Unfrizz your tails, dammit. It's time for CATastrophe! It's gotta be CATurday somewhere east of Eastern time, and this party just can't wait anymore!

In any case, what better way to start off than with my FATE project that now I think is in BETA.

Also, next CATurday (in two weeks) I should have the forum set up.

Anyways here is the prerequisite FAQ:

This should answer your questions. And as always if your wondering about your personal setting, always remember:

"It's a big ocean out there, so go for it!"

FUCK YES MORE CATastrophe. So for this edition of CATurday, I am thinking we should talk about creatures, ecosystems and other natural type things.

Anyone have some interesting ideas for plants or animals that might have developed from the planet flooding, and the influx of alien life from the comets? All kinds of cool oceandwellers that might arise.

Well there was a type of tree that was big, floated, and was amphibious as it was able to walk on land for short periods of time.

Also there's things like the floater mega-kelp and other odd things.

I was thinking of a species of mutant lily pad that can support a small village with it's size and buoyancy. But these are rare.

Howdy, neighbor.

Just coming over from the VeloCITY thread (>>27743355) to commend the good work done here. I was here when the CATastrophe idea was first conceptualized. I didn't follow it closely recently, but it's great to see it form into something concrete.

From one homebrew to another, good job.

Good golly... these two settings together would go together like PB&J.

the Kemomimi would love the skating and what not of VeloCity while sticking it to the buzzkill Man, and the Juvies would find the CATastrophe world to be a utopia. Of course they'd need to learn to swim and hopefully find a large enough settlement to grind, but the surfing would be spectacular!
>>
>>27820171
You might say that. It's a thought.

Air jellies. A somewhat baffling mutation of jellyfish, they have a vacuum-filled 'float bladder' that enables them to rise out of the ocean to avoid predators. An immense nuisance.
Isle coral, which becomes buoyant in large quantities through an unknown mechanism, detaching from the ocean floor and becoming free-floating 'islands'. None of the reefs have gotten more than a few hundred feet across yet.
Swarm fish- a minnow-sized carnivore that travels in immense swarms, they lure in larger fish by looking like normal minnows and then rip the predator to shreds when it attacks. Tends to be docile if not attacked, thankfully.
Mechanoids- leftover ocean-monitoring biobots from the days when there was land. Indigestible and immune to aging, they swim the endless blue, occasionally surfacing to broadcast reports to agencies that no longer exist. By tuning in to the correct frequencies you can receive useful updates on weather, ocean currents, and the movements of fish populations.
Brainy octopi- not quite fully sapient, but smart enough to use simple tools, communicate by changing the color of its skin, and play fetch. A fairly common companion animal- they're too useful to really be called pets.

I would imagine they are rare and grow too slowly to be of much use. Also one of those just sounds... horrible if there is a storm. Not stable, and what if theres a tsunami or something? Any structures on it would buckle and/or splinter under the movement.

I dunno, I myself am trying to come up with utility type plants that help explain away the needs that people might have. In my setting Bananas are one of the big staples. The hub town the players return to is known as Banana Town, and they have a pretty big plantation there.

Bananas grow in the tropical climate of the setting, and they have a wide variety of uses. They can provide a good source of fiber, vitamin B and some vitamin C, they can be fermented into beer, the sap can be used as a cheap adhesive, the large leaves can be used as umbrellas, or a good roofing material, the peels can be used to filter out heavy metal contaminants, they are fibrous and can be used to make clothing and other textiles and even PAPER,

Basically fuck yes bananas.

>I would imagine they are rare and grow too slowly to be of much use. Also one of those just sounds... horrible if there is a storm. Not stable, and what if there's a tsunami or something? Any structures on it would buckle and/or splinter under the movement.

I'd wager so, so there would be a large margin between the number of houses and the edge.

Also Tsunamis don't happen on the ocean, but rogue waves on the other hand is a certain possibility.

I'd wager these large lily pads sit on the ocean in calm water areas that won't disturb them. So you'd not see them in the polar regions where storms run unabated and what not.

Also might be useful to know about plants to add entries for in the Bestiary. Even for the default of the setting or a little higher tech for my TT might be a smart survival thing to know for a character. :D

I got roughly to half of the diplomacy system before i realized that i don't really know where to go further with it. you realize octopi are already probably smarter than most dogs. Arguably they are even sentient, because they are smart as hell.
>octopi can learn through first hand experience or watching another octopus
>they use tools such as coconut shells to hide from predators, as well as manipulating water jets and rocks
>they have been found to play with things like toys, and have individual personalities and temperaments

Before too long we'll have a FATE Core splatbook put together, and there are a few people around here who've put together a few jury-rigged systems for fourm games, IRC and the like. I think we'll have to wait until some of them show up, though -- Saturday's only just started for most of us.

And yes, these threads have generally served as a mine for new ideas. I don't know, however, what precisely is in direst need of fleshing out.

Think of ideas for interesting plants and animals, or come up with a name for a settlement, and then flesh it out. CATastrophe is a setting. There are like 3 game systems for running games in it, but it honestly works for any system with a bit of work. I myself run a CATastrophe game using simple d6

If you have wiki experience, then sign up for 1d4chan and you can start adding in creatures/plants or settlements on the appropriate pages. Also once you have read up on the setting, feel free to write stories in the setting. It helps to have a bit of stuff like that to help new people get into the feel of the place.

I put one together for IRC, but didn't manage to find a group for it, yet. What I still need are extended fishing and salvaging tables. I stole the wasteland junk tables from wizarddawn to create a 300 entry salvage table, and wikipedia'ed my own forty entries on a fishing table, but I need more. Random tables make games fun.

I have an adventure planned that starts out with a fishing competition, and progresses into diving for shinies, but I'll need gamefinder folk, because my D&D group isn't interested.
>>
>>27825731
What I am thinking of doing for salvage loot in FATE is to leave it to what the DM wants to have for what is found, but having various "grades" of shiny to find. Instead of tables, leave it more to the creativity of the DM.
>>
>>27825760
That's fine and all, and I can see a place for it, particularly for plot-hooks. But I like having random tables, too. I don't want to have to come up, on the spot, with salvage items. I'd be too tempted to produce something that suits the players' needs or, if I didn't, would feel like I was intentionally dicking players around. Random loot tables let me roll. Having DMs assign treasure that they hand-pick always feels shoehorned and wrong, to me. But if I roll 175 on 1d300? Oh look... you got a permanent marker. Score.

Like a "minor shiny - common, mostly good for barter, capable of one very limited effect or only usuable as part of a larger assemblage of shinies"

"significant shiny - precious, capable of a single limited impressive effect, potential powersource for other shinies, attracts pirates and thieves, worth a fight over"

"major shiny - super rare, mere rumors of possessing one will draw in all pirates in the region onto you, and various factions will join in, capable of a really powerful effect capable of changing the fate and reputation of entire island chains".

sort of thing?

Actually I have 6 grades

+0: Recyclable Junk
+1: Spare Parts
+2: Useful Salvage
+3: Intact Salvage
+4: Pristine Salvage
+5: Earless Salvage

A DM can customize what is found, either by having it as items players can keep or sell off for fangs.

I might tweak this again in the next BETA update. That with some pre-made characters and a starter adventure to boot.

Until they learn to open your drawers and eat all your food.

Speaking of octopi, its been well documented that certain species of octopi will use coconut shells as a sort of mobile bunker and others will tear off man-o-war tentacles and attach them to their bodies like some kinda venomous assault armor. Maybe we could do something with that.

Have installing an octopi home into the bottom of the boat be a... fuck what you'd call it? Like a feat but for your boat? and represent it with a random rolled "improvement" to the hull below the water line every so often, like it fixes a load of jelly fish tentacles to the bottom of the bottom that protect from scuba diving pirates or it could improvise temporary fixes to the hull using coconuts.

Then there's that rare time you all wake up to find it's built an elaborate mechanical device on the foredeck, with antenna and satellite dishes sticking out of it from all angles that doesn't appear to do anything but beep at random moments.

Got some setting ideas.

Arky Pelligoe: Name of a chain of islands located between 35º and 40º north latitude, and 120º to 122º west longitude.

Some of the islands of Arky Pelligoe are merely small mounds or spires of rock and sand, barely jutting out of the water at high tide. Residents on these smallest islands have houses built on stilts around these high points -- they know where the islands come closest to the water's surface without actually breaching it, and the stilts usually are metal poles driven into the rock just underwater.

The larger islands are rather steep and mountainous, featuring some trees not to be found anywhere else in the Endless Blue. There are not many wide-open places where large settlements of Kemomimi can gather, and as a result the entire chain of islands houses less than four thousand full-time citizens. The largest group, however, have settled in the largest island available, a tall crag of rock called Witnie Island; a community of five hundred Kemomimi dwells either on the peaks of the island or in a system of tunnels driven through the rock below. There is one ruined house on the east end of the island, at its highest peak, that is hundreds of years old -- the first settlers found it already standing when they arrived. Smithson House, as it is called, was carefully renovated (it was in need of a new roof, among other things), and is now the home of Arky Pelligoe's governor.

So... Sierra Nevadas? Also a Southern Californian, here (just guessing that you are, too). Last thread I was told that the water is up 1,500 meters, which leaves a ridiculous amount of California above the waves.

I wanted to do the San Gabriels above LA, with a dearth of salvage beneath them. So I only did one small settlement, which is technically over Ojai. Would you be interested in developing your idea a little bit, so that I can steal it?

I'm attaching what I have so-far, in the roughest of rough drafts, in case you'd like to let me take your ideas and run with them.
>>
>>27831258
Take what you can get -- you have my blessing.

It's amazing what a dip into Wikipedia will do for your ideas. I just looked up the San Gabriels (I'm not from California, but I've been to Tahoe a few times) and it occurs to me that the top of Mount Baldy would probably be above the surface, and the remains of the Mount Wilson Observatory would be a great place to set a Shiny dive -- if they haven't already been ransacked.
>>
>>27831258
>>27831544
It also occurs to me that I might conceivably set a maelstrom or some kind of whirlpool about eighty miles E.S.E. of Witnie Island and claim that the currents are strange because of the unusual depth of the ocean there; in real life, that's the location of Badwater Basin in Death Valley (lowest point in the lower 48 states). You see what I mean -- one can mine a lot of ideas out of the real-life geography.
>>
>>27831607
Grew up in "the gateway to death valley." Badwater is weird and cool, and probably would cause some bizarre-ness. The water table, there, is high as hell because of the White Mountains (I have no idea if that's the real name of those mountains--we just call them that. It's probably just part of the Sierras). Good thoughts, and I hadn't even thought about Death Valley. But I'm now thinking that it needs to be an equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle myth.

But yeah--badwater is neat. Walk a few hundred feet into a mile-wide salt sea. And it's still just up to your knees, and you're slogging through a foot and a half of salt-dirt that clings to you like onion layers. Gonna have to do something with Death Valley. Maybe Darwin's Deluge, or something.

Vanguard Home
Founded by shipwrecked Akadmee students who were on a field trip, they discovered a massive artificial island complex designed by an earless archetect for unknown reasons. Located at 34° 43′ 36″ N, 139° 23′ 45″ E and using a geothermal reactor for power as the artificial floats some 800m above a volcanic island that was converted for the project by the Earless. The artificial island itself is anchored by multiple, hexagonal pillars coated with a unknown, shiny material that never seems to chip. The island itself is made up of hexagonal plates 1 kilometer in width, linked together by said pillars with a mass transit network integrated into the design.

The city has a it's own recycling and 3d printing facilities, and can produce anything if the Kemo has the raw materials for it. Unfortunately the computer for the 3D printer is missing a lot of clothing information, only able to make clothing seen in the 1940's around the world. That and the musically inclined Akadmee survivors picked up a "Swing" style of music they perform at their parties.

There are multiple large hydroponic farms that feed the community, large docks, and for the Akadmee survivors at the time, it felt like home. Enough to not want to leave. Other shipwrecked travelers joined the population here, as well as adventurous souls looking to find a new place to start.
>>
>>27831940
Also note in the real world, Vanguard Home corresponds to Mount Mihara near Tokyo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Mihara
>>
>>27831970

Is that a good place to put it? I can see that the island's had a lot of work done to it by the Earless, but Mount Mihara's only 760m high -- Mount Fuji is over 3,700. If whatever structures are on Mihara are still above water, so should Fuji be... although I don't know what they'd put on it.
>>
>>27832178
And Mt. Whitney is 4,400m. I imagine it as a big mountain (but nowhere as big as it used to be) rising up out of the sea, with its highest point on the east, surrounded by smaller but equally steep islands.
>>
>>27832178
The artificial island of Vanguard Home floats on the surface of the water, anchored by the supports. The supports are the tallest thing on the Vanguard Home skyline, as they are 2000m high, but the water level only rose 1500m. 740m above the island.

Has to be to be safely sitting over a small volcano for it's geothermal power.
>>
>>27832257
I should clarify, I mean the supports tower over the island by 500m, as the supports would be 2000m tall by old sea levels.
>>
>>27832225
Speaking of Whitney... first off? That's exactly the name of every maybe-bad-guy, bad-ass, old animal folk. Whitney has to be the cliche bad-guy name. Like the Vecna of Catastrophe.

But, if we're going by the lore I've read so far? Honestly? There's a serious-ass portion of California that is above sea level. Whitney is still a giant mountain, even with 1500 meters of sea-level rise. That's not some mountain rising out of the sea--it's a giant mountain on some rugged-ass terrain.

But Whitney is a place that is kinda gross to actually climb. It's disgustingly polluted, for an outdoors spot. Bears are all over that area, but avoid Whitney, because it's gross and ick-earless. Only dip-shit, young, male bears go there. So I think that a land animal needs to be a bear that has developed to compete with the sea-borne prey it stalks. Like a polar bear that can eat a whale. I want giant bears in Catasrophe. Not even the gay kind (maybe a little-bit the gay kind).

Slightly trouble with Fuji san is that it's an active volcano, though that would also mean you'd probably get sizable land formation via volcanic activity once most of its base is underwater.

>>27832555

Nobody will care if you jack the flying laserbears from world of cynnibarr.
>>
>>27834248
Actually, Mount Mihara is a volcano that is active as well, but much smaller. I would wager some earless tech involved in the construction of the island and the geothermal tap that provides power to the settlement is all part of the plan.

I would also wager with 1.5 kilometers more of water on the Earth's surface, there would be an increased incidence of geological activity. Namely earthquakes and volcanoes.
>>
>>27834248
Gentlemimi I think we've found the solution to Neonhoggr, Chamelezord, and El Camaroned Pistolero.
>>
>>27834295
Hmm. Maybe nobody lives on Fuji in this setting because it erupted about 100 years ago. Older folks in Vanguard are still retelling the stories their grandparents told them about the day it happened.
>>
>>27835396
Well, probably what also caused the ship the Akadmee students were on to go off course in a storm. Their ship went aground hitting some random buildings near Vanguard Home, because of a wave that hit them from when Fuji went off BIG TIME.
>>
>>27834248
>>27832178
I imagine Fuji would have a very high tech level or at least a very high shiney deposit due to being in Nippon and next door to Tokyo

So idea behind designing this setting is something along the lines of:

>The ocean is really REALLY big. Anything could happen. So everything is canon, and at the same time nothing is canon

In other words people can use other previously established locations and characters in their stories, but nothing is concrete and unchangeable (like some sort of world map, for instance)

think of it like Jazz. You can take a base concept, add what you like, take out what you don't and no one needs to say "that's not canon!". Just say it's in another part of the world ocean!
>>
>>27838272
and now I will never be able to play this game. I cant handle open ended games like that. I need concrete cannon things to draw on. I need stated monsters and weapons, I need a world to plan things out on.

Shit man I was just starting to like this setting.

>>27838314
Oh?

You'll get that with my next update. A Beastiary, and a intro adventure. Also have you looked at the 1d4chan page? That is developing quite rapidly.

But that's exactly what we've been making.

Imagine the Endless Blue as a great big felt cloth. Now imagine places like Divers Bay, Akadmee, and Pero-Pero as smaller felt objects with a little piece of velcro stuck on the back of them. You're free to not only use whichever of these felt pieces that strikes your fancy, but place em wherever you want too! Maybe your Akadmee is right next to Pero-Pero, or maybe it doesn't exist at all. Maybe you dont like Neonhoggr and leave him off the board, or maybe you like him so much you take some spare felt and make a bunch of your own seakaiju.

Of course, once you place something down on that big blue felt, you cant exactly change it mid game since consistency is a must for an enjoyable game, but a lot of arguments are skipped by leaving the world more or less malleable and just giving you a set of rules/guidelines to mold by.
>>
>>27838343
>CATastrophe isn't exactly a "Crawl a dungeon, kill the monster, get the loot" sort of game.

Did someone say Kaiju? Because I really think that would fit this setting well.

Catgirls fighting other catgirls seems to be a touchy subject, but fighting animals is surely fine? What if monster bones, hides, scales, are valuable assets for armor, medicine, tools, and all sorts of stuff? And monster meat a delicacy.

So yeah, like an aquatic, happy, catgirl Monster Hunter type thing.

Although obviously a lot of flexibility is allowed in this setting, there seems to be a few solid rules. One of which is that this is a happy setting. But it seems like once you start introducing danger and fighting there's always going to be that question of what is too dark. So maybe it would help us to have a few simple concrete rules, and besides strongly recommending that people follow those, quests can take any form at all.

Any suggestions? For me I would imagine having no overt references to
>Kemonos being killed
>Sex
>Excessive suffering (torture, rape, starving, depression, etc)

I don't mean to force my ideas on others though. I'm just thinking out loud.
>>
>>27839166
I'd say the last one is something that should be right out. the others CAN happen (I mean it is an RPG with dangerous critters and pirates, and partying kemomimi), but the last on just flies in the face of what CATastrophe really is.
>>
>>27839166
How is sex dark? It creates new life and creates the next generation.
>>
>>27839166
You know it's retarded to mention these things not to do instead of suggesting what to do.
"The setting is intended to be lighthearted, something out of adventure movies or cartoons. bla bla" is better than "Don't kill character, don't have sex, don't torture or rape." Which already is even in mentioning it a huge turn off and completely unnecessary since those who want it will do it and those who don't want anything to do with it will be grossed out.

Also with that picture of yours I don't trust any word coming from your mouth about lack of sex.
>>
>>27839166
I think it is perfectly fine for a player's character to die saving the party if the player is leaving the group. I think Noble Sacrifices are the hallmark of Noble.

As for sex, I think that should be left to the table.

As for excessive suffering... Not even the worst of Kemonomimi would do that. Only a monster would conceive of such things.

>>27839223

>>Kemonos being killed
I personally like the idea of going with the whole "death is avoided, but you can get crippled to the point of not being able to go on Dives anymore" thing, where you can effectively kill a character off without actually killing them. So basically, everything up to and including limb loss is kosher for me, especially if cyborgs come into play, since cyborgs are always fun. That said, if the DM said they wanted a more lethal game of CATastrophe, I wouldn't object.
>>Sex
Just take all the flamewars on /tg/ regarding sex and apply to this setting. I personally don't see the need to include sex in a tabletop game, but if your group wants to go there that's your call. I don't see how sex makes a setting more dark or why you had to bring it up at all, though. You can always imply it fairly tastefully like Wakfu did if you absolutely need to go there.
>>Excessive suffering (torture, rape, starving, depression, etc)
There is really no need for any of this. No matter how dark you make CATastrophe, the moment you include rape and torture you are drastically missing the point of the setting.
>>
>>27839205
I dunno. I don't think it's dark, it just seems to not mesh with the childlike innocence of the setting. But that might just be my opinion.

>>27839223
The reason I posted this is mainly because I've seen some people complaining about quest ideas by saying they were getting too dark. But this was for very tame stuff like haunted islands, fighting monsters, etc. I thought that if we had a couple rules that everyone agreed on and gave people the freedom to do anything inside of those rules, then there wouldn't be any complaining about what is dark and what isn't.

But you make a good point. The entire setting's about freedom.

And I'm really sorry but it's surprisingly hard to find pictures of catgirls that fit in this setting and are conservative. Swimsuits seem to the be universal apparel)

Animals hate people being depressed. I've sat down somewhere feeling sad, and a cat will just come up and cuddle and purr to make me feel better.
So, if the community gets wind of a kemomi being depressed, there'll be a huge effort to cheer them up and include them and remind them of just how FUN life is, then work through their problems.
And it works, because sun, sea, and catnip.

>Death
In TAIL it's not death per se - even if you lose consciousness during a dive you get washed up somewhere else. You then have option of dropping character, reuniting them, whatever. However you can do this no more than three times. More than three and character decides that shit is too dangerous and retires. This system also allows for older characters, excanging injuries for more skills/bonds/equipment.
Death can happen but as a very rare and poignant thing - stuff that turns entire campaigns.
>sex
why it's listed as"dark"? As long as group agrees on what is comfortable for everyone present it's okay.
>suffering
I am not a fan of including this even in more gritty campaigns - we're not playing Spanish Inquisition. In CATastrophe this will be definitely out-of-place. If a campaign centers on building a village, however, food quesion is to be expected - but it's assumed that you can get bare minimum by fishing or foraging. And hey, how are you going to have "bounty hunters/hired workers on a boat" campaign without good old hunger? Yes, pic very related.

I'm sorry, but at least with me, I don't like that. I don't like forcing when a person should retire a character one way or another. It brings the mood at the table down when a player knows they're on their last life and the dice have decided to take a crap on everyone.

the way i think of it, can Washing Up or serious injury result in semi-permanent Luck decrease? I am very much against injuries decrasing main stats, but Luck is supplementary and does not deathspiral as much.
>>
>>27843471
>>27843567

Well, FATE Core has a system where you can do everything from get bonuses to rolls to creatively edit your surroundings or always make sure you have that one bit of equipment you need at the moment.

As for the washing up thing, I just use that as the gateway to a new adventure. As for serious injuries, those already have a mechanic in FATE (Consequences) that disappear over certain lengths of time.
>>
>>27843173
>FIRST Robotics
Man, those were some fun times.
>>
>>27843625
TAIL was based on FATE at first, and it still has some mechanics from there. Traits are as all-encompassing as aspects (they can describe your character's strengths, weaknesses, knowledge he posseses, quirks...). Luck pool is FATE points' cousin - used for enhancing rolls, for invocation of certain traits (not all, mind) and now for retirement. Still it seems kinda arbitrary, but at least you have your say in it.
>>
>>27843843
Again, not a fan of forced retirement. Characters in CATastrophe should seem resiliant.
>>
>>27843900
True. The characters live in a much nicer world than ours, but that doesn't mean there's no death or crippling injuries whatsoever. There's enough death to go around -- they just don't DWELL on it; they just figure it'll come when it comes, and the goal in the meantime is to get as much partying, as much adventure, and as much romance out of life as possible.

Captcha: variable tresplie
>>
>>27843900
Yeah, you're right. Just leave Washing Up as a consequence for (seemingly) fatal situation and let the player decide?
Anyway, TO THE CUTTING BOARD!
...that reminds me, Tenra Bansho has "dead box" system which gives character engaging in combat massive bonuses... but DM now has license to kill him. And it's used, because TBZ really stresses that sometimes success of the mission is much more important than character's life. Plays into heroic sacrifice trope too.
Applied in less grim fashion and not for combat this could be a nice replacement.
>>
>>27843900
>not a fan of forced retirement
That may be the case, but you have to admit its a good workaround to death for those who want a more "lethal" game. And besides, you can be resilient and still have a breaking limit. For kemomimi, it could be less "fell off a high building and am now crippled for life" and more "I just got punched by El Pistolero so I'm gonna take it easy for a while."

>>27839166
I like TDCP's idea of emergency flotation devices. If you get KO'd or run out of air, your vest inflates, and if you are in open sea it takes you up to the surface, where you are laughed at for being a failure and being floated up.You might have to roll to see if you get lost though by surfacing far off, and you might miss a session or two IC.

If death happens though, it happens. I am not going to say that a shark that wants to eat your face got bored and left you alone, but I will make sure players know when death is a thing that might happen. Mostly the dangers relate to losing shinies, supplies or getting captured in my game.
>>
>>27843900
Kemomis never die, they just don't come back from dives.
Should anyone die NOT on a dive, they're dressed up in their dive gear and buried at sea; a Last Dive that returns them to the ecosystem.
Anyone without dive gear is given an old set nobody's using and buried in it.

Oceans can dispose of anything, given time. And since the kemomi get everything from the Endless Blue, it makes sense for them to return to it in the end.

Since we're talking about arbitrary stuff; What about morale mechanics for combat? I wanted to make them reflect quick-but-not-deadly nature of combat and make one party give up when it's clear fight is going badly for them.
Then again, this ends up as "party-wide HP", which can be applied fairly well to NPC opponents, but very questionable for party.
And your average PC will fight for his shinies until he can't move.
>>
>>27843993
>For kemomimi, it could be less "fell off a high building and am now crippled for life" and more "I just got punched by El Pistolero so I'm gonna take it easy for a while."
what i was thinking when writing retirement. And restoring faith in diving after getting lots of shinies/some ancient technology that improves life in the town could be a good addition to that mechanic.
Or even a plot point for campaign - Are you badass enough to show disgruntled veteran that there are still wonders under the surface of Endless Blue?
>>
>>27843984
>Yeah, you're right. Just leave Washing Up as a consequence for (seemingly) fatal situation and let the player decide?

Best way to do it. Better to have a player tap out when they know their character's had it.

>that reminds me, Tenra Bansho has "dead box" system which gives character engaging in combat massive bonuses... but DM now has license to kill him. That seems a bit forced for a combat light game. Well, soft combat game.

>>27843993
The question is, as people should know what CATastrophe is supposed to be like, Death should be the furthest from a Kemo's mind.

In fact the "Party Tody because you may Die Tomorrow" mentality violates the real themes behind CATastrophe.
>>
>>27844103
>That seems a bit forced for a combat light game. Well, soft combat game.
In CATastrophe case this would be "screw this, i'm out" switch. How exactly "out" is again at player's discretion.
>>
I think some people have strayed from the overall concept of CATastrophe. This is practically a mission statement a Anon wrote a while back.

>What is CATastrophe?
>CATastrophe is a game of oceanic exploring and salvage, beach parties, and catpeople. It is intended to be a lighthearted, easygoing, mostly tropical setting wherein the animal eared inhabitants of a flooded earth make due with what they've got. It was created both as a break from more dramatic and serious settings as well as in an attempt to capture the sensation of coziness and wonder found in this picture, which is in fact the inspiration for this RPG.

Things aren't supposed to be a life-or-death struggle. Seeing the conversation here suddenly made me realize that everyone should be reminded that CATastrophe isn't supposed to be a grimdark grindfest. Or some "kill the monster get the loot" dungeon dive.
>>

"Kemomimi" is a truncation following a standard Japanese contraction form, and is used even by the original artist. [0] It's reasonable to modern ears. Pun not intended. Shortening that all the way to "Kemo" is probably okay in context, too.

[0] See picture at the link below, or at >>27838115 if it's still there.
http://0-media-cdn.foolz.us/ffuuka/board/tg/image/1365/78/1365786964347.jpg

>>27844033
Anything contracting "mimi" to "mi" is nails-on-a-chalkboard, though.

More to the point, dive gear is probably too expensive and useful to spend it on dressing up corpses in. ("Last Dive" as a euphemism for "death" and/or "funeral" is a good one though.)
>>
How about Death only occurs if all members of the party get knocked out of combat ie unable to fight back. This way even if one member escapes the encounter the party still lives waiting to be rescued. Like maybe the robot/badguy or monster takes them to some secret hideout or cave. Those party members are out until rescued (alternatively the adventure could proceed from there).
>>
>>27844169
It's like Washing Up situation.
Some characters do heroic sacrifice at the peak of campaign
Some just decide to settle down somewhere and become a family man.
Some win back family's respect but decide to (again) settle down.
Or just get tired of diving after one stressful trip.

Again, those are just few examples and you can disregard "heroic sacrifice" one.
>>
>>27844258
NO. All sorts of NO.
The setting for the longest time has had it where if the party gets KOed, they only end up in some sort of disaster that leads to some new misadventure. That, and having any shinies found on the dive/adventure lost as well is a good penalty.
>>
>>27844277
But again, the game mechanics are forcing a decision that should be left to roleplay. I'm glad at least with what I've been working with everything I need is in the default rules.
>>
>>27844258
I'd say no, especially since most combats begin or end up as contests "who can scare the other side the most" and wild creatures being very silly, hugtopus, for example, is either a very depressed creature or a creature that lives off body heat (depending on setting version) and most he can do is to stall your party (wasting air reserves that could be used in better ways). A few bonks is enough to drive him off.

I still like the "player decides what happens after Washing Up" the most, since CATastrophe is meant to be played by players who are on the same wavelength and it won't be hard to adjust tone.
>>
>>27844285
Thats what I ment. perhaps I shouldnt have said "death". This sort of thing should be left up to the DM's digression. But I think penalties should only apply in a TPK (or in this case Total Party Incapacitation). Charachter should get penalties for taking damage but the whole party receives a big penalty (I.E. you lose X amount of gear/items) if they are all taken out.

I agree that Character death should only happen if something REALLY REALLY bad happens.
>>
>>27844103
>Death should be the furthest from a Kemo's mind.
I never mentioned death, I mentioned the Kemomimi in question being fed up enough with the beatings its taken to take a year or two off of Diving and just relax and party it out for a while.
>>27844150
I'm gonna have to direct you back to the felt board analogy from earlier. You may not want these things and don't HAVE to include them, but others may want a little more peril in their Dives to further accentuate the happy fun times. Nobody is trying to make it a grimdark grindfest, but there will be at least a little conflict in order for there to be adventure.

Somebody likened it to Wakfu earlier and I think that's a very apt comparison. In Wakfu, there was loads of conflict and even the threat of death Hell, Grovy DID actually die at the end of Season 1, but that never stopped the setting from being cheerful and happy or the protagonists from being carefree and adventurous. Its all about balance.
>>
>>27844300
>the game mechanics are forcing a decision that should be left to roleplay
perhaps, yeah. Should sop cannibalizing other games for ideas, i guess.
And simplest decision is the best one.

What about morale in combat then?
>>
>>27838732
Maybe something like this, but the ruins are just skyscrapers and the like, any buildings that were sealed off before the ocean levels rose? I love the idea of being able to venture into an office building and follow the stairs down to the seafloor, and potentially below? Say, a sealed-off subway system? Coastal cities like New York could become vast networks of undersea ruins, ripe for plunder.
>>
>>27844420
Simple: the enemy is big, you're gonna be scared as hell. Modify rolls accordingly.

>>27844427
Doable. Remember when the Earless fell/left, they left behind lots of sealed buildings. If they went extinct, they did so to protect their legacy for the next civilization to find. If they are still out there in space, then it was left there as something to find.

Also, in general I think we might be thinking the same way but expressing things differently. Dying, Career ending injuries, those can happen. But I feel those two events should be more of a player retiring their character voluntarily. Otherwise I'm not adverse to losing fingers, losing an eye, getting cool as hell scars, or getting your tail half-amputated.

Just more stories to tell at the bar, right?
>>
>>27844478
no, morale as in >>27844056. I wanted combat at least with pirates be more about demoralizing/confusing the opponent, not about punching.
>>
>>27844513
Well, whatever your stat is for Will, occasionally in stressful situations have players/enemies roll it, with a increasing modifier as things ratchet up.
>>
>>27844539
Then again, deciding to end the dive like that could be unsatisfying. on the other hand, it provides a choice between playing safe or diving headfirst into something unknown.

Third factor is exploration in places where you aren't on timer (air). For these morale could be useful.
...maybe refluff it as tiredness?
>>
>>27844589
Yeah. Fatigue... err Tiredness sounds VERY CATastrophe.

Oh and one note, at least for my rules, air supply with scuba gear is more plot device. Taking physical stress might also represent losing air.
>>
>>27844650
partly because of my shitty grasp on english language which becomes much worse at night.

And i was thinking about air management used as timer for dives and incentive to get better gear. Of course rule 1 is that there's always enough air to get to the surface.
>>
>>27844773
Old ideas were to literally have the session on a timer, with an emergency reserve tied to the flotation devices that pop you back to the surface.

Kemomimis are immune to the bends because ears and genetics.
>>
>>27844773
Smart...

I was thinking with FATE I could have a "Air Stress" track, where players could take physical consequences to prevent losing air, or trade a box of the air track to get a FATE point as their character puts more effort into a task or while they get out by the fur of their tail, their air line got nicked and they're losing air faster.

>>27844833
Yep, that is still a thing too. And yes, Kemos don't get the bends. They can go pretty deep too. Although the super-deep places (over 3km) they would still need a diving hard-suit.
>>
Is there a genre way to handle the typical cat reaction to unexpected circumstances? Any cat owner (pardon, "staff") knows "I meant to do that."
>>
>>27845134
That should be more RP than rules, I think.

Perhaps having a devil-may-care attitude would suffice?
>>
>>27845134

>>
>>27844833
The ones working by holding their breath won't have the problem at all.
SCUBA users may, but efficient nitrogen re-uptake mechanisms in their cell walls and blood vessels could reduce the problem of the Bends.
>>
>>27845213
Now, let's not get too siency-wiency about this. Let's just say the Kemos don't get the bends. Period. Why? Earless genetic engineering.
>>
>>27845134
The way i did it, some bestial quirks transformed into minor personality traits. It sort of depends on why the setting attracts your players, and how much darkness the Ref adds to the default.

On a scale of 0 (utopia) to 10 (we're fucked), the default CATastrophe rates about a 2. Most RPGs are above 5, and many RPers aren't going to know what to do with themselves in such a light and airy setting.

Add just the right bits of Darkness and players drop into roles they know. The right bits vary from group to group, though.

I prefer the idea that earless flattened out most of the planet before the comets, and the oceans only rose far enough to leave the vast majority of ruins no more than a hundred meters below the surface. These things can explored with simple suba gear, or even a deep breath if you're good enough.

There are other ruins, though. Strange bases in the deepest chasms and plains of the ocean, protected by old robotic guardians but filled with the most precious of shinys. You would need a submarine to get to these, where sunlight never reaches and large and mysterious creatures lurk just outside the lights of your sub.

Dogs should be more Stamina than Strength.
Bears are all about lifting that weight.

In this case, with the depth resilience of the Kemos, I would say they can probably dive without protection (as in a sub or hardsuit) to about 2000m. Although past a pretty shallow depth they need drysuits as the water is COLD!

Racial buffs debuffs are a thing in my game, which is largely freeform but running under simple d6.

Lapine (Bunny) Buffs: Agility, Swim, Flee, Leg Strength
Debuffs: Bravery, Spot

Ursine (Bear) Buffs: Strength, Intimidate, Bravery, Toughness
Debuffs: Agility, Spot

Otter Buffs: 2x swim, Agility, Flee
Debuffs: Strength, Bravery

Fox Buffs: Agility, Flee, Spot, Stealth
Debuffs: Bravery, Strength

Feline (Cat) Buffs:Agility, Spot, Safe Fall, Stealth
Debuffs: Attention Span, Strength

Canine (Dog) Buffs: Strength, Spot, Swim, Bravery
Debuffs: Agility, Flee

Bird Buffs: Agility, Flee, Spot, Safe Fall
Debuffs: Attention Span, Bravery

These aren't like super balanced or well done, and I just kinda threw em together, but they seem to make things interesting thus far.

that is so absurdly unrealistic. WHY would they spend billions upon billions of dollars to get rid of high value real estate properties such as mountainsides, sea cliffs, valley and such. There would be absolutely no reason to level the land. It already costs millions of dollars to level the land enough for stuff like highways. This is even more unrealistic than waters rising hundreds of meters.

Nomad Isles are a set of two islands near each other connected by a vast bridge, forming a Medium Tech settlement. They are not far from Akadmee, so their harbor gets plenty of trade and visitors from the legendary settlement.

The northern island holds a large suburban town, beaches and a famous beachside walk full of hotels and restaurants. The southern, larger island is much more rural, covered mostly by forest and holding a small farming village within a valley and a smaller suburban town near the bridge that connects the two islands.

Yay! I'm back!

As always I'm going to just describe random lore ideas in my head and people can just ignore them if they don't sound good.

>Whalefall
A massive community several miles long, built on the bones of the largest sea monster ever discovered. The colossal bones have cave-like little This leviathan was was defeated by Max The Great, who promptly set about having the world's largest barbeque to celebrate. During this party, countless Kemonos came from near and far, and helped carve makeshift shelters and roads into the creature's bones. As time passed, this tangle of bone walkways turned into a genuine settlement. There are very few permanent residents - almost everyone here uses it as a launch point for their monster hunts. The location is conveniently located near an island and a deep-sea trench, both of which make for excellent hunting spots. Whalefall attracts a wide and eclectic assortment of adventurers.

>Max The Great
Widely considered the greatest monster hunter to have ever lived, it's grown hard over the years to separate the truth of Max's life from the legends that have built up. What is known is that Max was the captain of The Crimson Fatalis, a light caravel that specialized in monster hunting. Max and his crew were known for a string of daring wins against powerful monsters, culminating in the founding of Whalefall. There is some confusion about Max's gender. Many assume that it was a male, but some people insist that the adventurer's full name was Maxine. Either way, Max The Great and his/her crew were last seen many years ago when they left to sail across "The Doldrums", a mysterious unexplored area of sea where there is no wind and no currents. Rumor says that Max and his crew are still exploring The Doldrums, fighting even larger and more fearsome beasts.

Messed up.
>The colossal bones have cave-like little dwellings carved into them. There are enormous numbers of them, and since there is never a shortage they are freely occupied by anyone who needs to use them.

>Miscellaneous Ideas
A common sight in the Endless Blue are giant snapping turtles. These giants can have shells up to ten feet in diameter. They are predators and attack humans on sight, but luckily their extremely slow speed means that an alert Kemono should be safe. Their meat has a unique flavor and is something of an acquired taste. But their real value is their shells, which can be melted down into a translucence, flexible, plastic-y substance called tortoiseshell. This substance helps fulfill the role of plastics in modern society and allows for such novelties as record players (reverse-engineered from earless technology)

Wrong image for that.

>Armor
Amongst hunters, armor carries great significance. To some it is just practical protection, but to others it is used to display wealth or strength. For instance, a wealthy hunter might want to display their accomplishments through wearing Shiny Armor, which only gives moderate protection but it's careful construction from earless coins and artifacts makes it eye-catching. Likewise, a strong hunter might wear a vest fashioned from the hide of a great monster she has slain, to let others know of her prowess in hunting. Other, more practical armors might keep hunters streamlined and light while underwater, or give them good camouflage while stalking prey on an island.

Armor almost never covers the entire body and instead simply protects the chest. Optionally the extremities such as legs, arms, and head might have slight protection as well but this depends on the taste of each individual hunter.

Cat Nip Commons
A collection of lone sea stacks in the middle of the tropics. It being sea stacks makes it a natural fortress, easily defended should the need ever arise. A mid tech settlement most of it is carves along the sides of the stacks the stacks being connected by rope bridges and cable boats. upper decks of the stacks have docks for blimps and other airships one might bring and lower docks for sea fairing vessels. Mostly the tops are used for growing the cash crop that gives the settlement its title, most being exported to banana town and other nearby settlements for food and other goods. Because of the nature of its crop, its markets tend to be more shady in nature as well as those in it. It tends to be a natural stopping point for traders and wanderers.

Awesome! The fact that this setting is made up of isolated, somewhat self-sufficient communities as great to me. I just love hearing people's ideas for their own communities.

Someone (ie. someone who's not me) should make a list of every major community that's been mentioned so far. Not to make it official or anything (because as far as I'm concerned none of it is officially canon), but just to sort of keep it there to maybe give inspiration to anyone who's making their own game.

Quest idea!

Several communities have suddenly been introduced to ultra-pure catnip. As a result everyone is just catnapping all day and not getting anything done. Breaking Bad meets CATastrophe.
