You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After returning to the castle and escorting the Princess to her room, you headed down to the kitchen for dinner.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

You continue to fiddle around with your bracelet for a few minutes as you talk to Nicolette and Sylvie, but then Margot shows up with her usual food cart.

"Here you go," Margot says happily as she places a plate of spaghetti in front of each of you. "You know, I'm going to miss the three of you while you're off in Marconetti..."
"I'll miss your food while I'm up there," Nicolette replies.
"Oh you..." Margot chuckles. "I'm not the one who cooks it, you know..."
"But you're the one who brings it to us every day!" sylvie says with a smile.
"Yeah, thanks for always doing this," you say.

"Just doing my job... and now I'll let you all eat," Margot says as she and her cart return to the back room.

Once Margot is ou of sight, the three of you go quickly to work at devouring your spaghetti. But by the time you're about halfway through your plate, Nicolette has already finished.

"Hm?" Sylvie says through a mouthful of food. "You were that hungry, huh."
"Not really... but I figured that I ought to get going sooner rather than later," Nicolette says as she gets up from the table. "See you two tomorrow morning, I guess."
"Tell your family I said hi," you say.

As Nicolette heads out of the kitchen, you and Sylvie resume eating your food. Before long, both of you have finished... though Sylvie was a little bit faster than you.

"I wonder if my mother cooked dinner tonight," Sylvie says with a guilty laugh. "I guess it's too late now, though... so, what are you doing for the rest of the night?"

>>28079121
Wouldn't have been my first guess, but hey.

>>28079416
I'm a little hazy on how useful Clay Spread would end up being given our Metal affinity over the typical Earth. Bombarding someone with masses of clay to cling to them and slow them down is one thing, but if it ends up being metal instead, it's more likely to be more offensive than it is a deterrent.

That said, we don't know enough theory to know whether the intended purpose of a spell is more important than the execution. It could very well be that since Clay Spread is intended to be a crowd control spell rather than strict offense, even a metallic version of the spell would find some way to have the same effect. Or even that, unlike other Earth spells that become metallic if you have a metal sub-affinity, Clay Spread will remain earthen in order to maintain its intended effect.

Same deal with the ground-to-quicksand spell that I can't remember the name of off the top of my head.

Magic is complicated.
>>
>>28079465
The thing about both Holy Shine and Tailwind though is that they were both spells with large learning curves. Clay Spread doesn't have as many issues with learning as those two do.

>>28079476
Clay Spread doesn't change.
>>
>>28079476
Clay Spread doesn't change to metal.

>back to writing
>>
>>28079485

We don't know about it yet.

The learning curve on Clay Spread might be aiming, the speed or size of the projectiles and maybe homing.

Thing is we won't know until we expend time and effort to learn the spell and i'd rather focus on something we definitely can use now instead of something that will still require time to master.
>>
>>28079517
What I'm saying is that having a steep learning curve for maneuvering and having to train to strengthen the shield were things specifically mentioned in the spell description of those spells. There was no specific indication for Clay Spread in it's spell description. We pretty much picked the two beginner spells that took the longest to use properly.
>>
We have a while still until we're at the ball. Couldn't we learn Clay Spread now and strengthen Holy Shine and improve with Clay Spread on our own time.

"Uh... you have time for another magic lesson?" you ask.
"Sure!" Sylvie says happily. "It's nice to see that you're taking an interest in magic, seeing as how Nicolette doesn't care about it at all... it's such a shame too, since she was pretty good at it back when she was taking lessons."
"Oh yeah, you were saying before that she took lessons with Marianne when they were little."
"Yeah, Aunt Ariane used to teach them. But then her grandfather got sick and she completely gave it up..." Sylvie sighs. "But let's forget that for now and get going!"

You then follow Sylvie out of the kitchen and into the hallways as you head to the library.

"Oh yeah," Sylvie says, turning to you, "did you have anything specific in mind for tonight's lesson?"

"Oh? You didn't want to learn a new spell?" Sylvie replies, sounding a bit disappointed. "Alright then..." she stops for a few seconds.
"What's wrong?" you ask.
"Nothing, I was just wondering if Mr. Gerhard would mind if we practiced with that in the library... but since it's not like we can cause a mess with it or anything, so I guess it'll be okay."
"You sure you don't want to head to the training hall instead?"
"No, I don't really like the crowds that we always end up drawing..." Sylvie says, laughing nervously.

Before you know it, the two of you have arrived at one of the castle's many libraries. As sylvie places some books on a nearby table, you look around for Gerhard... as usual, he's nowhere to be found.

"Umm, let me move this table so we have enough room," Sylvie says as she pulls the chairs from under it.
"Let me help you with that," you reply as you walk to the other side of the table.
"Don't worry, I have this..."

Sylvie then effortlesly pushes the table a few yards, clearing up enough space for you to safely cast the spell (and also to fall over in case she ends up punching through your shield again).

Honor duels are going to be the very smallest of our duties,, so practicing the magic appropriate for such isn't something to focus on, (which is why we should totally still get Vajira Spark) we should learn spells that play to our strengths and will help to protect the princess regardless of if they'd be useful in a duel.

"Yeah, I hope it's not too much trouble," you reply.
"No worries, watching the two of you is always an appreciated change of pace," he says with a bow. "As long as you don't end up breaking anything, I don't mind at all."

"Alright, all set!" Sylvie calls out.
"So, what spell are you going to be practicing today?" Gerhard asks.
"Holy Shine," you reply.
"I see," he chuckles. "Strengthening it, I take it? I wonder how well Miss Sylvie is at gauging such things..."
"She does hit pretty hard," you reply as you remember what happened when you first learned this spell.

Hoping that things will go better this time, you head over to Sylvie. Gerhard follows you, taking a safe position off to the side.

"Ready whenever you are," Sylvie says, cracking her knuckles.
"Alright, then..." you reply as you take a few deep breaths and extend your arm out in front of you.

"Light of the heavens, cast down your brilliance and deliver me from my enemies," you chant, Script forming in the air around you. "Holy Shine."

The Script then vanishes in an instant and a glowing wall of light forms in front of your hand.

"Time to test this one..." Sylvie says as she draws back her hand and lets loose.

With a soft shattering noise, your shield is breached as Sylvie's fist continues its journey towards your face.

No, but if some knob challenges her (Or, gods forbid, she challenges someone), we can operate as her proxy in the duel.

Bu that image shows the exact opposite.

and I repeat an arguement from an earlier thread, purely defending means that we have to get lucky every time, while they only need to get lucky once, and since we aren't eliminating them, they get as many chances as they want.

We need to eliminate threats as they appear while escorting the princess away from danger at the same time and protecting her from said dangers.

We need to balance offense, defense and maneuverability.
>>
>>28080353
And the best defense is a great offense.

What's your point? If we go full turtle mode, then we are basically entirely reliant on outside force arriving to help us. What if we're caught in an ambush and away from friendly support? What if the princess gets kidnapped or something? What if we need to get somewhere fast, but there's another defensive guy blocking the way?

Look, all I'm saying is that focusing on one aspect to the complete detriment of another is a very very stupid thing to do.

I am expecting bad, bad things to happen in the future. Something that'll force us out of the palace.

What's the use of all this background information on things like elementals and dragons, information about the kingdoms on the coast, and all this other fluff if we never have to see it for ourselves? Which is why I'm betting that we're going to see all this shit at some point.

Or to put it another way:
Defending the princess is NOT the same as focusing exclusively on defensive spells.
>>
>>28080440
>inb4 we get a Sealed King.
>>
>>28080420
I respectfully disagree. Our job is not to get the princess to safety, it is to keep the princess safe.

Eventually, that will involve fighting things with the intention of winning, not just holding out until help arrives/the situation passes. If we can't do that, then we're not a very good bodyguard.
>>
>>28080420
Killing/disabling everybody before they harm her makes her just as safe as running away does, and more so than just blocking.

It's not always the solution, but in many situations it's a better one than just running away.

I'd rather save offensive spells for when we actually learn to cast and hold a spell while attacking. Right now defensive spells are all we'll be reliably able to use in combat until we recieve more training from Arnaud.

If it gets to the point where we have to fuck a dude up I'm pretty sure we gotta learn how to get crazy.

Defending the princess includes defeating foes that try to harm her anyway. We have to subdue, or kill if it gets to that point, if that point comes.

I prefer playing gas canon type, so i know how good a tank can be if they can survive since all they need is one hit as well.
Plus i didn't mean to say that we only need to focus on defense i meant that our main goal is protecting the princes and trying to be a hero isn't our job.
>>28080400
True, but i'm more partial to have great defense and agility/stamina.

But then it's stopped.

"Well, that was a close one..." Gerhard says, holding Sylvie's fist in place.
"oh no I'm so sorry Reinhold I didn't mean to Mr. Gerhard did I hurt your hand" Sylvie stammers.
"No, no, I'm just fine," Gerhard says as he lets go of Sylvie's hand. "I must admit that your punching form is quite nice, Miss Sylvie."
"Umm, thank you," Sylvie replies, blushing slightly.

After Sylvie regains her composure, she turns to you.

"Umm... Reinhold?" Sylvie says.
"Yeah?" you reply.
"I think the problem is that you're not really thinking of the light in the right way... I know it's kind of hard for people who aren't horribly religious, but, um..."
"Think of it as a light that nothing can break through," Gerhard says. "As if it was a solid object... which I suppose it is, as that's the primary function of the spell."
"Ah," you say. "I'll give it a shot..."

Keeping that in mind, you try and cast the spell again.

"Hm..." Gerhard says, tapping it a few times before the spell's duration ends. "Try that again, if you would? My apologies to Miss Sylvie, but I think I'd be a bit better at gauging its specific strength than you."
"Ehehe, go on ahead," Sylvie says with an embarassed laugh.

You then cast it a third time, Gerhard watching as the shield forms. He then taps on it a few times, and then...

"Haaaaa!"

With a single punch, the shield shatters. But unlike what happened with Sylvie, his fist stops right at where the shield once was.

"Hm. Not bad," Gerhard says. "I would say that's about as strong as the average wooden door? Perhaps a bit stronger? Not quite at the spell's strongest point, but you certainly are growing close to it."
"Wow, thanks," you say.
"Yeah, I didn't know you could hit like that..." Sylvie says.
"A butler must have many skills... in any event, just keep on practicing with that and you should get there soon."

"Thanks, both of you," you say.
"Any time," Gerhard says with a bow.
"Ehehe, yeah..." Sylvie says happily.
"Well, I have a bit of business to take care of, but I trust that the two of you can handle things here without me?" Gerhrd says.
"Yeah, I'll make sure to clean up before we leave," Sylvie replies.
"Very good. Have a nice night," Gerhard says as he disappears once again.

The two of you then go back to your training, with you casting Holy Shine and Sylvie punching through it every time(but doing her best not to punch through you as well). After about twenty minutes of this, Sylvie calls it a night.

"Sorry, Reinhold..." Sylvie says apologetically. "I'd like to keep going, but I need to pack..."
"Don't worry about it, I understand," you reply.
"So, um, I guess I'll see you tomorrow morning!" she smiles.

After Sylvie moves the tables back into place, the two of you say your goodbyes.

Figuring that you ought to get your things together as well, you leave the library and head up to your room. As you pass by the Princess's room along the way, you notice that there are several maids walking to and fro... maybe she's in the middle of packing as well?

After doing one last "just to make sure" check, you enter your room and look around. You don't have many belongings... just your uniforms, sword, casual clothes and a few other things. Deciding to get that out of the way first, you take your spare uniforms out of your closet and fold them neatly before placing them on a chair.

With that out of the way, you think about what's left. Your sword obviously goes on your belt, your pocketwatch stays with you as well... remembering your drawing supplies, you go through those and take two of the three books out, along with a few pencils. Putting those in the bag you got from the store, you then place the rest of them inside your desk.

The only thing left is your books...

You decide to take all but the one that you don't actually own- Beginning Entrepreneurial Tactics. Placing them on a neat stack on your desk, you then gather your undergarments and casual clothing... that seems to be everything!

As you look at the neat stack of your belongings, you realize that you don't know what they epect you to bring everything in. While you do have the duffel bag that you brought with you the first day, you won't even be able to fit your uniforms inside by themselves.

...but then you figure that since this -is- the castle and all, Arnaud or someone else will have that covered for you.

With that out of the way, it's now time for your training to strengthen your magical reserves. Combining it with your practicing with Holy Shine, you repeatedly cast it while doing your best to make sure that it's as strong as you can make it.

After you're pretty sure that you're around 20% of your base capacity, you call it a night, getting into bed and falling fast asleep.

Tomorrow's sure to be a long day, after all...
>>
Awakened by the sunlight peeking through the cracks of your door, you get up and stretch your arms as much as you're able, then throw on something that's relatively clean. After making sure that you're presentable, you head out to the front desk.

Yesterday was actually a good day... aside from all the murder. To be honest, you're kind of surprised that seeing a bunch of guys getting killed didn't shake you up more. Citrine was pretty messed up for a while, but you bounced back pretty quickly... maybe there's something wrong with you?

But even ignoring the possible issues with your mental state, you're still kind of worried. VOLKER wants to adopt you? And Citrine? Well, you can actually undertand why he'd want to adopt her since she's super nice... but you're just some filthy kid from a terrible place and raised in a whorehouse and you don't deserve to be taken in by such an amazing person.

Even though you'd LOVE to learn how to sword people like that some day.

With a sigh, you take your position at the front desk... it's still early, and people don't generally show up to "do business" until at least noon. But despite this, the Boss was never one to pass up an opportunity to make money and so here you are.

...and here HE is, to make sure that you're earning your keep.

"Hey, Reinhold," the Boss says, approaching you.
"Good morning, Boss," you say as respectfully as you can manage.
"Yeah, it -is- a good morning," he replies with a wide grin on his face.

WHY IS HE SMILING.

>[1/?]

Aw shit.
>>
>>28081302

"Umm..." you say, trying to figure out how exactly to ask him what he means without getting punched.
"My boy, today is a fuckin' GREAT day indeed... for me -and- for you. Now get lost," the Boss replies, motioning to the door.
"You're giving me the day off?" you ask, stunned.
"Yup! Our best customer's decided to buy out the place for the REST OF THE FUCKING WEEK, so you don't have to bother yourself with working until tonight's cleanup duty!" he says happily. "Now get out before I change my mind."
"Y- yes sir! Thanks, Boss!" you say as you scramble out of your seat and head for the door.

Just as you make it to the door, you hear a familiar voice calling for you.

"Hey Reinhold, wait up!" Citrine shouts as she runs down the stairs and towards you.
"Citrine? What're you doing here?" you ask.
"I happen to be too young for the tastes of our best customer, so the Boss is giving me the day off too!" she says, smiling. "So I figured that we'd spend our day off together!"
"Uh... sure," you say with a confused smile. "That'd be great."

With that, Citrine takes your hand and the two of you hurry out the door.

"Not so fast," a gruff male voice says.

Before you even know what's going on, you see an arm shoot out towards Citrine and grab her by her free wrist.

"Kyaa!" Citrine screams. "L- Let me..."
"Haha, I fucking love doing stuff like that!" Adrien laughs as he releases Citrine's wrist.
"Mr. Adrien?" you say, stunned.
"How's it going, little guy?" Adrien says, tussling your hair.
"Umm, what are you doing here?" you ask.

"Well... unlike our boss, me and my buddy here aren't into whores," Adrien says, pointing to Volker, who is standing behind him. "And seeing as how he up and decided to enjoy himself to the fullest before our little journey, the two of us are going to be pretty bored for the next few days," he sighs.
"I was hoping for a dramatic exit scene where the two of you see us off at the docks, but nothing ever works out as well as you hope..." Volker says, sighing.
"So you mean..." you say, a smile slowly forming on your face.
"Yup, we're going to be bugging you two until our boss finally gets his fill," Adrien says.

Oh man OH MAN! These two are awesome, and now you actually get to hang out with them for the rest of the week!

"So, uh..." Volker begins, "...is there anywhere in this town worth checking out?"
"Not really..." Citrine says, sighing. "But I guess the view of the river out by the docks is pretty nice?"
"Guess that's where we're going, then..." Adrien says.

With that out of the way, Citrine leads the three of you to the docks. By this time of the day, most of the boats have headed out into the river so it's less crowded than usual.

Fortunately.

>[3/?]

Hey, Archelon, might as well ask, since I don't think you ever precised it.

>>
>>28081344

"Wow, this is pretty different from the view back home..." Adrien says. "Never bothered to actually check out the scenery before."
"It's pretty much the only good thing about this place," you reply.
"Heh, you might be right..." Adrien laughs as he takes in the view. "It'd be a pretty good backdrop for a fight, don't you think?"
"What, like in those plays you're obsessed with?" Volker replies. "Yeah, the atmosphere by the river is pretty nice... you wanna take advantage of it and show off for a bit?"

Adrien turns to Volker, staring at him as if he'd gone mad.

"Hell no!" Adrien shouts. "Unlike you, I actually take care of my shit and I'm not about to let you fuck up my sword just because you wanted to play around."
"C'mon, I'm not that bad..." Volker sighs. "I didn't mean any kind of serious thing, just a show for the kids."
"God damn it..." Adrien grumbles under his breath. "Alright, I'll give in this time. But if you break my fucking sword, I'm gonna break your arms."
"Yeah, yeah..." Volker says as he unsheaths his swords and twirls them around. "Just a simple back-and-forth, like we did to impress that nobleman that one time. I want to show my future son and daughter just how awesome my skills with the sword really are!"

"Whatever, man..." Adrien says as she cracks his knuckles and unsheathes the massive bastard sword that he had strapped to his back. "You don't break my fucking sword, I don't magic you into the ground."
"Fair enough," Volker replies as he takes a stance.

On that note, how old are we? I think she showed up when we were 7 and the last flashback said she's been here a year? So 8?

Citrine's seven years older than Reinhold.
Fifteen during this flashback, and twenty-four in the present timeline.

So far we only acomplished making holy shrine stronger. But, from what I understand that isn't what we were trying to do. The people who voted for "work on holy shrine" wanted to reduce cast times.

W know that reducing cast times is possible and we know that it is difficult. But we don't know what kind of time frame to expect. If name only cast is a week away (with enough practice) that is one thing. But if it's a few months or even years away that is a whole different matter.
>>
>>28081388
People just started talking about casting times all of a sudden. I wanted it to be better than a piece of plywood.

Volker then leaps into action, forcing Adried back with a flurry of sword swings. Just as it looks like Adrien won't be able to counter at all, he dodges to the side faster than it seems like he should even be able to considering the size of his sword, and then swings at Volker with the flat of his blade.

The tide of the mock battle seemingly having turned, Adrien goes on the offensive. Volker is barely able to dodge his sword swings, and Adrien easily evades Volker's attempts to counter.

"Wow..." Citrine says in awe. "I didn't think that Mr. Adrien was so fast."
"Yeah," you reply, your mouth agape. "I wanna be that fast some day."

Just as it looks like Adrien's about to smack Volker in the face with the flat of his sword, Volker catches it with both of his, holding them as if they were a pair of scissors.

"You better fucking not," Adrien says through gritted teeth.
"I better not -what-?" volker replies, a wild grin on his face.
"I swear... if you break my fucking sword, you're gonna spend the rest of the week inside a boulder."
"Ehehehehehe..."

As he holds Adrien's sword in place, he looks around... their little show seems to have drawn quite the crowd.

"That's enough," Volker says as he releases Adrien's sword and jumps back, sheathing his own swords. "Don't want to draw too much attention, after all."
"You have a point," Adrien says as he returns his own sword to its resting place on his back.

We should get it up to max power before we worry about the casting time.
>>
Can we just cast that shield spell multiple times at once? Like have 1 directly behind the first one to boost strength.
>>
>>28081401

Disappointed at the fight's abrupt end, the crowd quickly disperses, leaving only the four of you.

"So what now?" Adrien asks.
"Yeah... is there anywhere else here where we can waste time?"
"Umm..." you begin, "I always go to the alley by the brothel when I don't have to work. Nobody else ever goes there ever since the Boss announced to the entire village that he'd kill anyone who messed with his property."
"Meh, sounds good to me," Adrien says, shrugging.
"Lead the way, little guy!" Volker laughs.

Doing as you're told, you guide your little group to the close-off alley at the side of the brothel. OVer the years, it's kind of become your personal hideout. Either entrance is mostly blocked off by several large crates that you and Citrine dragged in, and there are a few smaller ones scattered about that you can sit on.

"Umm... here it is," you say nervously. "I know it's not much, but nobody should bother us here at least."
"Every man needs a place to get away from it all..." Adrien mumbles as he looks around. "I'm surprised how clean it is here."
"Me and Citrine are the only ones who ever come back here, so it's not that hard to keep tidy."
"Nice job, kid," Adrien says, patting you on the head. "So what now?"

"I could go and fetch some drinks if you'd like," Citrine says.
"Nah, that's fine..." Volker says. "Actually, I just got an idea..."
"Hm?"
"How'd you like to get some advance lessons on how to be an awesome swordsman like me," he says as he picks up a wooden pole from off the ground.
"Here we go..." Adrien says, sighing.
"I'll try and teach you the basics over the next few days. After we finally head out, you can go on and practice in your free time... I'll be looking forward to seeing your progress when I get back."

He then turns to Citrine.

"And also to hear your response," Volker says, smiling.

Yeah, time to get on top of things. You need to find something to put your luggage in, and then you need to figure out just when exactly it is that you'll be leaving. With that out of the way, you head out into the hallway to find someone who would be able to help.

"Eh? I- I mean, you don't have to..." Melanie stammers. "I mean, if you insist... Um, follow me."

Melanie then leads you down the stairs and into a storage room, where she then rummages through until she finds a large suitcase.

"Do you think this will be large enough?" Melanie asks.
"Umm..." you open it, checking to see how much it can hold. "Think so."
"Okay, then I'll just grab this..." she says with a grunt as she picks it up.

"I'm a maid so it's my job to handle such things, you don't have to..." Melanie says.
"Don't worry about it."

She then leads you out of the room, and you follow her up the stairs.

"Hey, I was wondering about the seating arrangement in the carriage," you say.
"Hm? What about it?" Melanie repies.
"I know that Sir Gregory is going to be riding with the King, and I'll be with Marianne... but what about the others?"

"Yes... I was asked if I wanted to come along, and since I've never actually been to Marconetti before..." Melanie replies, smiling.
"Heh, Marianne must be happy about that."
"Yes, she was quite pleased. Anyways, His Majesty's carriage is larger than the one that the Princess will be riding in and one more person will be able to comfortably ride in that one, so I think that Miss Sylvie will be riding in one carriage and I'll be in the other."

"Huh. And the final decision is up to me?" you ask.

Might as well be early...

You head downstairs to the dining hall, standing by the entrance like always. Looking at your watch, it'll most likely be a little under an hour before the Princess comes down...

...with nothing else to do until then, you decide to bring out your sketchbook so you can at least get some drwing time in.

Crap, you left your new sketchbooks with your other stuff upstairs. With that option gone, you just decide to let your mind wander until the Princess comes down.

And an hour later, you hear a few footsteps approaching. Looking to see where they're coming from, you see Princess Marianne and Melanie. Her usual crowd of maids isn't around, probably because there isn't much planning to do today aside from what's already been done.

"Good morning," the Princess says to you. "Melanie tells me that you were up early today... I take it you're excited for our little trip?"

>>28082702

Considering my job, I actually hope for a dull, boring day.
>>
>>28082702
What? No jab? How am I supposed to snark to this?

"I don't know about excited. Never really been to a Ball before and most of what I've heard about the people there..."

Or you could go with the first part, I guess.
>>
>>28082731
That implies that the Princess is boring.
>>
>>28082702
I'm just hoping for a dull, uneventful day.
>>
>>28082702
"I am always up early."
>>
>>28082741

Ok, let me rephrase that:

Since our job is keeping princess safe, we hope "excitement" is kept to minimum.
>>
>>28082702

"In all my excitement I forgot to keep a sketchbook on my person, so here I am."

"Just making sure that I'm on top of things," you say. "I haven't had to guard you before outside of Granache so I'm kind of on edge."
"Yes, well I doubt you'll have to escort me around for most of the trip..." the Princess says, sighing. "Anyways, let's hurry up and eat."

With that, the Princess heads into the dining room, You and Melanie follow behind her, and you take your usual seat besides her.

"With any luck, the ride there will be uneventful," Marianne says, turning to you.
"I certainly hope so," you reply.
"Melanie helped you pack, so I suppose things are all set on your end."
"Yes, and your bag is being brought to the carriage as we speak, Mr. Reinhold!" Melanie says with a bow.
"Thanks," you reply.

"If you want, I could get something for you to read along the way..." Marianne says.

I'd like to learn more about the old kings and we've got 3-4 days before the ball to read our stuff after the trip.

Speaking of which. When are we going to get the rest of the other book from her we read?
>>
>>28082895
Let's take [Board game]
Shirley they have a chess set laying around.

Although that is assuming that the carriages ride smoothly.

Whenever we ask. We wanted to finish the other stuff first.

Yeah, I was actually meaning to write it up tonight but the flashback kind of got in the way of that.
>>
>>28082933
Wouldn't that imply a duel between our social betters?
>>
>>28082938
Considering Monique's family gained nobility by winning a duel I think that's allowed.
>>
>>28082895
"I brought some of my own and I'm not even sure I'll get much time to read.

But thank you for the thought.

...unless there's something you think I might benefit from reading in advance of our arrival?"
>>

I'm referring to the fact that WE are not aristocracy, so it would not be us dueling but our superiors. No comments on whether it'll actually happening.

"Cool, what did you have in mind?" you ask.
"There were several more from the same series as the first book I lent you..." Marianne replies. "Melanie?"
"Yes, Princess?" Melanie replies.
"From my main bookshelf, would you mind getting 'The Steel Dragon' for me?"
"Certainly!"

Just as Melanie hurries away, several butlers arrive with the day's breakfast. After placing a plate holding two large waffles in front of you, they bow and then leave the dining hall.

Given how she's indicated she loves reading, and is a princess, her room probably looks like a library.

"'Steel Dragon.' huh. Is he still around, or did he get turned into a sword?" you ask.
"Oh, he's still around. He was never one to stay in one place for very long, so he wasn't able to be targeted like the other Old Kings were."
"So he was one of the lucky ones."
"I would say more, but you said before that you didn't like spoilers."
"Heh, thanks for the consideration."

The two of you then begin eating. Though your waffles are fluffy and delicious, they're no match for your fearsome appetite. The Princess finishes her food shortly after you do, and the two of you then head for the gate.

"It looks like this is it," Marianne says as the two of you walk. "We won't be seeing Granache again for at least a week."

[x] Mention how you've grown attached to your new home at Castle Badass.
I wonder how the contrast with Marconetti's nobility going to look like.

Speaking of which, are there more nobles at Granache's castle? We've been only interacting with the few hyperpowered NPC's. Are there more 'civilian' ones?

>Speaking of which, are there more nobles at Granache's castle? We've been only interacting with the few hyperpowered NPC's. Are there more 'civilian' ones?
There are others, though they tend to keep to their own mansions like Monique's family does.
There are also other knights, though all the important folks who usually loiter around the castle have already been shown.

And now I shall call it a night, as I don't think I'll be able to stay up long enough to do another story post.
Next thread will be tomorrow night, I'll try and start earlier than usual.

Tonight's thread was fun, and thanks for playing!
If someone could archive this one for me, I'd appreciate it. I'm liable to pass out in the middle of it.
>>
>>28083213
Daww. This.

And if you have any funny ideas like us returning to only see ruins of the castle, I'm going to track you down and prostrate myself before your sith level of viciousness and sadism
>>
>>28083306
Yeah, we have to have someone for Reinhold to fight before he reaches army-killing level.
>>

>>
>>28083306
>>28083224
I know how these sort of things go. The nobility will remain completely inconsequential until such time as the route we're on calls for douchebag noble antagonists with a lot of power who up until then we never even noticed.
>>

I hope we get to talk with the King a bit during this trip. Thierri seems like a total bro but we barely ever get to interact with him.

Maybe he prefers the company of fishes.

I am now picturing Marianne as Ariel for no reason.

Question: Did we ever check the arrangements regarding our getup for the ball?
>>
>>28083840
It'll be more fun if we leave it unknown until we need to dress up for it.
>>
>>28083840
Not really, but Arnaud is in charge of that and he knows his shit. He'll inform us as it becomes relevant.
>>
Considering seating arrangements, see if we can sit on top of the carriage with the driver, while we let the girls have their fun together. Not good to leave either Sylvie or Melanie out.
>>
>>28084220
>In b4 hormonal teenage girls screaming "WHY ARE YOU AVOIDING ME!?"
>>
>>28084220
That would be incredibly uncomfortable. It gets windy up there, you know. Hard to read.
>>
>>28083938
I'm just picturing Arnaud watching the carriages leave with our getup in hand.

"Oh dear..."
"...I'm sure he'll be fine."
>>
>>28084679
IF it's Arnaud, he could probably just fly after us.

Not that i'd think that someone on his level would be in that situation.
>>
>>28084699
Someone as powerful as Arnaud flying into a country unannounced, no matter the situation, is probably a diplomatic incident.

These people are so strong that country strength is measured by how many of them are around.
>>
>>28084679
>>28084699
He'd just be standing there waiting for us when we arrived.

"I believe you forgot this."
>>
>>28084699
Well, I'm pretty sure Arnaud was the one taking care of things for the ball. I checked the archive though, and when we asked about he said it'd be ready, but not if we needed to pick it up or what. At least, not that I could find.
>>
>>28084785
I meant in the situation of not having everything ready to go and in perfect order long before we go.
