What the shit is up with this game? Did people actually play it?

The world of Glorantha is kind of interesting a little bit. But seriously? What the hell?
>>
>>27607884

Yeah, people played it. What about it?

Also Glorantha is the best setting ever m8, I'll fight you.
>>
>>27607927
Why would they play that instead of a better game like DnD.

And, while it has some good bits, Glorantha just tries to hard to be different. Really elves are plants? Ducks? Dragon things that are "lol so randumb!"

Glorantha has probably the best treatment of magic and religion I've ever seen in a fantasy game that wasn't specifically focused on them.

Ducks are fucking retarded, but most everything else is pretty cool. As far as mechanics go, I quite like the skill system that RQ uses, though I do think that some of the shit they stack on top makes things more complicated than it needs to be.

Oh no, no. Thay aren't simple and they aren't orcs. The Uz are actually one of the best takes I've seen on the token monstrous and brutish race.

See, basically the Uz are total bros. They had their own little paradise down in the underworld and everything was good. And then Orlanth fucked everything up. Again.

That shouldn't be very hard. Mongoose Runequest 2 has a sourcebook for the ducks. Also HeroQuest 2 has some really, really kickass setting books for Glorantha.

when people start intentionally misusing words like "animu special snowflake", they're pretty obvious trolls that the janitors tend to clean up if they're brought to their attention.

it's been the reason i never got into D&D for over two decades now. thank you basic roleplaying. to be fair it's been some swedish reimaginations of the concept and setting along with the same of gamma world, but still with basic roleplaying attached to it.

RQ and BRP, later Stormbringer and most of all Call of Cthulhu, showed what RPGaming was really about (course there was also Traveller befor that).
>>
>>27608211

The HeroQuest 2 ones do focus on the Orlanthi so far. As for other groups there are a whole goddamn lot, far too many to describe accurately in a sigle post. I could make a quick summary if you like, though.

A lot. They are completely different systems.

Runequest is based on (well really lead to but still closely related) BRP so it is percentile based.

Heroquest 2 is based on d20roll vs d20roll.

weird, no. sad, yes, very. it's a shame RQ aint a big name (outside of places like scandinavia that mostly know it from their own versions of it and its influence on their RPGaming market).

then again its heavy on history, culture and emulating the setting with its system and trusting the GM to make the interesting choises for an entertaining time for everyone involved, instead of system balance through forced class progression and obsessive resource equations (distrust of DM and players alike).

>>
>>27608346
>So is it expected PCs will generally be Orlanthi?

The Orlanthi are the most fleshed out and popular, yeah. You don't have to be one, though.

As for other cultures, we have the Lunar Empire. They worship the Goddess of the Red Moon, who's a bit of a newcomer and also a foe of Orlanth. Other than that they're an expansionist empire who practise a syncretistic and tolerant religion (as long as you don't worship Orlanth that is) and are very progessive and flexible culturally.

Unfortunately their goddess also has links to Chaos, which is generally regarded as A Bad Thing, Chaos being the formless nonbeing that Glorantha floats around in like an oversized Sno Globe. Chaos doesn't like this very much, and wuld prefer if that pesky little world would just dissolve into the ur-muck already.

The Lunars themselves consider this an unfortunate necessity in order to control Chaos and prevent it from spreafing harm, while the Orlanthi consider this a sure sign that all Lunars are Chaos-worshipping scum who should be killed on sight. This has led to conflict.

This is also a pretty dumbed down version that doesn't go into the theological side of things, which is pretty interesting in its own right.
>>
>>27608311
Kind of weird. It's one of D&D's most famous competitors, and gets brought up in passing when we talk about Chaosium's Basic Role Playing system pretty often. I've seen it shared quite a bit, as well.
>>
>>27608490
I don't know about other people, but for me it's much too inflexible a setting. What happens if a player wants to be (X) race? It's generally not gonna be able to happen.
>>
>>27608425
The charm wears off quickly, I assure you. It's a nice enough place, but incredibly vacuous, and the populated areas are rapidly turning into Little Somolia.

I've found that almost every problem that can be found with living in America can be solved by moving further West, and then further North as the problems persist.

>>
>>27608490

I don't know. I'm not an American so I can't quite say why it never got big there. Obviously it's huge here, atleast in the way it's inspired the Swedish RPGs (almost every one coming directly or indirectly from RQ and the other BRP related settings and the system), even if maybe the more resent generations don't know RQ by name (atleast the know the local BRP games like Trudvang, Mutant Undergångens Arvtagare, Kult, Eon, Western and so on and on and on).

>>
>>27608490

Almost right, just the spelling of Aldryami was off.

The Westerners tend to be called Malkioni.

The tall athletic people are the Agimori Men-and-a-half. A race of demigods from the southlands, who moved to prax in the age of gods. Most Agimori arn't as tall and powerful as them, such as this Pithdaran wizard, who wears elevated shoes and a tall hat to reach the ritual height required for his magics.

remember the first and only rule: the GM is always right.

in RQ/BRP the game trusts the GM, it hands the GM a set of system mechanics that simulates the setting and supports the GM in the GMs work, but it is up to the GM to decide what to include and what not to include in making the game as fun as possible for the players and the GM. BRP puts trust in the GM to know what will be most entertaining for teh players and hands teh GM the tools to explore that option.

If the GM thinks so then yes you can play them. That is the BRP way.

Unlike D&D which do its absolute best to enforce as much as possible so no one ha sto trust any one except the "rule" book.

The problem is that the original Dwarves are almost all gone, and no one's exactly sure about the best way to fix the world.

Think sapient Tapir people who herd unintelligent human-like-creatures. (There was a big contest before time where all the groups of people and animals had to engage in contests to see who would win. In all cases but the Morokanth's, the humans won. Everyone says the Morokanth cheated. The Morokanth say that's because the humans were cheating first.)
>>

I thought the Morokanth said that they didn't cheat it was obviously the humans who cheated because they won every other time.

It was actually reading that story that got me to stop hating Morokanth and respect them in their own way.

Though we should dispell the horrid rumors that they turn normal men into beasts.
>>

Yeah, but that's why they cheated, because if they didn't they would have lost, so they pretended to be stupid and diseased, so Waha paired them up with the stupid men (who he was worried about pairing up with anyone else)

And yeah, the herdmen arn't humans, although they're nearly human. They're herbivores for one. Of course, the Morokanth do keep human slaves. But all praxians do that, and keep Morokanth as slaves.

And of course, they all raid each other to capture animals to slaughter. Which means that they're perfectly prepared to eat herdman.

The whole notion of Evil in Gloranthra in general is actually all kinds of fucked up. Chaos is just absurd the unholy trio is the god of madness, goddess of rape and goddess of disease. With a bunch of minor footnote dead gods like a god of cancer. Everything they do is incredibly foul and just the worst. They exist as a comic cancer outside the world and underworld. They are the worst as demons or other things might kill you but powerful chaos creatures can kill your soul.

On the other hand you have Demons. Specific underworld creatures native to Glorantha and have a part of their specific pantheon. They can be evil and cruel but they are at least part of this world.

In Dara Happa there is a city called Alkoth which is literally hell on earth. Demons roam a cyclopean city that constantly rains black ash as damned souls and ghosts wail in torment. The human population is all by divine ritual considered already dead as only the dead can enter or at least partially avoid the attentions of the Lovecraftian horrors that dwell there.

People who are cultists insane or otherwise and their descendants. The whole city is enclosed in a massive jade wall which is the Torc of Shargash the destroyer. Which bound him to peace but fell off in the gods time when he was loosed to slay.

The city as its depicted is just mad stuff. Like lovecraft meets GWAR. Living humans dragging cages of the unworthy dead to faceless demons who then fall upon them burning their souls and raising them as eternally burning and suffering hellmen from the black ash. Its hard to tell if anyone is actual dead or alive there. The book Dara Happa stirs has a lot of info on it.

The forced ritual of mock execution on visistors to prepare them and mark them as dead is the best.

How can people actually like Lunars?

Is it just me or is the Crimson Bat OP?
>>
The troll here reminds me of fucking Vroom Vroom. Has he moved on from Battletech?
>>
>>27613607
Okay, firstly. (And obviously, YGWV)

I figure that Dragonnewts, and Dragons, are effectively heroquesting in the mundane world all the time. They're constantly following a script no one else can see for the purpose of advancing spiritually, which grants them amazing powers, but leaves them flatfooted if anything goes wrong.

Imagine that you're doing the Orlanth and Aroka quest, and suddenly Daga seduces Orlanth. That's what it's like to a Dragonnewt when someone doesn't recognise their dance is one of greeting.

Dragonnewts seem to be able to see into the future because of this script, but just like how the Orlanth and Aroka quest doesn't tell you about Elmal Guards the Stead, this doesn't mean Dragonnewts know everything which will happen. And just as you can die in a quest due to bad luck, so can they.

Secondly, the Lunars have a very sympathetic mindset to modern perspectives. They're civilized, arn't as paranoid, sexist and racist as others, and are quite accepting. The problem is that they're Glorantha's version of neopagans. Going around claiming everyones goddesses are actually aspects of this one great goddess associated with the moon, and how what seems evil is actually just oppression from the status quo.

And thirdly: What do you expect from a God? The problem is that it's in our world, when most arn't.

Calling that a tall order is the understatement of the millennium, but this quote from 1d4chan should give you an idea of that it's like:

>Dwarves are cogs of the world machine, Elves are plant elementals who like to bust a nut, the world is a d6 in a sea of Mountain Dew, history gets re-written every two and a half seconds, Dragons are the size of continents, you visit the Gods in Valhalla every Thursday, Bob has a mincer that can turn an entire bison into burgers, and the best spell is "Leap Through Window to Avoid Angry Husband".

I tried to do a genealogy of the deities of Glorantha and nearly went insane. Calling it a cat's cradle is a charitable assessment; trying to depict it in a two-dimensional format is a fucking nightmare (literally). I'll post what I came up with in a bit.

Okay, how to put this. "Bronze age", human centric fantasy world. Religion, Superstition and Philosophy are indistinguishable from Magic. And are, for all intents and purposes.

The nonhumans typically are nonhuman. Skin colour's not as important to most gloranthans, as your biggest foe are the people the next hill over. It doesn't really matter if they're black, yellow, red, white or blue. What matters is they have something you want, or they killed your grandfather.

The wiki helps immensely, as does some of the old material from the Moon Design website. A lot of it comes from various rulebooks and sourcebooks that I acquired legally on the internet. One of the biggest hurdles is that every myth in Glorantha is true, even the ones that contradict the other ones. For instance, Hykim's parentage is disputed, and this doesn't account for that.

Anyway, here it is. And I should note that it's still incomplete by a fair bit. Also I left off most of the Vingkoting parts in it, but the whole thing also traces the lineages of Heort and Harmast Barefoot.

Italics mean that that person is found somewhere else in the genealogy and should be mentally linked there (sorry, but I don't have three dimensions to work with).

>>
I want to know more about the magic sistem. And about the Hsunchen or the hell they are called.
>>
>>27622402

Broadly speaking there are three kinds of magic:

The first is Rune Magic which draws power from the Runes, which are the fundamental building blocks of Glorantha. The Runes are usually controlled by the gods, so Rune Magic can be said to come from the gods, and you use it by emulating what a certain god did back in the day. So if you have the Air Rune, you essentailly can throw a lightning bolt at someone because you've learned the secret to do so from the cult of Orlanth. Converserly the gods can also cut you off if you piss them off somehow.

The thing to remember here is that a runic connection is something that you are. The stronger your connection with a rune is, the mre do you start to embody the rune itself. For example, someone with a strong connection to the Air Rune tends to be passionate, proud and unpredictable.

(cont)
>>
>>27622595

The second type is Spirit magic, which works by binding allied spirits into charms and using their power to do magic. This is very versatile, but spirits are strange and unpredictable and you have to appease or trick them into serving you.

Spirits are something you have, and thus something that you can lose. If a spirit magician loses his spirits, he can't do shit, which is a pretty big drawback.

(cont)
>>
>>27622613

The third type of magic is Sorcery. This is the form closest to the classical wizard type, with book learning and grimoires and shit. Sorcery works by using spells, which are essentialy manifestations of the Universal Law of Glorantha.

Spells are something you know, so nobody can take them away from you. Spells are also extremely effective at doing one thing, much moreso than Rune or Spirit magic. The first drawback is that a single spell is only good for doing one specific thing, e.g. a spell of "set wood on fire" would set wood on fire really, really well, but if you wanted to set grass on fire it wouldn't work at all.

The second drawback is that you need to learn the spells, which takes time, effort and either a teacher or a spell grimoire.

The third drawback is that the most powerful sorcerous traditions are extremely conservative and hidebound and the spells are designed in such a way that they simply don't work unless you meet the requirements and obey the ritual taboos of the order.

Oh, and the people who mainly use sorcery are either a bunch of asshole monotheists whose not-Bible also happens to be one of the most powerful spellbooks or a bunch of isolationist asshole atheists who are led by the literal Sorcerer Supreme.
>>
>>27622613

Can't you also enter into the spirit world too, to wrangle those incorporeal bastards into doing your shit?
>>
>>27622725

Yeah, but that's more high-level shit. Normally you search out some spirits and negotiate with them in the normal world.
>>
>>27622741
What kind of spirits you can controll? Things like demon and shit or more elemental things like salamanders?
>>
>>27622963

Spirits and demons are different things. There are both fire spirits and fire demons, but a Spirit magician could only control the spirit.

And spirits can be pretty much anything. You never really know what one will do before you identify it, but you can make an educated guess. The exact kinds of spirits you usually can control depends on your spirit society tradition, so a Kolating shaman usually controls spirits of the air, but that's not a hard rule either.

Spirit magic be weird, man.
>>
>>27623030
Jeez, now I want to know more. I'm all for Spirits and demons in a more old fashion way (like the medieval ones) than the tipical DnD stuff. Who are the kolating Shamans for example? How do you bind a spirit? Can you bind demons or control them? And speaking of them, what are exactly the spirits and what are the demons if they aren't the same?
>>
>>27623101

Demons in Glorantha is a general term for physical manifestations of Rune Magic. For example, Salamanders are manifestations of the Fire Rune and a sufficiently strong Fire Rune magician can summon and command them. Demons are mostly mindless with a few exceptions.

Spirits, on the other hand, come from the Spirit World, which is kind of a mirror of Glorantha except not really. They are unrelated to the Runes and can be anything from your deceased ancestors to a local folk hero to a huge-ass fire spirit who likes to burn oaks. Spirits are strange as all hell, but they have likes and needs and you usually can't just command them as you could with demons.

Kolating shamans are the shaman of the Orlanthi, i.e. the good ol' celtic storm vikings. They usually bind spirits by gambling with them for favours or by offering the spirit something it wants. This all includes a lot of shrooms and drumming and weird-ass chants and shit like that.

Other shamanic traditions focus more on calling on your ancestors, which usually is easier than binding random-ass spirits, but if you do something they disapprove of they might just decide to curse you instead.

Basically summarizing this shit is hard, because one of the defining aspects of Glorantha is that everybody does magic slightly differently depending on your cultural traditions. For example, Orlanthi don't usually use Spirit magic, and Sorcery is taboo with one exception.
>>

To give a slightly more useful answer, the Orlanthi god of knowledge Lhankor Mhy possesses a magic cipher device known as the Alien Combination Machine. Followers of Lhankor Mhy who have the Law rune can use this device to "decontaminate" sorcerous spells.

Some of the magic is a bit broken if the players don't self-censor (looking at you Enhance attribute), and some of the rules wording is a bit dodgy/unclear. Also the vanilla tactical grid movement rules are a complete clusterfuck and should be homebrewed to a more simplified ruleset (I go with one AP to move, two move actions a round. Half your movement rate is your walking speed. If you sac all your AP at the start of a round you can sprint).

Besides that its pretty good. Combat is nice and got good flow and depth without becoming needlessly complex and CharGen is nice and flexible.

I know that I can decide because all myths are true, even contradictory ones.

I would, but he was obliterated from existence so I can't.

Wakboth The Devil was 100% distilled Chaos, mang.

I hope you drove their goddamn clan out into the fucking marsh or something.

I just heard that Wakboth apparently raped Glorantha. I do not know if I should take that literally (how it that even possible?) or if it just means he caused a lot of destruction to the land.

Given that he is chaos I would not put either past him.

Seriously? You thing elves as forest spirits is somehow different? You think Ducktale ducks are included to be different, instead of included to be ducktales? You think Dragons having multiple life stages is "lolsorandum" as opposed to just a way to keep Dragons as both super powerful and as viable antagonists?

No, good sir. You must troll smarter rather than harder.

She's basically Sekhmet, but an earth goddess with an axe and a serious case of misandry.

Not to be fucked with, although I think when she gets wasted she hooks up with Eurmal.

>Uleria, whom Eurmal had tried to seduce many times but failed, heard this and decided to have some fun. She dressed in her finest clothes and walked by Eurmal, who tried to ignore her but changed the way he was standing. Uleria then started to remove her clothing, very slowly, and smiled at Eurmal who had to use a sporran to hide his embarrassment. When Uleria removed all her clothes and started to show Eurmal what he was missing, those who looked on thought that Eurmal was holding a pink spear which almost took his eye out. Finally, Uleria used the rest of her charms and Eurmal would have been lost except that Orlanth called to him to attend. Eurmal could not see the Storm God in his condition, especially after Orlanth's threat, and because he could not easily walk, he snapped off the pink spear and threw it to Uleria with a laugh. Uleria took the spear and, deprived of his company and starting to itch, used it for her own pleasure.
I like where this is going.

This game specifically became popular because of how sucky D and D was mechanically at the time. This was seen as the main fantasy alternative. This and RM.
Glorantha also has a cult following due to it's quasimystical Campbellian mythology and the sheer weirdest of it's beastiary.

Your English is nearly perfect; your only mistake was the use of "much" instead of "many".
