Itt: we discuss fears and ideas from our childhood that others might use in their games.

>when I was 8 I completely misunderstood what a soul was.
> rather than a human conciousness I thought it was simply a parasite that lived in your chest and fed in good behavior.
>>
>>27992233

Holy shit OP, that's awesome.

Can you make it in a game where like it explodes out of a person's chest a' la aliens, with a weird ritual or cultural significance attached to it?

Anon's lived a good life, his soul is beginning to morph. Let's get a celebration going.

That kind of thing.

And maybe there's this great evil thing that's just swooping by and eating all the souls that evacuate out of their chests and causes great lamentations to all those around?
>>
When I was younger I thought mirrors were windows to another universe. I thought my reflection was the evil me and would eventually come through it to try and kill me.

When I was seven I read a book on space and it had some in it about black holes. I then realized that everything ends in darkness and there was no way to stop it and I'd be forgotten after I died.

I also had a huge fear of blood clots. My grandpa was a trucker and said to me once if I was sitting for too long they'd form in your legs and then they'd have to cut them off. I hated sitting in school because I always thought my legs were going to be cut off one day because a clot would form.

Aztec sacrifice takes on a new angle.
Is there some kind of fois gras of the soul, where they force-feed you morality until your soul become engorged and they can get more days for it?
Is there an Aztec boy scouts association which works as a farm for overdeveloped souls?

When I was a child I was deathly afraid of cockroaches crawling on me. Logically I knew they were just big bugs and had no biting mouths or stingers, but I'd have nightmares where I'd be buried under a crawling tide of cockroaches and I'd wake up in a cold sweat and be unable to get back to sleep.

I don't have the nightmares anymore, but I still hate roaches.
>>
>>27992377
That's not an uncommon trope in folklore, actually. Pretty sure there are even scattered references to a "Plane of Mirrors" in D&D here and there.
>>
I used to be terrified of a winged night stalker, called the Window Tapper, that would fly up to windows where the curtains hadn't been drawn at night and tap on the glass.

Looking at him through the glass, would cause him to realise you were there and he'd break in and kill you. The only way to be safe was to not move a muscle and keep your eyes shut tight.

Looking back, my parents had a really shitty way of getting me to go to sleep.
>>
>>27992233
For some reason I was under the impression that my mother had eaten my little sister when I could not find her in the house once. The implications of this did not phase me at the time. Looking back, that was one hell of a fucked up thing to think about your parents.
>>
When I was a child, I was told of the checker.

A spirit that walked through the house at midnight to check if everyone was asleep, if they weren't they were taken away.

My parents were dicks.

I was also told that there was a man that stood in our backyard incase somebody left in the late night hours.
>>
There a trope I like to use about a kids.

As you grow up, you lose certain memories. Or rather you choose to forget certain things because the alternatives are too horrible to contemplate.

There is a reason children are scared of the dark.
>>
>>27992233
My mother used say that she would sell me to the gypsies or letting the Mörökölli take me when I was bad. The gypsies didn't scare me that much. But the Mörökölli scared me to no end. The biggest part in that I think, is that when I asked her what it was she couldn't really tell me.
Its just a generic finnish name for a boogeyman. But thats what frightened me.
Gypsies are just people, but a fucking Mörökölli, that could be anything.

There is a common notion that children are more attuned to/aware of supernatural phenomena than adults.

Perhaps this numbing to the eldritch is an adaptive trait?

Once there was a huge fucking bug, like the size of a regular persons head, that crawled across my bed. I don't remember waking up, I don't remember being asleep at all that night. All I remember is that there was a huge fucking bug and I cried for my momma. When she came in there was no bug. We checked the entire room and there was no bug. >>
>>27994133
I have to ask.
What was the rationale behind the belt thing?
>>

I have no clue, all three of those superstitions came from my Turkish great grandfather and his family.

Er, when I was a kid I was scared that the toilet would blow up when I flushed it.
>>
>>27992233
When I was a kid I believed that at night statues and pictures would come to life and move around. I never knew what they would do if I wasn't watching them, so if there were any near me I would vigilantly watch them for as long as I could because I was afraid of what might happen if I didn't.
>>
>>27992233
I had the fear that twelve-foot-tall skeletons were going to come when I was asleep and devour me.

To avoid that, I had to stay awake and keep staring at the door. It also didn't help that my room had no windows and tended to be pitch-black at night.
>>
>>27994446
I also believed that dreams warned you about places that were dangerous, so after having a dream where two shadows were standing in the laundry room, and one of them seemed to kill the other, I never wanted to be in that room alone again.
>>
My mother used to put tiny amounts of bleach in my food when I was "bad", causing me to vomit.
She said I was "sick a lot" later.
I was sent to the mental ward a few years ago for bringing it up and trying to clarify the past, now I live with a label of being delusional.

That and my father is still in denial of who his donor was.
The man that raised him has dark hair. He has blonde.
I was sent to the mental ward for that too.
>>
When I was 6 or 7 my parents told me to be careful when I was playing outside, because junkies would toss their syringes in the street or whatever and if I ever saw one I shouldn't touch it.
But they didn't tell me what a syringe was, so that night I had a dream where there was this big ass canyon in the middle of my tiny town and I was with a friend of mine between the canyon... and a syringe. The syringe was an orange-yellow thingy, crescent moon shaped, and a cartoonish face. It attacked us undulating calmly, and we just stopped it with our feet.

When I was asleep, a parade of monsters and ghosts were around my room, like a Wild Hunt. If they saw me directly, they could go after me, so I was under my blankets at those moments. I stayed like that until I thought they were gone, and hey, luckily they were gone. The only thing that made me uncover was go after the rescue of my teddy bear or plush toys, who was usually outside the blankets, that means it was in danger

I had a weird 'use it or lost it' attitude toward my childhood brain. I thought i had to use it on a daily basis, otherwise it would have atrophied by the next day.. and also believed that if i worked hard enough, i could "know everything".

Every toy i had that was in the likeness of some humanoid/sentient thing was kept on the highest shelf (about 4/5 feet off the ground at the time). I thought that was a pretty good precaution to take in case they ever came alive during the night, until i dropped one while trying to retrieve it off the top shelf. It wasn't lego, so it just bounced without a scratch.

I also used to do this weird rocking back and forth/humming to myself while trying to get to sleep. Through some monumental cognitive bias, i reasoned that until i did, i would never truly fall asleep.

(Preface: neither myself nor parents are religious)
When i was 10-ish, I seriously believed that the statue we drove by on the way to my cousin's house in London was God. In reality he was just some old robed 16th-century architect with a weirdly inviting pose, and my parents had a good laugh with the other side of the family about it. I didn't really care though, every time we drove by it i would have a nice little mental conversation about how good i'd been lately with it.

I've always had this strange psychological fear of things moving at this specific very slow speed. Whether I was in a car stuck in slow moving traffic at like 2-3 mph or so (never measured), or just laying in bed at night hallucinating endless blocks falling every so slowly but surely from the ceiling, this speed has been my bane. I haven't suffered from it in years, but I can only imagine that it was just my understanding of the slowly creeping speed of death. If you were to make this a game, it would be as if everything but the characters slowly lost speed in whatever they were doing, the music you're playing in the background slows to a crawl, and even the droning voice of the DM slows down to a creep. It always got my heart pumping, and not in the good way.
>>
>>27995116
Also for a time I believed that my toys might do something to me, some older kid told a toned down chucky story.
>>
I only really remember having one Nightmare in particular as a child, it was kinda freaky. Weirdest part was I had the same dream something like 6 or 7 times.

I found myself on what appeared to be a lawn of a typical midwest suburb house, green grass, clean white walls, things like that. Everything is nice and sunny, a chill place; Except for the fact that this house and it's yard are seemingly floating in space, and in every direction off this "Island" are giant, black gears and belts, like the innerworkings of a great engine. the gears were are all slick with a black oil, and the only noise I could hear was the churning, grinding of them turning for some unidentifiable purpose, like a blender slowed down by 75%. Standing on the edge of the Island is a young girl who looks much like Alice from Alice In Wonderland, staring at The Gears, completely still. As I begin to walk toward her to ask where I am, she turns around, looks at me, and steps off the edge into the spinning, grinding gears below. I run to the edge and find myself staring into The Gears for some time, looking for any sign of the girl. Right about here is where I wake up, after what feels like anywhere between a few minutes of watching to several hours.

I also had a dream that I was watching a cow grazing in a field for several hours. That's it, nothing else happened. It was the most boring dream I can remember.

When I was younger I used too think that velociraptors would break into my room to try and look for me.
Obviously by throwing my blanket over my head they would not be able to find me (in a very I can't see you can't see me attitude).
I loved Jurassic park and all its sequels as it showed you how to defeat and survive the dinosaurs.
Just glad as a child I didn't take it into my head that covering myself in shit would also hide me.
>>
>>27994911
Even now I have an over reactive imagination and the dark terrifies me because of that
>>
>>27995173
One thing I forgot, when a blanket is settling it forms around you and some stiffer ones only cave in a bit.
I assumed when a blanket caved in that was the velociraptors running after where they last saw me and upon encountering the blanket they would assume I left.
At that point they would be waiting around my room so I can't move or they would realize how I tricked them because velociraptors are very smart.

Oh man, reminds me of a reoccuring nightmare I used to have. I would be in a lab, and some scientists would, against proper caution, activate some kind of zero-point-energy device, which would end the universe. Right before the switch is flicked, time slows down immensely, and I am given the point of view of what everyone is doing right in the very instant before they die, completely unaware.

It may not sound that scary said out loud, but fuck if it doesn't scare me still.
>>
>>27995118
Now that you mention slow speed as a cause of fear, it reminds me of something. When I was younger I would occasionally have nightmares (and sometimes I would get this feeling while awake) where I was moving terribly slowly, but my mind was moving faster than usual. I felt like my consciousness was going to burst out of my body, but I had no idea what might happen then. It was really a terrifying and uncomfortable feeling.

I've had an Inception-y moment. I was once dreaming I was on a hill overlooking the ocean (It was actually the hill near Anvil in Oblivion, for some reason) at sunset, talking to some girl I knew about something I can't remember, the last thing she said was "Don't forget me". Then I "woke" inside a camp built inside a cave (Seemingly also in Oblivion, it was laid out in a similar way.) I reach under my pillow of my cot, pull out a knife, and check that their name is still engraved on the blade. That dream is kinda scary because I went a whole day before re-waking into reality.

Also, this song reminded me of it when I heard it.

Saging for this being completely off the topic of the thread, but while we're talking about not knowing what is real, I just want to say that for that reason I've always been terrified of being drugged (I'm especially talking about psychedelics here) without my knowledge of it. The idea that someone else could have power over my perception of reality is terrifying, and I'm worried about what could happen if I found that I liked the altered reality better than the one I'm in now.

I guess that could be a kind of neat concept for a setting, yeah? Nobody has any idea what's real anymore, so everyone resorts to their own coping methods and becomes defined by their eccentricities in an attempt to hold on to themselves because they don't have a concrete idea of reality to hold on to.

To this day the scariest dream I have ever had has been a series of dreams within dreams. Listen to this.
So for whatever reason in my dream my family moves to some kind of mansion which is super fucking creepy. I'm exploring it and it is huge and empty. Suddenly a bright glowing wisp comes out of no where, and I don't know why, but I am so terrified of it. I scream and begin running away. It chases me and right when it's about to catch me a translucent screaming face emerges from the wisp before I wake up.
Now I'm in the mansion, but it was all just a dream. I walk around for a little bit talking to my brother when suddenly he is dragged into the basement by the wisp. I go to run outside but it is so cold I have to go inside or freeze to death. The wisp is waiting for me.
I wake up. I'm in the mansion, and it's not so scary this time around. Well that's good at lea- the wisp breaks into the room I am in and chases me.
I wake up in my room in my real house. Oh thank god it was all just a dream an I can- Wisp.
I wake up. Phe- Wisp is hovering over me. This happens again and again and again and it was the worst experience i have ever had with a dream. What made it creepy was when I finally was awake I went downstairs thinking "My God that felt like forever" and my mom looked at me and said "Hey, it feels like you've been asleep forever." I half expected the wisp to burst in right then.

Thats not true. My parents never scared me with the gypsies to behave.

Probably because they were around stealing and afucking with us and I knew well what the gypsies could do to me and believe me, my behaviour at home didnt matter. My apparent monetary status, or how I looked back at them, however, mattered. To this day I always got away by talking.

Funny thing, now them are always complaining that south americans and romanian gypsies came here to steal the government helps and so on.

See, here's the thing, the worst thing I was ever afraid of as a kid was kinda stupid. People lying about me, it being completely unbelievable, me offering a decent counter-argument, then the people in charge deciding that I was the liar and punishing me for something I didn't do. And then that follows me for the rest of my life, people always thinking I'm this terrible person when I didn't do what they've been told I did.

It did happen, all of once, and it's made me second-guess my ability to explain myself since then, so I end up being wordy as hell. Which, as I understand it, makes me seem suspicious as all hell.

As far as I remember, I've never had problem with them because of their origin or colour of skin, just because they robbed place we rented as a club-room, attempted to pickpocket me couple times, and I had to defend some random lady againt one (it was the only time I got in brawl since elementary school).

Microbiology is fucking terrifying. Viruses are the original Alien.

>There is a virus counterpart for every living cell known to man
>The virus role in life is to find a match cell and infect it.
>It infects it by literally raping the cell. It pierces the membrane and injects all its DNA to the cell.
>The virus DNA then uses the cell to make more viruses, and the virus babies EXPLODE out of the cell, killing it instantly
>OR the Virus DNA encodes itself into the cell.
>This can give the cell new super properties, or change it.
>When that cell multiplies or passes on its DNA to a daughter cell, it replicates the hybrid virus DNA as well.
>Suddenly you have an army of super cells with new properties thanks to the virus DNA.
>UNTIL BOOM
>Millions of virus babies simultaneously explode out of the chests of millions of decedent cells.
>These new virus babies now how some of the original cells DNA, taking its properties.
>When these viruses inject new cells, it can share those properties with that cell as well.
>Until its time is up...

Viruses are scary as fuck.

Not really me, but my Stepbrother used to get some brutal ass cases of sleep paralysis, to the point where he asked me to shake him awake if I found him laying completely still with his eyes open (We used to wake up early and go build shit in the woods, I'd found him like that a few times and just assumed he was awake.), I guess it freaked him out enough that he is deathly afraid of becoming paralyzed and even said if he gets in a coma to pull the plug.

Jesus christ. I do not envy you at all. Since we're on the subject of dreams, a friend once told me the story of her worst nightmare.

She was walking around in her house, late at night, and opens the fridge to get a gallon of milk. Inside, it's just blackness with purple streaks through it, shifting slowly, with a slight vacuum like pull towed the blackness. She screams, and slams it shut. As she does so, she hears this crashing noise, and thinks the force of her shutting the door caused something to fall. She turns around, and the windows in the front room are wide open, no glass in them, with the purple blackness beyond. The curtains are slowly being pulled through the window into it.

She runs upstairs, and she hears this soft groan, then tinkling and the breaking of glass as windows all around the house shatter and are pulled through. She's panicking and running around, and throws open a closet, looking for something, anything to help. It's black inside, with purple streaks slowly moving around. The door shudders, and the hinges break as it is dragged into the darkness. She's crying, and the tears are slowly floating through the air into the darkness. The windows and closet have now been swallowed up, and the darkness moves further into the house.

Furniture starts to drag across the floor. The front door implodes, and the shards fly into the darkness beyond. She feels herself leave the ground, and begins floating slowly toward the nearest hole, screaming and crying. As her foot passes through the boundary edge, it goes completely numb. Her legs pass through, then her waist, her torso. She takes a final look around, still screaming, as her head passes the edge of the darkness.

Everything is totally quiet. Time passes, she doesn't know how long. Then a very, very quiet hum, like the hum of a computer starting back up.

Then she woke up.

A-are you me? Ever since I was a kid I was always absolutely terrified that someone would convince me to do something awful, as my older cousins loved to do, and then force me to watch my parents and all my family turn away from me in disgust. The shame and despair was very real in all of those dreams, and it was always something quite awful that I couldn't explain, and my cousins of course would pretend to be just as shocked and horrified as the rest of the family, and they were so convincing I would often find myself questioning if I truly had just been a sick demented little devil of a child who had managed to justify to himself the awful things he had done. Ever since then I've had a terrible fixation with Justice and the concept of innocent people being falsely accused. I find myself furious whenever I feel that an innocent person has been punished for something they didn't do, and it's part of why I do enjoy playing paladins.

I was just about to post about sleep paralysis. I would always get strange dreams/hallucinations when I would have it, where I would be in whatever room I was sleeping in, but there would be dark figures in the doorway, or one would be standing over me, choking me.
>>
>>27995810
Your story is what reminded me of it.

Since we are talking about scary dreams I contribute to that.
The scariest dreams I had is when I wasn't afraid of anything in particular I was just scared.
I woke up scared, but knew there was literately nothing to be afraid of.

I had a scary dream where when I was really young where I was driving a car, except I didn't know how to drive a car, or know where I was or where I was going or how to get back to where I came from.
To make matters worse my baby sister was with me and if I crashed the car we would die.
Not knowing what I was doing I just kept what ever I was doing because it hadn't gotten us killed yet.
I don't actually remember ever looking out on the road during the dream.

I have also had plenty of dreams where I am falling and wake up just before colliding with whatever I am about to hit.

I also have had dreams where I am stabbed to death, had a limb destroyed/dismembered which I wasn't scared or in pain, but just silent in shock with a feeling of numbing cold coming from the targeted area.
When I awoke after some time bleeding out I would usually find that part of my body numb from sleeping on it and constricting blood flow.

Gypsies or Romani are a culture of people that wander from place to place just subsisting. They eat what they can, take what they need without paying for it, and are generally a nuisance to standard society.

They're like a culture of beggars that, if you don't give them your change, will get their brothers, dad, and uncles and kick your shit in until they have your wallet, the change in your pocket, and your clothes.
>>
>>27995895
I actually grow up with Gypsies around, and while I would enforce the law, and better laws that stop reincident crimes and also stop them to raise their childrens with no school just because, as a criminals, I know they are people and I'd defend them from all the people who said some barbarity about them in this thread. And they had robbed me a few times. They are a bunch of mafia assholes. They need re-education and better law enforcement, not genocide. Also this hate and not talking about them like people just makes the breach bigger and helps keeping them there. I know of one or two girls who tried to study and left the ways of their people and raise no children like them but they had to fight with the power of their clan in one side, and the hate of everyone else on the other. And they had no blame. I personally think we have no guilt for the sins of our fathers, like I'm no murderer or criminal or slaver or whatever, and I dont feel guilty about it when someone tries to force that feeling unto me.

I feel I should mention that I stopped having nightmares altogether when I was about 13- when I got a Playstation. I read somewhere that people who play a lot of video games don't get nightmares because they see them as a challenge and fight back against them, sometimes using things from the game they were playing.

This was on the first page of google, although not the one I was thinking of.

When I was a kid, I had a series of abjectly terrifying nightmares that went on for years. They all began with me just playing, watching TV, whatever, when I'd hear a low, thrumming sound, like vibrating machinery. It always prefaced some kind of black "van" that might also have been a hearse pulling up to wherever I was.

For what ever reason, I was always absolutely sure that whoever was in the van was after me, though I never knew why, and that I had, HAD, to escape no matter what. I would break into a dead run, flee my house, yard, schoolyard, wharever, plow through briars or swim across ponds, rivers, just fleeing for hours and hours, all while that thrumming sound followed me.

More than once I woke up out of these dreams still in full flight mode, and woulkdscramble thought the house running and crying.

Not you, but it's the same feeling.

Some girl that was a year older than me followed me around the playground of my school for five or ten minutes demanding that I push her when I was, like, eight. I didn't want to, but she wouldn't leave me alone and I just wanted a quiet place to sit and draw during recess. When I finally did, I ended up in the office with her sitting there whimpering and fake-crying and telling the principal that I'd pushed her to the ground, sat on her, and twisted her nipples until they were black and blue.

I explained that it was a lie, but my principal's answer was, essentially, "Tough. Whether you did it or not, she's got people backing her up and you don't. We have to do something to satisfy her parents that you've been punished suitably. The best I can do is just suspend you."

Spooky dreams thread?

I have this recurring dream where I wake up and my perception is hazy and my body does not move. I can try to force my muscles to move but it feels like I am bound and there is an intangible force working against me.

The first times it happened were the most terrifying. I woke up in my dimly lit room and saw things through two perspectives, one was the perspective of my eyes as they should be and the other was a third person perspective hovering slightly above my sleeping body and looking at the room. At the side of my bed there was a dark, shadowy figure which I can't quite see the features of, it was moving very slowly towards my as if it were savouring my terror. "Oh, shit, it's a demon" goes through my head. I try to call for help but I find my voice gone as if no air can come through my throat, the shadow is creeping towards me. I try to move, and find myself bound as if something is holding me in place. Then I struggle to move my arms, then an arm, then a forearm, then just a finger, with all my willpower while reciting prayers. It's still creeping towards me. Finally it gives in, my finger moves and soon my body can too, my vision becomes clear as if a shroud had been lifted. I am awake and terrified in my room and incredibly drowsy.

Terrified to sleep but too sleepy to stay awake, I quickly fall asleep. Not long after, I awake again, immobile, my perception is hazy and the shadow is at the side of my bed. Terrified, I do the same as I did before. After prevailing, I constantly recited prayers until I fell asleep again.

It still happens from time to time, and the visitor is not always a shadowy figure, sometimes a disembodied voice which laughs mockingly, sometimes it's barely recognisable. Because of my beliefs and partly because of the influence of Warhammer, I can somewhat manage to remain lucid when I'm beset by terror when it arrives.

If some woman escaped from her clan to go to college, I wouldn't hate her. However nothing will ever make me view gypsies living the gypsy life style as anything other than scum.
They are so rooted in their degenerate ways that sometimes I think genocide would be best, but hey, at least I'm equal. I think sterilization of all repeat criminals and degenerates would be a good idea. Poor career criminals just raise shitty kids to become criminals or don't stick around at all. At least through mandatory repeat offender sterilization we could stop them breeding out of control.

When I was a lad, I firmly believed that, no matter what setting you were talking about, a magic-user must ALWAYS carry a staff-based implement, or else there magic wouldn't work. But when I saw pictures of Jesus, he usually wasn't carrying a staff. So I asked my parents, and they told me he didn't need one. Jesus, I surmised, must have been a deity of some sort.

Don't know how this will factor into your games, besides never letting your caster players not have staves, but I thought it was a funny story regardless.

My dad is a sci-fi fan. He's the kind of guy who has VHS tapes recorded off the air, first airing, for every single episode of Star Trek TNG, DS9, and VOY. And from a young age, I watched said shows.

When I was... oh, six or so, I had an imaginary friend named John. We did everything together, as friends are wont to do. One day, Mom and Dad took us to the park, and we ran and played, having a grand ol' time.

Now in this park there is a large sculpture thing, which has several arches and such in a circle (almost a Stonehenge-type arrangement, but made out of steel pipes and stuff). We played around that for a while, and then my parents called us back to go home.

When I got to my parents, my dad asks...

>Anon, where's John?
>He's right here.
>No, your brother, John. Where is he?
>Um...
>Did you leave him by the arches?
>No, he's right here...
>There's no one there; where's your brother?

Long story short, he manages to convince me that the arches were doorways to parallel dimensions, and I had traveled to a place where John was my Real Brother and not just an imaginary friend.

...I've not seen John since then.

When I was young, like less than 7, I desperately wanted an imaginary friend.
I put so much effort into trying to create one, but it just never occurred. I tried to take anything and create a person out of it, but nothing would "appear."
It actually got to the point where I thought something was wrong with me, because imaginary friends were a thing I had seen all the time in the media.
This feeling of being has perpetuated with me, even now in my life, but my efforts were not completely wasted.

I didn't so much as create an imaginary friend as I did a sort of childhood hero. He was pretty much Link in the Dark Link outfit with amorphous red lava skin. He was able to change shape at will and his touch was caustic to all.
He didn't take shit from anybody, but helped any good person in need. Not a friend, more of an icon that I sought to be like.

I don't have such coherent dreams as a lot of people seem to have, but I do get very strong dream impressions and "clips" every now and then. One of the most common is running away from a deadly insect of some kind, and then waking up in a daze whimpering in fear while throwing off all the covers and curling up into a ball. That might last for a minute or two until I realize that I'm awake, and that there is no insect. Most of my dreams go unremembered, or are so random and fragmented as to make no sense at all.

I was told that I narrowly escaped being sold to the gypsies by my father. Then my mother would tsk and swat him.

An old coworker swore upon his grandmother that the gypsies were guilty of witchcraft and bad magic along with their typical graft, theft, and so forth.

He later had an interesting conversation with a deeply religious african man that SOME magic could be used for good. The african mans beliefs held that ALL witchcraft was heresy.

They both believed this. Both were in their 40's or so.

Was a very animated conversation to say the least.

Call me generic, but the underside to a bed was 4D. If one looked under it themselves, all they would find is as one would expect: a shitload of toys you were too lazy to actually clean up. However, if you were pulled under the bed, there was an entire world of demons wanting nothing more than to torture and devour you. These demons are unable to fully leave their world, but are able to reach out just enough to grab hold of an ankle and pull you under.

>darkness
>windows that aren't covered by shades or curtains at night
>open windows

First: My room is the only room in my house with actual curtains on the window. And it's a six foot by six foot wall window. I cannot sleep in either of the other actual bedrooms without waking up several times throughout the night, because they have, in place of this, a set of flimsy-ass blinds that you can see through.

Second: You'd hate living in my hosue. My mom comes in at anywhere between two and six in the morning and opens up the windows in every room in the house that she can. Which means that, if I get up after she gets home, my half-asleep, naked stumble throughout the house could easily turn into, "Why is it cold... WHY ARE ALL THE FUCKING WINDOWS OPEN?!"

And it's never fully open, either, it's just, like, an inch or so. Enough that something that's a little on the supernatural side might leave on its way in, thinking you might miss it in the early hours of the morning or that something like that that snuck in would leave so they could flee easily.

In the case of plushes where the guardian spirit inhabiting it would generally be considered too small or docile to be an effective fighter, they are generally augmented for better physical or magical abilities. Terrors can't actually be seen in their entirety by the children they hunt. They hide as soon as you turn their way; their favorite hiding spots being whichever shadows are closest to you, which often means in the closet or under the bed. They give away just enough of themselves to let you know they're there. If they were to give away too much, they risk breaking the child's mind, and then who's fear will they feed on?

Dreams, and by extension nightmares, are the exception to this rule. Nightmares are where they thrive. They feed off of our fear, and here is where they can do so without worrying about breaking the child. Heck, they don't even need to show up half the time thanks to their fear aura, which is amplified in the dreamscape. During the nightmare the terror will be lurking just out of sight, letting its aura do all the work as you wander about randomly. Upon waking you look back and think, "Nothing scary happened at all? Why was I so afraid?"

Fear auras are why

nightmare sharing time? alright. so as a kid, my house was rather noisy. either the ac or the laundry was on before i slept, and so total silence was unfamiliar and rather unsettling. my worst dreams consisted little more than the unbreaking eye contact and lurid smiles of people i knew. sometimes the eyes and face did not match. the teeth were usually too perfect. but there was something eternal and wholly inhuman behind these faces i thought i knew. to this day, i leave the tv on when home alone. the mute void of nothing in my mind is the closest understanding of lovecraftian unknowability i can conjure to thought.

When I was young, I started to believe my bed was possessed by a demon or bad ghost after having nightmares for about two weeks straight. I ended up sleeping on the floor of my room for about 4 months after that, and didn't have nightmares.

When I was much younger, I used to think there were spiders inside of me. In my stomach, and I was afraid to see them in my waste. More recently, I thought there were "things" under my skin, in my muscles, in my veins, it didn't help that sometimes they moved on their own.

I looked it up and I don't have chiggers and I never have. The spiders things was because I was terrified of spiders, partly because I put some time into learning about them, there was no physical symptom that brought this on.

The other was muscular spasms.

When I was a kid, my dad told me there was a Thin Man who lived in my closet. He could scrunch his long, thin arms and legs up against his thin body and hide away in the daytime, but at night he'd creep through the tiniest crack in the door and watch me sleep. If I woke up, dad said, he'd take me away forever.

My grandfather heard about this a few months later. So he went to my room, and went into the closet, closing the door behind him. After five minutes of shouting and banging, he came out looking like he'd been through a tornado and covered in what was clearly red food coloring, but my child mind was convinced it was Thin Man blood. He told me not to be afraid of monsters anymore because he told the Thin Man to go away and to tell the other monsters what my grandpa did to him.

This one isn't mine personally, but one of my sister's friends was entirely convinced that your body couldn't replace blood, so it was important that you drank as much as you could every time you got cut to prevent running out later in life. She kept doing this until about halfway though high school. People started saying she was a confused vampire.

When I was little. I thought that when you erased something on a desk, they get transported into this other realm and universe. All I did in 4th grade was draw shit on this single desk because I thought it was a portal to this world. I would draw buildings that they will live in, draw the people, draw the villains, the police officers, and imagine how the world would be different after every change.

I shit you fucking not. And then this show comes along. The coincidence scared the living fuck out me.

I should also point out said grandpa was a Vietnam veteran, a USMC sniper who wrote letters back and forth with Craig Roberts, and basically was the closest thing the US had to a legally sanctioned hitman for the first half of his military career, but then traded out to become an Air Force medic so he could be dropped into strange lands to fix people instead of disappear them.

Of course I new how the human life cycle worked. Child -> big and strong -> old and weak -> dead.

Excuse my autism, but
>There is a virus counterpart for every living cell known to man
If you go by species, no. Number maybe.

>The virus role in life is to find a match cell and infect it.
Viruses are not classified as alive

>This can give the cell new super properties, or change it.
That is extremely unlikely, as viruses that jump generations take care to not make their insertions easily readable. Also "super properties" is extremely misleading.

>These new virus babies now how some of the original cells DNA, taking its properties.
Also very, very rare. Natural competence in viruses almost doesn't exist. The adaptability of viruses does not come from horizontal gene transfer.

Also you somehow left out the most interesting part, namely that inactive virus DNA is most likely a major contributor to all the 'junk' DNA in every organism.
Also if you think viruses are scary look up prions.

I had a lot of totally weird dreams.

Once I dreamed that I was home after school and there was my little brother in the living room, then I walked up the stairs to my bedroom and he was in his bedroom too. So I go back to the living room and he is still there, plus he is also in the kitchen. At that point there is 3 copies of my brother. One more came out of the closet and one another from the toilets.

So I get the fuck out. 5 more come from the other apartments on the floor. I run down the stairs from the 8th to the 1st floor, all the copies of my bro following me, more of them appearing at every floor.

Then I arrive next to the mailboxes. Copies of my brother are crawling out of the mailboxes. At this point I'm scared like mad so I run in the street, they are all running after me, I jump into a bus and there all the passengers are my brother.

Then I woke up.

Sorry for the broken english.

I'm pretty sure this was a dream.

There was a loveseat/small couch in front of the window in the living room, facing the street. Sometimes I would kneel on it, rest my head on the back, and look out.

It was in the Fall, teh grass was turning yellow and dead, I looked out, and saw this guy standing in our yard. Just standing there, looking at me. I'm filled with this terror that I can't explain, and so I duck down, and peek back out. He's still just out there. I curl into a ball and start crying silently in fear. My mother, in the dining room adjacent, sees me. "Not again." she says, with a mixture of worry and exasperation. I am still terrified, and I don't know why, but I know he's still standing out there. For me.

Why do you make me remember the fractal prision

I have a similar dream once, i was on a mechanical stairway, going to the light, go to work, get married, have a kid, and in an hospital bed dying the world begin to fold and blackout on itself

And then i was in a mechanical stairway going to the light living each and every posible choice i could ever make and every time the world blackout and fold itself near my death

No escape just living life after life ... until i found the mecanical stairway

But every time i get near the "station" the blackout and the stairway got me

Have you ever feel like no mater what you do there is no escape ... try live thousand lives KNOWING you have no escape ... no mather what you do, knowing the outcome of every choice you make at any point of your life

Until i get again to the station and look on the rail... it was like look a mirror but every action, every desision, every death i have was reflected on the the mirror

So i jump on it just before the world fold on itself once more...

And woke up... for a day i think i was still traped i was as tired feeling the weight of every life i live

some times i wonder if i really escape or this is just another life ... i never talk about this before

This isn't really a "fear", but when I was younger I thought I could form energy balls around my hands, though only in a dark room. I'd lay back in a near-pitch-black room so I could barely see my hands, then hold one up, fingers splayed as though I were holding something, and tense them up like fuck. I'd see this weird kind of glow form up, not really a glow, I guess, but like a shaped version of that noise you see when you close your eyes for a long time. It would build up for about five seconds, then I could throw it. After some practice I found it was different between hands. My right hand could form a coherent ball that I could throw or "shoot" in a line, but my left would just kind of spray it out in the general direction of where I wanted it.
I used to stay awake for hours doing that, pretending I was killing shadows.

When I was a kid, I used to have nightmares that started because of this one music video where a huge lady was eating the band members. I thought that inside a woman's body was a huge factory that tore you apart and ground you in to various other products (most of the time, beauty products) and then were shat out by her later.

I never trusted girls until I was at least 13, when I realised that no, girls do not have factories inside of them.

Reminds me of that one Broquest dungeon that was a factory inside a giant deathmachine though.

Later I found out that I had a dormant vore fetish, and that was the beginnings of it.

When I was kid, I spend holidays at my grandfather's farm. During cloudy night the area was totally dark, with no lights burning from horizon to horizon. When my grandfather noticed that I was afraid of the dark, he began to teach me how to fight with bladed weapons (knife, long-knife, hatchet, bush-hook).

After I learned the ways of blades, my grandfather told me that "of all evil things which lurk in the darkness, you are the most dangerous one". That was the end of my fears.

Back in 70's and early 80's, we were always carrying utility knives ("puukko") openly, and wore special knife-belts ("helavyö") and decorated colored scabbards at weddings and funerals. When gypsies come around to talk trash, you could hear the clatter of sheaths ("tupenrapinat") when older men were loosening the knives from the sheaths so that they could be drawn quickly.

Picture related. This is level of local humor.

My rational "this is a dream, my friends are scared, I can't stop these words from coming out of my mouth, and holy shit do these nightmare memories feel real" mind was aware of the entire ordeal and I only 'regained control' after I started smashing my head into the pavement, which is funny, because I only fell into the situation because my buddy apparently tried to stop me from trying to answer a phone that wasn't ringing and I smacked my head on the floor when I got pulled down to the floor.

I had an odd weird dream once

I dreamed that I was standing in a long hallway roughly 2x2 meters, with walls of pure white. The hallway extended to what seems like forever in front of me, and my vision seemed to be blurry. The hallway itself, however was populated by emaciated grey people in white robes that looked like hospital gowns.

Then I noticed something heavy in my hands and I saw that I held the 2 family machetes. I dont know why, but one thought barged into my head. I started killing the grey people, and they didnt move to defend themselves.

There was blood everywhere, and the scary thing was me laughing like a maniac, and a feeling of joy that I've never felt before filled me.
Then I noticed a girl grey. I grabbed her and slammed her against the wall, ripped out her jaw, and chopped her head off, raising it and still laughing. By then the feeling of ecstatic happiness was overflowing. It felt so GOOD. Then I woke up, and I noticed the my face was frozen in that maniacal smile. It took 5 minutes to wear of.
I swear it was the funnest dream I ever had.
And that fact fucking scares me.

Regarding souls, It seemed really cruel to me that when someone's just about to die you cut their feet off, and only the feet get to go to heaven. Because as we were told, if you don't go to heaven you go to hell.

With no feet.

Yes, but not the one you think.
It's actually that they believe shit without question if it comes from parents, or ones that have been indicated by the parents as being an authority.

This is an evolved trait that ensures that the angry face telling you not to drink the bleach gets listened to most of the time [less often now that the moron that didn't listen gets to survive], or the scared looking parent saying shut the fuck up and run gets you to shut the fuck up and run.

As reasoning starts decompressing and installing to your OS around age 6~8 you gradually start becoming more and more capable of making your own mind up on shit like that.

This is why they moved religious instruction to something you do as an adult, eventually leading to baptism, to baptism RIGHT THE FUCK NOW, and bible school at a young age.

It takes a lot for the shit that got driven in during "basic survival training" years to be cleared out, moreso if they're ideologies or not actually things you can check with facts.

Just as an example of altering what fears a kid develops; my niece had it explained to her many times that monsters are where our meat and clothes come from, just like in the simulator game [Tri].

So instead of panicked screams and a child that cannot sleep, we'd get a dissapointed comment about how there wasn't anything under the bed again.

>It's actually that they believe shit without question if it comes from parents,

My father fed me so much bullshit when I was a kid it wasn't funny.

The Tooth Fairy that takes them out so Santa can make toys for the really poor children in africa... what those lawn gnomes across the street did to the kitten they bought me when I was born when I asked why all the other kids in class had pets... [obviously they just had never gotten a cat]...

Yeah we get messed up.

At the same time you realize once you have one that that shit... It's trolling, ya know? And you can't fucking help it. Those bright trusting eyes are looking up at you asking what the neighbors are doing over there and the first thing that pops into your mind is already going into their head.

Oh, don't worry about it Leah, mr.Sorman's was really scared that mrs.Sorman might drown because she can't swim, so he put balloons inside her boobies so she'll float.

What? Of course pigs can fly. Problem is their wings depend on quantum effects, so if you ever SAW one while it's flying, the wings would dissapear and he'd probably fall and die. Hey, why are you looking at the floor like that? I thought you LOVED bacon and ham?

Seriously.
Who names their kid "Leah"? It's like you want them to be made fun of.
>>

Isn't that a common name? Why would anyone make fun of a girl named Leah?

If it's anything like my family the answer is "your wife".

Oh she'll have you draw up lists, but she's just passing the bloody time because it'll be months before she writes it down.

But the entire time it's all narrowing down to what she probably picked weeks ago.

OR nothing you offer up is good enough and she'll take a random stab you better not so much as ask an 'are you sure' about while she's still high as a kite and utterly frozen nervewise on those pain killers and epidurals women call "taking the pain of childbirth unlike men".

But that depends whether it's your first or second kid.

Not necessarily one of my scariest dreams, but one that's stuck with me.

I was standing alone in a field of knee-high dried straw, under a clear blue sky. About three or four meters away from me was an area of space in the shape of a cylinder about two meters wide and maybe ten meters tall, standing on one end. The straw at the base of the cylinder had been flattened, and the space within it was full of translucent red specks, all of them vaguely triangular in shape. They seemed to be drifting through the cylinder in circular patterns.

I stared at the cylinder, completely unable to move for about thirty seconds. Then I suddenly heard a noise like a few hundred deep male voices shouting a syllable like "ZOND" or something and I woke up.

I've had a done a few things that, as side effects, get you more in touch with how you thought as a child, and yeah jesus christ fuck darkness.

Like I had totally forgotten how terrifying darkness was all this time. It isn't like "oooo I can't see well anything could be there" its like "jesus christ this looks like a coherent barrier made of ravening maws and glaring eyes against writhing black skin". The fact that you even CAN go through a dark area at all without being shredded apart and eaten just by closing your eyes and just moving through seems wholly counterintuitive when you are in a state like that.

Is it possible this was some kind of time loop story and you were the Alice that just jumped off?

And yeah, I had a recurring dream when I was about 5-6 that some creepy ass chinese dragon thing menaced me in my room, and I had to pass a series of obstacles to escape. IE first I tried to hide, dragon ate me. Then sheets came alive and strangled me to death as I tried to get out and run for help. Then each of the steps on the way up to my parents room expanded out to some vast arena with some new terrifying trap or enemy, like evil knights or reptilian worms that jumped straight through my sternum, shredding it.

It took many months before enough nightmares passed that I could make it past all these things safely. I learned to dodge, matador, salvage weapons, and slay my way past every fucking thing on the way up just to call for my parents help about this horrible, horrible nightmare reality.

I got into their room, and they stumbled out of their bed towards me as green, gangrenous zombies. I could have easily cut them down where they stood, I had defeated things far more potent than mere zombies at that point. I think there was some kind of six winged laser shooting crystal shiva in there at some point.

But instead, I dropped my shield and sword to the ground and wept at the futility of it all as they tore me apart and greedily ate me alive.

Yeah, I used to be convinced my grandparents on my mum's side were vampires. Despite the fact that they're both Christian.
