Post short ideas for creepy incidents/ happenings

Examples :

A hiker finds the skeletal remains of a body. The skeleton is intact except for a shattered skull. Forensic examination of the remains shows that the deadly blow came from inside the skull.

The room you are in has a large picture on the wall of the local skyline lit up at night. As you turn to leave the room, out of the corner of your eye, you see a window in one of the buildings go dark.

On certain nights, the mortician in the morgue locks his office door and spends the night praying. He shivers when the scraping noises pass by his door. He never looks for the bodies that disappear.

You are walking somewhere familiar; maybe up your own driveway. You glance across your yard and you see someone standing inside a window watching you. There is no house connected to the window. When you realize this and look back the window is there just long enough for the person inside to pull the blinds shut.

Walking on a crisp autumn morning, you happen to be looking at a tree across the street when you hear a brittle snap. In less than a minute’s time, every single bright yellow leaf from the maple falls to the ground, all at once.

You keep seeing a small child out of the corner of your eye, staring in abject terror at the space just behind you.

You're walking home at night, and happen across a half dozen cats sitting in a circle. They turn to stare at you until you've walked past them. (Happened to me IRL..)

You're going about your business, when a song you've never heard comes up on your music player. The words are foreign, discordant and catchy, and it's difficult not to sing along. When you check for the name of the song you realize the player ran out of batteries several minutes ago.

Sure thing.

You walk into a room, and see the furniture has just settled back into it's proper places.

Each night as you lay down in your bed, a streetlight outside your window goes dark.

You've lived inland your entire life, but the one time you visited the ocean it smelled.... Like you were finally home. You'll be back.

You're casually checking your appearance in the mirror. Your reflection looks at something behind you in horror.

Snow gently falls covering the world in a thin blanket of glistening white. Something crawls beneath the snow, something much larger than the snow's depth should allow.

As you drive home from work, a man wearing a red hood stands on every street corner and watches your car drive by. Is it the same man at every corner?

You are browsing /tg/ and are suddenly aware that there is something with pale skin and long limbs standing right behind you, but you know that if you turn to look it will eat your skin.

you and your wife for some years live alone in an older style apartment. the doctors have suggested you have her placed in professional care, but your heart can't bring you to. Sure her manic episodes can be scary, but you love her. it would break your heart to have her committed..
one day, your anniversary in fact, your wife comes in, realising the date and in a manic excitement rushes to make us a special dinner, you sit for a moment, until you see the smoke.
as you rush to the kitchen, you see her piling papers, old mail, and such on to the stoves gas burners, her eyes wild as she looks at you, fire already crawling up the wall.."Its our anniversary honey, I have to do something special so I don't let you down.." she says. your heart breaks and panic sets in, as you try in vain to pull the debris off the stove.
As your doing that, your brother and father walk into the apartment, into the kitchen. terrified your father asks what your doing.."she isnt well, shes trying to burn us alive.." you tell him in tears.
Your brother pulls you away from the stove, your arms burned.. your father distraught, starts to call 911, knowing it was never okay to let you live on your own..

You're getting quite drawn into the book you've been reading for quite some time now. It's getting late, you know you should stop and get some sleep already. You can't bring yourself to stop however; it's just too damn good. The next day, you show it to your friends to explain your sleepiness/tardiness.
"Dude, is this some kind of joke or something? I can't read a word of this..."
Now that he mentions it, it IS in fact just a tangle of lines, angles, and alien symbols that seem just barely organized. Regardless of this fact, you can still read it perfectly. It is still just as compelling to you as it was before.

You are visiting your parent's graves. As you begin to re-trace your steps through the graveyard back to your car, you begin to hear spastic thumping beneath your feet.

You awake, but are unable to move your body (sleep paralysis). You see movement out of the corner of your eye; it's your brother, looking just like he did back when you used to share a room as kids...except that his eyes are facing in two different directions. He walks over to the side of your bed, and you can see the glint of a knife in his hand. As he begins to carve you up, you realize that you are not dreaming at all.

Late at night, you are roused from sleep by a strange sound. There is a strange voice you do not recognize coming from the closet, too tinny to be a human. Though the lack of sleep coupled with momentary confusion has frightened you, you decide not to let your fears get the better of you. You open the closet, and realize the sound is coming from a high shelf. You pull down a terribly aged shoe box, and fish out a Porky the Pig toy you haven't seen in years. You're too tired to pay attention to what it's saying...or to the fact that the batteries should have died long ago. As you shake the batteries out of it, you finally start paying attention...just in time to hear it speak:
"I seriously hope you didn't just do that."

You go about your day, start finding teeth in random places when you are alone. They seem to disappear when you try to show people.
When you are not paying attention to the people around you and they aren't talking directly to you, you can't hear them talking, only a low hum of static.
While washing, you discover you are pulling out body hair in small handfuls, but only when water is touching your skin. It doesn't grow back.

Both your hands are full, and you keep trying to reach for things with your other arm. You're not sure why it surprises you that you only have the two.

After one too many sleepless nights kept awake by the banging and scraping in the apartment over yours, you go to file a noise complaint with the manager. He stares blankly and points out you live on the top floor.

Idly looking at a clock or watch, you see it tick backwards by a minute.

You've always been annoyed by the collection of grotesque statues and gargoyles your neighbor keeps in their yard, and slightly curious why they bother rearranging them every afternoon when you're at work. (spoilers, no one actually lives there)

Your cat story reminds me of something similar that happened a year or so ago. I was driving home from work, and as I pulled into my driveway I noticed that the hill opposite my house was absolutely covered by a flock of crows - and entire murder. As I left my car, they all turned their heads and watched me as I back slowly towards the door to my home. The moment I got inside of the house, they all flew away.

Final round of an epic cat chess tournament?

Cat Chess: “This needs, as the playing area, something the size of a small village. Up to a dozen cats can take part. Each cat selects a vantage point—a roof, the coal house wall, a strategic corner or, in quiet villages, the middle of the road—and sits there. You think it’s just found a nice spot to sun itself until you realise that each cat can see at least two other cats. Moves are made in a sort of high-speed slink with the belly almost touching the ground. The actual rules are a little unclear to humans, but it would seem that the object of the game is to see every other cat while remaining unseen yourself. This is just speculation, however, and it may well be that the real game is going on at some mystically higher level unobtainable by normal human minds, as in cricket.”

These two made me think of something. An other dimensional being takes close to death people into it's dimension to absorb them into a formless body it wants to use to cross over here and manifests itself mentally on people aware of such things with body horror. The only thing you can see of it is a blob like flesh ball that can press itself through small spaces.

>from behind it 3 more lights appear, they look kind of like flash lights maybe
>more lights end up appearing, now on multiple different levels, all of them kind of bobbing and moving closer and closer to the window it would seem
>the light form changes so now they look like candles
>now they are moving across and in all sorts of different directions.
>goes on for like 10 minutes before it stops and all the lights go out one by one.

No fucking clue what it was, but I don't think I really want to.

Has someone called for /x/?

I'm not quite here, since I've forgotten a lot. But I'll do my best, /tg/.

It's time to bring some horror into your tabletop games. Remember, you can't start big. If you immediately go full-all tentacles, then it's not going to be scary. You have to set the mood first, and then start a long. gradual slide to insanity. The attached image can basically be summed up as thus:
(1)Have 3 main stages:
-Small 'wrongs'
-big 'wrongs'
-horror setpieces
(2) You cannot make someone afraid; they have to be willing.
(3) Deviate from the rules as the game proceeds in its insanity slide--note that this doesn't NECESSARILY mean game mechanics; there are unspoken rules that need to be broken. Unspoken rules that we use to make sense of the world around us. Take that away. Nothing is as it seems.
(4) Induce paranoia
(5) Don't use jump scares, it doesn't translate well to ttrpgs and it's the cheapest form of horror. Make your players experience constant doubt and anxiety, not make them yip like a small dog.
(6) The more the players see of the wrongness about them, the more they adapt to it. Let them only catch glimpses of the truly mind-numbing stuff

There are some other good points, but those are the most important ones if you feel the attached file is tl;dr.

However, the problem with the attached file is that it doesn't make examples. What IS a small wrong, and how do you quantify it? How do you know when to use it? A small wrong is a PASSIVE or OBSERVED wrong. Many of the phenomena in this thread are small wrongs. An unusual object, or configuration, that is observed in passing. For example, the circle of cats is a good example of a small wrong. Enough to set the teeth on edge but not enough to take action; that would be unreasonable. Passing by a friendly gravedigger, and then later that day hearing a story about men being buried alive. Very minor, but enough to set the mood. To prepare for what's coming.

A big wrong is an ACTIVE wrong. It's something that moves, or happens to you, or is clearly threatening; >>28426798 >>28427857 >>28426916 are good examples of big wrongs. Make sure you set the mood with smaller stuff before you use these. You want the players to be certain there is a wrongness to the world around them before you spring active wrongs on them.

And the horror setpieces? Because they can be widely different based on the game, I won't care to elaborate on the specifics here. However, you should only have 1 or 2, at most 3 of the setpieces in the game, and at the end you should have one of the setpieces kill your players in a horrible, irrevocable fashion. If you DO have more than one setpiece, then there's no return--the players ought to be quivering in fear in places where they are no longer safe, or always on the run, always running. Have horrors hunt them down.

Of course, you can't just start a horror game with a theme and expect it to fly. You have to customize it to your players, and you do this with small wrongs. Some people are scared of being bound. Some people are scared of the dark. Some people are scared of long, gangly limbs, or squick at teeth, or shudder at spirits. Some will feel thir resolve weaken when someone slithers towards them in the dark of the night, others will strike themselves down in terror when they look their loved ones in the eyes and realize that something ELSE could be inside them, and you would never be able to tell. So, start with small wrongs, and assess what these people are afraid of. Find out the dark secrets they hide.

>>28433459
Another important strategy is recurring themes/repetition. Have symbols that appear again and again, actions that bring the players to the same room, make it so that the only logical action is to take themselves to where they began, and then start it over again. Inescapable cycles are excellent for you, for it gives the players a sense of futility that works wonderfully with horror. Sometimes simple symbols work fine too--they don't even need to be inherently scary; like Young Man Citadel, a stylized image of a healthy man with no head, but a collection of bricks in its place, or scrawls in ink or chalk or blood portraying the works "the Waking Mountain" over and over again.

So when the darkness closes in around them for the last time, it will be a tailored darkness, a suit of despair and agony to fit your party to the t. Each of them will be touched by the game in a deeper way than a preset, panned game would. And if you've done your job, they won't forget.
>>
A long time back there was a thread about using music to enhance your game.

Some one posted how he was DMing a game, and a party had entered a sort of pocket dimension that they would use for camp/store items. Every time they would be there he'd play this song that was kind of ambient like, but it also included a roar in it too for some reason.

He later told them the roar was getting closer each time they were in there.

was pretty creepy, but I'm telling it like shit

You're camping with friends, in the middle of the night you hear strange sounds coming from outside the tent. Taking a look, you see the still silhouette of a person, it does not respond to questions - if approached, attacked or a light shone upon it; it will collapse to the ground. It is a body that has clearly been dead for several days, its eyes having been gouged out.

I realize I'm a few hours late here, but I shall tell what of the story I recall.

I was running a homebrew setting in pathfinder, had been going 2+ years. Basic idea was that the world was the inside of an egg that had hatched long ago, but whatever had been there left behind some Things sleeping in the dark parts of the world.
The paladin showed up to replace someone that had been eaten by a grue recently, and as I mentioned before decided amnesia was easier than backstory. I agreed that I'd make up something for him and gradually reveal it if he stuck around, so I got to work on that.
Skip to a few sessions later, the party is traveling along the seashore and bed down for the night. This whole time the paladin has been feeling something seems familiar in a way they can't place, but now that he's trying to sleep it's almost as though something is calling out to him, from the sea. After a few sleepless nights on his part the party hits town to finish their mission.
They notice something is off about this place. The people seem more like they are acting out their business than simply getting it done, and the paladin is treated with near reverential respect while the rest of the party is largely ignored. In spite of everything here being kind of fishy, they finish their business and are convinced to spend the night.
They are naturally attacked in their sleep, and after a long, incredibly bloody escape the party decides enough is enough and burns the town to the ground, kills everyone that tries to leave, and throws the bodies back onto the fire. The paladin refused to go within sight of any large body of water for any reason after that, though due to a combination of accidents and shenanigans the party ended the world shortly after this incident so that's the end of the story.

>One particularly hot summer's day, you notice no one around you is casting a shadow. Neither are you.

...oh, wait, that one creepy guy has a perfectly ordinary shadow. He hasn't noticed you looking at him. He leans close to another person and whispers something. They look confused, then he points down at where their shadow should be. The person begins to cry. The creepy guy reassures them, patting them on the shoulder, and seems to offer help. The person accepts, nodding enthusiastically with an expression of transcendent relief, and formally shakes the creepy guy's hand.

The person walks away, seeming to have forgotten the creepy guy, but now the person has a shadow. The new shadow looks like the creepy guy, not like the person who's casting it.

You mention that the dubstep music at the nightclub your party is in has slowed down and become almost guttural.

Then casually mention offhand a little bit later once they leave that the DJ had stopped playing his set about 15 minutes prior to them arriving.

>You spot an old man casually strolling by you on your afternoon walk, a solemn look lines the cracked and faded features face and a rosary hangs tightly in his wrinkled hands. Hebis lookin at the rosary the whole time as he seems to be deeply in prayer. As he goes by, though you almost swear you catch your name being uttered as he turns the corner.

>As you walk along the desert highway late in the evening, you notice a coyote staring at you some distance away. Before youncan react You see it trot away through some of the sparse desert vegetation. As the sun dips behind the grand plateaus, cliffs and mountains you hear a dry, harsh laugh, slowly turn into a howl.

You are out walking through the woods with your loyal hound, as you have done so often. It is a lovely morning of early fall with just tatters of mist still clinging lazily in the low clefts between hills. Fido is snuffling about underneath a tree, probably planning to do some business there when you hear music wafting through the woods from up ahead. It sounds plaintive, forlorn, somehow. You catch snatches of the lyrics, something about "come to feast" and "taste the flesh" as the electric guitar cries soulfully on.

Goddamn kids and their stupid metal videos ruining the perfectly nice atmosphere. You amble up the ridge to give them a piece of your mind, planning to later call the queer doctor who owns the property and tell him that you don't care how a good a mechanic his friend is, the folks 'round here like their peace and quiet!

What you see next is a shock to your very sensibilities: three half-naked people and you can't even tell their sex because they're "wearing" a bizarre assemblage of negligees, garters, clown make-up and heels.

More curious yet is that they are all drenched and the nearest open body of water would be the doctor's luxury indoor swimming pool.

Speaking of which, where is the mansion?

>>The players befriend a shy, agoraphobic girl who says she can help them. She claims to be in love with an Angel, but being in an asylum it’s likely that she is just insane, that it is just a split personality or method of soothing her trauma. She escapes from the asylum after something particularly upsets her (a new uncaring councilor, the players’ doubts, etc). The players eventually find her in an abandoned, run-down house. A shadowy, tentacled being is holding and caressing her tenderly as she cries tears of relief.

That is actually really sweet/ heartwarming.

This made me stop, not because it is scary, but because it ISN'T scary.

And it isn't scary because I'm used to it, it happens to me about once a month.

Which is what scares me, something so mundane in my life that I've decided to stop focusing on it - turns up in a "creepy incidents thread". That is scary.
>>
>>28455849
Contrary to what Lovecraft might think, humans are quite good at dealing with the strange and unnatural.

That said, I don't find the idea of that one too scary. Maybe if it were winding straight backwards, but a single minute is just common malfunction territory.

It's not so much scary, or true horror per say, but more of a mood setting device. It's not something you would normally expect, especially in this digital age, and seeing it would unnerve the common viewer. All the clocks at my school would stop at exactly 1:59 each day to account for any form of lag or the clock running slow. It's weird, but reasonable.

Oh no, quite the opposite. But what I intended to be a dark and gritty game involving the players fighting the supernatural forces of the Third Reich across occupied Europe turned into them causing chaos wherever they went.

>Causing a near-party wipe and blowing up a POW camp on a stealth mission
>Punching innocent manservants in the face

- You are listening to you favorite song on your music player. You hear, barely, in the background of the song a terrible shriek or scream. When you rewind the song or listen to it again the scream isn't audible anymore.

- You are sleeping, in your dreams you can't stop thinking. You hear a female voice say "sush now, go to sleep.". You realize you where awake the entire time and there's nobody there.

- You wake up in the middle of the night and walk around the house. As you walk pass a window you hear someone whisper "over here". There's nobody outside.

- Once every few years the police dispatch radios one of their newest officers and tells them to go check out a disturbance at a dilapidated, ancient house located in a remote, deserted, part of town. The officer simply vanishes and the next morning other officers are dispatched to collect his car. The house itself looks renewed.

- You have a painting in your room. It depicts a peasant girl walking in a field of flowers. She is very far away. Everyday you notice she appears closer to you, while flowers slowly appear chance colors and eventually die. Everyday you make up more details in her face and every day she appears to age more and more and her features grow more disturbing.

- You are driving down a road at night and you see a old man walking by. He stares at you while your car goes past. A few miles down the road you see the same old man, still staring at you.

You're watching a movie when you notice an object in the background, something conspicuous but possibly missed by the set designer. Not unusual itself, more like a movie easter egg. The next day, you walk down the street to work, or a resturant or something and notice the object is in an advertisement on a window, once again as if the set designer had missed it. Then you begin to notice the object is showing up in more photos/movies as you look at them, but going back through they aren't there.

please don't ask me that...

okay fine.

player's keep seeing what they think are demonic eyes but it tuns into ordinary things whenever they take a second look.
>sees a demon in their rear view mirror, only to find that it was the tail lights of a passing car.
>wakes up from a disturbing dream and think they see the same demon in their bedroom out of the corner of their eye, but when they turn its just the lights from their alarm-clock and wireless router...
not much on their own, but if the players are already on edge from the quest line these subtle things could potentially put them over the edge... especially when the glowing eyes finally stop turning into mundane things when the players take a second look.

possession plots are always creepy, especially if the player's don't expect it or see it coming.

anytime they are in a place that has been abandoned for no apparent reson where no signs of struggle, or rush are present, just things appear half-finished and/or in their place like everyone just dropped everything they were doing and left... it's creepy.

fangs, claws, and stingers: predators are just inherently scary on the utmost primal level.

>Aren't posession plots a sin for GMs?
my understanding is that they are incredibly hard to pull off and require a keen sense of reading the mood and atmosphere of the party and players and excellent storytelling skills. not to mention an early exit strategy if the players are not liking where you are going, but not impossible.

You look out of your window at night, maybe because you hear a car park and you're expecting someone. In a window in a nearby tower block, you see a silhouette. It somehow looks... familiar. Thinking back, you realise that you've seen it every single time you've looked out of that window at night. Never out of any other window facing the same direction.

You check the next night, and the silhouette raises a hand.

"Mrah!"
Maybe you just imagined it. Maybe that was a fluke.
"Mrow!"
Your cat has taken up meowing at night, as he gets into his older years.
"Maaaaooooow!"
You let out something between a sigh and a grunt as his piercing yowl for the third time in a row shows he's not going to stop without your interference. You force yourself out of bed, pausing only to fumble for the switch on the bedside lamp and look miserably at the alarm clock reading 2:19 AM in front of you. So much for seven straight hours.
"MAAAAAOOOOUUuUWWWWW!" Loudest one yet. The inflections of pain are clear. It must be his kidney failure, but suffering or not, you need him to shut up, for your (and your neighbors') sake. You grab the spray bottle and stumble into the kitchen/living room of your bachelor pad.
It's your cat, perched directly on the kitchen table, facing you. You freeze. Those are definitely not cat's eyes.
"Meow."
