[x] Let's see if this cannon is worth a damn. Go after a dread!

“Merlin! We're goin' after a dread!” You say, rolling the fighter over and trying to gain enough distance for a decent run. “Unlock the missiles, let the girls know!”

“Done!” She says. “The cannon should use your gun sights, but it's got a longer range. They said something about a charge time, but said it's short, so remember that. Remember it's a beam- we don't know how strong it is so-”

“So don't expect miracles.” you say. “Can you do your thing to it?”

Merlin giggles. “What did you think I was planning to do?” She says. “It's actually ambivalent towards the whole situation, and thinks my pilot is insane.”

“You're holding a discussion with a prototype cannon.” You say, flatly, juking an inbound missile and listening to the distinct thump of missiles dropping free from your bays.

“Yes.” Merlin says, flatly. “And monitoring the jet. We're doing it again, by the way.”

“Doing what?” You ask, rolling over the top of a maser beam.

“Impossible things.”

“Wonderful.” You respond, lining up for the shot and pulling the trigger.

Nothing happens.

“Oh goddamn-” your cut off as your forward screens momentarily dim themselves and a ravening spear of man-made lightning arcs forward, joined a second later by it's twin from Alyssa's jet. The two beams slam into- and through- the dreadnought, blowing through the thing to impact on the ground, digging out craters.

TIME FOR CUTE PILOTS DOING CUTE THINGS
>>
The dreadnought lists, smoke pouring from it's wounds as secondary explosions tear great chunks out it's superstructure. It's weapons dim, and you can see it's nose push down in a shallow, controlled dive.

“Holy shit....” Alyssa gasps, her voice thick with disbelief. “Did- Did we kill it?”

Before you can answer, you're caged in by masers from the other two dreadnoughts, forcing you to roll and twist to try and stay one step ahead of their firing solutions. “Whatever we did” You grunt. “We got their attention.”

“The army! They're retreating!” Katya calls. You manage to glance over your shoulder- noting that there's fighters on you now, and the dread you hit has leveled out, but it's turning, slowly, around.

You can't see much, just some dust trails- but they're from the western edge of the battlefield, where the battered and outnumbered NATO troops are withdrawing.

The radio lights up with cries of disbelief- you're winning your fight, you've completely frozen their air assets. How could the army lose?

You're about to ask for direction from Ice- do you withdraw, or stay in it, hoping the army will rally- when the decision is made for you.

Voices- not many- singing. La Marseilles- the French national anthem. “What- who is... Jean Luc!” Rosalie cries.

The trails of dust of maybe a dozen tanks rolls right into the flank of the Soviet guards. The singing doesn't pause as the French armor goes to work, freezing the soviet advance by spearing into it's vulnerable side.

Someone- presumably Jean Luc- responds in French. After a brief- and frantic on Rosalie's part- conversation you hear him laugh. “This is cuirassier calling the white death! Let us show these little girls how men fight, oui? You keep them busy in the air, we will deal with their ground forces, eh?”

[] “Done deal, Cuirassier. Let's show them how it's done!”

[x] “Done deal, Cuirassier. Let's show them how it's done!”

You grin, a feral, bloodthristy grin. One that splits your lips and bares your teeth beneath your armored oxygen mask- one that makes mothers grab their children and chills run down people's spines. Damn shame, you think, no one can see it.

“Done deal, Cuirassier. Let's show them how it's done!” You return, Finally breaking free of the pattern of maser fire from the two remaining and fully active dreadnoughts, arrowing into the fighters swarming after you. They scatter- and you laugh, careful to keep your fingers away from the mic toggle on your throttle. Ice would section your ass so fast if she heard that laugh.

The fighter cover you brush aside like so many gnats- swatting two from the sky in a second with the briefest bursts of your cannons, crippling a third and cursing- that shot should have taken off his vertical stabilizer. Oh well.

Sixty fighters, and most of them are on you. The open network is still echoing with the sounds of the French singing- though the song is growing weaker as the tank crews have to focus on their task at hand. Surprise and speed are on their side, and but the guards are reacting, and it's turning into one hell of a brawl down there.

Up here, though, you're untouchable- better than you've ever been. Ah, if Konstantina could see you now, part of you thinks, as you line up, nose to nose with a dreadnought- you'd have to pry her off you with a crowbar. Maybe the jaws of life.

Your Tesla cannon speaks again- gutting the dreadnought. It lurches midair, then begins falling, whatever martian propulsion that was active in it thoroughly destroyed by the man-made lightning from the Tesla cannon. You roll over the top of the falling dread, dodging secondaries that claim one of your pursuers. The rest back off to a safer distance- unwilling or unable to match you.

The live dreadnought begins turning, the fighters now almost exclusively attacking you. You knock another out of the sky with one of your last Agiles- the AMRAAMs all spent by the witches what seems like an age ago.

“Frank w-we've only got one missile left.” Merlin coughs.

“Cannons?” You ask, throwing your fighter sideways and shaking your head- your nose is ticklish. Gets that way sometimes on oxygen. “W-we've still got ammo, but...”

“It'll work” You grunt, spinning your fighter around to engage another sukhoi- one of the fighters that was dogging you seconds earlier. “We'll take them down one by one if we have to.”

Merlin doesn't respond to that- probably busy as hell back there, just keeping things together. Still, you trust her. The Flanker dives, giving you a split second solution- you shoot, raking his port turbine, and he starts to tumble, the yaw slewing him sideways.

“Haha, perhaps this was not my best idea!” Jean Luc calls. “Mais, it worked, they are stopped. If only the Germans still had the fight they had in nineteen forty...”

“Haha, jaaaa.” A German answers, clearly hamming up his accent for anyone that might- and probably is- recording this. “But in ninteen forty ve had vorse opponents, ja Frenchman? Ze seventh panzer was clearly vasted on zem. But on zees, ve haf found worthvile adversary. Panzergruppe! Schnell! Schnell! Into zem!”

“Jesus Christ, I think all tankers are insane.” You mutter, diving towards the hard deck and pulling up barely above the treetops, casting a fast eye down at your fuel gauge- you're deep into the red, but you can recover nearby, so you've got a couple more minutes if you want them. Still, if you want to land on the Saratoga, you need to break off now.

"She has been locked in her room since the battle for Berlin began," Petrov responds, worry filling his voice. "I've tried many times to get her to come out, but she's...not responded in a way that would suggest it to be wise for me to enter."

"Well, we should convince her. I am certain she would want to hear details of 'her love' in combat." Putin chuckles. "She has been a little...flighty, since his visit."

Putin manages to maintain his confident smirk and his composure until he and Petrov arrive at her room's door, and hear the panting on the other side. There is panicked shouting from a radio barely heard alongside it.

"Y-yes...my love, k-kill them all, just like...that."

Putin about faces. "She's fine."

[x] RTB now. You've done your part.

Your aggression wars with your common sense for a second- and common sense brutally beats it into submission. You stay low and fast, withdrawing west- getting the best view of the Seventh Panzer division's attack as they slam into the Soviets, reinforcing the remains of Jean Luc's company. The formerly retreating NATO troops have turned at bay as well, engaging the guards from two directions.

The guards air don't want any part of you anymore- letting you go unmolested, like they're glad to see you go. Of course, the arriving Luftwaffe aircraft may have something to do with that, making the options for the guards clear- chasing you is a bad idea.

You pull up and drop back to a cruising speed once you're clear of the immediate battlezone, calling out on the squadron frequency for Ice.

“Jesus Frank, what was that?” She asks, by way of response. “Are you hit? We're withdrawing, the Luftwaffe and ADA have the airspace. Can you make the Saratoga?”

You shake your head, trying to get your eyes to refocus. Takes a couple tries, but they do, eventually. You tap the fuel gague. “We'll have to hit a tanker, but yeah, we should be able to.” You say.

“Ok, alright. Good. You're not hit?” She asks.

“Merlin?” You ask over the intercom. “We're fine, right?”

“Y-yeah.” She says. “They didn't... didn't even get close to hitting us. That was amazing Frank.”

1/3 (I think)
>>
>>28134222
Yes.
>>
“That was mostly you.” You respond. “There's no way that was-”

“That was mostly you.” She says. “Well, kind of. I just... guided it. Whatever it was. I-I don't know, Frank. I'm-”

“You're the best RIO a guy could ask for, Samantha. Can we make the Sara?”

“Y-yeah. We'll need a tanker though, we're on vapor.”

“Ok.” You say, and flip back over to the squadron frequency. “We're way low on gas, but we're not hit. Merlin says we're fine.”

“Oh bullshit.” Slider says, and you pick up on her circling your aircraft. “There's no way you went into that and-” She goes quiet.

“Slider?” You and Ice ask, almost simultaneously.

“Jesus, they didn't touch you.” She says, her voice almost a whisper. “That's- what are you?”

“Really goddamn tired.” You state, bluntly, as waves of fatigue crash into you.

Slider, for her part, doesn't respond.

The rest of the flight back is tense- you're about to divert when an A-6 tanker, one of several sent up by the CAG, breaks station and hauls ass towards you to get you the fuel you're going to need. You rock your wings in thanks and he just flashes his lights, heading back to his anchor. Those guys never get the credit they deserve, you think.

2/4 (I counted wrong. and had specific post breaks. my bad!)

>That was amazing Frank.”

The witches recover first- it takes them less time to do it, and they're a lot less likely to have problems- they come in, flare, and use their jets to brake themselves - no wire to hit blind. The twins are down next, their landing a 1 wire- sloppy, but it'll work, you think.

You're down last- despite being tired and having to rapidly blink away a fuzz growing in your eyesight, you make sure everyone else gets down safely. Your own landing is sloppy- you barely snag the fourth wire, but any landing you can walk away from, right?

Well, you think you can walk, anyway. You taxi off to your spot near the elevator, waiting for the crew to give you the cut signal before you start shutting your jet down. You pop the hatch and cast about for your things- collecting the snickers wrappers and unclasping your helmet- fucking oxygen mask anyway, you think. Then you just lean back in your ejection seat and close your eyes, resting for a second while the crew outside drops the ladder and waits.

You hit your seat controls and ride it out of the cockpit, still trying to gather the energy to get out of your fighter. The fresh air seems to help- you laboriously swing one leg, then the other, up and over, getting your boots on the walkway and pausing.

One of the ground crew nods when another turns and says something to him, while two of them start up the ladder.

“Take it easy, sir.” They say, helping you sit on the walkway while one looks down in Merlin's office, while the other supports you, one hand on your shoulder “Why don't you sit there till the docs get here?”

You nod, out of it. The doc sounds like a friendly guy.

You wake up with a start, whatever dream you were having gone in a second.

“It's ok, Frank, it's ok. Shh. We're fine We're all-” Slider says, soothingly, stroking your hair, one arm wrapped around your chest awkwardly, like the angle isn't right.

“Where-” You start, “Is-”

“You're on the USNS Mercy. We're tied up in Britain. Berlin was two weeks ago.” She says. “Merlin is fine- she recovered much faster than you did. You- You gave us a hell of a scare, you asshole. You both did.”

“What-”

She lets go of you, water glistening in her eyes. “L-listen, I need to go call Ice. She wanted to know the second you woke up.”

"Stalinka!" Petrov adjusts his uniform collar and pounds on the door. "Stalinka I am coming inside the room!"

"N-no! NO! I-I-I AM-" She yammers, just as Petrov opens the door.

Fully clothed, Stalinka lies at the foot of the bed, mostly wrapped around a full length body pillow, a picture of Frank Bishop on it, more or less facing her. One of her arms is wrapped tightly around it, while another appears to be paused midway through patting herself on the head. "The Butcher of My Heart" is scrawled crudely on the back of the pillow. Next to her is a broken radio that apparently fell off the bed with her.

"I am indecent." She whispers, redder than the flag of the Soviet Union she has hanging on the wall next to an equally large poster of Frank Bishop.

"So I see." Petrov mumbles in response.

"OUT! OUT OUT OUT!" she screams, shoving Petrov (surprisingly gently) out of the room. before slamming the door shut.

"I am sorry ma'am!" Petrov calls through the door. There is a long silence before she finally responds, terribly embarrassed.

"M-may I get another radio, c-comrade? I appear to have broken this one."

Probably would have PASSED out. At least.

That'd have been great. Merlin freaks & has to trigger the ejection and we lose the Wyvern and the cannon at the least.

the amazing part is that even after that we managed a mid-air refueling and a carrier landing

That would have been utterly fantastic for the morale of the NATO ground units as well.

[x] “Not yet. Slider, what happened?”

You shake your head, looking around for something to drink- damn, you're thirsty.

Slider hands you a clear plastic cup full of clear, sweet water. “Take it easy, Frank.” She cautions.

You, of course, don't listen. She just sighs. “Of course you had to wake up on my watch.” She says, handing you a paper towel. “You spilled.”

“I noticed.” You supply, somewhat sarcastically. “So what-”

“We don't know for sure.” She says, sitting down at the foot of your bed. “It's- Ok, it's like this. A witch cannot draw enough energy to hurt herself. She just can't. No witch in the history of ever has been able to do it- you just, ya know, run out.”

She sighs. “You and Merlin on the other hand, no one has a fucking clue. It's scaring a lot of people, Frank. Hell, we're tied up outside an old witch holding- there's a good dozen matrons in there, arguing over who gets to talk to you and Merlin first, and why Ice is being such a cunt to them.” She smiles at that.

“So we.. I'm lost.” You say, scratching your head. “We drew too much power or some shit?”

Slider shrugs. “I- we. We think so. We already knew Merlin was as strong as anyone anyone's ever seen before, but now the going theory is...” She looks around. “The going theory is that Merlin's amazingly powerful, and you're some kind of new gnome. Something else, something... different. An emergent talent, I guess.”

She shrugs again. “You've definitely caught the eye of almost every matron ever, and they all want to talk to you as soon as you wake up.” She laughs. “Ain't gonna fuckin happen.”

“So where's Merlin?” You ask, noting that one of her hands is on your shin- you don't say a damn word.

>>
“Refused to leave the ship.” Slider says, motioning to the other bed in the room- there's no medical equipment on it, just a couple blankets and your- well, Merlin's- jacket. “She's been here ever since they cleared her to walk. She ran down to the chow hall- it was her turn.” Slider grins. “Ice lets her slack off, but Samantha's playing her like a fiddle. I make her do her fair-”

“Frank!” Merlin says, dropping the trays of food- Slider just sighs again, then has to duck out of the way as Merlin scrambles up and hugs you, crying.

“Oh my god Frank I'm s-so sorry...” She wails.

“For what?” You ask, returning the hug.

“I- I hurt us. That was me a-and I...” She says, pulling away.

“That's not what Slider said.” You respond, calmly. “She said no one knows what happened. That it was probably me.”

Merlin doesn't answer, she just shakes her head- either in denial of that or because she can't properly articulate a response to it.

2/3 (oops)
>>
“So how'd we do?” You ask Slider, who's looking at the lost food sadly.

“We won, if that's what you're asking. The dreadnaughts only count as one, by the way.” She says. “Rosalie is on leave, spending time with Jean Luc- he's a neat guy, I'm happy for the girl.” She smiles. “The Seventh panzer tore them a new one, and the rallied troops that had been on line were able to push them back. The guards took heavy losses, we think, and the front's been quiet since then.

“What about-” You start, one arm still wrapped around Merlin.

“Aliums?” Slider shrugs. “Nothing yet.” She sighs. “Now, look, as much as I'd like to keep you to myself for the rest of the day, I really have to go tell Ice.”

“Thanks” You say. “Should I be scared? And was that an offer?”

“Was wh- oh. Wouldn't you like to know?” She asks, turning to leave. “And I'll let your doc know to come by, too.”

You can't help but laugh- Merlin looks at you like you're crazy. Two people to tell you how dumb you are. Wonderful.

And that's it for the night!

So, here's how this vacation is gonna work. I'm going to take a break from 89- we're actually at a decent point to do so, I think. WE're going to get a short- and I stress short- series- SW45. this will follow Ice's grandfolks through their part of the war. then we'll come back to 89 after that's run. I may take a week completely off in there somewhere, IDK yet.

However- and i want to make this clear, because I know how this can go- I plan to come back to 89 as soon as 45 is done- again, with possibly a week's break in there somewhere. This is not a indefinite break, this isn't a "Well, i'll return to the setting sometime"- this is definite, probably... IDK. a month, maybe six weeks at the outside. maybe. probably not even that. Latest is new year's week- and again, that's the absolute latest, barring unforeseen catastrophe.

But anyway, guys, you've been great, and I hope you've enjoyed so far. I look forward to another season.

Till then, guys, keep an eye on the twitter for the runs of 45, (I swear I'll link them, I promise) and if you need to reach me, hit me up on the IRC- I'm almost always on.

Anyway, guys, cheers, and we'll see you next week for some prop planes. I know you gents need your fix, right?

As Frank and Merlin left the room, Ice turned to Katya and Slider, a small amount of blush still on her face.
“You two finish up,” she said, “I’m going to check the Intel shop.” Turning quickly she headed out of the room.
Katya turned to Slider, a small frown on her face, “I thought Comrade Ice had just come from the Intel.”
“That’s because she did,” said Slider, “and she’s not going to Intel.”
“Oh,” replied Katya, realization dawning on her face as Slider stood up, pocketing a few loose shells as she did. “Where are you going?” she asked the departing prankster.
“None of your business,” said Slider as she paused at the door, “Just like it’s none of my business where you’re going after this.”
Katya immediately understood what Slider meant and nodded back.
As Slider left the doorframe, Katya thought about what she needed to get as she stood and pocketed a few magazines.
Heading down to her room Katya dug through her things and found what she wanted, her old cap badge.
Heading back towards the deck, she ran into Slider, who simply nodded to her as they ascended.
Finally making it out onto the deck, the two of them headed towards the waiting form of Frank and Merlin’s Wyvern.
Unsurprisingly, Ice was standing next to it, head down and apparently torn as to whether or not she should put what appeared to be a small canvas belt into the cockpit.

However as they approached within a few feet of her, she looked up, her face shooting red as she recognized who they were.

“W-what are you two doing here?” she asked, trying and failing to put a commanding tone into her voice.

“The same thing you are,” said Slider, her voice lacking its usual mirth. Turning to look at Katya and then back at Ice she asked, “So are we doing this or what?”

“I wish to do so,” answered Katya, looking at both of her “rivals”, “Despite his tendencies towards recklessness, I still care for him.” Turning fully to Ice she looked her in the eye, “But I leave the final decision up to you Comrade Ice.”
Looking both Katya and Slider in their eyes before lowering her own back to the ground, Ice sighed. “Fine then,” she said, looking back up at them “It’s not exactly a secret how any of us feel about him. So, let’s send him off with his favors.”
All Slider and Katya nodded in response as Ice turned and climbed up the steps built into the fighter to set her belt inside.

As she climbed down, Katya nodded at Slider who climbed up as Katya and Ice watched.
As Slider came down, Katya finally took her turn up the side of the Wyvern. Looking in she saw Ice’s belt and a piece of lace resting on the control stick. She took her aviation badge and set it with the others, leaving no room for Frank to miss any of them.

Climbing back down she nodded again to Ice and Slider and the three of them headed towards where their Strikers and weapons were waiting for him.
“I think I would be quite upset if he had done this on purpose,” Katya muttered to the other two as they reached the hangar.
“I think that goes for all of us,” returned Ice.
“He’s still an ass-hat,” said Slider, venom completely absent from her voice.
“Da Comrade Slider,” answered Katya, the small smirk on her face mirrored by Ice as they reached their equipment, “I think we can all agree on that.”

Her head hurts, her throat is sore, and her mouth still tastes of vodka. The bed underneath feels as though it's moving entirely on its own. It's possibly the worst morning ever to feel like this, but the world will not stop for Tabitha Kazanski to recover from the worst hangover she has experienced in a long time. One part of her, the part that embodies military discipline, the part that demands better of herself and those around her, berates her for drinking so heavily.

The other part wants to vomit all over that side of her.

"God, Tabby, you were in there with her for hours." Slider is over her with a huge grin on her face. "Get up, buttercup."

"rglrbrlbbbmrlrblrmrlmrlllrlrlbblll" Ice responds, as dignified as she can manage.

"Do you remember ANYTHING from last night?"

"Huuuh? Grrrbllbrlrbrbrlllll?"

Slider flashes a single photo in front of Tabitha's face. It takes a moment for her eyes to focus on the picture, and she angrily wipes sleep away from them, lifting herself closer to the picture until-

"HUHWHATTHEFUCK!? NOIDIDN'TTHATSNOT- RACHEL! RACHELOHMYGOD!"

"I didn't know you were into her like that." Slider grins before pocketing the photo. Ice swipes at her uselessly, falling out of bed and hitting the deck, hard.

"Rachel. I will, I PROMISE YOU, I will do unspeakably horrible things to you if you don't give me that picture right now, swear on all that I have ever, EVER held dear to me in my LIFE."

"Come and get it~!" Rachel dances just out of reach of another panicked swipe from Ice, waving goodbye as she slips out of their shared quarters. Ice tries to pursue, but falls face first into the ground instead, another wave of dizziness and nausea striking her.

"Oh God," she moans. Rachel leans back into the room a moment later.

"By the way: he's coming home. Today, a few hours from now, even."

Ice's panic intensifies.

Breakfast is finished in the mess, but that doesn't matter to Ice. She could eat later. Rachel would bitch about that, good friend that she was. Ice was used to it.

There is absolutely no way she would entertain the possibility of allowing anyone else to see her in this state. Especially not the younger witches! Goose is still impressionable, and Maverick didn't need any more excuses to go nuts than to see her CO suffering a hangover. And poor Merlin, Ice had to be ready to support her, assist her while she dealt with Frank being gone.

The Icelady was supposed to be better than this. Christ, what was she thinking?

"You weren't Tabitha, you weren't thinking at ALL," she snarls to herself, quickly preparing to sit under a cold shower until the world stopped spinning around her. That she'd managed to get to it without falling over her own feet was impressive.

Steam already comes from one of the other stalls, another witch had similar ideas to Ice, and the singing in Russian gives away who that is.

'Just go, just get in the shower, she won't see me if I'm inside my own stall, just go just go just go.'

The door suddenly is flung wide open, giving Tabitha Kazanski a long eye-full of the competition. The song Katya Litvyak was singing is strangled in her throat as she stares back, frozen mid-pirouette, apparently having been very into her private performance.

"You-" Katya blushes hard.

"I-" Ice starts.

The door slams shut, and Ice all but sprints into the next open stall, turns on the water as cold as it can get, and hits her head against the wall for the next five minutes.

Other than the sore spot on her forehead, it's a very refreshing shower.
>>
>>28135263
Her stomach is bothering her, grumbling loud enough that she can hear it over the running water, but Ice internally waves that away. She could grab a snack later, she was sure.

Katya, for her part, remains in her own stall, humming awkwardly to herself.

"U-um." Ice starts again. "So, I'd like to apologize."

"S-So would I," Katya answers. "I believe I called you a coward for trying to stop after the first bottle, and you, ah, rose to the occasion."

"I don't even remember that-" Ice starts, about to laugh until she runs the sentence through her head again. "First bottle?!"

"Yes, ma'am."

"How many?"

"Only two. We did...manage to finish both."

Ice hits her head against the wall again. "What is wrong with me?"

"A hangover, perhaps?" Katya replies sheepishly.

The disciplined side of Ice rages yet again, and she's conscious enough right now that what it has to say embarrasses her enough to flush a bright red in the privacy of the stall. How dare she even THINK of drinking so heavily! What would the Captain say? Her family?

In her minds eye, she could even see Frank, shaking her head in disapproval of her. In the back of her mind, she knows it's not necessarily logical to think that he'd be disappointed in her for one indiscretion. She still feels that she should be a better officer than this.

'When the hell did he become the professional one?'

She could remember how different he was when he first came to Spellcaster. Remembered hating him. Remembered the private rants she'd unleashed on poor Rachel about how the guy was going to get her girls killed. Hell, she'd never even felt close to as much distrust even towards Katya.

She could recount, perfectly, how he'd changed her impression of him, to respect, and to something much more.

She remembered watching him die in front of her, and remembered watching him take off his helmet in that hangar. She badly wants to cry all of the sudden, but cannot allow herself to do so.
>>
>>28135471
Katya had left well before Ice managed to finish cleaning up, which suits her just fine. On top of being taller and prettier, as far as Ice is concerned, she's graceful, knows that she is, and apparently is a hell of a singer. Damnit, damnit, damnit.

Being alone allows Ice to take time to collect her thoughts: 'He's really coming back. He's okay. No, no crying. Calm down. Deep breath.

God I'm hungry.'

She's just about finished dressing when Katya suddenly walks back into the locker room, a pair of breakfast bars in hand.

"Slider and I insist, ma'am." She smiles and waves the food in front of her CO. Ice is about to answer calmly that she'd very much appreciate it, but another rumble of the stomach fills the air.

"Tabby or Tabitha are fine and thank you andcanIhavethatnow?"

They sit together on a bench near their lockers, and tear into the breakfast bars. Ice tries to eat slowly and politely, but hunger bids her to inhale it while she stares at Katya and tries to think of something to say. She's certain it's weird, and probably a little bit creepy.

"Mmf," Ice says.

"Mhmm." Katya agrees, giggling at Ice's expression.

After finishing the meal, Ice takes in a deep breath, steeling herself. Katya shrinks back slightly, in anticipation.

"Okay, I don't remember anything we said last night. At all. All we have are photos THAT CAN NEVER EVER EVER EVER BE ALLOWED TO BE SEEN OUTSIDE OF YOU, ME AND SLIDER."

"Completely understood. You are a very bad kisser while drunk."

"That that that is not a subject we are discussing," Ice almost shouts. Katya's grin is too reminiscent of Rachel for her liking, and her mind scrambles to find a way to get the Soviet off balance.

"In vino veritas, comrade Ice. You said many things I don't think you would say otherwise."

"That's what I'm afraid of!"

"It is nothing to be embarrassed about."

"It might be depending on how I said it!"

"You only said the truth."

"Not helping, Katya."

"You are in love with Frank Bishop." Ice's jaw drops open silently, unable to formulate a response beyond a squeak of embarrassment. "You want him, and you hope that he wants you, more than he wants anyone else, despite the appearances you've tried to maintain. Not very different from myself, I've come to accept."

Katya is starting to understand why Slider plays the games of blackmail that she does, and Ice is avidly aware that this is the case. She prepares to deny everything vehemently...

...and instead, she sighs and nods her head sadly.

"I'm sorry I did what I did to you last night, and if I said anything wrong, I'm sorry about that too," Tabitha's voice is raw with emotion, once again holding back that urge to break down in front of her squadmate. "Ever since he left on this James Bond-inspired bullshit adventure, I've had time to think, you know? Did I also tell you how much I hated him when he first came to us? Him and his old RIO? I hated those two...MEN. God. And I'm pretty sure he hated me. Maybe he still does. Maybe he's just fucking with me because he's getting back at at me for being The Ice Queen of the Pacific. You know that's what Maverick used to call me right? What they all called me? Even Slider. Even she gave up on trying to change me.

You know who didn't? Frank Bishop. So when he was t-t-taken from us I-

I don't even wanna talk about that, I just know that he's changed me, changed us all for the better. I really, really believe that. Merlin's the most powerful witch, maybe ever, and Frank has helped her realize this. He's rescued you. He's big brother to Mav and Goose. He doesn't treat Rachel like garbage. He's taught me what's really important to focus on as a commanding officer, though I admit I'm a work in progress but aren't we fucking all!"

'Goddamnit,' Tabitha Kazanski thinks to herself, 'I told myself I wouldn't cry.'
>>
Holy shit just woke up. That's how you end a thread/ I guess "season", bit late but good run always Ghost!
>>
>>28136369

"A-and what have I done in return for everything he's done for us?" Tabitha wails, standing from the bench and punching her locker door angrily. "I've g-gone behind his back, behind Rachel's, yours, EVERYBODY'S, and I've t-talked to some matrons about his and Merlin's talents! Good job, Commander, you might be sending this cute and stupid pilot you like off to be a lab rat, the sort of thing a certain Soviet witch you know was afraid of happening to him a couple days ago! Maybe she'll forgive you if the nice American matrons are the ones having their way with him!"

Katya waits until she is certain that Ice has finished venting before guiding her back to a seat. She finds herself hugging the younger witch.

"Yeah, I guess I am kinda sorta into the guy." Ice manages to joke, still sobbing heavily.

Katya insists that things are okay. Neither one really believes that.

Her shirt is cleanly pressed, medals in place exactly where they should be. Tabitha Kazanski is a model witch and naval officer once more. She stands on the deck of the Sara next to Brigette, one of the new arrivals from before Frank's little excursion. Katya did not want to be there. Ice insisted, but...

It feels like she's waited for hours in this very spot for Frank to come home. The Greyhound's landing almost startles her.

He stands next to the mishapen transport. Cocksure grin plastered on his face, his eyes immediately meet hers. It's like he knew she'd be waiting for him. Christ, what an asshole.

“Ah, de baron hisself do be returnin' from is trip, do he?” Brigette says, stifling a laugh and turning to look at Ice. “I'll be 'handlin our kit, you deal wit him, deal?”

Ice looks over at her. “I guess, since you asked so nicely.”

'Sorry, Frank.'
