Today, you’re going ghost hunting. Probably not for ghosts – you suspect mutants, or undiagnosed mental disorders, or maybe just the understandably potent anxiety inherent to getting blasted out of house and home and stuck in some random shelter with a bunch of strangers. Whatever the case, you have to get to the bottom of the situation to get this Layla girl out of your life and into a reasonably safe state of existence, so no the mountain of doubts you’re sporting regarding the presence of the supernatural don’t really matter all so much. You and the gang hang around for a little over an hour, waiting for Laura and occasionally picking at the honestly sort of gratuitous mega bucket you brought back from work. You note that you’ve nearly run out of chicken liver, which is annoying – you could’ve sworn there were at least two packs left earlier – but inevitable. You’ll probably have to pick up some more food after today’s outing. Good news, though, the snow works totally fine as a preservative. Nobody’s caught salmonella or some shit, which – considering that nearly half your group of squatters are already on the tail end of some pretty heavy substance abuse – would’ve been an absolute nightmare. Laura arrives back at twenty-past-twelve, breathing hard. Noriko said she’d gone for a workout or something. She sniffs the air trepidatiously and glances down at the near-empty mega bucket, her nose probably a great deal more aware than yours of all the artificial crap stewing around the Colonel’s chicken. >[ ] “Have a nice jog or whatever?” >[ ] “Hey, Laura. You’re not sure exactly how… comfortable… the others are around her. “Have a nice jog or whatever?” "It was fine." She states, flatly.“Cool. Um, we’re about to head out on, you know…”You glance at Layla.“…The excursion.” It’s not a ghost hunt, there are no ghosts. It’s a mystery hunt at best. “Wanna get something to eat first?” She nods, but veers away from the KFC, meandering into the blasted up bedroom that serves as your bigass refrigerator. She returns with a dwindling packet of liver (in the corner of your eye, Layla turns up her nose to maximum disdain level). You really were sure you had more of that stuff. Whatever. You pass her the matches and shift a little back as she lights the stove. Why are you even holding on to those? It’s not like you’re gonna be using them anytime soon. >(PART 1/2)“Man, I thought we had more than just that.” You motion towards the soon-to-be-gone scraps of liver. “I did too.” Notes Laura. You glance at Layla, possibly giving her the evils. She shakes her head and insists that she’d never go near that stuff.Weird. Well, you’ve got a payday tomorrow, so all is relatively good. You sigh. “I really hope these ‘ghosts’ are just a bunch of punk kids screwing around.” With that, you sit back to relax, hopefully reclaiming a little of the rest you lost last night. The hour passes quietly, everyone mostly just sitting around and waiting for Laura to get through her food. She proves once again that she can actually pick up the pace when necessary, and soon you’re heading out, Layla leading the way.
>(PART 2/2)The path to Sacred Tree takes you further along the scar. You make small talk at first, but soon find yourselves trudging silently through the ruins, the omnipresent silence closing in over you. You pass by a library gutted by fire from inside and out, its skeleton jutting out from the wintery grey, looking from a distance almost like lines of coal on paper than anything belonging to the real world. Department stores, restaurants, homes – you even pass under a sloping, shattered tower block, its back broken and leaning precariously into a neighbouring building, like a lover nestling close for warmth. All left, forgotten and undisturbed. For the first time you appreciate the scale of what happened here. In a little under an hour you reach the fluttering lines of yellow tape that mark the end of the ruins and the beginnings of civilization (you use the term loosely. This is New York, after all). Layla leads you out via an alley, and takes you a short way across the main road. Eventually she stops, pointing over the road at a large, crumbling old building smacked together out of orange brick and Salem nostalgia. “There.”>[ ] Try the front door.>[ ] Scope out round the back.>[ ] Get [insert] to go in the front while [insert] checks out the back.>[ ] Write in.

>[X] Scope out round the back.“Okay…” Jeez, that’s a rather imposing building. No wonder these kids think it’s haunted. It looks like it belongs somewhere in New England (which is, by percentage, the go-to place for haunted houses, apparently). “Let’s just head around the back first.” You cross the road and stroll past the front door, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. There’s a perilously thin alley stretching past he building, which you and the others have to make your way through one-by-one. You’d guess that it used to be a larger pathway till the place was built – there’s a brick wall stretching around the entire premises that probably cut into whatever was here before. You’re not tall enough to see exactly what’s behind it, but it clearly stretches on much longer than the building itself. Maybe there’s a yard back there. >[ ] Jump the wall. >[X] Ask Layla about the premises. You’re not going blind into the creepy house full of scared children. You shuffle awkwardly around Laura, the scarcity of space forcing you to suck in your stomach a little, and squat down to Layla’s level. She’s glancing nervously at the top of the wall, occasionally rubbing her arms. She does that quite a bit – you guess it’s a nerves thing. “So, uh, how do we get in?” You whisper. Just in case. “There’s a garden in the back. We have gardening classes there, grow our own food and stuff. It’s supposed to therapeutic or something.” Huh. How new-age. And possibly stingy. “There’s a door leading in to the cape room, and I guess the kitchen too. What’s the time?” You look at your watch. “Twenty-past one.” She sort of sneers and cringes at the same time. “Everyone should be having lunch in the hall right now. Both the back doors’ll be locked.” “Are the doors made of wood?” Asks Kevin, leaning across. You know what’s pretty cool? You’re pretty sure you can jump higher now. A week ago you’d have required a run up – or at least a short stretch beforehand – to scale the wall standing between you and your mission, but now you scamper up to the top with almost practiced ease. You perch momentarily at the top, surveying the orphanage grounds. Layla was speaking truly – there’s a small yard that leads off into a collection of stubby, cultivated plots, currently drowned in frost and snow. An old, wooden door stands at the back of the main building, and you bet the other one is round the side somewhere. Luckily there’s no windows within easy spotting-distance of you, save those on the second floor, and those rooms look thoroughly empty. You extend your hand to your fellows. “Uh, you guys don’t mind if just Kevin comes with for now? I was kinda hoping someone could… make a noise, or something… if there’s anything we should know about outside.” Layla nods vigorously. “I’m good.” “What do we do if someone spots her?” Asks Noriko, motioning toward Layla. You shrug. “I dunno, something. Just… don’t electrocute them unless absolutely necessary.” You can’t believe you have to say that. You should never have to say that. Electrocution should always be the last possible resort – it should just be a given. “Laura?” “It’s tactically sound.” She states. “We will activate a pair of car alarms if anything goes wrong.” “Good thinking. Kev?” You reach out to help him up, making sure to grab his gloves and absolutely no part of his bare skin. He struggles a little, but you find him surprisingly light, and soon you’re jumping down into the yard. You make your way to the back door, staying low. Kevin pads out in front and slips off one of his gloves, reaching out to place a single finger on the wood surrounding the metal lock… >Perception check!>DC14 >+3 modifier!

Something creaks, dragging on and growing steadily louder, until– Without explanation, you shove Kevin round the corner, your finger snapping up to your lips in a clear demand that all noise cease immediately. He stares at you in baffled silence as you strain your ears. On the far side of the building, a door swings open, and a pair of heavy feet trudge out into the snow. A cavalcade of unseemly, greasy scents – fish oils, potato mash, tomatoes, all stirred up and fermented in god-knows-what-else – drifts by and you hear something large and metallic swing open. There is a heavy thud – loud enough for Kevin to hear it – and the footsteps recede back into the building. Sweet Jesus. “Fuck.” Proclaims Kevin. “Fucking fuck, fuck.” “Indeed.” You agree. “That was kinda close. Sorry about the manhandling.” “It’s cool.” He ventures quietly out and retakes his position by the door. “It’s a lot better than being on the child protection list or whatever.” Urgh, you hadn’t considered that. Man you don’t wanna be a hobo and a reputed sweetie-man. You watch in silence as Kevin traces a thin line of decay around the lock. Eventually, the whole thing just comes loose and slips out, the door hinging slightly open at the breeze’s touch. Your companion pulls of trademark gloves back on and edges the door open. Awaiting you is a small, dank room leading out into a corridor. The front of the building is visible at the end, along with a set of stairs leading up. You push around it, stretching out, seeping through the pores of the building. Wind howls outside. Old wood groans incessantly, warping and shifting in barely-perceptible, minute ways. Voices cut through the din. Little squawks at first, but it build and it builds till you’re dealing with a clamour of tiny voices. It’s coming from the far side of the building, beyond the stairs. There must be a doorway nestled behind the stairwell, just out of sight, probably leading into the hall Layla mentioned. You draw your senses back and shift them upwards. You get rats scurrying and windows clattering occasionally as the breeze brushes over them. And then – one, one and two – two sets of footsteps, not directly above but a bit further along the building. Light, but not too light. You open your eyes. Can’t you… I dunno.. bring me in, or something?” “I’m pretty sure I can’t. Hold on.” You grab his hand, feeling him start slightly. Just two layers of gloves separate you and the Touch of Death. “Great.” Mumbles Kevin, as you lead him towards the stairs. He has to press himself close to the stairwell to avoid the open doorway just off to the side, and a minute of painstaking, awkward handholding later you’re at the bottom of the stairs, glancing up. What’s the term for this kind of house? Edwardian? Georgian? Something like that. It’s got lots of old wood and fancy bannisters and stuff, though most of it seems to have seen far better days. And the green wallpaper if honestly kinda queaze-inducing. There’s a wide landing upstairs with a set of doors on one side and a corridor stretching out back into the house. >[X] Nudge the door open.Well, what else are you gonna do?You reach out tentatively and – ever so lightly – push the door inwards. It creaks unexpectedly loudly, sending a small start up your spine, and inches steadily open. You don’t have time to enter – almost immediately, a small, mousy woman in her mid-twenties crowds the doorway, forcing you to step back as quietly as you can. For a moment you think she’s actually staring straight at you, but as it happens, she’s staring straight THROUGH you, and soon glances off down the landing. “Daniel?” The silence yields no answer. “…Jason? Is that you?” Shifting awkwardly, you crane your neck around her. The room beyond is a stark, empty space that you’d generally have pegged as a spare room. Square in the middle, however, two thoroughly out-of-place beds house a pair of children perhaps a year or two younger than Layla. One boy, one girl, breathing shallowly and surrounded by machines that you vaguely associate with hospital dramas. >Perception check>DC14>+1 modifier

personally, I think (depending on how many x points we get), we should boost Invisibility to hide kevin easier and make leaving easier.
>>27831393I think next we need to do enhanced senses.
>>27831393Pretty sure we aren't going to get 2 X-points for this session, so invisibling Kevin on the way out just isn't going to happen.

Also, there’s a guy standing right behind them. There’s a guy standing right behind them. There’s a guy– You stumble back, very nearly yelping in surprise. Had there not been a row of bannisters behind you, you’d have thrown yourself straight off the landing. You clamp your hands over your mouth and freeze up. The woman perks up at the sudden noise and leans further out. Her hand comes to rest on the bannister – like, like not even a meter from you. She glances down the corridor again and tuts quietly to herself. “If that is you… you know you’re not allowed in here.” She shakes her head and turns to head back into the room. You glance past her. There’s nobody there – just the two kids, sleeping in deafening, cold silence. But you could’ve sworn there was. You could have sworn that there was a guy right there. And you were sure that he was looking straight at you. ------------------------------------------------------------->THREAD 16: END>Congratulations! You nearly shat your invisible pants! >Congratulations! You broke into an orphanage!>Congratulations! You’ve earned an X-Point! X-points can be used to purchase new mutations or upgrade existing ones! Homeless Mutant Quest is likely to return on Monday. Till then, stay updated via twitter: https://twitter.com/CrustyJayAs usual, I’ll be hanging around for a bit.
>>27831480Maybe we were a bit too hard on Layla.
>>27831480Sweet! Enhance those senses so we can see if this guy's real (or at least giving off body heat)!
There are three types of powers you can purchase in Homeless Mutant Quest! CORE POWERS, which are the bread and butter of your powerset, SECONDARY POWERS, which are additional abilities or powers from other sets that are also appropriate to yours, and TERTIARY POWERS, which are powers only tangentially related to yours. All can be purchased and levelled, but Tertiary Powers can never be maxed out. Powers have five levels… except when they don’t.The powers currently available to you are:CORE POWERS: >Invisibility Lvl4>Enhanced Senses Lvl3SECONDARY POWERS: >Enhanced Agility Lvl2>Claws & Fangs Lvl2>Adhesive Touch Lvl1>Pheromone Manipulation Lvl1>Envenomed Touch Lvl1>Paralytic Touch Lvl1 >Vampiric Touch Lvl1 >Electrostatic Touch Lvl2>Light Armour (scales) Lvl1>Phasing Lvl1TERTIARY POWERS: >Enhanced Strength Lvl2>Healing Factor Lvl2>Medium Armour (carapace) Lvl1You have two points to spend. First level powers cost one point, second level powers cost two, and so on. The exceptions are your Core Powers, which cost one less than usual.

Alright, voting closed. Tallyan.
>>27831758I'm not sure you even need to bother tallying.
>>27831750You guys have been trying since the first thread, it was agreed to rush phasing if we ever save up 3 x points since level 1 phasing is shit.

>>27831769i doubt the walls in a orphanage are very thick
>>27831769If we are gonna spend points, we will only consider Phasing or Pheromone Manipulation if we have 3 X-Points.
>>27831750wellWe are the second most popular option after senses. With senses maxed out, we can have victoryright guyshahahahhahahahahahahhahahahaha.....captcha says figeaba victory, so maybe if I take the name figeaba we may win some day?
>>27831750get rekdtTo be fair, you will have more success if you don't try to shoehorn something else with it.Then again, you could try shoehorning phasing in some sort of combo, capitalizing on the wants and needs of a particular session. That's how claws got picked up, after all.
>>27831767Well, you know. I try to be polite and stuff.Anyhow, Enhanced Senses takes it. Congrats, you Yautja now.

>>27831833Hah, no, they're not Japanese. One looks to be about nine, the other ten or eleven. The girl has red hair and the guy has brown. They're both pretty pale. You can't see their eyes due to them being asleep or something.
>>27831842But it lowers our agility. I would think higher level LA would be better a use than only level 1 Carapace?
>>27831810She's impervious to kinetic damage. We already have a better option anyway, Tazer hands.Vampiric Touch would have been a better choice
>>27831866>>27831866Just thought the same thing.
>>27831864LA and MA levels are basically how much of it covers you.
>>27831864its only a -1 agility bonus that will probably remove the negative modifier at higher levels
>>27831864It only hinders agility and stealth while it's on. It'd be useful if we botch up stealth.
>>27831864Only when active, I'd suppose. At higher levels, it must be much more responsive.Imagine the kind of bullshit we could pull with Medium Armor and JJ Sense.
>>27831866No she isn't.Blunt still works on her, she can't be cut.
>>27831897>pastebin.com/zFvxDsKi>Medium armour is for protection and will cause a penalty to agility, and above a certain level it provides nearly zero benefits.
>>27831905I remember around the begining, about how we had gotten powers and you did a special little text of how our character reacted, but i remember now that you do it as part of the next threads instead.(i wonder why i remembered that now)
>>27831905hey crusty can you explain the difference between LA and MA and what the levels do to them exactly. The pasebin is not that clear.
>>27831930Since when does blunt work on her? Her skin can't be bent out of shape, period. Doesn't that mean any blunt damage would be diffused through her skin on contact, instead of being directly focused on the point of contact?
>>27831972LA didn't get better past a certain point, just covers more.MA does.
>>27831480You tease, you just HAD to drop this kind of major spoiler. When's the next thread gonna be?
>>27831972>>27831989They all get better as they go on.But they have limits. Basically, medium armour is never going to be able to stop a cruise missile from burning you into shit all. Light armour will never stop a 50 cal from doing you serious injury. Both they both get better at stopping the things they CAN stop as you go up levels. Also, just a note, don't expect the power chart to stay the same forever. Don't expect your current powerset to stay exactly as it is, either. The combination in which you buy abilities will influence future stuff.
>>27831986Since fucking Crusty said it did.The only thing I've ever seen Kimura's abilities explained was that she couldn't be cut. She's still got squishy insides, she can still be hurt with blunt.Which we can do while shocking the fuck out of her.
>>27832030>you just HAD to drop this kind of major spoiler.Mind explaining it for a guy who's not that into comics (but is trying to get into them)?>>27832042>Also, just a note, don't expect the power chart to stay the same forever. Don't expect your current powerset to stay exactly as it is, either. The combination in which you buy abilities will influence future stuff.FUCK YEAH
>>27832042>claws+carapace>spiked knuckles/bladed knuckles
>>27831986Her skin massively mitigates blunt trauma. She's not solid throughout, though, so enough force can hurt her, much in the same way that enough force can hurt an armoured even if you can't break the armour itself.Gathering that kind of force is not easy, of course. Kimura has survived some pretty intense shit.
>>27832083>armoured knightGuh I am retarded.
>>27832083i need a gif of raiden punching armstrongthat is exactly how our fight will go
>>27832083We should just piggyback on her and fry her brains.Or not be a dick, and only provide support for when X-23 faces her. It's HER Nemesis, after all.
>>27832096Surely Creeper will undo the lock on his superior nippon sword just in time for the finale. After all, it has to be this way.
>>27832042>Expect the power chart to start changing in response to what you've been buying.Excellent.
>>27832161That's stupid, she was made with laura being her punching bag in mind, just fucking kill her.
>>27832161It's not her Nemesis, it's her boogeyman made manifest. There's a difference.
>>27832209In real life.but we're comic book.
>>27832231No, we're quest, fuck comic book/manga rules, they are retarded. We're not just going to be Laura's fucking cheerleader.
>>27832231And we're the protagonist. That all but guarantees that Laura can't defeat her, but we can.
Thread archived. Also, I'm pretty sure Laura wouldn't mind someone else murdering Kimura. Hell, in canon she basically ordered Hellion to do it, IIRC.
>>27832399Sounds about right. That said, I for one have no problem with a permanent solution to the Kimura problem.
>>27832161Or you know, something like this happens. She comes to buy a newspaper from us and recognizes our voice. Engage in horribly onesided battle (I presume we've managed to get a vampiric touch or something at this point.)Hide the bodyGo homeLaura: "You smell of Kimura"JJ: "I guess I do smell a bit corpsy."
>>27832433>Hide the bodyNo. This is one of those antagonists that you irrevocably kill and see rendered unto ash, or you see her again in perfect health and deadlier than ever in a month's time. If we take Kimura out, we take her out for good.
>>27832532Yea, no hiding the body, we should totally take the corpse to our hideout and have Noriko fry it until ashes start pouring out of her orifices.
>>27832623Then we wear her skin as a coat, buffalo bill style.Hey, it's uncuttable, that's like, some kinda Nemeian Lion shit.
So, when's the next thread gonna be?
>>27832661EAT HER HEART WEAR HER SKIN
>>27832712Probably Monday. See the end of thread post.
