As we were passing through the visitor's portion of the grove, Veila turned to me and said "Hey, the other girls are in the tavern. Want to join us and get some real food in you?"

Right then, I wanted nothing more than to just sleep for an age, but food and company did sound appealing so I agreed. As I entered the tavern, I saw the girls at a large table in the corner, as I was about to head over, the sound of clapping came from my left. I turned to see Gaël standing there, a look of awe and amusement on his face. He gave me a small bow and said "Well done Sir Knight! Well done! Six women? That's a deed that will last the ages, Good Knight!"

I glared at the man, "How exactly did you know…"

"I didn't until just now. However I did see your women sitting here, nursing their drinks and such and hotly debating over the order of something. Then one left and returned with a flushed and satisfied look on her face, then another, and then another., and so on until the last one came back and look who's here but you! So I hazarded a guess…"

"And I confirmed it. That's… that's just great."

Gaël simply shrugged. "Either way I came to say congratulations on your achievement!"

I sighed, "What are you doing here anyways, Gaël? I expected you to be in that barmaid's bed by now."

Gaël looked away uncomfortably, "That… that didn't quite work out. Just because she liked my stories doesn’t mean she likes me after all…"
>>
>>28072451

I'm here. I still think this is amazing. As for thoughts, personally, I would have interrupted the marathon after Aimèe or Felìcita to give both the knight, and you, a rest. Six in a row is just... Inhuman. Wouldn't have had to be anything major. Something like the knight running into an old friend on the way to the bathroom, our favorite little alchemist catching up to the group, explosively, or something to just add a bit of humor and break tempo. 'Cause seriously, six. The knight must have enchanted balls or something.

Also, I think it would have been interesting for one of the girls to decide she doesn't want to share, and decides to stay out of the arrangement. Not out of the group, but not in the "group". I just can't see ALL of them being cool with it. If I had to pick out one to do so, I'd think Rina would be the most likely candidate for that.

Other than that, I think this is one of the most fun stories I've read in a long time. So keep on being awesome.
>>
>>28072451

As am I. I've been enjoying your writing, though I find the inexplicable attachment of all of these women to the knight to feel a bit forced. As far as we know his dick isn't magic, but girls keep falling on it hard for various reasons.

Don't get me wrong, I love the genre subversion of the harem owner not playing the victim for once. I'm just hoping that now that the shark has been jumped on sex that more attention will be paid to the story.

I felt unexpectedly bad for the man, something about his tone told me that this had happened before, "I'm sorry to hear that. It was a good story, even if it makes my life difficult and is inaccurate."

Gaël wrapped his arm around my shoulder and leaned in, I could smell the alcohol on his breath and it wasn't a pleasant sensation, "Heh. Thanks. But I didn't come up to dwell on my failures! I'm more interested in your night. Must have been fun, eh?"

I carefully removed Gaël's arm from myself and stepped away from him, "Yeah it was. I'll have to tell you about it sometime, but now I've got to go. I'll talk to you later.

Fortunately Gaël seemed to take the hint, "Go on you, I woudn't want to be talking to me either when you have a table full of beautiful women waiting for you. See you around Sir Knight!" and with that he staggered out the door into the night.

I sat down at the table and a tired looking waitress came over. She looked at me and said, "What can I get you your lordship?"

"What do you have for dinner?"

"…We don't. Do you know what time it is?"

"….No I don’t. Sorry, I've had a long and busy night."

"Well the good news is that your nights over, it's actually just before dawn now. I could get you some eggs and bacon if you'd like?"

"That sounds nice. I'll do that. Thank you."

As the waitress left I turned to see the women looking at me, I felt unexpectedly self conscious. "So… did everyone have a good time?"

There was a small chuckling around the table at that, but the awkwardness was defused.

Veila tilted her head and looked at me with a sly expression. "So, Sir Knight… out of the six of us who would you say was-"

I shook my head, "I'm just going to cut you off here Veila. I'm not getting into comparisons and ratings with you ladies so don't ask."

Martina smiled, "So… what do you have planned next Sir Knight?"

I shook my head again, "Not much. I'm planning to eat, go to bed, sleep until tomorrow morning, find an entire ice house for my lower body, and then soak in a hot spring until I recover fully. Then we'll talk."

We made more small talk while I ate. When I finished, I let the ladies escort me to our cabin where I left them to briefly update you, journal. Now I'm going to get some rest. I need it.

/tg/ etiquette question guys,

I'm a bit of a newfag still, so would it be helpful and relevant to show my pastebins to the Weekend Smut thread or would that be just self promoting and gauche?

Thanks,

Knight of the Realm
>>
>>28074506
throw them a link to the pastebins, can't hurt to get more eyes on it, critiquing it or whatnot
>>
>>28074506
I'd ask about it first, and relay your concerns.
If they're fine with it, fire away.

Though, from having lurked a few of those threads, I am genuinely worried about these threads coming to the attention of THAT namefag.
You really don't need that sort of toxic influence.

Dear Journal,

These last two weeks have been interesting. The morning after my climactic first day here I claimed that I would sleep until the next morning. I didn't expect to be telling the truth, but evidently I was more worn out than I thought.

I woke up early the next morning and set about getting ready for the day. I drew some water for a bath and cleaned myself. While doing so I noticed several smeared lipstick marks from where the girls had evidently wished me goodnight. I chuckled as I washed them off, wondering why there were only five until I spotted a sixth kiss, far lower on my body in what could only be Veila's shade of lipstick. I decided not to mention that one to the other ladies and washed it off as well.

I was trying to decide whether or not to wear my armor that day when Aimée came in from her side room. "Hello Sir Knight. You slept well."

"Evidently I did. You ladies really wore me out. So what did I miss?"

"Oh not much. Just all of us deciding that we cared deeply for each other and holding an all girl orgy," seeing the startled look on my face Aimée smiled and chuckled, "relax Sir Knight, I was just joking. We really just spent the day at the pools and around the grove. Didn't do a lot, it's nice and relaxing up here."

"Good. That's the reason we came after all. We could use a break from insane archmages, megalomaniac generals, sociopathic mercenaries, and mislead elven guards."

"You forgot power-hungry dragon dictators." I turned around to see Martina waking up.

"A good morning to you too, Martina. Sorry I missed you all yesterday."

She smiled back, "You deserved a rest."

"Thanks. Say, does anyone know whether Siegbert got our letter? I'd hate for him to be out looking for us in the wild."

Aimée nodded, "We got a response yesterday. He should be arriving sometime tomorrow. Also, that Gaël fellow wants to talk to you about something. He wouldn’t say what though."

I sighed, "He probably wants tips on picking up women. I never thought I'd see the day when I could teach a bard about how to do that…"

Aimée perked up, "He's a bard? Huh. I suppose it makes sense, with all the stories, but he really doesn’t seem the type."

"Yeah. I know. But I suppose I should see what he wants."

I waited for the rest of the women to wake up, did some brief catching up with them and then headed towards the tavern, where I expected Gaël to be.

Sure enough, he was in the tavern, telling some story to some travelers who were passing bye. I didn't pay much attention to the details, but at least it wasn't about me this time. As Gaël finished his tale, he held out his hat and some of the audience put some coins in. As they filtered out, he removed the coins and started counting them. From what I could see, it wasn't a lot of money, but it would be enough to live on at least. Gaël sighed and dropped the coins in his pouch and began to get up.

"Don't leave just yet Gaël. I heard you wanted to talk to me?"

"Oh hello Sir Knight! I didn’t catch you yesterday."

"Yeah. I slept in… a lot."

"So… Sir Knight…"

I waited, Gaël clearly had something on his mind.

"Umm… I was wondering if… I… err…"

I sighed, I think I knew where this was heading, "Look Gaël. If you want to join us I would have to check with the rest of my group first. And furthermore some of them are not here. If you're still interested in ten days, come find me and I'll see what they think. All right?"

Gaël sighed with some relief, "How did you… I guess I am that transparent aren't I? I would like to see this adventure you're on, sounds like quite a quest."

"And I'm sure it has nothing to do with the women I evidently attract."

"Not at all, although I'm sure that eventually one will show up that might be attracted to me…"

"Right. I'll let you know what the group thinks."

I left the tavern to find the girls debating what to do that day. I have to admit that it pleased me quite a bit. In Albero Città each of the girls went their own way to do their own thing. Now they evidently were making plans as a group. Even if they decided to split up, they would at least be working together and have some idea of what each other are doing. That could only help in the long run.

Felìcita was the first to spot me, "Master Knight, we're over here!" I nodded and headed over.

"Hello ladies, how are you doing on this lovely day?"

That got a few chuckles at least. Then Sieghild turned to me and asked, "So. What did the archer guy want from you?"

"Well… he actually wants to join us on our mission."

Veila raised an eyebrow, "Huh. From the way this Gaël fellow was chatting up the ladies, I didn't think he would bend that way…"

I groaned and laid my head in the palm of my hand, "Not everyone who travels with me wants to screw me."

Rina raised her eyebrows, "Oh? Such as?"

"Well there's Siegbert… and… and…"

Martina got in on it now, "And?"

"And Gaël if he joins." I finished rather lamely.

I coughed and continued, "So I told Gaël that I had to make sure that it was okay with everyone first. Obviously I need to wait for Siegbert to show up to give him an answer but I figured I'd ask you now."

Sieghild spoke up first, "Well… Siegbert won't complain about another man in the group. He's been feeling a little left out as it is."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

Sieghild sighed, "Well… look at the group dynamic." She pointed at me, "It's you, your ladies," she moved her hand to encompass the entire group of women, "and Siegbert tagging along."

"It's not like that at all!" I protested.

Sieghild nodded, "No, but there are… activities that you do with us that Siegbert wouldn't be involved in, and he's okay with that but it does kind of leave him on the group's periphery. I think he wouldn't mind others that he could interact with more."

I felt like a fool. "I didn't know he felt excluded by us…" I began.

"Not excluded by us exactly. It's just that he recognizes that the group is otherwise built around attraction to you and that means that he doesn’t have a part in a lot of the group's interplay and dynamic. Adding another guy would create a bit of a dynamic apart from that."

At this point everyone was blushing a little. I felt like an idiot for not realizing how marginalized Siegbert's role in our group was and everyone else was feeling embarrassed about the whole "the group is otherwise built around attraction to you" bit and Sieghild was realizing that she just created the single most awkward moment of our group's history.

Sieghild noticed this and shuffled her feet noticeably, "Err… I didn’t mean to suggest that the attraction to Sir Knight was our only reason for being here, obviously we're all here for our own reasons. I only meant that the attraction is a big factor in the group's dynamics…"

I shook my head a little to clear my thoughts, "I think I get your meaning, I just didn't think about how it would affect Siegbert."

"Yeah. It's not your fault though. Just the way things developed. All the same, I think I need to support bringing this Gaël fellow into the group, for my brother's sake."

I stood there blinking for a few moments. "Well," I eventually said, "When you put it that way I need to support Gaël joining us too. Anyone else?"

"As long as you feel you can trust him," Martina put in.

"At least we know he's a good shot," Aimée said with only a tinge of bitterness as she rubbed the spots where she was shot during that initial ambush.

"I suppose we could use another archer. And a bard would at least help with getting through social situations," Rina commented, "so I guess I have no serious objections."

"We should totally take him. Those types of people always have the best fashion sense."

"Damn it Veila I told you that he -"

"Was a bard? Yes, yes you did."

I had nothing to say to that, so I decided to go and share the good news with Gaël. I found him still in the tavern, sitting over a drink. I called out to him as I approached. "Hey Gaël."

He turned around, "Hello Good Knight, I didn't expect to see you again so soon. What's the occasion?"

I sat down across from him, "All right Gaël. I went and proposed your idea to the group. The good news is that there are no immediate objections to you joining us. However, before I officially say yes, I'd like you to meet with our party and spend some time with us so we can get a feel for your personality and character before you actually join us traveling. How does that sound to you?"

Gaël looked ecstatic, "That sounds great! When do I start?"

"Hmm… I'm not sure, however at least let me introduce you to the people who are here now."

I led Gaël over to where the women were gathered. I nodded to the two groups, "Ladies, this is Gaël. He is a bard and an archer. He travels around a lot, exaggerates stories wildly, and wants to join our little quest."

I then turned to Gaël, " Gaël, the red headed beauty in crimson robes on the far right is Martina. She's a dragoness, and a spellcaster who is good with enchantments and healing, she's also not bad at divination. The lovely raven haired girl on the left is Aimée, a ladies maid from southwest of here. She was abducted by Martina, relax it wasn't her idea, and I rescued her as well. She's great at sneaking around, hiding, opening locks, and breaking traps; although that last skill hasn't been put to the test really. She's also deft at social situations and can find information that the rest of us could not. The curvaceous blond dwarf maiden is Sieghild. She's a great warrior and good woman to have at your back in a melee. She also has a talent for leadership and planning, so if I'm gone you should listen to her. The blond elf with the nice rear is Felìcita. She's the crown princess of Albero Città and a member of their border guard. She's a good shot with her bow, and is decently talented at woodcraft and is improving all the time. The dark haired elven beauty besides her is Captain Rina of the Albero Città city guard. She's a good swordswoman, a competent archer, and is clever and quick on her feet. Finally we have the red headed lovely that is Veila. She's a clever woman, has a good set of thieving skills, and is a talented dancer. Oh, and she is convinced that you're a… 'conformed bachelor.'"

"Don’t ask. There is one more party member, but he was delayed on the way here. I'll introduce you two later."

Aimée smiled at the bard, "Well the last time we saw each other this 'succubus' didn't get a chance to talk to you much… so how about you tell us about yourself?"

Gaël looked unashamed, "Well it was just a story anyhow; and it sounded better than some girl with a knife. But as for me…" he stopped and placed his hand on his chin for a moment.

"Well the story of how I joined this band,
Started off in a far off land.
I once was a farmer's boy you see,
Until I decided that wasn't the life for me.
You see I saw this girl in my local town,
I still remember how she filled out that gown.
Yet she didn't have any eyes for me,
A country bumpkin was all she could see.
I thought about my situation and I thought about it hard,
And then I decided, I'll become a bard!
For those men were quite exotic to me,
They got all the women, and their drinks for free!
So I packed all my things and I ran away from home,
Setting out into the world to roam.
I traveled the land and I followed my muse,
But I soon found out that I couldn’t pay my dues.
My debts were rising, and my skills couldn’t carry me,
So I decided to hire on as a mercenary, see?
Soon my debts were paid and my purse was full of gold,
It wasn't long before success made me bold.
Then one day I got a letter for a job,
Some travelers to waylay and a magic item to rob.
As you may have guessed, this was the Knight,
And I didn’t expect such a fierce fight.
Your Knight was merciful and he sent me away,
So we could meet another day.
That day has come and gone now twice,
And I thought, wouldn't it be nice,
If I could work up the courage to ask,
If I could assist you on your task.
The Knight decided to introduce me to you,
And that's my tale, so how do you do?"

There was a moment of silence after that little pronouncement, then Aimée smiled and began to applaud. I joined in and it wasn’t long before the entire group was applauding. I nodded to Gaël and said, "Nicely done."

He shrugged, "It's not bad for spur of the moment."

"Well you seem to have earned your entrance at least. How much of that was true by the way?"

"All of it. Well, not all of it. Just most of it. And there were several omissions too, but you don't need to hear about my attempt to court the girl in the gown and my financial problems from a few years back and I couldn't fit them into the rhyme scheme anyways."

"Fair enough. So we were going to spend the morning doing combat drills and the evening in the hot springs."

"I think I'll pass on the hot springs, could get awkward, but I'll gladly join you for sparring."

While Gaël was indeed a fair archer, he wasn't quite as good as any of the elves. Of course part of this may have been because Veila was constantly harassing him when he was trying to aim.

"So… when did you realize you prefer men?"

"Wha? What do you mean? I don't bend that way."

"Of course you don't. You just decided that of all the heroes in the land to attach yourself to the one group that has someone like the knight in it…"

"I did! His quest is fascinating and his success in combat is worthy of song!"

"Are you sure it's not his success in his more… personal endeavors that your interested in?"

Gaël blushed at this, "I certainly wouldn’t mind learning how he does it…"

"Far enough. Would you like the Knight to show you how he does it?"

"…Yes?"

"I'm sure that if you ask him nicely enough, he'll take you away somewhere private and give you some 'hands on' instruction in his techniques…."

"No! Not that! How he…. Well attracts women!"

"Because you feel it working on you?"

"No! Because nothing has worked for me! As in I haven't had his success with women!"

"Oh! So no one's 'made a man out of you' yet?"

"What? That’s.... yeah. That’s true."

Veila put her arm around Gaël's shoulders. "Don’t worry. I’m sure hanging around with beautiful women everywhere will help with that, even if they aren't going to touch you. All else fails, we'll probably even help."

Gaël sighed, "You had to put it that way didn’t you? And why would you help anyways?"

Veila took on a look of mock offense, "What a question! We're friends now! And I want to watch my friends be happy! And when you realize that the only thing that can make you happy is the Knight making a woman out of you, I'd really like to watch that."

Gaël placed his head in his hands, "I should have seen that coming."

I felt that I should interject, "For the record, I’m not really interested in other men like that… Sorry Veila, you're welcome Gaël."

The Knights of the Realm serve many roles in the Realm. They are the King's eyes and ears, his fist and sword. They are also capable of making decisions on his behalf in circumstances. As long as the Realm isn't actively at war, and the King has no urgent missions, individual knights can pursue the goals and objectives of the Realm as best they see fit. This can be anything from enforcing the law to forming stronger bonds with other nations by assisting them with their own troubles. The Knight was last reported being engaged with the later, attempting to rescue Princess Emile. He's still doing the same thing, just now the specifics have entirely changed. In short, the King probably knows that the Knight is out questing, but is unlikely to know how his quest has changed from the original "rescue the princess."

And so it went on until I separated the two, placing Veila with Aimée and Gaël with Rina. Fortunately after that Gaël's accuracy started to show improvement and he turned out to be a fair shot after all. Unfortunately Veila spent her time trying to convince Aimée that it would be somehow fun to watch me and Gaël… well together. Fortunately Aimée mostly just laughed at that and didn't join in so I guess I can count my small blessings. I had a good duel with Sieghild and Rina again, the two are getting even better with the continued practice and I'd imagine that I am too to some degree.

I'm currently part of a quest to destroy an artifact that can dominate and control dragons. The leader of this quest is a noble Knight of the Realm. He evidently found the item being abused by a mad princess. He's a good man but... well I'll explain more when I cover the women of the group. Our group's spellslinger is a dragoness named Martina. She was the dragon that Sir Knight rescued from the princess. She has since developed some feelings for her rescuer. Another woman accompanying us is Aimée, despite having a repertoire of skills that would earn her a prized spot in the Schatten Gilde, she claims to only be a simple maid. It appears that she also has her own desires for the Knight. The next two to join this little band were me and my sister, Sieghild. I already told you about myself, but I suppose I should tell you about my sister. She's older than me by a mere candle but acts like she's years ahead of me. She's always tried to be protective of me, more so than necessary. She is a talented warrior from her time in the Hammerburg Militia. While she may have though that the Knight was attractive when she first met him, she really fell for him after he risked his life to save mine in an... incident with some elven guards. Speaking of elves, I should get on with the rest of the group. In the outskirts of Albero Città we met Princess Felìcita, who wound up following us, or more accurately following "Master Knight" after an incident that no one will tell me about and I'm not sure I want to hear anyways. Finally we recently acquired two new elf ladies, some thief named Veila that I barely know and Rina, who was actually one of our jailors during that incident with the elves. Naturally both are also infatuated with the Knight. Its somewhat disturbing actually how many women want this guy.

And here's the good bit, since evidently the Knight is too soft hearted to break a woman's heart, he decided that it would be better to make them share. And guess what? It worked, even on my sister. I kind of hate him for that, but he's been feeling guilty enough about it and has otherwise exemplified loyalty and friendship so I really can't hold it against him, I wouldn't believe it about anyone else, but this Knight might just be telling the truth.

So now we come to the reason that I started this journal. You see, when I said I was traveling with those people up there, I meant in the general sense. Because I'm completely separated from them now. We were traveling to a Druidic Grove for… well for a vacation (I know it doesn’t sound heroic, but we had just freed a city damn it). On the way a band of raiders attacked our ship and sunk it, I was able to swim to shore with the rest of the crew, but unfortunately I was trapped on the other side of the freezing river from the rest of my party. I guess I'll just talk about what happened since that moment, as the story of me floundering across a cold river is hardly interesting.

The captain of the boat, a thin human by the name of Boniface gathered the survivors of his crew together on the snowy shore. He set some men to hand out dry garb for the survivors in order to prevent freezing and soon had everyone dry and marching back towards the docks where we set out from. I exchanged a few words with my party on the other side of the river and set out after them.

After a few hours, Captain Boniface turned to me and asked, "So… what's the deal with this Knight and those women? I got this weird sense from them. Like they were all… well…"

"It's a long and complicated story. Really, just don't ask."

"All right. It's just odd, that's all I was saying."

"Tell me about it, you're not related to one of the women."

"Oh Gods, that's got to be awkward."

"Tell me about it. I even paid some money for a detection reagent to see if there was some sort of magic involved. There wasn't any of course, but that just made it weirder."

"So… how does he do it if you don't mind me asking?"

"I don't know. I asked my sister what she saw in him once. The only answer I got was that he was an attractive man who actually paid attention to their feelings about matters, treated them honestly, and did everything he could to make them happy and keep them that way. I'll admit that that's nice, but I don't see how it could make someone willing to share with someone else."

"Agreed. Some scum have all the luck."

"That's the worst bit. He's not actually scum. When my sister said those glowing things about him, she meant it. The guy is loyal to his friends. He even risked his life to save mine actually."

"Ahh. That's how this Knight won your sister I take it? Dwarves are notoriously loyal to their kin and their clans after all."

"I'll ignore the stereotyping, because that's pretty much true. And my sister is overprotective even by dwarven standards."

"Well that would do it then. Just curious, what did you mean by 'the worst bit?' I would call that a good thing really…"

"It means I can't even hate him like I normally would hate anyone who tried something like that with my sister."

"Makes sense. So how did you come to be in that merry band? Did you tag along to make sure your sister didn’t fall in with a bad person?"

"Ha ha ha. No. Actually she followed me to make sure I was safe. I had a bit of a falling out with my father and at the same time a small group of adventurers came through town. I decided that as a decent alchemist that I might as well offer my services. My father sent Sieghild later on to make sure I made it home safely. So… how did you come to be a boat captain?"

"Ironically the same way you became an adventurer, a disagreement with my father."

"Oh? How does that work out?"

"Well he was a pirate and I wanted to get out of the life, we wound up disagreeing… violently. I inherited the boat."

"I'm sorry to hear that."

"It's okay. We were never what you would call a warm family. By the way, what were you and your father fighting over?"

"Funny story. It's not quite as grave as piracy, but it is important to both of us. You see, our family has a strong brewing tradition, we've made fine dwarven ales for generation after generation. Then recently this new drink called lager was developed…"

"Hah! I love that stuff! Best drink I've had in a long time, the crisper taste really sells it!"

"I know! Unfortunately my father is too much of a traditionalist to appreciate its qualities."

"A pity. So how is the lager in Hammerburg? Where I'm from you can usually only find it in the larger and more expensive taverns…"

We then spent the next few hours happily exchanging information on the brewing trade between our respective races and we exchanged the names of brewers that we would recommend. By the time we were finished it was dark and we were setting up camp for the night. As I rested in my sleeping sack, I realized that I missed this. Not the sleep, but the camaraderie of someone with similar interests. The Knight's a fine person, even if he is going to wind up sleeping with my sister and a bunch of other women too, but trying to talk to him about brewing or how alchemical talents can produce a better yeast will just yield a blank expression on his face as he nods along. Captain Boniface on the other hand actually understood me and was actually able to contribute to the conversation by sharing some human brewing companies that made lager. It… it was a nice change.

The next morning I awoke to the sensation of claws at my eyes. I screamed an flailed around, causing the hawk perched on my face. It flew away a few feet and perched on a rock. There it held out its leg to display a message tied to it. I heard a chuckling to the side and turned to see Captain Boniface laughing, "I've been trying to wake you up for an hour. Then the hawk showed up and I figured I'd let it have a shot. You're a sound sleeper, Mr. Siegbert."

I nodded groggily and turned to look at the bird again. It flew over and landed on my knee. I carefully removed the message, unrolled it, and read. "It looks like my friends made it to the druidic grove after all, Captain. They would like to make sure that I'm alright and want me to meet them there."

"Well good on them then. Do you want to try to make your own way there or do you want to accompany us back to the docks and take another ship down?"

"I’m no woodsman. I'll take the ship any day. How long do you think it will take me to reach the grove?"

"Hmmm… hard to say. It will take about half a day to reach the docks and if we make it in time, there's an afternoon cargo barge that should be able to get you there in two days. So two days from now I'd say."

"Great. Let me just write back to them, then we'll be off."

The good Captain was as good as his word and we reached the docks about ten hours later. I asked him how we made such good time, and he said that the river wasn't nearly as direct a rout as we took, but the overland trip wasn't well suited for trade and leisurely travel. Remembering the trip it took to reach Albero Città in the first place, I couldn’t help but agree. We entered the small building that served as Albero Città's port authority on this stretch of the river and began the process of resuming my journey. I walked up to the ticket counter and began the purchase of one ticket on the overnight cargo barge. To my surprise and gratitude, Captain Boniface stopped me and paid for the ticket himself. He turned to me and shrugged, "You already paid your fair to get there, and I’m going to make sure that you do. I’m a man of my word, after all."

I expressed my gratitude to Captain Boniface and headed for the embarking docks, leaving him to start arguing with the head guard over compensation for his losses. To my surprise the barge was already in port, being loaded up with cargo. I introduced myself to the captain and he shook his head with wonder. "We don't usually take passengers, and now we get two in one trip, both dwarves at that."

>Have an update from my break.

>>28116565
Feeling a minor sense of curiosity, I went to go find this other dwarven passenger. As I entered the diminutive passenger compartment on the ship I was as surprised to see my traveling companion for this journey as she was to see me. "What in all the hells are you doing here, alchemist?" Nadja snapped at me, "Shouldn’t you be trailing behind your Knight friend?"

As we both slowly reached for our respective weapons, I responded, "I could say the same for you, shouldn’t you be following him hoping to mercilessly pick off his friends over a mistake you made in trusting Mr. Aldric?" For the sake of this journal's record I'll provide some context here, this woman had shot me earlier. Kinda caused that whole fiasco where Sir Knight gave himself up to save me. Also this crazy assassin thinks, or at least thought, we killed her boss so she's pissed at us.

"I'm busy hunting down Mr. Aldric. Which begs the question why aren't you?"

"I'm sorry, me and my friends just drove him out of the city! We were taking a break before we go running after him! Where were you that whole time? Helping him?"

She was about to respond when another voice behind me said, "Umm… is this someone I should know?"

I turned around, "Captain Boniface? What are you doing on board? I would have thought that you would be busy getting a new ship?"

He sighed and put on a disgusted scowl, "The damned guard wouldn’t authorize my reimbursement without a second witness to the damages of the ship. Fortunately this ship's captain owes me a favor and I can get him to recognize that the wreckage was caused by raiders. But anyways, who is this?"

"Captain Boniface, this is Nadja crazed assassin of the Schatten Gilde. Nadja, this is Captain Boniface, a decent guy."

I then briefly explained to Captain Boniface who Nadja was, what the Schatten Gilde was, and how we came to cross paths. The Captain nodded slowly then spread his arms wide, "In that case, I don't see why we shouldn't get along splendidly!"

"Huh? Are you mad? She's a murderous assassin!"

"True, but she's a murderous assassin who's hunting a mutual enemy. So she's very nearly a friend!"

"Well... Sir Knight did mention that she spared his life last time they met, but that's hardly a guarantee of anything with the Schatten Gilde."

Nadja rolled her eyes, "I'm still here you know? Do I have any say in this?"

Captain Boniface turned to Nadja with a smile and a small bow, "Of course you do, my morelle noire..."

"Morelle noire?"

Nadja nodded slowly, "Another name for the nightshade flower."

Boniface continued his smile, "Precisely. As deadly as it is beautiful."

Unfortunately for my newfound friend, this line only caused Nadja to laugh at him, "Seriously... You're trying that now? Never mind that, why would I have any desire to work with you?"

If Captain Boniface was upset about being rejected yet again, he didn't show it. He simply continued smiling and replied, "Because working together can only increase your chances of success. You're after the same person after all and I assume you're using very different methods. Working together would allow you to combine your information and efforts and accomplish your goal faster."

"Yes, but she shot me!" I protested.

Nadja sighed, "Get over it you overrated tinkerer. I nearly killed the Knight too and he didn't complain at all! Ha! Work with you! If anything, I should be asking him for permission to sign on!"

Captain Boniface clapped his hands, "Capital! We'll do that when we meet him tomorrow then!"

And before either of us could object, he left the room to make some last minute arrangements with the ship captain.

Nadja and I didn't speak much after his departure. She spent her time coating her knives and crossbow bolts with what she claimed was a special oil, I began mixing up a few compounds that wouldn't completely destroy the ship. Captain Boniface for his part remained above deck with the other captain, evidently an old friend of his.

It was nearing dinnertime that evening when we passed by the site of the last ambush. I was on deck trying to enjoy the stale bread I was given and trying to avoid Nadja, who for her part was trying to avoid me too. This would normally be an easy task if not for the fact that the boat was a cargo vessel and didn't have a lot of room to relax on deck.

Captain Boniface was pointing out the wreckage of his ship, "That would be what remains of my prow... that would be a piece of the stern..."

Suddenly the other captain cut him off, "Hey there's some people on the shore. Are they survivors of your ship?"

Captain Boniface frowned, "Never saw them before in my life."

I was beginning to get a bad feeling about the situation when a strange voice called out from the shore, "Ignis Globus, Augue!" An immense ball of fire was launched at the ship, exploding against the hull and wrecking the boat. As I tumbled into the water for a second time that day I couldn't help but curse my luck.

I awoke in what felt like several hours and found myself bound up in a cave. "Ah. Good morning to you, Mr. Siegbert," a familiar voice said behind me. I turned around, ignoring the faint twinge of pain and was pleasantly surprised to see Captain Boniface. Less pleasant was the discovery that he was just as helpless as I was, and that we were bound together along with Nadja, who was still unconscious.

"Ugh. What happened?"

"Once the fireball hit, we were pretty much capsized. Next thing I knew, we were being fished out of the water by some humans and dwarves. They tied us up and took us here. That's all I know."

As Boniface was finishing his summary of events, Nadja began to return to consciousness. After Boniface filled her in too, she literally growled, "Just let me get out of these ropes and..."

However she was cut off by a loud conversation between several individuals who entered the room. The first, a heavily armed and armored dwarf said in a familiar drawl, "Well I'm sorry yer lordship, but it appears that the target you're after wa'nt ther'."

"And I'm sure that the fact that you captured the one member of the band that you were after is pure coincidence."

With those words he delivered a powerful kick directly to my face, I blacked out again and when I came to, blood was pooling from my face into my lap. Captain Boniface was asking after me, concerned for my well being. Nadja was fiercely struggling against her ropes. As for myself however, somehow I didn't feel disperse or grief at all. I felt invigorated, I felt ready to act, I felt… challenged. I must remember to thank Sir Knight for his little pep talk when I see him again."

I looked around the room, fortunately Michi and his guards had left, leaving us alone. I turned to Boniface, "I'm… I'm actually okay. All right, now how are we going to get out of here? Nadja, any luck getting out of these ropes?"

She glared at me furiously, "No. They aren't rope. They're silk from a giant spider, almost unbreakable and cling to the body too much to wriggle out of."

I turned around thinking to myself, "Don't be discouraged, this is just a challenge not a failure."

Out loud I said, "Did they take our equiptment?"

Nadja rolled her eyes, "Everything of use. The only thing left are the raw components of some of your alchemical supplies, they took the acids and other useful items away with my weapons and armor."

"Hrmm… that makes things more difficult. Are we tied to anything fixed or just each other?"

Boniface looked at me, "Just each other. Do you have a plan?"

"Half of one. It will rely on luck and Michi being an idiot… so really just luck."

I looked at my two fellow prisoners, "Can you two try to stand up with me? If we all do so we might be able to get off the ground."

The two agreed and after one or two missteps, we finally were up and moving, albeit with Boniface in a rather uncomfortably painful crouch. We made our way over to the small pile where Michi and his men had tossed our discarded gear. I pawed my way through the pile with my feet, hoping against hope to find what I needed.

"Aha! We have it!"

Nadja looked unimpressed, "We have what? Soda ash and empty green glasses that Michi didn't even bother to unstopper?"

I smiled, "Yes, soda ash. And no, these are not green glasses, they are green gasses; and they are going to get us out of here!"

>could you safely pour carbonic acid over something that you're bound in?
Yes. It's present in the blood in small concentrations, as it's one of the steps in respiratory gas exchange. If your blood vessels weren't able to handle the presence of carbonic acid, humans would be an impossibility.

The next question you need to ask is this, though: What is the binding material? If it's aluminium or zinc, you're most likely fucked, as it forms a stable oxide layer that prevents reactions. The other thing to be worried about is carbonates. If the binding is made of chalk or equivalent, you're fucked.

Well sodium reacts to water by getting very hot. The chlorine gasses naturally reacts wis sodium so I guess Siegbert is either trying to make a really bright flash or he is trying to burn his way through the silk.
Is he actually crazy enough to burn his way through the ropes by spitting on the sodium while adding the chlorine gasses?
Also I made another drawing. Kinda big though.

Well we are dealing with spider webs here, and baring some sort of extreme biology (by earth standards) they are just bound in the silk of a (presumably) much larger species of spider, which still means it is made of similar proteins, and thus has whatever weaknesses those proteins have, which I don't know because google won't tell me what fucks up spider silk.

I looked around eagerly, sure enough I saw a water barrel in the corner of the room. Using an incredibly awkward squat, we picked up the glasses, the soda ash, and a few extra containers and brought them over to the small barrel. As carefully as I could, I selected a reasonable sized container, one that could be fully sealed. I then took a small amount of the soda ash and placed it in the bottom of the container. With the help of Nadja and Boniface I was able to tip the water barrel over to pour some water into the container, while most of it ended up on the ground, enough got in for my plan to work. I took a small stick from the ground and began to stir the compound vigorously. Soon it was a well mixed solution. I then carefully took four of the green vials and slowly placed them into the solution so that their tips stuck out of the lid. I then placed a lid for the container so that when pressure was applied it would snap on and break the vials inside the container. I turned to the other two, "All right, on the count of three we push down on this lid. Be careful not to breath while we do it or else we may die."

Boniface looked at me with a pale face, "What? Surely you must be joking."

"No jokes now. This could kill us as effectively as Michi could. All right, one… two… three!"

With that we held our breaths and snapped the lid down., hobbling away as fast as we could before breathing again. I waited a decent time for the gas to clear before guiding the three of us back over. "All right, now that the solution is sealed, we need to mix it. We really should be piping the gas through the liquid-soda ash mix, but hopefully this will work too… Watch out, this could get dangerous, let's get away from the container as soon as I'm done shaking it."

Once again we did our little three man hobble to and from the container's resting spot. After I had guessed a reasonably safe amount of time had passed after mixing it I turned to the other two and said, "All right, almost done. We just need to open the container, remember the same cautions as before about breathing. As in don't do it while we're near the container. All right, let's go."

One final hobble over and back and it was done. As we approached the container again, I looked into the mixture, hoping that it worked. This stuff, when properly manufactured, was supposed to be a godsend when dealing with spider webs…

I took a deep breath and said, "All right, we need to pour this n the webs. Once it gets on, gods willing, the web should start to dissolve. Once you're free, go use the water barrel to wash off the areas where this is still on your skin, you don't want this to stay on their very long. Is everyone ready?"

Will spider silk is just a protein bond and like any other cellulose based construction it dies to acid and enzymes like rock dies to paper. It's only a matter of getting the right ph value.
However spiders put acid in their webbing to prevent it from getting eaten by fungi and bacteria, so a good base should break the bonds too.
In short: any ph value under 3 or over 9 should do the trick.
Or you can burn it. Cellulose burns just fine.

I took a deep breath and said, "All right, we need to pour this on the webs. Once it gets on, gods willing, the web should start to dissolve. Once you're free, go use the water barrel to wash off the areas where this is still on your skin, you don't want this to stay on there very long. Is everyone ready?"

Two mute nods were my only answer. I took a deep breath and poured the haphazardly mixed solution onto the web bonding that held us together. It wasn't long before I felt the webs loosening. As we ripped free from the bonds, we each rushed over to the water barrel to clean ourselves off before my compound could cause any permanent skin damage.

Nadja turned to me with a little less scorn than usual, "Nice trick. I'll have to remember that mixture in the future."

"I'm not sure how helpful it would be. It requires some very specific alchemical equipment."

Boniface nodded, "Regardless, you have my gratitude at least. By any chance does your plan include an idea to get out of here?"

"No, but I'm always up for a challenge. Let's grab our gear and get out of here."

Fortune was with us, Michi and his men had only moved the rest of our gear to an adjoining cavern. He must have assumed that the webs would hold us as he evidently posted no guards in the area. We also found a great deal of extra equipment which we snagged to provide for our escape. We carefully left the cave and saw that we were somewhere on a hill or small mountain deep in the forest. Downhill from us I could see Michi's men building a large fire and an arm-and-lever style contraption, from the looks of things, it looked like it was supposed to lower a person slowly into the fire. No points for guessing who that was supposed to be. We quietly snuck off the other way, not stopping until we were fat away that site.

Once we were sufficiently far away I did my best to obscure our trail using the techniques that I saw Sir Knight teach Felìcita, I even used another scent bomb in case they had dogs.

"All right then, now all we need to do is find our way to the Druidic Grove or any other settlement before Michi finds us. Now how are we supposed to get there?"

Boniface chuckled, "That's easy. We just head northwest until we hit the river and then follow it northeast until we reach the grove."

"How did you know that?"

"Easy. We were heading Northeast up the river. When we were ambushed, we were attacked from the right and were taken back that way in a roughly straight path. As for how I know which way is northwest, I'm a sailor. I can navigate by the sun and stars."

"Oh well that's great. Now all we need to worry about is supplies. Do you remember how far they took us?"

Boniface hesitated, "It was a while. And it will be even longer to reach the grove on foot."

Nadja was rummaging through the supplies, "Looks like we at least have several days worth of food, some miscellaneous camp gear, a few books, one of which is completely blank, and our own personal gear. Hopefully they'll be enough."

I decided to swipe the blank book, I figured that I might as well record my experiences. With that we started to head northwest, towards the river. As we walked, something struck me, "Boniface, how long was I out?"

"A few hours, why?"

"Because that means that one, I'm lucky to be alive; and two, my friends won't know I'm missing for another two days."

>Probably my last post until I get off work.

And on that grim note we set off again for the riverbed and hopefully the grove afterward. However by the time we began to hear the sound of the river's water, it was early morning and the three of us were getting tired and needed some form of rest. We found an overturned tree and used some netting and gathered dirt and leaves to create a small hideaway, somewhat camouflaged from view and bunkered down for the morning/day. I closed my eyes and wondered what the others were doing this last evening. Hopefully they were having a better time than I was.

I later awoke to the sounds of voices. "Damn it, Anatole! Can’t your stupid dog find them?" I shuddered, that voice was Michi's.

A human voice answered him "Sir, with what that alchemist dropped back there, it’s a miracle that my dog made it this far."

By now the rest of our little band was awake and listening intensely. It sounded like there were dozens of them marching about out there. I could hear the dog sniffing around, it was near us no doubt, getting closer. I looked at Boniface and Nadja, sharing a look that said "Get ready to run."

All of the sudden Michi called out, "All right. Forget it. We'll have to use other methods. Pack it in men and let's get out of here!"

As the noise died down I breathed a sigh of relief then turned to my companions, "We need to get moving."

Nadja nodded, "Let's wait an hour for them to get some distance and then make a break for it. Are we heading for that druidic grove or back to the elven dock?"

Boniface shook his head, "We can't go for the dock. We're on the wrong side of the river for that."

I looked at him confused, "Couldn’t we call out to the port from the other side of the river and have them reach us?"

"Sadly no. There is a fork in the river down from here, we would need to cross over at some point, and the river is too treacherous for any but the strongest swimmers. By any chance are either of you exceptionally capable swimmers?"

Neither me nor Nadja could really say that so we gave up on reaching the elves and decided to head for the druidic grove. Nadja set out to look around discretely and after giving the all clear we all crept out and started the trek upriver towards safety.

We managed to make some good distance up the river that day and decided to make camp that evening. With the distance we gained on our pursuers, and a few strategically placed scent bombs, I was reasonably confident that we would spend the night safely. For the most part I was right, however early in the morning I was woken by Boniface who whispered in a low voice, "Stay down, they're nearby."

I looked up tentatively to see a small boat sailing up the river. It was going too slow to be traveling, and from what I could see there were many of Michi's men on board, including several who were evidently magic users of some kind. One of the wizards was looking into a crystal orb of some kind. Nadja muttered under her breath, "Oh, that can't be good."

The wizard with the crystal ball pointed towards us. "That's really not good," Nadja muttered.

A second spellcaster in red robes stood up and dramatically spread his arms wide, "Ingis Globus," he began.

Recognizing the incantation from the ambush, the three of us simultaneously made a break for cover. That may be what saved our lives, as the caster finished his spell, "Augue!" a massive fireball flew from his hands into the woods near us. Only the fact that I was behind a tree saved me from the engulfing flames, I was pretty badly burned as is. I looked up from my pain to see the forest around me burning. Nadja looked the least damaged and was already up and moving away from the river. Boniface and I were quick to follow.

However before we could get away, the caster's voice called out again, "Murus Ignis, Explicandam!"

Immediately a wall of flames emerged from the ground, cutting off our escape. The fires began to spread, forcing us back towards the boat and the spellcasters. We found a sturdy log to hide behind to plan. Nadja turned towards me, "I don't suppose that you have any alchemical magic up your sleeves to help us this time?"

"I have one Siegbert's Challenge, that might do the trick..."

"A what?"

"Err... long story short, it's an ice bomb. Unfortunately there is no way I'll get close enough to throw it... not at a target in the middle of a river."

Nadja took the vial, "You two draw their attention, I'll worry about the bomb."

With that she disappeared into the underbrush. I turned to Boniface, "Do you think she's got a plan or is she just leaving us to die while she escapes?"

Boniface nodded, "Yeah... she's got a plan. Probably."

I shook my head, "Nothing for it then, let's go get killed like we were asked."

I handed Boniface a few smoking rods to provide some cover for us and then we started running. We made it a fair distance surprisingly, keeping ahead of deadly fire spells, mundane fires, and the occasional arrow or crossbow bolt. But our luck and our run came to an end when we nearly ran into another wall of flames. I turned to Boniface, "Well this is it. It's been fun."

He turned to me, "Likewise Siegbert, likewise."

The boat with the enemy spellcasters pulled up parallel to us. The red robed mage again began to cast his spell, "Ignis-"

A sharp twang cut the wizard off, a crossbow bolt with a vial bound to it flew out and struck the wizard in the throat. He gave a gurgle and blood dripped from his mouth as he collapsed. As he hit the deck, the vial must have cracked because with a strange cloud of condensation, a thick layer of ice formed. The cloud spread out and covered the rest of the boat, the shouting and shooting stopped and when it cleared the entire boat and all its passengers were frozen in a small iceberg that had formed in the river. As they drifted off Nadja came out of the underbrush. "Not a bad mixture alchemist. Not bad at all."

"Thanks assassin, I try."

Boniface placed a hand on each of our shoulders, "Good work everyone! Think that might have earned us a day or two of respite?"

Nadja shook her head, "A day maybe, two probably not."

We then set out and kept traveling, making good time towards the grove, at the rate we were going it would be no more than a week's journey, possibly less if my friends noticed I was missing the next day and sent help.

My thoughts of potential rescue were interrupted by Boniface deciding to chat up Nadja again, "So my lady dwarf,"

"Call my Nadja, and only if you absolutely must at that."

"Well then, Nadja, how did you come to be an assassin? I must confess that I believe a girl such as yourself would have had better prospects."

"One, I'm not an assassin. Two, no I didn’t. Three, stay out of it. If I wanted to talk about it with someone, it certainly wouldn’t be one of you two."

"Oh? Can I ask why you're so reluctant to -"

Nadja whirled around with a dagger in her hands, before I could blink she had it pressed to Boniface's stomach, "Stop now, or die…" she growled at him.

We walked in silence after that.

That evening we set up a watch system to ensure that no one would ambush us again. I loaned the group my spyglass to watch the river. We agreed that if an approaching boat or group looked like they were Michi's men then we would hide, otherwise we would risk approaching them. With that settled I laid down hoping that tomorrow would bring better news.

"In that case its probably best to keep going to the grove."

With that we set out. Nadja's threat of murder kept Boniface from talking to her much, so most of the trip was spent with him and me chatting with each other while she scouted silently out front. It wasn't a particularly cheerful time, although we had survived so far, the strain of being chased and hunted was beginning to wear on us. It was odd, while traveling with the Knight, the time we spent as fugitives in the elven lands, even though it was far longer, didn't seem as painful. I figured it must have had something to do with the fact that then we were heading towards a solution to our problems, whereas here we were clearly running away. I sighed and told myself that there was nothing I could do, I was an alchemist, not a warrior like the Knight.

That evening as we set up camp, I made a decision. I started to write this journal, I figured it would be a useful way to record whatever happens next. Hopefully I won't have to stay out in the wilderness too much longer.

[The previous journal entry of the Knight resumes here]

When Sieghild's boat failed to show up the next day, I was of course concerned, however the druids assured me that the craft was most likely delayed due to a small wildfire that emerged to the southwest of here and that they would be showing up in a day or two. We all accepted this as a reasonable answer as the smoke and flames could be seen from the grove itself and we set out to continue our break. However as those two days passed and there was still no sign of Sieghild, I became concerned.

Entering my cabin I went to find Martina, "Martina, can you come with me to the hot springs and do me a favor?"

Raising her eyebrows suggestively she smiled, "Certainly I can. What is it?"

I chuckled, "Sorry, nothing quite that fun. I'm just getting a little concerned about Siegbert. Can you use another one of your scrying spells to check on him?"

"Oh fine, but you owe me one later."

"Agreed, but you have to admit that you're worried about him too."

"Yeah, a little. It's not like him to be late, but then again he's on a boat so it's not entirely his call either."

"I spoke with the elves, neither Felìcita nor Rina knew for sure but Veila was positive that these cargo ships of theirs are rarely late like this."

"All right, I'll give it a shot. Let me grab my things…"

When we reached the pool, I took a seat as Martina began to cast the spell. She looked straight ahead with a vacant expression on her face and said in a dull voice, "Look into the water to see beyond your sight…"

She then shook her head, "Ugh… I hate that. All right, let's see where Siegbert is."

We looked into the pool, I spoke first, "Well, he looks alive and well if a little sunburned, but why is he walking?"

Martina added, "And who's that with him?"

"The human looks like Captain Boniface, the ship captain that we were using, the other is… Nadja." She was clearly leading the other two somewhere. This didn't look good.

Martina looked at me, "I'll get the others."

Soon enough the eight of us were assembled. As Aimèe helped me put on my armor, I explained the situation to the others. "It appears that Nadja has somehow taken Siegbert from the ship he was supposed to take. For some reason she also has taken Captain Boniface as well. I'm planning to go intercept them and stop her. Anyone with me?"

Naturally everyone was in. I mounted Martina, she grabbed the others in her talons, and we took off, heading for the area where she had last scried Siegbert.

As we approached the site, Martina spied three figures moving along the ground, "Sir Knight, I believe we've found our dwarf."

"Good, is he okay?"

"Yes. He's talking with that Captain and the assassin is in front."

"Have they seen us?"

"Not yet. We're too high up and against the sun at that."

"Can you land on the other side of that hill from them? No sense in alerting Nadja if we don't have to."

"I think I can manage that."

Sure enough we were soon on the ground. I turned to my party members and began to direct them, "All right, Aimèe, Veila, I want you two hiding in the underbrush. I want you to ignore Nadja for now, and focus on leading Siegbert and Captain Boniface to safety. Felìcita and Gaël, I want you two to keep your distance and provide ranged support against Nadja should she make a break for it. Rina, you're with me. We're going to intercept Nadja as she approaches this way. Martina, I want you watching from the sky. Drop a few telepathy spells on us and if you see an opportunity to roast Nadja without hurting the rest of us, take it. Any objections?"

There were none, so we all broke to get into position and got ready to ambush Nadja.

It wasn’t long before Nadja came into view, she was unusually distracted for a rogue, looking out at the river for some reason. As such she was surprised when I came out from behind a tree, "Hold assassin," I said in my most intimidating voice.

"Sir Knight? You're here?" she said surprised.

"And then some," Rina added as she came from behind to flank the dwarf.

"You'll pay for what you did to my brother…" Sieghild snarled menacingly as she completed our semicircle around the assassin.

While she was distracted, I cut quickly and knocked the daggers from her hands and before she could react I had my blade raised to her throat, "I'd suggest that you'd surrender right now, Nadja."

In the distance I could see Aimèe and Veila rushing to grab Siegbert and Captain Boniface and pulling them away to safety. Suddenly Siegbert called out, "Wait! Sir Knight, she's on our side right now!"

I stopped my blade, an inch or less from her head and looked at Siegbert curiously. Sieghild, who was likewise about to kill Nadja diverted her axe into the earth. She turned on her brother and bellowed, "What? By the stones, have you gone mad brother?"

He shook his head and came closer. "We met at the docks, she's hunting after Mr. Aldric, or Isocrates or whoever, too. We were on our way here when our boat was ambushed, again. Its Michi who's behind the ambush."

I cocked my head confused, "The dwarf you drugged?"

Sieghild looked confused too, "Wait, that bastard from my - wait what do you mean drugged?"

"Nothing," Siegbert and I said simultaneously.

Sieghild looked like she was about to question that, but I cut her off by asking Siegbert, "So he's the one behind the attack on us?"

"Not quite. There's also some elf who's evidently bankrolling the job. It looks like Michi took it to get back for… for nothing whatsoever."

Cutting off Sieghild yet again I added, "Must have been one of those elven nobles from the ball. Felìcita can you think of who it might be?"

Felìcita looked embarrassed, "Um… I honestly stopped paying attention to all of them after a while. None of them were that impressive and I have to admit that I was rather bored of them…"

"That's fine. I got the same impression of them to be honest…"

I turned to Nadja, "Well… it looks like I owe you an apology. So you were helping our friend here? I suppose I owe you my thanks as well."

Nadja looked a bit rattled but still managed to defiantly state, "I suppose you do, Sir Knight. I suppose you do."

Suddenly Martina's voice was in my head. "Some men are approaching your position. Sorry I couldn't give better warning, they just came out of the woods."

Suddenly we were cut off by a loud and drawling voice, "Ahh… It's about time! I knew if I followed Siegbert long enough that I'd eventually find my target!"

I looked at the source of the voice. At the top of the hill we had landed behind, there was an armored dwarven warrior standing there. He was flanked by several lines of sellswords and sellspells alike. I turned to Siegbert, "That would be Michi I assume?"

He nodded, "That’s him."

Michi continued oblivious to our conversation, "Before you lot die, there's someone who wants to speak to the Knight."

At this an elven man stepped out from the lines of soldiers. I recognized him as being one of the assorted courtiers of Felìcita. He laughed what he probably thought was an intimidating laugh but really it sounded like he was just a bad actor. "So, now do think my name worth knowing, Sir Knight?"

I sighed, "You know what? When we met last time, you were in some ridiculous courtly getup and ranting about me dancing with Felìcita; now you're in armor and flanked by soldiers, and you know what? THE ANSWER IS STILL NO!"
>>
>>28173218
>now you're in armour and flanked by soldiers, and you know what? THE ANSWER IS STILL NO!
I believe this is an appropriate juncture for an "Oh no he didn't!" I think that last point would have had more impact though, if it wasn't shouted. Zingers are always more effective when the one giving them keeps his cool. Besides, I figure Sir Knight holds all the cards here and every one of those cards says, "I have a dragon." It's high time we got to see Martina actually at full power.

Not the most diplomatic thing I've said true, but it had the desired effect. The elf started to rant and rave about what respect he was due or what not. I used the opportunity to send a telepathically message, "Martina, I could use a ride about now…"

"On my way Sir Knight."

As the elf was finishing his rant, a red blur came out of the corner of my eyes, somehow I knew exactly where to jump and grab to catch on to Martina's harness and managed to pull myself into the saddle with an agility that surprised even myself.

"All right Martina," I telepathically messaged her, "Let's show these fools what they're facing. Lets sweep those first two lines of soldiers. I'll take the first row with my lance, you take the second with your breath."

"Understood Sir Knight."

My plan worked better than I had even dared hope, I could feel the weak armor of the sellswords collapse as my lance struck them and soon a path of carnage was cut through the men. I could hear others scream as Martina's fiery breath doomed many more.

As we pulled out of that sweep and banked to turn around I saw the wake of devastation we had cut. The two of us had almost entirely destroyed the armed formations that were about to fall upon us. One mercenary soldier, a sergeant of some kind by the looks of it, simply stared in awe and horror at us. He pointed his finger and screamed at the top of his lungs, "DRAGON KNIGHT! IT’S A DRAGON KNIGHT! RUN FOR IT!"

With that the battle was almost decided, men were deserting Michi and the elf left and right, many were screaming things about how they were not being paid enough for this or things along those lines. Michi was screaming at the men to stand and fight, but he himself was suddenly set upon by Sieghild with her armor gleaming. The two fought a battle worthy of going down in a dwarven ballad, two armored titans fighting it out with axe, armor, and shield. The two had almost identical battle techniques and several times I feared that Sieghild might be overmatched, however there was no clear shot for me to attack Michi with lance or Martina's breath. Suddenly Sieghild began to fall back, her body language indicating that she was tiring.

I leaned forward in my saddle concerned, then I saw her plan. Sieghild continued to fall back, yielding ground and elevation on the hill, but she slowly retreated towards the forest, leaving Michi with his back to the river. Suddenly she stopped falling back and raised her shield, placing all her weight behind it and rammed it into Michi. With her shield pressed against him, she began to push, slowly forcing the male dwarf towards the river. Michi tried to stop her, flailing at her with his axe, but her armor absorbed the blows, and he soon was at the edge of the hill above the river. Sieghild then pulled back and shouted loud enough for me to hear her in the sky above, "AND THIS IS FOR WHAT YOU DID AT MY OWN FATHERS TAVERN!" and rammed into him one last time. He began to tumble down the hill, rolling with increasing speed and landed in the water with a tremendous splash. I saw him flail at the surface a few times, but soon the weight of his armor pulled him down into the water and he didn't come up again.

I looked to the rest of the battle, it was going well. My party was truly routing the enemy. It was impressive to see Felìcita who had once been unable to pull a simple ambush putting down her enemies with precise shots to weak points in her armor and providing ranged support to the others in the party. Aimèe and Veila stuck to the periphery of the battle, darting in and out to harass spellcasters and disrupt their casting. Rina was fighting off their soldiers with sword and bow and surprisingly Boniface picked up a cutlass of his own and joined in with some degree of skill. Probably the most surprising contributor to the battle was Gaël, who called out to the enemy soldiers between bowshots, he was taunting them and mocking them, driving them into a frenzy to attack him personally, and often causing them to expose themselves to attack from Rina or Boniface. In addition to all of this Nadja was jumping in and out of the battle, tactically eliminating enemy soldiers who were trying to organize the survivors or rally those who were retreating. Siegbert joined in too, dropping what few of his alchemical compounds on groups of the enemy causing them to go up in flames, freeze, or get tangled in webbing or otherwise hindered. With this combined force rallied against the mercenaries, it was a short and one sided battle. Then suddenly I saw something that attracted my attention. The elf noble was slowly crawling away from the battle. I messaged Martina, "Can you drop me off down there? I have some business to finish…"

Martina caught my meaning, "I can do that. There's a few boats full of reinforcements that I'd like to introduce to dragon breath…"

As she set me down I turned to her, "Have fun with the boats. See you in a few minutes."

I headed into the woods, looking for the elf who started this all. I soon heard him struggling through the underbrush. I maneuvered around him and waited behind a tree for him to make it through. When I heard him approach again I stepped out from behind that tree and had the pleasure of seeing pure terror on his face. However any sympathy that this might have garnered him was soon lost when he drew his blade and spat at me, "Well if it isn't the mongrel human knight himself. I've learned more of you Knight, and you're even worse than I initially thought. You're only a pathetic human, you're not even nobility! You won you rank of "knight" through the Realm's ridiculous policy of honoring pathetic soldiers who happen to do well!"

I had indeed earned my position of Knight of the Realm for "exceptional heroism" during my military service, however hearing it described by this elf made my blood burn and I gripped my sword tighter. The elf was about to launch into the next piece of his tirade, but I cut him off, "If you're not prepared to use that sword elf, I'd put it down. If you surrender, I am obligated to accept. I'd do so as it’s the only way you're leaving this encounter alive."

Sorry things have been so flakey lately. Hopefully things will be more consistent soon. I'm about to call it a night, I'll be back tomorrow (God willing) with the conclusion of the Knight/elf lord encounter, Martina burninating ships, and Siegbert, Boniface, and Gaël getting to know each other.

Thanks for reading!

...Okay. I get that this elf noble's not the brightest bulb in the box, but COME ON! Does this guy have a death-wish or something?! He is mocking and taunting the man he just saw riding a dragon and doing scarcely less damage than his mount, to the entire small army of mercenaries this guy brought with him! There is a thin line between 'elven arrogance' and 'too dumb to live'.

Incidentally: FINALLY we get to see some real Dragon Knight action! This makes me far harder than it probably should, especially considering there were lewd scenes not so very long ago. I am looking forward to the final showdown between Sir Knight and Isocrates, our hero riding Martina and the lich astride a dracolich or something. Sh*t's going to be awesome.

On another note, I'd like to suggest switching up the PoV a bit more. Knights are supposed to be humble (haha), after all, so it seems he'd be less likely to brag about his exploits in battle in his journal. Other people in his party can be more descriptive of his exploits and it's an interesting way to experiment with different writing styles and flesh out their personality some, without having to clunkily work it into someone else's journal entry. Just my two cents though.

although I love the idea of spear-armed dragon knights (fuck yeah Dragonlance), I've always thought that a bow or crossbow would be better for the knight, unless the dragon fights on the ground or for extremely dangerous manouvers on flight.
>>
>>28173974
Given that he was described as having terror ob his face, it's probably just auto pilot bluster
>>
>>28175189
An inventive knight might connect a system of springs to the body of the lance, allowing him to launch the head as a single-shot harpoon.
>>
>>28175808

or use projectiles or throwing weapons and keep a lance/spear for backup
>>
>>28175808
Wouldn't it make more sense to put an actual crossbow on the lance?
This way it could be reloaded in combat and if the lance breaks it could still be used as a weapon.
>>
>>28175851

is not like a dragon would have problems carrying a bit more of wheight in the form of several weapons.
>>
>>28176084
Most logical armament would most likely be several throwing spears (around 3-5 in a realistic fantasy world), a compact/composite bow (no movement restrictions, 20-30 arrows) and a lance (for combat whilst the dragon walks).

He hesitated a moment, but refused to yield, "Foolish Knight, this time you face not some pathetic human mercenary, but an elvish lord trained in the arts of war!"

I have no idea whether or not he really believed what he was saying or not, but he attacked none the less. It was a bad attack, one born of overconfidence, stupidity, and trainers unable to correct a pupil. The kind of attack Felìcita used to make. On realizing that, I immediately felt a little bit of guilt. Without his wealth and power, this idiot was no real threat to me. I parried his blow with my shield and drove the pommel of my blade into his guts, knocking the wind out of him. As he staggered back I used by shield to bash his sword hand, breaking fingers and knocking the blade away and into a bush. He looked at me furiously, "You can't do this to me! I’m -"

"Still don’t care." I said with a sigh as I brought my pommel down on his head, knocking him unconscious. Shaking my head in exasperation at the annoyance that this idiot had caused me, I picked up his blade and grabbed his wrist and began to drag him back to the river and the rest of my party.

As I reached the river I was met by quite a sight. There were four ships worth of reinforcements sailing down the river. Two were already on fire, the crews and passengers having abandoned ship to swim for safety. The other two were intact, for now. As I watched, Martina swooped down and picked up an entire ship in her claws, lifting it into the air, I could see men jumping off as quickly as they could as she carried the craft like a bird carried its prey. She lifted it over the other ship and let it fall, crushing both boats and sinking them immediately.

Yeah. In my campaign setting that this story was originally based in, all dragon riders use ranged weapons. It just makes more sense. I was thinking about doing it here, however the Knight's terrible with ranged weaponry, and I decided it would be more effective for him to use a melee weapon and actually hit things.

As I reached the top of the hill, I could see that the battle was a complete rout for the mercenaries. I mused to myself about how the battle for Albero Città would have gone with us as experienced as we are now. Admittedly these mercenaries are nowhere near as experienced as the Golden Saber was, but I think we might have been able to stop General Zinoviy and Isocrates from escaping at the very least.

So I decided to take some time to format the Word document of the story so far, editing and cleaning it up, and so on. One of the things I've been doing is numbering the journal entries. I just realized that the journal entry with all the pastebins is number thirty. I'm using roman numerals for the entries...

Planning seems almost redundant sometimes.

Possibly. On the one hand "Dragon Knight" is possibly the most generic and logical choice for a name when you're trying to describe a Knight mounted on a dragon. On the other hand he did sound like he meant something specific.
