Okay, so I'm back with some revamped and revised notes and plot elements, so hopefully this thread will run smoother than the last one! Anyways, let's get this started!

Twitter: https://twitter.com/MercCommand

You wake up to the typical sounds of Elmendorf Field. The humming of aircraft engines and helicopter rotor blades, the rumbling of passing trucks and hummvees, and even the loud THUMPS the aircraft made as they landed on the tarmac. Even with the increased activity due to the Russian invasion of Alaska, you've found it to have become incredibly routine.

Groaning, you check your clock and nearly sputter in surprise. You've literally slept through your alarm and you've got barely twenty minutes to get dressed and report to your daily briefing.

You knew that late night rescue op was going to bite you in the ass.

You manage to get dressed and clean yourself up in ten minutes, making sure you grabbed your jacket before venturing out of your building and into the frigid cold wasteland that was Alaska on a good day. You check your watch again. You could probably make the briefing in ten minutes, but you'd really, REALLY like to get some coffee to start off the day.

>Just stop by the mess hall on the way and grab cup there. You'll just have to bear the fact that it tastes like moldy motor oil.
>Track down your buddy Lucky. He at least knows how to brew some decent coffee.
>You haven't been late to a briefing so far and you don't plan on starting now.

Well, it looks like you'll just have to go without coffee today. Grumbling to yourself, you quickly hustle your way across the base to the building your unit's briefing room is set up in. You quickly and quietly try to slide in without anybody noticing you were last. Fortunately, your fellow pararescuemen were busy finding appropriate seating. Your eyes wander over to the table in the corner, and are not surprised that the coffeepot and donuts that had previously been here had been cannibalized long before you had gotten here.

"Hey! Nice to see you finally show up, Captain Pierce!" You hear Lucky's very familiar voice behind you.

You turn to face one of your fellow Combat Rescue Officers, Henry Luciano. People normally called him "Lucky", though if you really wanted to piss him off you'd call him "Lucy" from time to time. You two endured the hell that was PJ training together, so you were both pretty close, even if you two didn't have a lot of opportunities to work together.

"Yeah, well, I was never a morning guy." You shrug and yawn at the same time. "Any word on what's going on today?"

"Nothing." Lucky shakes his head. "So, either we get a day off..."

The both of you chuckle at that impossibility.

"...or something big is going down."

"Well, nothing we haven't handled before, right?"

"Yeah." Lucky nods, and then frowns slightly. "Hey, so how do you feel about that upcoming transfer?"

"What transfer?" You ask. You don't recall hearing anything about that.

"You don't know?" Lucky blinks. "Sorry, I probably shouldn't mention anything to you, then."

At this point the background chatter in the room suddenly dies down when your wing commander, Colonel Kelsey, marches in, looking grim as ever right before a major briefing.

>Take a seat and get ready to listen.

"Okay men, I'm going to cut straight to the point." Colonel Kelsey clears his throat. "Six hours ago, we received intel that the Russian aerial fleet was sighted in the Bering Sea, which is the operational area for the Kitty Hawk and her battlegroup. With this information in mind, there is an extremely high chance of a major naval engagement."

Kelsey pauses for a moment to gauge his audience's reaction, and then continues.

"You all know what this means. We might have to get called out to pull pilots and crew out of the water, and in the Bering sea, a man can freeze to death in minutes. That's why all available SAR crews are being put on high alert. Half will be on standby in Elmendorf while the other half will be on station near the projected combat zone. You all better get brushed up on your dive and rescue swimming training, and hope to God you don't need to use it." Kelsey then turns his head to face you and Lucky. And to the CROs, your crews and flight shifts have already been assigned. Report to me for your orders. Everybody else is dismissed."

"Man, this sounds heavy." Lucky frowns. "And I don't know about you, but I HATE cold water."

>Ah, suck it up, you big baby.

"But then it'll make me look like one of those douchebag officers who never does anything themselves." Lucky complains.

"Jesus, Lucky, nothing ever satisfies you." You sigh and shake your head. "Anyways, what was this about a "transfer" you were talking about?"

"Um, well..." Lucky frowns. "I've just been hearing people talk, alright? You know how I like to hang out with the witches..."

"You mean hit on them."

"Semantics. Anyways, they've been talking about some of their own getting transferred out of the blue, and they even mentioned your name a couple times. I just sorta figured you knew something about it."

"No, no I do not."

"Pierce! Luciano! We don't have all day here!" You hear Kelsey bark. The both of you immediately snap to attention and march to the front of the room.

Knowing better than to query your commanding officer about shit you're not supposed to know, you just take your orders silently and turn to leave when you're suddenly stopped by Kelsey's voice.

"Captain Pierce, hold up there for just a second." He says. Lucky pauses briefly to see what's going on, but a slight glare from Lucky informs him that this was a private matter and Lucky quickly makes his exit.

"Is there something wrong, sir?" You ask.

"Pierce, I've been keeping track of your operational history, and I know that you're one of the best and most talented CROs we've got, which is why I'm asking you for a favor."

A favor from a Colonel? This was... pretty unusual, but intriguing. You continue standing at attention as you wait for Kelsey to get to the point.

"This isn't supposed to officially happen yet, but I'm assigning a witch to your team. She's a CRO like you, but she's fresh out of training and doesn't have much experience in the field. I was hoping I could assign her to something less risky, but with the way things are going we'll need every resource we can get. Can I trust you with this? I understand if you're not comfortable with this sudden change, and I'll transfer her to another team if you refuse."

"In a way, yes." Kelsey says a but vaguely. "First things first, her name is Rachel Kelsey, my niece."

He must have noticed your eyes widen because he quickly continues.

"I'm not asking for special treatment just because she's related to me. She knew the risks when she signed on. I just want you to keep an eye on her. Show the ropes, make sure she doesn't do anything foolish. Can you do that?"

"Yes sir." You nod. "I'll do my best."

"Good to hear, Captain." Kelsey finally cracks a tiny smile and hands you a sealed folder, presumably containing your orders. "Now get going. We've got a busy day today."

After a quick salute, you exit the briefing room, opening the folder and reading your orders as you go. Apparently, you're set to start off on standby in Elmendorf, which is a small relief since that mean you'd get some more prep time. Reading further, you see you're being assigned to another ad hoc unit. Two helos from the 210th Rescue Squadron, who were PJs like you, and two helos from the Coast Guard. While you had nothing but respect for your fellow servicemen in the "Fifth Branch" of the armed forces, you knew a lot of other CROs who looked down on them for not being part of a "proper" military branch.

Well, at least they were Alaskan Coast Guard. They at least knew what they were doing up here.

>>
>>28313628
You suppose it's best to track down this Rachel Kelsey first. After all, she was basically being assigned as your direct subordinate, right? You figure the best way to find a witch was to, well, ask the other witches on base. On that note, you begin to drift over to the area of the base where the witches tended to congregate when not in the air. You pass by a couple of Navy and Army witches and give them respectful nods as you pass, carefully reminding yourself not to let your eyes visibly wander down below their exposed waistlines. A couple of them return the nod, while a couple others quietly whisper something to their friends and snicker like schoolgirls.

Witches. Sometimes you just didn't get them.

Eventually, you find your what you were looking for: a rather large gathering of Air Force witches, no doubt having just finished their own morning briefing session. You see that most of them were Lieutenants or Captains like you, though you do see a couple Majors and at least one Colonel in the mix.

"Ah, ladies, can I have a moment of your time please?" You say as politely and neutrally as you could.

In one almost synchronized motion, almost a dozen pair of eyes belonging to teenaged girls turn in your direction and you begin to regret not bringing in some backup for this particular op. You heard some particularly distressing horror stories of base personnel getting kidnapped or carried off into the night by witches ever since witches were integrated into the armed forces.

But those were just stories... right?

"Sure, what do ya need to know?" One of the captains steps forward, her striped cat ears twitching.

"Do any of you happen know a Rachel Kelsey, and where I can find her?" You ask.

"Oh, Red? She's still in the briefing room." The young Captain points to the door behind her. She then leans in uncomfortably close to you and whispers, "Hey, so, just between use, what's this all about? Are you two dating or something?"

"Just business." You say flatly.

"Awwww." The Captain pouts at being robbed of her chance at some good gossip. "Well, good luck, then."

You nod and walk past the the gathered witches, unconsciously keeping a close eye on them as you pass. Once you reach the briefing room door, you can hear a lot of hurried whispering. Looks like gossip was one of the few weapons that could still work without ammo.

You enter the briefing room and see that there are only two witches left. One was a relatively young, red headed witch who was apparently being chewed out by a Colonel. You were guessing that the red head was Rachel, or "Red" as the witches outside called her.

It looks like neither witch has noticed your entry.

You decide to just stay back and wait for them to finish. If you had learned anything of note, it was not to mess with a Colonel, especially if she was angry and ESPECIALLY if she could crush you skull with her bare hands, which you assume is something witches were capable of.

However, without warning, Rachel simply storms out the room's back door, leaving you in a bit of bind. The Colonel stays back, obviously debating whether to let Rachel go or to follow her.

You decide to break you silence and move forward to ask the Colonel what happened. However, as you draw closer, you start noticing odd little details, such as how the Colonel was wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, despite being an Air Force aviator. You had a dreadful feeling that you weren't exactly going to be having a normal conversation. However, you were already committed so you speak up.

"Sorry for interrupting ma'am, but what was that all about?" You ask innocently.

The Colonel, a Colonel MacLeod from what you can see on her nametag, whips around to face you.

"You don't happen to be Captain Pierce, do you?" She scowls.

"Um, that's me, ma'am." You blink, wondering how she knew your name.

"I don't know what you're trying to pull here, Captain." The Colonel strides forward and jabs you in the chest with her finger. "But YOU do NOT have the authority to pull one of MY witches for whatever it is the hell you do!"

"Well, ma'am." You respond, trying to remain as calm and civil as you could. Nothing pissed you off like unbased accusations like that. You shift a bit to make sure that the Colonel sees the Pararescue patch proudly displayed on your shoulder and continue. "Those aren't my orders. If you have a problem with them, you'll have to take it up with Colonel Kelsey of the Special Operations Rescue Group."

The Colonel stares at you long and hard for several seconds, which starts to make you a bit uncomfortable. Was she angry at your or coming on to you? You honestly had no idea with women, much less witches in general.

"You remind me of someone." She frowns. "Some Navy squid who also really pissed me off the moment I saw him."

"Ma'am, if you have nothing else to say I would like to take my leave. My unit is high alert right now."

"Fine. Go." The Colonel waves you off. "But if I catch you snooping around in this building again I will kick your ass so hard Stalin himself will hear the impact! Is that clear?"

"Crystal." You mumble before quickly making your escape.

"A-are you Captain Pierce?"

You hear a meek little voice mumble as you exit the briefing room. You turn to see that red headed witch's face peeking out from behind a support column.

"Yeah, that's me." You nod. "I take it you're Rachel Kelsey?"

"L-lieutenant Rachel Kelsey r-reporting!" Rachel salutes from behind the column. "But everybody j-just calls me Red."

"Well come on, let's get out of here before Colonel Macleod catches the both of us together." You say.

"R-right!" Rachel nods before following you out.

As you both make your way to the helipad, you decide now was a good time to get some answers out of her.

"So, Red, is it okay if I call you Red, too?" You ask. You've learned that calling people by their accepted nicknames tended make them feel more comfortable.

Red just silently nods.

"Why exactly did you join the PJs?" You ask.

"Well..." Red pauses for a second. "I guess I just had something to prove. Back in the Academy, all my friends were arguing over what assignment was the best. I know a couple of them joined up with the SEALs, one of them is with the Green Berets, and at least one is in the Deltas..."

You blanch as she lists off the various services her friends were serving in. You're almost too terrified to imagine the kind of company Red keeps.

"So I asked my matron what she thought about it, and she said the Pararescue Jumpers beat them all because they're the ones who get sent in the save the Special Forces when they get in trouble." Red finishes. "Is... is that okay with you?"

"Red, let's make one thing clear." You stop to face her, giving her the most serious look you can manage. "Our job is to save lives, not boast about it. If there's going to be any boasting, it's going to be coming from the guys whose asses we're pulling out of the fire. Got it?"

"Yes sir." Red nods.

"Good, now since we're on standby, that means we could be ordered to scramble at any time. You should let the ground crews know to move your striker-"

"I don't have a striker." Red says flatly.

"What?" You blink. You've never heard of a witch without a striker. "You're joking, right?"

"Nope." Red shakes her head. "I can't perform rescue ops or first aid very well with jet engines strapped onto my legs."

Well, Red certainly did have a point, especially considering there would be situations where their rescue target would be trapped somewhere strikers couldn't reach. Then again, you suspect there might be something more to it.

"And..." Red blushes a bit. "I never liked the idea of walking around base, much less a battlefield, in my underwear."

Ah.

"Okay, I guess this would make things simple, then." You say. "You'd be using the same gear as us, then. How did you do in your rescue swimming course?"

"Pretty well."

"Good, then suit up." You say.

You lead Red to the building where the rescue group had set up as their headquarters and take her to the ready room, where all the gear was stored. The armorer begins to fit Red for the gear she would need, while you proceed to gear up yourself.

"So Red, are you having any problem with your gear?" You ask.

"Um... just a bit." Red mutters. "I need a bit of help."

"With what?"

"The z-zipper." Red says, pointing to her back.

And that's when you realizing you're staring. Right. Girl. Wetsuit.

You get the feeling things were going to be very awkward in the future. Ignoring the amused smirk of the armorer, you help zip up Red's wetsuit, causing her to squeak a bit when the outfit finally tightens up. You then see an odd little wrist mounted device stashed along with her clothes.

"Hey, what's that?" You ask. "Doesn't look standard issue."

"S-special issue, in fact." Red says as she snaps the the device around her wrist like a bracelet. "It's a portable magic focus. Let's me amplify my powers and shields without a striker, but it's not as efficient."

"Huh, really." You nod. You could think of countless ways a witch shield could be useful to you. "What exactly is your power?"

"Healwitch, of course." Red smiles. "I basically breezed through the first aid courses."

"Shit, that's us!" You scowl, quickly grabbing the rest of your gear. "Come on, Red!"

"J-just a second!" Red fumbles into place right behind you.

Fortunately, the helos aren't too far, and you get there with thirty seconds to spare.

"Good to see you made it on time!" One of the PJ pilots, Rusty, chortles as you hustle over.

"Yeah, well, I had a long morning." You sigh. "What's the sitrep?"

"Beats me." Rusty shrugs. "Navy called it in just now. They need every SAR bird they can get."

Oh, that didn't sound good at all. You take a quick glance at your flight. Just like your orders stated, you see two grey Pave Hawks and two orange and white Jay Hawks sitting on the tarmac ready to go.

"Come on Red, let's go fraternize with our fine brothers in the Alaskan Coast Guard." You say, striding toward the pair of Jay Hawks.

"Red, one thing you need to learn as a CRO is that you'll have to handle lots of joint ops involving other service branches." You say. "Too many rescue ops in the past ended badly because of bad coordination. That's why CROs exist."

"Right." Red nods, making sure her portable focus is fitted on tight. You hope that it's waterproof.

"Hah, it's nothing! Maybe we can show you guys a thing or two!" Morris laughs. "Okay Rick, lets get this can in the air!"

"Roger that." The pilot nods and powers up the engines.

One by one, the four helos lift off. Getting to the Bering Strait from Elmendorf was a fairly long ride, especially considering you had to skirt around Russian air defenses. However, as you continue on, you see a small flotilla of ships beneath you.

"Is that the fleet?" Red asks.

"No." You shake your head. "That's the USS Essex and her escorts. They're not a part of Kitty Hawk's battlegroup."

However, what does unnerve you is that the Essex and her escorts were steaming at full speed in the same direction in you were, and following close behind the Essex was the USNS Mercy, one of the Navy's hospital ships. You then see other SAR birds coming from the opposite direction landing on both ships either to refuel or offload wounded.

"Damn, that looks bad." You breathe.

"Yeah, I've never seen anything like it, either." Morris frowns.

"...what?" You feel a pit form in your stomach. "What do you mean she's gone?"

"GONE. As in, completely sunk. We're doing everything we can but we're STILL pulling people out of the water. We're completely swamped!"

"We're about to come into visual range."

You stick your head out the side of the helo and you can already see it. SAR birds hovering over the water as they desperately try to winch up as many survivors as they could. Wreckage, debris, giant oils slicks, and other evidence of a massive ship sinking were scattered all over the area.

You decide to handle this yourself, at least to show Red how it was done. You tell Morris to direct the pilot to hover over a clear patch of water, as low as he safely could manage. The helo then drops low enough for you to feel the ocean spray of the water being kicked up by the downwash of the helo's rotors. Morris then gives you a thumbs up.

"Watch and learn, Red." You say as you pull your snorkel over you face. You tuck your arms close to your chest and push off, remaining straight as a rail as you drop and effortlessly plunging through the surface of the water. Immediately, you can feel the countless pinpricks against your skin as the ice cold water of the Bering Sea ate away at you. Ignoring the cold, you swim your way over to the nearest life raft.

"Boy are you a sight for sore eyes!" One of the survivors breathe a sigh of relief as you grab onto the side of his raft.

Triage, the rafts can be used to hold the less wounded until the Essex and Mercy arrive.

They are on a raft, they aren't going to freeze to death in minutes. We can give their coordinates to Iceberg Four anyway.
>>
>>28317426
"Hey, do you have wounded?" You ask. "Rescue ships are inbound, but wounded are priority for evac!"

"Y-yeah." The survivor nods and points to the other rafts. "We're all find here, but I'm pretty sure the other rafts have guys that were badly hit.

After a quick examination, you deduce that there were four serious cases that were priority evac. One had some serious microwave burns, no doubt due to getting grazed by a maser or something. You knew these wounds were all too common during the Martian War, and most first aid classes still taught how to treat them.

Two more sailors were winched up with conventional, but still severe burns.

The fourth one, though, was proving to be a bit of a problem. Not only was he badly burned, but he had a lot of shrapnel wounds too. His buddies did their best to try and patch him up, but he was still in bad shape. You're not sure if he'd survive getting winched up to the helo.

>Leave him in the raft. Hopefully he could hold on until the relief fleet arrives.
>Try and winch him up anyways.

"Red, I need you down here." You say in your radio as you wave at the helo hovering above you. You see Red nod in response and pull her goggles and snorkel down over her face. The helo shifts to the side to give Red some clearance and she drops off the side, mimicking your dive motion as she effortlessly slides into the water. Well, you guess she wasn't lying about acing the rescue swimming course.

"S-s-so what do you n-need?" Red asks she swims up to you, her chattering teeth serving to worsen her already habitual stutter.

You point to the wounded man.

>I need you to heal this guy with everything you've got.

"Just enough to stabilize him." You say as you fight the urge to shiver. Even with the insulated wetsuit, that only increases your tolerance of the cold Alaskan waters by a few more minutes. You'd have to get pulled out soon as well. "Can you do it?"

"Of course." Red nods and closes her eyes, keeping on hand clamped firmly on the raft and the other hovering over the wounded sailor. A soft, golden glow begins to emanating from her hand.

"Holy shit, she's a witch?!" One of the other sailors exclaims.

"Yeah, she is." You nod.

"Where are her strikers?"

"That's what I asked!"

"Guys! Shush!" Red snaps at you both before pulling her hand back. "Okay, that should have been enough to stop the bleeding."

>Okay, I think he'll be fine staying in the raft.

You and Red both look up, with a bit of pride, as the casualty is winched up to the waiting Jay Hawk.

"Hey, Cap, I see more life rafts." Red points behind you.

Wait, she was calling you "Cap" now? Well, then again, you were calling her by a nickname too, so you let it slide for now. You spin around and see another eight or so lift boats about fifty meters away. However, there was something of about them. You squint and realize what was bothering you.

They were Russian lifeboats.

"What about them?" Red asks.

>What ABOUT them?

I suspect the PJ helos are better equipped to deal with PoWs. Besides, our casualties take priority, and its' not like Red is solar powered.
>>
>>28317835
If Subwitches is in any way canon, her shield should arguably protect her from the cold for much much longer than the average PJ can tolerate, even with a drysuit.

"You know our motto." You breathe.

"That others may live." Red nods.

"Let's go."

You both swim towards the Russian boats. This had a very large chance of going badly, but there was no way you were going to leave men to die if you could help it.

"So, uh, Cap, do you know how to speak Russian?" Red asks.

"Ummmm..."

>And that's it for tonight! Stay tuned for the next part next week! Don't forget that another VMQ side chapter this Saturday night!
