You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

Nicolette's managed to drag both you and Sylvie along with her on a trip into town... and before you left, she roped Princess Marianne's personal maid Melanie along as well.

After a morning of shopping, you spotted and captured a guy who was spying on you. He claims that he's working for Marconetti, but that's still up to question...

>Guard Rank: RABBIT
>Congratulations, you are now a nonassuming Rabbit!
>While rabbits are also small mammals, but people actually like having them around!
>The Princess is pretty much indifferent towards you now!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

"...yeah, you're still going to have to come to the castle," you say, your sword still drawn.
"So much for our day off, huh," Nicolette says.
"...I am so dead," the boy mumbles to himself.

You take the lead, holding your sword to the boy just in case he tries anything funny as you walk him through the empty building, down a flight of stairs, and back into the street.

As you make it outside, you're met with a large crowd of guards who have cordoned off the street.

"Guard Captain Nicolette! Are you okay!?" a man in the uniform of the City guard shouts as he and several others run towards you.
"Huh? We didn't call for any guards yet..." you say, surprised by this sudden development.
"Umm, I did that," Melanie says as she appears from behind the crowd of guards. "When you all ran off, I was worried so I found the nearest guard for help. ...sorry for giving your names, but I was really worried, so..."
"...don't worry about it, you did good," Nicolette says to Melanie, smiling. "Sorry for freaking you out like that."

"So what exactly is going on?" a large man wearing a slightly different uniform asks. "Who's the kid?"
"He claims to be here on behalf of the kingdom of Marconetti, looking for potential invaders from Ancellotta." Nicolette replies, having gone into full seriousmode. "Regardless of whether or not he's telling the truth, he still needs to be taken in."
"Hm. Thanks for the hard work," the man says with a salute. "I'm Benoit Marivaux, a City Guard Captain."

>[1/2]
>>
>>27612278
>[2/2]

Benoit turns to his men and signals for them to restrain the young spy.

"I would say that we can take it from here... but upon hearing the young maid's initial report that you were in trouble, a messenger bird was sent to the castle." Benoit says.
"Um, what exactly does that mean?" you ask.
"With Sir Vincent's daughter in potential danger, um..."

Benoit points to the sky, and you can see a man-sized silhouette flying VERY FAST in your general direction.

"...shit," Nicolette mutters as she places her free hand on her forehead.

As the figure's speed suddenly drops off, and you can finally make out a thin frame and blonde hair that you recognize as someone who you were not expecting to see today.

"Sorry for this sudden disturbance, Sir Gregory!" Benoit shouts as he and the other City Guards make a rigid salute.

in form Sir Gregory the whole event (sans the shopping bits) and tie it together when we first had the bad feeling when the princess was shopping the other day. when we get back to the palace, the MC ABSOLUTELY needs to get a sit rep of the political problems Ancellotta, Marconetti, and our nation. that and we will need a run down as to the high threat groups we might encounter when the princess goes abroad soon.

Sir Gregory makes a soft landing and then looks around, running a hand through his hair.

"Zephyr Wing boosted with Tail Wind... hate doing that shit so much," he mumbles to himself. "Nicolette, Sylvie, Reinhold. Are you all okay?"
"Yeah, we're fine," Nicolette replies.
"Um, that's right. We weren't hurt at all," Sylvie joins in.
"Well, that's good to hear..." Sir Gregory lets out a long sigh, his usually foul expression softening a bit. "So, what exactly happened here?"

"Um, after we left that bookstore over there," you say as you point to Marchamp's store, "I felt the same feeling of being watch as I did the other day when I was out here, and traced the source to a nearby empty building. And that's where we found this kid," you say, pointing to the spy.
"...I see," Sir Gregory replies, glancing over to the kid for a second before turning back to you. "So, what's his story?"
"He claims to be here on orders from Marconetti and says that its king is worried about people from Ancellotta sneaking into this country and causing trouble. That's about it," you say.

"Nice looking out, Reinhold," Sir Gregory says, and then turns to Nicolette. "You better step up your game, Nicolette. At this rate, Reinhold's going to make Knight before you're anywhere close to it," he says with a smirk.

"Quit acting like all I do is goof off all day, dammit..." Nicolette mutters under her breath. "So why exactly did you decide to come all the way out here?" she asks.
"Vincent heard about the messenger bird from Arnaud and was about to run all the fuck over here, he was that worried about Sylvie," Sir Gregory says with a sigh. "But I'm a lot faster than he is, and a lot less... -destructive-, so I volunteered to fly out here in his place. And I can't say that I wasn't worried myself..."

He then walks up to the spy, who is being held in place by two guards.

"If you really are from Marconetti, I'm sure that you know exactly who I am," Sir Vincent says, a wicked look on his face.
"Th... the Red Haze..." the blood drains from the spy's face.
"Red Haze, Scarlet Gale, and a plethora of words that describe what happens to people who piss me off, yeah. Since you do know, I'm sure that'll make this a lot simpler. ...unless you want to add to my legend, that is..."
"oh god please don't kill me"

"As long as you cooperate, we might even let you go. But that'll have to wait... You two! Restrain this kid and bring him to the castle for interrogation!" Sir Vincent shouts.
"Yes sir!" the guards bark back.
"And I'll just blow you up if you try to escape en-route so don't even fucking think about it," he says to the spy.

"...so you -did- come here mainly to rub it in," Nicolette says, her face bright red.
"No, that was simply a bonus. Well, I suppose I have work to do..." Sir Gregory turns around and heads in the same direction as the guards.

"Hey, Sir Gregory?" you shout, "How likely is it that that kid was telling the truth?"
"Hm"?" he stops and turns to face you. "Pretty good. I can definitely believe that the king of Marconetti would send spies over here to babysit us, and Ancellotta is a fucking cesspool so the danger they pose is in no way a joke."
"I can tell that there's probably going be an argument when we get to Marconetti..." Sylvie says.
"Yeah, but I wouldn't worry about it too much," Sir Vincent says reassuringly. "The relationship between our two Kings is complicated, and I'm sure they'll both try and drag -me- into it... anyways, I'll see you four later."

now then, if this was set on a ROMAN style city planning and not medevil age city planning, then i can see everyone having clean water.
>>
>>27615005
of course it was, there was no way they could produce enough alcohol to allow everyone a drink all the time.
>>27615037
industrialzation changed everything, but i just don't see that happening in this world. magic kinda screwed that up.
>>
>>27615103
Magic pretty makes industrialization very odd indeed.
>>

>>Medieval villages and towns were built around sources of fresh water. This could be fresh running water, a spring or, in many cases, wells. All of these could easily provide fresh, disease- and impurity-free water; the idea that water from these sources would be the causes of disease and so had to be made into ale or beer is fanciful.

>>Where water was more likely to be contaminated, largely by tanning, slaughtering, or dying facilities, was in larger towns. But since medieval people were not idiots, they dealt with this in several ways. There were ordinances on where tanners and dyers could operate so that water for domestic use could be drawn from rivers and streams in the town to ensure the water was clean. And there were fines for contaminating areas of streams used for household consumption.

>>In larger cities, water-supply infrastructure was built to ensure public access to clean water. In medieval London, for example, the City Council began construction on what was called "the Great Conduit" in 1236. This was a complex of pipes that brought water from a large fresh spring at Tyburn to a pumping house with cisterns at Cheapside. This fed local cisterns all over London.

>>eople did drink a lot of ale and beer, but not because their water was so bad. The brews in question were much weaker than their modern equivalents but had the effect of providing much-needed calories to laborers and farmers, as well as being thirst-quenching and re-hydrating in hot weather or when working hard and losing sweat.

Plus, you have milk, cider/fruit juice and mead. And spring water.
>>
>>27615121
Basically magic punk

Aside: I can't help but feel a little paranoid about the spy. What if he was actually from Ancellotta, and made up his sob story about being from Marconetti when he panicked?

Hopefully Sir Gregory will have his paranoia glasses on and ask Marconetti to identify whether the kid is actually one of their spies or not...
>>
>>27615121

>>27615154
Pretty much.
I'm a bit worried about the spy too, but I trust Greg to cover us on this one.

>>27615160
Magic doesn't remove the need, at the end of the day the supply of magic is going to be outstripped by the demand for what it can produce and at that point you'll probably reach magitech industrialization.

"So Nicolette... you're a member of the royal family too?" you ask.
"Eh- where did you-" Nicolette stares at you, her face having gone pale.
"Sylvie mentioned it on the roof," you reply. "...was that supposed to be a secret?"
"Nicolette has kind of a complex about that," Sylvie explains. "She reeeeeally wants to become a knight, but she doesn't want anyone to think that it's because of nepotism so she tries to avoid letting people know about it. She's prideful like that."
"Dammit Sylvie..." Nicolette says, sighing deeply.
"It's too late to hide it now," Sylvie says, rolling her eyes. "I know, Melanie knows, and it's not fair that Reinhold's the only one who doesn't."

"I can totally understand if you don't want to talk about your past," you say.
"Fuck... whatever, I'll spill the basics," Nicolette says to you, and then turns to Sylvie. "Don't tell him anything more than I do, I don't want him acting all weird like he did when he found out that Vincent was your father."
"Yeah, yeah..." Sylvie replies.

"dammit shut up sylvie- ANYWAYS, that's that. My mother wants me to stay at home and live up the noble life, my father wants me to follow in his footsteps, but I want to do my own thing and there we go."
"She's actually following in her-"
"shut up shut up SHUT UP"

"Anyways..." you say, trying to shift the conversation, "how long have you all known each other?" you ask.
"Hm? Nicolette and I have known each other our entire lives," Sylvie replies.
"Yeah, we're pretty much like sisters," Nicolette says. "Mine, Sylvie's and Marianne's parents all had their first kids around the same time so we were pretty much raised together."
"Um, I've been working at the castle for five years now, so that's how long I've known them," Melanie joins in.

"If you say so..." Melanie replies, blushing slightly.
"Alright, I'll be right back with your food!" the waitress says cheerily as she heads to the back of the restaurant.

"Reinhold's a regular gentleman, huh," Nicolette says teasingly. "Paying for everyone's food like this and all."

"Oh Nicolette, how's your father doing? Nicolette, why are you playing with sticks instead of taking up the sword like a right proper knight? Nicolette, why don't you learn magic, I bet you'd show so much promise! Nicolette, I'd love for you to meet my son, he'd be perfect for you!" Between each sentence, Nicolette angrily tears into her sandwich.
"...damn, sorry I brought it up," you reply, dumbfounded.
"Shit... no, don't worry about it. You should be fine, I guess. Just don't punch anyone in the face that Marianne doesn't tell you to."

"Umm, I just remembered something," Sylvie says. "You didn't want to talk about your parents, right?"
"You know that I don't. Why?" nicolette asks.
"...wasn't your mother going to be cooking dinner for us tonight? Are you going to send Reinhold back to the castle before that?"

Well, yeah. As long as we don't adopt the stupid Bale voice.
>>
>>27617470
well, yes they do, narrative causality and characterization lead characters towards certain reactions no matter the media. the tomboy being embarrassed by teasing but still liking the teaser is a deeply embedded trope.
>>
>>27617510
That sort of meta is mostly for Waifu Quest.
>>
>>27617510
Or they could potentially actually dislike the teasing?
Like im not saying it's guaranteed either way, but assuming that a character will react in a predetermined way because they seem to conform to a certain archetype is sort of dumb.
Not all "tomboy" characters are written exactly the same way.
>>
>>27617534
I'm not arguing for meta use, I'm arguing with the guy saying that the same principles don't apply, personality traits mean some things are ok and some aren't, tomboys are for teasing.
>>
>>27617553
Of course not, and that's not what he's saying.

He's suggesting that the trope that Nicolette fulfills has certain demands that must be met in order to retain the benefits of the trope.

I just had a great idea for using tropes as an alternative to classes/archetypes for a P&P. Oh man.
>>
>>27617591
>Trope

You've been infected by TVTropes to see everything in "tropes". Please report to the disease control center IMMEDIATELY.

>>27617229
"Well, I can do that. No harm, no foul."
>>
"I'm going to meet your mother already? This relationship is moving so fast..." you say with a wink.

Sylvie stares at you in shock, her mouth agape.
Melanie is doing her best to keep from bursting out with laughter, you can see her shoulders heaving.
But Nicolette...

...Nicolette simply picks up a napkin, crumples it into a ball, and chucks it at you.

"God damn it you are so fucking weird what the fuck" Nicolette says, laughing hard.
"...yeah, I deserved that," you say through the napkin that's now covering your face.

After a few minutes of everyone regaining their composure, Nicolette speaks up.

"...ugh, I guess it's fine if you come along if you want," Nicolette says to you. "My mother did want to meet the guy who defended her honor against that asshole, after all."
"I'll be on my best behavior," you reply with a salute.
"What about you, Melanie? Do you want to come too?" Nicolette asks.
"wha- no- I... I couldn't..." Melanie says, trying to hide her blushing face with her hands. "I really do appreciate the offer, but I couldn't..."
"...oh," Nicolette replies, sounding disappinted. "That's alright, I didn't want to force you or anything anyways."

With your evening planning out of the way, you finish your food, pay the bill, and head out for your next stop.

"Aw shit..." Nicolette mumbles.

"It is time..." you begin, clasping your hands together.
"...for fancy dresses!" Sylvie finishes, pointing in the air.
"god damn it you two..." nicolette grumbles.

With your posing done, Sylvie grabs Nicolette's arm and pulls her along. You and Melanie follow them through several streets until you make it to the front of a store with huge picture windows, displaying the fanciest dresses you've ever seen.

"I'm only doing this because I have to..." Nicolette mutters. "Just so you know, I'm not wearing anything overly gaudy. Or with cleavage. Or the back all out. So don't even try that shit, you got that?" she says, glaring at the three of you.
"Yup!" Sylvie replies happily as she slowly drags Nicolette into the store.
"Um... I'd only ever recommend something tasteful, Miss Nicolette," Meanie says, nervously adjusting her glasses as she follows behind them.

As you follow them into the dress store, you're surrounded by more dresses than you've ever seen before in your life.

"Alright, let's find something nice!" Sylvie says as she pulls Nicolette deeper inside the store.

Browsing through the store, you figure that you might as well help out so you start looking for something that you think that Nicolette might like. Since she said that she dislikes dresses that accentuate cleavage or have open backs, you decide to look for something more tasteful...

...while you may not know what the upper classes consider "tasteful," you take the whore clothing that you were surrounded by during your early life and look for the exact opposite.

Also the slit is useful for movement. She's a combat girl and needs something less restrictive whilst still looking classy. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

Black.
It's gotta be black. Red hair plus black dress equals oh mama.

Did we ever get the color of her eyes? We should have it match up.
>>
>>27619088
I was speaking towards the idea I thought you were getting at. If that was your intention, my b.

A darker shade of blue would work. A lighter shade of green, maybe, but green isn't a great formal-wear color. I think for Nicolette we just go full stop classic and channel some Audrey Hepburn. Tightly tailored, somewhere around the knees, small heels. Wrap her hair in a bun and give her a diamond necklace and matching ear rings. Basically takes care of itself.
>>
this thread is getting too gay again.

i like it.
>>
>>27619155
hey man we're just talking about dresses and fashion....
oh
>>
>>27619131
I like what you're thinking, but instead of a bun, let's go for a loose braid. something that frames her face well. But sticking to her whole action girl vibe there should be enough places for her to hide all sorts of sharp pointy things.
>>
>>27619169
And fine looking ladies. That makes it fine. You can rest easy.
>>
>>27619169
>Implying you wouldn't do this for any girl in one of your games.
>>
>>27619155
Is it a surprise when OP throws a dress like that for Nicolette to wear at a formal party full of snootier and more melodramatic nobility? They're probably more straight-laced in fashion to keep up appearances, too.
>>
>>27619188
But I like frills.
>>
>>27619179
Oh, shit, you're right. She wears her spear-necklace-pendant-thing. We could give her a really loose necklace that floats just over her bust line so she can keep the necklace.

There's your hidden weapons, though, and it's her entire spear to boot.

I'd be willing to compromise something like a loose bun held up with questionably-too-sharp-needles. Kind of an Asian feel to it.
>>
>>27619190
I don't know man, noble fashion can go fucking weird places depending on the setting/place.

>>27619200
But I bet you like the girl to dress in a way that fits her even more.
>>
Loose braid? So basically Female Knight? (manga version, not anime version)

This might be nice... but then you spot a slinky black number that you also think might look alright on her...

Unable to choose between them, you pick up both dresses and head to where Nicolette is. Though you can't see her through the ROWS UPON ROWS of dresses, you are -quite- able to hear her arguing with Sylvie. Following the sound of her grumbling about the entire situation, you eventually make it to a clearing where you spot Nicolette, Sylvie and Melanie.

"C'mon, try this one!" Sylvie says, holding up a little black dress of a similar style to what you just picked up.
"Fuck no, just look at it! That just screams 'sexy lady' and I DO NOT want that attention, especially from -those- assholes!"
"Aww..." Sylvie sulks away, defeated.

"And what do you two want?" Nicolette turns to you and Melanie.
"I was thinking that maybe this would look nice on you, Miss Nicolette..." Melanie says, holding up a white dress.

Though you do think that the dress that Melanie picked out looks nice, you figure that you might as well show Nicolette the ones that you picked out yourself as well.

"What do you think about this one?" you ask, holding the frillier dress.
"That's... it's cute and all, but I don't think it really suits me..." Nicolette says, blushing slightly. "Besides, that's exactly the kind of thing that... nevermind," she says, shaking her head. "Melanie, that one isn't awful."
"Yeah, I think it looks really nice too," you say. "I guess my comment about you being good at making girls look like princesses was true after all!" you attempt to give Melanie a thumbs-up while holding the two dresses, but kind of fumble it.
"Th- that's not-" Melanie stammers.

"What do you think about this one, then?" you ask, holding up the slinky black dress."
"ABSOLUTELY NOT," Nicolette says flat-out. "For the exact same reasons as I was telling Sylvie."

As if she was summoned, Sylvie shows up at that exact moment, carrying a frilly red and black dress.

"H... how about this one?" she asks, out of breath.

"...yeah, that'd look pretty good on you," you say.
"Eh? Uh... I guess..." Nicolette looks at the two of you, unsure what to say. "If you think it'd look alright... sorry, Melanie."
"That's okay, I'm just happy to help!" Melanie replies, not minding at all that her suggestion didn't get picked.

With the initial selection out of the way, Sylvie drags Melanie off to the store's tailor. He takes her measurements, retakes them, alters the dress to fit her perfectly, repeats everything all over again... your mind starts to wander after a while.

When you come to, you look at your watch. It's now just before five, which means that you've wasted several hours in here... but since Nicolette's dress is the entire point of you coming out here, you don't really mind.

It is horribly boring in here though, so you silently wish that they'd hurry up already.

"Gaaah! We're finally done!" Nicolette shouts as she walks towards you while holding a dress bag. "C'mon Reinhold, we're out of here!"
"I'm sorry that it took so long, Mr. Reinhold," Melanie says with a bow.
"Heh, don't worry about it," you reply.

You then hold the door open for the girls and follow behind them. Finally back outside, you look at the sky and notice that the sun's getting rather low.

You start to ask if you could stop by the bakery to pick something up for the Princess before you leave town, but then you notice someone familiar...

Shit.

Oh SHIT.

What the hell is SHE doing out here!?

A few stores down the road, you spot the familiar visage of Citrine, one of the girls from back at the brothel that you grew up in. While she is the ONLY ONE out of the whole lot of them who you actually -didn't- hate, you still have no desire to have a teary-eyed reunion with her.

And though you spotted her, she still hasn't recognized you... it's not too late for you to pull the girls aside and take a different route before she sees you.

...though you are kind of wondering how in the hell she was actually able to make it all the way out here. And those aren't whore's clothes that she's wearing...

Honestly, I find everyone who thinks it's a good idea to try to keep our upbringing a secret is a fucking moron, because theres no way in hell the king let us near his daughter without checking us out, and everyone else Is going to find out eventually. Id rather seize the opportunity to let people know now, where we can let it drop gently and without rumors and shit, and with people we can somewhat trust. And since it's one of the very few people who we didnt hate from there, theres probably not going to be a much better chance.
tl;dr , it's goign to come up eventually, better to get it out of the way and face it, instead of scrambling about trying to avoid it like we're a fucking coward and have something to be ashamed of.

she's probably one of the few people that didn't treat us like shit back then, might as well say hi, it's not as if the whole brotel was going to jump on our ass, right?
>>
>>27622002
and of course you run straight to the extremes, which are very much out of character for Rein...

From that point of view this entire discussion since last arch's story post makes a good stand in for Reinhold's inner dialogue

>tiny angel
she's not a bad person, you owe it to her to at least say hi. And you're not looking to masquerade in front of your friends, are you?

>tiny devil
hide, quickly! you can't be seen with a whore! this will harm your social status, and what will your new friends think of you when they learn? No need to tell them *everything*!

>tiny angel
hm, he has a point about the status thing - would your friends like to be seen with a prostitute? You shouldn't calculate like that though. Appearances are nebulous, your old friends' feelings are real! She'll surely be happy for you, too, and your friends will understand.

>tiny devil
bah! think of your future! and you're not really in the mood for this now, are you? Just take the quick and easy way out.

Really? Because it seems to me he has no interest in meeting his past.

he has not gone one way or the other because it hasn't come up yet, and the very moment it does, albeit as something small and innocent, everyone is running around with their pants on their heads like they have been coated in napalm

actually it does say in OP's post that Reinhold has 'no desire' for the reunion.

I'm assuming this is the case of deciding between doing
>the easy thing
or
>the right thing

both of which could be seen as in character.

but muh plot!

We can talk to her while buying all the girls a present because we're a gentleman!
