You aren't exactly happy to be relaxing to the tune of whiskey on the rocks next to an alien whose loyalties are ambiguous at best while serving another alien whose loyalties are also ambiguous. It's quite the lovely situation you've found yourself in. Of course, your shin hurts from banging into some metal object on the way to her quarters. This, of course, earned snickers from the other Sidarxi, whose sense of humor is not one you find terribly humorous.

Vetrina has loosened her clothes, now that she's off duty and sinks down into a padded and curved chair, the sort of thing you saw in pictures from the World's Fair. You light up a cigarette, which seems to bother her. You lean back into your own chair in the cramped room and watch her.

Your willing to just hang back and wait for her, let her reveal something about herself. You have booze in your hand and a pack of cigarettes in your pocket, so you can keep it up all day. You let the whiskey pleasantly burn down your throat.

“So Fritz,” she says after some minutes with her oddly accented English, “Why do so many of you smoke cigarettes?”

“A habit,” you say, internally cursing that she asked something so non-indicative, “I didn't really smoke before the army, but it helped take the edge off. I don't really feel like stopping, despite what Goebbels published about its dangers.”

She laughs at your response.

“So, what do you want to talk about Fritz? Any questions you want answered.”

Pick 2

>You want to know more about her sister
I am not a follower of this quest, so feel free to tell me I'm being stupid and getting the character wrong, but what I gather is this: We play our cards close to our chest, we're kinda cheeky, and we want the elf to either reveal information first or to at least throw her off balance.
So unless her sister is relevant, I feel that this is a good way to sort of throw her off.
>>
>>28068924
>[ ] You want to know more about the Sidarxi
>[ ] You want to know more about her FAMILY (Asking about her sister does not seem like the best thing to ask a woman)
>>
>>28069002
Short story is, both sisters are on different sides. The one we're talking to tried to make us mistrust the other one, our employer. Our employer, Yezrina wants a partially successful Earth rebellion so humans end up as disposable allies instead of essentially being an occupied province.

There's another side that would want to see it succeed, or see humans fuck up to the point that they can say it's not worth dealing with them and that we should just glass the planet. One reason we were invaded in the first place is because our planet is at a sweetspot for FTL traffic.

Right now, we're basically acting against every Sidarxi. We're like a triple agent, trying to toe the fine line to have us not end up wiped out and become a not-disposable ally.
>>
>>28069118

“So, why are you so two-faced as a people?” you ask, regretting your choice of phrase, “I mean, some want to helps humanity, others want to use humanity, and some just want to exterminate humanity. Why invade and occupy if you want to just off us later?”

She takes a sip of her drink before answering.

“It's complicated. It's not a lie that, as we expanded, we saw that your world was a hub of safe hyperspace lanes.”

“That doesn't explain an invasion,” you say.

“I'm getting to that,” she says, “We in the xenobiological community heard reports about humans and wanted to initiate first contact. This was 1905 by your reckoning. How could we not, meeting a sentient species somewhere between banging rocks together and a high-tech competitor, want to talk. You were quite similar in form as well.”

She continues, “Fast forward to, say, 1914 and your First World War. We saw how you engaged in brutal, crude industrialized warfare. That cultural tenacity is part of why some want to use you. On the other hand, we looked at you like a disobedient pet. It might make a mess, defecate on the floor, but you could beat it out of them and be left with a loyal and dangerous companion. This had enough traction that an invasion was organized, which also provided great experience for our soldiers and navy in conducting an interstellar orbit to surface campaign.”

“Okay,” you say, “Well then, why kill us?”

“Because some think that continuing our escapades on Earth is some sort of sunk-cost fallacy. Similarly, what do you do to a pet that bites back? You put it down,” she frankly states.
>>
“Were we really that much of a problem to a grand interstellar empire?”

“No, but a drain of resources, especially lives, that some thought unnecessary. To you, our losses were minor, but it was somewhat embarrassing to lose troops to such primitive technology wielded by oversized primates who rely on burning things for power. Of course, I'm not bothered by such things, but enough are.”

You mark some of her diction and grimace inside. You look around. It's dim, but you can see a number of framed documents, perhaps diplomas from some alien university. You see a few framed awards and pictures in front of official looking panels. She's someone who has seen a lot of success and wants to keep it that way.

“So, why does family seem so important, beyond nation and even species, to the Sidarxi? I'm sure we have our quirks, nationalism probably being one of them,” you say.

She brushes a long strand of hair out of her face.

“It's just that, a quirk. We've always resisted collectivization. We are the artisans to your factories. Take your pyramids. If they were Sidarxi, the builders would have tried to keep them as secret as possible and use as few people as possible so that credit would be indisputably his. You have no problem enlisting the labor of a thousand to power through your problem, not feeling uncomfortable in your success as an architect. So, we stick to the smallest functional units we can: the family.”

“That doesn't make sense,” you flatly admit, though you were hoping that she would talk about her sister.”

She smiles, “That's why I'm a Sidarxi, and you are a Human.”

“So, if we're not worth it,” you ask, “Why not just set up a moonbase or something?”

“That's not universal,” she says, “I'd love to study humans some more. It's not that you really deserve to die. By the way, of course we have some orbital infrastructure, but your biosphere is safe for us and fairly comfortable.”

“If it's comfortable here, what's it like in the rest of the empire?” you ask, curious about life in a star-spanning empire. The dream of a Thousand Year Reich was not even as vast as this grand idea.

She smiles wistfully, “It's huge. Imagine the vast range of climates of your Earth, it's jungles, taiga, deserts, mountains, tundras, forests. It contains that and more. Many people never see more than their own planet, more live in orbital colonies with architecture that would be impossible in gravity. Thanks to my job, I've seen more of the Empire than most will in their lifetimes”

“Space?”

“Yeah,” she says, “An endless, glittering frontier of possibilities. It's beautiful and humbling in a way unlike anything else.”

“Is there anything you miss? I'd imagine we seem so woefully primitive in comparison?”

“Don't worry, as I've said, you are more advanced than most of the species I've encountered. You've progressed beyond banging rocks together to make fire. It's mostly quaint, if a bit worse smelling.”
>>
“It must be strange. I grew up in a simple house to simple parents. I can't recall any air conditioning until the 30s, though it was around. We still fixed clothes by hand. We went to school, and worked math with paper and pencils, nothing like that array of things you have now.”

“I suppose it was different. Due to my family, I was tracked into accelerated and demanding courses. Technology was everywhere, almost as if you inhaled it with every breath. The glow of electric lights is nothing compared the vast megatropolises of the Empire. Life is and was bigger, faster, more advanced than the slow pace of things here.”

You smile and admit, “I'd love to see it.”

“You may well, Fritz,” she says, “If you aren't killed off by the end of this game.”

“Would you care?”

She mulls it over, “As far as you personally, it would be somewhat nagging, since I do enjoy these sorts of conversations. Collectively, it doesn't effect me, my family, or the empire much if humans were to go away. It's a bit complicated, but think of it like a dog. You would care if your pet died, but the deaths of a pack of street dogs mean nothing to you.”

You hear someone knock on the door as she finishes.

You raise an eyebrow, but all seems under control. She's not panicking, or at least you can't tell if that's the case.

You get up to open the door, and come face to face with a Sidarxi officer in his full service uniform regalia. They quickly speak Sidarxi, occasionally pointing at you. You have an uncomfortable instinct about this

Sidarxi are really despicable, sexy drow or not. They invade our planet because they liked our biosphere over making an extraplanetary settlement. They're willing to commit species-wide genocide in the billions for that comfort and because 'fighting humans takes up too many resources'

You decide to walk around, observe life around the base. If anything, that conversation made you angry. It was presented in a logical, polite, and utterly sociopathic manner. You'd love to throttle her. Her sister seems at least somewhat more genuine, but this makes you have your doubts. This may well have been the point. As you just established, their thought processes can be alien.

You walk around through some offices until you find an unused clipboard and some blank pieces of paper. With a shrug, you grab them and start to walk around, occasionally checking your clipboard and scribbling down German gibberish to look official.

You wander around, looking for a map to lead you to the sickbay so you can find Natalie. As you walk through you talk with some of the ISF people. It's small talk, and they come off as generally pleasant. You get directions to find the small hospital, and after getting lost, do so. That you wandered around lost is not much of a problem. After all, everyone knows not to mess with a man carrying a clipboard.

You eventually find her, still with a brace on her neck. It's amazing what heavy enough armor can stop. Normally, getting shot in the head would be fatal; but the thickness of the armor and the braces supporting her neck and the helmet turned it into a neck injury.

“Fritz,” she says, “How are you?”

“Fine enough. Are you feeling any better?”

“Like I got clotheslined by a sledgehammer, but I'm alive.”

“That's good, but it would be even better if were here to propose to you.”

She starts to chuckle, careful not to disturb her injuries.

“Didn't think you'd remember.”

I will say this. 2-3 responses is pretty low, yes.

But I really think it's better than being popular like Shadow Quest, PGQ or Strikers '89 Quest. I'm not knocking the QMs.

1. Power armor is less likely to develop due to improved armor. There would probably be more light tanks in the vein of the Sprut-SD and more lighter MBTS like the Leo 1. The air war is more of a contest, but a stomp.

It's a bit hard to say. Even third world countries have 1950s-60s cold war surplus arms. But currently, most developed countries have smaller militaries compared to WW2 or the Cold War. On the other hand, the decentralization of things like production could make it so you can't just go "target the big arms factory in north england to fuck over the entire British Empire". But then most developed countries are post-industrial since we have globalization. Target China+Japan and you take out a huge amount of electronics trade. Remember how much the prices of HDDs went up from the fukushima incident? This could change with time anyway though. I know Pre-WW2, countries had smaller militaries before they prepared for war.

The last question was this: Lets pretend ARQ!Earth didn't have the Sidarxi invade. They still invented power armor in the 30s. Would that have changed history from a real WW2 to today? Would there have been more discrepancies?
>>
>>28078717
I think that the end results would be similar because I don't think that one piece of technology would necessarily change the politics which I feel were a bigger influence on the big picture.

>You are now imagining Soviets power-armor troops bursting across the Fulda Gap
>>
>>28078836
Could definitely mean robotics are much more advanced than today. Since we're just really getting robotics off, and they have powered armor infantry already. Technology doesn't exist in a vacuum after all.
>>
>>28078900
Definitely. I was thinking more in terms of the major historical-political developments of the 20th century's latter half.

I did do a short post involving some "modern" armor in the QTG, but that involved more accelerated tech development.
>>
>>28078940
That was the ARQ-Drowtales crossover thing, right? Found it in the archives a couple of days ago.

Do you have any other setting info about the world that isn't too meta or secret, or stuff that'd be inconsequential to reveal?

Did all countries fight the Sidarxi, or did some surrender or even turn coats? Have they done anything about human culture or religion? Ideology? What kinda govt are humans under now?

“What was the treatment like?” you ask, curious about their almost miraculous medical technology.

“It was strange, but it worked. They put me in some sort of invisible suspension, like a force field. Then they shot me up with some 'nanites,' which got to work on my nerves. I had a bit of surgery where they placed this paste on to my vertebrae to repair the bones. All I have left to is wait for it to heal,” says Natalie.

“When are you supposed to recover?” you ask.

“Three days or thereabouts,” she says.

“Can't wait to see you back,” you say.

You grasp her hand, and lean in to give her a hug.

“Let's kick some ass,” she says.

You leave her room with a wave and a wide grin, picking up your clipboard of authority, and start walking around.

Staying here too long is just going to cause trouble, we should probably just head back.

I'd like a tiebreaker or something else to give me a clear direction.

Er, that should be to go back. I misread Vetrina for Yezrina
>>
You walk around the base until you come close to Vetrina's quarters. Nobody seems to pay you much mind. You get smaller around the Sidarxi, and act with purpose around the humans. It's a piece of cake. However, as you get closer, you vaguely here conversation from the behind the door. It's hushed and spoken in the Sidarxi tongue, but you might be able to understand it; you just need to be quiet and rack your brain for your knowledge of the language.

You strain your ears as you try to catch it, but they're speaking in that low Sidarxi tone which is so hard to understand beyond a few feet. Still, the conversation, though you cannot understand one whit of it, continues without interruption.

You stay until you hear the conversation stop. You realize that your presence right next to the door could be an issue if that officer comes out. With your heart pounding, you make a split second decision

Knock, respectful distance from the door.
>>
>>28078988
Expanding on this, I assume the Sidarxi were surprised about the nukes? IRL, the nuke technology was only leaked because the British & Americans willingly let an open communist join the project and they weren't quite aware of the spying the Soviets were doing.

You put your hands in your pocket and walk away. You hope your pace isn't too brisk as you round the corner. You are careful to avoid hitting things in in the dark which would immediately reveal your position.

You hear the door creak open, and your heart skips another beat. You quickly round the corner of the hall and keep walking, softly but at a brisk pace. The footsteps come near and you run. You can't hear anything between your footsteps and the wind.

You look behind you as you step outside into the moonlit night. Many buildings glow from uncovered windows in contrast to the blacked out city in the distance. You round a corner and wait, letting yourself calm down. Some time afterwards, you see that officer from before walk out and examine the area. It's almost as if he looks right at you and smiles.

Once he leaves, you feel your stomach rumble and realize that you need to find somewhere to sleep and maybe eat. This hunger doesn't even compare to that lack of supplies on that haggard retreat from the East.

You walk off, following that instinctual growl in your stomach. You hear the hum of music as you approach a dimly lit hut. As you open the door, you smell a wave of cigarettes smoke, alcohol, and food. You hear the jazz music playing, emanating as clearly as a live band from tiny speakers.

You pull up a chair at the bar under the red light, and order a hamburger and beer. The crowd is mixed. The humans conglomerate in one area and the Sidarxi in another. You hear the buzz of a dozen hushed conversations around small tables. The beer comes first, and you take your first sip of the lager. There are all sorts of worries about Vetrina and her friend and the war, but that doesn't matter. You're still alive.

Leaning back, you think to yourself, “Now, what choice morsels can I learn here?”

Walk up to a mixed crowd, if there is one. Otherwise, see if theres a Sidarxi or Human we know. If not, then human

It takes place after an unsuccessful rebellion ends in an agreement to give Earth some independence in exchange for providing military manpower. The "Star Wars" mentioned are against bug aliens not unlike the Ants of SST or the BETA of Muv-Luv. These take place in the mid to late 70s. Here, the humans cobble together enough surplus alien tech to start manufacturing it. By the end of it, they've become a minor military power with an unparalleled expertise in power armor operations. Using foreign diplomatic pressure as leverage, the Sidarxi Empire relinquishes their claim on Earth by the mid to late 1980s. With much more advanced space technology, they start to explore and colonize the stars, where (in that AU) they encounter the DT drow in the late-90s, early-2000s.

>>28086982

They were. They had their ideas, but they didn't expect one to be rushed into service and paid dearly for that mistake at Hamburg.
>>
Interesting situation.

I have not read through all the archive, but considering the aims of this game discerned from in the thread its kind of impossible to do it as a one man job.

Did you find or are in the process of finding some organization or conspiracy to back up your play f you can get all your ducks in a row?

With regards to your earlier post, they do exist; and some sort of bleeding heart probably does exist. They may appear, but this depends on how the story goes.

Yes, because, as I mentioned earlier, I was asking out of curiosity if all the "elf's slave, wut do" and "give her the d" stuff was a joke or not. I know from experience that it's not something I'm particularly comfortable writing.
