A chill wind blows through the streets of London.

Your teeth chitter as the winter air cuts like daggers upon your face. Perhaps it is from nervousness, a sour cramp rolling in the pit of your stomach as the Clock Tower casts its foreboding shadow upon you. Or maybe it's from the bitter chill that has blanketed all of Britain this year, too cold even for all but the lightest dusting of snow. It certainly doesn't help that you're fresh to the country from a warmer land, and didn't think to pack for the arctic. Two layers and a scarf just isn't going to cut it here.

But the cold isn't important. And your nerves can be quashed. You are a Magus, a weaver of mysteries and wielder of the arcane arts - if you cannot bring yourself to overcome petty things like the winter's chill and social anxiety, you are unworthy of the title. To reach for the Root is to embrace death as a close friend, and share with it your afternoon tea. Hesistation and doubt are enemies to be destroyed.

Still, you wait a moment before stepping over the bounded field. It's magic washes over you, thick as mollasses and slick as spilt motor oil, no doubt telling someone that you've entered the premises. Your second steps come easier as a brigade of Enforcers does -not- descend upon you, and in no time at all you've crossed the snow-dusted courtyard and stepped through the doors.

It is much warmer inside, so much that you feel the need to unbutton your coat. Everything is old in this place, nothing newer than the nineteenth century, and as consequence everything is -magical-. There is no secretary or receptionist there to bid you welcome to the Tower, but as you approach the front desk, a black cat uncurls itself. Appraising you with its golden eyes, it licks its paw, before speaking.

"New arrival, then?" it purrs, its voice deep and weary. "Another year, another batch of failures, I suppose. Which one are you, then?"

"T-that's a harsh assessment..." you mutter, half under your breath. Admittedly, he probably isn't wrong. By your own self assessment, your character is the worst. Surely if there is anyone in this world who would buckle under the pressure of a Clock Tower Apprenticeship, it's you. But really, this guy could, you know, not be a dick about it.

"It's also a true assessment," the cat says, flipping through the book. "Now, if it's all the same to you, I'd like to go back to my nap, so if you wouldn't mind giving me your name?"

"Sajyou..." you stammer out. "Ayaka Sajyou."

The cat tilt's his head at you.

"Sajyou?" He asks. "That's a big name, over in the east. Certainly not a name that would send it's heir all the way over here to learn diluted mysteries and the basics of basics. You the second kid or something?"

You fidget. It's not that you don't like talking about your family, it's just that they all died horribly in a mad scheme to use the collected wishes of mankind to drill a hole straight down to Akasha. Worse, they and the other participants burnt down half a city trying, resulting in the deaths of thousands. So it's naturally a bit of a touchy subject to bring up.

You decide to...

"And I mean, even then your family shouldn't be shunting their responsibilities onto the Association," he drawls, not caring an ounce for the knives that he's stabbing into your heart. "If they don't just scare the younger kids off from magic, they should damn well take responsibility and teach you what they can. Even if you can't bat around the Family Mystery catnip ball, there are all sorts of tricks that don't dilute when they teach you..."

Tears well up behind your glasses. No, you are not going to let a talking cat of all things wind up old memories and dig under your skin. You're not going to remember the pain scarring Papa's face as -that man's- bullet fried his magic circuits. You're not going to remember seeing your sister impaled upon her Prince's sword, right before the fire began. And you're definitely not going to think about how you left Tomoe behind to die in the fire, that your own skin might be saved.

No, you're not going to remember any of that, or else the welling tears might flood over.

"I'd r-rather not talk about it..." you trail off, sniffling just a little bit. "But if it r-really matters, I'm the one with the family crest."

"Huh." The cat seems to notice the fact that you all but burst into tears, and doesn't press the issue. He does, however, tilt his head in curiosity and stare at you with a gleam in his eyes, like a doctor looking at a toad he wants to dissect. "Well, I suppose it's none of my business then, Ms. Sajyou."

He hops under the desk for a moment, and comes back with a key in his mouth, motioning for you to take it.

"You're dormitory is 341C," he states matter of factly. "Quiet hours are enforced by the Enforcers from Midnight to dawn. If you haven't blown yourself up after the first month, come and see me, and we should be able to get you some better accomidations."

"T-Thank you."

You stumble out into the hallway, glad enough to be away from that cat's stare.

What's more, you find yourself wracked with indecision. Should you go to the library, and bury your woes in books and research and shunting them down, down, down into the pit of your heart? No, perhaps not. Perhaps it would be best if you went to this "Lord El-Melloi II" who sought you as an apprentice, the successor to the first Master to be killed by -that man's- gun. Maybe he'd let you vent your sorrows there - he lost his family to that blood soaked cup just as much as you did. But no, that would make you look weak.

"Good going Ayaka," you whisper to yourself in the hall. "Always clamming up over the most useless things."

Your feat eventually drag you to your dormitory. You do your best not to meet anyone's gaze on the way up - it's bad enough that you've got these rivers running down your face. It'll only be worse if someone can -recognize- you for the childish, terrible, immature girl that you are. You slip quietly through the living space, your head hanging as you mutter a halfhearted acknowledgment of a roommate's chipper greeting.

Your own room is filled with bags, your bed made with sheets as dark as your mood. It's tempting to just throw yourself onto it - and who could blame you? A Magus may walk with death, but that doesn't mean they have to like it, and the wounds of your family's departure from this world are fresh in your mind.

Now that you're here, you're determined to...

First things first, you throw yourself onto your bed and give a nice long scream into your pillow, letting most of the bad feelings come rushing out in a whirlwind of futility. It's a surprisingly therapeutic technique, though you still think that you might need to break out Mr. Fluffles. You linger on your bed for a moment, a stray thought crossing your mind that doing -that- might relieve some of your tensions. You dismiss it though - however much it might take your mind off things, when it's over it all comes crashing down -and- you regret the wasted time.

"Yosh..." you say halfheartedly, rolling off of your sheets. "Might as well unpack, since I'm already here..."

It takes you more than a little bit of time to get everything unpacked and in order. Mr. Fluffles is the first to come out, a giant teddy-bear near as big as you are, that your sister got you a few weeks before she - and you're not going to continue that thought. After a long and drawn out hug, he takes a protective seat at the foot of your bed, happily protecting you from anything... untoward.

Your witchcraft supplies takes a bit longer to put together, though most of that is lifting the unwieldy equipment. A cauldron that damn near weighs as much as you do, a set of scales that take for freaking ever to calibrate properly. Your cage of doves and the chopping board, a facet of the craft that still squicks you out just a bit. So many bags of crow's feathers that you are still in awe of how many you managed to gather. All the trappings of a proto-workshop that you despair at the thought of moving once Lord El-Melloi sets you up with a proper workspace.

Your clothing comes last. Several sets, most of which are variations on the same theme - nice and bland, just like you.

Now that that's taken care of...

It occurs to you that your roommate probably thinks that you're a bitch now.

Normally this sort of thing would leave you clammed up, wanting to apologize but fearing whatever retribution she would have in store for you. Especially if she were a friend - or worse, a cute guy who you would not mind holding hands with. If that was the case you would have been reduced to quivvering in the corner by your own faux pas. But you've already had your fill of social inaction - the spaghetti has already dropped and your pockets are empty. You don't need to fear any social repercussions because the worst that she can do is make your life a living hell for your stay here.

Joke's on her, you already hate yourself to the point that you're amazed that you just haven't ended your miserable existence. Well, you're not that amazed - you've got a duty to your family after all, and by the time that you -can- pass down the crest, you'll probably have found a reason to live. Maybe.

You shuffle out into the hallway your eyes downcast. Your glasses, oversized things that fit your face poorly, slip down your nose, and it's a struggle to keep them right. The other girl is in the hall, and seems to be humming a happy tune - for what reason, you aren't sure.

With all the social grace of a stampeding rhinoceras, you slink over to the couch that she's quietly laying on, a book nestled in her arms.

"I...I'm sorry for being such a jerk earlier!" you managed to force out. That was a lot harder than you thought it would be. Also a lot louder than you intended. "I'm Ayaka Sajyou, and I hope that we can become friends!"

She looks up from her book, tilting her head at you, before smiling and pulling something out of her ear. Whatever it was, it's attached by a cord to something in one of her pockets.

"Oh, hello!" she... almost sings, a happy tune. "Sorry, I didn't catch that, could you say it again?"

Your breathing quickens and you're quite sure that you've turned one shade of pale or another. That's what tends to happen when even the slightest social pressure gets applied to you. Mama once told you that you'd grow out of it and into a fine young woman, but then she died horribly with the rest of your family. And no, you're not going to blubber through this conversation, you're going to do it like a girl of your age, damnit!

It really doesn't help that you've broken into a cold sweat and have been staring at the girl for the past thirty seconds like she had grown a second head. You very briefly contemplate following through with your gut instinct and running away to hide yourself in your bed and pretend none of this ever happened. And oh god now it's been a minute, and she's just sitting there smiling at you and... and...

You take a deep, calming breath.

"HELLO!" You force out after another thirty seconds of awkward silence. "I-I'M SORRY I WAS SUCH A COLD JERKHEAD EARLIER, BUT THAT CAT REMINDED ME THAT MY ENTIRE FAMILY IS SORT OF DEAD AND I REALLY JUST WANTED TO CRAWL INTO MY BED AND CRY BUT NOW I'VE DONE THAT SO I CAME OUT TO APOLOGIZE FOR BEING A BITCH AND ASK IF WE CAN MAYBE BE FRIENDS."

Wow. Good work Ayaka. You have successfully announced your presence and your trauma to everyone within a five mile radius, and quite possibly have ruined any possible friendship with this girl. Yup, there it is. Really excellent work there, making her cry - or, well, getting tears to start welling up in her eyes. Pat yourself on the back...

"That's..." the girl sniffs. You turn to walk away, resigned to yet another life of friendlessness. "That's... that's -horrible-!"

Yep you're a horrible person alright.

You're also stopped in your tracks by a dead weight wrapping around you.

You carry that weight. It is the weight of your sin. You made that poor girl cry by subjecting her to your traumas, and if the price of that is a ball and chain that rests upon your soul, then so be it. Spurred on with the determination to atone for your actions, you find the courage within yourself to leave your room and head down to the office of your Teacher. Yeah! You can do it! The weight of your sin isn't even as heavy as your cauldron - you're slowed, but you aren't stopped. You refuse to collapse.

On the way out the door, the weight seems to shift. In the halls, some of the older apprentices give you strange looks, as though you have grown a second head. The researchers who you pass only give you a passing glance, though one of the older professors - a greying fellow with crimson eyes - flashes you a thumbs up as you trudge down the path. It takes you a while, especially when you come across the stairway, but you at last find yourself in front of the door to Lord El-Melloi's study.

You knock on the door. Vaguely, faintly, you hear what you now recognize as a string of curses come to an end, as though the speaker had been trying to find the Root through swearwords alone. The sound of fabric rustling can be heard through the door, before it cracks open.

What lies beyond is a hawk. That is how you would describe the man - a hawk, trussed up in the clothes of a human. Angular features softend by hair that just barely reaches down past the shoulders. A cigar in his mouth, though he barely looks old enough to smoke, and that langley physique of someone who has grown six inches in just as many months. He cocks an eyebrow at you.

"Ah, so you're the new girl, then." he states more than asks. "Good, good. Now, I don't make it a habit of entangling myself in student affairs - what you do on your own time is what you do on your own time. But... I would appreciate if you didn't bring your girlfriend next time."

"What."

You'll admit that perhaps, just perhaps, the jet lag has caught up with you and you really should just collapse on yourself and not deal with this any longer. You're clearly tired from a long day of flight, cold, poor aline food, and weighty apologies that made innocent roommates cry. In all honesty, you probably should be cuddling up with Mr. Fluffles and spend the rest of the day wracked with nightmares of your family's deaths in the Holy Grail War.

"I'm not sure if you're aware of this," the young man - whom you can only presume is Lord El-Melloi II - says. "But... there's a girl on your back."

You can feel what little color remained drain from your face. Once more, you find yourself in a position where offing yourself would sure be convenient, but isn't the path that you should take for a whole myriad of reasons. No, you'll live with the shame of being seen -like that- from god knows how many people, and if they consider you ruined for marriage, you'll find another way to get children when the time comes.

You just home that your roomate doesn't hate you forever.

"Thanks for the lift, Roomy~" the girl on your back says, sliding off. "My professor's office is right down the hall! Soft, huggable, and convenient - I think the two of us will be good friends in no time~!"

"What."

"Well," Lord El-Melloi keeps your train of thought from going to dangerous places. "Let me see... Ayaka... Sajyou. Oh. That's... truly unfotunate." He shakes his head, and waves you into his office. "Come in, then. I have a feeling that you and I will have quite a bit to discuss."

Well, maybe in this timeline the Order of Reason and the Order of Hermes didn't clash so much and ended up as one united front against the supernatural threats to humanity. It'd explain why what little magic there is requires Hermetic rituals and arcane formulas to work properly, while true magic is slowly fading away. OR took over the OH, which explains why humanity doesn't live in fear from their wizard overlords, while at the same time, shit such as magic runes and circles still works.
>>
>>28068392
Or the Technocracy do exist and are just as if not more secretive than the Moonlit World. Combined with how magi are tech-inept with people like Kiritsugu being very rare; it's entirely possible for the Technocracy to operate under the Association's radar.
>>
Or maybe Nasuverse is completely separate from WoD and any attempts to link the two are doomed to failure and misinterpretation.

You don't have much time to formulate a response before the young Lord all but drags you into his office. Under normal circumstances you would simply chew yourself out for your ineloquence and then spend the rest of the day beating yourself up over it, but you're fairly sure this is the jet lag's doing. Human beings were not meant to cross continents in mere days, that's for certain!

"W-w-what's so unfortunate?" you manage to stammer out. Somehow, you've wound up in a plushy chair on the other side of the Lord's desk, a steaming cup of Earl Grey in your hands. You aren't quite sure how this happened, though - you vaguely recall a maid made out of mercury.

"Your circumstances," he explains. "Born the second child of a prominent clan, and the less talented sibling to boot. Of course, when the other sibling is born with a direct line to the Record, well... in any case, you know as well as I the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War. Possibly better, in regards to the actions of your older sister."

You look away. You know quite well what your sister did during the Fourth War, the monstrosity that she nearly unleashed upon the world. And you suspected this from the beginning - an invitation to complete your studies among the finest minds in the world. Right where those minds could keep an eye on you, and make sure that you...

"Ah... I didn't..."

The young lord waves off your concerns.

"I'm well aware that you aren't Manaka, Ayaka," El-Melloi says. "If you do not recall, I was the somewhat bratty half pint who informed you that you would never be a real magus if you couldn't even kill a dove."

It's another Nasuverse quest, set just after the Fourth Holy Grail War, covered by Fate/Zero. Only, it's a slightly different war than in canon.
>>
>>28068679
Fate/Zero, sort of. But this is an alternate universe.

All you need to know is that her family died in a magic war that her teacher was involved in, she's super-depressed about it, and is now enrolling in glorious magic academy.
>>
>>28068711
And her older sister got ganked by her own Servant because she went stupid evil and tried to release the Beast of Revelation.
>>
>>28068711
I've always felt that rehashing the HGW in quests is kind of tiresome (I haven't read any of them since the first or second, several years ago), especially since they're constantly rehashed in official spinoffs as well, and always wanted to see more of the Mages' Association/Church, so I'm glad this is a post-War quest.
>>
>>28068468
Yeah, that works as well. They probably rule from the shadows because the consensus is their bitch at the moment. They even let the deviants take care of their business because ultimately they're not a threat. Hell, the deviants even call their magic magical science.
>>
>>28068679
Combine Fate/Zero and Fate/Prototype with some other stuff thrown in by the Professor.

F/Z requires a wiki walk and/or watching the anime while F/P (where our character is from) is just a 10-15 minute video you can find on Youtube.
>>
>>28068763
There's a really good fic about Clock Tower politics and academic life set right after F/Z and ends long after F/SN when Waver dies of old age.

I use it as a reference for the Clock Tower nowadays, given how little of it the official materials cover. I like how it has little bits like academic paper abstracts, in-universe footnotes and thesis pages thrown in for flavor.

Google "If not Alexander, then Diogenes".

You want to come up with a witty one liner with which you could engage in the snark with this man. You aren't quite sure whether this desire is born out of a need for petty vengeance - for you still have an occasional breakdown about that incident every once and again - or because the bratty half pint has turned into a man who you would not at all mind holding hands with. Shaking off the rose tinted image of being swept off of your feat by a man four years older than you is unfortunately difficult.

"W-w-with the large red fellow, right?" you hesitate to ask. "The one you insisted was your brother, despite the fact that the two of you looked nothing alike."

"Yeah..." El-Melloi pauses at the mention of the red man, looking wistfully at a framed bit of tattered red fabric. "Iskander certainly was... something else, that's for certain. But back to the point - both you and I know that you're the type of girl who'd use her own blood for a ritual to spare a couple of doves."

"They're too peaceful..." you mutter.

The youn lord raises his hand to cut you off.

"Yes. But, the point is the other Lords of the Clock Tower don't know you that well." He casts his eyes aside, as if about to repeat a criticism for the fiftieth time. "And the Lords of the Tower don't particularlyy like what they don't know. So I'll be keeping a watchful eye on your studies, to make sure that you don't go unleashing any archfiends upon the world."

"So I'm to be you're prisoner, then?"

Yes, these. Sorry for being unclear. It's a cool ability but fat chance doing anything useful with it with just a human body not made out of SWOOOORDS. It's like having a god-tier drone targeting system with all the bells and whistles linked up to $75 RC plane.

If you didn't have as firm a grasp on magus society as you did, you would point out that it was your sister, not you, who caused the fire in Fuyuki and killed near a fifth of the people living there. But that's not how it works. It's not the death toll that the Magus Society cares about - especially given how easy it was to cover that incident up! - but rather how she pulled it off. In all honesty, you're lucky that you're not on someone's dissection table, as they try to use you to figure out what made your older sister tick.

Such is the life of a magus. You resigned yourself to that fate years ago - and have resigned yourself no to the near continuous surveillance you'll be placed under. Just incase you wind up blowing up like Manaka did.

You turn to Lord El-Melloi, your frown heavy and your voice heavier.

"W-what is your bidding, m-m-m-..."

You can't bring yourself to finish that last word. Too many connotations behind it that you would rather not associate with the (admittedly devilishly haandsome) Lord with whom you must maintain a professional relationship with. He finishes down the last gulp of a gup of Earl Grey, whereas you are only halfway through yours.

"Waver is fine," he says. It's not so much an order, or a demand - just a statement of fact. "Lord El-Melloi, if you aren't comfortable with that level of familiarity. As for your first task... hmmm... what's suitable for your first task as my apprentice..." He rubs his chin. "You are familiar with the creation of Mystic Codes?"

"Y-yes!" you answer, readily.

"Good! Tomorrow morning, I want a pair of lapel pins that can act as a communications bridge for two people who wear them on my desk."

You know, I'm wondering who the other two character choices were. Pretty sure option 1 was Azaka, but I'm stumped on option 3.

Do we want to?

It'd also explain why nobody cares about Zouken, who's obviously gone rogue (or worse, turned into a Nephandus).
The Technocrats could squish them all, if they chose to do so.
>>
I've got to disappear for a while guys. Nice work on the five, that's a partial critical success. Don't fully know whether I'll be back for more tonight. If not, archive is here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Magus%20Quest, and I'll try to do this on fridays.

He also did "Magical" Girl Quest and Cyberpunk Magical Girl Quest in the past, but both of those are dead and buried now.

It's a shame, too. The former had just started to get absolutely crazy and the latter had great potential.

And we had everyone kitted out so nicely, too. ;__;
