Welcome back to Angel quest, the quest that took Detroit off the map!

As some of you may know, I decided to run an unplanned thread on Monday, which didn't really take off and was ended early because of some RL issues. In that thread, we advanced things a little, and brought us to the next part of the plot.

Summary of events thus far:
>A Detroit undertaker named Jonathan magically became an angel and decided to test his ability to fly straight away. Unfortunately, this resulted in a plane crash that is now considered to be the worst plane related incident since 9/11. As he moped in his apartment, Jonathan saw a strange figure with the ability to conjure and control flames assaulting the neighbourhood. Seeing this as a chance to redeem himself, Jonathan promptly crushed the man's spine in his bare hands. Afterwards, he was greeted by another angel, the first he had seen. This angel explained a few things to Jonathan and then offered to take him home, and Jonathan accepted.
>>
lets ascend to the heavens.
>>
Nodding, you ask one thing “What’s your name? You know mine”. The towering angel inclines his head, as though you had pointed out a mistake he had made or a minor offence. “I am sorry brother, I should have introduced myself. My name is Kreseum, and I am a lieutenant of the court of Soph. Now, take my hand”. He reaches out his left hand, and you take it. With a strange gesture of his right hand, you feel a strange twist in the air and see a rift open a few score metres above you. He nods, and the two of you ascend towards it. A twisting wreath of energy surrounds several marble steps , which lead off into a mist of light. You swallow at the prospect of ascending to heaven itself, but follow Kreseum.

Once the mist of multi-coloured light clears from your eyes, you take in the spectacle of Heaven itself. It looks a lot like you imagined it would. The architecture looks Greek, using a lot of marble columns and amphitheatre like open spaces. Before you is a crowd of angels, each rubbing wings with the others in an anxious fashion. Some have the same onyx skin as you, but most look very different. Some have huge scaled wings while others have glowing halos around their heads. There seem to be certain factions, but it is hard for you to tell. All the angels, or Kherapim as Kreseum called them, are wearing togas like you. Around the edge of the court yard there are angels of a slightly different calibre. They look less confused and wear armour rather than togas.

>Ask Kreseum about the Crowd and the other angels

>>Ask Kreseum about the Crowd and the other angels
lets get an idea about whats what.
>>
>>27550441
I was getting worried there for a minute.
>>
>>27550452
it seems its only the two of us as of now. well, some people should eventually come. i hope...

do we have to wear a toga? i guess so since everyone is wearing them but still we could ask, cause if we dont, then we should find someting else. they look ridiculous even with the body of a greek god.
>>
>>27550494
I'm sure it's something you could mention, though I like to think they can lend authority. Plato wore a toga.
>>
You turn to Kreseum and gesture to the milling crowd and the others that seem to be watching them. “What’s that about? Who are the guys in the armour?” You ask. Kreseum smiles and points at the toga wearing group. “They are like you. New angels, chosen by the great wheel to join the cycle of birth and re-birth as Kherapim. Like you, they selected their courts and then were sought out and brought here by members of their court. You will be the foot soldiers in the great conflict of this age.” The last sentence causes his eyes to mist over and his chest to swell in pride, but as soon as he finishes the sentence, he seems to realise he’s seen too much. He nods to you in a slightly embarrassed way and stride off, away from the crowd. Now what?, you mutter to yourself.

>Approach a member of the crowd
>Approach one of the armoured angels
>Wait where you are
>Other, Specify.
>>
>>27550534
>Approach a member of the crowd
Lets talk to some of our kind. Ask about the eyes on the wings, and if they found out any abilities and figured out how to use them. If they are willing to share information we can tell them some of what we know.
>>
>>27550571

>>
With more confidence than you really feel, you roll your shoulders and walk over to a slightly bewildered looking angel with blinking wings just like your own. Maybe he’ll know what the damn things are for. He sees you approach, and seems to examine you, even as you do the same to him. He’s a little taller than you, and has a broader wing span. You feel that your own muscles might be a little more defined and you’re sure that you’re more handsome. Not that anyone’s counting, you remind yourself. And not that anyone you can see is truly ugly. Every one of the multitude of angels looks like a sculptor had set out to make them look as angelically handsome as possible. Maybe there are degrees of beauty though, you think to yourself.

A WILD ANON APPEARS
>Approach one with nightmare black skin, like yourself

>>27550759
You reach out a hand to the other angel and he shakes it, before introducing himself. “I’m not sure if I should have a new name, now I’m so... changed, but I think my names David. David Rethen.” His accent is authentically British, and you feel like you should have some associations with it. All you can remember about Britain is one terribly old lady. The prime minister maybe? You tell him you name and job, and admit to not knowing your own surname. He shrugs. “I think it evens out. I can’t remember my job or my wife’s name, so you score there. Any idea why we’re here?” You mention what Kreseum said, which makes David’s eyes widen slightly. “Soldiers ay? Never been a military man myself, but maybe I’ll learn. This body seems pretty damn strong though. I tore the door off the house and shattered three mugs. I must’ve looked like a bit of an idiot to the person who collected me.” You decline to comment, and instead ask about the eyes on his wings, to which he grins. “Funny you should mention it, because I think I know what they’re for. They want to communicate with us. I was watching mine in the mirror for about twenty minutes before I realised, but they were blinking in Morse code. It took me a while to decode, but it was telling me to stay put and wait to be collected. Useful, ay?”

"I might have gotten the United States to invade the Middle East again."
>>

>>
>>27550945
A crack? We're completely serious. We messed up pretty badly and feel terrible.
>>
>>27550989
Sorry, it sounded like a joke. So you want to mention the potentially far reaching consequences?
>>
>>27551002
Yeah, We fuck up that badly. We REALLY FUCK UP THAT BADLY.

So we must do everything we must to stop such a situation.
>>
>>27551002
After telling you caused a plane to crash into a skyscraper it doesnt really matter if you mention those or not, he'll make those deductions regardless.
>>
>>27551002
Of course. Honesty is always the best policy.
>>
You nod uneasily, mentally debating the pros and cons of telling him about your own little mistake. He seems to think that what he did was foolish, but tearing off a door is nothing compared to crashing a plane into a skyscraper. You still aren’t a hundred percent sure that you want to fully assign the blame to yourself. After all, the pilot did seem to have some sort of heart attack and the co-pilot wasn’t doing anything. You try to not to think about how the first things you did was tear off the wing and crush the cockpit, making the plan unflyable. In the end, you decide to go for broke. Angels probably aren’t supposed to lie, you reason, and he was honest with you. He listens with a solemn facial expression and puts a hand on your shoulder when you’re finished. In your desire to come clean, you end up telling him about the burning man as well.

>Cont.
>>
>>27551102
“I know you’ve probably thought this over a hundred times, but it doesn’t sound like it was all your fault. And when you stopped that man from killing people? I think that sounds heroic! Much better than skulking in your bedroom surrounded by shattered mugs, staring at yourself in a mirror” You grin at his description, but mutter something about how bad it is. In your darkest moments, you had even wondered if your actions might spark another invasion of the Middle East. David’s jaw goes slack for a second, but recovers quickly. “I’m sure one incident wouldn’t make anything happen that wasn’t already going to”. He looks like he’s about to say more, but you are starting to feel sick of discussing your failure, and shift the topic of conversation to the strange power you used. You ask him if he discovered anything like that. Before you’ve finished your question, he’s shaking his head. “I only discovered a power for breaking family mugs, sorry. Sounds like it might be useful if we do fight though.” You start to reply, but are interrupted by a fanfare of sound from the far edge of the courtyard. An angel is hovering above the crowd and seems to be waiting for the assembled crowd to give him their full attention.

>Cont.
>>
>>27551114
The angel demanding your attention seems to slip from the group of the beautiful. His face looks as though it might have been handsome once, but someone or something has ruined it. A long scar, or perhaps scratch is a better word, runs across the marble like substance of his face. It is deep and wide enough for you to clearly make out the strange, stone like quality of his body. It cuts through one of his eyes, though he wears no patch to hide it. He seems to be one of the group that have scaled wings, as he looks like he is half a dragon. His armour is less ornate than the others and seems to be thicker as well. As the chatter of the angels settles down, he remains impassive. When it is clear that not a single being is speaking, his face twists into a sneer.

“So you are the ones chosen, are you? It seems there’s been some mistake. We need warriors, not a rag-tag collection of half-wing artisans. It’s enough to make you doubt the wisdom of the celestial bureaucracy itself” Here he spits “But I suppose I’ll just have to make do with you. My name is Joruk, and I am master of recruits for the Court of Jin. Normally, each of you would be handled separately by your courts, but things are hectic around here right now so they’ve given you all to me. I’m not going to enjoy this, you half-wing scum, but you are going to enjoy it less. I will make sure of it. Now follow me.”

Without another word, he twists and flies away across the strange landscape of clouds and buildings. After a moment’s confusion, the crowd takes to the air and follows. You gain the air easily, perhaps the only advantage of your first flying lesson, but David takes a few unsteady moments of flapping before he seems to be able to direct himself properly. As it is, you end up near the back of the group. Joruk eventually stops flying away and lands in a large arena, which is almost identical to the pictures you’ve seen of the great amphitheatre of Rome. The sand is a dark read and the place is built of the same shinging white marble of as the other buildings, but you can still see the likeness. It’s not hard to imagine fighting for your life on the sands either. Joruk would probably like that.

In the centre of the arena, there are large racks of weapons, consisting of everything from swords to battle axes, to maces to rapiers. With a disdainful gesture, Joruk motions you to all pick up a weapon. Being near the back, you arrive when there are few weapons left. Before you, there is one sword and shield pair, one double handed battle axe, one rapier, and one spear and shield pair. Finally, there is a strange metal device that looks like a chain whip with twisted spikes attached at irregular intervals.

Deciding you’d like to be as far away from your enemy as possible, you take up the spear and its accompanying shield. You see David heft the battle axe with a look of childish glee, apparently unperturbed by Joruk’s harsh words. You both move back and look towards the master of recruits. Looking as bored as before, Joruk makes a quick hand signal. A strange sign starts to glow on your shield, and you look up to see the same symbol glowing in the air in one corner of the arena. Each glowing symbol has one of the armoured angels from the courtyard standing under it. As everyone else starts to move, you realise that you are obviously being sorted into groups. Glancing at David, you see he’s been sorted into a different group. He smiles to you and walks off. As you walk towards your own group, you have strange recollections of something this reminds you of. Something about high school, though you can’t exactly remember what high school was like.

Your group is just as much of a mixture as the larger group was. The armoured angel that greets you has a glowing corona of light around his head, much like a traditional halo. His wings are huge and shine, and are, unlike your own plumage, completely free of eyes. The members of the group have mixed weapons and mixed appearances, with no one type of weapon or angel having prevalence. Before speaking, the armoured angel points to racks or armour similar to his own. The group starts to don the breast plates, but have great trouble fitting them past their wings. Your group leader helps you put on yours, and soon you feel considerably more warrior like. Along with the breast plate, you are given a tunic of grey material, greaves and a helmet. The helmet reminds you of every illustration of a Greek soldier you’ve ever seen, although without the traditional plume.

When the group have all managed to dress themselves, the leader speaks. “My name is Gordel, and I will be your mentor. Usually, a new Kherapi would be trained in our language, history and traditions before being trained in the arts of war, but these are not normal times. You are be readied for the coming years, which will be harsh indeed. Unlike normal soldiers, we do not need to condition you or harden your bodies. You are already as strong and fast as you can be, but you do not know how to wield your strength or speed. I, and the other mentors, will train you. Any questions?”

You raise you spear to indicate you have questions, and Gordel nods to you. You cough once and ask “Can you be more specific? Why will the next years be hard? And also, why are we using ancient weapons rather than guns and missiles?” Some of the group nod at your questions, as though they too wondered about these things. Gordel waits to see if you are finished and then responds. “I know little about what has happened and what will, and I am allowed to tell you even less. Be satisfied with this; As a consequence of inattention and forgetfulness on the part of the Kherapim, something very old and very evil has returned with a vengeance. The next years will be spent countering its opening moves and preparing for the true war. You are Jonathan, yes? I believe you have already encountered the first enemy. As to guns, it is a problem of logistics. The process of forging the weapons which we use is long and arduous, taking many years or decades. To forge even a single bullet would be the endeavour of several years and something as complex as a rifle? Centuries at the least. I hope that answers your questions, because it is time to start.”

>Cont.
>>
>>27552235
So that pyromaniac was powered up by the ancient enemies.
>>
Over what seems like several days, you train with your spear and shield. Gordel shows you how to thrust and block, how to turn and how to stand. You spend hours perfecting small movements, only to be told there was a flaw in your stance. After a long time, Gordel shows you how to put the motions together, into one sweeping attack that is far greater than the sum of its parts. The strange all pervading light of the place never seems to dim and you don’t feel tired or hungry, but you guess that it has been several weeks since you first came to the arena. In that time, Joruk has stalked through the groups a grand total of three times. Each time he has given out more disparaging comments than the last, to you and to everyone else. The achievements you have earned through literally days of practising are scorned by the scarred angel and you are sent back to practise some more.

It seems today is special though, as you are to be allowed to do something many have been itching for from the go; to fight each other. Gordel has explained how the weapons are forged as not to seriously wound but will withstand almost any blows, so there is no need to hold back. The armour, on the other hand, is merely designed to stop the blows from taking chips out of you. Apparently, it takes far longer to heal cracks than bruises. When the time comes to choose who will represent your group (which you were told is called Katacharn group), you are selected. Gordel speaks of your dedication to your chosen weapon and the promise that you show with it, but you feel like there might be another reason. Nevertheless, you are sent to the centre of the arena where Joruk and the representatives of the other groups stand.

Apart from your group, there are five groups. Each one seems mixed, except for the one solely over seen by Joruk. His group is dominated by angels with fiery or scaled wings, with a few others. He stands like a proud father over the representative of that group, a broad shouldered kherapim with wings as draconic as Joruk’s own and a long sword in hand. Of the other representatives, two have the coronas of light around their heads you have come to identify as members of the court of Aur, there is another scale winged angel and a member of the court of Soph, like you. It takes you a moment to recognise David, though his height and battle axe make him stand out more than a bit. You see him recognise you and he grins at you. Where once the axe sat uneasily in his hands, it now moves as fluidly as a the spear does in yours.

Joruk steps forwards and offers up a small black bag. “Inside this bag are cubes with a groups symbol on them. The symbol you get is the champion you face.” He passes it around and you see your own symbol drawn by none other than Joruk’s protégé. Great, you think, all I need to do now is to find and aeroplane to crash into him. Joruk decress that you will be the first pair to fight, and the other recruits will watch from the arenas seats. You are left in the centre, facing the other angel. Before you start, you exchange names and a few words. He is Jaques and he intends to crush you utterly. Terrific. Then Joruk signals the start.

Jaques moves forwards fast, swinging his sword over his head and down in a two handed hack. With practised ease, you deflect the blow with your shield and step smartly back. Keeping the shield between your body and him, you begin to circle. As you circle, he slashes and hacks with little held in reserve. His attacks are hard and fast, though cautious enough to not leave many openings. You sense that he might be stronger than you, but lacks the speed of reaction you possess. It eventually becomes clear that you cannot tire him out any more than he can beat you into submission. This duel will be decided by skill alone. He begins to attack for longer periods, moving into chains of attacks that force you to take step after step back, or to twist and leave yourself exposed. In turn, you jab and kick at him as he makes steps forwards. More than once, he almost falls to your lightning fast attacks. You wonder if perhaps he could be fooled into accepting a feint. You have trained little on feints but understand the principle, and it seems the best way to exploit his inferior reaction time.

You wait until he moves in for another attack, before attacking. You move into a classic coup de grace, thrusting the spear out while going down on one knee. As you expect, he spins away from the attack and turns to deliver a cross wise blow to your head. But, as he spins, you flick out you other leg, to catch his foot. If you pull this off, he will lose balance and fall to the floor, where he will be easy pickings. If he sees what you are doing, however, he will simply continue the spin and get out of arms reach. He’ll also be more on his guard. Now it all weighs on whether he’s fast enough on the uptake to spot it... and he’s not. Your foot hooks under his and pulls it away. As he’s in midstep, he’s left without a leg to stand on, literally. He topples into the dust and lands heavily on his own wings. A second later, the point of your spear slams into his chest and forces him down further. The armour absorbs some of the blow, but it’s clear he felt it from his pained grimace. From where the emperor might traditionally sit, Joruk lets out a roar of dismissal, signalling the end of the duel. Although you are the clear victor, the scarred angel makes no motion to make this evident. Instead, he waves you away and calls for the next pair; David and of the Aur coutiers. You feel a little robbed, but more than satisfied with the job you did. Let’s see anyone do that with a battle axe.
