She nods, continuing to lead you to the captain's office. It's the first time you've actually been in here- you'd think you'd have remembered how nice it was. Ice and Slider, both chatting with the captain, look up when you and Merlin walk in- the hatch was open.

“Lieutenant commander Bishop. Glad to see our prodigal son has returned.” The captain says, a trace of humor on her voice.

“What about the inside of the... what was it? Lazarus? Building.” Captain Blackwell asks.

“Hospital.” You say, looking at her. “Only difference was the observation deck overlooking the operating rooms. Watched them rebuild a German witch with a pretty heavy set of prosthetic. Better part of half of her upper body, I guess.”

Ice winces. “What happened to her?”

You shrug. “Not sure, they didn't say and I didn't ask. Said she got careless over Seelow, and that she was lucky there was a Putin-loyal healwitch there to stabilize her. I didn't get a chance to talk to her, though.”

“Must have been a SAM hit.” Ice says, quietly. “That-” She shakes her head. “Sorry, I got off track. But she said she was German? That seems odd, the Soviets have never gotten along well with the Germans, especially after that whole Barbarossa thing.”

You nod. “Putin believes Stalin and maybe the rest of the politburo is working with the Martians, setting up for a second invasion.”

“What?” Ice and the captain both exclaim- and you feel Merlin look up at you.

You shrug. “Putin said as much. Said Uncle Joe hadn't been the same since the war, and that a lot of things made no sense. Talked about it some with Konstantina too and-”

“Wait a second, Frank. Konstantina? That headcase with the fixation with you?” Ice asks.

You nod. “The same. She's working with Putin, apparently. Anyway, she talked some about how the high command is acting strangely- units and supplies are held back, sent to open new fronts that serve no purpose-”

“Like Alaska?” Ice asks.

You nod again. “Yeah, I think so. Or Japan, all they did by dragging the Japanese into it was extend the meat grinder.”

Ice and the captain look at each other.

“The Matrons need to know.” Ice says, simply. “If it's true, the Russian witches would be his next target, and- “

“And a lot of them are working with Putin.” You say. “He said his big worry now is a push on Berlin and action against Megalith.”

“Megalith? They'd go after that? They're crazy!” Ice says, snapping her head around to look at you again.

You shrug. “They'd only have to hold it long enough to disable those missiles.”

“Or launch them against whatever targets he wants.” The captain says. “That's one of those not so well kept secrets- the missiles can be targeted against land and sea as well, it's not that hard to set it up. They built them that way so we could remove anything that got through the the EDF's superweapons.”

“Has he taken any action to protect it?” Captain Blackwell asks.

You shrug. “I think he said he was moving troops, but he doesn't want to go overt yet. It should be in the intel packet I gave the spooks.”

Captain blackwell looks past you and nods- and you're bumped hard, from behind, as Slider strolls past, trying to look innocent and failing miserably. Katya does a pretty poor job hiding her grin.

“Mail?” She asks, taking the bag and opening it. “From- oh, Balalaika! I had wondered what happened to her after I-” She shakes her head. “She was in good health?”

You nod. “She was there at the base and- wait, Balalaika? Petrov said her name was Sofiya.”

Katya nods and smiles. “Sofiya Pavlovena. She is a healwitch, but you would probably never guess it.”
She laughs lightly. “She was our commander in Afghanistan, and coordinated heavily with the VDV and Spetsnaz groups there. It is what helped us all get through as well as we did.”

“Well, I'm glad the trip was worth something then.” You say with a grin.

“Well, commander Bishop.” Captain Blackwell says as Katya sits heavily on the sofa in front of her desk and tears open the letter. “I think that's it for now, unless you have something else to add?”

You shake your head. “Nothing else, ma'am. Most of the rest of it should be covered by the intel guys when they report to you.”

She laughs. “Commander, they don't report to me at all. If I'm lucky, they'll forward me a copy of whatever they've found out, otherwise it'll just go to Virginia and DC, then back down to us as orders later. Anyway, go get yourself some chow and rack time, I believe you have the night patrol.”

You frown at that, earning you a light elbow in the ribs from Merlin. “Aye, Ma'am.” you respond, turning to leave.

“Frank, that means you've got crew rest in a couple of hours. If I get back to quarters and you aren't there...” Ice says.

“Understaood, ma'am.” You say, trying not to laugh.

“Where are we going now?” Merlin asks as you step out into the passageway.
