You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Th trip to Marconetti was pretty eventful. Sir Gregory and Nicolette fought and killed a behemoth, Sylvie punched a bear to death, and you got to act as bait in order to keep the noncombatants relatively safe.

Fortuntely, that was about it as far as interruptions went. After all of that, you eventually made it to your destination and now you're waiting to be shown to your room.

Or something.

Oh yeah, Monique is also here.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

As you eyes meet with Monique's, you fight the urge to turn away and pretend that you didn't see him at all and instead smile and nod. After all, it's like the least offensive way you know of to greet someone.

Unfortunately, Monique doesn't seem to take this all that well, sneering before finally managing to force a blank expression and nodding back to you.

Great, you actually got through that without incident!

...or not.

Damn it, he's coming over here.

"Good afternoon, Your Majesty. Princess. I'd never expected to meet you here so soon after my arrival," Monique says with a deep bow.
"And good afternoon to you too... er..." the King replies, unsure as to who exactly this jackass is supposed to be.
"-This- is Monique Gilbeault," Princess Marianne says derisively.

"Ah, Princess! I am truly touched that you actually deigned to remember one as lowly as myself!" Monique says, bowing again.
"It's kind of hard to forget someone like you, regardless of how much everyone would like to," Nicolette replies.
"Ah, Captain Nicolette. I hadn't noticed you sta-"

Monique seems to have been about to say something snide, but cuts himself off when he notices Sir Gregory GLARING at him intently.

"E- er, you look so lovely today that I didn't recognize you standing there," Monique quickly corrects himself.
"So, er, should I know you from somewhere...?" the King asks.

Punch Guards Quest is back!
>>
>>28241709

>leave it to someone else

As chummy as we are with the princess, we have no place in this conversation. Let him flounder or succeed on his own.
>>
>>28241751
>Punch Gilbeault Quest
Fixed that for ya.
>>
>>28241709

Remember, we don't remember anything about these past few threads.
>>
>>28241709

>>
>>28241709

>>introduce him yourself

Do it. The King himself is asking after all.
>>
>>28241761
But what if we need to punch someone in the future - someone who isn't a Gilbeault or a guard?

Can it be Punch Guys Quest (since we'd never hit a lady)?
>>
>>28241709
>leave it to someone else

Eh. Acceptable.
>>

>>

"This is Monique Gilbeault, captain of your border guard - as well as a distinguished duelist."

Are we doing a be-nice-to-monique thing, or do we still hate him?
>>
>>28241709
>introduce him yourself
we antaginize him by NOT antaginze him.
>>
>>28241815
We could introduce him as that guy we punched the other day.
>>
>>28241816
Do we have any reason not to still hate him. Reinhold doesn't know about the last 3 threads.

As far as I'm concerned, there isn't any in-character reason to be nice to him, just to avoid conflict with him.
>>
>>28241816

This sounds good.

Be polite to him if the Ant keeps up its good behaviour. Nothing more.
>>
>>28241841
But we could do that by not introducing him too, even better since whoever is likely to introduce him won't be nice like us.
>>
>>28241816
be COMPLETELY nice to him. yet keep smirking at him when the king and princess are not looking.
>>
>>28241709
>>leave it to someone else
If past experience is anything to go by, being introduced as the runner up isn't going to make him go away any quicker.
>>
>>28241816
We don't hate him, we dislike him. Still, no need to turn the trip sour for anyone, so at least try to be pleasant.

I'd add "He reached the finals in the last Tourney."
>>
>>28241816
Perhaps we could just shorten it to "Monique Bilbeault. From the Sword fighting tournament."
>>
>>28241816
>"This is Monique Gilbeault, captain of your border guard - as well as a distinguished duelist."
Seems reasonable enough though repeating his name doesn't seem necessary.

Monique as a character makes me so sad. He only wants to be nice to people, but he's so socially retarded he just makes everybody hate him.

>>
>>28241971

>>
>>28241953
It'd probably make him paranoid Reinhold was planning something too.
>>
>>28241971
He's not socially retarded. He's egotistical and too concerned with his reputation and climbing the social ladder.

The only person outside of his family that he's even tried to be nice to so far is the princess and that's only because she's a princess and thus a good person to suck up to get ahead since she can marry whoever she wants.

>>
>>28242013
Were you asleep during that whole Monique POV thing? He thinks he's being a kind, refined gentleman, but he doesn't know how to actually speak like one. Since he can't articulate his thoughts, people get pissed at him. Since people get pissed at him because of how socially retarded he is, he thinks nobody appreciates his refined gentleman...ness, so he starts to actually act like a dick.

The obsessed with status thing was also completely dismissed by the POV thing, never once did he mention wanting to increase his status. He brown-noses the nobility because that's how nobility works in his head.
>>
>>28242013
i agree, but even still. there maybe hope for someone like him to be redeemed into a decent person.
>>
>>28242013
And he was nice to his subordinates. Not buddy buddy but he was polite to them. And Lucindia though for the same reasons as Marie.
But then we haven;t seen him interact at all with that many other people.
>>
>>28242087
The only times he's been nice so far are for selfish reasons or posturing. Not out of legit sincerity.
>>
>>28242087
Also he hears voices. That shit seems to be a sign of weirdness to come IMO
>>
>>28242087
While he does have some redeeming qualities, I think you're giving him way more credit than he deserves.
>>
>>28242113
He is nice to people who are:
>above him on the social ladder
>don't challenge him
As long as you're one or both of those he's perfectly fine.
>>
>>28242239
I'm not so sure. Most of the people above him don't particuarly care for him either.

Moniques interpretation of "nice" could use some work.
>>
>>28242087
>>28242013
I would actually say you're both right. He has this image of himself as a refined gentleman because of his ego and when you combine that with his lack of sincerity it leads to one socially retarded guy who isn't self-aware enough to know what he's doing wrong.
>>
I'm half expecting the king to, at some point, lean in real close to Monique and say, where no one else can hear, something to the effect of "Why do you act like such an insufferable brat, boy?"
>>
>>28242361
He does seem like the kind of guy who has no patience for bullshit but I think he'd do something like that much more casually and openly.
>>
"Back in the tourname-" you begin, but are cut off by the Princess.
"He's Monique Gilbeault, the captain of our Border Guard," Marianne says. "And he was defeated in the final round of the swordsmanship tournament."

You notice Monique's eye twitch slightly during the end of that description, but he manages to keep his cool.

"Ohhhh, you're the one who Reinhold here..." Thierri exclaims, finally getting it. "That fight was really nostalgic... shame about your sword, though."
"Yes, it truly was," Monique replies, cutting you a sharp glance.
"And I suppose it's partly thanks to you that my Marianne got to make an actual new friend..." he says, patting you on the shoulder. "So, what brings you here?"

"My brother and I are here to attend Prince Emilio's birthday celebration," Monique says. "Pardon me, I'll try and get his attention..."

Monique then turns around to try and get the attention of someone further in front of you, but it's to no avail.

"Ugh..." Monique sighs. "I guess he's off in his own little world... hopefully I'll be able to introduce him to you later."
"If he's your brother, he must be an interesting character..." the King replies with a chuckle.
"Heh. Yes, I can't deny that."

Before the conversation can progress any further, you notice a guard making his way to your party.

"King Thierri of Granache?" he calls out.
"That would be me, yes," Thierri replies.
"I apologze on behalf of King Celestino for having you wait here... please follow me."
"Great, we don't have to wait in line any more," Sir Gregory mumbles. "I was wondering what the hell Celestino was doing..."

Saying nothing, you turn around and follow the others out of the crowded corridor and through a long passageway, finally stopping in a large room with several chairs and couches.

"Please wait here, the King shall greet you shortly," the guard says with a bow as he stops beside the door.
"Thanks for your assistance," Thierri replies.
"Yeah, I appreciate not having to stand around in that noisy corridor," Sir Gregory chimes in.
"...you're-" the guard stares at Sir Gregory for a few seconds before catching himself. "Yes, well I apologize for the mixup. IT shouldn't be long now."

The guard then exits the room, leaving the seven of you to your own devices.

"Hope we don't have to wait too long..." Nicolette says as she finds a nearby couch and takes a seat.
"At least we don't have to stand up anymore," Sylvie says as she takes a seat beside Nicolette.

"Considering who we are, I'd have thought Celestino would have had enough forethought to have pulled us from the general waiting line once we got here," sir Gregory says with a sigh.
"Ah, quit being so gloomy," Thierri says as he slaps Sir Gregory on the back. "We're finally here, we might as well enjoy ourselves!"
"Whatever, I'm only here because you forced me..." Sir Gregory mumbles as he plops down in a nearby chair, Thierri taking an adjacent seat.

"Marianne, aren't you going to sit down too?" you ask.
"No, I've been sitting for far too long as it is," the Princess replies. "I'd like to stretch my legs for at least a little while," she says as she begins pacing around the room.

You look around, and everyone seems to have found something to occupy themselves with aside from you. As you wonder what you should do while you wait...

It's not like a royal palace is a rabbit's natural habitat or anything; the fact that it's here means it's either an escaped pet, a refugee from the palace kitchens, or something genuinely suspicious.

All of those situations are probably improved by us getting a hold of it.

We might get some odd looks if we decide to just go bolting across the room after it (and sudden action from us might actually get Gregory into instinctive combat mode, which means we should probably at least warn someone before we go after it), but with all said and done, we've got reasonable justifications for going after it.

...the hell is a rabbit doing inside the castle?

Slightly weirded out by this (and by the fact that nobody else seems to be bothered at all), you quickly reach down and pick the bunny up by the scruff if its neck before it can run off.

"Uh..." you stare at the bunny as it fidgets around in a futile attempt to escape your clutches.

Before you can ask anyone else what's up with this thing, you feel someone tugging on your shirt.

"Hi!" a little girl with bright red hair says, looking up at you.
"Um... hi?" you reply.
"You caught Inaba!" she happily exclaims as she extends her arms out towards you.
"...this rabbit is Inaba?"
"Uhuh! Thanks for catching her for me!"

As you hand the little girl the bunny, she shows you a warm smile.

"Thanks, Mr. Swordie!" she says as she hugs her pet bunny.
"Uh, no problem?" you reply.
"Papa says that boys are scary, but swordies are always really nice! Like Karel and Mr. Takamaru and Uncle Guillaume and Uncle..." her eyes grow wide as she looks over to where everyone is sitting. "UNCLE GREGORY!!!!!"

Heh, this is cute... having nothing better to do, you follow her over to where the others are sitting. As Sir Gregory quickly notices the little girl approaching, a wide smile forms on his face.

"Elena!" he shouts. "Oh wow, you've gotten so big since the last time I've seen you!"
"Yup, Papa says that I'm growing like a weed!" the little girl, apparently named "Elena" says happily. "Look, I got a bunny!"
"And it's a cute bunny too," he replies as he tussles Elena's hair.
"She ran away but then, um..." she looks around for a few seconds before noticing that you're standing right behind her. "...this swordie here caught her for me! He's really nice, just like you!"
"Is that so?" Sir Gregory says with a smirk. "You really are popular, Reinhold..."

"...you're Reinhold?" Elena says as she turns to you.
"Yeah, that's my name," you reply.
"Um..." she bows as best she can while still holding on to her pet bunny. "I'm Princess Elena Camellia di Marconetti! Luciana said that that you were really nice!"
"Heh, I guess I'll have to thank her the next time I see her," you reply as you return the bow.

"Hm?" Elena turns to her.
"Nothing... unless you'd like to elaborate?" Marianne says with a smirk as she turns to you.
"No, that's fine..." you reply. not really feeling like bragging about your victory.

"So how is this Karel person faring, seeing as how he has to put up with Emilio all day?" Marianne asks.
"Ehehe... he looks kind of annoyed sometimes because Emilio's really wimpy, but he's really nice too! He even gives me cookies from his Mom's restaurant!" Elena says happily.
"Well, it sounds like he's already made at least one friend in the castle then," Marianne says as she pats Elena on the head.
"He's friends with my brother too, I guess..." she shrugs. "I heard Emilio asking him for tips on how to make girls like him earlier today..."

It proves that she could theoretically be a swordie, but isn't. I bet Elena thinks she could theoretically be a swordie too, but she isn't anyway. Saying "Nicolette's not a swordie, but the reason she isn't is totally not because of gender" is, at best, not a very strong statement.

"You better watch out, Marianne!" Nicolette calls out from the other side of the room, apparently having been listening in on your conversation this entire time.

As Marianne glares at Nicolette, your attention is drawn by the sound of the door opening.

"Elena, there you are!" Luciana shouts as she enters the room. "You know you're not supposed to be running all over the castle at a time like this..."
"Acting the big sister role for once, I see," Marianne says, smiling.
"Oh, Marianne!" she exclaims as she runs up to her best friend and hugs her tightly. "I didn't even know that you guys has arrived, even though I -know- I told the guards to inform me of such..." she mumbles under her breath.

"Anyways, it's wonderful to see everyone again!" she says happily. "I trust Elena wasn't bothering you too much?"

"I don't think that being cute counts as being troublesome," you say as you pat Elena on the head.
"Yeah, Elena's as adorable as ever," Sir Gregory says as he gets up from his chair. "Unlike a certain someone who couldn't even be bothered to stop by and see me while she had the opportunity to do so a few weeks ago..."
"Uncle Gregory?" Luciana says as she turns towards him. "Oh wow, you came too!?"

Forgetting what she was doing before, Luciana rushes in and hugs Sir Gregory tightly.

"The title of 'favorite niece' won't be won back so easily, you know..." Sir Gregory says with a smirk.
"Yup, I'm his favorite now!" Elena teases, sticking her tongue out at her sister.
"Oh yeah?" Luciana says, a sly grin forming on her face. "Well at least I know that I'm still -Nico's- favorite..." she says as she wraps her arms around the still-seated Nicolette. "She promised that she'd become my very own knight, you know..."

Nicolette's face slowly turns bright red as the other girls turn to her and start laughing.

"You know that it's too dangerous for you to risk going out and fighting things like that..." Sylvie replies, sighing.
"That's not what I want to hear from someone who at least got to fight a bear today."

"A... a Lindwurm and a bear... what in the world!?" Luciana gasps. "But you all look fine, so did you escape or...?"
"Me and my old man fought the Lindwurm and I guess Sylvie killed the bear," Nicolette says, shrugging.
"Y- You and Uncle Gregory?" Luciana stares at her.
"Yup. We softened it up for a while and then he stabbed it in the face with a Vajra Spark and killed it."

"So Sylvie killed a bear and you two killed a lesser dragon... did Mr. Reinhold end up fighting off a bandit gang too while all of this was going on?" Luciana says in disbelief as she turns to you.
"No, I just kind of stood there and acted as bait," you reply with a chuckle.

Completely shocked, Princess Luciana looks at the lot of you.

"Wow. Just... wow," Luciana says, letting out a long sigh. "And here I thought that swordsmanship tournament was exciting, but you actually had an entire adventure while on the carriage ride here..."
"It's honestly nothing to be envious of," Marianne replies.
"Even if it was for a few moments, you were living the life that I wish I could have..."

"Still holding those dreams of becoming an adventurer?" Sir Gregory asks. "You know your father wouldn't be too happy to hear that."
"He knows what I want to do, and he knows that I'm too responsible to actually do it," Luciana replies in a melancholic tone.
"Heh, all you need to do is convince Celestino to marry you off to someone who does that kind of thing, and then you'll be free to join in yourself," he says, chuckling. "Well, that or marry a total wimp who you can boss into staying at home while you live it up."

"That's not exactly up to my decision, though..." Luciana sighs. "Anyways, I'll just enjoy what passes for my freedom while I still can."
"Either that or arrange a 'kidnapping,'" Thierri laughs.
"C'mon, don't even joke like that," Sir Gregory says, punching him on the arm.

KNOCK KNOCK

"Excuse me, the King is ready to see you now," a guard calls out from the other side of the door.
"Alright, they'll be right out!" Luciana shouts back. "Well, I guess Father's finally freed up some time for you..."

Stepping aside so the others can pass, you wait until everyone's left the room before following behind them. Having had the same idea as you, Melanie joins you in the back of the group as you all head through several hallways.

"You seem to be enjoying yourself, Gregory," Thierri says.
"Not really," Sir Gregory replies. "You dragged me out here, so I'm going to make the best of it before the inevitable shitstorm."
"You say that, but I saw how happy you were to see little Elena..."
"Yeah, but it's not like I'll be able to have fun acting stupid with her for most of this little trip. You and Celestino are sure to monopolize the vast majority of my time here," he replies with a scowl.

Before long, you all make it to what seems to be a throne room or audience hall or whatever they have in Marconetti. The guard opens the door for you and takes position beside it as you party enters.

The room itself is beautifully decorated, with lavish designs on the walls and expensive-looking carpeting on the floor. Looking in the center of the room, you see an old man with gray hair approaching you.

"Ah, Luciana. I see that you personally brought our guests," he says.
"Of course, Father," Luciana replies.
"Well, I suppose I should thank you for that..." he says as he approaches King Thierri and extends an arm. "Nice seeing you again, old friend."
"Likewise, older friend!" Thierri replies as he gives him a firm handshake.

stepping away from Thierri, the old man looks around at your little group.

"Ah... I see some unfamiliar faces here, so I suppose I should formally introduce myself," he says. "I am Celestino Saella di Marconetti," the father of my dear Luciana here and the King of this nation."

"That's the duty of an older brother, as I'm sure you know."

He then turns to Sylvie, Marianne and Nicolette, a beaming smile on his face.

"The three of you grow even more beautiful every time I see you," Celestino says, smiling warmly. "Especially you, my lovely niece," he says to Nicolette. "You've really come to resemble your mother..."
"...thanks, Uncle Celestino," Nicolette replies, blushing slightly.
"Too bad her personality takes after mine," Sir Gregory remarks.
"Haha, but I bet that's easier on you, Gregory."

Man, I'm beginning to think every single kingdom in the world is based on about a half dozen badass people who can do everything.

Welcome to the von Habsburgs.

Isn't that how most animu worlds work, on a sort of badassery economy.

"And Sylvie, how have your parents been doing?" Celestino asks.
"Th- they're doing well, Your Majesty!" Sylvie squeaks out.
"That's nice to hear, it's a shame that they couldn't attend too."

And finally, he faces Marianne.

"And you, Marianne," he says, bowing slightly. "Luciana's always so happy when your letters arrive, I trust that you've been doing well?"
"Yes, thank you for asking," Marianne replies.
"I know that you've never been too fond of this kind of formal occasion, but I'm sure that Emilio will be elated to see that you actually decided to attend his birthday celebration."

Not having noticed the two of you standing behind the others, Celestino motions for you and Melanie to come to the front.

"And who might these two youngsters be?" Celestino asks.
"Um- I'm Melanie, personal maid to Princess Marianne," Melanie stammers as she does her best to curtsey.
"Ah, you're her confidant... and what about you, young man?"
"I'm Reinhold," you reply. "Princess Marianne's bodyguard."

Hearing your name, Celestino's eyes grow wide with surprise.

"So -you're- Reinhold!" he says as he takes your hand and shakes it firmly. "Luciana's said so much about you, I even had my own little tournament to decide on my son Emilio's bodyguard, you know..." he chuckles. "It's a shame that I couldn't poach you from Thierri here, but I believe that the young man who won our tournament is rather skilled as well."

>how do you respond?
>>
>>28245897
"Yeah, Elena told me about him earlier."

"I hear he bested Takamura. He should be a fine blade in your Majesty's service."
>>
>>28245897
Hopefully, neither of us will have any need to prove ourselves anytime soon.

But dont say it. Lets not give the bored nobles ideas.
>>
>>28245897
I am sure he is your majesty.

"I'm sure he is if he even beat Takamaru"

Was writing up a response then saw this. Works for me.

Don't rat her out.

To be fair, we've never tested Takamura's strength

"If he bested Takamaru, he certainly must be.

I am quite looking forward to meeting him, if I get the chance."
>>
>>28245935
Soon.
>>
>>28245935
I'm sure we will get the chance to before we leave. Maybe even get a shot at the new guy as well depending on how busy he is being the birthday boys guard.

This.

Yeah, "strength", sure.

Calling it night here, since I ended up running way later than I intended.
Next thread is either Tuesday or Wednesday, I haven't decided yet.

If someone could archive this thread on suptg, that would be appreciated.

And as always, thanks for playing!
>>
>>28245964
Thanks arch
>>
>>28245964
Sleep well.
>>
>>28245964
Thanks for the run arch. I am looking forward to spending some time with Elena.
Also the scene where we meet with Citrine in the ball and she learns Marie is in fact princess and we're her bodyguard will be delicious too!
So much anticipation.
>>
>>28245964
Good run as always Arch.
>>28245983
Yes so much coming, it'll be fun.
>>
You an cool bro OP
>>
>>28246048

Okay, I need to ask. You're the only guy(s?) who write that on Foolz. Is this a reference to something or not?
>>
>>28246081
Well, other than someone copying me once this thread, it's pretty much just me. And yes, but it's one of those references where I've been doing it so long I don't remember what it's from.
>>
>>28245964
Thanks for running Archelon!
Rest well dood!
>>
>>28245953
My bet is on the new guy being a villain in disguise.

This quest is lacking antagonists so far.
