Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can stop your plans early.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When I roll 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

You journeyed alone to the deep part of the Great Forest so as to confront Temerity on your own terms. You could come to no accord - you had enough of him, and he of you - and a battle between the pieces of yourself erupted.

After nearly breaching the 'seal' by weakening the shards too far, Temerity agreed to submit, more fearful of unleashing whatever Chaos lay within than being reforged by Humanity. All the shards you've collected are now recast in Order and Chaos.

The new Temerity - Resolve - has given you the location of the final two shards. The first, Shaper, had already repurposed the population of Abbotsford - but you were able to stop it before it could complete a Flesh Titan.

Now, you turn your gaze upon the final shard waiting at the Frozen Hand - Wrath. But first, you need to have a conversation with Ellendra Kalladar - the elven Queen that started all this so long ago.

But flying straight to the xenophobic elvish isles could pose many problems. But you know another elf - Valeria Kavanere - leader of those that call the Great Forest home, and members of your growing northern alliance. You've decided to ask her about the situation.

Forest Den was expecting you. Apparently Hamil had worked with some of the elves to set up a line of communication to Haven. You really have to thank him at some point. At first, he seemed wary about the angels...but he's worked as hard as anyone to ensure Haven's success.

The werewolf you met a long time ago in the depths of the forest - Young Bull - meets you at the entrance to the city. His greeting is brief, but cordial. He guides you around buildings rising from the forest like tree trunks and around walkways hung on the branches. It's a beautiful, peaceful place. You and Flint get plenty of looks from the locals - both werewolf, and elf alike - but they're more curious than hostile. You get the feeling that they don't see many strangers.

Valeria is waiting for you in a great hall at the center of the sprawling strctures. The pillars that support the roof seem alive, rather than cut and shaped; the windows aren't glass, but a thin, membraneous material, reminiscent of fungi. The building seems grown right out of the ground - and you suspect that, perhaps, it was.

"Shadow," she says. "I've been expecting you."

You stand before her in the center of the hall. Young Bull remains at a polite distance. <So I've learned. I'm glad we have your help in this.>

"Yi Fang is hardly trustworthy," she replies, "but I believe I can rely on you to keep him in check." She shrugs. "But we must help. If Arland falls, I doubt the demons will spare the Great Forest long. They'd burn it to spite us."

<True enough.> You consider her a moment. <Do you have any insight as to what the Kanians are thinking? They're playing with forces that are rapidly spiraling out of control.>

"Have you ever wondered why they made demons that could think for themselves?" Valeria asks. "Because they're more deadly. Because they're smart enough to outwit a human. What better weapon than one that can predict and outmanuever its target?" She raises an eyebrow. "But a thinking weapon smart enough to consider its own existence - to be introspective - that's an even greater danger. A weapon like that might not want to fight for anyone, but for itself. For survival."

<You're saying that the demons are already out of control.>

"A demon lord is never in control in the first place," she says. "That's what makes it so powerful. But to summon one is to bring forward a creature that immediately plots against the master. If you think men and angels are the only forces creating this conflict, you'd be mistake. Chaos has an agenda - more chaos. The more conflict, the more they are needed. The demons want permanence. In a way...they want freedom."

<That's a disturbing idea.>

"It is," she agrees. "But they were also made as weapons. In the end, it's us, or them."

<...you speak of order and chaos,> you say. <Those ideas are become more relevant every day.>

"I learned as much when I spoke with my cousin. The Queen won't admit it, but helping you turned out to be more than she could easily chew."

You feel a cold chill run down your back. <The Queen - you're related? What do you know?>

Valeria smiles. "Oh, more or less everything."

"I know everything, too," Flint mutters. "If you've got answers, we want them."

She looks back to you. "You don't have anything to fear from me, Erebus. The Earth and the Shadow were friends, once. Well...as much as anyone could be friend from the Shadow."

<...I'm not Erebus anymore. Shadow is fine.>

your not to bright are you. i was agreeeing with you until you said something about using our humanity/temerity for something
>>
"So it is," she agrees. "I'm sure you have some questions. She realized that you were gathering your strength, and sent me a message so that I could speak on her behalf. She's a bit difficult to reach." Valeria smiles. "It's why my grandmother - her grandmother's sister - left the isles, you know. Too much paranoia, too much fear. We decided to live with the earth again - like the times before the Great War."

<...what...when she...what did she...> You have so many questions...but now that the moment has arrived, you find yourself at a loss.

"I see you don't know where to begin," Valeria says. "I'll give you the larger points. When she first encountered you, the queen was with the elites of her royal guard on a mission to eliminate Do'Vak, the terrible. A dragon - summoned by Erebus himself."

<...summoned by Erebus.> A memory strikes you - faded, supressed - of a giant dragon in an even larger hall. Greeting you, as if it knew you...

"Indeed," Valeria says. "In your absence, the dragon was harrassing elvish ships. The isles and the angels have a certain agreement; the elves keep the Black Lady's navy to the northern seas, and the angels leave the elves in peace."

<Did the Lady speak with the dragon?>

"We don't know," Valeria says. "Though it's quite possible. In any case...once she got a better look at you, well..." Valeria gestures over the ground. "Those of us blessed with Earth have a certain advantage over others. We sense Venia more sharply...we sense the motes of existence, the physical, the real. She could feel a disturbance an the Earth where you walked - as if the world buckled slightly, before you. And she knew who you were."

<What did she do to me, exactly?> you ask.

>con't
>>
"She stopped your plan. She sensed the magical directive - the drive to consume to regain power and reunite your separated pieces. You would have had no choice - the hunger would have forced you into obedience. The magic would have chosen a course for you. It would have been quick and effective. What she gave you was a choice."

Valeria gestures with her hands as she speaks. "A Ley Line runs under the Palace of Shadow - key to Erebus's plans, but at the same time, his undoing. She bent the earth back upon you, and overwrote that magical directive. Corrupted it, you might say...scrambled, changed. She sent you out along the same Line, fearful that exposure to the concentrated Shadow in the Palace would undo her work. Just that effort in combating Erebus's magic has rendered her feeble and helpless. I doubt she'll fully recover until his plan is put to rest in its entirety - though she's much better, thanks to you. Well enough to contact me over this distance."

<...you mean how I've changed the Shards.>

Valeria nods. "That's right. She can feel your efforts. As you've changed Erebus's mark upon your being, the pressure on her soul has lessened. It is almost done, now. But we have more problems."

<...Chaos,> you say.

"That's right. Chaos is growing. Magic is growing. The demon lords threaten us all. It isn't enough to just recover all the shards. You have to restore yourself as you were - the Lord of Order. Arbiter of Justice."

<Will that make a difference if I've changed myself so much?>

Valeria shrugs. "If it doesn't, we're doomed anyway. Perhaps that's what we need, Shadow. Not Order, to erase, or Chaos, to grow - but Balance, to preserve. Though how this shall be done is a mystery to me. Us."

<Did you feel the core of Venia?> you ask. <I had to fight my shards to bring them under control. We're holding something back - something that almost got loose.>

>con't
>>
"Chaos," Valeria says. "We don't know everything, be we know that the core of Venia is the source of Chaos - of life itself, really, but the same energies that give us life and motion also threaten to anihillate us. It's true that, with rising magic, we could all become gods - but I doubt it would get that far. The demons would overrun us, first. Reality would bend, and the nether, where magic and imagination run together, would bleed onto the surface. And after that...who knows? But Venia, and our lives, would all end."

Flint whistles. "By the elements. Is this all happening tomorrow? Because we've got a lot of other things on our plate."

Valeria chuckles. "Well, probably not. But we can feel the symptoms already. The increasing power of magic, itself. The shaking of the world. A Pentaverate nearing completion. Some of this can be attributed to the conflicts between men, but not all - no. The Chaos sealed below is not content. It wants out. The nether is its medium; the demons are its agents."

"Are you saying that Chaos itself is against us?" Flint asks.

"...less a being, and more a primal force, I think," Valeria says. "But it might as well be so."

<...then...what do we do?> you ask. <This seems beyond all of us.>

"My cousin had the foresight to compose an answer to that question," Valeria says. "You must return - not as Erebus, but to your full power. Only then do we have the chance at all. A Pentaverate might not be countered by all the mages in the lands."

<How do I do that?>

"The ancient records of intellgence gathered during the war give us clues," she says. "Few ever went to the frozen hand - but we have the Arbiter's testimony. The Leader of the Black Hand."

David, again. <Go on.>

"He was confident about his position, his knowledge," she says. "He relished his relationship with Erebus. He never gave specifics, but in arrogance, he let slip the existence of something beyond Venia itself. We think that this place is where Erebus came from."

<Where?>

"The Endless Void," Valeria says.

Flint raises his eyebrow. "The Void? That's been sealed since the Elementomachy."

<...seals can be broken,> you say.

"Indeed, they can." Valeria looks out one of the thin windows of the great hall. "The Skysever permeates this world, but it also surrounds it. A great Wind of storm and thunder keeps Venia shrouded from the Void. It was not always so - once, at the end of the seas, there was a great darkness that stretched into oblivion. Somewhere in that great nothingness is Erebus's true home."

Flint glances at you. "...sounds like a job for the Cirrus." He draws in a breath. "Blackwater's been out that far, hasn't he? Maybe we should ask him for his advice."

"A man of great experience," Valeria admits. "I would seek his counsel."

<Alright,> you say. <Let's say Erebus is from this great nothingness, and his home - and the way to restore my powers - are out there. Where do we even begin to search?>

"You'll have to find that on your own," she says. "But the Palace at the Frozen Hand should have answers. In any case, you'll need the last shard. I sense it lingering there, sitting on a Ley Line. Waiting. It has the same goal as you - just in the opposite direction."

<...I see.>

"I would be most careful," Valeria says. "It has had a long time to gain power. And who knows what waits in Erebus's Palace?"

Flint nods. He folds his arms, then glances at you. "Shadow...if you need to face the shard alone...that's fine. Just - when you go to finish things off, I want to be on the Cirrus. I want to be there for you."

<For now, I think that would be best,> you say. <I have difficulty controlling things when the shards get involved.>

"Once you're back in one piece," Valeria says, "we can swivel to face the threat of Kan-Abar, and its demons. And then, having treated the symptoms, we can put our minds to solving the greater problem."

>con't

We reforged Fleet/Breez into a beast, remember? the Contrast afforded the Shard extra bampf. SM, back me up on this one.
>>
<...why would Erebus do all this?> you ask her. <Why was he against the world? Against life?>

"Life on Venia is a product of order, mixed with a dose of Chaos," she says. "A structure of order. A soul of chaos. That is the nature of things. He wasn't against life...no. But he was against Chaos. I think, in his mission to destroy it, he was willing to sacrifice life as collateral."

<Without even blinking?> you ask. <What could possibly drive him so far? What could make him create David, the Arbiter? What could make him set the Black Hand on the world? Why did he cause so much chaos in order to kill Chaos?>

"That," Valeria says, "is a very good question. Perhaps you'll find the answer." She shakes her head. "I, for one, don't care to know. But as it stands, Chaos must be reigned in. Is the extreme position so hard to relate to? From one perspective, it's the method of greatest simplicity."

<...but not right.>

Valeria gives you a warm smile. "I am glad you chose to think so, Shadow. And so is the Queen."

Yeah SM I would prepare for a swarm of questions. You just opened up the library of knowledge to one of the most intricate quests on this board. We're gonna be here a LONG time.

Also if you don't mind SM could you address my question from the last thread? Here:

Yknow SM I was thinking, and I have absolutely no clue if you even remotely planned for this but roll with me here. Would it be possible for us to "learn" Wind Magic by studying the shadow winds contained within our artifact airship? Its just an idea, and I imagine it'd be a science project for a time when the world isn't actually about to implode.

Feel free to answer with can't answer that dave if you must, but I was really curious if that's even a remote possibility or lol nope material.

The idea that the Atlantis Keystone may be a sealed Leviathan is a good assumption, but highly meta. Shadow doesn't really have enough information to connect those dots; it has never happened in-character. I shy away from that statement.
>>

>Bring up our suspicion that the Keystone of Atlantis is Leviathan sealed in ball-form.

Oh yeah.

We read about the keystone in a book. Auriel told us what it did, and that it's more powerful than several dynamos.

It's powers are related to water.

Leviathan just went straight up missing.

All of that is in-character knowledge.

You force your mana forward to heal Temerity. His bent and twisted armor unfolds and unbends; his shredded flesh pieces itself back together.

Humanity's light flares. Temerity's darkness swirls. They mix together in a strange twisting dance of light and shadow, and the energy pours into Breeze.

<...was Erebus ever really an Elemental Lord?>

Valeria shakes her head. "We don't think so. Order masquerades as an eight element of darkness. But the reality is that the seven elements are all shades of chaos; shadow is order. Or, you could say that the seven are all shades of Order, as opposed to pure Chaos. Venia is a unique existence. We stand on a border between two extremes, living on a knife's edge without even realizing it."

<Who is the Black Lady?> you ask. <I've heard so much about her...but so little.>

Valeria shrugs. "That is one of the great questions of our time. No one knows where she came from - she just popped out one day, and the next thing we all knew, the north was united for the first time in hundreds of years."

<Does anyone else know we used to be Erebus?>

Valeria shakes her head. "No. Right now...well. It's a topic that needs to be broached as gently as possible, to say the least."

You glance pointedly over your shoulder to Young Bull, still lingering at the door. You have a feeling werewolves have excellent hearing.

Valeria notices your gaze. "Oh, a simple spell kept all that private. The hall itself is enchanted against prying eyes and ears, as well. Your secret is safe with me."

<I wonder about the other lesser lords,> you say. <I want to find them, and help them. Geb, particularly.>

Valeria seems taken aback. She considers this for a moment. "...Geb. Our Lord Geb." She sighs. "The wind there is a terrible thing, Shadow. The wastes to the south are a sight to behold. I don't know what could help us, there."

<The Staff of Winds might help.>

Valeria glances upward. "...lost to ancient spells."

<I've been to Xile in search of the staff. It wasn't there.>

>con't
>>
>>27801160
Or we'll argue about acquiring what Hydra leads to.
>>
>>27801160
this is about new Erebus shard, not XP
>>
"What? I don't understand."

You explain to Valeria your goal in helping Flint through Yi Fang, and your search for the staff, ultimately ending with the discovery of the fake planted by Melody.

Valeria takes that in for a time. "The Staff is out there, somewhere," she says. "But this Melody...a shadow mage. Powerful. An acquaintance of Yi Fang. Vanished into thin air." Valeria hums in thought. "Perhaps I'm just influenced by recent topics, but she certainly sounds like a candidate for the Black Lady."

<...that's what I was thinking,> you say.

"Maybe. It's stuck as conjecture. If Fang has no more leads, then the only person to ask if the Lady herself. She might be even less approachable than my cousin. As for the other elemental lords...I know little."

<I had thought that there was a chance Leviathan might be sealed in the Keystone of Atlantis,> you say.

Valeria smiles. "You have many thoughts, Shadow. You'd have to check the Keystone yourself. I know little of the subject, but there's a chance you're right. Most scholars believe Leviathan was destroyed or pinned to the bottom of the sea, unreachable."

You explain to Valeria your brush with the true Timorian Deep, when you encountered Isolation - and the presence you felt there.

Valeria is silent for a time.

"Tarun Gakth is not a natural formation," she says. "It was created in a climatic battle between Geb and Aeolus. Geb tried to defend the dwarves...and ultimately, he failed. The dwarven empire was annihilated." She looks past you, into the distant. "We hated the dwarves, Shadow. Do you know where those names come from? Dwarves, Elves? They're Geb's names for us. In the tongue of the earth...elf, was 'treeling'. Dwarf was 'rockling'. Though we fought amongst ourselves, Geb was a caring Lord who sought peace for us both." Valeria lowers her head. "We should have stood by them. But instead, we watched them die, thinking to have the Lord to ourselves. How selfish. How terrible."

<...and the Deep?>

"The dwarves were destroyed," she says, "but their empire spread deep underground. Their technology and their steel was unmatched. They are gone, but their empire is not." She cups her hands. "Things left behind for so long tend to be like little seeds." Her palms open, and she spreads her arms. "Over time, they grow into great things. I don't know what you felt, but until you are strengthened once more...I'd advise great caution."
>>
>>27801308
I think we learned, we just need a dynamo shell to do it.

Which is why we should loot xile because of the destroyed airships
>>
>>27801272
Names. With all due respect, and all of us here owe you respect, SM, I don't think the names Breeze and Maker are distinguished enough to match the other shards more classy titles. I think "Zephyr" is a literal translation of Breeze would work and for Maker "Origin", "Genesis", "Source" or my favorite "Provenance" would do very nicely.

There's just more important things to deal with in the short term than that.
>>
>>27801256

"Other nations?" she asks. "You are curious. Well...hmm."

"The Empire is little better than the elvish isles - just more power-hungry. I think Sandalphon sees himself as a necessary existence to all of Venia. He's sought to expand and consolidate in the name of peace - but he's just created a nigh-military state.

"Arland is, inevitably, subservient to the larger neighbor."

"We are -not- subservient," Flint grumbles. "They're a valued ally." His face softens. "At least...I thought they were."

Valeria nods to him. "All the same, Arland relies on that protection to maintain independence from Archon. I have nothing against your family, Sir Flint. It was merely an observation."

Flint sighs. "...it's not that far off the mark. Just don't tell Yi Fang I said that."

She chuckles. "I don't plan to." She looks back to you. "As for Kelvere...I was wary of Duke Vellik, fearing that he might expand into the Great Forest in some sort of power play...but now, I just feel pity. And with our alliance, perhaps he'll be more open to friendship, rather than competition.

"Archon...well." Valeria shrugs. "If you know Yi Fang, you know Archon. And I know you know him quite well."

<Too well.>

"As for Felnoir," she continues, "Governor Blackwater - since his election - has always been a friend to the forest. He has a rough-and-tumble past, shall we say, but he's the best of men."

>>27801257

Let's prioritze. We can get the treasure later maybe, but right now Erebus needs to be reforged into something new, and something better. Besides, with all the power we gain from this we'll be able to do a plethora of things. We'll finally have options.
>>
>>27801736
Except we don't "have all winter." What we've learned is we should be setting level priorities for our actions to prepare for long term consequences.

You're literally going after the loot angle CARROT that SM swings in front of you repeatedly to get you into nonsense. Greed vs. Responsibility.
>>
>>27801702
1. Which is why I said it was in terms of "now money"
2. Gear enchanted to attack shadow aligned beings. Guess what the bulk of our forces are.
3. Nothing on Xile is free. Nothing on Xile is without hassle.
4. There is more XP elsewhere. I will give you the airship parts, but I don't see going for them as the best course of action right now. If we want to go for air superiority, it would be more efficient to steal or sabotage enemy ships.

I expect on of our go-to spells, Spirit Bind, to be less useful here. He can probably break right out of anything but a really well-rolled bind.

Initiate from stealth, and stay in stealth as long as possible. If discovered, keep Fast Blink running to stay away. Perhaps Earthforge walls to LoS him, and use them to set up opportune strikes from cover.
If we can get access to water, that would be a great way to soften his blows and slow him down (while he's maintaining a physical, cohesive form - he should be able to ink through the water quickly, but he can't hit us terribly hard without reforming).
Kinda wishing we had Shadowbomb and the abilities beyond it - the tactics Silence used during our first battle would be ideal here.

There seems to be a slight confusion. Let me clear this up.

The Palace of Shadow at the Frozen Hand was Erebus's base. It is where the shard of Wrath is waiting.

The void is beyond Venia entirely. Everyone is correct in seeking Blackwater's guidance (he's been to the end of the world, literally) and sailing the Cirrus into space.

The Palace and Space are two different places. You don't need anything special to get to the Palace - it's a place in Venia, far to the north.

Breeze is for Going Fast. That's really it. It doesn't have anything to do with the airship, specifically.

Theoretically you could use any shard to empower an airship's capabilities, like back in the battle above the Ring City. Obviously, the shard in question and the purpose you have in mind are important factors.

You awaken to noise. Tyrael is alighting on the bluff next to you, his wings flared. "Shadow!"

<Tyrael? What is it?>

"We've got word from Blackwater," he says. "Obis, Freja, and Adavan have taken off. He said Adavan was talking to Obis about some sort of 'Fire Key'. Next thing he knew, they were gone."

The realization comes quickly. Adavan has mentioned he was getting impatient, and that he wanted to know if Obis might have leads on the fourth key...

He's gone on ahead without you...but he always had his own quest. That doesn't bother you as much as the prospect that he, Obis, and Freja might get in over their heads out there.

There's a moment's pause, and then the sage speaks. "Go with them. Reclaim the truth of your birth. If the Shadow does not help you, you will certainly fail, though even if it does, you may still fall short. And if you fail, you -will- die."

If they're trying to reclaim the throne right this moment along with the key retrieval, you are correct and they are doomed to failure. If they are just going after the key (which is my assumption), then the prophecy doesn't apply.

You instantly think of the prophecy. If Obis tries to retake his throne without your help, he's as good as dead.

<Did he say anything about where they were going?>

"The frostbite ocean, north of the Shiprakers," Tyrael says. "Blackwater says Obis was telling them a story about an uncharted island where Leviathan made his home. Apparently his ancestors, Logi's supporters, were involved in conflict there."

So...he's not going to confront Nulis. But it sounds relatively risky, all the same.

Flint and Auriel send you off at the mana pool.

"You sure you're ready, Shadow?" Flint asks.

<No. But it's time.>

He nods. "We'll keep track of Adavan's progress. Who knows? Maybe you can beat them to that island."

<See if Blackwater can figure out more specifics,> you say. <He's been around. And ask him about...well. You know.>

Flint nods. "I'll do that while you're gone. Good luck."

<Thanks.>

You teleport through the pool to another place on the edge of your memory.

--------
--------

You're in a small cave.

It's still there - the dark - but it simply knows to get out of your way.

You see the altar you remember from so long ago - but now you're sure it's not an altar, but a chair. The back extends up into the ceiling, up, up, beyond your sight. The carved words above it snatch at your memory. Images come flooding back. You remember standing here, straining to read those words, settling on committing them to memory...only to forget.

Opposite the shadow mana pool, and the throne, of sorts, is the lone hallway you walked.

You step from the pool and approach the altar.

The words are clear to you, now. You don't even have to Translate them. It's as if your thoughts have been transposed to something solid.

"The annihilation plan might effect memory stability. This is a note in case such an eventuality does occur. This device allows long-distance detection of major chaotic points. Activates upon touch. Avoid chaotic points until power is restored. Lines were set to converge three sub-units on this location. Two should be here; the third is higher in the complex. Go and gather it, first."

What do you do?

>touch the altar. You did that already, right? This is knowledge for the taking.

If only we'd bought Erode.

You decide to avoid doing anything unnecessary, for the moment. It might give you away to Wrath.

You step toward that long, lonely hallway. And then you start running.

You build speed, soon hitting the fastest pace you can safely muster inside the hall. You realize that the hall slowly curves, turning in a wide circle, rising up through the earth. After about ten minutes running as fast as you can go, you reach the room in which you first encountered the elves.

When all you could do was crawl...it must have taken you hours. Maybe days.

Your location is as you remember - a stone-slab room supported by rows of rough-hewn columns. There are no decorations; no lights. No aesthetics at all. It's pure function.

To your right is the hall from which the elves emerged; ahead is the wide chamber in which you remember fighting the dragon, Do'Vak.

Dust shakes from the ceiling. You tense up.

Again - a slight tremor. A tiny inkling of Shadow. It's thick, here, but there's a pulse from up above.

Which way do you go?

>straight ahead, toward the large chamber
>left, down the other hall
>>
>>27803445
Yes.

As a member of Team Hydra, I fully condone buying Erode. It seems stupid not to, when we know we'll be going up against something which has Darkness Within
>>
>Ila isn't as powerful in a straight-up fight, but she rarely charges straight on. Her power lies in magical deception combined with her agility and speed. She is capable of limited flight, but this tires her quickly.

The epicenter was directly above the chamber in which you fought the dragon.

After the energy dies, all is quiet. You remain still. No summoned demons appear; no constructs, no other magic.
