And lo, we come to the mighty tenth thread of the Star Krakens Chapter.

http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Star_Krakens

In this thread, we seek to destroy the naysayers, identify points of Mary-Sueism and obliterate them, and continue to generally fluff out the Chapter.

>Fightan
>Squiddin
>Inkin

First up, let's start with the Grendel. I've seen a lot of complaints about them being a completely vanquished enemy, is this true?
>>
>>27988510
Well, I'd prefer it if they weren't. Achab being unsuccessful would be cool.
>>
>>27988550
Well we've got other planets and stuff mentioning being attacked by the Grendel still.

I admit even I haven't read through all the fluff, can anyone point out to be the bits in which it says all of the Grendel are dead?
>>
>>27988550
And it would give them a better reason to stay where they are now.

On an unrelated note, a lot of the writefaggotry on the main page has to be moved somewhere else. Something more similar to the layout the Blood Jaguars have now would be preferable.
>>
>>27988510
>>27988550
>>27988575
>>27988578
Well, their homeworld was purged, but just because the Krakens purged it doesn't mean that the threat disappeared. Let's specify that the Grendel did survive. But how? Making them into a nomadic race?
>>
>>27988578
Sorting the wiki out will probably be the very last thing we do. So let's just leave it for now, revisit the fluff and then organise shit.
>>
>>27988605
Well we were getting around to the idea of hinting that they would still be somewhere in the Deep, hidden away from even the Star Krakens.

We need to write up 1 last piece of writefagging, at the end of Achab's story, as a kind of summary. The Grendel threat is still very real, and we have absolutely no idea how many of them there are.

We could even retcon so that their homeworld is in the deep Deep still.
>>
>>27988703
Or maybe somewhat they found a new planet, or that the planets the marines purged were simple colonies and the real Grendel homeworld is still somewhere in The Deep. In the undiscovered regions to be precise.
>>
>>27988732
>>27988703
I have no objection to either of those.
>>
>>27988739
Achab asks a Captain where the last fleet of Grendel has gone, and the Captain can't answer him. Achab flogs the man.

I think that's the only mention of the Grendel escaping.
>>
>>27988732
2 possibilities:

The vicious battles that were fought with Achab leading, and almost brought the Chapter to ruin, were only colonies of the Grendel and the Marines knew it. They basically had to hold back on the Grendel killing because Achab almost destroyed the whole damn Chapter.

OR

Achab does all of his stuff, Chapter brought to ruin, etc. But then, a few hundred years later, they find another planet in one of the uncharted bits that's swarming with Grendel. SK's have to get the fuck out of there and notify the rest of the Chapter, and they are then made aware of the idea that there's potential billions of the Grendel hiding in the Deep?
>>
>>27988732
And on that world....

THE GRENDEL BROODMOTHER
>>
>>27988790
The latter is better. It's a HOLY SHIT level of surprise and realization for them.

>>27988801
Final boss. Controls the other Grendel. That would be great.

Bonus points if she's the size of a Warlord Titan. And shoots eggs.
>>
>>27988801
And then the greatest reveal of all Grendels are not xenos. They are severely mutated abhumans of a horrifying but stable strain. This adds more disgust to the nature of the Grendels. Perhaps Achab even had a suspicion that this was the case, driving him to eliminate the whole race?
>>
>>27988859
Did we forget to mention that there's more than one?
>>
>>27988898
Now that's OH SHIT.
>>27988885
Dunno. Or maybe...They are actually a xeno/human hybrid race. Problem is how to justify this?
>>
>>27988940
A variant Genestealer strain?
>>
>>27988801
The Grendel Broodmother would fit in well with the whole Beowulf thing we had.

However, I'm not sure how I like the sound of a FINAL BOSS! Maybe just having the Broodmothers as a relatively rare, yet incredibly powerful enemy, much like the Tyranids.

>>27988885
Now this I can get behind. Either something in the Deep, or the event that made it into the Deep, mutated the humans that lived there and turned them into the Grendel that we know and love?
>>
>>27988976
Nah, more like >>27988977. This would all be legit now.
>>
>>27988859
Final boss? really? Keep your videogames out of the chapter, fuckwad. We've spent 9 threads trying to keep this bullshit out, and it seems the 10th will be no different.
>>
>>27989035
Did you even read the upper posts?
>>
>>27989035
Shut yer trap and contribute.

I'm amazed we didn't mention a broodmother sooner, she's one of the main characters in Beowulf.
>>
>>27988976
Genestealers don't build nations, colonize worlds or enslave humans. They do however, attract hive fleets. Messing with established cannon is something we should steer clear of, as that is the surest sign of faggotry
>>
Nobody freak out.
>>
>>27989002
Right, so let's say 1 in every 500 Grendel is a Broodmother. They're the bitchy, savage mother-in-law from hell.

Now, how do we make them different from the Grendel?

>another option is to have them as rare as in 10,000 or 100,000 and have them on the power level of a Greater Demon, slaughtering Marines whenever they please.
>>
Is anybody freaking out yet? Because nobody do that.
>>
>>27989110
>>27989160
SHIT NIGGA WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?

But seriously, it was due for a sort out, but I personally think it's better if we do it at the very end. Keep the page as one long wiki for now, and we can go over it section by section, deciding whether it needs to stay on the same page, or have it's own separate page.

Get me?
>>
>>27989124
Bigger, badder. Permanently aquatic, prefers to live in absolute darkness. A trench dwelling betentacled monstrosity
>>
Those Broodmothers would have to be something. How big should they be? Because Warlord Titan sized is actually too much. What kind of weapons would they have if other Grendels aren't around? Shooting eggs is a waste of genetic material and a decrease in population.

>>27989124
> They're the bitchy, savage mother-in-law from hell.

Now that's scary. Nothing is scarier than a mother in law. But the Greater Daemon level of power is actually too much. Make them simply large(but not Warlord sized, less than that).

>>27989176
That's even better.

>>27989110
>>27989160
Chill out. Have some Knightmare Treguard for stressing out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSVfp4OtXJw
>>
>>27989176
They give birth to live young, which must swim to the surface to survive. Any that dont make it are judged to weak and eaten. Self fertilizing.

I think one in 10000 or so, like ants
>>
>>27989173
This is like that but better. The original wiki still exists, and is easily referenced by us for our purposes when expanding on the fluff (it is http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Star_Krakens_(legacy))

This page is our face to the public. It sets the tone for the chapter, summarises events and draws people in. The link the old wiki is under: "Further Reading" for anybody to access, and like I said we can still use it for our brainstorming/reference.

>>27989202
I'm chill like a Sunday morning. In winter. I'm worried about the coming freak out.
>>
>>27989176
So have them, pretty much, completely different to the Grendel physically?

I can't think of the word, dimorphism, is that it?

In any case, let's start fleshing out the Broodmothers, and possibly, a better name for them.
>>
>>27989247
We could just call them mothers, and thats what the Grendels refer to them as. Non grendels would call them "Grendel Mothers"

I think we give them the size of a whale, and lots of tentacles and teeth
>>
>>27989247
>>27989274
They are then Orkesaurus (a type of Squiggoth) sized. Have a giant abdomen that produces eggs and where young Grendel gestate until they are capable of moving. The mothers shoot them out of the abdomen.
>>
>>27989247
not completely different, still humanoid. Like a cros between a Sando Aqua Monster and an angler fish
>>
>>27989329
With a giant egg producing abdomen.
>>
>>27989329
Oh jesus, that's the perfect size.

Bonus points for anyone who writefags the Chapters first encounter with this dreadful creature, in the style of the sub scene in Phantom Menace.

>>27989326
Stop injecting your shooting/egg fetish into them. However, I'm in agreement with them being powerful, but not overly powerful.
>>
>>27989369
Scratch the shooting part. Now I realize it's actually stupid.
>>
>>27989220
You're a credit to your circlejerking friends.
>>
>>27989443
Please stop it. We're trying to do something serious about this.
>>
Why not have the brood queens be giant kraken on titan scale living in the deep? Or a giant cthulu type torso deal with octopus tentacles waist down?
>>
>>27989613
I wholeheartedly mean it. It's well formatted, concise, readable, and all your precious special writing has been saved within easy reach.

I don't see why you're all whinging. It's the solution you needed.
>>
>>27989669
Oh. Sorry. My mistake.
>>
>>27989660
We've got too many Krakens krakening over krakens on krakens. We've also got Void Krakens that pretty much fill up that need completely.

I think taking it in >>27989329 this direction is a good move.
>>
And can we please have a tactical maneuvre called "blood and thunder?"
>>
>>27989749
Assault Squads=Blood
Devastator=Thunder
>>
>>27989783
In the narrow corridors of enemy vessels the Assault squad leads, cutting down enemies with their brutal chainsword assault, and screening the following devastators from hard. When the assault squad comes across a foe or obstacle too tough for themselves they call back: "Thunder" and flatten themselves against the wall, letting the ready devastators engage whatever blocks their path. Once it has fallen to the barrage of melta fire the assault squad reforms, and they proceed.

Blood, and Thunder.
>>
>>27989783
The Assault Squads assault jump after the Devastators soften the enemy up.

Or

The Assault Squads jump in, locking enemies in CQC, while Devastators can shoot the enemies that are busy fighting the Assault Squads. High risk of friendly fire.

>>
>>27989952

>>
>>27990048

>>
>>27990201
No, they are too humanoid. This one is supposed to be ugly as hell. Like the Xenomorph queen. Only uglier and aquatic.
>>
I'm off for the night, I shall leave with a few words of wisdom:

For fucks sake, don't get caught up in arguments about Mary-Sueing, namefagging, circle jerking, or anything like that.

Just continue to fluff the Chapter in a way that is interesting, yet not cliche. If we get the Grendel back on the scene, I think everything else will fall into place.
>>
>>27990201
WHO LET HER IN?
>>
>>27990318
>her
>>
>>27990313
No problem.
>>27990318
Her, him, it, hermaphroditic thing.
>>
>>27990244
Well what kind of ugly we talking here?
I'm getting a "Sea Hag Mermaid" vibe, pocked and porous flaps of flesh hanging off a mockery of a human torso, ending in a Cetacea tail.
Her face is nothing but a maw of huge curling teeth and bulbous milky eyes, while glowing tendril lures make up her hair.

>>27990391
That big black thing next to the marine is a Grendel. The Mothers would be something like that, only bigger (like whale sized), uglier and very lethal. Not Greater Daemon level, but scary. "Sea Hag Mermaid" optional but welcomed.
>>
>>27990678
That would be logical.
>>
>>27990678
We already have quite a bit on the Grendels and their physiology. Adding in a Broodmother as an actual brood mother goes against what we have for their genetics and civilization.

The Grendels already have a fairly advanced knowledge of genetic engineering, so once they realized the big, burly guys in armor were the same species as the regular humans they decided they wanted in on that. Compared to Astartes the Grendel are glass cannons, strong enough to kill marines in hand to hand, but not particularly durable and their weapons and armor are below Imperium standards. The Grendel Mothers, as they're called by the Imperium, are results of a Grendel super soldier project.
>>
>>27990678
Yeah I went and found that picture on my own...

Question though, are the Grendel covered in long shaggy hair?
Knowing the skin type would help a lot in describing them.
For sheer disturbing factor, I'd give the Mother's skin like the back of a Surinam toad.

Then again, I'm also in favor of making them Titan sized monstrosities, so their brood clings to them for transport in their native seas and it hurls them at enemies.

And looking at the concepts for Grendel Weapons, I think I have the perfect idea for why the Star Krakens are so devoted to their extinction:
They’re not simply adhumans, but a lost civilization of Dark Age humanity that turned to Biotechnology and genetic manipulation to adapt to the aquatic worlds of the Deep.
The "Pickman's Model" flavor of Mythos would be a unique twist.
>>
>>27991033
>Titan sized monstrosities
pls yes
>>
>>27991032
You do?
Care to point it out?
>>
>>27991062
In prior threads, the one where we first started drawing them has loads of info on how they as a species work.
>>
>>27989749
Blood and thunder hammers
>>
>>27991032
That last sentence is actually logical. The Grendel are a species with their own civilization are capable of pulling something like that off. I only fear when they produce this super-soldier of theirs.
>>
>>27991033
You know what? Now I'm confused. I must go to sleep.
>>
>>27991129
Mind typing up a Bullet Point version?

All I've been able to find on the Wiki page is that they are 7' tall, have ceramite rending claws, have super strength, and use a mishmash of biological and mechanical weaponry.
>>
>>27991208
It explains why the Grendel Mother's are rare, they're not a mass production stage yet, and why they seem to be so protected, the Grendel are combat testing and want the subjects back alive. Something that I also think we're forgetting is that the Grendel aren't a biotech race, they're a cybernetic race. It's not a gun made of flesh, it's a gun made of technology with fleshy components designed to aid in function and link with the wielder.
>>
>>27991033
>spoiler
And have the Space Wolves show up to defend them. or maybe not. it seems they're not aware of their heritage
>>
>>27991277
Again, mind sharing this info with the rest of the class?
It's all well and good if you've already got these things figured out, but one of the biggest complaints I've heard about the Star Krakens is how they just muddle around in the Deep, and guarding against a terrifying threat to the Imperium sounds like the perfect explaination.
>>

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/27920564/

Contains most of the original Grendel brainstorming.

>Star Krakens were founded to fight the Grendel, originally believed to be a weak, minor xenos.
>Their crusade was originally believed to have wiped out the Grendel homeworlds
>Grendel take loads of prisoners and use them to make new Grendel by changing the prisoners dna.
>Despite the purge of the Grendel worlds they have returned with renewed vigor, leading the Star Krakens to ponder if the Grendel have made pacts with dark powers or perhaps have planets within the Deep undiscovered.
>Individually they're somewhat antisocial, but use pheromones to aid group cohesion.
>>
>>27991587
Not seeing anything here that truly prevents the implementation of Monstrous brood females...
In fact some bits become more logical because of it, like forcibly mutating abducted human slaves to replenish numbers, because if your TRUE breeder is a giant Mermonster she's not going to be easy to transport.

OK, so let's sum it up before I go to sleep:

- Grendel are still around after the purge of their worlds because there is a probability that the purged worlds were outer colonies and that their real homeworlds are somewhere inside the Deep (in the unexplored parts of it).

- The basic Grendel are glass cannons that can rip and tear a Astartes in CQC, yet have poor protection against their weapons. There is the probability that the giant living bio-factories known as Mothers (and which exist thanks to the Grendel being genetics) are probably trying to give birth to the Xeno's version of the Astartes.

- Also now it is not possible that the Grendel are now to be considered as purely xenos. There is now a probability that they could be humans that changed to adapt to the Deep (which would be HERESY) or somebody/something changed the humans that went there into what they are now. Or they may be as well something piece by piece from all three theories.

OK, so good night chaps. See you in 9 or 10 hours. Need my beauty sleep...

Plus posting that pic with the Star Kraken armors from 9th thread, because they are awesome, especially the two ones on the far right.

Not this guy, but I think this could work. Possibly they're extensively rebuilt into an even larger form, with redundant organs and extensive cybernetics, possibly including a black carapace-equivalent. Of course, they're not quite marine-level yet. Possibly they can withstand more damage thanks to a hyperactive metabolism that requires them to be hooked to a constant supply of rejuvenating drugs and replacement tissues so they don't drop dead of old age before the campaign is over?

Porphyrous is a former oceanic hiveworld near the edge of the Grendel Bastion Worlds. Submarine hives aquaculturally sustained contained Porphyrous' entire human population, leaving its continents untouched and covered with vast wilderness. Porphyrous used to have one moon; now, it has two.

Krakenmoon, a satellite of the watery now-feral planet Porphyrous, is enormous even by Space Hulk standards: it emerged from the Warp centuries prior to becoming Porphyrous' closer moon. Famously, the Krakenmoon unloaded an eclectic, deadly cargo into Porphyrous' globe-spanning ocean: aquatic Xenos, oceangoing Orks, pelagic Daemons, eponymous Krakens.... and even Grendel (no genestealers or tyranids, tho, so that's good, at least). Anyways, these varied forces wiped out Porphyrous' undersea hives and 99% of the planets' former population of ten billion human souls. The hundred million or so survivors escaped the oceans for the interior lands of Porphyrous' continents (it being an earthlike planet with a slightly greater ratio of ocean to land), and descended into comparative barbarity -- fleeing with only what they could carry, the few survivors were forced to abandon nearly all of their resources and technology behind in the cities which had become sunken dungeons & tombs. The seas became thoroughly haunted by evil.

The Star Krakens are known to recruit from the feral descendants of Porphyrous' survivors. There are a few different types: those of the inlands fear the sea, while those who boldly ply the coastlines and deep ocean are justifiably terrified of it. Adventurers are sometimes crazy enough to go into the depths to recover lostech....

....and so, too, every Star Kraken, who must plumb the depths of Porphyrous and/or the Krakenmoon to slay Grendel and recover a wondrous prize from the Age of Technology in order to join the ranks of the TENTACLES (Wolf Guard Equivalent) -- they either get to keep the high-tech toy for use in combat or trade it into the armory.
>>
>>27994224
lol when I wrote this I had no idea that Porphyrous means "Purple," meaning that must be the color of its oceans.

Nice try. We're not accepting that unaltered, nor shall we rage about the overuse of kraken imagery. This plumbing of space hulks as a rite of passage does bring up an interesting point: the fact the chapter has any good stuff at all. It's a young chapter, from the most recent Founding, and should barely have any terminator suits or dreadnoughts, if any. But what if the chapter is decked out in mismatched pieces of every mark of power armor, toting heresy era bolters, and plasmaguns from Mechanicus Explorator fleets from before the Great Crusade? Where other chapters fear the Spacehulk, the Krakens have made the abominations of metal and stone into their training grounds.
>>
>>27994942
The first company has eight terminator suits, there are a handful of dreads, it need be no more complicated than that.
>>
Question, are Grendel susceptible to the influence of the Warp?
A large number of Adhumans have a tendancy to go Chaos, but that would be rather boring if the Grendel were just another Beastman Cult.
>>
>>27998603
It had been roundly decided in discussion that their chaotic influence should be little to none. Maybe a few of the older marines suspect it: "By gosh the only way filthy xenos could have pwned our Chapter during the Heorot crusade was if they had CHAOS on their side, eh wot!" but without any actual evidence ever being present.
>>
Whoever rewrote the lore on the Deep did a great job.

By making the Lighthouse into the space equivalent of the Panama Canal (in spaaace) you've made the Deep relevant to the Imperium again, created tension, and given many sources of conflict. On top of that it seems there are no fewer than three major organisations - The Administratum, the Navy and a Rogue Trader - who all have opposing ideas about the Lighthouse. All of them want it for themselves, but none of them want to let the other two have it, which has amazing potential.

I honestly didn't think the Chapter could be saved, but this is a couple of steps in the right direction. I am impressed.
>>
>>27998684
Ah good, because I was thinking if one of the Grendel's tricks is biomanipulation, maybe they outright turned themselves into Psychic Nulls in order to maneuver around Chaotic Deep influences like the Slaaneshi Sirens.
This, coupled with the fact that inorganic base for some of their equipment is Archeotech, would help give credence to the possibility that the Grendel were once Dark Age humans who turned themselves into something NOT human to survive.
>>
>>27998790

Yup, we've got come a long way. From constantly wanking on our favorite characters to putting character into their surroundings. We've got a ways to go yet, but we might be able to save this project from itself. We need more fluff on the Dick Ass Rogue Traders (DARTs), the various enemies in the Deep (be they human, xenos, or Chaos), and the Imperium's relation to the Deep as an area of space.
>>
if the grendel are able to transform ordinary humans into 7' tall murderous creatures through bioengineering, i wonder if they've had dealings with fabius bile
>>
>>27999001

Or if they're parasitic by biology, rewriting genetic code through infection like genestealers, sans psychic hivemind.
>>
Ehhh. I'm more a fan on the Grendel being creepy-ass xenos that are native to the Deep.
>>
>>27998961
Even Mokoyll is becoming something good. He's gone from "super-cool insert" to "Cnut the Great IN SPACE" on the 1d4chan page
>>
>>27999040
>>27999046
Why can't we leave the lines burled between these?
Are they something Dark Age humans turned themselves into to survive, or something Native to the Deep that hijacks human Colonist?
>>
>>27999729

Maybe it's a situation of "nobody knows"? Human DNA might be suggested in their biology through similar genes, but by no means is it explained: either they were turned by the xenos or were the subject of a genetic adaptation gone awry. Regardless of their xenos or abhuman origins, they fall under the jurisdiction of the Ordo Xenos, and they don't like them.
>>
>>27999894
Or sicked the Krakens on them originally so some Magos Biologis wouldn't come along and get the wrong ideas from them.
>>
Ok, as much as I don't want to start any sort of argument among the chapter, I really don't appreciate Siewurd being changed into this "Gardaz" figure.

What was once this:

>Siewurd is the feared High Chaplain of the Star Krakens. A cold and haughty figure, he speaks with a hoarse voice and grinds on the metal teeth of his cybernetic jaw. The High Chaplain is known for his harsh expectations of faith from his fellow brothers. Siewurd's title comes from the nine runic nails he pierced into his right arm in penance for a sin he committed early in his command. He wields the mighty relic Dagonssultr, a chainfist that incorporates a Crozius Arcanum into it.

is now this:

>Gardaz is the feared High Chaplain of the Star Krakens. The High Chaplain is Known for his harsh expectations of faith from his fellow brothers. Gazard 's title comes from the nine runic nails he pierced into his right arm in penance for all his minor sins, and to remind himself of the failings of his own brothers. He wields a mighty crozius arcanum, its tip the shape of a thunderbolt, a potent symbol of the Emperors Fury. It is said that Gardaz knows all the sins of the Chapter, but that is merely myth to explain his dour approach to preaching.

Yes, I recognize that everyone should be able to contribute. But please, at least discuss changes before you enact them. I recognize many of you dislike the "namefags" that wrote much of this chapter's material, but if you could at the very least respect the time and energy that went into the creation, we would really appreciate it.

Probably. Still writing up an Inquisitor or two, with our on-project drawfag, plus some more for the rogues gallery.
>>
>>28000057
Don't get up your own ass over it. Just ask to have it changed back and we'll go from there.
>>
>>28000236
It's less about that change specifically, and more about changes like it. I'm concerned that this focus on "anti-Sueing" the chapter is going too far, and losing a lot of its original appeal.
>>
>>28000057
I've noticed that before. Someone slips in and changes a name without any consoltation with the others. It was becoming a daily occurence on the previous wiki for me to have to change 'Kommochog' back to 'Vastergo' amongst others.

Whoever is doing this, man, I hate to break it to you... But your shitty generic fantasy names are just as banal as everyone else's shitty generic fantasy names. However the names on the wiki have been exposed to the rigors of multiple threads of criticsm, whereas yours are just freshly pulled from your ass. Please stop it.

I'll be restoring the wiki once I get home.
>>
>>28000246
At the same time you have to realize that many are concerned that the focus on individual characters will overshadow the effort put into the chapter. With a collaborative effort you have to divorce yourself from your input a bit. You don't own the idea after its put out here and what is saved is determined by consensus, or, considering the limits of that in an open forum, a lack of objection. I've been here since the beginning, I created Huginn, Muninn, Achab, and fleshed out some of the early history of the chapter. Of that only Muninn has survived more or less in it's original form. Do I like all the changes that have occurred? No. But it's not my call and I roll with what happens.
>>
>>28000396
I initially suggested and fluffed the Grendel in thread 2, I never envisioned them becoming warp tainted hermaphrodites with erotic weaponry, but they're a core concept of the Chapter, like the Lighthouse, and so I too let it go.

But this guy is dropping in and changing Sieward to Geeward for, as far as I can tell, no reason other than: herp derp I know better than everyone. Not to mention the quality of writing gets worse with his edits.

It's just nonsense.
>>
>>28000539
>erotic weaponry

Never fails to get a laugh out of me.

I'm not supporting the random wiki changes asshole, he's done it before right? I just think that far too often things are taken personally and too serious. I mean, we're a bunch of curmudgeonly Viking sailors fighting alien bitches who use penis guns and the space mafia.

>>28000539
A SK namefag complaining about the quality of the writing? How ironic!

Wait. He complained? What was there to complain?
>>28000539

Nothing. I'll revert the edits and append a note to them kindly directly him here to discuss his issues.
>>
>>28001818
Good idea. We'd better have a discussion about his behavior.
>>
>>27999046
>>27999729
The things discussed in this thread can be changed into rumors and heresay in the canon so we can make them more mysterious and scary. The Grendel are another extremely dangerous species that the Imperium doesn't know much about; maybe they were a native species to the region, maybe they were humans who were turned by a yet to be discovered race who uses them as their thralls and defenders, maybe Chaos has something to do with it, who knows? That's where the fear comes from and I think we should keep their origins as vague and blurry as possible.
>>
>>28001932
Or maybe that all your theories are true to some point and actually somehow they blend with each other. But the latter part is best. What's worse than a enemy you know? A enemy that is enigmatic and where you don't know anything about him apart of some facts.
>>
>>28001878
Dude, you're making me feel like his dad. Anyway it's done, polite redirection to here if he has some issue with the characters as written, where the subject will be politely discussed.

And now we wait...
>>
>>28002348
I sounded like that? Sorry.

Plus we still didn't done the Techmarines. Mokyoll was supposed to make them.
>>
>>28000539

Who the fuck said anything about "erotic weaponry"? The concept was that the Grendel have extreme sexual dimorphism, like the anglerfish, where the males are just diminutive sacks of organs attached to the female like parasites. The Grendel further cyborgized these parasitic males and upgraded them with biotechnology to serve various purposes.
>>
>>28002714
Which really begs the question:

If these Grendel have 'brood mothers' to breed more of their kind, why would the males have developed into parasites on the females? Normally it was fluffed for reproductive purposes, but clearly that doesn't fit in anymore.
>>
>>28002814

The whole broodmother thing is too cliché and overdone in my opinion. I'd much rather it was some bioengineered Grendel monstrocity weapon/vehicle, like an Evangelion-sized lobotomized Grendel with exterior armor plates bolted on and wielding oversized weapons, piloted by a regular Grendel inserted in the spine.
>>
>>28002851
Problem is that those brood mothers don't produce offspring. The Grendel having genetic engineering as one of their specialties created them to produce (or trying to produce) their own version of a super-soldier.
>>
>>28002981
Then why in the Flying Dutchman are they called Brood Mothers?
>>
>>28002981

If they don't produce offspring, why call them "mothers"? Call them Elites or something.
>>
>>28002814

The reason anglerfish have this arrangement is because they live solitary in the deep, where food is scarce and the likelihood of encountering the opposite sex is low. Thus, the males latch on to the female and reproduction is guaranteed for the least possible expenditure of nutrient and energy.

http://mudfooted.com/deep-sea-anglerfish-bizarre-reproduction/
>>
>>28003002
>>28003008
As said in the previous posts. The Brood Mothers (or simply Mothers) are the Grendel's attempt to create their own versions of Space Marines. Grendels themselves are capable of rip'n'tearing a Astartes in CQC, but have pathetic protection from their weapons.

Thus the Mothers are living bio-factories to create their own super soldiers. However, like other anons suggested, these things are RARE, so maybe for each 10000 Grendels, there is only one whale sized thing of a Mother.

So far the Mothers failed to produced enhanced offspring (only normal Grendel), but imagine what happens if the xenos succeeded in producing at least on Super Grendel.

I hope this is good enough to justify their existence.
>>
>>28003035
I know; that's what I had said in the post. Reproductive purposes.

The existence of the 'Brood Mothers' nullifies the need for reproduction on an individual scale, and therefore the need for the males to parasitically attach to the female drones.

Logically, the brood mother should be covered in an armoured mass of male units.
>>
>>28002714
It's a direct quote from a post summarizing the Grendel last thread. We're using it in good humour though.
>>
>>28003074
>Grendels themselves are capable of rip'n'tearing a Astartes in CQC, but have pathetic protection from their weapons.

This goes against previously established fluff that has Grendel being very tough-skinned, resistant to weapons and hard to kill. Look at the Squad Black Fist origin story, for instance.

So the Brood Mothers aren't actually the Grendel version of marines, just a production facility? Still overdone. The whole "huge monstrocity pumping out babies" is a pretty tired cliché when doing wierd aliens. I much prefer Grendel to be solitary, territorial and individually dangerous, like Beholders. Or you know, like the actual anglerfish they take inspiration from.
>>
>>28003107

The summary in the last thread was borderline trolling. I was going to comment on it then, but didn't have the time to go into a debate, and then the shitstorms happened so that got pushed to the sidelines.
>>
>>28003118
Dang it. I've read the other fluffs, but that particular one I did not. Sorry for my ignorance, I must lecture myself on that.

Then what to do with those Brood Mothers then?

Seriously, the day the Kraken fluff is fluffed out is the day when Lelith Hesperax and Drazhar become a pair, Vect will attend their wedding as a priest, and make them wife and husband. Then every single psyker will sense a strange disturbance in the Warp.
>>
>>28003183

How about making them into the Grendel version of Titans? Piloted kaiju-sized cyborg beasts that have been encountered just recently and weren't seen during the crusade. Heavily implied the Grendel made some kind of technological leap or bargain with some powerful faction in order to get this stuff going. They're referred to as "Broodmothers" because they function as APCs and the first description of them went into detail on how the beast's belly split open and disgorged a platoon of Grendel troops, like giving birth to a litter.
>>
>>28003210
Now that's actually better. Not cliché, and nice.
>>
>>28003183
Agreed. I like the solitary anglerfish idea, and it keeps in line with the original Grendel. Maybe the "female" Grendel are naturally slightly bigger than the male?
>>
>>28003233

Also, is this the Chapter symbol (improved version)? I made it as the badge of the Third Company, like how each Space Wolf Great Company has their own symbol, but it seems to have been adopted by err'body which warms the cockles of my heart. Should I make a version for each company?
>>
>>28003264
>>28003233

If we establish them as solitary, we have another interesting plot hook. During the crusade, the Grendel were fighting in individual tribes, not coordinating the defense of their colonies. Now they seem to pursue a common agenda, one tribe staging diversionary raids while another tribe penetrates deep into Imperial-controlled space to sabotage or invade. They also band together in greater numbers, rallying a greater amount of soldiers together during large battles. This is contrary to basic Grendel psychology and shows that they're under a great deal of stress, but it could also mean they're evolving to become more cooperative, or being modified into sociality by another faction.
>>
>>28003275
Dunno. The other anons should have their own thing on this. I like that they would have their own symbols, but let's have the other anons decide on that.

Splitting into different companies that don't care about each other too much is one thing. Abandoning any pretense at being a unified chapter, and adopting different symbols, during only a portion of the millenium the Krakens have existed? That is too much. Better to keep the companie symbols uniform, a sign of the faint hope that the chapter will regained its unity once more.

I'm not that good in doing someone's else fluff. I'm having loads of work with the Black Locks (especially after the Star Krakens took in most of the ideas that I wanted to include, but it turned out for the better this way and I can now make the Locks more credible).

So now we know this that the Grendel are still in the Deep. Their Mothers are giant troop carriers and their females are slightly bigger. So we can close this one and go analyze the Marines themselves?
>>
>>28003304
Warfare does bring about massive social change. In destroying those Grendel worlds the Imperium has turned a bunch of competing nations into a unified body.

>>28003118
I always figured the Grendel for being Ork tough. It has been fluffed that their weaponry and armor simply aren't up to snuff compared to the Astartes and, unlike Genestealers, they lack the mobility to crawl on ceilings and slip through vents. In the long straight corridors that make up ships they're chewed down at range while the marines can better absorb Grendel fire. They're forced to get in close to insure kills, but at the same time that leaves them fighting hand to hand against chainsaw swords and hammers that say, "Fuck you" to molecular cohesion. The Mothers could be them trying to build a better Grendel.

>>28003210
They shouldn't be Titan equivalents. At Titan scale the sector would be receiving far more attention, the AdMech military presence would be beefed up, and the logistical issues of something that size would change the nature of the Grendel conflict. I do like the fleshy APC idea though.
>>
>>27988510

The depths need to be a more looming threat, mysterious and terrible.

The Star Krakens can't just be on sentry duty all the time after claiming the lighthouse and defeating the Grendel. They are fleet based, individual companies would likely crusade against various Xenos, including Ork and Eldar pirates, minor Xenos empires such as Grendel holdouts etc. They also seem ideal for fighting the Tyranids: experienced in monster slaying, dealing with bio-weapons, space combat, psychological threats, with a preference for special ammo and a lack of heavy vehicles.

The unexplored depths should be a looming threat, spoken only of in legends of those brave enough to venture that far: a dread realm inhabited by unknown creatures of utterly unknowable biology on all its worlds. The Grendel are terrifying for the inhabitants of the sector, but were just the beginning of what is out there.

The black void is rumored to be traversed by terrible space-going monstrosities the size of small moons, which hunt each other and can swallow spaceships whole. Some say they lure their prey through lanterns that glow both like distant suns in the darkness of nebula-tangled realspace, and like small beacons in the hell of the warp. When xenos or rebel raiders flee from the Star Krakens into the deep of deep, the Krakens' pursuit is guaranteed to be a perilous voyage.
>>
>>28004842
That's all good point to be considered.

>>28005093
Moon sized? Now that's overkill.
>>
>>28005093

Also, it's been determined they specialize in boarding actions, with loads of special ammo, melta weapons and ancient breaching shields(even for basic tactical marines), and a distinct lack of heavy land vehicles. A lot of this will impact their eventual crunch, but there's more to boarding actions than just those:

Shotguns. An ideal boarding weapon, Star Krakens are likely to consider giving them to their Tactical Marines, perhaps with special shotgun ammunition(Ignis and Shredder are canon special shotgun ammo types). The range doesn't matter inside the corridors of a spacefaring vessel, and a Shotgun can be an ideal delivery system for certain short ranged ammo types.
>>
>>28005127

Maybe they're not moon sized. Who knows. They're mostly legendary at this point, it's all about the terror of the unknown that the Star Krakens face.
>>
>>28005222
So far we've got an asteriod full of bound Slaaneshi daemonettes luring ships to their doom, and ghostlights that confuse navigators and can destroy ships in realspace.
>>
>>28005222
Right. The "Fear of The Unknown".

>>28005382

>>28005161
Then those have to be larger than average shotguns if they have to have maximum efficiency.
>>
>>28005405

Space Marine "Manstopper" shotguns are stronger than ordinary shotguns already, and also have special ammunition available.

>>
>>28006081
>>28006268

>>
>>28006340
This should go into their fluff.
>>
>>28006387

Could be a Chapter Tactic:

Star Kraken Tactical Marines can replace their Boltgun and Bolt Pistol for an Astartes Assault Shotgun (12" S4 AP- Assault 2) and Combat Shield for free.
>>
>>28006468
Do Star Krakens have assault marines? Considering their Tacticals seem to do all the assault and boarding stuff anyways, I don't really see a need for them.
>>
>>28006495

Jump packs in close quarters? Just extra bulk in tight spaces. I suppose they could Deep Strike in, or decide to take a more direct approach to boarding than Lateral Steel Rain, using the packs to maneuver in space and jump in the holes punched by the ship's main guns.
>>
>>28006468
Name of Tactic? Advancing Cloud of Penetration.

>>28006495
They could be of the same stuff as the Tactical Squads, but instead of bolters/shotguns + shields, they would have their guns replaced with Chainswords/axes.

Pity that Veterans can't take modified storm shields + storm bolter/dual linked Astartes Assault Shotguns or power weapon combos.
>>
>>28006575
Could get rid of stern and vanguard veterans and replace them with Border Men who have True Grit and that same equipment.

Stormbolters with bayonets. I could dig it.
>>
>>28006468
I like this. Chapter tactic: March of the Deep, maybe?

>>28006495
Assault marines don't necessarily have to use jump packs.
>>
>>28006565
Deep Strike via Personal Teleporters (Davian Thule style).

Steel Rain Indrick Boreal style, only precise.

>>28006634
Like the name. Border Men. And every gun is better with bayonets attached to them.
>>
>>28006669
Better than mine. I like it.
>>
>>28006673

I'm not a fan. Aren't personal teleporters too expensive? Like, only Grey Knights do that.

Assault Marines can do their thing when the conflict has started with a broadside, instead of a surprise Stehl Rhein: the wreckage posing a risk to the pods. Assault Marines can navigate through the debris cloud. Slower than direct boarding, a lot less risky than firing pods into a sea of ship plating-grade wreckage, which while it might not outright destroy the pods, could send them careening off course.
>>
>>28006798
Could also be more useful as 'scouts in space' since the krakens fight in an asteroid field.

I still like the Border Men though.
>>
>>28006826

I'm feeling Vanguard and Sternguard still have their place: Vanguard tearing it up in the tightest of spaces, while the Sternguard plug Kraken Bolts down the long hallways, or fill the close quarters with incendiary of poisonous rounds.

We don't need special units. We're not writing a new Codex, just giving an existing one Chapter Tactics. Vanguard and Sternguard may be called the Boarder Men, and look a little different, but still be functionally identical.
>>
>>28006889
Bu-but... muh True grit w/modified storm shields and stormbolters/shotguns....
>>
>>28007043
That could just be an alternate loadout. I could see Star Kraken Sternguard being allowed to take storm shields in addition to their bolters. Then we connect back to the original idea of boarding shields.
>>
Star Krakens have in abundance:
Tempest ammo for boltguns(precise explosive shards that produce EMP, has both volume of fire and anti-armor potential but low range)
Shotguns(with special ammo)
Breaching Shields
Drop Pods/Boarding Craft
Melta weapons

Their lack of high tech or heavy vehicles means shortage or complete lack of:
Graviton weapons
Predators
Vindicators
Land Raiders
Contemptor Dreadnoughts
>>
>>28007154
Which makes use go into Terminator territory. The same loadout as traditional ones?

>>28007451
Shortage:
Predators, Vindicators, they may have two or three graviton weapons.

Lack of:
Land Riders (Terminators need to Deep Strike), Contemptor Dreadnought (like a abundance of Chapters apart of the 1st founding and a few of other ones with good connections/luck).
>>
>>28007154

Storm Shields // boarding shields.

Boarding shields could be something along the lines of:
>cannot claim +1 attack bonus for dual wielding
>-1 to run and sweeping advance rolls for unit containing one or more
>re-roll failed saves against interceptor fire and snap shots
>6++ invuln save

No energy field like a Storm Shield, but rather a cumbersome, armor-enhancing metal plate that serves as mobile cover.
>>
>>28007624
Let us think of the rules after we pointed out the flaws in the lore and fluff we wanted originally to purge in order to make the Krakens look even more legit.
>>
>>28007674

What were the things that needed purging, anyway? Were there mary sues or something?
>>
>>28007717
Some accused them of having elements. The threads from 10 onwards were supposed to find out stuff with the Grendel (which was fixed) and in order to justify even more why the Star Krakens are still in the Deep constantly.
>>
>>28007624
Or, like, you could just treat any model carrying a Boarding Shield as if prone behind cover (and they pay for it with the bad stuff you said).
>>
>>28007505

Vanguard already have the option for Storm Shields. Sternguard could trade their pistols for a Storm Shield for 15 points, but including all these options into a single Chapter Tactic would make for a pretty wordy Tactic.

What about a second? Something to help them out in CC? The ability to assault after Deep Striking (okay, that sounds pretty OP). We can wait a bit to fluff that out, and consolidate our first Chapter Tactic after making sure it's okay.
>>
>>28007776
Let us do the rules later. Now let us polish the Krakens.
>>
>>28007624

I'm more of a fan of Combat Shields, they're simple and already exist. They grant a 6++ invul. save, but the bearer can still claim an extra attack for being armed with multiple melee weapons or pistols, due to the lightweight design of the shield.

The Storm Shield is much heavier, which is why you can't claim extra attacks, but it also grants a 3++ save.

Of course, A Tactical Marine squad armed with Combat Shields won't get an extra attack, as they don't have a pistol or CCW. It's a trade of an extra attack for a 6++ save.
>>
>>28007795

Alright, rules later. Bad guys now.

Let's say for argument's sake that there are three small bands of DEldar raiders. The Star Krakens believe them to have a base inside the Deep, with a possible webway portal.
>>
>>28009420
The Grendel make such wonderful playthings in Comorragh's gladiator pits. As the Star Krakens wish to exterminate them, the cabals must constantly patrol to protect their prized pets from predation.

Basically, the DEldar are eco-pirates, and the Star Krakens are Japanese whalers.

This is the most hilariously perfect thing to come of the Star Krakens. It fits the tone of 40k perfectly, too. You have the imperium fighting to destroy a threat to its survival that is just the plaything of a far older race. It shows the steady decline of the Imperium, which would once have rolled over the Grendels, and the depraved indifference (among the other things that are depraved about them) f the Deldar. Good work. Maybe even Vect has certain broodmother that is his personal pet, and he would be most displeased if the Krakens were to slay elegeant, beautiful, mucus-covered Freyja
>>
>>28016477
Yeah book one.
>>
>>28015949

Could work, and give a good defense against Flamer overwatch. Kind of a situational defense, but it does give them survivability on the charge.
>>
>>27988977
>mutated the humans that lived there and turned them into the Grendel that we know and love?
Plot twist : they are totally marine-compatible.
>>
>>28017414
The Grendel are all female, with the males being non-sentient blobs of organs and gonads that are attached to the Grendel to breed and used as a base for their cybernetics and genetic engineering. Though it's entirely possible they could stick geneseed in a Grendel male and get an incredibly beefy sack of organs and gonads.
>>
>>28016503

I think a Grendel broodmother would be beneath Vect's notice, but there might me a cabal that's cultivating Grendel specimens with the ultimate goal of presenting an interesting, beautiful monster to Vect. The cabal could assist the Grendel in their doomed struggle, all the while planning to reap their despair and grief when their last homeworld falls.
>>
Hey guys. Came back after a while. Now I see that you gave the Dark Eldar a reason to go around the Deep and interacting with the Grendel.

Now how we should call this new Cabal?
>>
So we've turned the grendel from this huge threat, to a defeated threat, to the Dark Eldar's bitches.
>>
>>28018488
Not quite, and not wholly. They are still a threat, but the Dark Eldar stick with them out of interest and for sport. We can justify that the Grendel the Dark Eldar take to Commoragh are actually from the slave class or Grendels that failed and became the DEldar's playthings as punishment.
>>
>>27988703
That's what I was going for, that they have a homeworld way out there in the deep that they have some way of returning to..
>>
>>28018488

They are still a huge threat. Arguably, with the appearance of Broodmother-class troop carriers and their new, coordinated battle tactics, they're more dangerous than ever, just fewer in number.

And the fact that they may have dealings with the Deldar (and possibly sell them a few slaves and such) does not make them their bitches. A tribe or two could have been enslaved, but the Grendel nation as a whole isn't under Deldar control. The Kabal (of the Black Bile? the Venomous Thorn? the Clouded Eye? I'm just throwing ideas out here) may be maneuvering to manipulate the Grendel war council, which is an unstable arrangement to begin with since most of the tribes hate each other, but they shouldn't have all that much power over them.
>>
>>28018518
Venomous Thorn...I like it.
>>
>>28018499
How about this, when the Star Kraken's drove the Grendels into the deep they more or less ended any way of Grendels to get enough to survive so they make deals with any other group that will provide them what they need.

>>28008934
This would make another reason why the DEldar would even bother to give the Grendels a look at for anything but pure slaves.

Grendels can be considered "Deep Divers"...

Actually that sounds like a new faction
"Deep divers"
Groups who travel into the deep on purpose for looting and whom half of the time end up lost, dead, chaos infested, blown up by the Star Kraken, or defeated by the Grendels.
>>
>>28018565
This and >>28018518 are all very legit theories. We'd need to combine these. This way we'll add even more character to our favorite anglerfishmen and flesh out the Cabal. Plus >>28018525 seems to be a good idea for a name as >>28018518 suggested.
>>
After reading the fluff, I ask myself a question : why isn't there a commodore in current time ? And if there is a good reason for that, who is the contact with the Imperium ?
>>
>>28018582
Well, Mokyoll The Destroyer is the best Commodore material, but seems that for now the Krakens are sticking to the example set by the Iron Hands. The Vanagrian Guard makes up for their lack of contact with the Imperium while they sit in the Deep and keeping their home sector clean.
>>
>>28018582

The companies are divided on who to choose for Commodore, so for now every company commander may liaise with the Imperium when contacted.

It may be that the companies prefer this arrangement because each of the company commanders gets a share of the power.
>>
>>28018600
Well fine, but there should be a mention of it somewhere because we go from an elected Commodore to a no commodore at all situation.

Also, if I may raise an idea for the last company, maybe a company of explorers would be themed. After all the vikings were good explorers.
>>
>>28018580
Should it be a full on Cabal? What about a group trying to become a full fledged Cabal? It'd explain why they're dealing so heavily with the Grendel instead of their usual tactics, they're trying to set up a supply chain of arena fighters to build their cred.
>>
>>28018619
Dunno. Have to see how other anons think about it.

>>28018635
I also thought about something like a young Cabal that are building up their prestige. This is actually a good idea.
>>
>>28018653
It keeps them from being too big a threat. They've got to keep the Grendel from realizing their endgame while doing standard slave taking from the surrounding planets and at the same time fight off other DEldar wanting in on their racket and avoiding the Star Krakens.
>>
>>28018662
I like where this is going. We could use some of the tables from the DEldar creation table (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Dark_Eldar_Kabal_Creation_Tables) to give the Kabal some characteristics apart of what we made prior. Not all of the tables, since that would limit us. We know the Kabal's name, they are essentially newcomers that are building up their prestige. They are into slavery and looting. They may organize gladiatorial fights for some extra credit. They are pirates, their Kabal is very recent and thus if they want to build up their prestige, they need as many slaves they can get their hands on. Their leader may be manipulative so to justify their dealings with the Grendel and getting slaves from them. The Kabal is small, yet they are slowly attracting in more specialized forces to aid them. Their base would be the aforementioned satellite base with a crystalline look and which is located in a place well camouflaged from Imperial forces (as well other factions).
>>
Rolled 6

>>28018738

Alright. I'm rolling for Archon (actually, we haven't established if the Kabal is led by an Archon, it could be a Haemonculus too I guess) personality to get things started.
>>
>>28018738
I say don't bother too much with the tables and give them an "all or nothing" feel. They've got a plan, but they're having to make do and play it by ear wheeling and dealing across the sector. They're also dealing with the Dickass Rogue Traders, but are planning on doublecrossing them when the time is right. However, the Dickass Rogue Traders figure that is what will happen and are manipulating the DEldar for their own ends. But, the DEldar have figured this out and are attempting to pull a fast one. The DARTs expect this and...you get gist of what I'm going for.
>>
Rolled 1

>>28018747
>Indifferent- Sex and drugs gets old after a while. Your leader is more cold-hearted and jaded than the CEO of a suicide booth company.

Interesting. A cynical and detached leader. Perhaps this one got tired of Commorragh's endless politicking and is trying to carve out a raider/corsair power base in the Deep and its surroundings. Maybe he's already tried, and failed, to bring a Kabal to power and the Venomous Thorn is his second attempt?

Now rolling for flaw.
>>
>>28018763
Both manipulating each other. The end results would be hilarious.

>>28018747
>>28018766
Hmmmm, interesting.
>>
>>28018766
How about he's a grunt who got tired of being the low man on the totem pole, told enough believable lies to gather a crew of desperate, down on their luck assholes, and stole a ship?
>>
>>28018766

>We Stand Alone - The Kabal maintains distant relations with everyone, seeing imminent betrayal everywhere.

Keeping everyone at arm's length fits in with the leader's jaded personality. I can see this Kabal trying to fight proxy wars and moving in the shadows, staying hidden for most of the time and trying to keep their presence from the Imperium.

This should suffice in terms of rolling. We can elaborate on the rest ourselves.
>>
>>28018783
Nah, make him a former Sybarite who wanted to establish his own Kabal (as mentioned before), yet failed the first time.

>>28018784
Right. Actually, with the stuff from the three tables and the other stuff we came up with before (including the name). Now we need a good bit of fluff to present them as both that what we came up, as well as credible enemies of the Star Krakens.
>>
>>28018803
Maybe he's failed more than once and give the whole thing an air of, "This is going to blow up in their faces but if it doesn't it's going to be awesome."
>>
>>28018829
That too would be a good point. It mixes with >>28018766 very well.
>>
>>28018829

He used to be passionate about his schemes and plans, roping scores or raiders to do his bidding, charming the armor off Succubi and Wyches. Now he gives off the cold, frigid impression of a con artist that's been burned too often. This Kabal is his last chance at making it in Commorragh. His back is against the wall. He's invested a lot into this Grendel thing and the human Rogue Traders as well. He cannot fail. Not this time.

"Look there, at the one atop that small mount. Is she not beautiful? Of course she is, and that is why she is my favorite amongst this missbegoten species. I would most displeased if the Krakens were to slay elegeant, beautiful, mucus-covered Freyja here"-Archon Xanos of the Single Blade
>>
So I thought about the fluff for the Venomous Thorn Kabal.

Their leader is named Tersis Vindarel. Once a Sybarite of the Black Heart Kabal, he had enough of the politicking of Vect and wanted to fund his own Kabal, since compared to anyone else, he knew that nobody could usurp Vect due to what he was capable of.

The first attempt of his ended disastrously, yet it was mostly the fault of those he allied himself with. While many of his followers from previous Kabals died horribly, Tersis always survived, cursing everyone who double-crossed his plans. Since then he cut off from anyone except for those who would be of use to his plans. Now, after four thousand years of failures he became cold and pessimistic, though he would try yet one final time, or he'd become the laughing stock of Commoragh.

The Phorcius Sector was something he chose to start from scratch. Here, in the ruins of one of the now inhospitable of the destroyed Grendel bastion world, he constructed a well camouflaged base with a web-way portal to the Dark City. From here, he raided and plotted. Many Imperials were taken as slaves and he also started to manipulate the Grendel Matriarchs in order to gain some of those beasts as slaves. With this influx, the Venomous Thorn gained enough to build their own gladiatorial ring and attract new warriors. So far, the Kabal gained some wealth from it, but the Archon knew that if wouldn't be careful, then all he invested into this attempt would be lost. He couldn't allow himself for another failure like last time...

>>28019660
Incredible. Somebody remembered about the Locks.

>>
>>28020578

>>
>>28021596
Well done, sir.
>>
Hey all, looks like this thread was a success.

Anyone mind just bulletpointing the main changes for me?
>>
>>28022799
OK.

Grendel:
- Once a bunch of tribes, after their bastion worlds were obliterated by the Krakens, they felt back to the deep where their original homeworlds exist.

- After that event they became a unified species with giant living troop carriers. Probably they were working with Dark Eldar to gain such results, or other sinister forces.

- Star Kraken Tactical Squads use the same rules as in the Horus Heresy Book One: Betrayal.

- New DEldar Kabal created. The Venomous Thorn. Very recent, created by a pessimistic Archon that once failed in establishing a Kabal previously. Created a well camouflaged satellite base in the Phorcius Sector. Kabal dabbles with the Grendel, manipulating their higher ups and getting slaves from them, as well protecting them from the marines.

- Overall the marines became de-Mary Sue-fied. The Grendel were given more character and we have a new DEldar Kabal apart from The Enshrouded.
>>
>>28022925
Looks good, so what else is needed now?

Our main goal for this thread was to get rid of the Sueness, and it looks like we've succeeded.

What's the plan for thread 11? Writefagging the shit out of everything?
>>
>>28023017
Fleshing out the Kabal (the Archon Tersis Vindarel's story, his interests in the Grendel, his formation of the Venomous Thorn Kabal and his fights with the Star Krakens) and showing how much of a danger those Broodmother troop transporters are.

As well showing some shotgun action with Astartes Assault Shotgun wielding Breaching Tactical Squads (combined with using various ammo types).

That would be all. And then we'd go and make rules for fluffy and crunchy gameplay.
>>
>>28023264
Hey, is there any rhyme or reason when these threads come up? I was in the 8th ed thread, couldnt find the 9th one and now I just found this now. Any set time/date for thread 11?

I don't know. Was the Imperium even capable of building mini astronomicons before the Heresy? (That is what it is right?) Better to leave it just a remnant of the Dark Age of Technology, guarded with fervor by the chapter from the Mechanicus, who would probably not even understand how to build a new one if they took it apart
>>
>>28023883
It must be decided by the other anons.
>>
>>28024097
This is probably the best course. It fits the theme of the AdMech being "We don't know, but we like it."
>>
"None shall find us, or our sins, in this accursed Deep"- Reclusiarch Rochak before his death at the hands of a Grendel

"There is no place where the foes of the Imperium can hide. Where our progentiors, the noble Raven Guard, strike from the shadows, we shall destroy those who would seek to do the same to the Imperium"-Chapter Master Achab

"My, my, my. These 'gerendalen' have tremendously loud screams that match their great size. I believe I have found my key to renewed power. And look here, this one trikes to suckle upon the heel-spike of my boot! Come here, little thing. Yes, I think I can use you. I can use ALL of you "-Archon Tersis Vindarel upon visiting the Grendel homeworld
>>
>>28003304
Well this might work...
I was thinking that the major Grendel trait is "Survival of the Species."
They're not anti-social, but Presocial, and operate under the agenda that she who lives longest deserves to bring about the next, more biologically fit generation.

This is also how I’d been handling Brood Mothers; they are Grendel who have lived for Centuries to grown into gigantic aquatic abominations.

>>28004842
Titan's... aren't actually all that big man...
Big problem with 40k fluff is SCALE, everything is out of whack.
If the two inch tall Rhino transport were a single story in height, a WarLORD class Titan would only be 12 stories tall...
That's what, a good sized apartment building?
Plus we have to take into account that if Grendel Brood Mothers are purely aquatic, they'd be more like small Blue Water naval ship thus be fairly hard to transport, and clearly wouldn't mount Titan class weapons in any event.

>>28006468
Chapter Tactic: Rolling Stormfront

>>28018565
More like they ruined the Grendel's natural expansion of territory by kicking their colonist shit in, and now the Grendel core worlds are more than willing to deal with the inferior space elves if it grants them a means to deal with their crippling overpopulation.

>>28018738
Since I'm sort of seeing the Grendel having a superiority complex, they were probably more than willing to trade "slaves" for DEldar tech, as the Gladatorial "Slaves" will only weed out weak Grendel and allow the strong to eventually grow in number and Conquer the Webway.

Nonetheless, there is the troublesome incident between the Steel Castellans and the Star Krakens: the Velimnous Rift Incident; for it was in their combined campaign to hold the frontier against Chaos that the Star Krakens abandoned the Star Castellans to hunt down an enormous infestation of Grendel -- it is rightly speculated that the Dark Eldar were responsible for this sudden outbreak in order to draw the Star Krakens away from the Stell Castellans in order to draw Chaos towards the Imperium and thusly away from an Ork world which the Dark Eldar have arranged for Genesteelers to infest and where the Dark Eldar are drawing the attention of the Tau, who send a conveniently-nearby nearly-all-Kroot army to investigate something strange there, where the Kroot will eat the Genesteeler-infected-Orks immediately before being captured by Dark Eldar waiting in ambush.

The Dark Eldar will breed the offspring for a variety of uses.
>>
>>28029798
Tersis, I'm beginning to see why all your other cunning plans have failed.
>>
>>28027319
The problem with inventing quotes (instead of actually quoting something) is that they sound incredibly contrived. Especially when you tack "- Vech, on the subject of yanking his own dick." on the end. Just in case people weren't already aware of the point you were trying to hamfist in as a quote.
>>
>>28029798

That just makes him look like the Wile E. Coyote of the Dark Eldar. Making convoluted schemes that just collapse upon themselves. It's silly.

>>28034133
And yeah, I agree with this guy. That quote looks really saturday morning cartoon villain. Tries for refined bastard á la Vect, comes out as comically slimy á la Dick Dastardly.

Overall, I find Dark Eldar are really hard to write well. One either veers straight into Cobra Commander territory or they just become inscrutable psychopathic assholes that do incomprehensible shit. Anyone have any suggestion on canon GW writing from a Dark Eldar's perspective? I want to take a shot at it.
>>
>>28034260
I don't know any Deldar writing, but banging out a short story would be a good way to get some non-contrived quotes.

Also would baby Grendel suckle? They strike me as more of the "eat-their-weaker-siblings" sort of infant. Maybe it would gnaw on his bootheel. Which is adorable.
>>
>>28034329
it's probably gnawing on viciously, but to a dark eldar that might as well be suckling
