The sun is high in the sky, and it's searing hot outside. Heat waves rise in all directions, and the very air seems to shimmer and sweat. Still, people have jobs to do. You live in a shoddy little town called Woodglenn, if “town” is the proper term for it. bordered by a vast forest on one side and a reeking swamp on another, when the wind is JUST right, which seems to be a good 80% of the time, the swamp fills the entire village/town/dump with a horrific reek. You’ll never get used to it. Suddenly, someone breaks you out of your daydream by calling to you. You remember you were supposed to be..

[]Plowing the earth with your father, who is a farmer.
[]Digging a grave, because your father is the town gravedigger.
[]Watching workers dig up some tree stumps on your land, because your father is the mayor of this dump and you're bored.

>[x] Digging a grave, because your father is the town gravedigger.

You can hear your father yelling at you from across the graveyard, telling you to get back to work. You sigh, stop leaning on your splintery, terrible shovel, and get back to digging. Woodglenn isn't a large town, by any means, but like anywhere, it gets it's fair share of deaths. Just last night, Old Man Hendrickson died, as a matter of fact, which is why you have to dig this stupid hole. You shovel more dirt out of the currently shallow grave, and pause to wipe sweat out of your eyes. As soon as your father hears your shovel stop, he shouts again, this time closer.

"Damnit, how many times do I have to tell you...?!"

You are a strapping young lad, since you've been digging graves or things that resemble graves your entire life. What is your name, and how do you respond to your father?

[]Get back to work without saying anything.
[]Complain about having to dig in the unreasonable heat.

"How many times are we gonna have this talk today, Howard? Mr. Hendrickson's not getting any better smelling in there!" Your father hooks a thumb toward the cluster of exceptionally mediocre buildings at the far end of the graveyard, which is fairly large. People don't really stop dying, after all. You groan internally, but continue shoveling dutifully without complaint, and your father walks off, mumbling to himself about having to prepare a headstone. You continue working, and the sun continues beating down on you with it's vicious rays. By the time you're nearing six feet deep, it's dusk. Unfortunately for you, most of the dirt in Woodglenn is full of clay, and digging becomes very challenging once you get past the topsoil. Suddenly, you strike something solid with your shovel. Assuming it's just another rock, or a big clump of clay, you try to pry it loose with your shovel, but the point keeps slipping off and you give yourself a splinter. You curse underneath your breath, and bend over to investigate. It's getting dark in the grave now that the sun is beginning to set, but you think you can make out some sort of wood. What do you do?

You lean your shovel up against the wall of the grave and bend over to get a closer look. Yup, it’s definitely wood of some sort, but you know for a fact there aren’t any graves in this part of the cemetery, and it’s not the right shape to be part of a coffin anyhow. You rub your filthy hands off on your even filthier pants, momentarily drying them off, and you find you can easily wrap your hands around the object. You give an experimental tug and find that it is QUITE adamant about staying put, however.

You pull and pull, grunting with exertion, and the stupid thing just doesn't seem to want to budge. You think about simply trying to bust it up with your shovel, but decide you'll give it one more for the hell of it. You ground yourself, plant your feet on either side of the thing, and give it one last.. good.. TUG!

It flies out effortlessly, as if there was never anything holding it in place at all. You stumble backwards quite rapidly, slam your head into the wall of the grave, and get dirt in your eyes. Great. Just perfect. You grumble, shake dirt off of your face/head, and wipe the dirt off of the intruding hunk of wood.

Oh, wow. It's a mask. Masks are big in your town. Everyone wears them whenever there's any sort of event. A dance, a funeral, a celebration, holidays.. You name it. Some sort of weird tradition. You're SUPPOSED to use a mask you made yourself, but you've never been good at things like that, so you've usually just borrowed one of your father's old, boring masks. But THIS.. This is something else. As you clean the dirt off of its 'face', you reveal two eyes. Two glowing, orange orbs. You blink. What? Weird. You could've sworn they were glowing a second ago. Goosebumps run up and down your arms and legs. You can't seem to break your gaze away from the mask, and your body seems to rapidly chill. You're not sure what's happening, but the mask just seems so.. mesmerizing. So well crafted, and of no design you've ever seen before. But something seems.. wrong. Things whisper in the back of your mind, but they don't say anything you can understand. You blink, and suddenly realize the sun has gone down. How long've you been standing in this stupid hole?

Stupid CAPTCHAs.

You set the mask on the lip of the grave, throw your shovel up, and climb out. You gently pick it up and hold it between your hands. It seems have the perfect weight, right in your hands.. And you must've cleaned it off better than you thought, because there's no more dirt left on it. Maybe you ought to see if it fits..? But your father yells out of the ramshackle cabin that serves as your shared living space. "Howard! Dinner! What are you still doing out there? Come in and wash up!" What do you do?

You decide to head in, but knowing that your father will probably try to take the mask from you, you decide to hide it in a rosebush near your cabin, so that you can retrieve it later. You then walk inside. Your father has a coarse apron on, and is currently stirring a pot of stew that hangs over the fireplace. He’s a huge hulk of a man, standing at least seven feet tall and with cords of muscle all over his body, a result of being born and raised from gravekeepers. He turns to you as you walk in, with a raised eyebrow.
“Where’ve you been? It shouldn’t have taken you all day to dig one grave. And you look like you’ve just seen a ghost. Something happen?”

"Oh, uh, sorry Dad. I finished up and sat down for a bit just to catch my breath, and I think I must've gotten too hot or something, because I fell asleep and didn't wake up until now."

Your dad frowns. "You should've told me, Howard. I would've finished the grave. No sense in working yourself into an early one. Though, I guess you already dug it, so it wouldn't be too inconvenient.." He grins and slaps you on the back. "There's a bucket of water out back. Go get washed up and come eat." You decide that sounds like a fine plan, considering you're absolutely filthy. Not much later, you're sparkly clean(or as close as a bucket of water can possibly get you) and wearing fresh clothes. Dinner was boring, like it usually is, and you've just finished the dishes. Your father's snoring already, having fallen asleep almost immediately. You have a great urge to go inspect that mask. It's a full moon tonight, and you can bring a candle.. It really consumes your attention, and you're curious as to whether or not it fits. What do you do?

[]Grab a candle and retrieve the mask, bring it back inside.

You sigh and decide to go to bed. You've been digging all day long, you're exhausted and sore, and you have to fill in the hole you dug tomorrow after Hendrickson's funeral. The mask is interesting, but you've got responsibilities. You'll have to investigate it tomorrow. You crawl into your bed, pull the covers over you, and close your eyes. Your thoughts linger for awhile before sleep finds you, and you find yourself thinking about Old Man Hendrickson. He was a mean, old prick. If you didn't know any better, you'd say he probably died of being so crotchety. You wonder who'll go to his funeral, and then sleep takes you.. and dreams, too.

You lift your blankets off, sit up on your bed, and look around. Your bed is sitting in what appears to be a featureless black void. You feel solid ground beneath your feet, so you stand up. In the distance, you see two glowing orange lights. Your feet begin walking toward them automatically. You want to stop. But you can't. Some horrible fascination compels you. You think you hear something shuffling in the darkness, but you can't possibly tell from where. And is that... laughter? No. Must be your imagination. It's quiet here. The orbs are closer now, and you can make out the eyes of the mask, glowing in the darkness. It floats at face-level with you, about ten feet away, simply staring. It's eyes burn, no, blaze. You stop and stare at it, and it stares into your soul. Suddenly you feel hot breath on your ear, and hear a whispering, so quiet you can barely hear it.

"..let's play good guys against bad guys.."

You whirl around, panicked, but see nothing. When you turn back toward the mask, you realize it's not just a mask. It's a figure. You squint, and it becomes lighter and lighter. You think you can make out.. the small mirror hanging up in your father's cabin. The figure wearing the mask seems terribly familiar.. and a sinking feeling rises in your gut.

The rest of your house comes into view slowly, but it's still quite dark, as if illuminated by moonlight or something. You tilt your head back and forth, and your reflection does the same. You walk closer to it, carried by feet no longer under your control. You raise a hand up to the mirror, and realize it's coated in blood. You don't remember hurting yourself.. maybe you-

"Are you a good guy, Howard? Or are you a bad guy?" calls a voice to your left. You can't see anything but darkness when you turn that way, but in the mirror.. you make out your father's face, just in your peripheral vision. His eyes are missing, only bloody, empty sockets where they were. You open your mouth to scream, but only a hideous, echoing laughter issues forth.

You wake up with a start, drenched in cold sweat. Your father is tying up his boot laces on his bed across the cabin. "Bad dream, Howard? It happens. Seems like no matter how many times you have to do this, you never REALLY get used to it. That's okay. I'm sure Mr. Hendrickson will appreciate it. Come out when you're ready and help me prepare the grave for burial."

You wrap the mask up in an extra blanket you've got underneath your bed for the colder months and stash it good. You figure there's no way your father'd think to look there. You aren't even sure why you're hiding it, but something in your gut tells you that nobody should find it. It's yours, after all. You did all that work digging it up. Why shouldn't you hide it? You shake your head to clear your thoughts, and head outside.

It's still fairly dark out, the sun just beginning to rise, but the moon is still bright and shining in the sky. You begin helping your father finish preparing the headstone, making the grave more attractive, and various things like that. Finally, after hours of work, he has a new request of you. "Would you go into the woods and pick some wildflowers, Howard? I have a feeling Mr. Hendrickson won't be getting many flowers today. He didn't have any family. It's poor luck to bury a body without offering flowers." You agree, and he busies himself with final touches. You head back to the cabin to grab a small pruning knife, and realize you could probably take the mask with you now, if you wanted. It's a bit of a hike up to the clearing where most wildflowers grow, so you'll have an excuse to be gone for awhile. What do you do?

>[x]TAKE MASK

You decide that since you're already there anyhow, you might as well take the mask with you. You slip it into your gunny sack along with some jerky and a canteen full of water, and head out of the graveyard and into Woodglenn proper. People are out and about, sweeping shop fronts and bartering over fruit stalls and running errands. Things you'd expect from a moderately sized town like this. You catch a few glances from people as you walk, carrying your sack. The adults tend to completely ignore you, but the kids around your age tend to give you dirty looks. Nobody wants to hang out with the kid who buries dead folks all the time. You grumble, and grumble, and are in the process of grumbling when you're suddenly caught off guard by Marcy smiling at you, leaning out of a store window. Marcy's parents own the local general store, and she's always been nice to you. "Good morning, Howard! Where are you going? Not helping your father today?"

You shrug. "We're mostly done. He's sent me to go get flowers, though, so I'm going for a walk."She nods at you. "Yeah. I'm sure there won't be too many flowers for him today. Well, I've got to get back to work, but maybe next time I'll go on a walk with you, okay? Bye!"

And she darts back inside. You shrug, wondering what all that's about, and carry on your merry way. Soon enough, you're at the edge of town, wandering into the woods. You remove the mask from your sack when you're sure nobody is around, and inspect it in full daylight. It's quite old, that much is clear, yet it's not rotten at all despite being buried for who knows how long. The wood feels quite sturdy. In fact, you've never seen any wood like this before. You raise the mask up to your face. Looks like it should fit perfectly. You slowly move it toward yourself, but you hesitate. Didn't you have a dream like this last night...? What do you do?

[]Put the mask on. Dreams are dreams, and it's unique.
[]Don't put it on. Something's odd..

Focus. You came here for flowers. Gotta focus on the flowers.. the flower.. flowing designs all over the mask. It's beautiful. Who needs flowers when you've got this? Maybe just for a second, you could.. No. You're not here for fun, you're here to.. why are you here again? All you can think about is how nicely that mask'd fit on your face.. Patterns of it whirl around inside your head.

You remember your dream, and shudder. You've heard of things like possession before. Poes and nasty things like that forcing people to do things they don't want to do. No, thank you. You burst the swirling patterns of the mask that swarm through your head with a surge of willpower and carry on. You've got a job to do. You need flowers. Heck, you're even going to pick one or two for Marcy. You so rarely get time to yourself, you might not get a chance again for awhile.

>+50 XP
>50/100 XP

You nod to yourself and chew on some jerky, feeling much better. Soon enough, you hit a small creek and locate a much more faded, less often traveled path. You take it, and shortly, you're at a fairly large clearing surrounded by tiny waterfalls and filled with all sorts of wildflowers. You begin picking them, and soon enough have a bag full. Across the clearing, you see a rosebush with a single, beautiful pink rose growing on it. That might do nicely for Marcy. What do you do?

You decide that rose would make a fantastic gift for Marcy. You walk over to the bush, gently slice the flower at the stem with your pruning knife, and hold it up in the air as a tone plays- no, you just enjoy it's fragrance. Something rustles behind you, and you turn to find a very peculiar man in even stranger dress.

"Hohoho. You have quite an eye for flowers. And other things, too, I think. You've found something terrible, haven't you?" He speaks in a very quiet manner, yet it seems to demand your complete attention. He's got a massive pack full of various masks on his back, and his eyes are closed, as far as you can tell. He's wearing a massive grin, exposing even white teeth. You're a little taken aback, and a little irritated at being surprised. "Hey, what? Who are you? What are you doing way out here?"

"Hohoho. I'm a simple mask salesman. I travel around the world, but it's not masks people buy from me. It's happiness. But there's something you have that isn't happy at all. Something I believe belongs to me. Do you have anything like that?" He grins at you and clasps his hands together. What do you do?

"I found something.. kind of like that. I'm not sure it's necessarily yours, though, considering I found it buried in the ground." You eye him warily, and reach down to your gunny sack, producing the mask from within. He straightens up as you pull it out, and peers at you, still grinning that same grin. "Hohoho. Yes, yes! That's it. That's my precious mask. I've been searching for it for quite a long time, you see. Quite a long time indeed. I had a feeling it might turn up here, and I happened to be passing by.. Now, if you'd be so kind as to return it to me..?" He clasps his hands out toward you as if pleading, but his rictus grin stays the same. You feel the mask brushing up against your consciousness, but this time it's not trying to influence you. You hear a whispering inside your head.

"...he's a bad guy. You and me are good guys. If you give me up, the bad guys win. You don't want to lose, do you..?"

"Look, is there anything you can tell me about this mask? How do you know this is yours? It seems insane. I mean, did you bury this? Do you even know where I dug it up from? How did this possibly happen?" You can't tell if the guy is trying to work you over, or is confused, but you just can't see how this belongs to him. He grins at you, of course.

"Hohohoho. That precious mask.. There is no other mask like it in all the world. It is an ancient mask of great power. It was stolen from me quite a long time ago, but I knew I'd get it back. All it would take is a kind young man who wants to bring more happiness to the world. You can be that young man, can't you? Please, give me that mask. Hohoho." He moves a few steps closer to you, still grinning like a loon and holding his hands out to you. You take a step back, and his face immediately becomes a furious scowl, though he's still grinning. The result is horrifying. "You must give me that mask! You must! If you don't, something terrible will surely happen to you!" And like lightning, his composure returns and he stands up straight, hands clasped in what appears to be humility. "Please. You must believe. Believe in a world full of happiness.." What do you do?

How can I tell it's really yours? And is there at least a reward? I do need a mask, after all, and you seem to have a good selection." The man grins some more and laughs in response.

"It's certainly mine. You'll just have to trust your heart.. and believe. Good deeds should be done without expecting a reward, young man! True happiness can't be brought to this world unless people understand that. Please, understand.." He suddenly looks quite frantic. "Oh, no! Something terrible is coming. I warned you, young man. [x]Consult the mask. It's been more talkative since you won a mental struggle with it.

You think on it, and you can definitely feel some sort of link between you and the mask. You think it's because you're touching it. You wonder how you're going to ask it anything, when it responds.

"I told you. He's a bad guy. We're playing bad guys against good guys. The ones coming are neither good guys or bad guys. They are small. Weak. They want to interfere with our game. Let me destroy them." It impresses upon you the image of you putting the mask on, naturally. You're hesitant; this is not an ordinary mask, as you've obviously discovered by now. But you feel confident that you could prevent it from making you do anything you don't want to do.. It certainly feels powerful. You hear rustling in the woods nearby, and it becomes noticeably darker, even though the sun is still out. Several things cackle madly, and you think you see points of light floating around, flitting between trees. What do you do?

[x]Put on the mask and exert your gathered willpower to stay in control.

Suddenly, three poes burst from the treeline. You've never seen a poe before, but you've been told stories about them since you were a child. A popular story around Woodglenn is that your father once fought and defeated a rather large poe using his shovel in order to exorcise the graveyard. Two of these poes are small, but the one in the center is rather large and menacing. They waste no time speaking to you, though you've heard they can talk, and immediately fly toward you and the Salesman, who dashes for cover behind a fallen log at inhuman speeds. Mid-flight, the poes become invisible, vanishing from site.

You know what you must do. You put on the mask. Power floods your young body, and your vision pierces through even the darkest shadows. You can even see the poes, still flying toward you with lanterns flailing. With an errant thought, you point both of your arms outwards. BOOM. Giant barbed tentacles lance from them, impaling the two smaller poes and shattering their lanterns, immediately snuffing them out. The larger one slows, and begins reversing, perhaps thinking to escape your WRATH, but there is no hope. With nothing but an errant thought, a concentrated beam of heat blasts forth from the mask, searing the poe and leaving it wounded. It stops trying to retreat and stares you down, instead. "Give me the mask, dark one, and I shall leave you with your life! Eeh hee hee!"

You laugh right back. What a funny offer. You consider all the wonderful hexes and spells you have to offer, but feel that the willpower you amassed earlier is about halfway expended. You'd better decide what to do quick...
