You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After having breakfst with the Princess, the two of you are now headed to the front gate.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Fuck yeah, Princess Quest!
>>
>"It looks like this is it," Marianne says as the two of you walk. "We won't be seeing Granache again for at least a week."

"We might not be gone for too long, but I think I'll actually miss this place," you say, turning to the Princess. "It's really starting to feel like home."
"Oh?" she looks at you with an expression of surprise. "...well, you have been here for nearly a month... "
"Seems like a lot longer, though."
"Yes, well I suggest that you take it all in while you still can..." she says as the two of you finally make it to the gate.

youre met with a very large carriage, pulled by a blue behemoth... that one must be the King's. And next to it is the same carriage that you and the Princess ride in while going into town.

You see several butlers loading luggage into both carriages, and Sir Gregory talking with one of the drivers. While the King has yet to show, both Sylvie and Sir Vincent are waiting patiently off to the side.

"Oh, Reinhold! Marianne! Good morning!" Sylvie shouts as she runs towards the two of you, her father following behind her.
"Good morning, Sylvie," the Princess says. "Sir Vincent, I take it that you're seeing us off?"
"Yup!" Sir Vincent says, laughing heartily. "Since I have no idea when I'll be able to see my favorite daughter again, I'm going to stick around until you guys all leave!"

"Daddy, you shouldn't say that..." Sylvie mumbles, her face flushed. "That's not really fair..."
"What, you sisters always rub it in my face that they favor your mother, so of course you'd be my favorite!"
"so embarassing..."

After giving another hearty laugh, Sir Vincent turns to you.

>"Don't worry, Sir Vincent. I'll be perfectly safe as long as Sylvie's around."
don't mention fist. Not because it's a meme, because from a writing standpoint the sentence flows better/feels more natural without it.
>>
>>28096884
That reminds me, I think it's best that Sylvie rides in the carriage with us. Sir Gregory is more than capable of defending the king on his own, and having a high-powered magic user in the carriage with us could prove much more useful in case of attack.

Who would be stupid enough to attack is anyone's guess, but if they'd try it, they would most assuredly be well prepared.
>>
>>28096932
I honestly don't think that's a big deal since an attack on our carriage would be an attack on both carriages.
>>
>>28096932
It's not a problem of defending the king, it's that being in a carriage with sir greg all day is going to drive Nico up the wall.

Sylvie's there to keep her sane and from doing anything dumb out if sheer frustration.

>>28096945
Positioning is key. If you're going to rob a caravan, you're going to make sure the individual coaches are isolated as best as possible to ensure that their defenses are scattered and to increase confusion.

Ensuring an equal (HA!) distribution of power between both carriages ensures maximum safety.
>>
>>28096911

This; I agree.
>>
Best solution to the seating problem is shoving the entire thing on Nico. She's the one who will suffer most, it's only fair.
>>
>>28097000
If that was the case then Gregory or the King would be riding with us instead of together as they're the most powerful fuckers here. This isn't about guarding, this is just "pick who would be comfortable ride with" and since Marianne is happy that Melanie is coming and Sylvie is Nico's best friend that's how it should be.
>>
>>28096945
The plan is tactically sound. We might not be in too much danger but, there is no excuse to slack off.
>>

"Don't worry, Sir Vincent," you say with a salute. "I'll be perfectly safe as long as Sylvie's around. After all, she can cast Fist."

Hearing your joke, Sylvie tries desperately to hide her blushing face with her hands. And Sir Vincent, on the other hand...

"HAHAHAHHAHA!" Sir Vincent laughs, sounding like booming thunder. "That's right, she is my baby girl after all!"
"Why did you have to say that..." Sylvie mumbles, completely embarassed.
"You heard him, Sylvie!" he says, tussling her hair. "Take good care of Reinhold and Marianne while you're out in Marconetti!"
"Yeah, yeah..." she sighs.

"Oh yeah, before I forget," Sir Vincent says, snapping his fingers. "Remember what I told you, Sylvie. If those nobles in Marconetti get grabby..."
"I know, -don't- punch them. Just shock them a bit." Sylvie replies, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah... though those assholes like to pretend like they're tough shit, they turn into a bunch of pussies when you actually confront them. That's why you need to keep it discrete."

"...grabby?" you say, sounding a bit concerned.
"Yeah, there've been... -issues- in the past with certain members of their noble class touching people in places that they really shouldn't. I almost caused an incident when I wrecked a guy for harassing Sylvie's mother, so I figured that you guys ought to have a heads-up," Sir Vincent says, sighing.
"Yeah, I'll keep that in mind."
"I certainly hope you do," the Princess chimes in.

"Well, I need to talk to Gregory about a thing, so I'll leave you kids alone for a while... see you in a bit," Sir Vincent says as he heads towards the carriages.

And just as he leaves, you spot Nicolette and Melanie coming in.

"Hey, guys..." Nicolette says, waving as she approaches you. "Looks like we're just waiting for Thierri?"
"Yes, he's the only one who isn't here yet," Marianne replies.
"Just like always..." she sighs. "I hope you guys are more excited about this trip than I am."

"If you say so..."
"And worse comes to worse, we tell them that Sylvie is Vincent's daughter and laugh when they all piss themselves in fear."

"C'mon, Nicolette..." Sylvie grumbles.
"But yeah, we shouldn't have to worry too much about grabby hands," Nicolette says, shrugging. "Just rumors and shit."
"Yes, you were talking about that..." Melanie says nervously.
"You shouldn't have to worry since nobody there will even know who you are," Nicolette smiles, giving Melanie a thumbs-up. "We're the ones who'll get most of the bullshit."
"And Luciana will be with us for a good part of the ball, and she's rather skilled at dealing with them," Marianne says with a smirk.
"Yeah, she's fucking scary when she gets mad. Kind of like my old man."

"So, what are we going to be doing about the seating arrangement?" Sylvie asks.
"Reinhold and Marianne are in one carriage, and my old man's dragging me along with him in Thierri's..." Nicolette says, exasperated. "Dunno where you and Melanie will be going."
"Actually, the Princess said that she was going to leave the final decision for that up to Mr. Reinhold," Melanie chimes in.

"Uh... I guess you can come with us then, Melanie?" you say. "You and Marianne are pretty close, and Sylvie and Nicolette are best friends, so..."
"How thoughtful of you," Marianne says.
"Looks like you get a first-hand seat to bitchfest..." Nicolette gives a resigned laugh as she wraps an arm around Sylvie's shoulders.
"Hm? I don't know about that..." Sylvie replies.
"What, you're gonna try and sit with the driver or something?"
"No, I was just thinking that I could take the opportunity to talk about old times with Sir Gregory... maybe hear some stories that I hadn't before...'

Realizing what she's just gotten herself into, Nicolette begins cursing under her breath.

"Could you please give it a rest... I haven't teased you at all today, so I'd appreciate it if you could return the sentiment...." Nicolette says with an exasperated sigh.
"But the only time Sir Gregory ever really smiles is when he's talking about you..." Sylvie says with a sly grin.

"Seriously, I don't want to have to spend hours in a small space listening to my old man bringing up the most embarassing shit ever while Thierri laughs his ass off any more than you'd appreciate waking up to the realization that you'd passed out on Reinhold's shoulder while riding in the carriage and drooled all over the place like you usually do when you fall asleep," Nicolette says wih a cold glare.
"O- okay, sorry..." Sylvie replies nervously. "I won't bring anything up..."

Looks like they're both on the attack nowadays...

"I'll probably join my father whenever he decides to have that little talk with King Celestino about that spying incident..." Marianne says. "...I'd like to spend the rest of the time with Luciana in town, but I don't know how possible that will be."

"Umm... I was just going to enjoy the sights," Sylvie says. "It's been forever since I've been to Marconetti, so I'd like to see how things hae changed..."
"I'm just going to end up following Sylvie around, I guess," Nicolette says, shrugging.

"And what about you, Melanie?" Marianne asks. "You're not going to be on-duty, so you're free to do whatever it is that you wanted."
"Eh? I- I suppose I'll go shopping..." Melanie replies, fidgeting. "I hadn't put much thought into it, to be honest."

"I'm glad that my jokes contribute to that, even if they are awful," you say with a bow.
"At least you're aware that you've been slipping lately," Marianne replies with a sigh.
"I'm glad to see that my decision to pick you was a good one..." the King says, patting you on the shoulder. "Marianne's a lonely girl, and she could always use some more friends."
"F- father!" Marianne shouts, clearly embarassed.
"Well, I suppose we ought to get going... no sense in wasting daylight, after all."

As that's as good a sign that it's time to leave as any, you split into your separate groups and head to your respective carriages.

"Here's your bag, Mr. Reinhold," Melanie says as she hands it to you. "I've also placed the book that the Princess asked me to get for you inside.
"Thanks," you say as you take the bag.

You then enter the carriage, helping the two girls inside after you. The Princess takes one side of the carriage to herself, with a box of pastries and a stack of books next to her. Melanie takes a seat next to you, taking care to make sure you have enough room to sit comfortably.

"Next stop, Marconetti..." Marianne says with a sigh.

You can hear Sir Vincent crying loudly about how much he'll miss Sylvie, and the King laughing at him... after a few minutes, you see him finally leave and so the carriage finally gets started.

Having been separated from his brother for the first time in his aeons of life, Alsiradna slowly lost his drive to remain among the humans. Anrasorana was the one who found them so fascinating, but Alsiradna was merely pulled along... with no such anchor keeping him around, he eventually shifted from being a common fixture of the area to the mere shadow of a legend, only interacting with the humans in order to administer justice and protect them from outside threats.

Over time, the incidents which required Alsiradna to show himself decreased greatly, and the humans under his protection eventually forgot about him aside from the legends of his exploits.

Unfortunately, those under his care weren't the only ones who forgot about Alsiradna. Emboldened by the lack of opposition, a group of bandits attacked one of the cities within Alsiradna's territory. They slaughtered hundreds in their raid, and Alsiradna was met with the scene of a massacre when he finally arrived on the scene.

Enraged that anyone would dare to do such a thing, he assumed his true form for the first time in centuries and incinerated the entire bandit gang in a flash. Once again reminded that Alsiradna was still among them and protecting them as he always had been, the humans rebuilt with renewed vigor, eventually forming two kingdoms within his territory.

Though he mostly left them to their own devices, Alsiradna personally enforced peace between the two kingdoms, refusing to tolerate any civil wars. Aside from that, he also protected them from outside invaders just like he always had.

>[1/3]
>>
>>28099442

After a few hundred years had passed and the area had become more or less stable, Anrasorana finally returned to his homeland. Shocked at just how much things had progressed in his absence, he assumed his true form and took to the skies so that he could survey the land.

Noticing a flame in the night skies, Alsiradna flew up to see what was causing the disturbance and was met with his brother. Finally reunited with his brother after over a thousand years, Alsiradna was the happiest that he'd ever been.

After they returned to the ground and returned to their human forms, Alsiradna noticed that his brother was wearing strange robes, the likes of which he'd never seen before. Laughing, Anrasorana explained that he'd spent the centuries after his departure exploring the continent and taking in all the sights.

In particular, he took a special interest in the eastern area of the continent and the culture of its inhabitants, even going so far as to open his own school of swordsmanship in that area. Having openly lived with the humans for all this time, Anrasorana had become known as the strongest fire elemental spirit in the entire world.

Impressed by how much the humans in the area had progressed while he was gone, Anrasorana congratulated his brother's efforts. Excited to see his brother again, Alsiradna asked him if he was returning for good... but unfortunately, Anrasorana was only visiting.

A few weeks into Anrasorana's visit, word came in of an attack along the border. Wasting no time, the brothers rushed in to defen their people... and were met with an entire mercenary army. Laughing at the enemy force, Anrasorana told his brother to stand back while he handled things. Unsheathing his exotic eastern sword, he rushed in and utterly destroyed the entire force without even needing to change to his true form.

After they had finished helping out the survivors, Anrasorana wished his brother the best of luck and left once more, promising to keep in touch this time.

Alone once more, Alsiradna wandered from city to city. As his human body had become recognized after so long, he decided to advance his form in physical age to that of a young adult of about twenty. Finally free of the constant attention of the humans, Alsiradna travelled in peace.

After several years, he stumbled across the ending stges of a bandit raid. All the humans of the small border village had been killed, and the buildings had been destroyed. Enraged by this scene of senseless carnage, Alsiradna assumed his true form and incinerated the bandits without mercy.

Having constantly been exposed to how terrible humans could be, Alsiradna had started to grow tired of their senseless violence. He had never found the humans particularly interesting like his brother had, instead spending most of his time making sure that they were treating each other well and defending them from other humans.

As he mulled over this while wandering in the ruined village, Alsiradna heard the faint cries of a human baby. After finding and ensuring that this child was safe, he looked around for any other survivors... but there were no other humans around for miles. With nobody else to take care of the baby, Alsiradna had no choice but to care for it himself.

Just how powerful are those spirits, anyway? They sound like demigods who merely allow human kingdoms to exist at all.
>>
>>28099590
Alsiradna and Anrasorana were pretty much how you described, mostly because of how old they were. Others range in power from the equal of those two to that of a young dragon.

The one thing they all have in common is that they are EXTREMELY hard to actually kill.

There's also a general tendency to try and utterly destroy anyone who goes up against them, which is contrary to the dragons' natual instinct to simply crush enemies underfoot enough so that they will know their place.

As the carriage rolls along, you rummage through your bag until you find the book that Marianne had Melanie get for you. Bringing it out, you place the bag back on the seat. Looking around the carriage, you see that the Princess is starting into her box of pastries while Melanie turns from one window to the other, a giddy smile on her face.

"You're really excited about this trip, huh," you ask, turning towards Melanie.
"Eh? I tried my best to keep calm before we left, but, um... yes!" Melanie says, giggling. "I'm so very excited to actually get to go to a foreign country, and with members of the royal family, no less!"
"Well, I hope that your expectations are met," Marianne replies, amused by Melanie's excitment.

As the two girls return to looking at the scenery, you pick up your book and start reading.

Born deep in a mountain range, there was once a young spirit of metal. Desiring nothing more than to pull free of the planet's hold on him, he eventually dug his way to the surface and saw the sky for the first time.

For countless centuries, he enjoyed the sounds of the world around him as he simply looked upwards, admiring the sun and the moon and the planet's ring and all the stars in the sky. And in this simple life, he was content.

And one night, something new crossed his path.

It was the form of a thousand-year-old dragon as it finally answered the call of its ancestors and rose to the heavens. As he bore witness to what is said to be the most beautiful sight in all of creation, the metal spirit's very soul was moved.

Finally moving again for the first time since he'd broken free from the mountain that birthed him, he sprouted legs and directed them to take him in the direction from which the dragon had risen from.

As the spirit walked, his gaze moved away from the sky for the first time... the sights of the world around him were all new, though he was already centuries old by this point. Taking in each and every new sight and sound, the metal spirit was no longer content with simply observing. Moving with renewed vigor, he continued his trek towards the point where the dragon had taken flight... and then he saw it.

Another dragon, flying overhead.

Though this one wasn't the same as the one he'd seen that night, the spirit knew what he must do. Tapping into some basic instinct that all elemental spirits posess, the spirit copied the essential form of the dragon he saw and became one himself, with silver scales and twisted horns.

Both surprised and pleased by this new shape, the spirit took to the skies, truly reaching towards the heavens for the first time.

"Hmm..." the Princess says, looking out of the window.

Holding your page, you check on the girls. Melanie is still looking outside with a giddy smile, and the Princess seems to be staring intently at something in the distance.

"Hm?" you reply, your gaze following the direction that the Princess is pointing in.

It's far away, but you do notice... something. As you do your best to make it out in the distance, you notice that it's gradually becoming easier to see...

...because it's coming closer.

"Wh... what is that?" Marianne says, tugging onto your sleeve.

As you focus your sights on the incoming object, you see... scales. Jet-black scales. And long, sharp claws. And massive fangs. You know what that is, there's one right in front of you.

"A Behemoth!?" you shout.
"Wha- it is! A Lindwurm!" Marianne gasps, her grip on your sleeve now like a vice. "What's one doing all the way out here, is it a wild one? And why is it so big!?"
"Oh my..." Melanie whimpers, trembling.

Yeah, that thing... it's big. WAY too big. The difference in scale between a dire wolf and one of those annoying tiny yappy dogs that rich old women in the City carry around, that's what it is compared to the Behemoths that are pulling your carriages.

Yell to the driver to pass the news to the king.

Ultimately it's his call and hes more likely to know what will trigger the behemoth's predatory instincts.

The carriage with the King and etc is ahead of us, right? They need to know what's headed our way, and considering his adventuring background, he might have a better idea of what to do than we will.
>>
>>28100324
From the side.
Your carriage is behind the one that the King's group is in.

"What? Why?" the driver shouts back from outside.
"There's a wild Behemoth coming at us! Speed up and tell the driver of the King's carriage!"
"What the f- Right away!"

The three of you are jostled a bit as your carriage speeds up so that it can catch up with the King's carriage. You hear your driver telling the other one about the incoming Behemoth... which you see is still a little bit away.
