Thread II.
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Lamia%20Legacy%20Quest

Fire, a burning village, a sense of duty and a hint of... disgust? This is a dream, you know that much. So very similar to a one that kept reoccurring throughout your childhood, sometimes it was just a bright inferno, being dragged along to where you know not, other times, it was a frantic escape before being surrounded by seven shadowy figures before you woke. This time? You see a torch in the hand of the lead shadow and it appears they have found something. A known face, younger, holding a bundle, your father is about to be set upon by these beings, you try to cry out to warn him when six gunshots go off...

You wake to the smell of roasting venison. Poking your head out of the nest of bedrolls and blankets you see McCain tending the fire, it is not the crack of dawn, but you still see the last remnants of morning frost fading along the hills. Its been five days since you set out to survey the property you found yourself in the possession of, and decide that the first task would be to mark it off as best you could.

This means that every hundred meters or so along the ridge line, McCain has been driving six foot stakes into the ground while you mark out the spot for the next one after double and triple checking your bearing with the rough map that outlined the rough edges of your property. It was a fairly simple, if tedious, task and you feel slightly disappointed that you did not find anything when you rounded the rear part of the valley. One point of curiosity however, is that it appears that the River must end on your land, as it does not appear to have an entrance point you've seen. You shiver visibly as you remember the large glacial run off that seeped down the rear eastern side of the valley, gladly expending some of the heating charms you purchase to battle the bitter cold.

"Well miss," McCain says while facing away from you. "From the rustling of those blankets I'd say you are up. Get some food in you and take a look at what I found." You slither towards the fire, trying to resist basking in the dry heat as he turns to look at you, "Look down and to the right and tell me what you see." You follow where he is pointing and see a familiar arrangement of buildings.

"Home." You say with a smile.

"Indeed, now lets finish off marking the property line and we'll get out of these highlands." He drawls, grabbing more of the sticks and untying Greenbriar's lead, "I've had about enough of the chilly nights for a few days."

After eating a oddly tasting breakfast(McCain by his own admission is not a great cook, but its still edible.) it only takes you a bit of time to mark off the property before you tie in with the ranch lands. A short while later you are opening the door to the house and placing your pack in your room. As you come out, McCain is sitting in the foyer maintaining his revolver and rifle. "So what's the plan now Miss Masterson? If you're gonna get back in the cattle business, we've got a few days before we need to get to Riverport and get some new stock. Sooner we get there the better stuff we have. If we miss it now it'll be a year or so 'till the market opens up again, I mean we could talk to the other ranchers about buyin' cattle but that'd be more trouble than its worth in my opinion."

Plan of action?
>Short quick jaunts into the valley to see what is inside, then head to the auction for the best quality.
>More detailed search of the property, catch the auction on the last days.
>Other.

Feel free to brainstorm ideas here if you want McCain's thoughts on them.

I gotta think that getting a decent start is too important to risk. If picking the shorter route is the wrong choice, well we've missed out on a bonus, but oh well. If the longer route is wrong, we could get stuck with shit.

Depends on the seller. Riverport is the big seller town all the ranches on the southern continent head to, and that can range anywhere from 10 to 20 a head for quality cattle. UFK proper is where the big money on beef comes from and where it is the most expensive. (Sailing barges can mark up the cattle upwards of 50-60 a head.)

"What do you think is in the valley?"

McCain responds with a shrug, "Don't rightly know. That river's gotta go somewhere, could be coming from a spring but..."

"Only way is to go and find out?"

He smirks, "Exactly."

"And lets say I get back into the cattle business? How many head of cattle do you think is reasonable?"

Here he frowns. "Well I don't know how much you got left after the last sale, but we had a small herd then, so starting up with what you have is going to be a challenge. Won't be anything close to one of the bigger name ranches for a few years unless we find a way to get more than thirty five hundred head."

Some quick mental math tells you, that even at the cheapest, best you can do with your remaining funds is a thousand, with nothing left over in case of an emergency. Putting that idea on the backburner, you think of how to go about exploring the property."

"Short quick jaunts would probably be best. That way at least we can get to the auction to get proper cattle, with the land we have, it would be pretty easy just to let the herd build up a while."

He nods, "That's what I was thinkin' too miss, though if we are gonna get back in the cattle business, we had better be looking for new hands as well. I don't relish the thought of being the only one to deal with all that cattle."

Everyone knows things happen along the river.
>>

I had been meaning to suggest following the river to the source when this thread started, but I was asleep. Do please follow the river.
Too bad it's too cold to swim in. Everything's too cold.
>>
>>28005525
River

I'm saying we get 500 head this year and like 2 hired hands, just start small and we can put our efforts into exploring the rest of our lands.

Then depending on what we find we shall move from there. Cause we don't want tolim ourselves to just the cattle buibusiness
>>
anyway, after exploring river, we should make it back and purchase SOME cattle. We don't need a full thirty five hundred, just enough for a profit stream and to sustain a few farm hands. We'll buy more next year when we're more flush and explored.

Is this sounding like our plan?
>>
>>28005638
I would say 500 is a good number
>>
>>28005670
Why not an even 1k?
>>
>>28005638
It is really gonna be difficult to show the exploration with the shitty (no offense) maps.

No that they're bad now it's just in get the feeling you won't be the greatest at details and whatnot
>>
>>28005805
He said that 1k would take all of our money and leave nothing left to pay help, or for gear, or for emergencys
>>
>>28005832
I wonder what we could use for a mount when (inevitability) go exploring in the mountains to the south. Or if a mount will even be feasible.

I wonder if the mountains go all the way to the southern coast or if they drop off into plains/forests.

OP, would the mountains being about at the equator be an accurate guess?
>>
>>28005818
>be guy who MSpaints maps
I know they're shitty!
I had planned on adding details as we went further into the valley, but apparently it was boxed off! This means I'll have to make a jumbo-scale explora-map!
>>28005981
>what should we use as a mount
Closest we have is a wagon, which won't work perfectly offroad. We need to find like, some giant desert beetles or something. We could totally ride a giant desert beetle, if it was big enough. Or a sand worm.
>>
>>28005981
Equator is roughly on the coast and is more in the ocean than anything else. There are a few island chains between the southern continent
>>28006072
Apologies, it was a matter of scale. The valley doesn't dip between the mountains, its not a pass deeper into the continent, just nestled into two ridgelines descending from the large mountain mass.
>>
>>28006093
well, I thought it -might- have been a mountain pass, so I left the possibility open. Still means I need to work on a more-zoomed-in valley only map. We can return to the other one when we exit valley.
>>
>>28006072
*between the southern continent and the ufk that are tropical. Wheras the Riverport and Snakes Landing are Louisiana Bayou and Florida Everglades type climate respectively.
Don't know where that part went.
>>
>>28006072
I would suggest using something like fireworks.

And we ain't in the desert, and we probably won't for most of the quest.

I would suggest either a mountain goat or a Nightmare
>>
>>28006132
neither of those are really big enough to carry us on their own, we'll still need to use the cart. Still, better'n slithering.

We're going to meet the land buying elf when we visit auction, yeah?
>>
>>28006206
Ain't no elf doing the buying, McCain's the elf.
>>28006111
If it were a pass, the UFK would would have made a very generous offer to your father. They are damn interested in what lies beyond that mountain range.
>>
>>28006206
I would say visit him to see what he is offering and what he is up to, but we aren't selling
>>
Anyway, now that decision making is done
>nest of bedrolls and blankets
Ah, that makes me slap knee. We probably take many, many bedrolls.
>>
>>28006206
I was thinking a giant mountain goat, but with a nightmares strength we could easily wrap around it. Though it isn't the ideal animal.

Maybe a giant mountain spider?

I have no clue
>>
>>28006345
Gosh, we probably just throw it down into a heap and just dive in and get comfy
>>
>>28006361
I've been thinking some kind of bug-a-ly mount, yeah. Mostly because the extra legs generally means they're more wide, which means more room for us to sit atop of the thing.
>>28006379
Fucking great. It's too cold, we'll be in the pile.
>>
>>28006420
Yeah, it's gonna be sitting instead of riding no matter how you look at it.

We would only really use it for transportation and a mobile platform. Though as light as insects are, armoring them wouldn't reduce their mobility much, especially with light stuff.

It would really be more of a battle companion than a steed. Though this is assuming we can find one.

We should ask about exotic steeds/animals when in riverport
>>
>>28006528
good plan, we'll ask around. Though, we probably won't find anything. We'll have to find our own giant mountain spider. Capture it too- no stabbing it with our enchanted sword to save our friend. Different story entirely that one is.
>>
>>28006593
Actually it would be shoot it but yeah. Do we get a bonus on interactions due to our heritage and growing up on a ranch?
>>
>>28006731
Animal interactions

But yeah capturing our own is probably the only way. And I imagine spiders would do pretty good in mountains...

Oh shit, we're gonna meet some dwarves aren't we?

"May as well find out where that river leads, if it isn't through the valley its got to end somewhere, right? "

McCain nods and heads out, presumably to swap horses as Greenbriar has been with you in the highlands the whole time you were marking your territory as it were.

You restock on some supplies, while keeping the small cartography kit in your pack, you opt to leave behind the heavier surveying equipment, as there is no way you can do any serious note taking on the course of the river in the time you have left today. As you head out of the house, you see McCain saddling up Traveller and before long you are off. Following the meandering course of the river into the woodlands. You note how broad but relatively shallow the river is here, and ever so often you take soundings of depth, noticing it seems to get deeper the further in you go. After a short while you encounter a slight rock face and a miniature waterfall, though you note that despite the increasing elevation, the water appears to be increasing in tempurature ever so slightly. at first you attribute it to acclimation to the cold, but the further you go, see off in the distance, a mass of steam. Heading towards it yields a tributary feeding into the river proper, terminating at a larger body of water full of what is, for all intents and purposes, a hot spring.

You a hear a howl, not the symphony of keening that accompanies a pack of coyotes, but a long howl echoing along the valley. McCain noticeably tenses, drawing his revolver, you bring his rifle up (You have yet to give it back to him since heading to town.)
You make your way toward the spring and follow along the surprisingly sandy beach.

You keep close to McCain as he takes another step forward. It is hear you hear a whipping of rope and the both of you rise into the air. A massive net, laid into the ground rises out of the sand encompassing the both of you as it closes. You twist around inside the net, unable to find purchase unil you find yourself face to face with MccCain, looking obviously unvofortable as your tail presses the side of his face into the heavily woven threads.
"Miss," He managed to say, his voice somewhat muffled, "If you'd stop moving I'll see about getting us out of this mess."

You try and relax yourself as much as possible, and McCain twist himself so that his back is against the bulk of your body and pushes against the fabric of the net, removing his knife from its sheath, you hear his muffled cursing and the sound of sawing on the ropes, but another noise catches your ears, the howl returns, closer now, and you start hearing the sound of brush moving from the far bank. You wonder to yourself who could have left this trap here.

You catch a glimpse of something moving through the shrubbery on the other side of the bank, a mottled pattern of grey and black flashes on occasion and then it stops. Everything is silent at this point save for the industrious sawing of McCain on the net fabric. Then you hear a noise from behind you.

<This is curious... The smell of the white corrupter is faint, but it is upon you little snake.>, you twist to face the voice eliciting some complaints from McCain which promptly stop mid sentence as he apparently sees what you were trying to look at. Some more manoeuvring brings you face to face with, presumably, your captor. Clad in furs, a male lamia is gazing at you appraisingly, the first thing you note about him, is how long he is. If you had to estimate, at least 35 feet or more.

My bet is that Citadel did something to all the lamias on that continent, so the local lamias can sense that our mother wasn't from around here. Which is why it only smells faintly like Citadel.

Not sure how much that's metagaming, because I have no idea what we know about Citadel in-character. But we DID take scholarly as a trait, iirc, so it might not be a stretch.
>>
>>28009696
well, there was a titillating tell-all about citadel and all that.

It's not our fucking land. This Lamia and his tribe where obviously here first and it belongs to them by right. That we own it legally is a flaw in the system that should be corrected. Let's not kick off the Native Genocide hmm?
>>
>>28011575
There is. A .22lr projectile weighs 2-3 grams and travels around 1500 ft/s. A .223 projectile typically weighs 4-5 grams and travels anywhere from 2700 to 3700 ft/s.

A .22 is useless on anything much bigger than a pidgeon, or much further than 100 feet. Some loads of .223 will kill a man from 800 yards out of the right platform, with a skilled shooter.
>>
>>28011962
We have the backing of the government so we own it. That is how things work in the real world.

True. Legally we own the land. I say that the land however rightfully belongs to the tribe that lives here. Not us who have never touched it until our current explorations. "What's he sayin' how much shit are we in miss?" hisses McCain, you shush him and continue.

<Sasha Masterson, and you are?> you call, trying to fight the feeling of blood rushing to your head. <I apologize for the lack of pleasantries but I would be greatly appreciative if you could let us down.>

You look to find a way to speak to McCain, but have no clear angle to see him so instead you just voice openly. "He wants to know why you smell of something called the north court?"

You feel the shrug McCain gives, "No clue what he's chunnering on about miss, don't even know that there was a 'north' court."

<He says he doesn't know.> You call down.

<Judging by what I see, he likely does, but that is no matter. I will let you down.> He moves into the woods and you see him remove a wickedly sharp curved blade from a sheath on his side, and fiddle with the rope. You then see him coil the rear of his tail around a tree trunk and slice the robe below where he was holding it. You jerk a bit, and then see him slowly and powerfully extending upward rope in both hands, counterbalancing the weight of both you and McCain easing the net into the ground. As you get up you see the... dog... wolf... thing eyeing you warily as the lamia uncoils from the tree.

<So little one, I am curious, does the seal still stand? Has the folly of my late sire been resolved?>

He rolls his eyes. <There are no lamias from around here. I was placed here by my sire to look after her holdings while she tried to convince that obstinate fool in the northern mountains to stop the creation of the Grand Seal.>

The mention of the name flips a switch in your mind, <If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, you are OLD. That business was settled a long time ago. And it was a lamia who did it, too I have the book if you would like to read about it.> you say with a hint of pride in your voice.

You nod, when McCain extracts himself from your coils and dusts himself off. "I take it we ain't gonna be diced by the big fella or his friend there?"

"It seems not." You respond, and realize you yourself are covered in sand, dusting yourself off McCain speaks again.

Next work shift is 5PM tomorrow, I can probably get this next update in before I crash. If the threads still up I'll try and get a a few more before I go in, then I should be good to go for a while.
>>
>>28014648
I think eat at our house wins here.
>>
>>28014648
Then i shall make sure it is up. and i think our place has won, does anybody disagree?

you could call a vote if you want to
>>
>>28014697
I'm happy with it either way.
>>
>>28014697
I had the idea of staying at the hot spring, but I'm equally fine with house. More neutral.
>>
>>28014697
May as well.
[] Stay here for the night and camp.
[] Invite Veles to your house for dinner.
Unless significant vote for the opposite, happens in the next 15, house looks like what we are going with.

>Invite Veles to your house for dinner.
>>
>>28014847
dinner, so as to speed things.
>>
>>28014895
does that mean house?
>>
>>28014910
yes.

The question is, is he talking about Dagda's Grand Seal, or the Citadel's?

And how the fuck is his mind still there if he's that old?
>>
>>28015231
Dagda's, cause it talked about TDWNIDBSIWADI talking with dagda about his seal and all that shit.
>>
>>28015231
I wonder if Old One is still alive?

Maybe he just figured out how dragons do it without going crazy? or magic?
>>
>>28015293
dragons do it by not giving a shit about forgetting unimportant things, like what day it is, or what humans live nearby, or the current popular language.

"Well, we can hardly leave someone who just helped us out of a net without showing him some hospitality now can we?" you venture.

"That's a good point miss, knowin' how them fangs of yours work make me all the more thankful he didn't turn out to be a hostile, yet." McCain responds, a nervous edge in gruff voice.

<Well thank you kindly for helping us out of the predicament sir, if you'd like, we'd love to have you over for dinner tonight as at least a small means of thanks.>

The old snake smiles, <You know, of all the people I met on either side of the mountain, you are the first one to actually invite me into their home. Consider your offer accepting.>

With a slight nod of his head, he gives a sharp whistle, and the large dog tears off into the woods. <Dazh will scout a bit ahead, she's been a great one for sniffing out interesting things, it was her that found you two.> He says as you reclaim your gear and weapons, something Veles takes a decidedly appraising look at. McCain saddles up and you make towards home. The mystery of the river will have to wait for another day, because you decidedly heard Veles say, EITHER side of the mountain.

>Break here, will attempt to continue in later... today.

today as in tuesday the 29, or wednsday the 30th?
I have no idea where you live
>>
>>28015336

30th, I'm EST.
In the meantime, feel free to brainstorm, speculate, or what have you.
Not going to say if you are right or wrong yet on the speculation, but what I have is... different.
>>
>>28015391
wonderful, that means I can go to sleep at some point soon. Good session, barring technical issues, see you when things kick off again.
>>
>>28015371
Well we shall ask him EVERYTHING. from tips on lamia shit (which may lead to the unlocking of our claws and poison), to the way across/under the mountain, to how old he is and his history, then about who/what is on the other side, what the spring is, possible Mounts for a Lamia. we got plenty of shit to talk about
>>
>>28015472
and teaching him how to read and about what went down on the northern continent
>>
>>28015493
>>28015472
All of that I'm fine with, but maybe the lamia stuff later, after we notice him using any of them.
>>
>>28015529
Yeah, i just wanna get proficient at close combat.

So:

Claws + Spines + whatever other natural abilities we can get = close combat

Guns (Beacon?)= ranged combat

i wonder where Wagon is right now?
>>
>>28015567
wagon is currently lodged in an impact crater on mars.

I think we should probably have chosen brawling at the start, but since we didn't, we should work into it. We're going to have to wrassle giant spiders later.
>>
>>28015618
i think it was good that we choose sharpshooter at the start since we are naturaly weak in that area. our biology supports close combat immensly. claws, tail, fangs, spines, poison, the other things i am still scouring the archives for. but some sparring with our new friend is in order
>>
>>28015664
we'll see how it turns out. Speed+sharpshooter is pretty good for most things, other than taking things in alive. Well, we can take people with intimidating trick shooting, but not animals.
>>
>>28015734
we can also create poison filled bullets/capsules or do some cross training with a bow for non-lethal properties
>>
>>28015808
good ideas for much later down the line. As it stands, I don't want to risk corrosion on our real good gun.
>>
>>28016031
Yeah, later. But if Black didn't corrode our weapons then it should be fine.
>>
>>28016118
it'd probably be at least as bad for it as using the cheap gunpowder. Unless we have specialist bullets and casings that hold it in until later. So, gunsmith stuff. Alternatively, we could pick up an old, garbage singleshot musket that can take the punishment and use that.
>>
okay, going to sleep, going to put my ranching suggestions up in case the thing restarts before I'm back.

Chemlab said we could buy cheap cows for 10 isens a head, but we sold our own for 25 isens a head. I would suggest that, since we are already getting too few cattle to run a proper meat operation, we buy instead a fewer number of higher quality cattle and run a dairy operation. 200 25 Isen cattle would cost 5,000 Isens, and leave us 5,000 more for farmhands, finding a prize bull, stocking up on hay or hay seed, building materials for whatever we decide to make on our land, and if we have any left over for luxury, maybe a flock of chickens so the farmhands and us can have eggs every morning. That'd be a nice luxury.
>>
Bump
>>
>>28018923
A Ranch and a Dairy farm are two entirely different things. That would require complete refitting of our ranch, not to mention moving away from the business we are familiar with.

It will only take a few years to build our heards to be larger than any one else's in the area due to how much more land we own than anyone else.

Besides, we don't get a Massive bonus to dairy farming from our land like we do with ranching
>>
>>28019036
Besides 25 is the price that they're sold to the UFK. I think it was settled for getting like 500 head to start with so that we have enough money to hire some help, but some gear, and still have plenty leftover.

Updates half done folks, may just turn it into the OP of the next thread because I won't be back for 8 hours.
>>
>>28022866
Darn. We are sitting at 266 replies though, so maybe not a bad idea.
>>
>>28022866
Good luck at work chemlab! Waiting on next thread pensively.
>>
>>28019068
we'll be getting the cheapies in that case. hope there's no plague or something on them.
>>
>>28022866
Your work are assholes
>>
>>28023072
10-20 for quality cattle is what he said. Average it at 15
>>
>>28023072
Selling plague/sick cattle is a good way to get yourself killed
>>
>>28023449
well, then, worries lessened
>>28023493
man, that's my biggest worry at auction. Purchase some skank hay, you suddenly have weeds you never did before spreading from your barn. Purchase a skank cow, you suddenly have animals falling over from unknown eye-explosion disease. I worry.
>>
>>28023529
Ranchers. We're usually pretty good about healthy cows. Cause if you weren't then no one would buy from you, or you would have to sell it so cheap it isn't worth it.
