My people, hearken to me! Once again a year has passed, and a new one will rise after this night. As has always been the tradition of our tribe we will welcome the upcoming year with the telling of our history.

This has been a year of change--all years are, I suppose--but the changes brought on in this year put all the rest to shame. As such, I will begin the telling of our story with the very beginning.

In the earliest days when all things were new, our god Orlanth was one among many...
>>
>>28187359

I say we be fierce and barbaric to the extreme: honest and gracious, yet bloodthirsty and merciless to those who slight us.
>>

>>28187390
But he did not remain so for long, for even before he claimed his rightful place, Orlanth was too great to be one of many. His marriage to Ernalda Earth-Mother was just one among many of the great accomplishments that marked him for greatness.

Our tribe was there! Who can tell me what role our ancestors played at the great wedding? Did we stand with Elmal? Drink with Orlanth? Or did our women take council from the Earth Mother?
>>
>>28187409
I always play these games peacefully. I like to think of it as a puzzle by trying to keep everybody happy all the time.
>>
>>28187478

I vote our ancestors stood with Elmal, ever vigilant against the forces of darkness and their heathen gods.
>>
>>28187478
1, Elmal is a pretty cool guy
>>
>>28187478

Elmal the Golden, the Defender, the Lord of the Sun was our best friend in those days. I know this to be true.
>>
Keep in mind, Orlanth boosts Leadership, which is the primary stat of your clan head.

That said, Elmal's my guy too. Anyone else want to have a say?
>>
>>28187542
Well, three people already said Elmal. I'd go Orlanth, but that's because I'm pretty vanilla.

I think that if someone has two or three says in one direction, feel free to go in that direction.
>>
>>28187569

2 or 3 says, giving everyone a couple minutes to reply, seems good.

Wait for too long and people will go to other threads or start samefagging to up their votes.
>>
>>28187542

I know Orlanth is technically the best choice, but come on. Elmal is the shit.
>>
>>28187596

I mean, we can handle a challenge, right guys?

Indeed, while others stood aside, our ancestors recognized that even at a time of great joy there would be a need for men and women to do their duty.

But that is not the only of our clan's exploits in the heroic age! Who among you remembers the earliest of our tribe's exploits, undertaken at the side of a god-on-earth?
>>
>>28187645
I'm not writing this one out. If anyone has questions ask 'em now, myself or one of your fellows will answer as we can.
>>

Sky Bear for all round goodies and general badassitude

Or Dance since we didn't take Orlanth as our patron god, so we can still get good leadership

Indeed, while our tribe did many great things in the beforetimes, our ancestors tell us stories about fighting alongside Orlanth at Extinguish Field as much as all the other stories combined.

King Vingkot made a request of us that, though small at the time, profoundly marked us. He sent the Nalda Bin to us, to take in. Did we welcome them as our new family, or take them as thralls?
>>
>>28187882

We are strong warriors who have little patience for evildoers. Since our enemies cannot always ransom their men, and sometimes to ransom them would be unwise, it only fits that we hire out some of our captives to our carls.

I vote thralls.
>>
>>28187882
We fight for righteousness. It is unwise to keep those who cannot defend themselves under our oppression. We gave them a chance to work in our tula as cotters.
>>

Though they lacked power or influence, clearly they were our brothers, the scions of Orlanth. Slavery and total dominion is the realm of Yelm, and we fought him for such atrocities, amongst others.

Although thralls are fucking awesome good times for sacrificing to the Earth Shaker for her blessings

King Vingkot made use of our tribe in many ways. Not least among them was as the vanguard of the army raised agaist his enemy:

Boztakang
Ukkar Gra
Chinkis Mor
Tada the Green
Faralinthor
Ves Venna, Son of Valind

whose kind remain our gravest enemies even today.

In time, the scars left by Chaos receded from the world. We gave thanks to our ancestors and the Living Deities, and worked to revive the gods who had been overcome by Chaos. At this time, one power stood above the rest in the soul of our tribe. Who was it?

Strange indeed is this world where the gods sit aloof from mankind. Years ago the dragons came to the tribe offering friendship.

How did the tribe react to the dragons?
Hostilely--Dragons are the enemy!
Poorly--Dragons are not to be trusted.
Coolly--Dragons have nothing to interest us.
Warmly--Dragons have much to offer us.

Problem with that, is doing heroquests. Generally heroquests involve decisions voted on by the people in the thread and perusal of the quest's myth for hints. So you'll be stuck with other people voting on what your character does during the quest, because otherwise they would just have to watch you tell OP what your choices are for like an hour.

I guess there could be a way, radically different, of running a game like this, but it might be better as an actual gaming session: a PnP or whatnot with everyone's characters on a clan council.

Who among you would not risk danger to avoid sin? Pharaoh divided our people, and we were left with the choice of kin-slaying or escape. Dragon Pass was our solution, a place where we might begin anew, where Pharaoh's agents yet feared to tread.

The dark winter that precedes Ragnarok?

Sounds perfect.

>>28189064

>>
>>28189083

According to Wikipedia:

Fimbulvetr is the harsh winter that precedes the end of the world and puts an end to all life on Earth. Fimbulwinter is three successive winters where snow comes in from all directions, without any intervening summer. During this time, there will be innumerable wars and ties of blood will no longer be respected: the next-of-kin will lie together and brothers will kill brothers.[1]

The event is described primarily in the Poetic Edda. In the poem Vafþrúðnismál, Odin poses the question to Vafþrúðnir as to who of mankind will survive the Fimbulwinter. Vafþrúðnir responds that Líf and Lífþrasir will survive and that they will live in the forest of Hoddmímis holt.

This mythology might be related to the extreme weather events of 535–536 which resulted in a notable drop in temperature across northern Europe. There have also been several popular ideas about whether or not this particular piece of mythology has a connection to the climate change that occurred in the Nordic countries at the end of the Nordic Bronze Age dating from about 650 BC. Before this climate change, the Nordic countries were considerably warmer.[2]

In Denmark, Norway, Sweden and other Nordic countries, the term fimbulvinter is still used to refer to an unusually cold and harsh winter.[3]
>>
>>28189116
I thought it would be appropriate.

We learned much from the Ice Demons. How to treat ones deepest enemies, how to treat vengeance as a cold thing, and how to fight in conditions that sane men abhor.

We are clan Fimbulvetr, and we have come to Dragon Pass.

So there's good news and bad news.

The good news is that most of our ring members have Excellents in their primary attribute.

Looking closer, we could actually staff a ring reasonably well with whippersnappers. We've got a HUGE number of Elmal worshippers, one of whom is our best magic user.

Here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to pack the ring according to the wishes of the gentlemen. Tell me what you guys want:

A focus on the best stats above all else?
A focus on the best synergy, even if it's not quite optimal? (I recommend this)
Largest life expectancy?
Favorite gods?
Male/female balance?

We've also got an Uroxi on the ring, but a young Vingan and another Humakt worshipper are almost as good at stabbing things. Our best combatant is the Elmalite on the far right of the current ring.

Remember: No raiding in Sea or Earth, Fire is the traditional raiding time, we CAN raid in Dark season (which most clans cannot do) and Storm is unpredictable.

I suggest either hiring more weaponthanes, scouting the tula, appointing crafters or building a watchtower.

From the map, our feuding partners are on the other side of the Quivinilands. That will make opening hostile negotiations difficult, since we'll have to pay tolls on the way to visit.

It's now Fire season, prime time for raiding. We, being trained in the way of showing Winter the door, can raid during Dark season, so we might want to do other things.

We have two enemy clans, the Greydogs and the Anmangarn. The dogfuckers are a peaceful clan, while the Anmangarn are known for raiding.

The Greydogs are actually pretty close by, while the other guys are way over on the other side of the pass.

We can:

Raid (give a suggestion)

Sacrifice to a god (pick which god)
Try to set up a trade route
Built a fortification
Send out people to try and buy treasure
Send out people on a diplomatic mission

Unfortunately they saw us coming from a mile away. What are the battleplans? Choose:
--Whether we sacrifice (and who to),
--What the objective of the raid is,
--What our tactics are

Quick note: I forgot to bring along our auxiliaries, so we're fighting without healers this time. I'll make a point of bringing ten or so with us on future raids.

At which point they started making allies for defense and after several more raids I realized I was almost bankrupt on the cow front.

It's now Storm season, Dark season's less assholish younger brother. We can do anything, but expeditions that leave our tula have a chance of failure.

They didn't see it coming. Do it again, or sacrifice for Fyrdwomen?
>>
>>28200558
Oh god fyrdwomen.

Get it.

Get it nao. (if we're lucky)

A question that will have to wait. Our trickster met some bandits on the road.

He's Good in all stats, save Excellent Bargaining.
>>
>>28200590
Excellent in Bargaining?

not much of a choice then is it?

He can do te bard thing (being diplomatic, not impregnating all the bandits)
>>
>>28200590
Bargain.

If we're lucky he'll end up robbing THEM.

Sacrificed for Silvertongue. Also we have an extra point of clan magic; the ancestors liked us hitting the Greydogs in Dark season.

At a certain combat skill level, it would seem that "Take insane risks to win the battle" or similar options become the best way to deal with things.

Since this session is almost over, are we going to archive?
>>
>>28201345
That's normal for KoDP threads, sadly.
>>
>>28201386
Fuck, it's gone, along with the save file. The game crashed as I was saving and now it's corrupt. Thankfully I have a backup I made from the start of the year, and this thread here. Here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to race us back to the middle of Storm, taking all the same actions. Random events will be dealt with at my discretion, or if they're the same ones, the same way as they were in the thread. I'll post the highlights.

>>28201370
Already archived it.
>>
>>28201643

Alright, lets do this.
>>
>>28201660
HAH! I forgot that I had a second save game directory for KoDP. Turns out I'd saved my games there.

Please wind time back to here: >>28200749

I sacrificed for Silvertongue again, met the ducks and it is now the second half of Storm.

Before. The crash lost us a single event period, in which we picked up Silvertongue, met the ducks and got hit by trolls.

Just now, I picked up Silvertongue, met the ducks, and the trolls stayed the fuck out. Guess they knew what Barathos would do to them.

And then Orlgard came back with three more weaponthanes.
>>
>>28202081

Excellent. Looks like we're set for a good year so far. Now all that remains is to allocate magic and read the omens.

Thus ends our second year in Dragon Pass. Our tribe saw great success these past two years, and with our new understanding of the gods and our new defenses I am certain that this next year will be yet better.

Page ten. I'll be back tomorrow with another round with the Fimbulvetr. I'll announce when the thread goes up in the QTG at least, and on the twitter for my other handle: WatashiwaOnline.

Thanks for participating everyone.
