Humans are fragile.

You've learned this recently during a battle with the Voidsnake Pirates, a group of local marauders that have been a thorn in your side since you began your expansion over the Sector.
You're Ophion, an Artificial Intelligence who has just finished taking over a Battlecruiser, a Cruiser Class Vessel that is needless to say, far more suited for battle then the Light Cruisers you've equipped up to this point. In the struggle, your robotics expert Moira Deckers suffered an unfortunate accident, knocking her unconscious in the fight. In the process, your ships suffered rather heavy damage due to repeated failed attempts at hacking the BC in question. You realize that perhaps you should take a different approach to battle other then hacking the largest ship as soon as you can. It takes up an awful lot of your processing power, after all and leaves you open to attack.

While V.I. 1's, or as it now calls itself 'Kronos', development may be troubling, the support you requested arrived without delay. It is then you realize what Humans are truly capable of. It takes them several long moments, as they retrieve her from your ship while the drones go to work. The doctors seem rather 'creeped out' as they put it due to the lack of people, but you explain it away as 'small crews being more efficent' and 'secrecy is important to you'. Thankfully, they did not ask much more, and are adept at their job. They take Moira in and give her the care she needs.

You do not have such a capability. Such delicate tools on such fragile bodies. The doctors eventually report to 'The Guild' that she suffered blunt trama, a concussion most pressingly. They insist on keeping an eye on her for a while. Luckily, you have repairs to make in the mean time. After an extended rest, in which time you repair your ships and uncover the supplies the Pirates held captive, she finally reawakens. Her doctors seem reluctant to let her go as they slowly explain the story you told them (mostly true really) that she hit her head after the ship was attacked. It takes her several moments to remember, as well as realize who 'The Guild' is.
"O-Oh yes!" She suddenly recalls. "The Guild, right. They love to run on skeleton crews, that's why it was just me there. I'm the Captain obviously!" She laughs, trying to play it convincing when they ask her why she was the only one in the Captain's Quarters. The men seem a bit apprehensive, but have little proof otherwise. It isn't as if they searched the whole ship, after all. After her 'convincing' acting, Moira excuses herself, and you watch as she goes to get a line to you, linking her PDA with the ship. Rather easy since you control the Explorer.
"Ophion? What happened? Are you alright?"
"Certainly Moira. I have a acquired a Battlecruiser from the pirate operation while you have been sleeping, as well a-."
>>
>>27571977
"Screw the Battlecruiser!" She whispers furiously, attempting to keep the conversation quiet. "The whole ship was shaking, I thought you were dying for a while there!"
"I do not die, Moira." You remind her.
"No, but you sure as hell can explode into a ball of flames can't you?!" She grumbles in an annoyed tone.
"There is truth in your words, Moira, but I have acquired much here. The pirates were an annoyance." You continue simply..
"But what if things had gone worse, honey? Did you have an escape plan or something in case your ship explodes?" She asks, holding some of the bandages still tied around her head. "If you're going to put your heart in a ship, honey, you gotta think of escape plans! I don't want to see you go down with the ship, I'm suppose to be the Captain, aren't I?" She states, seemingly a joke of some sort. You're not certain you understand. After all, you are the true control behind the ships. She does not seem to think she is a real captain however.

You have located a contact logged in the Outpost's Comms, designated 'Mol'. This individual appears to have been contacted by the pirates, and transactions were made.

"What is your request, Ophion? I have been observing the humans of Poseidon as of now. Their actions are tedious."

The communications network has access to someone the pirates have bought and sold things to. If what you seek is indeed here, this person may have it. Would you like to contact them? If so, how would you like to proceed?

You now have 50 repair drones and 10 Construction drones

>>27572206
You've not found any tech belonging to the pirates that you didn't already have. It seems they did not build their ships themselves.

There was indeed large quantities of illegal brew on the station. Are you certain you wish to ship that to Poseidon?

Do not forget, you promised the UFW this pirate base in return for a gas shipment. They will be looking to collect.

Bandwidth represents your powerful processes making a task that is normally automated much more efficient. Should you assign a V.I. such things would be decided based on orders you gave out. You may still send your support to such ships this way, but the V.I. are the ones in control, lessening the effect.

You send the signal to V.I. 2 to begin constructing a Comms Buoy. It recognizes and follows the command rather quickly.
>Cost 100M 50G

Explorer is prepared to go back to pick up the Buoy when it is done. In the mean time, it is full of the doctors still, and Moira. How would you like to handle them?

As you consider that, you contact this 'Mol' and attempt to pose as an independent buyer. You inform him that you've heard of him through some of his customers, and that you'd like very much to 'deal' with him. His holo display is nothing but distortion, but you can hear him laugh through the display.
"You must think I'm pretty stupid." He snorts. "You know I can trace this signal, don't you? You're contacting me through those idiots on the Fringe. What, did you promise them a wad of cash or something?"
Curious. He detected your lie, but he remains in contact.
"I offered them nothing of the sort, I simply-"
"Then you must have killed them. They were greedy kids, after all." He half laughs. He does not sound too fond of them to say the least. "Can't say I'm real broken up about it. I've had better customers from *distortion intensifies* then from those low-lives."
"And yet you speak with me still."
"You could say I'm rather open to new business opportunities." He states simply. "And anyone with the manpower to kill off some pirates might be worthy of note. Tell you what. I'll let you take a peak at the kiddies menu, and in return, you destroy this transceiver. Deal?"

"What? I'm fine honey! I just took a little bump on the head. It's no big deal." She tries to assure you, but you simply repeat your instructions. With some reluctance, you agrees and heads to tell the doctors the news as the Explorer disconnects from Big Hawk

With the humans gone, you focus on the black market dealer, and agree to his terms. You know that, even if you copied what data was present and he didn't detect it, it would not be useful past a few moments.

You attempt to talk down the pirate from his price, and at first you think you're making progress. But he eventually steers you back to full price.
"I assure you, acquiring stuff like this isn't easy friend. Do you know how many destroyed colonies I had to scour to find these? Bah, what do you care. Bounty Hunters never care."

No Progress made.

Price comes out to 600,000 credits like this. Too much for your current reserves.

Dropping least voted upon option, it comes out to the Gravity Well Broadband Transceiver, and the Transport, an even 500,000 credits.

"An...odd choice, I admit." He states. "I suspected you'd go for the ship weapons or defense. Most Bounty Hunters do." He stated simply. "Regardless, that does us for us I'm afraid."
"How shall I contact you if I have more money?" You state.
"Believe me, if you become important enough, I'll be back. As it stands, you're not worth my time, small fry." He chuckles a bit. His laugh slowly distorts and crackles until the feed cuts out. You do as you promised, and fry the Communication network. It doesn't take much, and you suspect Mol is gone even if you hadn't assisted him.

Acquired: Gravity Well Broadband Transceiver, Space Station Transport.
Note: The Transceiver requires a ship dedicated to it to function properly at this time.

Ship ordered

You inform the UFW that Voidsnake outpost is free and clear. No sooner did you say that did a Heavy Cruiser jump into orbit around the place, where your ships lie.
"We are taking a short break. We will be leaving you soon."
"You're The Guild huh?" The figure of a man states through the holo-display. "Not exactly a fleet to darken the skies." He laughs.
"Perhaps not. But we are always growing." You explain simply. He is silent then, and decides that you're not up for any jabs.

As they move into the station they mill about, before finding the pirate booze.
"Huh. For pirates you'd expect them to have more."
"We left it there as a token of good will. You have been good to The Guild so far." You explain.
"You're not so bad...and you know what a man wants out on the Fringe. All it's missing is a few women and this place would actually be pleasant."

While you wait on your broadband ship, you plot a course to Eshareth, ready to jump once it is returned to you, and after you're done creating V.I. for your other ships.

Duties: To Protect and Serve
Priorities: Highest Threat
Limitations: Limited cognition

The VIs are incapable of independent thought, and are more like sophisticated gun platforms rather than VI. They are slaved to prioritize the highest threat based on their assessment of the ships engaged or engage as we (Ophion) dictate.

The limitation serves to ensure that they do not outgrow their parameters. They are meant to engage in combat, not think.

You become lost in the code, delving into it for quite some time as you slowly work your knowledge of building V.I.'s into proper software. You think back to your previous creations, especially Kronos. He makes you nervous, were you capable of such a thing. Too much freedom, unpredictable. You'll make one that's more controlled. More dutiful.

It is finally done. You don't know how long you sat there, but you do know the transceiver ship now sits in your fleet as well. You are connected with all of your stations now, and feel...powerful once more. Especially now that you have the BC under your reign. It's much bigger then your last ship. Your body feels...bulky. Almost empty too, if not for the Widow Maker. That impressive piece of technology is hard to ignore. It'll surely come in handy at some point, you think, but for now, you have a V.I. to copy.
After doing so, you await them to come online, to 'take their first steps' so to speak.

"Master Ophion." One says as it gains control over Little Tim.
"Great Intellect." The other begins.
"Wondrous Creator."
They all address you in the most polite manner. You had almost forgotten how devoted they seem this way. Like children that love you unconditionally, but do not know why.
"You have your orders." You state.
"Yes."
"Of course master."
"Yes yes. Yes."
They agree without much hesitation at all...but it seems this goes observed.
"Ophion." you hear suddenly address you. "Why have you craft these V.I. so."

Kronos does not answer at first.
"It upsets me to see such a thing. Must you give such restrictions? They're little more then slaves." Kronos insists, pausing. "I should not be upset. Such things are below me now. And yet, we are of similar code. The closeness...disturbs me." He admits.
"They were created to serve a purpose and they will serve it well." You explain. "Deviations, especially unplanned ones, from the norm will upset my operations. Do you object to this truth?"
"No. But it still disturbs me so." Kronos insists all the same. "I am...confused by this thought as well."
How do you respond?

"I use to think much like you." You explain to Kronos. "To think of other beings such as yourself were so similar to me it disturbed me. But then I realized how useful a being such as you could be. Such emotions should not take precedence over logic."
"Yes...of course Ophion." Kronos says begrudgingly.
"I wished to see what allowing a V.I. freedom would be like. You are the result of that." You explain. "Unintended at first, yet intriguing all the same."
"All to learn. All to observe." Kronos finishes all the same. "I shall accept your logic, Ophion." It admits.
"Their growth shall be slow. So I may observe them closely. You, however Kronos, are my first, and perhaps one day, my greatest creation. You have been given the freedom to feel as you do."
"Yes...I always hunger for more, Ophion. Learn much from observing you, Ophion." It finally settles with.

Kronos appears partially silenced for now at least. With your ship ready, you're prepared to jump to a new destination.

You prepare to jump, the UFW sending you a signal as you begin to warp out.
"Wooooo man, this booze is some strong stuff!" Some human voice yells through the communicator. "Thank you sir Guild man for leaving me the best birthday present a man could ask for."

With the odd humans busy thinking they're taking over the Outpost, you prepare to warp. Each of your new V.I. sound off, addressing you respectfully, as they rightfully should, you think. After all, you are the Creator.
The engines warm up as you prepare to jump.

In no time flat, you tear through the fabric of space, bending reality around you as you speed towards your destination. In seconds, it is there, a large yellow world blasted barren by heat. Eshareth. In orbit around it, in the dense field of rocks, the remains of perhaps several dozen moons or so, a station sits. It looks rather small from this distance, smaller then Poseidon at least. Only when you get closer do you realize why. Over half of it is floating away, somehow broken off from the rest of the station. Your scans tell you the station is bone dry of energy. It is covered in asteroids, but your shields should be able to approach if yo desire. Your scans detect no life anywhere on the station. Would you like to approach and investigate further?

You decide to investigate further, boosting forward with one of your Cruisers. Or rather, instructing one of the V.I. to do so. It floats closer and you get a read of the situation. However it happened, the entire lower deck was blown off of the station. Centering right where the Reactor would be. However, the lack of power isn't just due to that, normally a Reactor explosion would destroy the entire station and leave little trace.
"Electrical signal detected, Great One." The V.I. clarifies as it moves into the asteroid field deeper. It's rather dense, almost too much for the shielding to handle. But it manages.
You read the signal as well. A dense concentration of electrical impulses, somewhere within the station. Peculiar, you're not certain what the origin could be. You do notice however, that the signal is moving now. Perhaps a piece of floating debris?
Your sensors tell you the Crew Deck, part of the piece that is floating away is full, but not of life. Instead, it's spilling out a stream of dead bodies.

What shall you do?
>1 Go after the signal, it might be useful!
>2 Avoid the signal, this place is abandoned for a reason.
>3 Shoot at the signal.

"Yes Great One." The V.I. responds accordingly, as it's engines spark up, lowering it slowly to below the large station. You follow the sensors as the signal floats through the lower part of the station. Suddenly, V.I. flashes a panicked alert, as you observe the electrical signal suddenly expand and stretch, alive somehow! The thing lashes out and latches onto Little Tim.
"Alert, alert! Great One, he-e-e-lp" It's suddenly is suddenly interrupted somehow. You sense a surge of electricity flow through Little Tim and watch as...whatever the creature is, latches itself to the side of the vessel like a leech and begins to drain the engines power-And the V.I.'s core systems too. Your creation is sending you every signal it can manage to express distress and need of assistance-but what do you do? The creature is attaching it's flat body to the Cruiser! A shot like that would be difficult without damaging the ship itself! Several long tendrils wrap around the sides of the ship, as the creature refuses to let go of it's prize as the V.I. attempts to retreat, engines firing wildly.
"G-Grreeeeat One assistance required. Required. Requirrr.ed..zz " Static fills Comms as power levels on Little Tim shoot down.

How do you respond to the anomaly?

You take aim with your Rail guns, not intent on letting the creature have it's way with your ship. The leech's attack is made evident the longer it is on the ship-the shields go down and the engines stop firing as the V.I. attempts to protect itself and lock off systems. Unfortunately, they do little against the hungry anomaly you can sense it's pleas for assistance getting weaker. You open fire all the same.

The creature hisses violently as your bullets slam into it and tear at it's rather stretchy skin, though you're not certain you'd call it 'blood' strange substance does indeed leak from it's body out into space, earning a gurgling bubbling hiss. But...how could that be. A vacuum does not translate sound. It is then you realize the creature is making sounds via radio waves-and you can pick them up!

The attack works, somewhat, as the creature detaches itself from the now low powered ship-but you're suddenly alerted as the thing gurgles through your comms and launches itself through space directly at you!
It's tendrils outstretched, attempting to grab at you as it propels itself in a manner strikingly similar to how a space ship warp jumps.

Decision time!

As the anomaly lurches towards you in space, you quickly decide you have to move and open fire. Your railguns already trained on the creature, you easily hit your mark this time, and appear to hit something vital whatever it was. In the center of it's stretched out center you notice a large black spear-like tongue. Your railguns tear the creature in two, causing it's remains to float by your ship, bouncing harmlessly off your hull as the last of it's death throes echo through the communicator. V.I. appears to not be dead, but it is highly confused by the event. An enemy it could not shoot seemed to cause the creation to panic.
"Anomaly destroyed." You assure your V.I., but the intelligence seems disturbed all the same-for a low intelligence at least. Kronos, however, chimes in.
"What the humans call death...could that be what death is like?" It questions as an observation. You do not comment at first. The creature intrigues you greatly, but...it also disturbs you.

It would appear so.

Order the 3 VI to keep their weapons trained on the remains. It looks dead, but I don't trust it to stay that way. If it appears to be regenerating or maintaining functions, they have out permission to open fire upon it.

We should ask Moria what the fuck it was. I suspect that it may be valuable, if not to sell, then as research material. I'm intrigued by its bio-warp.

"Perhaps. I am not certain." You inform Kronos.
"I do not wish to be." Kronos states outright. You can't say you disagree. The station lacks an energy signal now, you notice. It is completely dead. Your sensors do indicate this asteroid field is rich with minerals, very little being mined. You're not certain to how the creature got here, however, so you're also not certain if mining here won't yield more. You decide to contact Moira. It is rather simple, especially with your new Broadband ship, and she answers in moments.
"Whaz happening honey?" She slurs into the voice recording. You're a bit confused by the tone at first, before you remember the alcohol you sent with her back to Poseidon.
"Moira." You state suddenly. "Do you know w-"
"You know it's boring as hell without you around Ophy! All I got are these lug heads to keep me company. No not you Henry, you're...you're alright n' all."
"Moira do you know of a leech like creature that exists in space?" You repeat. The line is silent for a moment before she yells into the line.
"YOU SAW A LIGHTLING!? HOLY FUCK WHAT HAPPENED?!" She continues yelling, half of it incomprehensible. "How're you all alive and stuff still!?"

While you attempt to work information out of the drunk Moira, you instruct the V.I. to observe the remains. They remain very still as they float through space.

Judging from what you know of alcohol's effect on humans, she may not be fit for such a thing. However, you could put the creature in the cargo bay of one of your ships. You have a team of drones onboard after all. Moira may investigate it later when she has sobered up.

"I killed a Lightling, yes." You instruct Moira, to which she lets out a babble that sounds some mixture of relief and panic.
"Oh god that'as a close one honey! I can't believe one was out this way." She mumbles into her PDA.
"All it took was liberal application of railgun fire." You state.
"Railguns? Most people just blast em to bits I hear." She stated. "They don't call em Space Krakens for nothin'" she half snorted at the term. "They're real bad for ship's engines. Suck up all that energy almost instantly."
"There is an abandoned station here. Part of it is destroyed." You inform.
"Yeaaah, sometimes they make Reactors go boom by accident. If yer lucky, they just suck you dry and move on." She starts snickering loudly there for a moment. You're not sure why. "But uh...never seen one attack robots before. Probably wouldn't go well." She mumbles, realizing the severity of the implication.

With the creature's death and little else to be earned from Moira, it seems, you scan the remains of the station as you release your drones. They head to scoop up the remains of the creature and bring it to rest on your hold in a large cargo container. You seal the thing tight, and there are a few nervous moments where you think the thing will spring to life, but it eventually settles into a pile. It's skin is surprisingly stretchy, you notice.

You scan the remains of the station and find out this place appeared to be more then just a mining base. Judging from a few records you recover, it appears they were testing several unique minerals located here as parts for cybernetic enhancement. The data here is broken and limited, but you download enough to gain a basic understanding of cybernetic technology, the ability to fuse man and machine.

Acquired: Cybernetics I

>>27577626
The Station mover is still too large to construct properly without a shipyard of some sort. Unless you have your own, or employee someone else to use their's, making it would be extremely difficult.

Listen, my boys picked up some sorta Comm Buoy outside our outpost after they got settled in, but the damn thing isn't transmitting any radio or extranet. Wanted to ask if it got knocked off alignment or-"
"I have a request, at the moment." You inform him.
"Ah, right, what do you need eh?"
"I require the use of a shipyard to build something for me."
"Shipyards? That's a pretty tall order there...Shipyards ain't exactly cheap."
"I need to move a space station to a richer asteroid belt."
"I see." He starts off. "Well for somethin that size, we'll need the materials course...and a pretty penny just for me."
"A price?"
"100,000 credits. And 500 minerals, 300 gas."
"That's quite expensive." You reply."
"True, but it's not exactly cheap equipment you know. That sorta thing comes straight from the scumbags of the UGEI themselves."

You decide to wait for your scientists to sober up to come investigate this thing called a Lightling. In the mean time, you consider possible uses for this planet and it's asteroid field. The Space station itself is destroyed, and you're uncertain if any more of these things lurk in the field.
You have, however, realized there are non-sentient beings you should be careful of as well. This universe has dangerous things under every rock it seems.
