You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to be RATHER unpleasant.

You watched the Princess argue with Sir Gregory, volunteered her to dance with you, sat through mindnumbingly boring etiquette lessons, and pretty much FORCED her to accept that you actually like being around her.

After a rather destructive display in the training yard, you and Sylvie are now in the Library for the second part of the day's magic lesson..

>Guard Rank: CAT
>Congratulations, you are now an annoying CAT!
>Not one of those fancy pedigree cats, but rather a mangy stray.
>The Princess now kind of likes you a little!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

"Er, never mind," you say. "I guess she'll tell me when she's ready. Maybe."
"Ehehe, yeah," Sylvie replies. "It's not really my place to say, even though it's seriously not all that big a deal..."
"Yeah, it's not like I'd act any differently if I did know. I mean, I act the same towards you as I did before I found out that your father is Sir Vincent."
"Yeah, and I want you to know that I really appreciate that," Sylvie says, a warm smile on her face.

Your little moment ended by the sudden reappearance of Gerhard, who is now holding a large wooden bucket.

"As requested, here is your bucket." Gerhard says, placing it on the floor beside the table.
"Ah, thanks!" Sylvie replies.
"I was going to ask why you wanted one, but then I realized what today's magic lesson would entail. I thank you for taking precautions against making a mess."
"I felt bad about before so I wanted to be extra careful this time," Sylvie smiles guiltily.

Sylvie then flips through a few papers again before standing up and cracking her knuckles.

"Okay, um..." she begins, "a lot of spells involve creating objects, so I thought it'd be a good idea to start with the easiest thing I know of. After you get this down, we can move on to attack spells and stuff."
"Sounds like it makes sense," you reply.
"Though it's simple, I guess this is a pretty universally useful spell," Sylvie says. "It's called 'Aqua Suspend' and it makes an orb of water."
"...so -that's- what the bucket was for."

"Alright, and how for a demonstration..." Sylvie says as she picks up the bucket and places it on the table. She then holds a hand in the air, and chants.

"Dew of life, come forth and quench my thirst," Sylvie says, Script forming around her. "Aqua Suspend!"

In a flash, the Script disappears as a tiny droplet of water appears several inches above Sylvie's hand, gradually growing to the size of a grapefruit.

"Pretty cool, huh?" Sylvie says, holding the orb of water in place. "It's especially useful in the summer when you get thirsty and don't have anything to drink!"

You look at the orb of water that's floating over Sylvie's hand, and a certain urge comes over you.

You want to poke it.

You REALLY want to poke it.

But that would be bad... right?

Just as you decide not to succumb to your todder-like impulses, you find that your finger is already halfway inside the floating water.

"Oh crap-" you stammer as you pull your hand away, expecting something horrible to happen.

...but nothing does! Sylvie just looks at you, laughing.

"I did the exact same thing when my father first showed me this spell," Sylvie giggles. "Don't worry, it won't explode or anything."
"Oh," you sigh, relieved that you didn't screw up horribly.
"Actually, there's a bit of a trick to this spell," Gerhard says.
"Really?" Sylvie replies, surprised.
"Yes, try casting it again, this time using your other hand as the anchor."
"Um... okay."

Sylvie then holds her other arm out aboce the bucket and casts the spell a second time. Now there's an orb of water floating above either of her hands, and she looks quite confused.

"Umm... what do I do now?" Slvie asks.
"Try moving the first orb into the second," Gerhard says.
"O... okay..."

Carefully, Sylvie does as she's told, turning her hands such that the two spheres of water collide and combine with each other.

"W... wow, I never thought to do this," Sylvie says, surprised that the single larger orb is still floating.
"Now you can release one of the instances of the spell, and the orb should remain intact," Gerhard says.
"Really?" Sylvie squints and lets her left arm rest... and the water is indeed still floating above her right hand! "Oh, wow!"
"Yes, you can actually keep on doing that repeatedly until you reach your personal limit for how much water you can maintain at one time," Gerhard explains.

"Huh," you say, scratching your head. "I guess I'll give it a try... um, what was the spell again?"
"Here you go," Gerhard says, handing you a pice of paper with the NEATEST handwriting that you've ever seen."
"Oh, thanks," you say as you take the paper from him.
"I'm watching the two of you in order to relieve stress, so helping out is the least I can do," Gerhard bows.

You then read the words to the spell several times, remembering how you messed up the first time you cast Sparkle Shine. With the words memorized, you begin chanting.

"Dew of life, come forth and quench my thirst," you say as Script forms in the air around you.

You then stretch out your arm, and...

"Aqua Suspend."

The Script vanishes, and...

...it works! You see a tiny drop of water floating in the air above your hand, showly growing in size until it stabilizes around that of a small grape.

"...that's all?" you say, more than a bit disappointed as you look over at the orb that Sylvie is still maintaining.
"Um, you'll start to make bigger ones as you get better with the spell," Sylvie explains. "That's pretty good for a first try though, mine was the size of a pea the first time I cast it!"
"If you say so..."

Deciding that now is as good a time as any, you make you best attempt to fill that bucket with water. Fortunately, Sylvie finally drops her spell, which helps a lot.

"Aqua Suspend!"

"Aqua Suspend!"

"Aqua Suspend!"

Over and over and OVER again, you cast the spell until you can't cast it any more. Sadly, the bucket isn't barely half-full.

"Ehehe, it looks like you got the hang of the spell!" Sylvie says to you, happily.
"Yeah, that wasn't too hard," you reply.
"Well, water is generally the easiest thing for people to create with magic."
"Yeah, that makes sense," you reply.

Sylvie then looks at the bucket that's sitting on the table.

"Um, I guess that's it for today, so I'll go pour this out..." Sylvie says as she reaches for the bucket.
"No, that won't be necessary," Gerhard replies. "I can always use this to water some of the plants I keep in the back."
"Um, okay!" Sylvie replies, smiling. "Um, I think I'll go visit Mr. Niklaus now, so I'll be seeing you two later!"

"Yeah, I'm always happy to help!"

The two of you then head into the hallway. Sylvie looks at you as if she wants to say something, but then shakes her head and heads off in the opposite direction from where you were headed.

You're a bit sore from Sylvie's amazing exploding punch, so you decide to call it a night and head up to your room. Per usual, you check to make sure that everything's alright with the Princess's room before heading to your own, tossing off your (dirty) jacket into a corner and taking a seat at your desk.

You pick up "A brief history of the Kingdom of Marconetti," and get to reading.

The book begins with the kingdom's beginning as the northern part of old Granache, and then goes into the Fall of the Old Kings and the turmoil afterwards. Marconetti was divided up into several territories, but the mercenary who would become the first king successfully defeated them all together with the son of the water spirit Sivarios.

After the kingdom's founding, its new king went hard to work at forming trade and military alliances. Though several of the kingdoms that Marconetti has allied with have fallen, the bond between it and Granache has remained unbroken to the present day, most likely due to their shared heritage.

After Granache, Marconetti's longest relationship is with its neighbor Ancellotta. The two countries have always been at odds over one thing or another, the most current being a dispute over the latter's slave trade. While full-fledged war has never broken out between them, there's been the occasional conflict here and there. The writer of the book believes that Ancellotta is afraid to fight a proper war with Marconetti, though it flexes its muscles now and then to show that it's still a threat.

The book then goes on about the various kings of Marconetti, from the first to the current king, Celestino. Born with far above average magical talent, he was an adventurer in his youth, along with his friends Gillaume Arnaud and Nicolas Schroeder. While he made quite a name for himself as an adventurer, he retired after being crowned King and has focused on forming strong alliances to secure Marconetti's future ever since.

The book also says that Celestino became king... nearly sixty years ago? Just how old -is- he?

Ending on that confusing note, you close the book and go to sleep.

She doesn't feel like telling us, and it's not actually important in the slightest, so what is the harm in leaving it at "strong suspicion" until she feels comfortable letting us in on the secret?

I don't get why this is such a big deal to you.
>>
>>27788916
>>27788859
Christ, you again? This is a collaborative game, we don't have to anything; powergaming and meta is liable to get us punished or kill the quest, so piss off.
>>
I say we ask Arnaud, Gregory, Vincent and the balroom dancing teacher who their parents are. Who know, it might be relevant one day.
>>
>>27788988
Likely as not, we can find out through textbooks. I have a feeling that finding about these things without the girls telling us themselves will be of little benefit to us. If they feel telling us, or that we need to now, they'd tell us.
>>
>>27788916
You know that it may not be Gregory, right?

You're just looking at the cast list and drawing assumptions.

It's entirely possible that there are more distant branches of the royal family outside the direct descendants we're aware of.

Gregory is a shrewd guess, but it's still a guess until it's confirmed.
>>
>>27788850
You an cool bro OP
>>
>>27789270
It is at this point almost assuredly not Gregory. Mostly because nicolette has royal ties to the kingdom of Marconetti NOT Granache. Though since they are both descended from the sealed king (of water) maybe its not all that dissimilar?
>>
>>27789397
Wait wait wait. Where did you get the idea that she's related to the Marconetti royal family? That makes no sense.

If you're referring to the part where Marianne made an offhand remark about being surprised that she wasn't trying to become a Knight over there, that was a reference to the fact that Nico wants to do butt stuff with Luciana.
>>
>>27789451
She also said nico became a guard in granache to tick off her father indicating that nicos fatherbis in marconetti, or he thinks being a royal guard is stupid. Or both.
>>
>>27789548
> to tick off her father
More has to do with personality and career choice than location, absolutley nothing has hinted at family ties outside of the country, and if that was so, why would she have a manor here?
>>
>>27789548
That theory doesn't track for a several of reasons.

First off, if she were from Marconetti, why would she give a damn if we know who her father is? We know the name of exactly ONE Marconetti noble old enough to be her father, the king, and since its clear that Nico and Luciana are NOT siblings that can't be right.

Not to mention that based on the reactions of both Sylvie and Nico's mum, her dad's secret identity isn't a big deal at all, and thus he MUST be somebody we know or there would be no reason to keep the secret.

Secondly, why would her mother be living in Granache in what appears to be a permanent residence if she was married to a Marconetti noble?

Finally, nothing you said actually implies she's from there, because of what >>27789567 said.
>>
>>27789548
No, it implies that her father is Gregory. With her mother and father both powerful mages and her father holding such a high position already it'd be simplicity itself to just skyrocket her to a lofty position a la Sylvie, not having to do pleb work and getting to work on her skills all day and be good at shit.
>>
The fact that so many of you still don't think Gregory is her father is the reason you need to confirm it. There's going to come a day where knowing Gregory is Nicolette's dad will be of paramount importance.

Who do you want our father in law to be, King HAHA, Sir Vincent the Skilless, or Sir Gregory the Mannerless?

In order this is the greatest list of girls we should court:

Marianne
Sylvie
Luciana
Nicolette
Inconsequential/Bad candidates for wives here

Marrying the heir apparent will make us king. Obviously the best choice.

Marrying Sylvie will make our children incredibly powerful in magery and melee, not to mention giving us connections at the court second only to if we would marry the Princess (Sylvie is fourth in line to the throne if you don't remember). She's also fucking kawaii as shit and has nice tits.

Luciana would give us connections at the court of Marconcicncincicniieieittti, but only weak ones considering she's the seventh child and the inheritance laws are Absolute agnatic.

Nicolette is good with a spear, and bad at everything else. She refuses to learn magic, has a foul temper and poor manners, and doesn't look out of this world drop dead gorgeous.

If anyone disagrees I'll hear their arguments now.
>>
>>27792835
well the fact that Luciana's father uses her as a political tool, and her marrying us gives him no benefit.
>>
>>27792835
What we need to do in order of importance:

Improve magic capabilities (Capacity, knowledge, available spells)
Perfect swordplay (Breathing, footwork, grip)
Continue to develop relationships (Marianne, Sylvie, AnyoneElse)
Read our books and research topics of interest (Finance/Investing, Magic, Sketching/Art)

Side things we should be doing daily or at least as much as possible-
Using our Mana to increase capacity
Participating in dancing classes (other classes should be paid attention to as well, but dancing is our immediate concern)
Making ourselves indispensable to important people (Like saving the Princess or other people like we have been doing)
Improving our standing (Talking to people, learning, doing nice things for people, etc.)
>>
>>27792835
Sword is our woman and no other will ever do our love is is our self. I see Reinhold as being so in love with him self that the thought of a relationship beyond friends is just something he and the deeply ingrained narcism make him constantly strive for self improvement.

magic. art sword
>>
>>27792892
This is true, Luciana isn't really even a possibility for marriage considering her father is draconian and conservative in his views and policies. She would probably run away and live in Granache with us but that's not a desirable ending for us.

Marianne and Sylvie are both vastly superior options.
>>
>>27792835

I disagree because it's inconsequential and irrelevant part of the fluff that will no doubt be revealed to MC in due time.

There's absolutely no compelling reason why to go aspie over Nicolette's pedigree.

There's no reason to go aspie over waifus either. Certainly not on a basis of a min-max table. Love is about emotion, not reason, and MC does not strike me as someone with ambition to become a king, much less scheming and using people as means of achieving this.
>>
>>27792952
Are you crazy or something? We've been playing Reinhold as the nicest motherfucker on the planet, helping people when we don't have to, paying for other people's stuff, forgiving others for trespassing against us, etc.

Reinhold is a selfless philanthropist right now, literally the furthest from a narcissist I could possibly imagine.

>>
>>27792835
>Marrying the heir apparent will make us king. Obviously the best choice.
Neither of these two statements are true.

Concerning the first: at _best_ our title would be "Prince Consort" and we'd have approximately no formal power whatsoever. (See: Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.) Alternatively, marrying us might require Marianne to abdicate. (See: King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.)

Concerning the second: why would we even want to be king? Most of your arguments about the other girls also seem to take the desirability of temporal power as axiomatic or inherent, but I've seen no indication that it's in Reinhold's goal-set.
>>
>>27793386
Because him bein nice and not a total asshole to people is playing meta?

as I see it yea we are nice and we do care about our friends, but are not and will never be interested in a relationship. Unless we become a knight and need to marry for political reasons, I think Reinhold just doesn't care about that stuff and should/dose actively avoid it.

Reinhold isn't chasing down relationships, bu I think it'd be fine if we just let things naturally progress, and not have him be completely celibate.
>>
>>27793407
We are going to be the prince consort, even though we'll get the title King because the current king thinks Prince Consort sounds retarded.

You actually make some good points about wanting to be king and being married to the queen. We'd never see her and we'd have to be super formal all the time.

Which is why I'm a Sylvie guy

Just keep in mind that Reinhold is /tg/, and we can do whatever we want as long as it is the will of the majority. If arc doesn't like it he can kill the quest but nothing will change.
>>

that is so dam boring I want a flawed person, afraid to love, because he has never been in love, and at the same time is slightly repulsed by the thought of physical intimacy.

I consider it to be meta and not how 99.99% of humanity behave. And yes, just because you aren't Reinhold doesn't make you a nihilistic psychopath who rapes puppies like you seem to imply.

Although you have a point in perhaps self-improving thing, we spend a lot in there and it is kind of meta I suppose, although I'd say it's acceptably within bounds of roleplaying the fucking awesome turn of events this orphan's life has taken.

There are times when its in the fluff and there are times it is not, but Reinhold takes baths in the mornings. Running hot water is a great luxury for him that he enjoys very much.

>With the way people seem to play him, it doesn't matter since he's just going to spend it all on anyone he spends time with or on charity.
That's because there is nothing to spendit on. Reinhold can already get whatever he may want thanks to the job. If you have some good suggestions on where to spend the money, feel free to make them.

It's pretty normal in most cultures, even in medieval fantasy europe, for male soldiers to be sexually active. It's also common to have them pursue relationships. Reinhold is neither. I'm not saying he is a harem protag, but I am saying that he is SOMETHING. Hyposexual, asexual, traumatized, anime protag dense, pick your poison.

Mary Sue has nothing to do with him enjoying baths. I have no idea what the hell are you on about there. You said shower doesnt matter, and i stated that it really does.

>We're enjoying TURKEY LEGS.
>You mean going to dinner so you don't starve?
Here you state that he does not enjoy meals that much, but just eating not to starve. I said it is not so, because he really does enjoy the meals here very much. So it is completely about deliciousness.

You are making idiotic arguements, so i just call you on it. It is not acting edgy when someone calls you stupid when you are talking like one.
>>
>>27794112
Reinhold isn't anything like a Mary Sue? You really are just looking to win the argument and being intentionally obtuse or I don't even know what's with you. >Reinhold is played extremely selflessly beyond how normal people behave. The players he spend all of the free time doing things that improve Reinhold's performance. The fact he showers (which we never take as an option, and doesn't matter since this is about how we play him) and has dinner (to not starve, regardless of whether it's turkey legs or bread) does not change this.
What the hell does this mean. Someone translate for me please.

Seriously, take it personal, you are stupid.

I would argue that wanting to excel is not unrealistic. He is in the (rather cushy and comfortable) situation he is because of his talent for combat, and failing to nurture that would be a grievous error.

His selflessness is perhaps a little unusual, but it's hardly outside the 'norm'. I'm quite certain that a commoner in the presence of nobility and entrusted with the safety of royalty would not be considered strange if they were somewhat in awe, and decided to do their best to please. They may never fit in, after all, but if they're nice enough then they may be accepted. So far it seems to be working.

The fact remains that in this situation, our protagonist is in service to someone else. They have a job to do, and the responsibilities that correspond to their position. The Princess, if she really wished it, could probably have our character dismissed - and where would that leave him? He would have had his chance and blown it. Better to show courtesy than be thrown out into the streets.

He made a new thread and left it at hundred posts, so people arguing about various random shit is a given. He doesnt really have the right to argue about what becomes of this particular thread now.

I just hope people would act proper when the quest is still going on.

A little? I think he's been maximum selflessness in every situation he had the opportunity to.

You think wrong.

And even if you were right, there would have been nothing wrong with it.

Eh, he hasn't had that many situations to display selflessness to be honest.

I'm always mad, don't worry. I use it for good.
