I am Monique Gilbeault, a man of style and grace. Though I am my father's third son and thus have no claim to anything save the family name, I am the most accomplished of my father's children.

The only one of us to have truly inherited the skills of my great grandfather, the reknowned duelist Marquise Gilbeault, I have managed to achieve the rank of Captain of the Border Guard of my home country of Granache through naught save my own abilities.

I also placed second in His Majesty's Royal Swordsmanship Tournament, though I lost in the final round because that whoreson Reinhold shattered the blade that I inherited from my great-grandfather on his deathbed... I have yet to pay him back for that disgrace.

But as of late, things have been rather quiet. After I was lucky enough to be able to personally escort the lovely Princess Luciana of the neighboring Kingdom of Marconetti across the border, nothing of particular note has happened in my dull life.

When I went to meet Father this morning, he gave me his invitation to Prince Emilio's birthday party in Marconetti. Though I'm pleased to have an opportunity to mingle with nobles of another country, I do wish that he'd have given me more than a few hours' notice...

...but I shall put that out of my mind for now, as it's time to have breakfast with my family for what I suppose will be the last time before I get back from Marconetti.
>>
As I have come to trust your judgement over the past month or so, I shall defer to your decisions as to which choices I should make in my daily life.

However, I will ignore any such suggestions that would go against my gentlemanly code of conduct or otherwise cause me undue stress.

You have guided me this far, however, and I wish for you to continue to lend me your wisdom.

>"What crawled up your ass and died, Monique?" Marcel says, grinning.
>"Marcel!" Mother shouts. "That is no way to speak at the table!"

I'm tempted to give him a piece of my mind, but you are right. I'll just ignore it.

"Sorry Mom, I was just wondering why my pretty little sister's in such a bad mood," Marcel says.
"Come now, Marcel..." my sister-in-law Michiko says, placing a hand on Marcel's shoulder.
"Oh yeah, it's probably because he's still sore about letting that nobody ruin our great-grandfather's sword."

"Marcel!" Mother shouts, angered at his constantly bringing up my greatest shame.
"What, he claims to be a man so he should be able to face losses!" Marcel says, waving his hand dismissively. "He even went on that training journey for like a month afterwards!"

An interesting spell effect occured to me and I wanted to see if it was possible:

empowering reinhold's sword to literally cut through scrip manifestations (not spells, the script that pops up before the spells). Cut through it and break the spell before it even can go off, possibly forcibly breaking the caster's train of thought too given the way it acts as a manifestation of though
>>
>>28187902
There's nothing to suggest that is possible, if it was, don't you think Sylvie would have used that more than once against Niklaus?

If we want to do counter-spells, we're better off learning that clay-throwing technique so we can just throw mud into the mouths of our enemies so they can't chant the spell.
>>
>>28187902
You can break a caster's train of thought, but you can't break Script itself.
>>
>>28187902
Script is pretty much concentration... so would our sword make a really annoying noise?
>>
>>28187917
I meant as one of those mindset specific effects "this sword can cut ANYTHING"

Or possibly "learning how to sword makes the bad touches stop"

One of my favorite books I read as a child contained such an item.
If I recall correctly the sheath was designed to first, be used carefully; obviously. And to catch the guard of the hilt and then lock the blade still within the sheath from the hilt.
Less mechanically viable with something bigger than a knife but whatever.

Yes, I -am- better than that. I'll let him have his fun for now, but I WILL embarass him in front of his wife if he keeps up this foolishness. A man can only take so much, after all.

"You are right about the reason why I am in a bit of a foul mood, brother," I say to him. "Princess Marianne is close friends with Prince Emilio's elder sister, so there's a fairly good chance that she'll be in attendance. And if she's there, that worthless fool is sure to follow," I say, sighing.
"Oh?" My brother says, raising an eyebrow in surprise. "Haha, so you really are afraid to see that guy again..."
"Not at all," I interject.
"Now I'm starting to want to tag along, if only to see you get another sword broken when you lose your shit and challenge him to a duel," Marcel taunts.

...that's it, I've had enough of his insults.

"Considering that you think so poorly of my skills with the sword, I suppose you wouldn't mind if I challenged -you- to a duel?" I say as I get up from my seat. "Then I'll be able to show your wife that at least one of our father's children has some actual worth as a man."

My little jab seems to have hit a nerve, as Marcel's face becomes flushed with anger.

"You little shit, how about we go outside and and have a go barehanded right now. A REAL man doesn't need to hide behind pointy sticks and fancy armor, you pansy-ass," Marcel says, rolling up his sleeves as he stands up.

"Yes, you have a point..." I say under my breath as I return to my seat.
"Talking to yourself again, you nutcase?" Marcel taunts. "I see that you're too much of a pussy to actually fight it out like a man after all," he says with a smirk as Michiko pulls him back into his chair.
"I don't want to hear about what a man should or should not do from you of all people," I say, running a hand through my hair dismissively. "a man whose singular accomplishment in life was somehow convincing this beautiful lady to marry you. And you even managed to fail at that, seeing as how you've yet to produce a single child after all these years. So don't talk to me about such matters, you have no right."

Yes.

Oh yes.

That did it.

I relax in my chair, folding my hands on the table while showing Marcel my best smirk. But my brother does not share in my amusement, doing his best to get back up and (attempt to) throttle me as his poor wife does her best to hold him down.

"HOW DARE YOU, YOU LITTLE BITCH! LET ME GO, I'M GONNA BEAT HIM DOWN LIKE I USED TO WHEN WE WERE LITTLE!" Marcel screams as he struggles to escape Michiko's grip.
"No, Marcel!" Michiko shouts. "Please, just calm down..."

As I enjoy this little outburst, I notice footsteps approaching. But they're not Father's methodical pace, but rather the haphazard steps of...

"Matthias, stop your brother!" Mother shouts as my brother Matthieu enters the dining room.
"Damn, you guys are at it again?" Matthias grumbles as he wipes the sleep out of his eyes.

Yes, ending fights is pretty much the only thing that Matthias is good at. And i would be bad if I upset Mother any further...

"owowowowowowowowowowow cut it out dammit I'll stop" Marcel shouts.
"I mean it," he sighs. "Every freaking day you start shit with Monique and then he bites right back. You know he's better at trading insults than you are, so you need to quit this shit before you give out poor mother a heartattack."

Matthias then lets go of our eldest brother's neck and takes a seat beside Michiko.

"Sorry that you have to deal with this shit every day, Michi..." Matthias says apologetically.
"No, it's alright... Marcel is just a bit headstrong, that's all," Michiko replies.

"You've always been so good at things like this, Matthias," Mother says warmly. "I'm sure that you would do well in the Border Guard, and your little brother could always put in a word for you..."
"Not interested," Matthias says dismissively. "I'm perfectly happy with my place right here, and it's not like I need the money."
"But still, that's no reason to just sit in your room all day! If you went out and made friends, you might finally meet a nice girl and then get married..."

I then sit back and let my mind wander as Mother berates Matthias about how much she wants grandchildren. I'm not the target of the harassment for a change, so I'd like to enjoy this reprieve for as long as I can.

After a few minutes of Mother's nagging of my brothers, Father finally arrives in the dining room and takes his seat at the head of the table.

"Yes, it's always nice to actually see you while the sun's up," Mother says.
"Aagh, and now you're actually making me -want- to sleep in..." Matthias grumbles.
"Seriously though, you really should quit being such a slackass and actually do something with your life," Marcel chimes in.

As if on cue, the servants arrive with today's breakfast, saving Matthias from any further nagging. Bowing, they present each of us with a plate of waffles before leaving.

Yes, that is true... this will be our last meal together for a week at the very least, so I should probably make the best of it.

"So, Matthias..." I begin, turning to him. "...I don't think I've ever actually bothered to ask, but what exactly is it that you do all day?"
"Hm?" Matthias faces me, his mouth full of waffles. "What, you're interested in my exciting life all of a sudden?"
"I was simply curious, that's all."
"I'm curious as well," Mother says. "You never let me inside your room anymore, after all..."

"Ugh..." Matthias grumbles. "I mostly read, you already knew that. Adventure logs, foreign stories, grimoires, whatever looks interesting. And when I'm not doing that, I'm practicing my ocarina or wandering around or messing with that weird baby tree that Michi got me for my birthday last year."
"You ought to be out there getting to know the other nobles and increasing the fame of the Gilbeault name," Father says, grunting. "You're a strong man, it's a damned waste for you to just sit around inside all day like some kept woman."

"Marcel's the heir, not me," Matthias says as he takes another bite out of his waffles. "I may not get the birthright or the pretty wife or any of that, but I have enough and that's fine with me."
"I swear, if your grandfather could see what you've become..." Father mumbles under hs breath.

"No way, everyone there is crazy," Matthias replies.
"But you had such talent when you were a little boy, I was sure that you would become a great mage..."
"Not interested. At all. Chances are that I'd end up taken in by that Sucher guy and getting turned into some kind of magical abomination," he says as he finishes off a waffle.

"So Monique..." Matthias begins in an attempt to change the subject, "...has Father asked you about that party in Marconetti yet?"
"Yes, he told me earlier this morning," I reply.
"Have fun with that, man. I know you were always into that social climbing stuff, after all."

What was that? Yes, that may be a good idea...

"Actually..." I begin, "...would you like to come along with me?"
"Huh?" Matthias stares at me, completely baffled.
"It would just to see the sights, you don't need to come to the party at all if you don't want to. And you'd get the opportunity to shop around for some foreign goods as well..."
"Oh, yes!" Mother chirps, happily clapping her hands together. "My two youngest, traveling in a foreign land together... it would be a wonderful experience for the both of you!"

"Go ahead and speak your mind," Marcel says to his wife in an encouraging tone. "You are a member of the family, after all. It's as much your business as it is any of ours."

I continue to be surprised to see that fool actually be kind, though Michiko is the only one who he is consistently nice to. It must be out of guilt.

"Well..." Michiko says, nervously fidgeting in her chair. "...I agree with Mother, it would be good for you if you accompanied Monique to the party. It's not healthy for you to stay inside all day, after all."
"You too...?" Matthias sighs. "...alright, I'll THINK about it. Okay? Are you all happy now?"
"You'd better make up your mind quickly," Father says. "Monique's carriage is leaving before noon."
"God damn it..." he mumbles under his breath.

"If I -do- go, it won't be to pick up chicks, dammit..." Matthias grumbles.

As my mother proceeds to nag at Matthias some more, I stand up from my seat and make my way to the door.

True, but I still think we kind of need to branch out more over just this. People are focusing on defense a bit too much, and while that is definitely good for a bodyguard to learn and the right first step, we should be picking up some offensive skill next since we have a utility and defense spell already. Either Clay Spread for subduing or Arctic Blade for damage. Can't just turtle all the time, especially if we need to take down a guy with magical augmentations or defenses.

Actually, Clay Spread is probably in that earth magic book we've got, we should try learning it on our own.

She's an awfully nice and considerate person underneath all that moodiness, that's for sure. I can't help but feel she'll be the best queen ever if she gets over her personal problems.

Also attempted murder with ice magic, bro. She kind of really fucked up there even if it was somewhat understandable.
>>
>>28190697
She didn't cover Reinhold's face so I think (attempted) murder is stretching the facts.

it was more like "bad touch panic button," from a kid whose dad was, like, the OG adventurer.

Mr. Rogers and Reinhold would forgive. I have. It was not a good situation.

Yes, I probably should get some practical usage of this spell in. After all, there's no point in having learned it if I can't use it properly.

Taking a deep breath, I focus my mind on forming the Script that is the basis of all magic.

"Shining lights of the night sky, free me of my shackles so that I may soar to your boundless heights!" I chant as glowing red Script forms a floating mural around me. I then jump off of the top step, and...

"Starlight Wing!" I shout as a pair of ethereal wings form on my back and carry me into the air at the apex of my jump.

I rise into the sky, ending my ascent once I reach a height that's safe to travel at without fear of crashing into a tree. I then gather my bearings, turn in the general direction of the Border Guard's headquarters, and will myself to soar towards it.

Though there are other flight spells of nearly every basic elemental type, I prefer Starlight Wing the most. It's both fast enough to get one where on needs to go in a reasonable time, and offers enough control to allow for graceful movement.

I am also -quite- fond of the wings that manifest as the spell's primary visual effect, as the angelic image suits me well.

After about ten minutes of travel, I see the large building in which I work approaching. Gradually decreasing my altitude, it's approaching the time to land...

She started strangling him. I'm don't think there was a conscious intent to kill there but she clearly lost control and was heading that way. I've forgiven her as well because it was a giant PTSD panic attack but that was still pretty frownie face worthy at the time.

Mr. Rogers doesn't frownie face at traumatic episodes, PTSD, or flashbacks. Mr. Rogers recognizes the severity of all individuals that have been abused or traumatized and does his best to be understanding, comforting, and nurturing, even if they act out in the throes of 'Nam.

Remembering what I learned, I descend gradually as I get closer to the building.

Lower...

Lower...

Alright, almost there...

BUT MY SPEED HASN'T DECREASED AT ALL.

I desperately do my best to regain control, but in doing so my contentration to hold the spell itself breaks and my wings vanish in an instant. As such, I find myself flying helplessly right into the hard stone wall...

WHUMP

...and I hit the damned thing face first, curse it all. And to make it even worse, I then fall ten feet or so onto the hard, dry ground.

God damn it.

With my entire body aching, I look around to make sure that nobody saw my massive failure to control my own spell...

...and fortunately, there's nobody to be seen. As such, there shall be no damage to my reputation.

Just my pride.

And -you- better not start laughing either, this is far too painful to be funny.

You definitely need to practice a bit more. You wouldn't want to hit *that whoreson*'s sword like that, would you?

If you know a healing spell, cast it now, then go find whoever's in charge to transfer your agenda onto him. Let him know of the burden of responsibility that lies on him while you're aware. He or she might be poor substitute, but he or she will have to do.

Yes, those are all good suggestions... and I do know a few healing spells, as they were among the first things that Mother taught me when I was younger.

After doing a quick once-over to make sure that nothing's broken, I get to the first step.

"Gentle wind, bring rest to this weary traveler," I chant. "Refresh."

As a cool breeze blows over me, my aching body is relieved quite a bit. With that out of the way, I pull out the pocket mirror that I keep on my person at all times and check on my appearance.

UGH.

Dirt and twigs are in my hair, and there is blood smeared on my face from what I assume was a bloody nose and busted lip... I quickly produce a handkerchief and wet it down using Aqua Suspend, then wipe my face off.

After that's done with, I take a few minutes to return my hair to a presentable state and then make my way inside the building. Making my way to the main office, I nod to the countless guardsmen who salute as their superior officer walks past.

As I enter the main office, I'm met with the ever-sullen form of my second-in-command, a middle-aged man with graying hair named Rolf Strelow.
