in large, satisfying fireballs. However, the last two don't suffer and significant damage, but their fire rate is interrupted as they try to figure out what is going on.

"Now is your chance, Dimitri! Evacuate from the East exit!" You yell.

You see several Imperial soldiers begin to run out of the door when you hear a deafening, boom sound. It sounded like an oncoming train, except no trains had run in Bastok after you set the central station ablaze...

And that's when you realize the Federation forces surrounding the building are starting to pull back, and the cold realization hits you.

"GET DOWN!" You screaming, waving your arms frantically.

(cont)
>>
>>27477768
At that moment, the biggest artillery shell you have ever seen lands on the shopping center. What was once a four story building explodes and falls apart like it was made of paper. Without thinking, you rush forward to assist the soldiers that managed to escape.

"Are there any more men inside?! Is Dimitri with you?!" You ask frantically.

"Dimitri was still... inside." One of the soldiers coughs as the dust cloud from the explosion rolls over you all. "He insisted to be the last man out..."

You dash over to the still smoking crater that used to be the building. The debris is still smoldering and it burns your hands as you dig.

"Dimitri! Dimitri! Do you hear me!?!" You yell.

Suddenly, a hand bursts out from the rubble, grasping in the air. You instinctively grab it and pull.

"Dimitri, is that you?" You ask.

"Y-yes." Dimitri coughs and spits to clear the dust out of his mouth. "Is that you, Reznov? Where are your men?"

"Dead." You say. "But they died fighting. Can you still fight, comrade?"

"Yes, I think so..." Dimitri says. "W-what happened?"

"You cheated Death, my friend!" You laugh. "The entire building falls on top of you yet you crawl out with nothing but bumps and bruises! You are a blessed man, Dimitri!"

As you ruffle through the refuse, you feel Dimitri's tap on your shoulder. "Reznov, look what I found!"

You turn to see Dimitri grinning as he hands you a small, leather bound book.

"What is this?" You ask.

"Their radio codebook!" Dimitri says excitedly. "With this, we know their frequencies and passcodes! We can patch into their communications!"

"You are a genius, Dimitri!" You laugh. The fools, in their haste, must have forgotten to take or destroy the item. You take out your short range radio and fiddle with the settings according to what is written in the notebook.

"-treating to Post 3." You catch a grizzled Yuktobanian voice talking. "I repeat. Able is retreating to Post 3."

You rifle through the pages of the book trying to find the relevant notes and laugh. They might as well have just yelled over a loudspeaker where Amsel was headed.

"Amsel has retreated to another command post a kilometer from here." You say, pointing at your tattered map. "That would put him in the city's central park. No doubt the best place to command from, and hide from the main battle."

"No," you shake your head, "I want to see his face when I kill him. It is the least I can do for his countless victims."

"Then perhaps we can use it as our distraction." Dimtri says. "We can use it to wipe our their frontline, and then we make our move."

"Yes, that will work." You nod. "Actually, can you even speak Yuktobanian?"

"Enough." Dimitri shrugs.

"Well, I can't speak any, so it'll have to do." You sigh. "Unleash hellfire on them, Dimitri!"

Dimitri nods and coughs a bit as he activates his radio.

"Gustav, Gustav, do you read me?"

"This I Gustav." The Yuktobanian on the other side replies.

"Gustav, I am requesting fire support on Grid Four."

"I-Isn't that where Able is located?" The operator gasps.

"Don't you understand?! The Imperials are pushing our line and we're in danger of being overrun! Do you think I'd call you if it weren't serious!?"

Dimitri then raises the mic to you and you get the idea. You fire your SMG wildly.

"Death to the Federation! Glory to the Empire! URRAAA!!!"

"See!? They're literally right on top of us!" Dimitri screams.

"A-alright! Firing for effect!" The other man says in a panicked tone.

You then hear a distant WHUMP as the super massive gun fires in the distance. There's a very familiar sound of a freight train incoming. Even though the shell lands a kilometer away, you can still the feel the shockwave as it ripples through both the air and the ground.

At that moment, the Federation frequencies start to go wild.

"Now is our chance!" Dimitri yells.

"TO VICTORY!" You yell, charging right where the massive shell had just fallen.

No, you were so close. You would NOT let him escape again! Channeling all your fury, you take your machete and throw it at Amsel's fleeing form, catching him right in the middle of his back. His scream of pain distracts his bodyguard just enough to give Dimitri the opening he needs, kneeing his opponent in the groin before snapping his neck.

Now it was just you and Amsel.

"Well, hello there, old friend." You say happily as you follow Amsel. The poor fool is STILL trying to crawl away rather than accept his fate. Spineless coward. You stop and pull the machete out of his back, eliciting a pained yelp. You then flip him around and pick him up by the collar so you can see him face to face. "DO YOU REMEMBER ME?"

Amsel just shakes his head, too terrified to speak.

"I am Vicktor Reznov, and I will have my revenge!" You yell, pulling Amsel's right arm out and shearing it off at the elbow with your machete. Amsel screams as blood spurts from his severed arm. "Do you hear their cries, Amsel? The cries of all those you have MURDERED, demanding your blood? Well, today is the day they shall have it!"

"P-p-please!" Amsel sputters. "I'll do anything! Anything! Just stop!"

"Anything?" You knell down next to Amsel. "Do you remember that village twenty years ago, Amsel? The one you burned to the ground? The one that wasn't even in your line of advance, but you decided to take a detour to demolish it anyways? The one where a simple musician tried to talk sense to him, and you rewarded him with a bullet to head?"

Amsel stays silent.

"DO YOUR REMEMBER?!" You yell, chopping off Amsel's left arm.

"Y-YES! I REMEMBER!" Amsel screams. "I-I-I was just following orders!"

"Dmitri, I believe you should have the honor." You say, presenting the disabled Amsel to him. "Show him his punishment as you deem fit."

Dmitri looks down at the wounded and dying Amsel. Sure, the blood loss from his severed arms would eventually kill him, but there were worse ways to go. Much worse. Without a word, Dmitri reaches into his pack, and pulls out a molotov cocktail. You nod in approval as Dmitri slowly lights it.

"No, what are you doing!??" Amsel sputters. "I'm a prisoner of war! You're not supposed to treat prisoners this way!"

"You are a MURDERER, Amsel, and you will be treated as one!" You bark back. By this point, Dmitri has lit the cocktail and tosses it casually at Amsel. The flaming liquid explode sin a burst of flame and Amsel screams long and hard. As it should be.

"My men and our fathers have been avenged." You nod. "Did that make you feel better, Dmitri? To know the man who killed your men so callously is now dead?"

"Yes... yes it does, actually." Dmitri nods.

"Good! Because there will be plenty more where that came from!" You say, motioning to the now numerous angry Yuktobanian soldiers closing in.

"I think we can take them." Dmitri says.

"Of course!" You laugh as you cut off Amsel's charred head and stuff it into your pack as macabre trophy. "UUURRRAAAAA!"

"And we killed every last one of them by the time Isolde and her reinforcements arrived!" Reznov laughs.

"Actually, it was more around fifty." Hudson sighs. "That number gets bigger every time he retells the story."

"Do not rob an old man of his chance to impress his juniors!" Reznov frowns. "But yes, that was the day me and Dmitri first met. We were gods of the battlefield, him and me. Whatever the Yuktobanians threw at us, we merely laughed and kept fighting! We were Death's chosen avatars, meant to sow death and destruction among our enemies, and how glorious it was!"

"And that thing you said before.. about feeling better killing Amsel. Was that true?" Menedez asks.

"Yes. Every word. It was very liberating."
Reznov nods.

"I was afraid of that..." Menedez sighs. "If you'll excuse me, it seems like the time as flown and I must get back to my duties."

"Shit, team really HAS flown." Hudson frowns as he checks his watch. "Come on, Reznov. We got to prep for the next mission."

"You go on ahead, Hudson. I will stay here for a little while longer."

After Hudson walks off, it's just you and Reznov in the tent.

"You... I like you." Reznov nods. "You remind me a bit of Dmitri, actually. Young, bright, and brimming with potential. You look to be a man marked by Fate, little one. Let us hope you live long enough to see what she has in store for you."

You probably only have time for one last question. You'd better make it good.

>What happened to Dmitri?

A hero doesn't just disappear no questions asked Reznov. What happened?

>Goodnight
finally the storytiem is over.

"Hey Reznov, what exactly happened to Dimitri?" You ask. You don't recall anybody really specifically elaborating what happened to him beside something terrible.

"Well..." Reznov sighs, looking impossibly tired all of a sudden. "After EWII, Dmitri had had grown sick of war, and I could not blame him. The things we had seen and endured would have utterly broken lesser men. Once the war was over, Dmitri wanted to start a family. Live in peace. But alas, our cursed leaders had different ideas."

"They arrested you both."

"That implies we had done something wrong!" Reznov spat. "Perhaps, that would be a fitting end for me. I have done many terrible things, but Dmitri, he was a true Hero of the Empire! He did not deserve the fate he got!"

"What happened?"

"After we were arrested, we were taken to Vorkuta, the Empire's most infamous and feared prison camp. Everybody eventually found their way there. Darcsens, criminals, political prisoners, everybody. And once they enter, nobody leaves. It is a horrid place, fit more for beasts than men." Reznov shakes his head as if to try and clear some bad memories. "I met Dmitri there. He told me they had taken his family too. Either dead, imprisoned, or worse, and he was desperate to leave. We made plans, arrangements, until Dmitri was picked up by the guards for reasons I still don't know. Either way, I continued with the plan. We started a mass riot and burned the entire camp to the ground. I made my way to the predetermined rendezvous we had arranged in case we got separated and... and..."

At this point, for the very first time since you saw him, you can see Reznov on the verge of tears.

"There he was, lying in the snow, a single shot to the heart. Shot down like a dog. No hero deserves that!"

"I-I'm sorry." You blink. "I didn't know it was that bad."

"Now... now only rage fuels me." Reznov simmers. "The men in charge of that camp, who were responsible for our arrest in the first place. They managed to escape, but the will pay, just like Amsel did. Hear me out, young one, and remember these names. Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner. These three men must die."

You don't know what to say. You just absentmindedly nod until you realized something.

"What about Dmitri's family?" You ask.

"I do not know." Reznov sighs. "In the camp, I made a promise to Dmitri that if he did not make it, I would care for his family. But... there are no records of them anywhere, not even a name or a picture. The Empire did a good job of making sure they never existed."

>Well, we've got some pretty good spies on our side. Maybe they can find something.
>Well, I hope you get your revenge.
>I'm sorry for your loss. Dmitri sounded like a really great guy.

You're right, no hero deserves to die like that. My parents got lucky now that I think about it, they fought long and hard and got the peace and long lives they deserved. I wish your friend could have gotten the same.

...why do I have this sinking feeling that Morgan's the one he's looking for?

Because of reasons.

"Well, we've got some pretty good spies on our side. Maybe they can find something." You say hopefully. "I mean, Auntie Elizabeth is one of the best spies in Europa. She can pretty much find anything!"

"If only I still had your youthful optimism." Reznov sighs. "But any help I can get will be appreciated."

"And you're right, no hero deserves to die like that. My parents got lucky now that I think about it, they fought long and hard and got the peace and long lives they deserved. I wish Dmitri could have gotten the same."

"I do too." Reznov nods.

"And I'm sorry for your loss. Dmitri sounded like a great guy. Probably would've even made a great Demon. Actually, I would have loved to meet Dmitri myself."

"If only." Reznov slowly gets up. "Well, I believe you've heard enough of an old man's lamentations. I must be going. But... thank you for your words. Hearing you say them lifts a little of that weight off my heart, to know that at least one person will remember Dmitri in the way he deserves."

With that, Reznov walks out of the tent, leaving you all alone.

Seeing that you were still really tired, and it was getting dark, you decide it's time to get some sleep. However, you don't return to your tent, and instead keep walking until you reach Lucina's.

"Hey... Lucina, are you in there?" You ask.

"Yes. What is it, Lucas?" Lucina pokes her head out of her tent and looks at you. "Is something wrong?"

"N-no. Nothing." You say, rubbing the tears out of your eyes. "Hey, you think we could sleep together again, like last time? Just lay down on the grass outside? It feels like an eternity since we last did that."

"Yeah, sure." Lucina blinks. "Why now all of a sudden?"

"Ah... no reason. No reason at all."

>And that's it for tonight! Boy, we ran a lot later than intended, didn't we? Well, we've still got another thread! Tune in Sunday evening 7-8pm PST!
