You are Christopher Phillips, previously just another teenage nerd living in a small English town, and a lot of things have changed in your life since you died.

Of course, you’re not the only person who’s died recently.

You’re looking across the school grounds, on a warm Thursday morning. Less than two days now until you’re released to the outside world, or at least to independent revision before your GCSEs. The events of the last month or so haven’t left you much time to think about exams, though. Even now, you’re not looking for a study partner, or meeting a friend to plan what to do with your summer holiday. You’re watching out for a dead woman walking.

There, at the edge of the grass. Anne - Annabelle Lowe - is standing quietly, watching some kids playing on the basketball court. You watch her for a moment, just to be sure. The young woman who introduced herself on Monday as Jill’s new social worker, and the woman the local news reports as ‘missing, presumed dead’ since Sunday - the one Cassandra confirmed to you that she killed and drained - are definitely the same person.

You’re not quite sure what you’ll do with this new knowledge just yet. But it’s comforting to have it. Knowledge, after all, is power.

Hmm. You take another look around, locating your other sources of power. Avril and Jill have gone inside already, looking something up in the library. Isabella is gathering her followers around her, picking up the latest gossip and distributing smiles and favours with an ease that most politicians would envy. Miranda will presumably be in her office, preparing for your History lesson later on. And Esther, the remaining useful member of Ajani’s group of monster hunters, is sitting on the steps up to the main building, reading a book and combing Louie’s hair.

You’ve got maybe ten or fifteen minutes before school starts for the day. What do you want to do?

[]Speak to Anne. She’s the new puzzle here. Find out what she knows.
[]Check in with Isabella, get more information, and see if she’s had any luck tracking down Cassandra.
[]Talk to Esther. Find out how Gloria and Ajani are recovering, and what their next plans are.
[]Go inside and find Avril and Jill. You don’t remember them mentioning what they were going to look up, but it might be interesting.

Just to clarify, Anne was reported dead by the paper and Cassandra confirmed she drained her female victim. Yet she's standing here in front of us? Gotta have been turned then.

We should definitely talk to Esther later, when another opportunity presents itself. As well as having news on Ajani and Gloria, she might know a thing or two about ghosts.

If you want to know more about Anne, best to go straight to the source, right? You walk over and wave casually, and she smiles when she sees you.

"Hi. Chris, right?"

"Yeah. Hi, Annabelle. How come you're here looking for Jill again? Don't you have any other cases?"

"You'd think so, but I guess they're giving me an easy workload or something. Or... maybe I said something to piss them off. No-one's said two words to me all week. Maybe I'm meant to be working independently... oh, listen to me babble. The important part is that all my focus is on helping your friend and her family, right?"

"Uh, right. Can we sit and talk for a bit?"

Anne beams. "I'd love to. That's one of the reasons I wanted to go into social work to begin with - I like to listen to people's problems and help them out." She settles down, sitting cross-legged on the grass, and you sit beside her. "So what did you want to tell me about?"

"I didn't quite mean that sort of talk, actually. I figured if you're going to be working with Jill so much I should find out more about you, right? Do you mind telling me about yourself? What have you been up to lately?"

Anne laughs nervously. "Oh, nothing much, really. Had a lot of time to myself. You know, just... sitting around, on my own. Having some me time. It's good for you, right?"

"What about your boyfriend? Your friends?"

Anne looks down at the ground. "No-one's been calling lately, or talking to me. I haven't seen my boyfriend since Monday morning. He hasn't called either. It must have been that party. What the hell happened?"

"You... don't remember anything at all about Sunday night?"

"It's all kind of a blur. There was this pretty girl, we were dancing and talking, and drinking a fair bit, and we went outside for some fresh air and... then everything is just a blank."

Anne pauses, looking curiously at you. "Why do you ask, anyway? Do you know something I don't?"
>>
>>28381760
((Sorry for the delay, everyone. On a somewhat related note, I really hate the 4chan spam filter. And apparently the feeling is mutual.))
>>
>>28381760
"Oh, I'd read in the news that apparently that party was bad news. So, no one's called you, huh? Have you called in to work? There was some problems with Jill's Mom, and we're wondering if there's a way to get her to live with her aunt instead."

Ease Anne gently into realizing she's dead.
Does she even look solid? Does she cast a shadow?
>>
>>28381760
Feign ignorant.

"Did you know that the newspaper reported you dead for some reason? That's pretty crazy right? Maybe your people believe your phone was stolen or something."

She will go searching, find out she is dead, come to terms with the initial shock, and then seek us out herself after she realizes that we saw her."
>>
>>28381854
Plus this will buy us some time to get private with Isabella, and then track down Cassy after we see if we are drift compatible.
>>
>>28381760
OH SHIT GHOST
>>
>>28381760
"All sorts of things. I think I might know the girl you danced with, actually. A prickly acquaintance to have, but that's neither here nor there. Have you tried calling in to work? I can't believe your bosses would leave a rookie just swinging in the wind. Anyway, we'd like to move forward with this whole process- why don't we meet with you later today?"

We get Jill and Avril and Isabella in a room with her and have, essentially, an undead coming out party. "You're dead! I'm dead! Isabella is also dead! High five!"

We should also find out if this sort of thing has happened before when Cassandra feeds, and what she did with the body, in case Anne wants some extra proof beyond the whole highlander-stab-yourself thing.
>>
>>28381925
She might be a another vampire (I don't think we know the vamp rules).

Quick push her into the sunlight!
>>
>>28382075
Ugh. Don't be daft. Or a douchebag.
Do you want another in-character speech of Chris being criticized for being stupid?
>>
>>28382075
((She's currently sitting in the sunlight already.

Also, Cassandra walks around in the sunlight all the time. You have no idea how. Presumably magic of some sort. Or really, really strong sunblock, maybe. Who knows?))

"You're dead, sis."
>>
Guys, guys, we're all jumping to conclusions here. This is probably all just an absurd serious of wacky coincidences leading to a hilarious misunderstanding about Anna's current health status, that we'll all laugh about soon.
>>
>>28382186
"Uh, no, nothing. Just that I read in the news that it was a really rough party. Some people died, even. And I think I know the girl you danced with, actually. Interesting girl, but that's not important right now. Did you call in to work at all? They didn't give you any guidance at all?"

Anne shrugs. "I went in once to get some paperwork and everyone just blanked me. I, uh... I'm not very good at confrontation. And I can still do my case work. I'll talk to Jill again at lunch, and maybe go round to talk to her mother and get her to fill out the questionnaire this time..."

"Wait, you haven't heard? Uh, I don't think that's going to be happening... you should talk to Jill's aunt, okay? Miranda White, she works in the History department. Actually..." You pause, running a few things over in your head. "How about you come and meet Jill later today and we'll have a chat about things, okay? I'll see if I can get Miranda to come to that instead."

((Okay, so that half is fine. Second half may be delayed somewhat while I grapple with the spam filter. Again.))

Anne raises an eyebrow, but nods slowly. "Okay, sure. I would ask what I'm supposed to have heard, but I'm guessing you'll tell me at this meeting later, right?"

You nod, giving Anne a quiet glance over. She's casting a shadow, and she doesn't look massively pale or like she's about to burst into flames, but... now that you're looking, not just at her, but at everyone else around her as well... no-one is looking at Anne. A guy walking past casually shifts to one side so as not to walk through her, but he doesn't seem to consciously notice her. And there's a very subtle shimmer in the air all around her, that looks familiar somehow but which you can't immediately place. It's around her shadow, too, which is definitely strange.

"Uh, Chris? I was saying, you'll tell me at that meeting, right?"

"Right, sorry. Got distracted for a second. Yes, I'll tell you at the meeting."

"Okay. You should probably get to class, then. If you do want to talk to me about anything, any problems you're having at school or at home, you've got my number. Just give me a call and I'll be happy to talk, any time." She smiles and waves as you head off to your first class of the day.

German buzzes by in a breeze of revision tips and handy coloured charts, and you head to History, your mind still buzzing with what to tell Anne about her new condition, and about what's happened with Jill. You should talk to someone about it first, too.

[]Chat to Jill herself. It's her case, after all, her family.
[]Take Miranda aside for some 'revision help' and get her side of things. Have you even asked her about this plan of Jill living with her yet?
[]You've got one more person you can grab for advice. Assuming the Man in White actually counts as a 'person'. What's his take?

Corral Jill and go talk to Miranda together before our meeting with Anne. After we're done talking about Jill's family we can bring in Avril and Isabelle for our dead person party.

Did we notice Anne actually interact with anything physical? I suppose since a person moved to avoid her, she is manifest, but I want to be sure.
>>
>>28387498
(( When you first met Anne, she shook Avril's hand, and then a moment later shook your and Jill's hands. She seemed solid enough then. You can't actually recall her physically interacting with anyone or anything else, though. ))
