Let's see... news.

I got nothing, haha!

Archives here:
https://archive.foolz.us/tg/search/subject/Strikers%20%2789%20Quest/

and here:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

with a pastebin primer of sorts here:

For if you feel like jumping in without dinking around with the archives in their entirety.

“So what's going on, boss?” You ask, following Ice back up towards the Captain's office. “Seems like We were up here once today.”

She pauses, hesitating for a second. “That greyhound had some things on it for us. And someone who'd like to meet Samantha... and you.”

You don't particularly care for the way she said that.

“I assume, then, that I'm not going to be thrilled with this individual?” You say, flatly. “I mean, I only just found out that my cousin is here as the twin's boytoy, and I'm still kinda coming to grips with that. Oh, not to mention we just found out there's compelling evidence that the martians are planning a round two and Stalin plans to help them out. At this point more bad news is just-”

“We get it, Frank.” Slider says, interrupting you. “You haven't had the best day ever. Want me to kiss it and make it better?”

You're about to answer when Ice shakes her head.

“There's a matron here, Frank. She wants to talk to you and Samantha about... well, everything you two do in a jet.” She says. “And... she wants you both to be assigned to Annapolis. She wants you two to work with the academy there to explore you two's... talent, I guess, and see if maybe we've been overlooking something for, well... ever.”

You laugh, and it causes Ice to stop. “What? What did I say that was funny? Frank, she's a matron, she has a lot of pull. And the captain isn't against it, she thinks Samantha is holding herself back from her full potential by flying with you like she does.”

You shake your head. “It's just the idea that maybe Merlin and I are the evidence of the all-mighty witch community having been wrong for however long. Thousands of years of recorded history in your archives, and there's not a single case like this?”

“Not one.” Ice says, sounding quite sure of that. “And it's causing a lot of people in high places to start taking notice. What if we've been overlooking this?”

“And what if it's unique to Merlin and I?” You ask. “What would they do then?”

Ice shrugs. “I don't know. Probably return you to the fleet, but that'd be years down the road. This kind of thing is so new no one really knows how to even classify it, we don't know how look for it in witches, and we certainly can't even begin to understand how to look for it in males. Understanding the male side has come a long way since the war, but it's still in it's infancy compared to our grasp on our own magic.”

You look down at Merlin, who's looking up at Ice, a peculiar glint in her eyes.

“I-I'm not going back.” She says, quietly. “I-I'm finally good at something and now they're saying I'm not good enough again? N-No. I won't go back.”

Ice shakes her head. “Samantha....”

Does anything need to change? It's Sci-fi. Maybe there's more females in it but beyond that I don't think much change would happen. The real question is Fantasy stories, how would those change in a world were magic is a thing?

[x] Let her finish
For one, blowing up at Ice does no good when it's not even her call.
Second, we really need to stop coddling Merlin like this. We represent a possible paradigm shift in Witch deployment and Witch-Male interaction. She's not being sent back because she's not good enough, she's being sent back because she's too good.

And it's not Ice's call, since the Captain of the carrier we're on is siding with the Matron.

The problem is that half of our strength is tied into merlin. If the matron wants to observe she can do it on the carrier.

>>
>>27886324
She's not bringing this up of her own volition, dude. It's the Matron. We can be frustrated, but we can't just get mad at the messenger.
>>

We're both being sent back, not just Merlin.

Will you learn to fucking read?
The Matron thinks the exact fucking opposite, that she and the other academic witches want to study the feedback loop that Frank and Merlin have that supercharges Merlin's magic reserves.
They recognize that Merlin is only so good because she's paired with Frank , and that's why they want us both to go back to a research facility/Academy for analysis. You know, since being able to supercharge Witches with another Martian Invasion imminent being something of a priority.

>>
>>27886482
The captain hasn't ordered this. Ice only said she wasn't against it. Going back to Annapolis will mean that all the time we spent in R&D for that plane will have been wasted.

[x] Interrupt her - “You heard her. We're not interested.”

"Not gonna happen, Ice and you knew it from the very beginning."

We don't have the time to go dick around in Neverland. We have Martian ass to kick.
>>
>>27886482
Part of the reason this will go nowhere is because nobody wants to run a fucking quest in a research academy.

The other part is it will take us away from the girls.

You will never get enough people to vote to go, no matter what you say.
>>
>>27886458
They need testing equipment and researchers for figuring out what is even going on, let alone how we're doing it.
That's like keeping a captured tank or plane on the frontlines instead of sending it back to research facilities to reverse-engineer its technology; it's the far worse method.

>>

>>
>>27885908
>[] Interrupt her - “You heard her. We're not leaving, If she wants to study us she can do it here.”
>>
>>27886482
It's still a dumb idea to take us off the boat, because there's likely no way for them to immediately replicate the results we're getting as a team.

Also, consider the tactical implications here. Are they going to be able to produce enough 'viable partners' for an emergency crash program to get more Fronk/Merlin style steelwings up and running? Witches have been flying in modern combat for decades at this point, the study would take us off the boat, away from the frontline, where we are guaranteed to do some good.

I'm still saying it's best to hear Ice out because she's obviously under pressure too. Do you really think SHE wants Frank off the boat at this point? Any of the witches?
>>
>>27885908
>[] Interrupt her - “You heard her. We're not leaving, If she wants to study us she can do it here.”

Exactly how many times do we have to repeat this?
>>
>>27886541
So when the Martian attack comes, you want there to be no way for any other Witch-Gnome combo to work, rather than helping to find other potential matchups. That sounds like you're too enamored with our uniqueness, and don't want any others to come close.

>>

Of course it's going to take years at this rate. We never cooperate with anyone when it comes to exploring our gnome magic or attempting to replicate or even understand the feedback mechanism we have with Merlin.

>>
>>27886681
It'll take years regardless of our cooperation.
We don't have years while there's a world war on.
>>
I dunno, COULD we get the matrons out here watching us instead of keeping us in a lab?

And something to tell Ice: "We had that discussion a thousand times already. And even if a matron tells you to bring it up, the answer won't change."
>>
>>27886704
Current timeframe indicates the war will be long over by the time any useful results are gained.

Also, if we get pulled from the front, Konstantina's probably going to start ripping our people's faces off.
>>
>>27886704
No, it won't. Said war effort will come to a head in MONTHS! Not years, MONTHS! Get it through your thick skulls!
>>

>>27886740
>"We had that discussion a thousand times already. And even if a matron tells you to bring it up, the answer won't change."
This so much.
>>
>>27886636
There's no guarantee that this will work, though. Our circumstances HAVE been unique throughout this whole thing. AFAIK there's no other duo like us in the entire US military, and Merlin's situation has already been demonstrably unique: she can't use modern strikers because of her power output being so high. Maverick drained herself in a second inside the Wyvern because of Merlin's settings.

She's basically a natural Stalinka, probably more powerful if I'm guessing correctly. There's just no strikers she can use in the US inventory.

ALL THAT BEING SAID: I'd prefer staying on the boat. I'd also prefer to not pop off on Ice, Slider or anyone else at this point, since it solves nothing. If there IS anyone we tell to get lost, it ought to be the Matron herself. If she wants to study Frank and Merlin so badly, the best time will be when we're doing our thing in actual combat conditions, where shit gets so crazy Merlin and Frank NATURALLY HOLD THEIR SUPER JET TOGETHER. You can't recreate that shit in a controlled environment no matter how much you'd want to.
>>
>>27885880

I agree sort of, this shit is just building on and on. Eventually we will blown up, we need a way to vent and killing commies can't be the only way nor a healthy way. Since going off on someone is a no go then what do you propose?

Professionalism? We can tell someone no, professionally. I thought Frank was supposed to be better than "PUNT CAPTAN IN CUNT LOL"

I'd tell Ice: "Look. We aren't leaving without damned good reason. We'll hear them out, we're obligated to. You're obligated to let us know what's going on, and that's fine. I get that."

"If they want us off the boat, they have to convince us, but you probably already know our answer. Let's go see this Matron."

[x] Interrupt her - “You heard her. We're not interested.”

You cut her off, wrapping one arm protectively around Merlin's shoulder. “You heard her, boss. We're not interested. Tell your matron if they want to study us, they can send a team to the front.”

Ice sighs, sounding frustrated and... sad? You're not sure, honestly.

“Look.” She says, her shoulders slumping briefly. “This wasn't my idea. I'd stopped asking when we were in California. This was someone else. Someone with a lot more pull than me, apparently. I don't know who. But I can't just go in there and tell her they both refuse to talk to her because she made what she probably thinks is an amazing offer, ok?”

The look on her face kills your anger before it can build up.

“Sorry, boss.” You say, looking down at Merlin again. “Didn't mean to snap at you.”

“No it's- it's not that. I would have kind of deserved it anyway, and besides, you probably thought she was here because of me. I guess she is in a way, if I hadn't been writing to them while we were at mirimar, she probably wouldn't have come.” She says. “But you have to tell her yourself, I can't just deliver the message, especially right now. If she'd have shown up a few hours later...”

You nod, understanding- if you've got the fleet CAP flight in the morning, you'd be on crew rest, such as it is, and relatively safe. Of course, this matron might have just come down to quarters anyway, but either way.

>>
“Look, Frank.” She says. “This is a Matron. She's not going to just take no for an answer. If she's with Annapolis she's probably got some pull.” She ventures a weak smile.

“Then again, I'm willing to bet admiral Nixon has a hell of a lot more pull.” She adds. “Plus, there's still me. Witch forces act, remember? You're mine, pilot. And I don't exactly plan to give you up to some old cunt that easily.”

You grin. “That sounds almost dangerously lewd, there, Ice. Might want to get that checked.”

Ice, for her part, blushes and Slider whoops with laughter, having to lean against the bulkhead as she laughs, holding her arms around her sides.

“C'mon Raich, it wasn't that funny.” Ice mumbles.

“Y-ou should see your FACE-” Slider gasps, around bouts of laughter. Even Merlin giggles.

Your little group enters the Captain's office again- you note that, wherever Katya is, it isn't here, though some of her mail remains on the table in front of the couch. Well, couch, settee, whatever the hell it is- your mom would correct you if you called it a couch, you think, but she's not here.

The captain is talking with an older witch- her hair shot through with gray. She doesn't look familiar, but then again, you think, she shouldn't look familiar. Ice and Slider enter after you and Merlin.

You try to gauge Merlin's reaction to just seeing the matron, but, if she has one, she keeps it well hidden. Kid would be dangerous at poker, you think. Well, probably not, but it's still one hell of a poker face.

“Lieutenant commander Bishop! Lieutenant Wells!” The matron says, setting down her tea. “It's a pleasure to meet you both! Come, have a seat.” She indicates one of the nearby chairs.

[x] Go sit down- no point in being rude.

You nod, taking a seat in one of the chairs that usually sit around the table, noting that Merlin elects to stand near you, instead of sitting.

“So, I imagine that Tabitha here told you why I've flown all the way out to the north sea?” The Matron asks. “Oh, I'm sorry, where are my manners. My name is Ester Longstreet, I'm the headmistress at the witch deck at Annapolis naval academy. Your mother flew off the Oriskany in southeast asia, didn't she?”

You nod, not wanting to interrupt.

She smiles. “I thought so. I flew with that wing shortly after she went home, never met her myself though. Heard a lot about her. I'll have to make a social call sometime.” She laughs.

You're not quite sure what to make of this matron, honestly. She doesn't act like she's a headmistress or whatever, you think, but then again, you have no idea what a headmistress is supposed to act like.

“Anyway, I'm sure Tabitha or Rachel told you why I flew all the way out here. I'd like for you and young miss Wells to come back to the states. We've received quite a few inquiries about you two, and to tell you the truth, we're not quite sure what to think. This is new ground for all of us, and we think it would be best for you two to come back and help us understand your talent, rather than continue to risk yourselves on the front.”

I wouldn't use the "shorthanded" arguement against the matron for one specific reason: they'll just transfer some other "qualified" steelwing in our place and call it square, at least they'll try to.
>>
>>27889005

I don't think she can do that though. This is an integrated unit, so Ice would have to approve both transferring us out and bringing someone else in, and there are a lot of logical arguments about not bringing in another steelwing crew.

But since this is a matron, it's more likely she'd suggest a couple of witches to be transferred into to replace us.

[x] “We appreciate the offer, ma'am, but our place is here.”

You smile, trying to feign sadness at having to reject her offer. “We appreciate it, ma'am, but our place is here.”

You can see her smile falter somewhat at your response. “I see. Young man, do you realise how important this work could be? Think about it- there may be dozens, hundreds of young people like yourself and miss Wells that simply get passed over because we can't recognize them for what they are. “

“You mean like how you passed over me when I couldn't fly strikers?” Merlin asks, her voice low, but heated. Your head snaps around involuntarily at the sound- you've never, ever heard her speak to anyone like that.

Matron Longstreet, clearly, wasn't expecting that either. “Well, at the time, we had no idea-”

“Of course not. You said this was new, didn't you? But instead of giving me a chance, instead of letting me try it my way, you told me I’d never fly. That something was wrong with me, and that you couldn't help me. And now that I'm finally good enough and my friends think I'm useful, you want me to come back. I won't and no one, not even Frank, can make me.” Merlin says, cutting her off.

“Young lady, we deal with dozens of young witches a year. Sometimes these things happen.” The matron responds. “Your case was one of the unfortunate ones, yes, but if you'll come back, we could prevent it from ever happening again.”

“I don't care.” Merlin says, flatly. “Even if you get Frank to agree, I won't. I'm never going back.”

As much as they'll try and pitch that being able to build witch-planes or whatever will hell the war effort, we have no guarantee of any R&D anytime soon. We'd be much more effective as a freelancer than as a test pilot.

Also, I doubt we'd actually resign, since it's been previously established that just about everyone in the squadron would also resign, and that's a major bomb for anyone in multiple ways. MAD worked for a while, so I'm pretty sure it'd work here.

It's a theoretical reaction to a Matron theoretically playing politics to get what she wants. They want to pull Frank and Merlin from frontline combat to be test subjects. Frank and Merlin don't want to be test subjects. Frank and Merlin have a right to decline being test subjects. If the Matrons were to try pulling one of the most effective squadrons out of the war to try to coerce Frank and Merlin into a role that they don't want to play and had already refused, Frank would have a right to threaten to resign in protest.

"Ma'am, if it helps, you could look into setting up more integrated squadrons, in particular with witches flying alongside of pilots. Merlin and myself became this way through combat and training together. There's extensive material available to peruse, I don't believe we have to be a part of it."

"Besides, the lady doesn't wanna go, and I'm not one to force her."

>"Merlin is my partner. She's the eyes in the back of my head, and when she says something I listen. Madam, you have your answer, we are not going back to Annapolis. I would however be amenable to you leaving a team to study us on the front."

She needs to get this out of her system, and if she does say something she shouldn't... well, she can learn something from that, I reckon.

I really would like to see what else she has to say.

I'm thinking that Merlin being out in the front in the most effective combat team here is an affront to them.

They dissed her, said she'll never be anything more and yet there she is.

Yeah, but I don't know what merlin would do without Frank to ride shotgun with. She probably would not switch to flying strikers like regular. Not sure what Matrons could really do.

Actually, shit, that sounds like a serious conversation we should have with Merlin sometime. I assume Frank is gonna fly until they make him stop, and then he's gonna fly some more, but I wonder what Merlin's ideas are of her long-term career?

The moment the matron turns to us to start trying to win us over cut her off and tell her that we decided before we even walked in the room that Merlin's decision is ours and there isn't shit anyone can do to change that. Preferably with a smarmy smirk too.

The sisterhood needs to know that they fucked up, it's not like they can just cut-off the new type of super witch because she's getting a little payback.

Maybe. But I doubt most of her students have PTSD, have seen major combat repeatedly and can only fly because of a hero that saved them from the grumpy people who never gave them a chance.
>>
>>27889850
I was thinking we could make a day out of it. Get some shore leave, murder some bottles or break something breakable, hit up an arcade, buy souvenirs for everyone, finish with a big dinner and cake.

Maybe an older brotherly talk during the actual rage-venting to make sure she can express her problems and cope properly.

>>

>>
>>27890030

>>
>>27889996
>>27890002
>>27890030

>insubordination
Nigga what?

A headmistress can't tell us to do shit, which is why she's asking and if she's asking, there's nothing wrong with telling her to fuck off.
>>
>>27890074
If she's at Annapolis, she's Navy. And if she's Navy, she's a higher rank than Merlin. That's enough for insubordination.

You can't just mouth off to superior officers because they're not in your chain of command.
>>
>>27890101

>>

>>
>>27890118

>>
>>27890160

>>
>>27890119
but what if it isn't? call me paranoid, but with Ghost, we can never be sure. anyway, if we took the view of what we learned with Putien, and THIS is what the brass does to us when the witches and men on the ground need us the most, i would have guilt trips over the good men we could have saved just so the matron could pull CYA move over Merlin. it leaves a bad taste in my mouth as anon poster.

Just because shes seen it before doesn't mean its AOK to do it to her.

Are you going to chalk it up to battle stress? Give her a reason to pull Merlin from the frontline back to the states?
>>
She wasn't introduced with a rank, ghost hasn't said she's in uniform and Merlin hasn't actually insulted her, even indirectly. We're golden.

>WAAA PISSING HER OFF MAKING ENEMIES
The old wise witch doesn't realize how she's screwed Merlin over and doesn't realize how that she's asking for looks? Bullshit, if she walks away from this angry she's a bigger child than Merlin is.
>>
>>27890285

I think you (and other people) are really overestimating how much ability this lady has to pull us around. If she could force the issue, she probably would have phrased things a little stronger than asking us nicely (especially given how we've refused the offer every time).

And even if she can force the issue, she can't force the issue. Because that means that the squadron will pull the nuclear option. Politically, it's probably not good for us, but we have bigger fish to fry than to worry about this coming back to bite us later.
>>

[x] Stop Merlin before she gets carried away and says something she'll really regret.

While you'd like to let Merlin go- that much pent up rage cannot be good for her- now is neither the time or the place to do it.

You put a hand on her shoulder. “Merlin.” You say, feeling the tension melt out of her. “Not now, ok? We'll discuss it later.”

She turns her head to look at you, hesitating before she nods. “O-ok Frank. I Just- I'm sorry. Can I leave?”

You look at the captain, who's been quiet the entire time. She nods curtly.

“Yeah.” You say, nodding. “Go ahead. I'll see you back at quarters.”

“C'mon kiddo.” Slider says, from near the door. “Let's go get some ice cream. I know where the twins are keeping a stash.”

The two of them leave, with Ice occupying Merlin's former seat next to you.

“Well, I never... is she usually like that?” The matron says, after the hatch closes.

“No ma'am.” Ice responds, before you can. “But, frankly, I'm not inclined to sign off on any transfer she feels that strongly against.”

“Tabitha, honey, you always thought with your heart, not your head. This could be as big for us as the magical engine was. Bigger, even. Think about it! How long have we been overlooking this?” Longstreet says, leaning forward. “How many people like mister Bishop here are there? How many girls like Samantha?”

Ice shakes her head. “It doesn't matter. I won't sign the order.”

Longstreet leans back in her chair. “I could open up the archives on your grandparents.” She says.

Ice hesitates. “That's-”

“Think about it, Tabitha. You'd finally be able to find out who you are. Certainly we're the last place with any records of it.”

>>
From behind you, Katya snorts. “I am beginning to think maybe soviet matrons were not so bad. With them, at least there was none of this.” She says, walking up to stand beside Ice.

“Who-”

“Katya Litvyak.” Katya responds. “I came to get personal mail I left here when you came in. Comrade Ice and I may not always agree, but she had confessed to me how important that search is to her.”

You turn to look at her, watching the predatory smile spread across her lips. “I have done some asking, now that my friend has helped me contact others of my old squadron. There are records of a witch that fits what she knows of her grandmother in the Stalingrad archives.”

“Oh, really?” Longstreet responds. “And I suppose you'll just give this information to her? And it will be better than the sealed chest from her grandfather? And you suppose that we'll just allow you to talk to your friends in a hostile country?”

Katya shrugs. “Do not make the mistake of believing you can threaten me, matron. I am still a Russian Witch, and still answer to Russian Matrons, not American ones. And yes, I believe you will, since your office of naval intelligence has been pouring over my mail and believes it to be an important part of building a defense against the coming storm.” She points at the letters on the desk. “They have asked to read those, and I have agreed. It is important to work with the people that hold all the cards, yes?”

[x] “We're done here. Captain, permission to leave?”

You've gotten angry before. You've been so furious you can't even see straight before. You grew up with two brothers and a sister, of course you've been incandescently pissed off before.

This goes beyond that. That was not one, but three, emotional cheap shots taken in a span of maybe a minute, tops. You shoot so far past angry so fast that it's like a sudden chill in the room-for a second, you almost thought it was Ice, but you don't see those ears of hers, or that tail, so it probably isn't.

“Ma'am, if the first emotional cheap shot didn't take, you damn sure don't try for a second or third. Didn't air combat teach you anything? You don't keep trying the shit that doesn't get you anywhere.” You say, working to keep your voice level, if angry. “And on that note, what you said has killed any chance of me reconsidering or agreeing post-war. I don't play nice with people who screw with my squadron.”

Abruptly you stand up, snapping to attention and pivoting to look at a point an inch or so over the captain's head- not registering the outraged look on her face. “Captain, permission to leave?”

She shakes her head. “Denied. Sit down, Lieutenant commander.”

US Constitution says "You get guns!" - To say "No, you don't get guns" runs directly contrary to that, and to heavily regulate guns, and generally inhibit a person's ability to have guns through red tape, expensive ammo, etc. runs directly contrary to the intent and spirit of that.

>>27890989
>if you are right or wrong, for what ever reason, you are right.

It's that spirit that is so destructive to co-operative government. In any given arguement, you MUST recognize the possibility that you are wrong. If both people involved don't think there's the slightest chance that they're wrong, or are unwilling to admit that?

It's just two people shouting at each other.
>>
>>27891027
We never did find out her reaction to that...
>>
You do so, getting angrier- as if that's possible- until she speaks again. “Matron Longstreet, I believe you've overstayed your welcome aboard my ship. Had I known you were going to risk compromising this task force's only flying witch squadron, I would have denied your request to come aboard. Miss Litvyak? Would you be so kind as to escort the matron to the flight deck? I'm sure she'll find transport waiting for her.” She says, nodding, mostly to herself.

You sit with Ice, watching the matron gather her fer belongings from near the hatch- a simple day bag seems to be all she brought. “Miss Litvyak, will you dog that hatch when you leave, please?” The captain says, just as she steps out- Katya nods and does so.

“Jesus christ. I'm sorry about that, you two. I had no idea she was going to do that.” The captain shakes her head. “And I had no idea Lieutenant Wells felt that strongly about it. I guess I was wrong.”

>Both.

“Shit happens ma'am, not your fault. But what the hell was that?” You ask, transferring yourself to the more comfortable couch. Settee. Whatever.

The captain shrugs. “I knew she was going to offer you two a chance at heading back to Annapolis for further work- and I was operating under the mistaken impression that Lieutenant Wells was still torn up about not being a striker-capable witch.” She laughs, slightly. “I'm glad to see I was wrong. I just didn't want to see another girl go through what my sister did.”

“I'm not sure I understand, ma'am.” You say, the anger fading from you. “You let her aboard because of your sister?”

The captain smiles, and pulls open her desk, producing a trio of crystal glasses and a clear bottle of amber liquid. “I assume, if I offer you some whiskey, you'll drink with me? You wouldn't make your captain drink alone, right?”

You nod, accepting the glass carefully and sniffing the whiskey- smells very strong, and very old.

“I've got a sister, Henriette. Most of us mackintosh witches take after mom- we come into our talent early. Hell, my familiar appeared just before a family photo when I was three.” She says with aslight smile. “My sister was different. For the longest time, we didn't think she was a witch at all. Mama never treated her any differently than the rest of us, but she still took it badly.”

1/4 (!)
>>
You nod, noting Ice has already downed her whiskey. You take an experimental taste and discover that, yes, it's as strong as it smells. Good stuff, though.

“Well, long story short, her talent showed up abruptly one summer- I don't know what happened, but she was on a family friend's ranch and the horse she was on took a fall, broke it's leg. Only one thing to do, in that case, and that's put it down.” She smiles. “So our friend left her there to say her goodbyes as he headed back to the house to get his rifle. Came back to find my sister passed out and the horse nuzzling the ears on top of her head.”

“She was ecstatic, as you might imagine- we headed to the Annapolis academy that fall for the induction tests.” Her face falls, recalling a bad memory. “She was too weak to rate as even a second-rate witch, forget strikers. She was devastated.”

Ice nods, pushing her glass forward for another refill. “So what happened?”

The captain shrugs. “She moved on, became a very successful ranch vet, got married to a cowboy. Mama thinks Henriette got over it and eventually saw that it didn't matter to her, that she loved us all the same.” She pushes the refilled glass back towards Ice. “But I don't agree, and wanted to give Lieutenant Wells every chance to not have to go through the same thing. I knew she was happy flying with you, commander Bishop, but I never realized she felt the way she did.”

2/3 (I miscounted. whoops)
>>
She shrugs again, quirking an eyebrow at Ice, who's downed the second glass already. That's a good four fingers of some pretty strong stuff in under five minutes- and Ice is neither all that big nor that experienced a drinker.

“Regardless, I made a mistake. If I knew that bitch was going to pull that card on you two-” She trails off. “Well, she's no longer welcome aboard this ship, I'll tell you that. And commander Kazanski, if it'll help, I'll ask around. If there's a sealed chest from your grandparents, you deserve to have it, regardless of some matron trying to use you like a pawn.”

Ice nods, swaying a bit in her chair.

The captain laughs, taking her glass. “Lieutenant Commander, make sure she drinks plenty of water. Worst case, give her the pilot's cure if she's got a hangover, understood?”

You nod, grinning. “You know about that, ma'am? I thought you witches used supplementary oxygen?”

She laughs. “We work around pilots, of course we know about that. Get her back to quarters, give her water.”

You nod. Helping your commander up off her chair. “C'mon boss, let's get back to quarters.”

“I wanna try shomething.” Ice protests. “Letsh go down to the hangar bay. I think I know what zapped Patty.”

On an unrelated note, that last update revealed something interesting: Captain Blackwell is a witch. It was hinted by her being Georgette's daughter, but now it was confirmed. If she's a witch, what's she doing as the captain of an aircraft carrier? If she's that old, shouldn't she be a matron by this point, or at least in charge of an air wing?

[x] That sounds like an incredibly bad Idea, boss. Let's get you back to quarters.

“That sounds like an incredibly bad idea, boss.” You say, doubtfully. “Let's get you back to quarters.”

“If you shay sho.” She says, her voice becoming progressively more slurred. “Ish it hot in here?”

“No, boss. Keep your shirt on.” You say, having to grab her shoulder to keep her from staggering into a bulkhead. She pauses, steadying up a bit. You don't exactly want to explain why you're escorting a drunk, underage witch back to quarters in her underwear to anyone.

“Hmph.” She snorts, pulling away from you and heading down the ladderwell towards your quarters. “I never get 't have any fun. I bet if I wash Katya you'd be happy 't take my shirt off. What'sh wrong with us American girlsh, huh?”

While you'd dearly like to start whistling the who's 'American woman', you get the feeling it'd go right over your commander's head.

“Aw, come on boss, don't be like that.” You protest, pausing so she can lean on you and steady herself again. She wraps one arm around your shoulders, leaning into you heavily- but walking steadily enough for it.

“Sh'not like it's neva been done befoah.” She says, giggling at some private joke. “Happened all the time in the war, the five oh firsht was infamous for it.”

“That was Air force, boss. This is navy, we've got conduct standards.” You say, thanking your respective gods that your quarters are just a few more rooms up.

“Shure we do.” She says. “Just like the twinsh with Joe.”

“Joe's not a pilot, Boss.” You say.

“Ya know, you can shtop calling me boss.” She says. “You're in charge of me right now.”

She giggles. “Sh'not so bad so far. Maybe we should try it shome other time?”

“Try what? You being drunk?” You ask, opening the hatch and motioning for Slider. She rolls her eyes at you as she gets herself off her rack and comes over to help.

“You being in charge.” Ice says, giving you a quick peck on the cheek. “Thanksh Frank I wouldn't be able to do thish without you.”

“Tabby, you drunk. C'mon, let's get you to bed.” Slider says, grinning at you as she takes Ice's other side and guides her away with a smoothness born of long experience dealing with the drunk and otherwise impaired. “Yes, Frank will stay here. No, he's not going anywhere, I promise. Yes, I'll make sure he doesn't.”

Merlin hugs you from the side as soon as she's gone. “I-is that matron-”

You nod. “Gone, the captain kicked her off the ship.” You say. “But you and I need to talk. All that rage isn't healthy for you, sam.”

“I-I know it's not.” She says. “But I c-can't just yell at you or Tabby or Rachel...”

“When we get a chance, Sam, you and I'll take a day off and go see about it, ok? We're a team, right? We look out for each other.” You say.

She nods. “T-thanks Frank.”

You really hope the bad days stop soon though. At least they can't get much worse, you think somewhat sardonically.

"Could you not have stopped him?" Katya barely manages to not yell loud enough to get the get the attention of everyone outside of Ice's office.

"I. Just. Said. No."

"They'll kill him. Or experiment on him. Or-"

"Katya," Ice interrupted, anger and something else written across her face. "Please...don't even suggest those things to me. Ever again." The anger fades away as her voice trembles slightly. "Ever again. Do you understand?"

"I am sorry, Commander Ice." The two women sigh, not able to look eachother in the eye any longer. The last twenty four hours have been strained, to say the least. Frank's decision to go deep into enemy territory has shaken the squadron more than anyone is willing to believe. Merlin has been especially heartbreaking to watch.

Katya does not care much for Tabitha Kazansky. It's not necessarily hate. Jealousy, perhaps, but she'd never admit it to anyone else, and she's only starting to admit it to herself. Katya does not want to make Ice an enemy, though.

"Ah...how about...we just talk." She offers, awkwardly. "And drink. Maybe we can find vodka stored on this ship?"

"That-" Ice blinks. "Okay. Yeah, thats...yeah, lets talk. And you can drink. I...really shouldn't. I have so much paperwork to catch up on, a-and-"

"I think I know why he is so concerned about you." Katya says quietly. "You do care about us so much, that you have no time for yourself. We shall fix that tonight."

Ice sighs. "Okay, fine. One drink. M-maaaaaaaaaaaybe two."

All the SWQ fans have to go somewhere and the ones that are there make enough of a mess. Last thing it needs is a influx of horribly desperate hijink nuts not caring for the story flow.

That isn't bad except that SWQ fans aren't known for controlled Hijinks, they take things far past the point of controlled and into overdone.

Too serious in my opinion and pacing is a little bad (Honestly wanted more cadet stories) and people there often kill the hijinks before they even begin.

"Mmmhmm." Katya is not doing much better, but is still capable at hiding it. She nods at Ice, urging her to continue. After four hours, well past lights out, they are headed into dangerous territory.

"Of coursh, he shaves you ovarthuhpashifficoshun, sho heesh godda be prrteh hawt huh. Fffukker. Alwayshpulin 'em in."

It takes a lot of effort from Katya not to spit up her drink and laugh. She manages to choke down the vodka, clear her throat, and say something she immediately regrets.

"Yes, Comrade, my pilot is the hottest."

"Our pilot."

"Our pilot." Katya...agrees? Wait, that's not a good path to take this. Not good at all.

"Wecan take turnsh..." Ice giggles. "Heee heeeeee, jusht like Tomasho."

"Ah...who?"

"TOMASHO." Ice reaches under her desk and throws a book at Katya's face.

"T-Tomasho?" Katya catches it on her forehead, and the book falls into her hands, opening up to the page held by a bookmark. The words on it are very blurry, but after some concentration they sharpen up enough. Enough to read that.

"W-wow." Katya turns bright red, and pours another drink. "C-can I-"

"WhennI'm dun." Ice grins happily, and just falls asleep in her chair.

"Thanks." Ice snores loudly in response. This brightens Katya's mood considerably. "At leasht I do not snore, Comrade."

Actually, aircraft carriers have two captains: the ship's captain and the air group's captain. If Blackwell used to fly, she's likely the latter.

Eeeeeeee

Nope, she's the ship's captain. When the Saratoga got hit, the news specifically mentioned that it was only saved by her quick thinking and superior ship handling.

Katya feels herself sobering up, seemingly with every trashy detail she reads from the book. It's very warm in the room, almost unbearably so.

"We...should not be here." Katya declares.

Ice continues snoring.

Putting the book back into the drawer Ice pulled it from (God, no-one else must know!), Katya tries to pull Tabitha from her chair.

"Come on, Ice, we must get you to bed."

There's sudden pounding on the door. Katya gasps, and yanks Ice's arm harshly in surprise.

"Tabby? You still in there with Katya?" Slider demands. "Wh-why's the door locked? Everything okay?" The pounding becomes more insistent.

"E-everything ish fine, Comrade Slider, she is...incapacitated!"

"Fuckin' lightweight. Open up, I'll help you with her."

Katya unlocks the door, blushing fiercely as the implications of being alone with Ice, drinking for hours on end become apparent.

"Is that what they call clearin' the air between ya?" Slider sniffs. "Shit, shoulda invited me. You talked about Frank, huh?"

"Y-yes."

Slider sighs. "You girls are fuckin' hopeless." Looking away, she mutters something to herself. "Okay, lets get our junk romance collector to bed. You get her left arm, I got her right."

She does not stir when she is pulled from her seat, at least not immediately. Two steps outside the office, Ice suddenly lunges towards Katya, wraps one leg around her, and pulls her to the ground, Katya landing neatly atop her, their lips meeting harshly.

"Gotchaaaaafraaaaaaaaaank~" Ice giggles. "Yerawwwlminerrrgrhrghbrllllll." Her body falls slack, and her eyes close once again, and snores.

Slider's jaw has hit the floor, but she's still standing, and Katya notices that there's a camera in her hands.

"ohmigodohmigodohmigodohmigod"

"Please, no?" Katya begs.

"No mercy." Slider grins, and the camera emits a gentle click, just before she sprints off, hooting in triumph.

"God. Damnit." Katya sighs.

That just happened. That really just happened, and Slider has evidence of it happening. Ice will not remember, she'll be lucky to wake up for breakfast. But Katya will remember. She will always remember. And she will always know that Slider knows.

"...You could have been more gentle." Katya lifts the younger woman off the deck.

"Myeaaaaaah, shorry Fraankatya." Ice beams drunkenly at Katya. Her eyes widen as recognition finally hits home. "Uhmm...heehee? Ahmshorry, I jus...yknow...thinkin' boufraaaaaaank."

"Y-yes."

"Yerlipsh were shoft. Prolly likehish."

Convinced that she might set off a fire alarm from blushing so hard. Katya picks up the pace to Tabby's room (andSlider'sohgodohgod). It's still quite slow, and several times Ice falls asleep and drags Katya against a bulkhead before waking enough to prop herself up.

"T-Tabitha, pleash...you must get control of yourself."

"Ahmincontrol. Ahmthuh-" her voice raises into a shout as they reach her door, "COMMANDAHONDECK!"

"Jesus Tabby!" Slider cackles from inside the room. "Bring her in, I got her bed ready."

Ice pulled Katya against herself roughly once agains, their foreheads hitting hard enough to cause both women to yelp. Her breath stinks of vodka, and she bites the air between them, grinning broadly.

"He shucks, leevinush like thish. We'llpunish 'im! Youan meeee~"

"R-right." Katya is smiling, but also desperate to escape. Ice's grip on her uniform is surprisingly strong. "Slider, please help?"

There's a faint clicking in the background.

"So. Good." Slider says, awe-struck.

It takes a few minutes for Slider to stop snickering, but she and Katya manage to get the Commander into bed. Her snoring is loud, but cute in a way as well. Katya and Slider are sitting on her bed together, making sure Ice stays in bed until she's truly asleep.

"The photos?" Katya asks nervously.

"Alllllllllllllllllll mine." Slider says wickedly.

"What would you have me do?" Katya asks. "I'll...pay you. Somehow. To keep them hidden, please don't-"

"Aw, c'mon, you think I'd hold those over your head? I got nothin' against you, Litvyak." She points to Ice. "Her though? I got use for those on her." Katya shrinks away from Slider nervously.

"You are evil." Katya concludes.

"Not evil, sometimes I just need her to take a break, and she always comes up with excuses not ta do it." She hugs her camera against her breasts lovingly. "Not anymore she does."

"You are concerned for her."

"I'm concerned for everyone. We're fuckin' falling apart here." Slider snaps. "Goddamnit, Frank. Clueless asshole. Look at what he does to you. To her."

"Yeah." Katya agrees.

"...to me..." Slider mumbles.

"Wha?"

"SO!" Slider quickly moves on. "When I say to her that she needs to take a break, and she tries to come up with an excuse-"

"You mention those-"

"Exactly." Rachel winks at the Russian.

"I am...not entirely relieved, but I understand."

"She one of my best friends, but she doesn't...doesn't listen to me when she needs to." Slider continues sadly. "He'll come back. Has to. You and her and Merlin and me and Mav and Goose, and those stupid Sharks...he has to come back to us."

Katya blinks at Slider, who now has her by the shoulders.

"That means," Rachel snarls, "That you, and her, and all of us, have got to be here waiting for him. We have got to stay on our game, and make sure we're all here when he gets back."

"Agreed."

"And invite me to drink next time, bitch!"

"Yeeeaaaaaaaah inviteshliiiiiidrrrrr~" Ice moans from behind.

"Okay." Katya promises.
