And then you wait. It's like playing air chicken, only that if you lose, you'll end up a bloody mess on the Martian carrier's runway. It'd be hilarious if someone did try to attack a ship in this manner, though.

Two minutes. Your bogey is getting dangerously close now.

One minute. Any second now, Lieutenant...

Thirty seconds. The Martian ace fires it's masers. You spin your plane. It was real close.

Twenty seconds. You drop the bombs early. But can you pull out in time?

Ten seconds. It looks like the bugger's about to come for another pass.

Which is what he, or she, (you weren't really sure if Martians had gender to begin with) would have done if there wasn't a juicier target. The telltale flicker of magic shielding confirms it to be a witch.

The basic goal of air combat is to ensure that you have more energy than the other guy. And then use said energy to punch holes in the other guy. Sometimes literally.

It's a strategy that even a rookie pilot would catch on fast, if he hadn't been shot out. And you're one of the best around.

It takes very little effort to get above the gaggle that's on the poor pilot's tail. Damn fools were so concentrated on their prey that they didn't notice you until you managed to shoot one down.

But now you've got their attention and the return fire is very, very thick. Most of the gaggle peel off to fight you, leaving the poor guy with a much more manageable portion to run away from.

From then on it was a simple effort to get surrounded. They've got you trapped in the middle of a Lufbery Circle, and you can't excatly fly over or under.

There's no way you're gonna crack the circle. So you opt to do the next best thing: dive.

The martians aren't that stupid, though, and follow you down. There's a few who keep circling around, but the rest of them follow you. You're only hoping they were as dumb as they seemed.

You're not sure if their planes were good divers, but it's just something you'll have to find out for yourself.
