Continuing the CATastrophe restaurant building drawquest from yesterday. It's late and I am beat but fuck it all, let's do this!
Previous thread:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/28086999/
This quest takes place in /tg/'s original setting called CATastrophe to promote it and let everyone enjoy it a bit. For info about it visit http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Setting:CATastrophe
Our brave travelers have come to a recently discovered Earless ruin on their venture to open a new enterprise and make lots of shinies. After long discussion the plan was agreed to be a "Sail-thru-restaurant" and possibly an INN if all goes well.
Last time they built a shack storing the supplies.
Nora is currently diving around the building and surveying the area. They cannot dive much deeper until they get upgraded gear. She reported that the windows are barricaded in the two lower floors and she couldn't gain entry.

> WHY couldn't she gain entry? Did she try pulling at the barricades? Are they held shut by water pressure?

> We need to tie that boat up, before the wind picks up.

> Clean the place up a bit; remove all the dangling panels, salvage the cables and rope, and take off the plants.

Nora couldn't get into the homes because they are barricaded shut and nailed in with boards it would require a strong tool to gain entry and also it is underwater so it is tiresome without better diving equipment.

Maxine remembers she saw a plastic mop on the lower floor.

Tom tied the boat out.

Alec is packing parts out on the newly declared "crafting table."
>>
>Maxine should knock the glass out of the upper window and mop up the green mess. Seems like a good place to bunk.
>>
>>28105810
Yay crafting table.

>>28106046
Mopping is a good idea. Swab the decks!

The shack for the cargo is ready.

Maxine broke the glass out and starts to mop up the murky water.

Nora says that the lower floors are might also be flooded there she does not know if the barricades are watertight or not. She can go for another dive but then she will be too tired to dive again for awhile.
>>
>>28106394
Nah, she should get some rest first. We might need her diving skillz later. No need to waste energy on something relatively unimportant.
After all, if they ARE flooded, breaking in from the top shouldn't be an issue. If not, then go us!

We got a spare rope ladder to explore it?
>>
I really like this art style you have. This looks like it could be the art for a fun little point and click adventure game.
>>
Take an axe to a corner of the floor inside the rooms on the bottom there. Maybe we can start exploring this tower-dungeon.
>>
>>28106546
Carefully, mind you. Let's not go collapsing the building by hacking through floors willy-nilly!

Nora Dresses back to her dry clothes.

Maxine continues to mop.

We have enough ropes to make another rope ladder.

Tom Could try to use the axe and make hold to the lower floor but he is not sure if this is good idea it can take long if it runs the floor it could take a lot of time to repair it.

Someone else could take a turn in diving.

By the way there are still a lot of junk in the "bottom" floor that they could try to scavenge.

Awww... shucks, thanks!

I meant make a HOLE and if that RUINS the floor it will take a lot to repair it.

>>28106598
Nora should rest, maybe take a nap in the sun, or do some fishing.

Best not axe through the floor for now, I think. But we'd better get that junk moved out and inventorised; there may be shinies!

Nice job capturing the feel of the pic, but at least think of obvious design issues, like those rope ladders which are really difficult and uncomfortable to use, not to mention the one connecting the top floor to the middle one being dangerous.

Add some stairs and railings to give some extra believability to the place.

After an extensive search Tom and Alec find the following interesting items:

A shiny gadget thing with two holes on the top with a long wire attached

An old woven basket

A ceramic statue of a fat green animal with a small thin hole on the top, Hollowed for some reason and there are rigning things inside.

A metal pot dirty but in good condition.

The rest is just plastic bottle and bags and some junk pieces of wet wood and metals and plastic.

What will they do with the new treasures?

(I'll get some dinner be back soon a bit of patience please)
>>
>>28106967
Wash out some of the plastic bottles with water before blowing into them to reinflate them. If we have the caps to them then we can use them with the bags to form some fishing traps. Bottles as boyancy so they don't just sink to the floor, bag as the trap itself (though we may need to double or triple bag it depending on how strong they are) and maybe some of our cable to tie them drifting to part of the underwater structure.

We can bait them with any leftovers from lunch.
>>
>>28107408

The metal pot and the basket are the items that are immediately useful. We can use the pot to cook lunch (and if we're going with the restaurant plan from the previous thread, this pot can be the first step to a great kitchen). It needs a fire, which in turn needs a fireplace, to be useful. The basket can be lined with plastic bags and used to store fish.

I propose to let the mimis have some lunch and R&R followed by more diving and building. Could Nora take the fire axe along with her to the flooded floors and see if she can pry open some windows or something? Or is it better to check the lower floor for a hatch or some way to go below, now that we've cleaned it all up?

Anyway, I propose some lunch, guitar playing and chillaxin' to regain strength for now.
>>
This reminds me a lot of the old mspafa forums, especially the one village builder that Dex did. Good nostalgia.

Anyways, send someone to dive with a basket or tough but light bag to gather some soil from down below. Bring it up a bit at a time. Someone else can use the wood to nail together into a frame to contain our soil, make a big planter box on one of the decks. It'll be a start of a garden once we get some seeds.
>>
Op and the rest, how about a dice rolling mechanic to spice things up a bit? We could give each of the characters a special skill or two, (like diving, shiny identification, earless lore, fixin' stuff etc) and each skill could be rolled for, rather than making all challenges dependent only on QM fiat. Howabboutit?
>>
>>28107661
They seem to have skills already, just not stated here. Otherwise, I'm happy with how it is now, and see no huge need to change.
What does OP think? His thread, after all.

Alec has "fixed" some plastic bottles, they are wrinkled but plastic is a very lasting material.

Maxie and Tom removed the panel from the top and also removed some wires with it, revealing not much but some hole in the wall, some mysterious Earless machinery that stopped working ages ago.

Let's keep trying to find a way into the lower floors. Either pry open a window below the waterline with the axe, or break a hole in the floor (unless there's a hatch anywhere).

Let's have Maxine set up the top floor to be a living quarters. We've got some cables and rope, and we can cut up the tarp and make hammocks.
>>
>>28108725
Try to find a way inside that rattly green thingy. Rattles mean shinies! There might be shinies inside! Take care not to break it, though so we can use it later as a fancy pot or something.

>To avoid the usual grimderp bullshit about humanity reasserting itself, we have decreed that the Earless have completely died off or left the planet. For the most part, there will be no secret underwater bunkers or isolated pockets of surviving Earless -- just the slowly decaying underwater ruins, and the various pieces of technology they left behind.

This confuses me, not just in it obviously involving someone with a bug up their ass, but also in that it sounds like it's trying to be definitive about it, and yet uses the language "in most cases". Nevermind that the text of the summary presents the question of humans surviving as some spooky mystery that could drive lots of great plot, and then immediately answers it in the negatory.
>>
>>28124423
People kept fucking going on about OMGHUMANITYISSTILLTHERE, so we shut it off completely.
It's not meant to have humans in it. They are gone. Dead, left, whatever. Who cares? There's fish to catch, and shinies to loot~
>>
>>28124423
Its common for folks to try and insert humans into CATastrophe, so he was nipping that in the bud. This is a tale of running a restaurant and maybe seeing what the depths has to offer. No need for HFY to run a restaurant.
>>
>>28124538
>>28124495

CATastrophe is about getting away from all the 2gritty4u bullshit that poisons everything nowadays.
>>
>>28124599
Well, the notion that humanity would inevitably return and take back the planet is grimdark, and I agree that such shenanigans would be dumb for a setting like this.

I was more thinking of humans being just yet another sort of loot to find at the bottom of the ocean, if indeed they're all in suspended animation and wouldn't survive outside of it anyways.

I can imagine a live human in a stasis tank would be a pretty fun centerpiece for a restaurant. The kids would probably love tapping on the glass to see if it'd wake up.
>>
>>28124586
>devs threw a tantrum
Not really, more of just stopped HFYfags who wanted to turn the setting into death and murder from throwing one.
>>
>>28124660

>>
>>28124660
You think they'd return to a flooded planet that's almost empty of natural resources anyway?
They have the entire solar system and beyond to roam in. Earth isn't worth the effort to them. Post-singularity wankers, the lot of them.
Or they're all hipsters and it's too mainstream for them. They like hanging out in indie venues like triton.

>It's because people were trying to "HERPDERP, HOOMANS COME BACK AND KILL ALL DA FURRIES FOR DA EMPRAH GRIMDARK GRIMDARK GRIMDARK".

Ah. That specifically. Yeah, I can see that understandably pissing people off. Not a tantrum, then, just a somewhat heavy handed response to /tg/ being spergy.

Maybe just be more specific about there not being some grand threat of humanity's return looming, but not deny the possibility that potentially useful humans that know science might be hidden away, sleeping endlessly beneath the waves.

>>
>>28124753
Some of the guys who are building systems to play this setting (FATE Accelerated, MAID, d6, etc. etc.) do intend to include rules for building new races for your own campaign, but there's five main races we've all mostly agreed on, and those are the only ones who are actually going to be crunched out in writing.

>>28125118
One of the main aims of the setting is to have a firm foundation from which the GM can improvise. If you want to say the planet's not Earth, you'll still have to include the cataclysm and the drowned cities -- but other than that, go right ahead. The entire setting's a homebrew anyway... so if you want to put your own twist on what's being "officially" released, that's fine.
>>
>>28125209
Just to clarify, here's the stuff that I see as necessary to the setting:

>99% of the planet is underwater
>This wasn't always the case; something happened, long ago, that raised the water level
>There are centuries-old ruins underwater, and lots of loot to be found in those ruins
>Some of the loot is higher-tech than is ordinarily available, because the civilization's tech level declined after the flood destroyed most of their super-futuristic advanced stuff

I may be missing something, but that's what I've got at the moment.

I suppose we could add "No great threat to all life looming just behind the veil of peace".

and cat girls.

True. The big threatening thing has ALREADY HAPPENED, and this is how civilization rebuilt itself afterward.

It's slightly less than 99%, but there's still more than enough water.

Impromptu CATastrophe dev thread, anyone?

That's a modification of the map with Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. They're probably water too.

Whoever made that image used the wrong data set, I think.
>>
>>28128560
You think so? I kind of like the idea of Antarctica still existing, but being this unattainable unknown place that can only be reached by sailing through some of the roughest seas in the Endless Blue.

Eh, working on compiling notes of quest hooks, geographical and industrial information, populations, some history, etc. from almost a year's worth of running games in the Starfall Archipelago. Trying to get it finished by the next biweekly thread. Trying to really get across the bluecollar and agricultural pride that reigns on the main island, like how the party once sat and listened to an old cat ramble on about his farm in a tavern.

Stuff like the early Coin Crisis of Stardust Port, where the arcade machine coin press they used for standard currency led to a period of unrest when some divers looted an old arcade that used the same tokens. Or buried city on the east side of the island called the Stilts, with most of it buried under the ancient lava flows that left only the tallest of builds peeking out in the water on the edge of land.

here are some drafts for some antagonists I wrote up for CATastrophe. Being drafts, im still working on fleshing them out a bit or just making general edits.

==The Dread Pirate Roberta== "Surrender you doggie-paddlers, Wahahaha!!"

The Dread Pirate Roberta, the self proclaimed queen of the High seas and scourge of the Endless Blue. Orphaned at a young age, Roberta always liked two things: Shiney objects and adventure on the high seas and she is willing to do whatever is necessary to get what she wants. Roberta has a penchant for theatrics and she is as stylish as she is dangerous, ready to swing aboard a vessel with her robotic crew. She is also known for extorting settlements for goods or just raiding them if shes in the mood. Roberta does not normally take prisoners (unless there is value in doing so) and often leaves her victims striped of all their shineys along with anything that looks remotely valuable, and left adrift in the endless blue or marooned on a deserted island. Of course she is nice enough to leave them with some supplies to get to the nearest settlement. After all, it would be a shame and a waste to lose "potental return coustumers" as she puts it.

==The Teknomancer== "Behold, the knowlege and power of the Earless"

The Teknomancer is an a mysterious person with a great knowledge of Earless tech. In her youth, the Teknomancer spent most of her days tinkering with shinys and was quite gifted, becoming quite proficient in basic robotics and eventually learning various earless programming languages. Sadly, Her tinkering eventually turned into an obsession. Forgoing the typical Mimi' activities of partying and exploring, She would seclude herself in her room for long periods of time to study earless technology. After too many incidents involving misbehaving robots, missing shineys and a few stepped on tails, She was eventually kicked out of her village and left to wander the Endless Blue. She continues to work to expand her knowledge of Earless technology despite all this and has made quite a mysterious name for herself with stories ranging from mysteriously arriving in villages to quickly study a few significant pieces of tech and just as quickly depart to full raids on villages with robots to obtain shineys. In the eyes of the outside Kemo, her skill with technology appears to border on the arcane. Skilled manipulation of Holo-interfaces helps her cement this reputation where ever she goes. She is often accompanied by a small retinue of small robots that assist her and she owns several highly advanced pieces of technology. One of which is a staff like shiney which functions as her main tool to interact with electronics and allows her to interface with almost any shiney (computers, robots, doors, locks, ect...)as well as providing the tools to study technology including various scanners, data recorders, and analysis devices. It also acts like a personal computer which is also able to project her holo interfaces and provides her with another ways of interacting with Earless tech.
