So, news.

Work continues at a steady pace for the side project, so that's good. Still not sure if I want to run it as a short quest or stick it up on pastebin or something as a story. Some of the first gen guys that did the initial crop of spin off material are talking about coming back to writing, so that's good, at least in my opinion. I liked working with the majority of those guys.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989
and here: https://archive.foolz.us/tg/search/subject/Strikers%20%2789%20Quest/

And there's the pastebin primer here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1 which works pretty well as a jumping in point, though you may still end up having to ask questions- if you do, either one of the guys or myself will handle them, no problem!

++

Sometimes, you can't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, Merlin is more into the whole fighter jet thing than you are. Somehow, she managed to get her witch's skirt on. You, having already made her blush once today, didn't comment- it's unusual in the extreme for her to wear that kind of thing, she usually seems to prefer the full flight suit of normal aircrew. This, of course, strained your admittedly limited knowledge of how witches work with strikers- you were almost positive there had to be skin contact to effect magic or something.

To be honest, you weren't entirely sure and didn't really care- for a long time, it was just a convent excuse to see some very nice looking legs and maybe a panty shot or two. Of course, that's since changed- You've had to restrain yourself more than once when you caught someone doing the exact same thing.

1/2
>>
You chuckle to yourself, thinking about it. When did you become the big brother? Ok, maybe with Merlin it was a given, but Ice? Christ, you were about to cave some engineer's mate's head in a few days before you left just because you thought he was trying to ogle her as the two of you headed down to the hangar deck. You didn't- of course- and like to think that you didn't even let off an overt air of what you were thinking, but you're not sure.

You're interrupted before you can really get going by Merlin, who tugs you off your autopilot track and over to a stairwell.

“C-captain Blackwell wanted to see you after the ONI people were done talking to you.” She says, tugging you by the wrist. “Ice and Slider should be up there already.”

“What about?” You ask, slowing down slightly.

Merlin looks back at you. “I-I don't know.” She says. “It didn't sound bad, but....”

“But you never know, right.” You finish for her.

She nods, continuing to lead you to the captain's office. It's the first time you've actually been in here- you'd think you'd have remembered how nice it was. Ice and Slider, both chatting with the captain, look up when you and Merlin walk in- the hatch was open.

“Lieutenant commander Bishop. Glad to see our prodigal son has returned.” The captain says, a trace of humor on her voice.

Home sweet home. Now off into a tangent.

With the various SWQ characters’ kids/grand-kids that have shown up we’re missing one important one, Sean’s. I think I have, after a reading the pastebin and going back to various threads (mainly just to remember if anything was said), figured out who it is. We’re looking at the wrong gender; its Kenji, Merlin’s boyfriend isn't it? Feel like it would be the only reason 8-Bit would tease us about the kid’s last name. If not you've duped me, congrats. Best Night of the Week!

You nod. “It's good to be home, ma'am.”

She grins, slightly. “Miss your people, did you?”

You look down at Merlin. “Of course.”

Captain Blackwell chuckles at that. “Well, I'm assuming the naval intelligence people already talked to you. We-” She indicates herself and Ice “- Were more interested in how the witches there acted and were treated. The Soviets don't exactly have the best history with witches, and the Soviet community is too heavily monitored these days for the traditional lines of communication to work.”

Ice nods. “Katya doesn't exactly paint the best picture for us, either.” She says. “And we're anxious to find out if their archives are still available.”

Slider looks at Ice, then over at you. “Oh, and the Twins brought your cousin aboard.”

[x] “Well, I do have a packet from someone for Katya, maybe we should call her up here and ask?”

You shrug, trying to put Joe out of your head. How the hell have they kept that hidden from you for the past however long? Maybe they brought him aboard when you were in Russia- you were only gone a couple of days, but that's enough time, you think. Airlift into iceland, then a chopper to the fleet? You'll have to talk with them later.

“Well,” You say, pulling out the satchel of letters from Katya's friend- what was her name? Sofiya? Something like that, you think- Petrov told you, you just can't remember. “I got this from one of them to give to Katya, maybe we should call her up here?”

Ice looks dubiously at you. “Did you get those cleared by the intel guys?” She asks, then shakes her head. “And either way, it's not like we can expect a whole lot out of her private mail if that's what that is.”

Captain Blackwell, on the other hand, looks thoughtful. “Did she say who all they were from?”

You shake your head. “No ma'am. I'd assumed it was friends and former squadron mates. No idea, though.”

She nods, then looks over at Slider. “Lieutenant Kerner...?”

Slider sighs, and nods. “Just when I was getting comfortable. Aye, Ma'am.” As she brushes past you, she says something to Merlin you don't quite catch- but you do see Merlin smile and nod.

“So, Commander Bishop, is there anything you think we need to know?” The captain asks. “Purely off the record- I'm sure there's going to be an intel document on my desk in a few hours anyway.”

Dunno, but there's a fuckton of more important things people should be worrying about other than the offer to go post-human warrior.

They'll be overwhelmed enough about Stalin without relatively insignificant information like that cluttering things up. We're the ones ultimately responsible for our health anyway, not her.

We told them about the witch augments in the intel brief, so why shouldn't we mention they offered us the same.

It doesn't make us any more or less special than fronk already is. It was just an offer that we declined. We should tell the captain and the rest and see what they think, obviously the final decision to get the augments or not still lies with fronk, but not mentioning it is just stupid.

All of the above. Everything is relevant.

We did decline the offer at the time with the provision that we'll be back if we think about it and decide to do it.

You know, with all the waifuing going on in this quest, I'm surprised there hasn't been any actual romance yet.

[x] “The base itself was a lot nicer than I expected, the buildings didn't seem military at all.”
[x] “They think Stalin's working with Martians.”

“Well,” You start with a bit of a shrug. “The base itself was a lot nicer than I expected. Nicer than some stateside bases. Most of the housing I saw didn't seem military at all. More like a resort hotel or something. There was plenty of military activity there, but the base made it seem out of place.”

“What about the inside of the... what was it? Lazarus? Building.” Captain Blackwell asks.

“Hospital.” You say, looking at her. “Only difference was the observation deck overlooking the operating rooms. Watched them rebuild a German witch with a pretty heavy set of prosthetic. Better part of half of her upper body, I guess.”

Ice winces. “What happened to her?”

You shrug. “Not sure, they didn't say and I didn't ask. Said she got careless over Seelow, and that she was lucky there was a Putin-loyal healwitch there to stabilize her. I didn't get a chance to talk to her, though.”

“Must have been a SAM hit.” Ice says, quietly. “That-” She shakes her head. “Sorry, I got off track. But she said she was German? That seems odd, the Soviets have never gotten along well with the Germans, especially after that whole Barbarossa thing.”

You nod. “Putin believes Stalin and maybe the rest of the politburo is working with the Martians, setting up for a second invasion.”

“What?” Ice and the captain both exclaim- and you feel Merlin look up at you.

You shrug. “Putin said as much. Said Uncle Joe hadn't been the same since the war, and that a lot of things made no sense. Talked about it some with Konstantina too and-”

1/2
>>
“Wait a second, Frank. Konstantina? That headcase with the fixation with you?” Ice asks.

You nod. “The same. She's working with Putin, apparently. Anyway, she talked some about how the high command is acting strangely- units and supplies are held back, sent to open new fronts that serve no purpose-”

“Like Alaska?” Ice asks.

You nod again. “Yeah, I think so. Or Japan, all they did by dragging the Japanese into it was extend the meat grinder.”

Ice and the captain look at each other.

“The Matrons need to know.” Ice says, simply. “If it's true, the Russian witches would be his next target, and- “

“And a lot of them are working with Putin.” You say. “He said his big worry now is a push on Berlin and action against Megalith.”

“Megalith? They'd go after that? They're crazy!” Ice says, snapping her head around to look at you again.

You shrug. “They'd only have to hold it long enough to disable those missiles.”

“Or launch them against whatever targets he wants.” The captain says. “That's one of those not so well kept secrets- the missiles can be targeted against land and sea as well, it's not that hard to set it up. They built them that way so we could remove anything that got through the the EDF's superweapons.”

“Has he taken any action to protect it?” Captain Blackwell asks.

You shrug. “I think he said he was moving troops, but he doesn't want to go overt yet. It should be in the intel packet I gave the spooks.”

Captain blackwell looks past you and nods- and you're bumped hard, from behind, as Slider strolls past, trying to look innocent and failing miserably. Katya does a pretty poor job hiding her grin.

Oh, this talk of grandparents has reminded me.

Katya is in her twenties, let's say 22? It's 1990, so if she's 22, she would've been born in 1968. Let's say her mother was 20 at the time, she would've been born in 1948. Sanya would've been 20 in 1948. So Sanya and her daughter had kids when they were (compared to modern standards) kinda young.

Oh and Sanya is only 62.

Because I honestly think they would make for some pretty interesting villains. And their invasion method (a wormhole) would pretty much bypass most of the EDF's orbital defenses.

[x] Hey Katya, I have some mail for you.

You make a mental note to get Slider back for that, later, though you're not sure how. Maybe throwing a duck in with her when she showers next? You'll have to find a duck.

“Hey, Katya. I've got some mail here for you.” You say, trying to judge her reaction. She seems happy to see you, sure, but... guarded. Like she's not real sure what she should be feeling.

“Mail?” She asks, taking the bag and opening it. “From- oh, Balalaika! I had wondered what happened to her after I-” She shakes her head. “She was in good health?”

You nod. “She was there at the base and- wait, Balalaika? Petrov said her name was Sofiya.”

Katya nods and smiles. “Sofiya Pavlovena. She is a healwitch, but you would probably never guess it.”
She laughs lightly. “She was our commander in Afghanistan, and coordinated heavily with the VDV and Spetsnaz groups there. It is what helped us all get through as well as we did.”

“Well, I'm glad the trip was worth something then.” You say with a grin.

1/2
>>
“It was still foolish. Do not think just because you've-” She stops leafing through the stack.

“Katya?” You ask, worried.

“My grandmother wrote me.” She says. “I-I do not understand how she was able to- but...”

“Well, commander Bishop.” Captain Blackwell says as Katya sits heavily on the sofa in front of her desk and tears open the letter. “I think that's it for now, unless you have something else to add?”

You shake your head. “Nothing else, ma'am. Most of the rest of it should be covered by the intel guys when they report to you.”

She laughs. “Commander, they don't report to me at all. If I'm lucky, they'll forward me a copy of whatever they've found out, otherwise it'll just go to Virginia and DC, then back down to us as orders later. Anyway, go get yourself some chow and rack time, I believe you have the night patrol.”

You frown at that, earning you a light elbow in the ribs from Merlin. “Aye, Ma'am.” you respond, turning to leave.

“Frank, that means you've got crew rest in a couple of hours. If I get back to quarters and you aren't there...” Ice says.

“Understaood, ma'am.” You say, trying not to laugh.

“Where are we going now?” Merlin asks as you step out into the passageway.

Nah, it was really collaborative. None of the other active authors were real keen on the idea of more crossovers, and I'm ambivalent at best. they *might* pop up in stuff like noncanonical one shots or whatever but for the most part most the ones we have are going to be either easy to work in or very limited- stuff like names and personalities or whatever.

that said, if we meet a Roy Fokker, for god's sake, keep him the fuck away from pineapple salad.

"...Is he speaking?"

"No ma'am."

*SNAP*

*Scream*

"I still have enough magic to go through this routine for a couple more hours. I'll drag this out as long as you want it to."

Whatever we do, we cannot afford to break Katya's heart.

Or she will disapprove.

Not very high. Sanya isn't a healwitch.
>>
>>27767524
I would think heal witches would be trained by other heal witches.
>>
>>27767560
For general training, I meant.

But Katya isn'ta healwitch, is she?
>>

General combat.

And Katya did serve under Balalaika in Asscrackistan, which pretty much automatically makes her a member of the crew.

Theoretically could a heal witch forcibly overheal someone and give them cancer or a tumor?
>>
>>27767573
Sanya was pure aviation and propaganda poster child. Not who i would expect to mentor/train a witch VDV badass.
>>
>>27767649

Cancer doesn't work like that anon.
>>
>>27767649
I don't think Strike Witches would let that happen.

I don't think any of us expected her to pop a kid at ~20, either. She's had forty-odd years to shake thing sup.

lol i dunno. It depends on how you interpret the heal witch powers.

If it goes by DnD rules then yes, but it takes a lot of positive energy, like, trapped on the Plane of Positive Energy amounts.
