You’re standing over the bodies of two men. Their blood is warm and sticky on your hands and face. Blood still leaks out of their necks as they take their final breaths. A woman named Mariah, your neighbor, is standing next to you. She’s talking, but you can’t hear what she’s saying. All you can hear is the pounding of your own heart and the ringing in your head.

You shot a man earlier this morning. Now, two more are dead at your hand. They would’ve killed you. You had to defend yourself. But as you watch the life fade from the man’s eyes you can’t help but feel disgusted with yourself. Mariah grabs your arm and turns you to face her.

“Rodger?!” She looks worried.

“We need to leave,” you say curtly.
“Are you okay? Rodger, there’s blood—” Mariah starts, but you interrupt her.
“I’m fine. You?”
She nods.

You head back into the darkness of the store, retrieve your backpack and the Ruger .22. You notice your hands are shaking. You try and wipe some of the blood off on your shirt, but it doesn’t seem to want to leave your hands. You feel sick.

Mariah has followed you back and has her flashlight on. Without saying anything she starts rummaging through some of the rubbish on the floor. You hear bullets rolling along the tile.

“We don’t have time for this.” Your voice nearly cracks, hopefully Mariah didn’t hear.
“These guns aren’t going to do us any good without ammo.” She sounds like she’s about to cry. She works diligently for a few more moments, collecting several single bullets in her hand from the floor before grabbing a small box and tossing them in.
“There’s some .38 and .22 in there,” She says offering you the box. Even in the dim light of her cell phone, you can see there are tears in her eyes.
You take the box from her, your eyes reluctantly scanning over your red hands.
“Special and long rifle right?” You say quietly.
“Yeah. Should be.”
“Let’s go.” You throw the box into your backpack and make you’re way to the front of the store.

It might be, its been raining heavily for a while.
>>
Back out in the rain, your clothes get soaked through all over again. A trail of red follows you as you make your way to the car. You’d rather be wet than covered in the horrible stuff. You take a moment to rinse yourself in the puddles.

The car starts and you take off towards Wick Park. There’s nothing but the roar of the rain while you drive. Mariah grabs your backpack and retrieves the little ammo box to begin counting the bullets. Eventually she finishes counting.
“12 of the .22, 8 of the .38 special,” she reports.
You nod silently.

You can’t get the images of what just happened out of your mind. You keep reliving how it felt as the blood washed over your hand. The way you could feel the meat rip against the blade of the knife. The car suddenly seems so tiny, like a cage. Mariah seems to notice and lays a hand on your shoulder.

“I’m sorry I wasn't there. I was scared,” She says softly. A tear rolls down her cheek.

You feel anger rising inside you at that. She was scared? SHE was scared? You grind your teeth behind a tight-lipped expression, but say nothing.

The park is close, but its so hard to see through the rain’s all-out assault on your windshield. You slow as you approach the surrounding street. There’s a number of cars parked in the middle of the street, so you can’t get too close. The park is full of trees with a central clubhouse and a few tennis courts on the opposite side. One of those big light-up signs that they use for construction reads ‘RELIEF CAMP.’

As you pull closer you can see people moving around in the park. There are a few large white tents set up, but what really catches your attention are all the bodies. There are dozens of them scattered around the park, some are piled by one of the white tents.

You could jump the curb and drive up closer to investigate, but otherwise the road is blocked.

Something is very wrong here. These bodies weren’t taken by whatever happened yesterday.

“We need to leave. Right now.” You can see Mariah having the same revelation and nodding her head. She puts her hand over her mouth as she starts to cry.
“Dan…”
“We don’t know that they were here, but we have to get the fuck outta here. This isn’t right.”

You hear a shot ring out. Then another. And another. You throw the car into reverse and start to back up as you hear a heavy THUNK up front. You turn the wheel hard and in the rain, the car fishtails. Mariah screams, but you right the car and take off down the first street you see. You hear dozens of shots being fired and see the cars and asphalt surrounding you taking hits. There’s another thud near the back of the car before the back window explodes into a thousand tiny pieces. Mariah shrieks. You can hear outside better with the window gone. You can hear shouting, gunfire, the sound of the bullets making contact with the brick buildings around you. You hear an engine.

A frantic glance in the rear view shows an SUV coming up behind you.
“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God…” Mariah is curled into a ball in the passenger seat.

You pull the revolver out of your jacket and toss it to Mariah.
“Reload that and keep low.”

You take a sharp right and floor the gas. You swerve around the wrecked cars, deceased drivers still buckled into their seats. The SUV nearly loses control of its rear end, but corrects itself and launches forward. More gunshots rip through the roar of the rain.

Mariah clicks the cylinder into place and offers the gun back to you.

The SUV is gaining. You make another sharp turn to the left, bumping into a parked car. Metal screams as you press the gas. The SUV rounds the corner with more grace. You lost a lot of your lead. You hear another shot hit the back of the car.

“Can you shoot?” You shout over the gunfire and rain.
“Yeah.” She looks terrified.
“Shoot!” You swerve hard to dodge a body in the road.
Three loud blasts ring out, you see the SUV lurch to the left behind you through the rearview mirror. Its tires slip and it smacks into a car with a loud bang. You watch as it nearly does a 180 in the street.
“Rodger!” Mariah cries out.
You look forward again, but too late. The left side of your hatchback smacks into the tail end of a pickup. Your airbag deploys. It feels like getting punched in the head. You feel the car spin and then come to a halt. Your head is spinning, your ears ringing.

Fuck, that was stupid.

Mariah shakes her head and looks at you.
“Okay?”
“Yeah, you?” She nods. “Out.” You grab your backpack and open the door. The SUV is backing up, trying to right itself in the road. You run around to Mariah’s side of the car and help her out. Your car looks totaled. The front left side is folded up like an accordion, what’s left of the grill dangles off the front.

You take a quick scan of the surrounding buildings and head for a nearby bookstore. The SUV roars in the distance as you run through the broken glass doors of the store.

There’s no power in the store, but the large skylight in the center lets in a small amount of pale gray light.

I see. I didn't know if there had been something in the biblical vein done already. I wanted to do an apocalypse quest, but not be another zombie story. I think the Rapture is a little more interesting and has some cool room for interpretation.

>Try and set up a hasty ambush (You have your knife and aluminum bat, Mariah has the revolver)

Take cover behind some bookcases and wait it out, let mariah have the revolver and gear up with the bat and knife. Have Mariah set up deeper in the back of the store while we hide closer to the front, that way if they come in she can open fire and then we can come around behind them while they are focused elsewhere
>>
You head to the back of the store as the SUV screeches to a stop outside. There’s a door to the backroom. Your wet shoes slide to a stop once you’re through the door. You pull out your bat and put your back against the wall.
“Reload that as fast as you can and get behind something. Shoot when I say.” You fling the rain water off your hands and get a good grip on the bat. There’s a crash out front. You take a deep breath in. You hear voices. Two…maybe three.

Mariah is crouched behind a waist high shelf of books. She nods at you and aims the gun at the door.

The men are moving through the building fast. That was reckless of them.

The first pushes through the door and is met with your bat smashing into his face. There’s a loud crack followed by the metal ‘ping’ of the bat. The man’s shotgun clatters to the floor as he falls backwards.
“Fuck!” Shouts a man behind the door. You lean back from the door and yell as loud as you can:
“SHOOT!”
Mariah empties the revolver with six blaring shots. Then she disappears behind the shelf.

Another deep breath as you tighten your grip. You plow through the door, bat raised and ready. You see the man you hit lying on the ground breathing raggedly. A second man is on the ground in a growing puddle of blood with a pair of holes in his chest and stomach. He’s desperately trying to stop the bleeding. Finally to your left, there’s a man pressed against the wall. He’s grasping at a wound by his waist and holding a hatchet. He looks to you with panicked eyes.

Your swing is fast and powerful. You feel the bat connect with the man’s head. You hit him right at his jaw line with a sickening crack. He falls over to the ground, leaving an arc of blood on the wall as he slides.

You cross the hall to the other gutshot man. He looks up at you with spiteful eyes. You send the bat down on his head as hard as you can. His arms fall limply on the floor. The first guy you hit is sputtering through the blood that’s collecting in the crater that was once his face.
You pick up his shotgun and check his pockets. Two more shells. You go the next man. It looks like you might’ve broken his neck and his jaw when you hit him. He doesn’t have anything on him but the hatchet. Lastly, the man you just killed. There’s a pistol on the floor next to him. He’s got two empty magazines in his pocket.

You head back into the back room and check on Mariah. She’s on the ground in the fetal position sobbing uncontrollably. You kneel down and put your hand on her shoulder. She’s crying so hard that there’s no noise, just a silent look of anguish on her face.

You sit there in silence for a little while. You count out the ammo you collected from the dead men in the hallway: six 12 gauge shotgun shells and seven 9mm pistol rounds. You reload the weapons and take a seat next to the shelves with the shotgun pointed at the door. Mariah eventually stops crying. The man in the hallway eventually stops choking on his blood and dies. Then, there’s nothing but the roar of the rain on the roof.
>>
You never thought this is how you would be. You remember watching The Walking Dead and World War Z and you always told yourself you’d be a good guy. You’d try to help people. And yet, here you sit on the second day of the new world with six deaths to your name.

Was the man back at Dicks right? Did we cause this? Is this really the end? God’s justice?

The Rapture.

You were never a religious man. You gave up on God after he took your Father with a heart attack. You prayed then for your Mom. But Not eve, but not even six months later her doctor told her she had pancreatic cancer. You prayed even harder then, begged even.

But it wasn’t enough. Less than a year later, she died.

You decided you didn’t need God the moment you saw the life fade from your mother’s eyes.

Mariah sits up and wipes the tears from her eyes. Her face is puffy and her eyes are red. She puts the revolver down next to you and clears her throat.
“Should…should we go?” She asks.
“Soon,” you reply, never taking your eyes off the swinging door.

Where are you going next?

You stand and help Mariah to her feet. She carries the Ruger and revolver; you take the bat, shotgun, and pistol. There’s a small grocery store across the street. A lot of the roof is caved in but you’re able to get inside and pick out some canned fruit, beans, rice, and cooking oil. Mariah suggests grabbing some toilet paper. You don’t dare venture too far into the building, the roof looks pretty unstable. You grab a case of bottled water and a cart and pile everything in.

You need to find a working car.

You consider trying the SUV down the road, but you wouldn’t want someone to recognize. Better go with one from the… raptured? Taken? Whatever they were, you didn’t have a name for them and they didn’t have a use for their cars anymore.

You find a Sentra that’s in pretty good shape. You were hoping for something a little beefier, but most people seemed to have been moving when they died, which left most of the cars ruined. You gingerly remove the corpse from the front seat. She was just a girl; probably a student judging by the YSU hoodie. You lay her face up in the street, her pale eyes staring up into the sky. The car smells like her, which isn’t a good thing. Mariah hops in and you both agree to roll down the windows, even if it means you have to endure the rain blowing in your faces.

You head back for the house and luckily don’t run into anyone else. As the house comes into view your heart sinks. Parked haphazardly in the middle of the front yard is a white Civic.

Brandie is home.
