>Gods, sorcerers, dates, and other monsters....

>Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/CaFpKVuW

Meeting the Tager known as Widow has brought up some very ugly possibilities that you are struggling to get a handle on. You've seen what happens when Humans and Nazzadi get possessed, and you're fully aware that humanity is vulnerable to the so-called alien gods that have descended – or threaten to rise – from their hiding places. But the idea that humanity and their cousins might simply be part of a plan that extends back to the genesis of humankind on the planet, fodder specifically for these alien creatures to overwrite into various forms for their own purposes....it doesn't sit well with you.

Especially considering your mother was a proponent of a scientific version of the theory.

Talking with Doctor Kalinka eased most of your troubles on that count; scientifically humankind aren't meant to turn into dhoanoids eventually, or so he believes. But there are other little issues connected to that which gnaw at the brain like rats at wood. Cancer merely being genetic secrets gone haywire? Humanity being designed to be overlaid with various monsters from other dimensions to be remade into tools and weapons, their spirits changed and transformed? Even the Rite of Joining is something akin to that. It happens accidentally on a regular basis, though the Office of Internal Security would shit their collective armor and trenches if they knew how many people were aware of it.

So you're going to speak with the other kind of expert, one who is knowledgeable enough and powerful enough to be the focus of a rite designed to pierce through the dimensions and contact not one but eight extraplanar creatures who will then bond with – or devour – the candidates for becoming Tagers. Mordecai Gerrard is a sorcerer, one with enough skill and experience to not be insane and still be human. Certainly there are other sorcerers among the Eldritch Society, but this is a matter serious enough to you to go to the top.

Possibly higher; the Elders have to know something. On the other hand, platitudes and mysteries aren't going to soothe your nerves now.

As you are walking the halls towards the ritual rooms, where Mordecai and his fellows are undoubtedly preparing the central ritual chamber for the ultimate test of endurance, dedication, and faith, a voice calls out to you. Fanzi and Jakob, the former waving you down and the latter grinning like an idiot, are hurrying after you. Well, Fanzi is hurrying, Jakob has damnably long legs. She's smiling as well, so it's obviously not bad news.

[] Keep walking, let them catch up.

You pause, turning and waiting for them to catch up. Jakob elbows Fanzi in the side and murmurs something you don't quite catch, which makes Fanzi blush and punch him in the arm. Crossing your arms at that little display, you can't help but smile. Fanzi is far more outgoing than you are, it must have been a hell of a comment to make her blush that hard.

As they catch up to you, Fanzi smiles and takes your arm by the elbow, not pulling or grabbing, just a familiar gesture as meaningful as a handshake or a hug to her. Sometimes you wonder about her culture, what sort of environment she was raised in. “Hey, we're planning to buy out a bar for the night, and hang out in the real world for a few hours tonight.” Sounds expensive, but doable to you. “Would you like to join us? So far we have Irren, Holmes, and Viss on board. Rechert is thinking about it, and haven't got a hold of Yen just yet.” Viss being interested is a little surprising, she's usually pretty stuck up.

[Con't.]

Jakob's grin gets wider, if anything. “It's our last night, and tension is as bad as being unprepared, just like any other battle.” He does have a point. “Besides, I checked with Mordecai – as long as we don't eat too much or drink too much, it shouldn't be a problem since the ceremony is just past noon.” Sidereal noon is what he means, when the actual time of day is represented by the solar and stellar positioning of the earth. Sorcerous trivia.

Fanzi lets go of your arm, and smiles winningly. “You'll come along, right? About 20:00 hours, at the Keystone Bar?” Her cheeks are flushed and her eyes are bright. You're guessing she's going to do more than have a few drinks with Jakob and Holmes in the same room. Her call, of course, and neither of them seem to mind. Tagers needed flexible ethical codes, to an extent, though you're not entirely sure she'll do well if either of them don't survive the ritual.

[] Okay, that sounds like a good idea.

You hesitate, and Fanzi's expression falls somewhat, but Jakob looks entirely too pleased with himself. “I have to think on it.” Fanzi's expression falls a little more, and you shake your head. “I have a lot on my plate at the moment, Fanzi. But I will think hard on it. It's not a bad idea.” That seems to relive some of her tension, and she nods.

As they walk off, you watch her talking urgently to Jakob, their hips nearly touching as they walk. You certainly don't blame her – Jakob is powerfully built, rugged, handsome, and attractive. You might have gone for him if she hadn't gotten to him first. Then again, Irren is suave, sophisticated, and collected. There's a lot to be admired there. Well, there is Rechert, an absolute cutie – easily embarrassed and shy, smart and worldly as he tries to be.

Pushing aside those pleasant thoughts, you head towards the bank of elevators that will take you underground, to where the ritual rooms are located. Partly for safety's sake, and partly because of the room that needed to be customized for the Rite of Joining. Several others are taking the elevator down, two clearly maintenance, and a couple of spies for the Society. They're obviously spies because they're dressed casually and carrying no obvious weaponry, and are dead silent on the ride down. The third is an excited young sorcerer, his robes, askew, and a shimmering crystal glows faintly, hanging from a thick chain about his neck.

[Con't.]
>>
>>28355978
The elevator doors close, and unsurprisingly the two maintenance people head to B-1, where the boiler rooms are. The spies go to B-2, where the situation rooms and secondary armories are tucked away, secure and secretive, and much more importantly heavily reinforced to survive bombings. You and the sorcerer are headed towards B-4. He glances at you when you don't step off the elevator at B-2 and makes a gesture in front of his chest, the Voorish sign; he seems a little awestruck by you.

“It will be all right, you know.” Your voice in the confines of the elevator is a little shocking and the young sorcerer jumps. While you're not that much of a touchy feel-ly person you squeeze his shoulder firmly. He's older than you, but a few years at least, but he bows his head.

“Sorry, dame. I....it's the first time I've been allowed to perform in the Rite of Sacred Union.” The more formal name of the Rite of Joining; poor fellow looks as nervous as a cat whose eaten a kilogram of coffee.

“I'm not a dame yet. I'm just as....Human as you are.” You drop your hand and smile at him. “You'll do well. Mordecai wouldn't let anyone he didn't trust implicitly help him in the most sacred ritual. I trust you.” Yes, you're Nazzadi, but deep down you're all humanity. For now.

The young man's expression is slightly shell shocked, and you're not entirely certain it's because of what you're saying. He certainly can't keep his eyes above your neckline. “Th-thank you, miss. I ap-appreciate it a lot.”

[Con't.]
>>
>>28356162
“Call me Anne.”

He flushes and looks into your eyes; his are a soft hazel color, something you've always been curious about, almost envious of. All Nazzadi have the same eye color, same skin color. Only your tattoos mark you as different. “Johann, miss Anne.” As the elevator slides to a halt, the door opens and he rushes out, obviously elated and clearly too hopped up on adrenaline for his own good. You can only hope he's got better self control when it comes time for the ritual.

Following at a more languid pace, you look at the black halls painted with gold and silver cuneiform-style writings, spells of defense and warding, imbued with power but not glowing. Most magical power is actually invisible to the eyes of the uninitiated, and while you could have studied magic as intensely as Yen or Viss have, the knowledge that you would lose most, perhaps all of the capacity to use magic made anything but the basics and necessities seem superfluous. Nevertheless, you can understand the spells written here. Not the simpler spells of the current age, but complex things from an age when humans may not have even walked the earth. The Spells of the Forgotten Ones, the ancient deities that the Ta'Ge Fragments were written for, perhaps by. Deities that feared and perhaps fought the Many Masked One since before history.

The six rooms you pass are all ritual rooms as well, but for personal or smaller rituals, safeguarded but accessible to anyone who received permission from the Elders and their advisers in magic. The final room is your goal, the Great Hall. The doors are open and there is no barrier to your entry, though that will change tomorrow.

[Con't.]
>>
>>28356181
The room is huge, mystic circles and patterns carved into the floor an inlaid with metals and glass. Crystals are imbedded in the walls, surrounded by spells of guard and ward and summoning, each one an invocation to ancient beings long since forgotten by mortals and immortals alike. Eight circles on the edges, with smaller circles between them, and eight circles between those and the central circle; the middle circle has no extra places – the only things that will be in that ring are symbionts, who would consume anything else in that ring with them. In the center, the sorcerer leading the ritual, who already stands there as his fellow sorcerers clean, bespell, and energize the spells and crystals in the room.

Mordecai is dressed casually, for him – vest, dress shirt, perfectly pressed slacks. A monocle rests before his left eye, correcting the astigmatism that he has not seen fit to have corrected medically, and a pocket watch chain links the sides of his vest together. Above his left shoulder hovers a gleaming metal and wood orb, supposedly a legal defense orb, but it is rumored that it is far more than a simple protective device. Bald, sporting a very neatly groomed mustache, he looks towards you as you approach, noting your cautious efforts to not step on runes, lines, or symbols. His dark skin is eerie in the weird light of the crystals and illuminated glass on the floor.

“Anne. A pleasure, I'm sure. Have you come to help with the spell-making?” His deep voice sends a thrill up your spine, because from what you understand, it does that to any woman he speaks to. You don't know if it's magic or his voice is just that hot.

“I learned some of the basics. I may not be able to use magic after the Rite, but I can help for now.” Mordecai smiles, pleased by your willingness to help and your willingness to further studies many Tagers see as near useless to practice. “But I had a question, if you have some time.” He glances around, the six other sorcerers and sorceresses working on cleaning and enchanting seeming to have no issues at the moment. He nods, solemnly, his eyes curious as his expression is not. “It was....suggested to me that Humans – and Nazzadi – are sort of....a blank slate, a template that spiritual forces could be applied to to make them into other things. That the reason we're being assaulted from so many different sides is that we were made to be used by the aliens or gods or what-have-you as servitors and changed into tools.”

Mordecai looks at you curiously, the orb sliding over his head to rest slightly above and to the side of his other shoulder. “That is something I have heard discussed before, but not among the Holy Warriors usually. May I ask where you got the idea from?” You explain what Widower said to you, and how you spoke with Doctor Kalinka, as well as suggesting your mother may have been following that theory herself.

[Con't.]
>>
>>28356432
“Widower.” His tone of voice is surprisingly unhappy, considering the high regard the Society places upon it's leaders and holy warriors. The sorcerer takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. “I understand your concern, Anne, but this idea is something that has been going around in philosophical and religious circles since long before you were born. Since Humans first discovered arcanotech, as a matter of fact. You yourself know tere are ancient gods and powers beyond the pale, beyond Human and Nazzadi understanding. The Mi-Go fear them too, and I doubt the Mi-Go are the only alien species to have visited earth.”

Raising his hands to the Grand Ritual Room, he continues. “Here, during the ancient Rite of Sacred Union, created to honor the Forgotten Ones by calling down higher beings to join with a holy warrior, we will honor gods that are said to no longer exist. And you will be transformed into a being more than Human or Nazzadi. But you will, at your heart, be Nazzadi, be Human. Dhoanoids are truly monsters. There is no humanity in them. Those who call upon He Who Is Not To Be Named, or The Thousand Faced One have their humanity stripped from them, becomes less than Human, less than Nazzadi.” Placing his hands on your shoulders, he looks you into your crimson eyes, his expression concerned, understanding.

If we help, we'll probably be busy for a while and miss the bar meet. Let's just get our questions answered.

[X] Sorry, I can't; but I do need to ask ask you something.
>>
>>28356439
“In the long run it doesn't matter if Humans and Nazzadi are a blank slate, their bodies and flesh designed to be overwritten by ancient powers and being from other dimensions. We're a young race, compared to the ones we are fighting. We have had gods in out past, and while in the past those gods may not have answered our calls....” The sorcerer looks at you seriously. “The Engel Project has managed to use human biology to produce monsters that can fight the alien mecha better than technology alone. There might be rituals and spells in the very science that they use to do it, associated with gods born or made on earth. The religion that worshiped the Christ is where they get the name Engel from, after all, just as we took the name of our holy warriors from the Ta'Ge fragments.”

That thought hadn't occurred to you. Then again this whole line of questioning hadn't either.

“I think that ALL races start off with this....vulnerability, this ability to become host to the beings from Beyond. Those that have gods who can hear them are more protected than others, but others are still vulnerable. The Mi-Go are used to dealing with these things, but we don't know that they cannot be affected by He Who Must Not Be Named or the Hoary One. There might be other races just as vulnerable as we are, and still others protected by their own gods, like the Deep Ones are.” With a sigh, he steps back. “In the end, I think what matters is whether we chose to take up arms under their auspices or force others to become victims of the powers that are from Beyond. Free will, in the hands of a young race that no gods have laid claim to is what Humans and Nazzadi have. And we are asking you to ensure that it remains that way.”

Mordecai nods, and steps backm sensing a certain amount of aloofness or conviction that you didn't walk in with. . “I'm glad you came to me with this. The Elders are Tagers as well, and their take on such matters is colored by the Society's war on Chrysalis and the Cult. They want you to go into this with the dedication and strength of a warrior, or to step back and wait. Widower....has some strange ideas, but she's been on the front lines for a long time, and losing so many of her Packmates has probably taken a heavy toll. And she has been exposed to more horrors than we can imagine between the two of us.” For a moment he looks undecided, unsure of himself – something a sorcerer should never be, in your opinion.

Shaking his head he smiles at you, that momentary doubt gone. “I trust you'll be here for the ceremony tomorrow. In fact, I look forward to it, as well as your friends. You have all studied and trained hard, and I want you to be able to enjoy not just the fruits of your labors, but the opportunity to take back part of the world from enemies that the N.E.G and O.I.S . may never hear about.” You're certain that's not what he was going to say. “I know you offered to assist, but tonight, go with your friends, and indulge a little. You take your leave after thanking him for his candor. A final glance once more around the huge ritual room that will seal your fate as either warrior for the cause or food for some strange thing beyond the pale, and then the long walk through dark halls to where the elevators await.

Despite the questions and turmoil you've been through, you have something like answers, but more than anything, you're absolutely certain that this is the right thing to do. Regardless of Widower's theory, your mother's scientific madness, and your previous doubts, the only thing that really matters is breaking the back of the Chrysalis Corporation and the Children of Chaos who give it power. The spell that makes your room into a safe place for meditation and centering aside, you've never practiced much of other magic or sought arcane secrets, save the few times you've used Eldritch Sight. They take too long and are time intensive, and there's the risk of something Other invading your mind. After today's trouble, you're glad you never delved deeper.

Still, you have a party to go to, if you want that. You know Fanzi will be pleased to see you there, even if she bails out before it gets too late, dragging one of the guys with her. You could always find someone else to spend time with – you're no vestal virgin, but it's been a long time, largely because you're a fiend for study. Of course, you could find Irren or Rechert. If Fanzi hasn't dragged them off too.

No. None of those.

You really need to just collect your wits and prepare yourself for the most difficult thing you will ever do in your life. You get one shot at this, and failure is death.

Really horrible, painful, messy death.

Fanzi slips in in the middle of the night, waking you as you sleep. Your dreams, always troubled, were less unpleasant than usual and you're not soaked in a cold sweat. Fanzi, on the other hand, is soaked; her hair is wet and she smells lightly of her scented soap. You can see she's wearing only a towel in the darkness even the dim glow of the nightlight enough to make out perfect details to your Nazzadi eyes, and you watch as she settles on the bed. She seems tired, but her eyes are wide and alert, and she's shaking just a bit.

Not just from exertion. She almost seems like she's having second thoughts. Which is perfectly understandable, you suppose. People have pulled out just before the ritual before, and no one blames them. You certainly wouldn't – you've studied enough magic to understand what is about to happen much better than Fanzi can.

“Are you okay?” She starts, surprised by your voice, and as you sit up, she struggles to compose herself. She's as nervous as Johann was. “You're not okay, then. What's....bothering you?” Even you know that 'what's eating you' would be in poor taste, joking or not.

“It's just tomorrow, you know? It's everything we've worked for, and everything we need, everything everyone needs. It's heavy, having that over your head.” You can see from her expression that it's not herself she's thinking of. Fanzi actually does care about both of the men she's been having sex with regularly – Jakob is one, but you're not sure who the other one is. The possibility that they might die is weighing on her a lot harder than you'd suspected. She's always been worried about others.

“Did you have fun tonight?” Take her mind off of the possibility of them dying; that will help some, you hope.

She smiles, actually smiles. “Yeah. Yeah I did. So did Jakob and Irren.” That's a little surprising – you would have thought Holmes would be the other one. “Viss missed you though.” Another surprise – you thought she'd be more interested in Rechert or Yen, the other two intellectuals. Even if Rechert was clueless. But her expression falls. “I'm scared, Anne. I don't want to lose any of you.”

And with the moment of truth coming, it only made sense that the most sensitive of you would be scared of losing friends. Family.

You slide out of bed and sit next to Fanzi, and then, to her surprise, hug her. Not even Rechert would do that, the twerp.” She snorts laughter, covering her mouth as tears start to fall on your shoulder. CoNViction: Every time you chose to follow through on a course of action or demonstrated a willingness to make a sacrifice, you increased your conviction. Sometimes it went up because you chose to do things outside your best interest.

PHooD. As in , "you are." Every moment of indecision or doubt, self doubt or fear, whenever you expressed a measure of uncertainty about your situation or others, fear when up. Predators enjoy fear. The symbiont seeing you as food was certain death; no rolls could have saved you.

TOLerance: Your concern and compassion for others, as flted through the self-involvement required of a Tager-in-training. The stronger your concern for others, close to you or not, the more likely a stronger symbiont would come to investigate you, in order to ensure their safety and protection. Congratulations, I didn't think you'd manage - it was close.

PaRaNoia: Not self doubt, but fear of the unknown, the turmoil caused by others, and the suspicions that things were not as safe or as sure as you thought they were increased this. It is also deadly, but not the sure-fire death Phood represented. It can still be your downfall.

That's pretty cool. PHooD. Ha. Good thing we got less than half of each of those, then.

There were a few times where I was concerned.

Not that you are entirely out of danger yet, but you have a strong chance.

Okay, so we're going to attract a strong symbiont.
Can we actually communicate with it, or is utterly alien to us?
>>
>>28357301
According to your training, you will be able to communicate with it in a VERY rudimentary fashion, mostly empathic. What kind you will not be able to determine, though attitude and self image has a lot to do with it (the first part of the adventure determined that for you, save that now it will be exceptional as opposed to a standard one; there are only three).

As for what you will be communicating to it, or what it will communicate to you....that must wait, I'm afraid.

As long as we don't get the dice gods involved and we avoid any SAVE OR DIE decisions we should be alright. /tg/ has bad history with the above.

Sacrifice typo demons to the Dice Gods. It works.
