You are the Protagonist. You are unemployed. And right now your knuckles hurt; you look down at them and realise the right one is pretty badly skinned.

It is a good pain though. You'd come with Jo, your flatmate, to sell bratwursts, and a bunch of toughs came thinking to extort you, only to get flattened. You especially liked the look on that guy's face - Tomas, was it? - when you got him right in the throat. It wasn't even a hard punch. You could probably have killed him if you were putting any weight into it.

Now, though, you're facing horrors where your fists will not avail you; where no amount of fighter's bravery will save you. It's the horror of looking management consultants in the eye.

'So,' Merton, in his dark blue suit and that smirk, 'where's your assistant?'

> cont'd.

Meanwhile, Erica has gone on to give her friend Alexis a hug. Alexis turns out to be a fair-skinned girl in a short flowery dress, hair cut in a short bob, fingernails painted a bright neon blue. That's a nice colour actually.

'Alexis! How's it going?'

'So-so. Gig went well? Who's the new beau?' She gestures at you and then frowns a little. 'Wait a minute, aren't you the guy who took out Tomas out just now at the food hall? I was just having dinner there. You've got a brass pair, mate...'

Erica looks even more confused. 'Uh, he's not a beau...'

'You fight?' Merton says. 'My, my, I never thought I'd be meeting so many people from, you know, the other side of life. You do that for a job or something?'

There is, no, middle finger, big enough.

> What do/say? You can always ignore Merton (or someone else) if you want.

'I'll tug on your undercarriage if I know where he is,' you shrug. 'I just hire him, he's not my boyfriend or anything, right? We ran out of bratwursts, so he's cleaned up and probably gone home.'

'Woah, woah,' Merton laughs, and you belatedly realise not all of his group is with him - just Tallie, that woman you spotted just now as well, and another dude. This second dude is lightly bearded, but you notice how he fills out his shirt and suit. 'Well I was just wondering if Phelan here can take you on, you see. You reckon, Phel?'

'Sorry,' Alexis pipes up in a measured voice, pointing to a couple who are standing behind the group, 'if you'd like to talk, could you please make way for the customers? I think-'

'Hey,' Merton cuts her off, 'I don't give you what for over your hideous-looking jewellery, don't give me what for over standing here, all right? Phel, what do you think?'

'I'd say 300 dollars,' Phel says, grinning. 'You think, mate?'

> What do/say? Alexis' jewellery isn't that hideous - it's just rather simple.
>>
>>27565405

'Step out of the girl's way, before I slap you out of it for free.'
>>
>>27565499

Alexis gets to her feet, while still maintaining her composure as much as she can. Erica moves to stand beside her; she's a head taller than her friend, but between the two you somehow think Alexis is the one who's more in control.

'Look, people...' she starts talking, when Phel turns and gives her a menacing glare, as if asking what she might want to do. That does it. You take a step in and Phelan turns back to you. You can smell the alcohol on his breath. Well, that would account for the aggression.

'I'll floor you for free, if you keep standing in the girl's way,' you say.

'Will you now? Come on then, because the fuck I'm walking.'

'Phel boy,' Tallie says, attempting to be soothing, 'come on, let's go. This dude isn't worth it.'

Erica, meanwhile, is looking at you and shaking her head. What to do? You're sober, while Phel's drunk; it seems a little foolish to oblige a drunken idiot's wish to get punched out. But then this is the sort of thing you just don't like, rich people being fucking dicks.

A mischievous thought presents itself in your mind, and though you're pretty sure you haven't got the cash to back it up, the words spill out anyway.

'Tell you what,' you give the grin of a dog spotting a cowpat, 'I'll double that money. Then we go somewhere else. How's that?'

Phelan pauses, then finally moves aside from in front of Alexis' stand. But you notice something else - Erica is watching with some interest. When the man shrugs off his suit and gestures outside, you follow, and realise Erica's following too.

'We'll take it to the carpark, eh?' You say, and the three suits agree. Tallie's changed her tone completely from peace counsellor into wartime advisor. 'You'll give it to him, yeah? Give it to him, Phellie boy!'

'Don't call me Phellie, it sounds like I'm a dick.'

'Should I tell you to give it to him properly?' Erica says.

> Do/say anything to Erica?
> If not, it's on to the carpark.
> Or do something else.
>>
>>27565867
Only if you want me to
>>
>>27565952

'Well, if you want me to.' You grin at her, skirting the crowds and keeping a good distance from the rows of portaloos. You can hear retching coming from inside, as well as outside, the plastic boxes.

'I don't really like fighting, but for six hundred bucks, sure. Give it to him properly.'

Come think of it, you actually do not know where Jo is... but fuck it, she'll take care of herself. You wouldn't be fucking surprised if that Wystan dude, with the nerveshock, is around keeping a watch on the two of you as well. It's not like stalkers can't be impeccably dapper...

'Right,' Merton says when you walk out into the parking lot far enough to be away from most people, but before you can say much Phelan rushes past him, coming straight for you. You have just enough time to push Erica aside, hearing her squeak, before his fist connects with your left cheek, sending a shockwave of pain throughout you as your ears scream, your head twists and you fumble towards the ground.

You don't hit it, of course. Eventually your feet return to duty and you straighten up, feeling the pain fade into numbness. What a cunt.

Standing up, you resist the temptation to rub your screaming face. Erica, who's also regained her balance, seems a little stunned, but she too resists the temptation to move. Well, well, so it turns out honour is out of the way then.

'How'd you like that, you little dick?' Phelan says, shedding his shirt to reveal chiseled pecs, sculpted shoulders - the sort of muscles you get pumping dead things in an air-conditioned room, preferably while a personal trainer fellates you.

'i've taken naps harder than that,' you lie. It's a good way to make him come (in a fighting way, that is), and he does indeed, striding over. He feints to your right, which you don't fall for; then his right hand swings in from outside, and you move both your hands to-

KRK! Just as your hands push his right hand off, his left fist, having withdrawn a little, rockets directly into your nose. The night suddenly bursts into fireworks, you lose a sense for the ground, and when you recover your chin and lips are both wet and warm with blood. You've reeled a good few steps, but Phelan is so arrogant he doesn't bother to take you down for certain. Or maybe so arrogant he thinks he *has* taken you down for certain.

This guy clearly never been in a pub brawl before.

>>
>>27566328

'What, you're still not going down? You even got me fist dirty,' he taunts you, showing you the blood on his knuckles.

You don't bother replying but simply advance, trying your best to ignore the ringing in your head and the fact that one of your eyes is fading in and out. Phelan clearly hasn't expected this; he throws a jab which you dodge, another which you deflect, and then tries to swing high and clip you in the head again. He sure knows the principle of hitting what hurts, the bastard!

This time, though, you are prepared. As he leans forward for his high swing, you jab him hard in the ribs, distracting him so you can catch his right arm instead of just blocking it. Then you raise your foot and stamp horizontally against his shin, like on a cockroach, but HARDER.

'AW FUCK!' His leg wobbles, and his left hand slaps your cheek, but it's a relatively minor blow compared to what he's already done. You stomp on his shin again and this time he goes down on one knee, right arm still extended and in your grip, and his head right in front of you.

Your first blow... hits!

Your second blow... yeah, it hits!

Your third blow... yeah, actually, his head can't really move, so guess what! Finally it occurs to him to block you with his left arm, and at the same time Merton and Tallie are screaming at you to stop before they call someone.

> What do? You could probably dislocate his elbow with a little twist now, given you've gripped it correctly. He's stretched out and bleeding from the ear, and sounds a little incoherent.

You chuckle when Tallie mentions calling someone, and slap Phelan's left hand away. 'Go ahead, call someone. I'll break Phellie boy's arm now. Then I'll spend a night in Hotel Fuzz, and your man still has a broken arm. Go on.'

'Okay, okay! Fucking hell! I'm not calling anyone!' She keeps the phone.

'Good. You got eight hundred dollars with you?'

'Eight hundred? We said six hundred, you little rat!' Merton steps up, but then remembers what he's doing and steps back down.

'I don't mind being two hundred bucks down,' you say, 'but your friend will have a broken arm.' To prove your point you brace your knee against Phelan's chin and give a little tug on his shoulder, which makes him whimper. 'Eight hundred, please!'

'Okay!' Money is dumped into Erica's confused hands, whereupon you let Phelan go and he drops on the tarmac. Normally you'd help people up, you suppose. But not today. Erica, looking a little shaken, takes a handkerchief out of her pocket.

> Okay, a little note on reputation. I haven't mentioned this so far because I only just came up with it, and besides you haven't started really slugging people until tonight.

> Your reputation is how people in South Cloverdene, your main neighbourhood, know about you, if at all. You've built up a pretty good base of it in this area tonight, from taking out Tomas and his toughs.

> So currently, you have a reputation for being a fighter, and also for being a bit mercenary (squeezing money out of the bet with Phelan). None of this is necessarily good or bad, unless you have a reputation as a snitch or unreliable; but this name may precede you and have effects on subsequent hustling.

You accept the handkerchief, as well as the money. Your nose hurts, but it probably isn't broken; the second punch was a lot less powerful than you thought at first glance. Still, the white cloth comes off streaked with red. Erica leads you by the shoulder and arm back, as you text Jo.

'Hey I got into a scrap for money where r u?'

'So that's the sort of thing you get gloves for?' Erica said. 'Why didn't you wear them?'

'Forgod de breg de fuggig thigz. I'm a man ob peace, seriously!'

She laughs at that, and slaps your back. Well, at least it's the back. 'You need some rest.'

'I'b gonna see Alegsid.'

'You're not thinking of nailing her too, are you?' She gives you a sly look. That could be disapproving, except you know she doesn't disapprove of casual sex. It could also be jealous, but then she doesn't sound like that sort.

'Well...' you think about it, as much as your slightly battered brain can think. Well, certainly there's one part that's completely unaffected. 'That wasn't the first thing that came to mind, but... sure. Where's Alexis live?'

'She lives with me actually.' Erica knows exactly what you're thinking, but she says nothing until you go to Alexis, just as she's wrapping something up for a customer.

'Thanks! Have a nice evening! What the hell happened to you, man?' She gets up and lets you have her chair, and you lean forward so any excess blood drips on the floor instead. Pity the cleaners.

'Well, if it got that creep away from your stall, it's worthwhile innit.'

'Don't listen to him, he got the money from that guy.' Erica folds her arms as you glare at her. 'But that guy *is* a creep.'

'Money for fighting sounds like a reason to buy some of my stuff, maybe?' Alexis places a hand on your shoulder and gestures to her wares. Your eyes fall on a little dragonfly bent out of silver wire, with intricate patterns all around its wings. 'I made all of this myself.'

'Everything?'

'Course everything.'

'You must be really good with your hands to make all this. I mean, look at that...' you pick up the dragonfly, holding it body facing upwards. Alexis sighs.

'I know where you're going with that, man.' Erica giggles. 'That's $60, by the way.'

'A fair and noble price to pay, to someone who catches on that quickly.' You hand the money over with exaggerated ceremony. 'For indeed I think she knows what I have in mind already, even now, as I text my flatmate to say I'm not going home.'

'Mmm.' She squeezes your shoulder, with surprising strength. 'I guessed you had a beau, Erica. I'm staying until later, though, so how about the two of you go home first, and I'll join you later.'

Wait, was that... an agreement? Because she says it in such a deadpan way you can't help chuckling yourself at the thought that it was. What on earth would Alexis say while in the act? 'Yes. Yes. Yes indeed, yes,' probably.

'Well, shall we go then?' Erica taps your other shoulder, and still slightly mystified at Alexis, you follow her out of Ellsburn to the bus stop. Only then do you text Jo to say you're not going home. She simply replies 'stay safe mate'.

'Mmm, I can't believe I got stuck with the morning shift tomorrow,' Erica says on the bus, hooking her arm around yours and yawning.

'Yeah, but the money, man, I need the money.'

'Does Giggenham's even pay that well?'

'Not really, but...' she shudders as you run your hand along her sides. 'Anyway, what'd I do if I call in sick?'

'I don't know, rolling in the hay sounds like a good idea. You reckon Alexis will join us?'

'I think she has a gig tomorrow actually. A musical one...' then she tenses as your fingers brush against her rather prominent hip bone. 'We're almost there.'

You decide to hold your peace until you get into the apartment - pretty much a small L-shaped walkway with two tiny rooms and a kitchen overlooking the street. Toilet's over there. 'Nah, I'll have a poor man's mimosa.'

She leads you into her room, where she's somehow managed to squeeze a closet, a single bed *and* a desk, *and* a two-seat couch, and you make yourself comfy on the couch. A Pulp Fiction poster is on the far wall, and over the bed is another movie poster.

>If you're too silly, I shall have to ask the Colonel in. Silly, silly, silly.
I know, we started off with a nice thread about a young man punching things, and now it's gotten silly!

The nod to Kung Fu Hustle yesterday made me smile too.
>>
>>27567837
Well I don't always earn my income from punching people, sometimes that's just sort of like a bonus every now and then

Most the time I do odd jobs or get drunk. Just like in college really

How about you? Any interesting diversions for money that I haven't heard about already?

>You don't. Come think of it, you had unprotected sex with Erica just earlier today. Well done, you.

One would hope that the sort of girl who has unprotected sex with a guy she just met in a changing room is the sort of girl who's on the pill.

As for what she's asking...

"Whatever comes my way, it's not as reliable as a stable job, and it's been more painful recently, but it ain't boring."

With one hand occupied by holding the drink, you do what you can - stroking Erica's thighs through the black jeans. She wears a bit too much black, actually. 'It's not where *all* my money comes from. I'm actually a nerd, you know.'

'Right you are,' she says.

'No, seriously. Chemistry degree, with a minor in mechanical engineering. You just can't tell because I haven't got me horn-rimmed glasses on, and me ballpoint pen.'

For some reason that makes her burst out laughing, leaning all the way back, and you slip your hand under her top, feeling her trim belly. Not much muscle, but then neither are you exactly ripped. She sits up, but holds your hand where it's gone. 'That's hilarious! Dude, why don't you be a tutor or something then? I mean, it involves a lot less punching than... punching.'

Actually, that's an idea... 'well, how about you? Any hustles I don't know about?'

'Hmmm. Well, I work at the shop, then I work at a bookstore, then I do the stage gig thing. Sometimes I sell any free tickets I can get my hands on.' She jerks again as you reach for her hip. 'Well, now you know the on/off switch, don't you? Also, I'm an aspiring actress.'

That would explain the posters. Suddenly Erica gets off you and begins undoing her jeans. 'I need a shower, I feel gross.'

> What do/say? Also, possible idea - teaching CHEMISTRY to SCHOOL KIDS. Of whom there are quite a lot around Cloverdene.

You get up too and help get her jeans off. Even her briefs are black! 'Maybe I could help you clean up?'

'You help me? You need help yourself,' she laughs, and leads you into the bathroom. It's almost too cramped for two people, really; you get into the tub and realise you can't actually stretch out in it. Neither can the two of you really move around without rubbing up against each other.

Wait, sorry, you just remembered - you have no problem with that whatsoever. The ventilation fan is bloody noisy though, almost drowning out your moans as you make out properly this time, without having a manager on the prowl outside-

'Erica I'm ho- oh sorry!'

By then you're curled up in the tub with Erica on you, water splashing and dripping off her into your face, scrubbing her back and also her front while you're at it. A thorough cleaner, you are. She looks up. 'That's pretty early for her,' she mutters as you kiss elsewhere to allow her to talk. 'Normally she stays out drinking with her stall neighbours... ooh. They're pretty close. Do you just want to... right here?'

> Huh. What do/say?

You continue cleaning each other with soap and a very... interestingly shaped loofah, Erica bending to let you scrub her back, feeling the little nodes of her backbone against the skin. And then a thought comes to you.

'Are you sure that's Alexis? Could be a robber...'

'Whaaat?' She kisses you back. 'No, defo Alexis.' She gets to her feet and turns off the shower, and then you can hear guitar music - a simple, hauntingly sad tune. 'See? That's her practicing her guitar. Also, look at you.'

You look down at your implement. 'What, were you expecting it to grow tentacles or something? That's how it ought to be!'

She laughs, and continues laughing - when you're not kissing her, that is. Guiding her to the bed, you push her onto the narrow mattress. Should you... should you disturb Alexis? She's still playing.

> What do? You've got boxers on, for a minimum of decorum.

'Man, it's like a private concert here,' you whisper, caressing Erica slowly, lingering around her hips and ribs as she gasps, pressing up to you. It's a little too effective, really - you were going to listen to one song and then go ask Alexis if she'd like to join, but the song isn't even over before Erica's clambered onto you and gotten started.

This is a lot more comfortable for her than the wall of the changing room, that's for sure.

Maybe it's the music, or maybe it's the fatigue and general chillness after a long shower, but both of you take your time. Actually, maybe it's the fact that your face and chest and ribs are aching a lot more than they were just earlier as well. Still, you're both loud enough that halfway through you hear Alexis' room door slam, and pause.

'We pissed her off,' she whispers.

'We'll sort that out,' you say, and resume scheduled transmissions.

> 85: Nicely timed wake up.

You jerk awake from a lovely, dreamless sleep to find that overnight you have been promoted from Sexual Partner to Substitute Mattress. Erica's body is slumped on yours, shoulders moving slightly as she breathes (good, she's alive, this is not a nightmare), each breath tickling your neck. Her arms are wrapped around your neck, which feels like you're being hugged by dragons, and she's muttering something every now and then.

This girl seems to like her post-coitus with a lot of attachment... no one say a word, I swear! But then, glancing the other way, you notice sunlight coming in through the windows. A quick check of your watch, just within reach, says it's 8. When is Erica's morning shift?

You also hear loud humming from outside, as Alexis no doubt gets ready for her own day. Hmm. What's she like in the morning, you wonder?

Also, isn't Jo moving smartphones or something today? Man, for someone who is determined not to have a long term goal in life, you really think too hard about your goals for the day...

> What do? Shaking Erica off you might wake her up. But then...

'Hnnngrrh?' Erica makes a slightly dejected whine as you prise her off yourself, as gently as you can. 'Hrnrhhmnmmmm.'

'Erica. You've got work in the morning. It's like...' you turn the clock around and blink. 'It's ten?!'

'Ten?' Then she sits up in all her wild-haired, slightly tattooed, naked glory. 'Oh, fuck! I started at nine!'

Even as she scrambles up to get her clothes, though, you know she's in deep shit - she probably would get fired for this, in the City. This is the reason why you don't want to have a job in the first place. Quickly you put on your own clothes and scurry out of the bedroom to see Alexis, in a shirt and shorts, just about to chomp down on a sandwich. Her eyes widen.

'Oh shit, oh shit, oh fuck...' Erica continues inside.

'She's got a morning shift, hasn't she? I thought you were gone. Was it that good that you slept all day?' She shakes her head.

> Shit, damn! What do/say?

She'll probably get fired unless we do something, her boss is a pain in the arse and we kinda stung her yesterday with the whole swagging the commission thing.

As lolsorandom as it might seem I think we should entertain the notion of Hooking her in the eye, so as to provide her with a cover story for her lateness, the city *is* rough and she does live in a rough part of it.

Obviously, we'd have to ok such a plan first, outright lamping her might cause duress.

'Look, Alexis, I'm really sorry about last evening we were a bit loud and got in the way,' you begin.

'Apology accepted, I suppose I might have to get used to that.'

'Also, I'll really have to get Erica off to the mall now, or she'll be fired for sure.' Just then, Erica stumbles out, her eyes already red, wearing a Giggenham's apron. Alexis raises an eyebrow.

'Fired? Why? It's 8:03.'

'It's... it's what?' You follow Alexis' finger, gesturing to the analogue wall clock - the hour hand at VIII, the minute hand strolling to I. Going into the bedroom, you realise what's happened; you went to check the digital clock instead of the watch. And now the clock is reading E0:80.

'Arrrgh!' Erica comes in and gives you a proper kick on the rump while you're bent over. 'You bloody idiot!'

> I... phew!

'Thanks. But it's soothe the savage *breast*, actually.' You know, you never had much difficulty soothing the savage breast either, but you're not sure that would work on Alexis. Meanwhile, Erica comes back out, dressed more casually - a loose yellow top that almost hides her own shorts, going straight to the long, slightly thin legs.

'Fair enough. Would you like breakfast at the pub, though? I need to soothe the savage stomach. And my rather savaged face and hands.'

'Fair enough. We could sit down and have a chat. You know, maybe you should take the day off sick, Erica.' Then, just when you think she's about to suggest a big roll-out in the hay, 'you've got an audition this evening, remember?'

The pub turns out to be a chain-run affair which is rather neatly divided into two parts - the upper bar on the inside, which is thronged with breakfast-eating old fogeys, and the lower bar and outside garden, which is rather emptier, but more your demographic. College kids with bottles of beer and sandwiches, mostly.

You order three orange juices, because you are a good person, and bring the menus back to the table. 'This pub's pretty nice.'

'Yeah, no shit. It's a bit of a local gang watering hole.' Alex glances around. 'Don't see any of them around though. You're not from a gang, are you? You don't look it, but then the way you fight...'

Then to Alexis, 'nope, none of that. I was the nerdy college kid who tells everyone 'please, don't argue, and don't fight, because I don't want to have to punch all of you out'.'

'Huh. So why aren't you a bouncer, then?'

'Don't like staying up late. I'm a nerd.'

'You play games?'

'Oh god, Alex...' Erica points to her. 'She's addicted. Can't stop. It's a wonder she's up so early this morning, actually.'

Meanwhile your foot is reaching out slowly, aiming for Erica, but then you touch someone who might not be her. WAIT, IS THAT SOMEONE UNDER THE TABLE? No, it's Alexis, and her bare leg does not move even after you shrink back and advance a little more. 'Yeah, but then if I'm going to be occupied, I think getting paid is nice.'

'Can't argue with that. But, you see, it's like a long term investment. The more people you know, through volunteering, sometimes the more opportunities come along. I get plenty of gigs from going to the Promontory to help people tend their lovely private schools. It's a day of working with idiots who can't use secateurs, but hey, if they want to give work...'

'Oh, I play HEAVE Online, and some other RPGs as well. Mostly the ones where you can get items and trade them though... I sold a Shimmering Mace of Aronkunic Power for 250 bucks the other day!'

'People pay 250 bucks for that?' Erica says. 'I need to get playing.'

'You need to get your own machine, and stop doing the damned part-time jobs,' Alexis says. 'Except maybe the music one, that's nice.'

You then text Jo, who does not reply because she's probably sleeping. 'Is that your stead?' Alexis asks, gesturing at your phone. 'Jo? Joanna, I'm guessing, rather than Joseph?'

'Well, somewhat.' She isn't just somewhat, though. You could mention her less appealing qualities, like the quality of her bowel movements, but then you're about to order breakfast.

You get three large breakfasts, as well as a good glimpse of the cute hippy's ample bosom as she sets the plates on the table. But as your eyes follow her back to the bar, they are interrupted by the sight of a few men entering the pub, with a slight air of menace about them. Both the girls look up from eating their sausage.

'Oh, here they are, the firm.'

There are four of them, not in tracksuits but jeans and shirt - the sign of relatively senior people out here. As two of them head for the bar, one spots your table and comes over. 'May I, Erica, Alexis?'

'Yeah, go on then.'

He sits down, and you look on as both of them take out 50 bucks and slip them to him. 'Had a good week? Rarely see your lovely face round here, Erica.'

'Nah, it was just a punch up. Bit of scrapping.'

'Never did anyone harm, eh?' He smiles and then, to your surprise, gives you a business card. 'Well, if you're the sort who thinks it doesn't do any harm, why not join a pool fight? Just to see how it'll go, eh?'

A pool fight isn't a fight in a pool; it's the term for fights where part of the admission fees, or possibly the betting take, are put in a pot, and the winner's prize is the amount of money in that 'pool'. It's a pretty quick and violent way to make money... but then you've made money quickly and violently already. 'I'll consider. Cheers.'

Once he's out of earshot, you turn around. 'The hell was that for?'

'Protection,' Erica sighs. 'It's a weekly thing.'

'That's 200 bucks a month!'

'Our flat is worth a bit more than that though, so.' Alexis shrugs. 'Well, we're still above water somewhat...'

You suddenly realise how fortunate you are. Then again, the City is where youth underemployment and unemployment is at hideous levels...

After breakfast, Alexis goes home while you take Erica down to the doctor's.

'What should I fake, then?'

'You can do a convincing cough, right? Then tell them it's a bad throat and all that?'

As it turns out, you're one of the later ones to go to a clinic and make your case, so you sit there under the watchful eye of the nurse as Erica begins to cough violently. Soon you're taken into the office itself. (Wait, why are you following her? She's not 5 or something...)

'Hmm. Well, Erica, I'm not sure there's much wrong with you...' the doctor says, after a cursory check with a stethoscope and a tongue depressor. 'Maybe a little reddened in the throat, but...'

Fuck, looks like you'll have to help her get the certificate somehow then!

'But, doctor, her throat was hurting quite badly just earlier...'

'Is that so? Well...' the doctor turns to you. 'do you have any... particular evidence to say she does?'

Erica looks down, then glances at you in something almost like guilt. You haven't been to a doctor in some time, but given that this guy works in a clinic instead of the gleaming hospitals elsewhere, you suspect that the evidence isn't going to be phlegm. You take out $50 and put it on the table.

'Well.' The doctor takes the money. 'I don't think you have anything, but it might be worth it to be on the safe side, and so I'll just give you the slip...'

That, as well as the usual consultation fee, brings it to $80. Fucking hell! You can definitely see why Erica doesn't want to even try being sick. Hell, you wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't come to the doctor even when she *is* sick. As you get out of the clinic, she looks at you.

'I'm really sorry. I should've just gone to work...'

'I suppose... so where'll you go now?'

'I'm hanging out with you. You're off work, right? I can hang out, right?'

Erica gives another little smile, points you in the right direction and you begin walking back towards her place. Halfway there, she stops you and goes off to the snack store to get some strange, honeycomb-like things. 'This is flute candy,' she says, and you crack off one piece. 'How's it?'

Holy shit. The thing is like honey, peanuts, cinnamon and angel saliva. 'It's delicious!'

'Good! We've got more snacks back home. Sometimes we just grab freebies wherever we can, you know?'

As you head upstairs and for her place, though, you can hear a strange voice from inside. Wait, that's not a strange voice, that's Alexis! And she's fucking *angry*! You've never heard that before, and both of you stand outside the flimsy door, slightly stunned. Most of what she says can be heard.

'Fuck you, mate, I'm not playing for free! It's not a single song, I'm there for two hours! What do you mean I should take this if I want to take other venues? Are you fucking trying to block me off?'

Erica opens the door and you sneak in, to see Alexis in the kitchen. 'Hello? Wait, what the *fuck*? Hello!' She stares at the phone. 'Fuck!'

'What happened?' Both of you ask as Alex slumps in the kitchen chair.

'It's the little fucker who booked today's gig. He said there's been a fuck up on the side of the bar, so he hasn't got the money for me today. But that little bastard already owes me hundreds of dollars, and I know he won't cough up.'

'Christ,' you mutter, and get a beer for Alex, who chugs a good third of it before putting it down, gasping.

'And now, he's telling me that if I don't play tonight for nothing, he'll 'reconsider' my gigs for the next two weeks, with other bars as well. Thing is, he's well connected with them, which is why I worked with him in the first place. But if he cancels on me, then I got nothing music-wise for this whole *month*. In *summer*! And he'll pull strings and tell others not to hire me as well...'

That's kinda spoiled the mood... or has it? Maybe she might be more openly amenable if she's feeling stressed. Alexis rubs her forehead, then reaches for the beer. 'Goddamnit.'

> Huh. Okay, how do you want to take it from here?

You sigh. Well, what can you do about that? If the guy has good connections to the bars, he must have good connections to those others connected to bars. You could break the guy's jaw and point him to Alexis; and all that would get for Alexis is a fucking bathtub full of hot soup and deep shit.

'Maybe you just need to leave the agent and do your own searching,' Erica suggests.

'Yeah, but that halves the price sometimes.'

'Still,' you offer tentatively, 'would be better than having no price at all.' Standing behind Alexis, you begin gently rubbing her shoulders, and while she flinches at first, she doesn't resist. 'Now, show or no show, what you got to do is to relax. Then you can think it over calmly.'

'Mmm, I suppose...' you slowly loosen the knots of muscles in her supple shoulders, then begun moving up her neck. She lowers her head so you can access her warm nape, humming softly as you push and press. Erica looks at you.

'I didn't know you're good at this too,' she said. 'You never did that to me!'

'You weren't stressed out,' you say, thumbs inching slightly, slightly down Alexis' back towards her shoulderblades.

'I was too...'

'Well, I can't do the two of you at the same time though,' you wink at Erica, who narrows her eyes a little. 'But Alexis, is there anything I can do to help? To the bar, perhaps?'

'Nah, it's not the bar's problem.' She's shifting a little, allowing you access to more of her back (she's changed into a sleeveless top, and it's really getting rather warm now). 'The bar's reliable.'

'Then why rely on the agent? You could do it yourself. How many bars is he talking about, that he's linked to?'

'Oh, like the 5 or 6 in my usual routine...'

'That's not a lot. There's eight and a half million fuckers in the City! Thousands of bars!' You smile and reach farther, almost to the hemline of her top. 'I say fuck'em, negotiate yourself, and if I see any place I know, I'll tell them about you.' Off the top of your head you know there's an Irish pub down near where you live, and Kenny, who runs the place, might well appreciate some live music.

Your thoughts are interrupted, however, by Erica putting a hand on your shoulder. She's got a piece of the candy in her mouth, and it's pretty clear what she wants you to do. You try to continue massaging Alexis properly while sharing the candy with her flatmate, and then Alexis moves your hands away and stands up.

'Hey, hey, divide your attentions please,' she says.

> What do? That sounds like a yes.
> Also, mental note: Go talk to Kenny in the Irish pub. You've had quite a bit of colcannon and Guinness at his place, so he's friendly to you.

You pick the candy out of Erica's lips and turn to Alexis, who leans upwards to share it as well. Erica kisses you, then Alexis, then you again, and then begins shrugging out of her clothes. Soon the candy dissolves, and you're just going from one mouth to another.

'There's plenty, mmm, in the bag,' Erica pants. 'Also, Alex has the double bed...'

Oh so there *is* a double bed! Along the way there you grab the bag of candy, while all three of you continue shedding. By the time you're in Alexis' room you're in just your boxers, and this room amazes you even more. It's larger than Erica's, sure, but it's got a proper desktop computer and a couch as well, and even a WILLY bookshelf from OKEBÅ.

Oi, stop giving furniture commentary! Erica give you a shove, and you drag Alexis with you onto the bed. Out of the dress, she's a bit more endowed than you'd guessed.

'What're you doing with the bag of candy?' She says in between kisses, and then undoes her bra and lies back. Erica's crawled on top of you and lay down gently. This seems to be a favoured position of hers, the I've Got a Living Mattress position...

You prop yourself up, and while Erica shifts to straddle you - god, this is the third time with a woman you just met less than a day ago - grab the bag of candy and place a few pieces on Alexis, strategically. She looks down at herself.

'Hey, this means I can't move!'

'We'll have to free you then,' you say, and place a large piece of candy in her mouth. Alexis tries her best to hold still as you and Erica descend on her, but as you lick around her chest and move the rough candy across her, she begins to shudder. Then Erica heads for the candy you've placed farther below, and Alexis jerks.

'Have you... done this before, you two?'

Both of them shake their head. Well, always a first time! You fondle Erica's body, stroking the dragon along her flanks, while nibbling your way across Alexis like a sugar-crazed... nibbling... animal kind of thing. Finally she props herself up and kisses you properly, and Erica moves to join in.

You focus hard on unsexy things, difficult as that is while lying in a woman's lap and being rode on. Then, working on muscle memory and your immense ability of deduction, your hand reaches out for Alexis' underarms. She sees what you're doing, but it's too late; her arm clamps down, but it just traps your hand right where you wanted it to be.

You twiddle your fingers, tickling the tender skin, and Alexis shudders and begins to giggle and yelp at the same time. Her hands clamp down on your arms, which kind of helps you not come since YOUR ARMS HURT, and after a few seconds she shivers again and removes herself, before looking at you.

'I still got it,' you grin. 'Don't touch it! I still got it! I won!'

You fall back onto the bed and turn to stroke Alexis' thighs, while Erica gets up to wipe herself clean. The fine hair on her legs sound like they'd be offputting, but it's a lovely feeling. 'Well, so you finished in her after all,' Alexis says, voice even as usual, but with a smile on her face.

> Fogwood it is, then!

Erica purrs as you rub her shoulders, kneading it, noticing the red marks where you had been kneading just a few minutes ago. Leaning over to Alexis, you whisper, 'well, it could be. You reckon?'

'I reckon we'll see how things flow,' she turns to give you a peck. Heh, 99% of the time she's straight and level, but the other 1%... meanwhile Erica's leaned back against you, and your back rub is turning into a front rub which she encourages.

'Oh, holy shit,' Alexis says, leaning forward. 'It's an eaglion!' True enough, a half-lion, half eagle beast is swooping over the woods. 'Damn! Should I chase it?'

'Have you got the levels?'

'Well... barely. But I feel lucky, maybe.' She glances at you. 'What, do you think I ought to feel lucky? What do you think? Be quick, it's fucking off quickly.'

The stakes are high - her character's wearing a lot of armour which could be lost, if not irretrievably, if she gets killed. You frown, hands paused over Erica's bosom.

> Give chase! No guts, no glory!
> Nah, dude, let's not.
> How about I play it?

> Dat roll!

Well, what's the point of *not* chasing, anyway? You can only gain! Unless of course your armour drops right by the Eaglion's nest, in which case you have to try and get it back while naked and you're kinda fucked-

'Oh, go for it!' You say. 'I mean, why not? We may never see it again this day! So let's go kill it and loot its body!'

'Okay! You said it, man!'

The three of you watch as Alexis' horse-riding character canters between the trees, eyes always on the prize. Eventually, as the eaglion swoops and attempts to kill her, she fights back, sinking several arrows and a throwing spear into the beast to slow it down.

'Awesome! It's headed for that spire!' Erica points. 'That one!'

'I think so too!'

For now you just watch, but soon your hand begins wandering near the entrance to Erica's underwear. She looks away from the screen, and then at you, but does not resist as you make your way there again. She gasps just as Alexis does too.

'It's over there! Ohhhh yes!'

> cont'd.
>>
>>27573293
Stop with the fondling, you'll distract Alexis.
>>
>>27573293

You continue watching as Alexis runs up the foothills, tethers the horse and begins the climb up the spire, checking her equipment carefully. She gets halfway up the hill before the Eaglion spots her and damn near sweeps her off a perch; on its second try, Alexis hurls a harpoon which finds its mark in the beast's hindquarters.

Erica, meanwhile, is getting a little misty eyed, her hand holding yours.

'Oh yes,' Alexis mutters. 'Ohhh yes. Almost there - almost - THERE! Come at me, you little winged bastard!'

'Go Alexis!' Erica manages to utter. Then, nuzzling you, 'go you too.'

> Okay. That 96 above - should it be for the combat, or for the loot?

You slow down on Erica, hoping not to make too much of a distraction. But her hand is moving yours so you can't really stop, and the battle against the Eaglion is turning out to be far more time-consuming than any of you imagined. It's fast, and while its swipe attack is easily dodged, this also means Alexis is trying her hardest just to score a proper hit.

Then, finally, it happens. Having used 6 harpoons and lost them all, Alexis takes out her Lightning Silver, a practically guided projectile. 'Why didn't you just use that one first!?' you said.

'Because I didn't want to risk it breaking!'

> cont'd.
>>
>>27573578

The Lightning Silver guides itself and sinks into the Eaglion's flank, and with a bloodcurdling screech it dives into a rock, suffering more damage. But even when grounded it's still a half-lion, half-eagle monster, and as Alexis wears it down with sword and spear, you feel Erica is also being worn down.

'Oh... okay... I...' Her hand tightens so you know what's happening. Quickly you turn around and press her face against your neck as her body clenches, feeling her hot breath against your throat. Her hand reaches up into your hair, and just then you hear Alexis give a triumphant cry, throwing her arms up.

'YES! YES! GOT YOU! Haha!' She turns to you. 'Did you see that?'

You look at the pile of former Eaglion and take a guess. 'Nice Throughstrike!'

'Never fails!' She leans in and pecks your face again, seemingly oblivious to Erica's state of post-release relaxation. Then she goes back to the screen and claps a hand over her mouth.

'You're fucking kidding me.'

'What is-' it's a Winged Hussar Breastplate, with a set of Eaglion Covert Fletchings. Not quite the Mace of Aronkunian Power, but...

'This thing's worth 220 bucks last time I checked,' Alexis says. 'Ohhh yes!'

Erica simply nibbles at your neck, and you look down at your wet hands. Wait, it's 35 minutes past 3 now...

> Damn. Head off to meet Jo?

You lick your fingers clean, and then move off in a blur, kissing Alexis on the forehead at the door before running down to catch the Metro.

Amazingly, owing to entirely average luck, you get to the place just 10 minutes late. Wait a minute. The building before you is... well it's not a building, really, it's more like a yard that's shuttered. Then you realise you're looking at the backyard of a low office building, and go in.

It's at the second floor landing that you eventually find Jo, in a navy blue blouse and grey trousers - the deal-cutting sort of look. Except her face looks more confused than anything. Then she glances at you, and it turns into horror.

'Hey, Jo.'

'What the living *fuck* happened to you?!' She comes up and reaches for your face, placing it so gently against the bruise that it only hurts a bit. Then she takes a little vial of perfume and sprays two puffs at you. 'You smell of sweat.'

'Well, I got into a fight for a bet with that guy you knew.'

'What, Merton? Then he's dead now I gather?' She's still fussing over your bruises, looking genuinely concerned.

'No, not Merton. One of his friends. Muscles. Pretty hard punch.'

'Phelan? Holy shit, Phelan did this to you?'

'I did worse to him. It's fine. I got $800 out of it too. I'm fine, man, relax!' You grin. 'Well, what happened here with you? You look rather confused.'

'Yeah, well, I've been here ten minutes, and there isn't any office I was looking for. It's the management office of Aaninen Co. I'm after. But nothing.'

Huh. 'No one from the Aaninen Co. either?'

'Nope. Which is weird considering they're holding a meeting, isn't it?' Jo frowns.

> Once again, Questions, Ideas, Hustles, Things you'd like to Do, all welcome. You may have realised the fundamentals of the quest by now. You'll have to make your own lov- entertainment!

'Wait. So what, is this some kind of trap?'

'There's no reason to trap us,' Jo shrugs. 'And no, they'd be after me unless you made some really powerful enemies last night, so not really.'

'Who told you to come here anyway?'

The thing about Joanna is, she's intelligent and bright and everything, but sometimes there's just an angle she forgets to cover while covering every other. Once you ask that question, her eyes widen in horror and she looks at you.

'Oh fuck. It was an email from the announcer, but they could be bent themselves!' She whips out her smartphone (ah, the irony) and, after a minute, slaps her forehead so hard you can tell she's really angry at herself. Also, holy shit, poor forehead!

'Fuuuuck. It's all the way over at Whitegrove!' She looks up. 'Goddamn it, I am, a, fucking retard, is what I am!'

'Not really, no...'

'Should we still try to go there? It's 20 minutes past now. Meeting's supposed to last an hour...'

Something to think about if we need a ranged weapon.

probably easier to just forget about this one. We got fucked, and it's less than likely that salvaging the situation will be more effective than simply finding another hustle.

We've got a bit of cash. We could invest in some glassware and start cooking in a shed or something. Could get the equipment needed to print off fake IDs for the kiddies.

There's an extortion gig we need to get to as well, and we could text or call Bethany to see if she's still interested in moving in. That'd lighten the rent load.
>>
>>27574644
I'd agree with that.

I think we're going to have to ditch this job.

We can go out drinking on Merton's dollar instead, and put this one down to a learning experience.

Then tomorrow we can pursue those other options you suggested.
>>
