You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After a dream that brought up some extremely unpleasant memories, had breakfast with the Princess and headed down to the castle's side gate to catch Citrine and her husband as they arrived.

>Congratuations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>While dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

"HEY, CITRINE!" you call out as loud as you can, waving your arm.
"Hm?" Both Citrine and the man who she is with look around, searching for who just said that.

And then Citrine sees you trying to flag her down. Her expression becoming one of pure elation, she can't resist the urge to race towards you as fast as she can. Her companion tries to stop her one he realizes what she's about to do, but he's too late.

Because Citrine is fast.

REALLY fast.

"REIIIIIIIIIIIIIINHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD!!!" she shouts as she does a running jump towards you, nearly knocking you over from the sheer momentum of it all. "Omigosh I never would've expected to meet you here at the freaking CASTLE!!!" she says giddily as she hugs you as tightly as she possibly can.
"Heh, it's nice to see you too..." you say, smiling as you hug her back.

"Aw, this is so sweet..." Luciana says, her eyes actually starting to well up with tears.
"Yes, I suppose it is," Marianne sighs.
"I knew you'd be at the party but... this is just the best!" Citrine chirps as she finally lets go of you. "Oh, and Miss Marie is here too!"

Without warning, Citrine pulls Marianne into a hug as Luciana watches on, a smile on her face so wide that it actually looks like it hurts.

"And thank you for taking care of my little brother!" she says as she finally lets go of her.
"Y- yes..." Marianne blushes, unused to such impromptu displays of affection. "...um, you're welcome."

She then turns to Luciana.

As Luciana giggles at the implication that she's your girlfriend, you decide to speak up before Citrine says something that'll get you in trouble.

"This is Princess Luciana of Marconetti," you say.
"Oh... oh wow!" Citrine says excitedly. "I didn't think I'd get to meet any princesses until the party, but Reinhold actually brought one with him to greet me..." she giggles. "Umm, you're every bit as pretty as I'd expect a princess to be!"
"You're too kind," Luciana replies.

"...actually, you've already met a princess before..." you say guiltily.
"Hm? What do you mean?" Citrine asks.
"I kind of lied before, 'Miss Marie' is actually Princess Marianne of Granache. And I'm her bodyguard."

Once what you just said finaly registers in her head, Citrine's eyes grow wide with shock.

"Oh- oh my... I mean..." she stammers.
"Don't worry about it, it was nice meeting you back then," Marianne says.
"B- but I mean what if you thought I was rude-"
"You were fine. And if we happen to run into each other in town again, you can feel free to act the same way towards me as you did before."

As Citrine tries to keep from freaking out, the man she arrived with finally catches up to her.

"Dammit Citrine..." he says, wheezing. "...you know I'm not athletic... and I doubt that running around and jumping on people like that is very good for the baby..." he bends down, trying to regain his breath.
"Oh..." Citrine says, bopping herself on the head. "I totally forgot that I shouldn't do stuff like that right now..."

She then grabs your arm and pulls you forward.

"But I couldn't freaking believe that..." Citrine says, but is cut off.

At least do that with a character that's actually interesting. Only reason people picked Takamaru was because he was the only guy around Reinhold's age/status that wasn't a dick in the quest so far, not because of the character itself. People have built up a virtual blank slate into a walking gay joke over the course of 30 threads.

"I guess we'll wait here then?" you ask.
"Yes, I suppose we will," Marianne replies.
"Alright then, I'll try and hurry back!" Luciana says as she hurries off to find her bodyguard.

With nothing else to do, you turn to Marianne.

"So..." you begin, "What did you think of Marius?"
"He seems like a decent enough person," Marianne replies. "And from what little I saw of it, his personality seems to be a decent match with Citrine's."
"Yeah, I was thinking the same thing."
"I take it that you approve of your sister's husband then?" Marianne asks.
"That I do," you reply.
"Good, I didn't want to have to worry about you punching him during the party or something," she says with a smirk.

Greeting Citrine was apparently the first order of business today, but now you're wondering what the rest of the day will bring.

"What do you think Princess Luciana has planned for today?" you ask. "The 'secret' thing she was mentioning earlier, I mean."
"Probably something to do with you," Marianne shrugs. "Considering that she went out of her way to find out when your sister would be arriving, I don't find it all that surprising."

"I just hope that she doesn't do anything stupid..." Marianne sighs.
"What do you mean?" you ask.
"Just... remember that she jokes a lot. So if she does or says something that offends you, she probably doesn't mean it."
"Um, okay?"
"And considering what she said last night, she's probably hiding quite a lot of..." she cuts herself off. "Never mind."

Seems the eldest son, AKA the heir, actually turned out well, at least.
>>

Celestino DOES love his daughters. He's just got an attitude that girls don't get to be rulers... that to be fair, is perfectly reasonable for the setting.

The odd man out here is Aquaman.
>>

>that to be fair, is perfectly reasonable for the setting.
Not when he's best-buddies with a better country and wants to unite the two, it's not. What's he going to do, tell Marianne she isn't allowed to rule?
>>
i say we ask him about sparing later, when we have some time to chill.
and joke about Luciana enjoying "a bit too much" watching two sweaty guys hit eachother
>>
>>28355160
Yeah, considering how much different Marconetti and Granache's nobility are, and how much they seem to hate each other, I honestly think Celestino needs to be working on reforming his policies to something Granache can agree with before trying to push a political marriage. It seems he's trying to force something instead of cooperating like this.
>>
"So where are we headed to first?" you ask as the four of you walk along the same street that you were at with Sylvie last night.
"Well my best friend here is more than a bit of a bookworm, so I was thinking that we'd head to one of our many bookstores," Luciana replies. "While Granache may have a wider selection in general, there's always the chance of finding something interesting that you can't get back home."

She then turns to Marianne.

"Does that sound good?" Luciana asks.
"It figures that you'd know exactly what I want to do," Marianne replies, smiling.
"I'll have you know that I take my role as your best friend -quite- seriously!" she teases.

The two princesses then begin talking amongst themselves about random people and cakes and book authors and other things that two friends who hadn't seen each other in nearly a month would talk about. Not wanting to interrupt them, you turn to Takamaru.

"So I heard you were in a tournament recently?" you ask.
"Yes... while I made it to the finals, I lost to the boy Karel," Takamaru replies solemnly. "He's a good kid though, so I hold no grudge against him."
"Princess Luciana seemed pretty certain that you would have won in a regular fight, though..."

>[1/?]
>>
>>28355160
>maybe, but i really doubt that. surprise will probably be something
Actually he'll probably just try and annex.

Marianne is probably going to be something of a wakeup call when she boots the fuck out of his army.
>>
>>28355181
or more accurately, his son will probably try. Assuming he can't get the houses joined by marriage. Hence this ball and his attempt to get his worthless redheaded stepson married off to Marianne.

Since they're fairly solid allies, he can afford to play the long game on this.
>>
>>28355209
thanks to magic, by rights Aquaman and Celestino should remain in power and allied for a long long time.
>>
>>28355177
>[2/2]

"Oh?" Takamaru raises an eyebrow in surprise. "I suppose she has a higher opinion of my skill than I had initially believed," he says, a faint smile on his face. "My loss to Karel was due to his speed... in a purely technical sense, he is better than me as a swordsman and that is why he won."
"Huh.
"But that is in a dueling situation. Because of the ban on casting magic, I was unable to use my best techniques. Were I allowed to do so, I am quite certain that I would defeat him handily."

So he's another magic swordsman like Sir Gregory... though he doesn't seem to be on the same impossibly high level.

"But there is no sense in dwelling on past losses," Takamaru sighs.
"I kind of wish that someone I know would realize that..." you say, remembering how much Monique seems to absolutely hate you.

Before long, you make it to the bookstore and head inside. Much unlike Marchamp's small establishment back in Granache, this bookstore is in a large, well-lit building. But the size seems to be a tradeoff, as the store itself seems rather impersonal... as you entered, there was no shopkeep greeting you all and asking to assist you.

"Well, here we are..." Luciana says. "Take your time and look around, we have plenty of time!"

Unable to think of anything that you'd want to get yourself (and also, you have plenty of books that you haven't even read), you instead decide to watch on as the two Princesses search for whatever it is that they're looking for.

"There isn't much here that looks particularly interesting," Marianne sighs. "And the books that I know for a fact are, I've already read."
"Well, this is only one section..." Luciana says. "I'd forgotten how picky you are."

"Unlike you, my days are quite busy. I don't have a lot of free time to read, what with my classes..." she sighs. "So I dont have the time to waste on books that I won't like."
"You do have a point there," Luciana replies. "Well, I happen to know that there's a new book from that one author that you like..."

You and Takamaru then follow the girls as they wander around the bookstore, scouring every single bookshelf for anything of worth. Fortunately, Marianne ends up finding a couple of books that pass her high literary standards so the trip here isn't a total waste.

"Knowing you, those books are going to be finished long before you head back home..." Luciana teases.
"Perhaps," Marianne replies as she heads to the store attendant to pay for them. "It all depends on whether or not you were right about how interesting they are."

After Marianne pays for her books, the four of you head outside to your next destination.

"It's a shame that they still haven't gotten in that grimoire I asked about..." Luciana says, pouting.
"How many of those do you even have by now, anyays?" Marianne asks.
"Pshaw, the number isn't important, it's the knowledge they contain!" she says goofily.
"My concern is that it's going to be hard to keep hiding those things from your father if you get many more."

"Oh, you don't have to worry about that," Luciana replies. "The only one in the castle who could possibly find my secret library is Father himself, and he wouldn't even know where to look."
"If you say so..."

As Marianne continues to nag her friend about taking unnecessary risks, you check out the area. There's FAR more people walking around than there were last night, and it's a fair bit more crowded than the capitol city back in Granache... though that's probably due to the upcoming birthday celebration.

You continue to watch the various townsfolk as they go about their daily lives... and then you notice a girl with black hair looking around confusedly.

Sound the horn of justice!

Whatever it is, it's an NPC that has slipped out of non-space into the protagonist's line of sight.
We MUST interact!
>>
>>28355715
If it is they've got some serious guts to do it in broad daylight on a crowded street. Maybe a pickpocketing scheme at best.

>not my business
we have the day to spend with princesses. we dont need to deal with some random girl and we dont have time for it.

Watch out Reinhold, that isn't a woman, its just a skeleton wearing her skin!
>>
>>28355744
Joke's on them, Reinhold ain't got shit!
>>

Marie would not approve of this lack of manilessness and you know it.

What would aquaman do?
>>
>>28355686
This. Approach as a group.
>>
>>28355755
Aren't we all skeletons wearing skin?
>>
>>28355751
We have plenty of time. Calm down, neither Lucianna or Marie are callous enough to ignore someone in need either.
>>
>>28355761
no, we don't need to do that. Just get Marie's attention so she can stop everyone else. We'll approach seperately.

Too many people might be threatening.
>>
>>28355757
Ignore the girl and look for a dragon to slay?
>>
>>28355659
>ask her what's wrong
>>
>>28355781
please, a distressed damsel will always know the way to her nearest dragon.
>>
>>28355659
At least let the rest of the group know what you're planning before wandering off.

"Someone looks lost. Or thinks somebody else is, at least. Mind if we stop and save the day?"

Hit the limit of how long I can stay up and still make it to class tomorrow, so I'm calling it a night here.
Surprised that I actually made it through two threads tonight, but THREE TIMES THE EFFORT and all that.
Next thread is planned for tomorrow night.

And as always, thanks for playing!

Can you think of better way of handling an ambush than triggering it, slaughtering the attackers and looting their bodies for evidence and equipment?
>>
>>28355812
Goodbye beautiful
>>
>>28355767
There are some thing that you just do not talk about anon.
This is one of them.
>>
>>28355812
>Surprised that I actually made it through two threads tonight.
THREE TIMES THE EFFORT OBVIOUSLY MEANS THERE SHOULD'VE BEEN THREE THREADS.

ya done good; get some sleep
>>
>>28355812
Thanks for the run, archelon. I always love town trips in this quest. They're always pretty eventful and fun.
>>
>>28355812
Thank you arch.

Also i voted to ignore her since i wanted further walking around with princesses but if it's left for the next thread, i hope we'll not ignore her then.
>>
>>28355812
Thanks for running.
>>
>>28355812
Gnight arch!
>>
>>28355815
How about not triggering the ambush at all?
>>
>>28355845
I think he's taking the votes for this thread for the starting post of the next one. That's what he's done in the past, anyway.
>>
>>28355812
You done great, but maybe you should consider cutting amount of threads in average by half at least so you don't die of lack of sleep.
>>
>>28355858
Ignoring the bait for an ambush doesn't mean the ambushers are gone or not going to do anything, anon.
>>
>>28355862
i know. thats why i thought it would be relevant to tell my opinion.
>>
>>28355858
That's lame, and leads to no rewards.
>>
>>28355858
The best way to disarm a trap is to trip it on your own terms.
>>
>>28355873
Why not ambush the ambushers?
>>
>>28355871
i know you guys mean well but god you annoy me with all the "we are worried about you arch. dont beat yourself for us" talks. we are enjoying these so thank him for doing it instead of telling him to make threads less often or keep them shorter etc...
>>

Twice as bright half as long.

I can't be the only one to think the paintings Citrine's husband has been making are nudes of her right? Or is that not socially acceptable in their society?
>>
>>28355932
He's probably done a few of those for himself.

Barring that, he's probably used her as a model for life drawing/anatomy practice, and those are done nude.
>>
>>28355932
>Or is that not socially acceptable in their society?
Based on early reactions when we offered to sketch people, it's not only socially acceptable, but relatively common.
>>
>>28355932
Why would you hire a whore and draw her with her clothes on?
>>
>>28355932
i dont think king is buying his son some ex-whore's nudes as birthday present.
>>
>>28355812
You an cool bro OP!
>>
Archived! I got a twofer this time.
>>
so uh, guys. Remember that bear Sylvie killed a few threads back on the way the Granache? Didn't Niklaus say that the crystals aren't capable of infecting any creature larger than a guinea pig? I know its a bit late now but, i think that bear was kind of important, and this may be implying some serious risks related to that bracelet.
>>
>>28357603
Larger than a bear. Can't infect anything larger than a bear.
>>
>>28357603
no bear getting infected it really common
>>
>>28355950
because you can make her wear whatever you need. Drawing the folds in clothing is a bastard without a model.
