What is your opinion on Liches, /tg/?

Could you be friends with a Lich? Could you love a Lich?
>>
>>27509610
>Could you love a Lich?
Maybe. If the lich either took good care of herself and embalmed her corpse so she stayed mostly intact, or if she's fully skeleton-mode, I think I could.

But the icky half-rotten version of a lich would just be too gross for romance.
>>
Liches ain't shit but bones and crypts.

But I was thinking more from an aesthetic perspective. A bleached and polished skeleton wearing flowing black robes is basically /fa/'s ideal.

I smell an adventure seed.

• An attractive nubile female dissapears every month or so.

• Body remains found are only skeletons or decayed "flesh suits", but always separate.

• Some sick bastard is making the suits for his lich girlfriend to wear so he can get his rocks off.
>>
>>27509610
Sort of.
While the undead aren't automaticly horrible people the lichdom ritual requires doing horrible things so most liches are horrible people.
>>
>>27510096
I feel like it would be a lot easier, cleaner, and less undignified for the lich if you just got some sort of fleshlight type of apparatus and attached it to her pelvis for sexytime.

You could also have a Lich that's gradually gotten obsessed with the sensation of flesh.

"Being surrounded by that warmth, that sensation of being, I find myself missing it."

The disappearances would be getting less frequent as the Lich perfects his/her techniques for preserving the suits.

"I really don't see what the problem is; 5, maybe 10 more tries and I'll be able to keep the suits alive indefinitely. Then I'll only have to replace them for wear and tear. Given the rate at which humans breed it's totally sustainable harvesting."

I also kind of like the idea of fighting the lich, defeating it and rescuing a captive. Someone makes a spot check and attacks the prisoner. Splitting her face open to reveal an animated skeleton with glowing eyes. "Damn it; this was my best one"
>>
>>27510387

>>
>>27511300
This game is basically what would happen if /tg/, /v/, and /pol/ all collaborated on a project. It is excellent on a multitude of levels.

The RTS element is shit, but you don't actually have to engage in that bullshit as long as your turn-based tactics are sound.
>>
>>27511317
> you cant have her as a skeleton
Wow what a shitty fucking shitpile of a fucking game.
>>
>>27511317
To advance her stroy, true. However, you can simply refuse to advance her story.

Of all the waifus, she has the largest variety of final forms: hot chick, that same hot chick but a vampire, a warforged hot chick, or a warforged hot chick with the human hot chick's skin sewn onto her.

Plus, picking her gets you favor with the skelebros, who are the best faction. She is easily the best waifu.

Do not be fooled by the dorfwife's massive tits, she is annoying as shit. Also, she puts away her tits when you finish her storyline, which is annoying as fuck, because her tits were the only reason I married her in the first place. I fed her to the demon for that.
>>
>>27511317
Just don't turn her into the other things. When she asks for help turning into something else, ignore her ass. Bam, skeleton wife forever.

The undead are the religious conservative faction, and her storyline has her stray from their ways and beliefs. The change in her attire is symbolic of this. The dwarf and elf wives do the opposite, starting off dressing slutty then becoming more conservative as they become the rulers of their people. Lizardbitch remains Lizardbitch forever, because she's Lizardbitch.

We were discussing D&D alignment in my party, and how it consists of absolute morality, not logical ethics, and the example of how a Lich cannot be good even if it becomes a lich for a completely benevolent reason. This one girl in our party was like, "I don't see why you couldn't just be a good lich."
"Because in D&D morality, the act of creating a phylactery is by definition a heinously evil act."
"What about a heinously good act?"

Certainly, a Lich makes a better friend than a Vampire: able to hang out during the day having fun scaring the fuck out of people as a skellington and not constantly fantasizing about drinking your blood; for these reasons, a Vampire would make a better lover.
>Would totally befriend lich.
>>
If I was a wizard in a fantasy realm I wouldn't mind becoming a lich so long as it didn't involve murdering babies or anything like that. I mean the perks are awesome, live forever, can't be killed permanently unless phylactery is destroyed, no need to eat, sleep or poop, insane magical power...

About the only cons I can think of are you freak people out because you are after an undead floating skeleton and no sexytimes with the ladies. Of course not having genitalia or hormones you might just not have a sex drive which really might be for the better.
>>
>>27513434
You are a powerful wizard. Polymorph self, plow babes. Its a no brainer
>>
>>27513481
Hmm this begs the question why don't all liches just permanently polymorph themselves into fleshy bodies and have all the benefits with none of the drawbacks? Or for that matter why can't they just create a spell that keeps their body from rotting away in the first place.
>>
>>27513535
The desire to have a fleshy body is a fleshy desire. With no flesh, desires change.

And that spell is Gentle Repose
>>
>>27510173
The question isn't, "Can it be done;" it's, "Could YOU do it?"
>>
>>27513535
Perhaps maintaining the self polymorph requires an amount of concentraion. If you cast a big spell it could break for example.

>>27513743
No idea but I don't think it comes into play since you would be recasting polymorph at least once a day so you could just transform into a young person each time.

An even better option would be get a feat that gives you spontaneous metamagic or a metamagic rod then cast a persistent shapchange on yourself once a day. You can now not only look like a fleshy human all day but change into almost anything you want every six seconds.

Have you ever been sick with hot sweats or had a fever where you were too weak to do anything?

That's what happens when you fuck her with a spiritual condom of fucking on, she rides you, because Ghost rider.

The shape of her sex organs and living female aesthetics is shaped by the flames, and her penance stare will make you additionally feel the vaginas of the women you've scorned.

Usage of tentacles are optional.

There, I've detailed sex with flaming skeletons.

Actually, fuck it, as long as one sees the aesthetics for human genitalia of any object, they can fuck it.

Liches, for example, have that thing where after images of their selves when alive flash in their color of aura so you'd have that flash in and out as you pound it, or like with ghost rider, the aura provides the female outline.

In other words, if you want to fuck a real-life skeleton without feeling like you're into necrophillia, pay for a sexy realdoll with transparent skin, save for eyes, lips, tits, nipples, and vag in more cloudy shades to be made around a skeleton of your choosing.

>"What about a heinously good act?"

Self-sacrifice is usually said to be the most benevolent and altruistic act a person can do. (Though that raises questions of whether true altruism is possible).

So sacrificing the luxury of flesh to save a town/city/planet, allows you to be transformed into an undead skeleton horror, whose basic instincts want him to breath, eat, defecate and feel, yet is incapable of doing so.

Hell, I damaged my radial nerve in my arm over the summer, and for a while lost sensation in parts of it. It was the most uncanny thing not being able to feel with it.

I can't imagine what it would be like to have a body that you can't feel with. It would be like controlling a machine.

Polymorph isn't some kind of healing spell that you have full control of, it recognizes what kind of physical state you were in before you morphed.
Say you lost your arm and an eye in a battle, sure changing into a dragon would make you incredibly powerful and awed in all the land, but you still trip every time you tried to walk and your eye would still be missing.

So you'd think that even if lizardshit Mchooman polymorphed into a human fleshy or not described they'd suddenly stand there, face shorter and probably pretty ugly to the lizards standards.

From a purely utilitarian perspective, human sacrifice is morally justified to create a lich. The sacrificial victim had a finite number of years of life ahead of him or her, but by taking this life from him or her, a lich is created with a theoretically infinite lifespan.

It's a net win for the world.
>>

Dragonborn are just horribly mutated hybrids between a dragon and whatever race that wanted to be more dragony. • Wish's material components cost 25,000 gp. The ritual for Lichdom costs 120,000 gp. No competent DM is going to allow that.

• The only thing in the entry for Wish that would allow it is the one that reads: "You may try to use a wish to produce greater effects than these, but doing so is dangerous. (The wish may pervert your intent into a literal but undesirable fulfillment or only a partial fulfillment, at the GM's discretion.)". So basically, it's a Monkey Paw. You should end up with a Forsaken Lich at best.

You forgot to mention the part that actually matters at all in your whole argument:

>When a wish duplicates a spell with a material component that costs more than 10,000 gp, you must provide that component (in addition to the 25,000 gp diamond component for this spell).

So yeah, while you could lich someone using wish, it isn't any less expensive, but it'll be more convinient, much like those little packets of juice with a straw.

In the book "Under The Dome" by Stephen King there is a character who has anger issues and terrible migraines.

He ends up killing two girls and throwing their corpses in a closet cold enough to slow down the deterioration.

A few days later he returns and sleeps on their cold corpses like a flesh bed, the coldness soothing his migraines so that he can actually sleep.

Just saying if you want an insane villain make him have some fascination with corpses or flesh

>>27525891
Does the human sacrifice count as a material component? How much does a human sacrifice cost? It might not be that much more convenient at all.

Not really. The journey to become a lich is different for each soul, the mind controller wouldn't know how to do it and wouldn't be able to control the spirit. Also, it takes years to learn the ritual and the ritual is unique for each soul. One really must be willing to journey that path or be Wished as a lich. Most rules state that the person must be willing.

Alright, so I have two ideas for a lich:

First one is your standard lich. He's sitting in a dungeon doing lich things and is basically what happens when Farnsworth gets access to /tg/. The party comes, kills him, and retrieves his phylactery to a local lord or something.

But it turns out, the Lich is "good," and was tasked long ago with keeping a magical mcguffith safe. But instead of giving it off to an apprentice or something, he just said "Screw it, I'm going to guard it myself," and became a lich.

Second one is a Pirate Lich:

He's a Pirate captain who wanted to be the Immortal King of Pirates. So he found a mage and, working together, they ascended him to Lichdom. He now goes around the seas, looting and killing and raising dead to add to his armada of ships. His phylactery is his ship, which is a mass of bones held together in the shape of a ship, or something.

Pirate themed Lich. That's the bottom line

What I want to know is, what asshole decided that Liches are default some variety of evil? The oldest lich myth basically went as follows:

>>

My point is, statistically there would have to be good liches. I mean, they would have to understand that they can't go out in public looking like they do, but they shouldn't have expected that anyway. The masses just aren't going to accept what is essentially an uberwizard capable of telling death to fuck right the hell off in the form of a spooky skeleton.
>>
>>27509610
I like lichs, if only for the really, really good BBEG material. If anyone remembers, Vecna was I believe a lich ascending to demi-godhood and was betrayed at the last minute. So there's that.

But being friends with one or being in love with one would be kind of a weird relationship. Think about it, you're pretty much a skeleton and have no tongue so you wouldn't be able to enjoy your favorite foods anymore. They'd just be watching you eat something all the time, staring at you and taking pleasure from it.
>TFW no more cheesecake, chocolate, Cheetos
>TFW no more pizza
>TFW no more bacon
>TFW no more beer

Also, if you have no more nerve endings, you won't be able to touch anything anymore. That means no more rollercoasters, no more cuddling dogs and cats (although, you might wanna avoid dogs anyways since they love to gnaw on bones and shit). There wouldn't even be no more sex for you. How could you feel the love of a woman if you don't have nerve endings, or even the necessary bits for it? it even means no more blowjobs They'd just be there watching you.....

11+ level caster. Sorcerers, Wizards, Clerics, Druids, BARDS, etc.

Some feat in Complete _____ gives you +4 to caster level (can't go above HD), so that means that Assassins, Paladins, Rangers, and all sorts of other fun characters can become liches as well

So what would be the best phylactery do you think?

I'd go with a diamond. So uh do you form from the phylactery or near it? Because if you form near it I'd totally put the diamond on/in my staff.

So have any of you actually made yourself a lich? I find the idea of all lichs being evil as ridiculous
>>

I'd go with a grain of sand or a normal pebble and leave it on a beach somewhere.

>So what would be the best phylactery do you think?

We've discussed this before and /tg/ came up with something very devious: making another lich (or part of him like his femur or whatever) your phylactery.

The result is a pact of two liches (or a ring if more are involved) where a sort of redundancy is established and you have to kill a lich to kill a lich to kill a lich.
>>
>>27528975

No it's ideal, you could go surfing to get over having your corporeal form destroyed.
>>
>>27528886
I'd probably make it a generic piece of granite or basalt and leave it on the top of a non-volcanic mountain.
>>
>>27529002

That means trusting another Lich or Liches for the remainder of your potentially eternal lives. I consider that to be pure foolishness. You have no idea what your relationship will be like in 5000 years.
>>
>>27529002
We were just arguing about that in this thread.
Can you point to a rule anywhere that says whether or not a phylactery that was destroyed remains your phylactery when it's reformed? Neither of us could, so it would basically be GM discretion, which could go badly.
>>
>>27529061

If it's just two then it's a M.A.D. situation. It could probably work out.
>>
>>27529002
But what if the first lich in the chain of liches dies. Since the first lich had to use a non-lich phylactery does that mean the other liches will perish as well? ( I mean phylactery destruction) and so if the first lich dies without phylactery destruction does that mean the other liches in the chain will die because their phylactery was destroyed. I AM SO CONFUSED
>>
>>27529061
>>27529002
Question: It was my understanding that destroying the phylactery of a lich auto-killed the lich, is this not true?
>>
>>27529121
It is not, at least in D&D and its derivatives. It just means that the lich is mortal until he/she/it makes a new one. Though some traditions allow time to catch up to a lich when their phylactery is destroyed, super-aging, and therefore killing, said lich.

>Can you point to a rule anywhere that says whether or not a phylactery that was destroyed remains your phylactery when it's reformed?

I'm pretty sure you have to remake the phylactery.

• Adventurers kill Lich A. Lich A's right femur was Lich B's phylactery and it has been destroyed.
• Contingency spell alerts Lich B, whose left pinky bone is Lich A's phylactery.
• Lich B takes precautions expecting the adventurers to show up at any moment, maybe even fleeing for he is just bidding for time.
• 1d10 days later Lich A reforms next to Lich B.
• Lich A and Lich B team up to annihilate the adventurers.
• Lich B recreates his phylactery.
>>
>>27529062
I would say no, if the phylactery ever stopped working I would assume that the soul is lost.
>>
>>27529170
Eternal life sure is fucking expensive.

Your gonna be using 125k and 4.5k exp everytime you die if thats the case. I'll just go with the darksteel ingot then thrown to the bottom of the sea.
>>
>>27529119
1. The chain is a circle. There is no first.
2. Phylactery destruction does not instantly kill liches. It just keeps them from respawning. If they make/choose a new phylactery before you kill them the old-fashioned way, they'll be just fine.

>>
>>27529121
Depends, but usually the phylactery contains the soul / life of the lich. Breaking it just makes that soul return to his body.
Or something.
>>
>>27529217

Maybe Lich B can charge Lich A for the gp costs? It *was* his fault for letting those meddlesome adventurers destroy him and the phylactery.

It could all be previously agreed on when they make the pact.
>>
>>27529251
Well in what D&D camapign are you going to manage to get not one but 2 liches
>>
>>27529312
also it takes several days for the phylactery to "rebuild" the body of the lich meaning Lich B isn't going anywhere or do anything for 2-12 days.

>>

>as you age time seems to speed up.

it has more to do with experiencing fewer "new things". anything that is routing doesn't exactly require your full attention and your brain goes to cruise control.
those bits of unusal buisness or new things will catch your attention and will probably be the only thing worth remembering during the day.

the older you get the less things worth remembering happen.

so i guess anything out of the unusual (like a close personal relationship) might stick out like a sore thumb in between all the mundane everday stuff in the mind of an immortal.

after a while it might even be the only thing left remembering for them.

>>
>>27530817
>but when you have had a hundred great loves and thousand close friends

Dude, that's not how you lich. Let me show you how it's done:
>be in love with the sweetest girl
>lose her to a terrible ailment/accident
>compare every other woman i meet to my lost love
>realize i will never be happy again
>spent the rest of my life trying to bring her back
>delve into the dark arts of necromancy
>do unspeakable things in the name of research
>old age creeping up on me
>take precautions to extend my life
>cross to unlife
>finally find the answer in undeath
>bring her back
>she is horrified by what i've become and what i've done to her
>it destroys me, but i put her back to rest after she begs me to set her free
>left alone stuck in undeath, everything i've loved and known is death
>people enter my grave to plunder and steal
>bitter and angry i kill them
>to my surprise i notice how it dulls my pain to inflict it onto others
>start making plans to make the rest of the world feel what i'm feeling
>at last in my suffering i won't be alone

Losing people leaves scars that won't heal. You can only fall in love so many times.
>>
Well, answering the original question: "Could you be friends with a Lich? Could you love a Lich?"
the answer is entirely possible for open minded people. You all seem to assume that "love" equals sex. Love is a mental state that does not necesserily involve/require sex.
Thus, there is no rational reason not to be able to love a lich. Of course, a crazy serial killer lich is another case, but there are people who are attracted to that, too, so that does not eliminate my point.

>mfw my 2000 character post doesn't survive submission for some reason.
>mfw I briefly rewrite the gist of these thoughts.

The Old City is the home of the Necromancers' Guild; the city is prosperous and the guild is not evil. In fact, the guild is dedicated to the greater good by improving the conditions of the living and strongly polices itself.

Initiation takes two years, during which initiates perform menial chores for the rest of the order alongside the mindless skeletons they may one day join. During these two years they are carefully educated by the guild about the price of joining, and given plenty of time to meditate upon this.

At the end of their initiation, they are tested, and those found worthy are given the opportunity to take the oath and join the guild as a novice. In the oath, they surrender themselves completely to the guild: mind, soul and (particularly) body; for, you see, bones of everyone who has sworn the oath are property of the guild, its dead members contractually obliged to serve the living members of the guild in undeath.

Many citizens of the Old City also volunteer their corpses to the guild's crypts in the hopes of serving in death the fine city which served them so well in life, for a great number of jobs are attended to by reanimated skeletons: the constabulary, sentinels, guards, sewer workers, lamplighters, laborers, longshoremen.... Every thankless and odious task is attended to by the bones of the departed.

Joining the NG gives you tremendous boons in life, but the price is eternal servitude after death. For this reason, a disgruntled minority of Old City cremate their dead.

DMs often forget that death is half of life.

The elves of the Golgari imo are the best interpretations of druids ever. Too bad Wizards didn't see it that way.
>>
>>27531050
Furthermore, there are no true "gods;" sure, there are soul-eating demons and alien horrors, but nothing a normal human could worship, expect help from or comfortably relate to.... Except, of course, for the human-looking gods of the Old City pantheon.

A few dozen human-looking gods & goddesses protect the Old City and their followers, each specializing in one aspect or another like Love, War, Trickery, Crafting, et cetera. Some have diametrically-opposed personalities & agendas, and all of them engage in friendly rivalry and vie for worshippers.

Their followers must never learn the truth: each "god" is really just an archlich in disguise, one of the most powerful liches of the Necromancers' Guild, polymorphed into a radiant, lifelike form recognizable to their clergy. They perform "miracles" with their magic, invest powers in the faithful clerics and paladins sworn to them, and generally keep the chaotic darkness of a misanthropic universe from swallowing humanity alive.

>or rather, just having an enchantment on your body that allows your bones to turn to dust and reform itself at will.
>>

>>27529002

Quick question: When a Lich reforms, are they nude when they do so, or do they have some articles of clothing that stick with them forever?

If the latter is true, make the phylacteries be the clothes that are bound to the Lich and not the Lich itself. So long as they don't immolate the entire Lich, or destroy the clothes, they should re-appear on the Lich when it reforms. Right?

I still like the idea of making the phylactery a measurement of molten gold, then turning it in to a coin and spending it somewhere. Good fucking luck finding the coin. Or, better yet, giving it to an old Wyrm for their hoard.

The whole "complete undead workforce that releives anyone of any physical labor" works as well out of paper as communism do.

First you are looking over the one thing that everyone ignores in all of these things, how people would act. First to think of is that not everyone is gonna selflessly work for a common cause and second, give a man power like a skeleton army and there's gonna be more or less a bigger chance of them using them wrong.

there's also the whole thing that when not supervised undead kinda go on a bloody rampage and no, you can't have them on supervision without hiring a large scale workforce and even then a single skelly running rampage cause it slipped could be a public danger.

And the guild is clearly as good as the russian goverment "sure you'll share everything, just give us full power and accept that only we aren't equal to you" which of course you remove full power with babies and innocent, you know to produce all those lich lords.

And other than a few gods disliking undead and the fact that most of the time they are just made dickbags there's not much stopping you since necromancers are like physics in fantasy, never really talked about in anything and never really thought on that much since they just assumed everyone would agree that necromancers would be pretty terrible people.
