So, let's see. Pretty eventful weekend- AWA was fun, even if I was out of place as hell, haha. Had fun regardless, spent WAY too much scrilla. Planefag's an amusing guy, though, called him fapangel most of the weekend, Took a picture with moot, so that's cool. anyway.

Archives are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
and there's a much shorter pastebin here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

the pastebin will get you up to speed enough to particapate with no problem. Of course, if you want to skip that too, just ask in the thread, if one of the guys doesn't help you out, I will!

++

You're thankful that the Soviets decided to build this base in the middle of the coldest chunk of habitable land they could find. Well, at least, that's how it seems to you.

Given your recent posting to sunny southern California, the place seems that much colder. Still, the cold air has probably been what's helped you push yourself to ten miles on a morning jog with Konstantina, who still barely talks to you- and still can't bring herself to actually look directly at you for more than a few seconds before looking at her shoes. It'd be cute, if you didn't remember she's also effectively promised to isolate you from your squadron because of their supposed proclivities involving you. How she can reconcile that view with her amusingly naive belief on where children come from is anyone's guess- perhaps she believes they're 'seducing' you into holding hands and sitting close? You're not sure, and not entirely sure you want to ask.

The problem, though is apparently ten miles isn't the end of her morning run. You like to think you've done pretty damn well, matching her brutal pace the entire time, but you're starting to slow down- mental tricks or no, you can't keep this up for another however many more miles she plans to run.

1/2
>>
Fortunately, she seems to notice, slowing her own pace to a walk. She looks at you for a second before looking down at her shoes. “My love, you do not have to feign weakness for my sake. We can easily continue, we are only halfway through my usual course. Perhaps you could lead? I understand if my pace was too slow for you.” she mumbles, not looking up.

Another ten miles is right out- you might be able to do it- maybe- but you'd be barely able to walk after that, and you do have things to do today. You think you could push yourself for another five, but it'd hurt pretty badly at the end and you're damn sure you'd want a nap in the afternoon, and you don't think you've got the time for it.

Of course, you're also positive she'd agree to cut her usual run short here if you told her to- she's both under orders and so far, been perfectly willing to accept that everything you've done so far, you've done for her benefit- and you're almost interested to see what kind of excuse she'll make up for you if you tell her ten miles is plenty.

After all the rich cooking we've been eating thanks to some squadmates of ours, we can afford to do some exercising, but 20 miles in freezing weather? I'd rather not get sick and have Konstantina play nurse...well, maybe I would.

[x] Split the difference and go for five more.

While you'd much rather just call it quits now, you also don't really want to give her any reason at all to think you're weak. While you're pretty sure she wouldn't- and would, in fact, more likely accept that you were quitting for her benefit, you'd also rather not test your luck.

“Five more, you lead.” You say, after a second's thought. “But we do have other things to do today.”

She nods. “I am sorry my darling, I did not think of that. I will set a quick pace.”

Her 'quick pace' turns out to be nearly a dead sprint- just shy of it, but definitely not sustainable over long distances. You're glad you skipped breakfast- you'd have thrown up for sure at about the end of mile three- but you finish the run out regardless, even managing to catch your breath on the walk back to your assigned suites- used for visiting VIPs, they're very, very nice, even if there's a pair of VDV troops on duty outside your door- and Stalinka typically in the lounge with you, drinking water and watching you when she thinks you aren't looking.

Her own rooms, as it turns out, are just across the hall from yours- even if she doesn't seem to sleep at all. She leads you there first, apologizing that she'll only take a minute.

Her rooms, while laid out almost identically to your own, are far more spartan in their furnishing. There's no pictures anywhere, and only a few paintings- mostly landscapes, the kind of thing you'd see in a hotel back home- hang from the walls.

She disappears back into her room, closing the door behind her with a slight blush when she looks back at you. You hear the shower turn on a minute later. You've got a couple minutes to look around if you want- or, you guess, you could just sit down and wait.

[x] Rather not get caught poking through something I shouldn't. Let's just sit.

Despite your curiosity about her, you'd really rather not have to answer to Stalinka why she caught you poking through her underwear drawer. Not that you expect to find it out here, but still.

You sit down on the couch in the lounge area- the suites both have a large central area, one that wouldn't be out of place in a five star hotel back home- that's bordered by one wall that separates the bedroom and bathroom, and an open kitchen and bar area. The back wall is glass, with a pair of sliding doors to an outside deck. You can't help but note that there's nothing on the deck here- not even the furniture present on your own. Maybe she had it all removed?

Despite the relative bareness of the room, there's a few things scattered about- most of them military in nature. An arms rack near the door holds the submachine gun you're so well acquainted with, along with one of those compact assault rifles- a kirnkov, if you remember correctly- and a dragunov rifle. A PKM machine gun and another weapon- far too big to be designed as a man portable system- round out the collection.

You wonder why you've never seen her use any of these weapons and shake your head- glad, at least, she's never seemed to have them.

The shower shuts off and she comes back out- clipping on a necklace under her dog tags. You don't get a real good look at it, but you could almost swear it's made of fibersteel. It's definitely the correct color for it.

>>
You cross the hall to your own room, exchanging a nod with the VDV guard at the door and ignoring the short exchange between him and Konstantina- though you can well guess what it entailed, given the laughter from the two guards afterward.

A quick shower later- and a change of clothes- and you're ready to go, grabbing your leather jacket- not the original, of course, that's still in Merlin's possession- but the second one you'd had made. The one that was supposed to be her christmas gift.

“Where do you wish to go first, my love?” Stalinka asks, looking at you briefly. “I know you will probably wish to talk to the... other... witches here on the base, and perhaps you will wish to tour their facilities. I am instructed to make sure you do not bother them in their private quarters, but I know that will not be a problem. Comrade General Putin also suggested you would perhaps like to tour the Lazarus facility and speak with one of the program heads. He also wished me to tell you that he has an offer he would like to extend in person, if you wish to hear it.”

The thing is about that situation: we never actually got to hear all of what she was going to say. The news was old news, a replay of what had happened weeks before Wittman talked to us. In fact, when she was starting to explain, Jake cut her off, understandably upset.

We'll never know now. That's the interesting thing about social interaction, sometimes people do something that they will later regret.

[x] “Let's go talk to the witches first. I'd like to get their impressions of this base.”

“Let's go talk to the allied witches first.” You say. “I'd like to get their impressions of this base.”

Konstantina wrinkles her nose. “My love, they will all only say what you wish to hear to please you. Are you sure you do not wish instead to talk to comrade Putin?”

“I'm going to need those witches' stories to have any hope of convincing my superiors that this isn't just some trick.” You say. “Besides, I doubt they'll be all that interested in trying to seduce me this early on.”

She looks at you like you're insane. “Darling, you are too modest. I am sure they will. But, we will do as you wish.”

Heading downstairs, you step outside and into a waiting staff car. Konstantina gives the driver his orders, and you pull away from your building, headed towards the Lazarus complex and the witch quarters near there.

“I must remind my love that he is asked to not bother witches that do not wish to talk to him.” She says, again looking down at the floor of the car. “I cannot imagine that they would not wish to talk to you, but some of them, especially the ones who have just recently undergone treatment, may be in pain still. They do not benefit from having been designed to be upgraded easily.”

1/2
>>
The witches are all housed in one large building- you suppose it makes defense easier, but it also seems to be one major target, putting all of them in one place like that. The door isn't guarded, but just inside, a quartet of VDV troops sit in an entryway, their weapons easily at hand. They look up and take you in, apparently not marking you as a threat, especially given your escort.

The building, for the most part, again reminds you of a middle to upper end hotel- the center is empty, allowing you to look up the ten or so floors to a skylight set above. The rooms ring this central space, which, on the bottom floor, houses what looks like a lounge with a small bar, and a fairly large dining area, with several tables surrounded by four to six chairs each.

“Many of them will be out using the recreational facilities.” Stalinka says. “There is a movie theater and a library available here, along with a few other things designed to help break monotony of being here.

Down in the lounge, a single witch is sitting on one of the chairs, leafing through a book, occasionally stopping to write something in a notebook of her own. The rest of the place, true to konstantina's word, seems empty, though you're sure, if you wait, you'll have plenty of chances to talk to other witches.

[] Let's go talk to the one who's here, see what she has to say.
[] Let's go do one of the other things, and come back here.

[x] Let's go talk to the one who's here, see what she has to say.

You decide that talking to the one who's here is probably the best option- afterall, you came to talk to witches, and not talking to witches seems silly. Besides, Putin will keep- you're sure you'll talk to him later.

You approach and set your bag down across from her, while Konstantina takes up a seat a respectful distance away- far enough that she doesn't appear to be eavesdropping, even if you're sure she is, but close enough to close the distance with you or the witch very quickly. You're not entirely sure if that's because she's being protective of you or if it's something else.

“Excuse me, Miss?” you say, sitting down, causing the witch to start. “I'm Commander Frank Bishop and-”

“You're not Russian!” she says, looking up at you. “Does this mean the war's over? Can I go home?”

A great war hero would be watched like a hawk and the fact that she had family means she wouldn't leave by herself either.

Whats more this facility is for rehabilitation and rebuilding of injured witches. There is nothing to suggest that sanya requires that sort of treatment.

[x] “The war's not over, but you might be able to go home. Can I talk to you a bit?”

You shake your head. “The war's not over, but you might be able to go home. Can I talk with you a bit?”

Her face falls slightly- disappointment is clear on her face, but you can tell she's trying to not let it shot. “Oh- well, I guess.” she says. “How can I help?”

“Well,” You say, leaning forward. “I wanted to talk to you about this base and what's going on here.”

She nods. “Well, I guess they think the martians are going to come back, and that the war is their fault and Stalin is under martian control.” She says.

“Do you believe that?” you ask.

She hesitates, then nods. “I-I guess, yeah. There's a lot of girls here who probably would be crippled for life if they hadn't been brought back here, and we're all from all over. My friends, Kathrine and Jacqueline are out, but Kathrine's German-American and Jackie's from the UK.”

“How do they treat you?” You ask, looking around. “This hardly looks like a POW camp.”

She frowns a bit. “Well, it is and it isn't. They all treat us very well, and we're allowed a lot of freedom here on the base, but we're not allowed to leave and we can't get messages out. They say it's to protect the base and us but it's still hard. I- I miss my family, you know?” She sniffs. “Sorry. It's just- I wish I could tell them I was still alive, at least.”

There's a good chance Putin doesn't have access to Sanya, and getting her out would not be subtle. He's far more likely to let one of the Lazarus witches go; at least Stalin (hopefully) doesn't know about them

Katya may very well never really forgive us. She's got a subtle jealous streak that showed during our interactions with Ice after we recovered from getting hurt. We've shattered her confidence in us by crashing the cat (not really our fault), we didn't talk to her about her being reassigned to Rosalie while the Styles twins got stuck to us, and now we've gone to Russia against her advice.

Ice will either be frosty again with us, at least initially. Daddy Fronk challenged her authority while ON MISSION, and has taken yet again another HUGE RISK, something she's been trying to curtail because she's desperate to not lose anyone, least of all the man she's starting to feel more than friendship towards.

Slider will be happy to see us again. She'll never admit it up front, especially since she supports Frank x Ice (though probably less so, now), but she definitely likes us. More than like. We brought her to tears when she was trying to tell us to chillax with the hero business. She's worried about us, will probably punch us when she sees us again, and kiss us later when she's certain nobody will catch her in the act. Danjaaaaazone...

> Give reassurance and get personal information.

Your first instinct is to hug the girl, but you decide that's probably overly familiar. Instead, you walk over, next to her chair, and put a hand on her shoulder, leaning in a bit.

“Listen,” you say, quietly. “I can't promise anything, but if I can, I'll get a list of names at least, to try and tell your families you're alive.”

She sniffs again. “Thank you. I'm sorry, it's just-”

You nod. “I know. It's ok. Now, what can you tell me? Who are you, how'd you end up here?”

“Oh! I'm sorry. I'm Ashley LaCroix-Bishop. Not those Bishops. ” She smiles when you start at the name. “That's how I felt when you introduced yourself.”

You laugh a bit. “Wonder if we're related?”

She shrugs. “Maybe. I was a Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Air Force- well, I guess I still am. I flew with Kathrine and Jackie out of some bases in Germany, mostly over the front near Berlin.”

You nod and she continues.

“I-I guess I just got careless. It was our third sortie of the day and all three of us were pretty low on magic at that point. We should have refused, but then I guess it would be some other-” she stops for a second and sniffs again. “Sorry. Some other family wondering if their daughter or sister was alive or dead...”

“How bad was it, if you don't mind my asking?” You say, making a note to see what you can do about at least letting her family know she was alive.

She stands up and pulls up her shirt, revealing surgical scars running from her hip up through her armpit and probably beyond.

“It was a big one, close by. SA-2, I think.” She shakes her head. “I never even saw it coming. I should be dead, but Kat had a lot of really good teachers, and she helped stabilize me.” she puts her shirt back down. “I- I was pretty far gone, really, so I don't know what happened. I guess they called in artillery on us- Kat and Jackie would have never been taken alive if they'd been able to fight back.”

You nod, knowing the feeling. “How badly were they hurt?”

She smiles. “Hardly at all. Neither of them had to be rebuilt, like me. Kat took a pretty big lump on the head- she was still wearing the bandage when I woke up after surgery, and Jackie...”

She shrugs. “They said Jackie got hit and knocked loopy, but you'd hardly be able to tell.”

“Any personal information you can give me?” you ask. “Something to tell your family, just so they know I'm not making this up?”

She smiles. “Tell them I said-”

She's interrupted by a loud voice from across the room.

“Who the hell is this? Ashley, you inviting the rooskies out for tea, now, isit?!”

She looks over at the source of the voice, then back at you. “that's Jackie.” She says.

Traditionally, Witches had their own lines of communication that held up even during times of war; this was true in WW1, and even stayed true for the beginning of WW2.

However, Stalin erased that post-Martian War, and we don't know how much of the KGB is still loyal to Stalin vs Putin. Likely Putin would have already put a program like that into action if he thought he could get away with it. If he hasn't then it's likely because he knows that there's enough of the KGB not under his control, and Stalin's still rampant paranoia, who didn't trust Witches even before the Martian cybernetics, that such a program would be found out and the security of Project Lazarus compromised.

If Putin could have done it already, it would have been done. He hasn't, and he won't, because doing so would compromise the security of Project Lazarus to the Martian-controlled Stalin and the portion of the KGB loyal to him.

[] Write In!

You nod at Ashley, before looking over your shoulder at the British witch with the slight cockney accent.

“I prefer coffee, myself.” You respond evenly. “Lieutenant commander Frank Bishop, USN. Nice to meet you miss...?”

“Jacquline Churchill, RAF. And I'm not related that fat ponce, either. The proper Churchills. Me granddad was Fightin Jack Churchill.” She says, planting her fists on her hips. “And Coffee is for wankers. Real people drink a proper afternoon cuppa.”

Ashley smiles a bit- you catch it out the corner of your eye. “But Jackie,” She says. “How can it be tea time? It's not three bong, yet.”

“Yeah, I haven't heard a bong since we got here.” Another witch adds. You catch a glance at her as she rounds a corner- noting immediately her dark red hair.

“What kinda bongless hell hole is this place?” Jacqueline practically wails. “No bongs, can't get a proper cuppa, and they keep takin me bleedin sword!”

You quirk an eyebrow at that.

Ashley looks over at you. “Sorry for not telling you sooner. She carries a claymore. Not the mine, the sword. Claims her grandfather carried it back during the war.” She shrugs. “They keep taking it away because she keeps causing problems with it.”

“Problems?” You ask.

“Last time they caught her, she and Kat had gotten drunk with one of the VDV witches and were trying to locate a tank. Don't ask me why.” She says. “She tried to hit a few of the VDV guys when they tried to get her back to her room. They had to take it away after that. We're just glad she doesn't carry a gun.”

“Guns'r for bloomin sissies!” Jackie yells. “All a real witch needs is 'er sword and a good longbow!”

1/2
>>
Jackie stomps off, muttering something about 'bloody yanks', “bongless hellholes', and several other things you can't readily make out, but you somehow doubt are complimentary. Kat, for her part, watches her go.

She joins you and Ashley a few seconds later.

“I'm-” you say, starting to introduce yourself.

“Smalltime.” She supplies, interrupting you.

“- right.” You say.

“My love is not smalltime!” Konstantina yells from nearby, clearly outraged by this slight upon your honor- as if you care.

“He is the butcher of the Bering sea! The white death of the north! He has killed dozens of the finest soviet pilots! He has defeated me three times!” She says, to a clearly bored Kathrine.

“Small. Time.” She says again.

Konstantina flushes a violent shade of red and looks about ready to do something drastic, here.

you seem to forget this is PUTIN we're talking about. he is probably gathered more power than you realize. he needs to stop the genestealer infected Stalin and he has told us that the Witches are going to be the key to do so. he NEEDS the witches on his side (or get us and our witches to back him) for his Coup d'etat. allowing the witch enclaves to talk to one another WILL help that. besides, it's JUST a suggestion to him. we can not and will not force him. pull your head out of your butt.

[x] Write in!

You look at Kat, then at Konstantina. You gotta admit, it's kind of funny how much she's absolutely fuming at the 'insult'- who even says smalltime anymore?

“Konstantina.” you say, ruffling her hair. “It's ok, thank you. I can handle myself.”

You're able to see- right about the time your hand makes contact with her scalp- the instant her brain melts down. She stumbles off in a happy daze, eliciting chuckles from the VDV paras nearby, watching. Their witch, an older one, about your age, maybe a bit older yet, just shakes her head as Konstantina flops out on a chair, her head still clearly spinning.

“Huh.” Kathrine says. “That's actually almost impressive.”

You shrug. “Hardly. She's an easy target in that regard. It's not hard to mess with people that idolize you.”

Kat grins. “Right. Kathrine Young, Luftwaffe.”

“Young?” You ask. “Not a very Germanic name.”

“Yeah, and Bishop is a very Canadian one, there, squid. Dad was USAAF.”

“Fair enough.” You respond, nodding with a laugh. “So how'd you end up here?”

She looks over at Ashley. “Jackie and I weren't about to leave our friend behind.” She shrugs. “It's a lot harder to be untouchable on the ground without strikers while trying to make sure your friend doesn't bleed to death.”

She looks at you. “So, was your psycho Russian girlfriend telling the truth? You're the butcher?”

You frown. “Hardly. I'm nowhere near as vicious as they make me out to be.”

She shrugs. “Shit like that tends to get inflated anyway. Ask Dad sometime about nicknames and how people view them. And how the hell did you end up here if you're so good, huh?”

1/2
>>
“I got invited.” You say, simply. “They think some shit's about to pop off.”

Kathrine nods. “Figures. We've been doing flights with their strikers now for months. I figured they knew something they weren't letting on if they were trying to get us up to speed on their stuff. No reason to let POWs keep their skills current.”

You nod. “Right. And now they're worried it's a lot closer than they thought.”

She shrugs. “No shocker there. So, what, they want cooperation from the allied nations, and you got picked to be their ambassador because, hey, big war hero?”

You nod again. “That's about the size of it.”

“Great.” She responds, Drily. “And you're here to ask us to make sure it's not a trap or trick or something?”

You nod.

“You're a dumbass, squid.” She says. “Ya know how much of a PR coup this would have been if it was a trap?”

“It wasn't, was it?” You say, grinning slightly.

She looks at you like you're insane. “Great. Our one hope for peace is some retard Squid. I'm excited to be a part of this plan. Ash, come get me when it's chow time.” She gets up and leaves before you can say another word.

Ashley looks at you. “Sorry for her. Um... listen. If it's not too much trouble, tell my family that Kathrine is the same as she was in September. They'll know what you mean, and it will let them know I'm alive, at least.”

You nod as she follows her friend out of the room.

Looking back over your shoulder, you notice that Konstantina still has an incredibly happy, half-dazed smile on her face. You're not so sure she can even walk. This, you reflect, is probably going to be the strangest few days of the year for you.

"Dear Journal, 1989/XX/XX

I cannot properly describe it" Frank reads, his voice quavering somewhere between fear and laughter.

"My love

love

touched-"

Katya gasps, Ice turns a shade of deep, wine red, Slider falls out of her chair laughing.

"my head in public in front of other witches and it was so brazen and so right and so good"

"PLEASE STOP~ I CANNNNN'T BREAAAAAAATHE AAAAHAHAHAHAHA~" Slider is in tears now.

"-perhaps tomorrow we will hold hands. Will he agree with me? Will he enjoy allowing eachother to show the depths of our depravity?" Frank Bishop is a professional, an officer of the United States Goddamned Navy, but there's no amount of professionalism that can keep a straight face.

Slider is gagging on the floor.

"You manslut." Katya snaps, trying and failing hard at keeping an angry expression.

"I...must think on this." Frank chokes out, "His hand...so warm..."

-Konstantina"

Ice, Katya, Slider, and Merlin stare at Frank. It takes ten minutes before the laughing subsides.

"Really, Frank?" Ice asks.

"Really."

"REALLY?" She insists.

"REALLY." Frank buries his head in his hands.

"I bet getting that from her was a trip and half." Slider says, smirking broadly. "Didja wear her out in one round, champ?"

Shouts of denial and jealousy explode from the rec room.
